ZnO thin film were deposited by Spray and Spray Pyrolysis methods on glass substrates at 370 °C. The structural characterization by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, EDS, TEM, SEM, RPE and XPS revealed the purity of ZnO Wurtzite variety in both samples. The use of a new loop reactor configuration for the photocatalytic activity was evaluated against/with respect to the degradation of two textile dyes as well as their binary mixture. The ZnO thin film prepared by Spray Pyrolysis kept its photocatalytic properties even after 20 reuse cycles (148 h). The treated solution showed better biodegradability and the absence of phytotoxicity.

The article discusses the need for improved monitoring of plants and pollinators in response to the challenges posed by pollution, climate change, and habitat loss. The current methods of collecting occurrence data are limited in their ability to detect short-term trends and monitor conservation efforts. Imiqualines are analogues of the immunomodulatory drug imiquimod. EAPB02303, the lead of the second-generation imiqualines, is characterized by significant anti-tumor effects with IC50s in the nanomolar range. We used Caenorhabditis elegans transgenic and mutant strains of two key signaling pathways (PI3K-Akt and Ras-MAPK) disrupted in human cancers to investigate the mode of action of EAPB02303. The ability of this imiqualine to inhibit the insulin/IGF1 signaling (IIS) pathway via the PI3K-Akt kinase cascade was explored through assessing the lifespan of wild-type worms. Micromolar doses of EAPB02303 significantly enhanced longevity of N2 strain and led to the nuclear translocation and subsequent activation of transcription factor DAF-16, the only forkhead box transcription factor class O (Fox O) homolog in C. elegans. Moreover, EAPB02303 significantly reduced the multivulva phenotype in let-60/Ras mutant strains MT2124 and MT4698, indicative of its mode of action through the Ras pathway. In summary, we showed that EAPB02303 potently reduced the activity of IIS and Ras-MAPK signaling in C. elegans. Our results revealed the mechanism of action of EAPB02303 against human cancers associated with hyperactivated IIS pathway and oncogenic Ras mutations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: The accurate classification of habitats is essential for effective biodiversity conservation. The goal of this study was to harness the potential of deep learning to advance habitat identification in Europe. We aimed to develop and evaluate models capable of assigning vegetation‐plot records to the habitats of the European Nature Information System (EUNIS), a widely used reference framework for European habitat types. Location: The framework was designed for use in Europe and adjacent areas (e.g., Anatolia, Caucasus). Methods: We leveraged deep‐learning techniques, such as transformers (i.e., models with attention components able to learn contextual relations between categorical and numerical features) that we trained using spatial k‐fold cross‐validation (CV) on vegetation plots sourced from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA), to show that they have great potential for classifying vegetation‐plot records. We tested different network architectures, feature encodings, hyperparameter tuning and noise addition strategies to identify the optimal model. We used an independent test set from the National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS) to evaluate its performance and compare its results against the traditional expert systems. Results: Exploration of the use of deep learning applied to species composition and plot‐location criteria for habitat classification led to the development of a framework containing a wide range of models. Our selected algorithm, applied to European habitat types, significantly improved habitat classification accuracy, achieving a more than twofold improvement compared to the previous state‐of‐the‐art (SOTA) method on an external data set, clearly outperforming expert systems. The framework is shared and maintained through a GitHub repository. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the potential benefits of the adoption of deep learning for improving the accuracy of vegetation classification. They highlight the importance of incorporating advanced technologies into habitat monitoring. These algorithms have shown to be better suited for habitat type prediction than expert systems. They push the accuracy score on a database containing hundreds of thousands of standardized presence/absence European surveys to 88.74%, as assessed by expert judgment. Finally, our results showcase that species dominance is a strong marker of ecosystems and that the exact cover abundance of the flora is not required to train neural networks with predictive performances. As a part of modern technological environments, virtual microscopy enriches histological learning, with support from large institutional investments. However, existing literature does not supply empirical evidence of its role in improving pedagogy. Virtual microscopy provides fresh opportunities for investigating user behavior during the histology learning process, through digitized histological slides. This study establishes how students' perceptions and user behavior data can be processed and analyzed using machine learning algorithms. These also provide predictive data called learning analytics that enable predicting students' performance and behavior favorable for academic success. This information can be interpreted and used for validating instructional designs. Data on the perceptions, performances, and user behavior of 552 students enrolled in a histology course were collected from the virtual microscope, Cytomine®. These data were analyzed using an ensemble of machine learning algorithms, the extra‐tree regression method, and predictive statistics. The predictive algorithms identified the most pertinent histological slides and descriptive tags, alongside 10 types of student behavior conducive to academic success. We used these data to validate our instructional design, and align the educational purpose, learning outcomes, and evaluation methods of digitized histological slides on Cytomine®. This model also predicts students' examination scores, with an error margin of <0.5 out of 20 points. In this study, TiO2 nanospheres (TiO2-NS) were synthesized by the solvothermal method. Firstly, the synthesized nanomaterial was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS). To study the photocatalytic degradation of Tartrazine (TTZ) and Naphthol Blue Black (NBB) in a binary mixture, the influence of some key parameters such as pH, pollutant concentration and catalyst dose was taken into account under visible and UV light. The results show a 100% degradation efficiency for TTZ after 150 min of UV irradiation and 57% under visible irradiation at 180 min. The kinetic study showed a good pseudo-first-order fit to the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. Furthermore, in order to get closer to the real conditions of textile wastewater, the influence of the presence of salt on TiO2-NS's photocatalytic performance was explored by employing NaCl as an inorganic ion. The optimum conditions provided by the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) were low concentrations of TTZ (2 ppm) and NBB (2.33 ppm) and negligible salt (NaCl) interference. The percentage of photodegradation was high at low pollutant and NaCl concentrations. However, this yield became very low as NaCl concentrations increased. The photocatalytic treatment leads to 31% and 53% of mineralization yield after 1 and 3 h of visible light irradiation. The synthesis of TiO2-NS provides new insights that will help to develop an efficient photocatalysts for the remediation of contaminated water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Toxoplasma gondii is the etiologic agent of toxoplasmosis, a highly prevalent parasitosis. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) transits in the brain from acute (AT) to chronic toxoplasmosis (CT), under host immune control. In immunocompromised patients, reactivation of CT is potentially life-threatening. Behavioral and neurological complications have been associated with CT. Furthermore, an effective treatment targeting CT is still lacking. We previously reported the efficacy of imiquimod against CT. Here, we demonstrate the molecular effects of imiquimod or imiquimod followed by the clinically used combination of sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine (SDZ + PYR) on CT-associated behavior in a rat model. Imiquimod decreased the number of cysts in the brains of chronically infected rats due to an induced reactivation of bradyzoites into tachyzoites. Importantly, this decrease was more pronounced in rats treated with imiquimod followed by SDZ + PYR. Rats chronically infected with T. gondii exhibited an anxiety-like behavior. Notably, treatment with imiquimod reversed this behavior aberrancy, with even a more pronounced effect with imiquimod followed by SDZ/PYR. Similarly, rats chronically infected with T. gondii exhibited learning deficits, and imiquimod alone or followed by SDZ/PYR reversed this behavior. Our results enhance our knowledge of the implications of CT on behavioral aberrancies and highlight the potency of imiquimod followed by SDZ + PYR on these CT-associated complications. Amyloidosis is a rare disease especially the localized form involving pulmonary parenchyma. We report the case of a 74 years old woman who presented with chest pain and dyspnoea. CT scan showed pulmonary embolism and bilateral nodules. Laboratory examinations highlighted circulating Kappa IgM. 18F-FDG PET/CT showed intense activity of the nodules. Histological investigation supported the diagnosis of nodular pulmonary amyloidosis. There were no sign of systemic amyloidosis or autoimmune disease. No treatment was initiated: the patient remains asymptomatic after one year. Localized pulmonary amyloidosis related to MGUS was the most likely diagnosis. Malignancy, a differential diagnosis of pulmonary amyloidosis, must be excluded: histological examinations are overriding. Difference between systemic and localized amyloidosis conditions treatment and prognosis. This observation emphasizes the difficulty to establish the diagnosis of pulmonary nodular amyloidosis and the complex relationship between amyloidosis and thromboembolism.

In this wok, a new CuO-TiO2-clay composite was synthesized by the sol–gel method and explored as a photocatalyst for wastewater remediation. The synthesized material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Fourier Transformer InfraRed (FTIR). The photocatalytic activity of the composite was tested on tartrazine dye (TARTZ) removal. Particular emphasis was focused on the effect of the key operating parameters such as photocatalyst dose, pH, light intensity, and initial concentration of dye. The optimization of three simultaneous parameters, namely methylene blue concentration (MB; pollutant in competition with TARTZ), NaCl concentration, and irradiation time, was examined via the response surface methodology (RSM). The CuO-TiO2-clay composite showed the best photocatalytic performance with 62.50% of photodegradation yield of TARTZ in visible light irradiation compared to 19.38% and 43.78% for pure TiO2 and TiO2-clay, respectively. This performance reached to 100% in sunlight source during the same time. The optimal conditions provided by the response surface methodology (RSM) were 180 min for irradiation time and 3.6 mg/L for MB concentration. After 120 min, 11.35% of TARTZ mineralization was obtained. The scavenger study revealed the involvement of OH· and h+ species, but especially O 2 -. as the main responsible for the photodegradation of the TARTZ. The current study highlights the potential of CuO-TiO2-clay composite as efficient photocatalytic systems for degrading hazardous organic pollutants in water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EU policies, such as the EU biodiversity strategy 2030 and the Birds and Habitats Directives, demand unbiased, integrated and regularly updated biodiversity and ecosystem service data. However, efforts to monitor wildlife and other species groups are spatially and temporally fragmented, taxonomically biased, and lack integration in Europe. To bridge this gap, the MAMBO project will develop, test and implement enabling tools for monitoring conservation status and ecological requirements of species and habitats for which knowledge gaps still exist. MAMBO brings together the technical expertise of computer science, remote sensing, social science expertise on human-technology interactions, environmental economy, and citizen science, with the biological expertise on species, ecology, and conservation biology. MAMBO is built around stakeholder engagement and knowledge exchange (WP1) and the integration of new technology with existing research infrastructures (WP2). MAMBO will develop, test, and demonstrate new tools for monitoring species (WP3) and habitats (WP4) in a co-design process to create novel standards for species and habitat monitoring across the EU and beyond. MAMBO will work with stakeholders to identify user and policy needs for biodiversity monitoring and investigate the requirements for setting up a virtual lab to automate workflow deployment and efficient computing of the vast data streams (from on the ground sensors, and remote sensing) required to improve monitoring activities across Europe (WP4). Together with stakeholders, MAMBO will assess these new tools at demonstration sites distributed across Europe (WP5) to identify bottlenecks, analyze the cost-effectiveness of different tools, integrate data streams and upscale results (WP6). This will feed into the co-design of future, improved and more cost-effective monitoring schemes for species and habitats using novel technologies (WP7), and thus lead to a better management of protected sites and species.
