Surface morphology and bulk structure of polylactide (PLA) modified with halloysite nanotubes (HNT) treated with N,N'-ethylenebis(stearamide) (EBS) and untreated, as well as reference materials - PLA, EBS, and a blend of PLA with EBS, were examined. HNT is known to improve PLA properties, including mechanical and barrier properties. The materials were cold crystallized and tested using DSC, TGA, PLM, SALS, SEM, AFM. The additives affected nucleation and crystallization of PLA, but did not influence crystallinity, which was of approx. 37-40%. In bulk, PLA crystallized in the form of spherulites in all materials. However, on surfaces of EBS-containing materials, a thin EBS layer with domain morphology was found. The EBS layer induced epitaxial crystallization of PLA in the form of parallel stacks of edge-on lamellae, the phenomenon reported for this polymer pair for the first time. It was observed in PLA with EBS modified HNT and in the PLA blend with EBS. Moreover, the EBS layers imparted hydrophobicity to the EBS-containing materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of hygrothermal aging on the mechanical behaviour of polyamide 6 (PA6) material filled with 10 wt % multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been investigated experimentally. Young’s modulus and flexural modulus of the materials are decreased by more than 30% for the conditions of 25°C/85% RH, compared to the reference conditions of 25°C/55% RH (RT), while the flexural strength by 6–17%. The decrease is larger for the conditions of 40°C/85% RH, which reveals that the effect of combined elevated temperature and moisture is more severe. The decrease in the properties is smaller for the MWCNT/PA6 specimens, which shows that the presence of MWCNTs mitigates the effect of hygrothermal aging. Finally, it is observed that the increase in the properties of the MWCNT/PA6 material is so large, for the specific MWCNT concentration, that it compensates the negative effect of hygrothermal aging. In this communication, we highlight the remarkable and unexpected mechanical and electrical properties of new porous nanohybrid materials as readily obtained by a two-step preparation procedure. Neat multi-wall carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced benzoxazine nanocomposites were first produced. At a CNT content of 5 wt%, pyrolysis of the nanocomposites allowed for recovering porous monolithic nanohybrid materials exhibiting outstanding mechanical resistance (elastic modulus of ca. 50 MPa) for an electrical conductivity as high as 30 S cm−1. Interestingly, long CNTs were found to build up an internal scaffold limiting the deformation of the foamed structure and preserving the geometric shape and dimensional integrity of the sample along the pyrolysis process. The concept of this novel approach paves the way for the production of a very promising choice of viable (nano)materials for use as domains as versatile as in energy storage, catalysis, or shielding applications. Bio- and CO2-sourced non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) microcellular foams were prepared using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) foaming technology. These low-density foams offer low thermal conductivity and have an impressive potential for use in insulating materials. They constitute attractive alternatives to conventional polyurethane foams. We investigated CO2's ability to synthesize the cyclic carbonates that are used in the preparation of NIPU by melt step-growth polymerization with a bio-sourced amino-telechelic oligoamide and for NIPU foaming. Our study shows that CO2 is not only sequestered in the material for long-term application, but is also valorized as a blowing agent in the production of NIPU foams. Summary: The influence of the incorporation of hydrophobic nanosilica on morphological and mechanical properties of polyamide 6 (PA) and poly(propylene) (PP) blends has been investigated. Depending on the amount of silica nanoparticles in the blend and the melt mixing procedure, a strong refinement of PP (as minor dispersed phase) droplet size can be achieved thanks to the interfacial confinement of nanoparticles. The accumulation of nanoparticles at the interface allows the formation of an anti-coalescence rigid barrier around PP domains that prevents/refrains dispersed phase domains from coalescence as highlighted by transmission and scanning electron microscopies. The mechanical properties of the hybrid blends were also discussed and interpreted in relation with the blend morphology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a system for human body analysis (segmentation, tracking, face/hands localisation, posture recognition) from a single view that is fast and completely automatic. The system first extracts low-level data and uses part of the data for high-level interpretation. It can detect and track several persons even if they merge or are completely occluded by another person from the camera's point of view. For the high-level interpretation step, static posture recognition is performed using a belief theory-based classifier. The belief theory is considered here as a new approach for performing posture recognition and classification using imprecise and/or conflicting data. Four different static postures are considered: standing, sitting, squatting, and lying. The aim of this paper is to give a global view and an evaluation of the performances of the entire system and to describe in detail each of its processing steps, whereas our previous publications focused on a single part of the system. The efficiency and the limits of the system have been highlighted on a database of more than fifty video sequences where a dozen different individuals appear. This system allows real-time processing and aims at monitoring elderly people in video surveillance applications or at the mixing of real and virtual worlds in ambient intelligence systems.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been intensively investigated in recent years for their antibacterial properties, with DESs that comprise organic acids (OA-DESs) showing promising antibacterial action. However a majority of the reports focused only on a limited number strains and techniques, which is not enough to determine the antibacterial potential of a substance. To bridge this gap, the antibacterial activity of classical DESs and OA-DESs is assessed on twelve Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria strains, with some of them exhibiting specific resistance toward antibiotics. The investigated formulations of OA-DESs comprise glycolic, malic, malonic, and oxalic acids as representatives of this group. Using a range of microbiological assays as well as physicochemical characterization methods, a major difference of the effectiveness between the two groups is demonstrated, with OA-DESs exhibiting, as expected, greater antibacterial effectiveness than classical DESs. Most interestingly, slight differences in the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration values as well as time-kill kinetics profiles are observed between Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals the effect of the treatment of the bacteria with the representatives of both groups of DESs, which allows us to better understand the possible mechanism-of-action of these novel materials., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Shapeable and flexible pressure sensors with superior mechanical and electrical properties are of major interest as they can be employed in a wide range of applications. In this regard, elastomer-based composites incorporating carbon nanomaterials in the insulating matrix embody an appealing solution for designing flexible pressure sensors with specific properties. In this study, PDMS chains of different molecular weight were successfully functionalized with benzoxazine moieties in order to thermally cure them without adding a second component, nor a catalyst or an initiator. These precursors were then blended with 1 weight percent of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using an ultrasound probe, which induced a transition from a liquid-like to a gel-like behavior as CNTs generate an interconnected network within the matrix. Negative capacitance (NC), already observed in conducting polymer-based nanocomposites, was recently reported and evidenced at low frequencies (<10 kHz) in non-conducting polymer-based nanocomposites containing conductive particles. In this contribution, we demonstrate that it is possible to produce economic high-density polyethylene (HDPE) nanocomposites exhibiting an NC effect at low frequencies via a convenient and environmentally friendly extrusion-like process by only adjusting the duration of melt-mixing. Nanocomposite materials are produced by confining a limited quantity, i.e., 4.6 wt.%, of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within semi-crystalline HDPE to reach the percolation threshold. With increasing melt processing time, crystallites of HDPE developing at the surface of CNTs become bigger and perturbate the connections between CNTs leading to a dramatic change in the electrical behavior of the systems. More specifically, the link between NC and current oscillations is stressed while the dependence of NC with the size of polymer crystallites is evidenced. NC tends to appear when space charge effects take place in HDPE/MWCNT interfaces, in structures with convenient crystallite sizes corresponding to 10 min of melt-mixing.

Medical implants have improved the quality of life of many patients. However, surgical intervention may eventually lead to implant microbial contamination. The aims of this research were to develop an easy, robust, quantitative assay to assess surface antimicrobial activities, especially the anti-nascent biofilm activity, and to identify control surfaces, allowing for international comparisons. Using new antimicrobial assays to assess the inhibition of nascent biofilm during persistent contact or after transient contact with bacteria, we show that the 5 cent Euro coin or other metal-based antibacterial coins can be used as positive controls, as more than 4 log reduction on bacterial survival was observed when using either S. aureus or P. aeruginosa as targets. The methods and controls described here could be useful to develop an easy, flexible and standardizable assay to assess relevant antimicrobial activities of new implant materials developed by industries and academics.

This work details the scalable and solventless synthesis of a potential fully biobased monobenzoxazine resin derived from tyrosol and furfurylamine. The structure of the monomer was studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The curing of the precursors was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheological measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The properties of the resulting biobased polybenzoxazine were then determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA). A thermally stable resin was obtained with 5% and 10% weight-reduction-temperature ( T d5 and T d10 ) values of 349 and 395 °C, respectively, and a char yield of 53%. Moreover, the low melting temperature, low viscosity, and excellent thermomechanical behavior make this fully biobased resin a promising candidate for coating applications.
