The term Bibliography in a title of one of Ranganathan’s works (Physical Bibliography for Librarians) is unusual, because it occurs only in two other volumes that Ranganathan dedicates to reference service, and curious, because for the disciplinary field of libraries Ranganathan is famous for having spread the expression Library science. The presentation dwells on the meaning of Social bibliography and develops it in two directions: the relationship with other disciplines that deal with books, and the analysis of the concept of the book as a trinity consisting of a soul, a subtle body and a gross body. Traditional UBC provides for the standardization of bibliographic records, the creation of guidelines dedicated to national bibliographic agencies, the creation of the UNIMARC format, and the curation of authority data. Bibliographic Control has deeply evolved since IFLA theorization during the Seventies of the XX Century, due to the availability of a very large range of new bibliographic tools. At the beginning of the XXI century, UBC is quite different and involves new actors. Among these, Wikidata has a background greatly different from that of libraries as institutions: it is not devoted to bibliographic data, nor it is limited to personal authority control, but its value in AC tools like VIAF and National Libraries authority files is undiscussed. After a presentation on how Wikidata items describe and identify bibliographic entities, the authors underline how the existence, use and reuse of Wikidata affect the way the professional community thinks about UBC. Wikidata is a clear example of the need for a new approach to identification and description, that are deeply intertwined. Secondly, from a Wikidata perspective, the relevance of globally preferred and variant access points is lessened. Moreover, descriptions in Wikidata – although conceptually very similar to the traditional one – present differences and potentialities that a traditional description does not have and cannot have. Also from a theoretical perspective, Wikidata offers a pragmatic way to think globally and act locally. In fact, it shows that there is no need for one standardization of practices for establishing the headings and structure of authority records in one international form; instead, users’ convenience can be achieved by a technological infrastructure capable to present to each user the information about an entity in its own language and script. Additionally, Wikidata is the most evident example of the distributed and diffused approach of the semantic web to the issue of the universal identification of the entities. Also, Wikidata identification and description show that authority and bibliographic control must be tackled as just a part of the more general topic of the creation of a knowledge graph of all human knowledge by means of linked open data. Lastly, this objective cannot be achieved only by contribution, cooperation, and networking of large national agencies (as in VIAF), as a larger number of stakeholders must be involved to achieve a UBC also including the full indexing of any kind of scientific communication

RDA (Resource Description and Access) is going to promote a great change in cataloguing. In fact, guidelines - rather than rules - are addressed to anyone wishing to describe and make accessible a cultural heritage collection or tout court a collection: librarians, archivists, curators and professionals in any other branch of knowledge. RDA aims to make possible creation of well-structured metadata for any kind of resources, reusable in any context and technological environment. RDA offers a “set of guidelines and instructions to create data for discovery of resources”. Guidelines stress four actions - to identify, to relate (from FRBR/FRAD user tasks and ICP), to represent and to discover - and a noun: Resource. To identify entities of Group 1 and Group 2 of FRBR (Work, Expression, Manifestation, Item, Person, Family, Corporate Body); to relate entities of Group 1 and Group 2 of FRBR, by means of relationships. To enable users to represent and discover entities of Group 1 and Group 2 by means of their attributes and relationships. These last two actions are the reason of users’ searches, and users are the pinpoint of the process. RDA enables the discovery of recorded knowledge, that is any resources transmitting intellectual or artistic content by means of any kind of carrier and media. RDA is a content standard, not a display standard nor an encoding standard: it gives instructions to identify data and does not care about how to display or encode data produced by guidelines. RDA requires an original approach, a metanoia, a deep change in the way we think about cataloguing. Innovations in RDA are many: it promotes interoperability between catalogs and other search tools, it adopts terminology and concepts of the Semantic Web, it is a global standard, it can be applied by different agencies to create data. RDA is expected to be enriched by the wide community of professional, from the whole world, in a collaborative, well-aware, recognized and global perspective. By RDA, the great tradition of cataloguing goes one step further and enters in the digital age definitively.

The paper deals with the issue of the method of arrangement of the results of a opac search. For this reason, the paper presents the conceptual structure of shelf classified arrangement of documents (filiatory sequence) by Colon Classification. It shows with examples that filiatory sequence complies with principles provided for bibliographies by Pollard and Krummel, it presents a complete structure of data and relationships provided by actual cataloguing theory, and it manages correctly relationships among a Work and its associated entities (FRBR). The paper shows that the filiatory sequence expresses a holistic vision of the catalog, creating a complex bibliographic organization that represents with exhaustiveness semantic content, literary relationships, and formal features of the resources. The use of conceptual structure of filiatory sequence in ranking search results is suggested and its relevance for creating new navigating tools is highlighted.

The paper presents the results of a research about Museum libraries in Italy during year 2009. Statistics about political and financial organization, staff, automation, cooperation, holdings, multimedial resources, users, and other aspects of 64 Museum libraries are given.

This paper deals with lack of FRBR-zation of present online catalogues and with a way to organize on the shelves resources by FRBR entities using Colon Classification book number.Main results of this analysis are: categories expressed by FBRB were already identified by Ranganathan in its bibliographic system; Colon classification book number allows a higher degree of arrangement of bibliographic resources, i.e. compliant to FRBR entities; also for this reason, Colon classification book number is better than Cutter-Sanborn system; in Classified Catalogue ideated by Ranganathan both the aspects of cataloguing (semantic and semiotic) are integrated; facet formula for book number is a special device that allows to switch from classification to identification of bibliographic resources, inasmuch book number is an identifying device included in a classification system.

The paper discusses the changes that are occurring in the world of cataloguing. It argues that these changes need to be coordinated. It also discusses the feature of current OPACs, FRBR, the Paris Principles and the new International Cataloguing Principles (ICP), AACR2 and the new RDA (Resource Description and Access), ISBD, and the relationships between and among these principles, standards and rules. It argues that the syntax of ISBD is an essential component of RDA and all future international and national cataloguing codes. ISBD means bibliographic analysis; it is not be reduced at a simple data presentation scheme.

The paper describes the history, the meaning, the structure and the text of the ISBD preliminary consolidated edition and the issues relating to its Italian translation. The online version of the Italian translation of International standard bibliographic description (ISBD), preliminary consolidated edition, was published in August 2009. The translation aims to promote the standard in Italy and is the result of nearly two years of work. The Italian Translation Working Group worked by email and periodic meetings, and met also with ICCU to check the whole translation and to discuss single difficult questions. The process of editing of the ISBD provisional consolidated edition, translation issues, differences among ISBD and Italian cataloguing uses, GMDs and SMDs, Glossary and the relationship between ISBD and REICAT are discussed. Italian translation work was also a valuable opportunity to contribute with ISBD Review Group to the setting up of the final version of the standard. The Italian Translation Working Group steadily submitted comments to the ISBD Review Group, contributing to the ongoing debate among the editors and determining some revisions in the text.

Within this framework, the authors analyze the Italian cataloguing tradition and its relationships with the international tradition and recount the main activities towards a revision of the present Italian code - Regole italiane di catalogazione per autori RICA. The paper shows that, since the first Italian rules written by Fumagalli, special attention has been paid to the international tradition (in particular toward Panizzis rules). After describing the relationships among the international trends and the Italian codes of 1922, 1956 and 1979, the paper deals with the recent works of the new Commission that, since 1997, has started to revise RICA. The paper concludes by reflecting on the Italian position in the debate first on the ISBD and then on the new entity-relationship models

The paper presents Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, his theory of library science, his ideas about the role of the bibliographic classification in the management of the library and discusses the development of the ideas that conducted to the creation of Colon Classification

In October, 2011, the Library Linked Data Incubator Group (LLD XG) created by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) published its final report. This report suggest libraries how they should made their data available in the web (and not just on the web), to make them available also directly by search engines. To comply with requirements the report, libraries should publish their data in a more expressive form, in which also values of relationships among data must be registered. The paper illustrates main features and requirements of library linked data, as described in the report and in relation to cataloguing topic, explains issues relating to the present format of library data and discuss the opportunities offered by RDA and REICAT, the two codes of rules published in compliant with FRBR.
