Glycan-bound nanoprobes have been demonstrated as suitable sensing probes for bacteria containing glycan binding sites. In this study, we demonstrated a facile approach for generating glycan-bound gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The generated AuNCs were used as sensing probes for corresponding target bacteria. Mannose-capped AuNCs (AuNCs@Mann) were generated and used as the model sensors for target bacteria. A one-step synthesis approach was employed to generate AuNCs@Mann. In this approach, an aqueous solution of tetrachloroauric acid and mannoside that functionized with a thiol group (Mann-SH) was stirred at room temperature for 48 h. The mannoside functions as reducing and capping agent. The size of the generated AuNCs@Mann is 1.95±0.27 nm, whereas the AuNCs with red photoluminescence have a maximum emission wavelength of ~630 nm (λexcitation = 375 nm). The synthesis of the AuNCs@Mann was accelerated by microwave heating, which enabled the synthesis of the AuNCs@Mann to complete within 1 h. The generated AuNCs@Mann are capable of selectively binding to the urinary tract infection isolate Escherichia coli J96 containing the mannose binding protein FimH expressed on the type 1 pili. On the basis of the naked eye observation, the limit of detection of the sensing approach is as low as ~2×10(6) cells/mL.

Background: Perinatal asphyxia continues to be a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. It causes multiorgan failure with brain involvement as the major organ of concern (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy). Cardiac dysfunction is also a feature of perinatal asphyxia. Objective of our study was to find out the incidence of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in neonates with their immediate outcome, how stages of AKI is related to mortality and what are the common co-morbid conditions among AKI deaths. In this observational prospective study we included the newborns with features suggestive of AKI with exclusion criteria of major congenital anomaly and extreme prematurity. AKI was diagnosed and classified according to the KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcome) guideline taking serum creatinine and urine output as determinant. Cases were followed up till discharge or death. Now we have figured out the incidence of AKI in different stages, its immediate outcome and what are the percentage of mortality within each stage. Among the AKI deaths, we sort out the associated co-morbid conditions like perinatal asphyxia, sepsis, shock, prematurity, etc. and analyzed all the results statistically. Out of total 1923 neonates admitted during the 18 months study period we found AKI in 119 neonates (6.18%). Among them 75(63.03%), 26(21.85%) and 18(15.12%) neonates were in KDIGO stage 1, 2 and 3 respectively. We were able to discharge 68 neonates, 30 expired and the rest were referred out or LAMA. When we compare mortality among different stage, we found that it was 9.33% in stage 1 and 38.46% and 72.22% in stage 2 and 3 respectively. Among the various co-morbid conditions present among the expired neonates, sepsis(13) and perinatal asphyxia(12) were the leading ones followed by prematurity(3)and PPHN(2). So the conclusion is, if we can identify AKI early then chance of survival is better as we have shown in our study that mortality increases with the advancement of AKI stage. Reactions of the aminoiminophenols 2-((2-(dimethylamino)ethylimino)methyl)phenol (HL1) or 2-{(3-(dimethylamino)propylimino)methyl}phenol (HL2) with nickel(II) chloride, K2[PtCl4] or copper(II) acetate in alcoholic solution, in the absence or in the presence of sodium azide, afford the corresponding new mononuclear complexes [M(L1)(X)(H2O)n] [M = Ni, X = Cl−, n = 2 (1); M = Ni, X = N3−, n = 0 (2); M = Pt, X = Cl−(3) or N3−(4), n = 0] or the known dinuclear compound [Cu(L2)(N3)]2(5). Complexes 2, 4and 5react with 2-cyanopyridine leading to the [2 + 3] cycloaddition products with 5-(2-pyridyl)tetrazolato [PTZ = N4C(2-NC5H4)] ligands [Ni(L1)(PTZ)]2(6), [Pt(L1)(PTZ)] (7) and [Cu(PTZ)2(H2O)2] 8. The obtained complexes were characterized by IR, 1H and 13C (for 3, 4and 7) NMR spectroscopies, elemental analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses (for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6and 8). Complexes 1and 8form finite 1D chains and 3D frameworks, respectively, on account of extensive hydrogen bonds involving their coordinated water molecules and the chloride ligand (in the case of 1) or tetrazolato nitrogen atoms (in the case of 8). Bronchorrhea is defined as production of more than 100 mL watery sputum per day. Although found in several diseases and disorders, it is classically described in bronchioloalveolar cell lung carcinoma. It hampers the quality of life of the patient with lung cancer. Several treatment options are available for relief of this distressing symptom; however, none of them are effective in all cases. We herein report a case of a female with bronchioloalveolar cell lung carcinoma who presented with bronchorrhea. She showed dramatic symptomatic improvement with therapy with gefitinib.

Pneumothorax occurs more frequently in people with Human immunodeficiency virus infection in comparison with the general population. In most cases it is secondary the underlying pulmonary disorder, especially pulmonary infections. Though Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia is most common pulmonary infection associated with pneumothorax, other infections, non-infective etiology and iatrogenic causes are also encountered. Pneumothorax in these patients are associated with persistent bronchopleural fistula, prolonged hospital stay, poor success with intercostal tube drain, frequent requirement of surgical intervention and increased mortality. Optimal therapeutic approach in these patients is still not well-defined.

A bifid sternum is a rare congenital anomaly generally diagnosed as asymptomatic at birth. It is sometimes associated with other congenital anomalies. The sternal defects are best corrected surgically during the neonatal period within the first month of life. Sometimes the defect may be diagnosed only in adult life. We here report a case of bifid sternum which was diagnosed incidentally in a 23-year-old male.

We present the case of a boy with a clinical diagnosis of Goltz syndrome (focal dermal hypoplasia), a rare genodermatosis characterized by widespread dysplasia of mesodermal and ectodermal tissues. A 9-year-old male patient with Goltz syndrome presented with typical skin lesions along with progressive dimness of vision and mental retardation since birth. It is inherited in an X-linked dominant fashion and is normally lethal in male patients, and so very few male patients, like the index case, have been reported.
