Abstract

AIM: To investigate the influence of non-oil 95 (N95)/filtering facepiece 2 (FFP2) facemask wear on retinal thickness, choroidal thickness (CT), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), and ganglion cell layer thickness (GCLT) in healthy subjects. METHODS: In this prospective study, 53 healthy participants who used FFP2/N95 facemask were enrolled. Participants underwent optical coherence tomography imaging before and at 1 and 4h following FFP2/N95 facemask wear. The last imaging session was performed 1h after FFP2/N95 removal. Retinal thickness, CT, RNFLT, and GCLT were assessed at each session. Vital parameters were also assessed. Abstract

AIM:To evaluate the central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements of premature infantsMETHODS: The premature infants who were born between 25-34wk of gestational age (GA) were retrieved for the study. All CCT measurements were performed within the first 2d of their life under topical anesthesia by using an ultrasonic pachymeter.RESULTS: The mean CCT of 200 eyes was 647.79±63.94 µm. The mean CCT of the right and left eyes were similar (647.30±64.72 µm and 648.29±63.47 µm consecutively). The mean CCT of the girls was 642.08±54.89 µm and the boys was 653.07±71.14 µm, with no statistically significant difference (P>0.05). But there was a negative correlation of the CCT with GA and birth weight (BW) (P<0.01).CONCLUSION:The CCT values of premature babies were negatively correlated with GA and BW.

5. Purtscher-Like Retinopathy Associated with Anorexia Nervosa

Abstract

A 21-year-old girl presented with acute painless vision loss in her right eye. There was no remarkable ocular history and she had a history of anorexia nervosa. At presentation best-corrected visual acuities were counting fingers from 2 meters and 20/20, in the right and left eyes, respectively. Slit lamp examination result was normal. Fundus examination revealed multiple cotton wool spots and intraretinal hemorrhages surrounding the optic disc and macula in the right eye. Fluorescein angiography showed capillary filling defect and leakage from optic disc in the late phase of the angiogram. One week later best-corrected visual acuities remained the same in both eyes with similar fundus appearance. One month after initial presentation visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes with no abnormality in fundus appearance.

Abstract

Aim:To assess the demographic characteristics and clinical aspects of superficial corneal foreign body (CFB) trauma, as well as to estimate the impact of awareness of CFB scar on wearing protective goggles (PG).Materials and Methods:A total of 238 patients were enrolled in this prospective study. Four groups were designated, namely group 1-metal industry workers, group 2-construction workers, group 3-workers with different occupations who had considerable risk for CFB trauma and group 4-miscellaneous patients with low risk for CFB trauma.Results:There were 234 (98.3%) men and four (1.7%) women in the study. The mean age was 33.96±10.54 years (range, 3-69 years). There were 126 patients (52.9%) in group 1, 53 patients (22.3%) in group 2, 27 patients (11.3%) in group 3 and 32 patients (13.4%) in group 4. Seventy-nine patients (38.4%) did not use PG, while, 67 patients (32.5%) occasionally used PG, 34 patients (16.5%) frequently used PG and 26 patients (12.6%) routinely used PG. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of three different surgical techniques for foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) implantation in vitrectomized eyes without capsular support. Methods: A total of 60 patients with aphakic and vitrectomized eyes without capsular support were enrolled. All patients underwent three-piece foldable PCIOL implantation into the posterior chamber through a small corneal incision. Transscleral fixation (TSF), iris fixation (IF), and intrascleral tunnel fixation (ISF) surgical techniques were performed. Results: Postoperative PCIOL subluxation or dislocation occurred in one case in the TSF group and two cases in the ISF group. Intraoperative PCIOL dislocation occurred in two patients in the IF group. The incidence of temporary postoperative complications, such as mild intraocular hemorrhage and cystoid macular edema, was higher in the ISF group. No statistically significant difference in PCIOL-related astigmatism was observed between groups. Visual acuity improved in all groups. Conclusions: Postoperative outcomes were comparable between TSF, IF, and ISF for PCIOL in vitrectomized eyes without capsular support.
