Abstract

This paper examines the determinants of differences in premiums that public and private sellers receive in the banking industry. The authors state that deposit premiums received in private sector transactions surpassed the premiums received by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC). Evidence suggests that bank branches are Independent Value Objects whose auctions result in unintended transfers of value to the winning bidders. This result suggests that not all of the positive cumulative abnormal returns are due to market inefficiency. This working paper is available at the US Federal Reserve Board.
