Abstract

Understanding the genesis of Martian soils is important to constrain the hydrogeologic history of the planet. Soils have the potential to record paleoenvironmental conditions, through the nature of secondary minerals formed during weathering. In situ X‐ray diffraction analyses in Gale crater have revealed that about one third of each soil sample is composed of amorphous materials containing hydrated phases. Here, we use the geochemical data from the ChemCam instrument to investigate the nature and origin of the hydrated amorphous phases. We report for the first time with ChemCam clues for the presence of sulfates within the amorphous component of soils. We show that sulfates are the main carrier of the soil hydration and possibly explain the nature of hydrogen and sulfur measured from orbit. These sulfates and the apparent lack of significant Al‐bearing weathering products are consistent with a model of soil formation including weathering of olivine in water‐limited acidic conditions. Plain Language Summary: The study of Martian soils is of considerable interest as the nature of the mineral phases they contain, formed by the action of water for some of them, can give information on the past environments of the planet. Mineralogical analyses in Gale crater have shown that about one third of soils are composed of poorly crystalline materials whose nature remains unclear, and that soil hydration could be associated with these phases. Here, we use the chemical analyses from the ChemCam instrument to investigate the composition of the hydrogen‐bearing products, and we report for the first time the presence of sulfates in soils with this instrument. We demonstrate that sulfates are the main contributor to the water content of soils and are probably the source of the hydrogen and sulfur measured from orbit. The presence of sulfates and the lack of significant other secondary materials, especially enriched in aluminum, suggest that soils have probably undergone an acidic aqueous alteration with a low quantity of water, favoring the dissolution of olivine as the precursor to sulfates. Abstract

The reference SEU Monitor system designed and presented in 2005 (R. H. Sorensen, F.-X. Guerre, and A. Roseng 'Design, testing and calibration of a reference SEU monitor system,' in Proc. RADECS, 2005, pp. B3-1-B3-7) has now been used by many researchers at many radiation test sites and has provided valuable calibration data in support of numerous projects. As some of these findings and results give new insight into improved inter-facility calibrations and provide additional inputs into ongoing SEE research, a few of the more interesting cases are presented. Furthermore the 'detector element', the Atmel AT60142F SRAM, now in a hybrid configuration, will form the key detector element in the Technology Demonstration Module (TDM) to be flown on-board the PROBA-II satellite, to be launched at the beginning of 2009. This flight opportunity extends the Reference SEU Database with both ground and space data, taken on the same device under identical operating conditions. Additionally, the Reference SEU Monitor concept is employed as the basis for the new Reference SEL Monitor system, currently under characterization and preparation for integration on the TDM. Ground SEU/SEL characterization of this latch-up experiment is also presented as well as the basic concept of the TDM, the PROBA-II Radiation Monitor module. Abstract

This paper presents experimental data showing heavy ions inducing gate degradation in power MOSFETs. In the experiments, backside and front-side irradiations are performed. During backside irradiation, the heavy ion ranges are tuned in such way to control whether they hit the gate or not. Gate-to-source current Igss ([PHI]) is measured versus heavy ions (H.I.) fluence [PHI]. Post-irradiation-gate-stress-test (PGST) allows measurement of gate breakdown voltage [V.sub.BD] ([PHI]) which is observed to decrease with (H.I.) fluence. Based on these experimental results, a hypothesis of substrate-generated carriers impact overlap of multiple strikes may explain gate degradation until SEGR triggering. This last hypothesis is supported by a statistical model approach of heavy ions multiple impacts. Abstract

Researchers performing radiation testing on electronic components often rely on semi-empirical prediction codes for determining the linear energy transfer (LET) (or electronic stopping force) of ions, without paying much attention to their reliability. However, it is seen that estimations calculated with different codes can have over 10% discrepancies, especially in the case of heavy ions with higher LET (e.g., xenon). As a consequence of the modern component fabrication techniques this has become an important issue when studying the radiation durability of electronics. In order to clarify this inconsistency, LET measurements for [sup.131]Xe and [sup.82]Kr in silicon have been undertaken and obtained results are presented, discussed and compared with earlier predicted data. The possibility to evaluate simultaneously the total ionizing dose and the displacement damage dose using a single OSL integrated sensor is demonstrated.
