Abstract

International audience; Experimentally, zirconium-based alloys oxidation kinetics is sub-parabolic, by contrast with the Wagner theory which predicts a parabolic kinetics.Two finite element models have been developed to simulate this phenomenon: the diffuse interface model and the sharp interface model. Both simulate parabolic oxidation kinetics.The growth stress effects on oxygen diffusion are studied to try to explain the gap between theory and experience. Taking into account the influence of the hydrostatic stress and its gradient into the oxygen flux expression, sub-parabolic oxidation kinetics have been simulated. The sub-parabolic behaviour of the oxidation kinetics can be explained by a non-uniform compressive stress level into the oxide layer.

Abstract

International audience; Micromechanical simulations of polycrystalline zirconia using the finite element method are performed in order to obtain the stresses at the grain scale of a zirconium oxide layer, since these microstresses are important for damage prediction of the layer and then oxidation kinetics. The crystallographic texture of the layer of monoclinic zirconia is taken into account. The results show that even under high compressive macroscopic stresses, the microstresses can contribute to lateral cracking promoted by the presence of tetragonal zirconia.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this work is to study the influence of crystallographic and morphological textures on the evaluation of the residual stresses in zirconium oxide layers by finite element computations. This is studied for thermal stresses at two scales: at a macroscopic scale to obtain the first residual stresses order and at a microscopic scale in order to obtain second residual stresses order, i.e. the intragranular stresses, but also to assess the equivalent behavior of the polycrystalline oxide by homogenization procedures. The results show that for thin layers: 1) the analytical formulas commonly used to derive the residual stresses from strain measurements can be used if the assumptions on the thermo-elastic properties of the oxide layer are correct; 2) computations on polycrystalline aggregates of zirconia give better assessments of the thermo-elastic properties of the polycrystalline oxide and showed that there is no influence of the morphological texture; 3) a large spread in intragranular stress distribution can be observed in the layer; this stress level should be integrated to the failure analysis of the zirconium oxide layers.

Abstract

Models allowing the prediction of the failure of structures by crack propagation were first introduced in the 50's using linear fracture mechanics whose principles were first proposed by Griffith (1920). This approach was extended to non-linear cases (plasticity and viscoplasticity) in the 70's based on the work of Rice (J or C* integrals); it has been largely adopted by the industry. However this so called global approach cannot deal with all practical cases and cannot explain all experimental observations as, for instance, the warm pre-stress effect (WPS). The local approach to fracture, which relies on a fine analysis of strains, stresses and damage of highly solicited regions (cracks, notches...) of structures is an alternative which allows to solve problems encountered while applying the global approach. It has been developed since the 80's in particular in France. Important research efforts are currently undertaken in this field in Europe (France, Germany), United States and Japan. This book presents several aspects of the local approach to fracture: damage mechanisms, experimental techniques, damage evolution law and failure criteria, modeling of damage, numerical simulation. This work is the result of a collective work carried out by the best French specialists (École des Mines de Paris, Ecole Centrale Paris, ENS Cachan, Université de Louvain, INSA Lyon, ONERA, EDF).

Abstract: Zirconium oxide layers are submitted to internal stresses that play a role in damage of the layer. If the first order stresses are usually measured or computed, the second order stresses are also important for damage prediction, but they are difficult to measure. Microstructure simulations are performed with the finite element method to obtain internal stresses at grain scale of zirconia. The influences of the crystallographic and morphological textures are studied for monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia. The results show that crystallographic texture has a strong influence on the second order stresses, but not the morphological texture. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Round tensile specimens of a C–Mn steel were tested at different strain rates and temperatures. Some of the samples tested in the Portevin–Le Chatelier (PLC) domain exhibit slant fracture surfaces. Spherical dimples were evidenced all over the slant fracture surfaces. Numerical simulations showed that stress triaxiality increases around PLC bands and that slant fracture occurs within a PLC band. In a round specimen, this band is plane and inclined, whereas some numerical results predict conical bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
