Natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites are the most widely used materials and preferable in terms of biodegradability, cost production, recyclability, and low density. The main aim of this study is to conduct an experimental investigation on tensile strength and impact strength of palmyra palm leaf stalk fiber (PLSF) and sisal fiber reinforced polymer hybrid composite. The composite material was fabricated using hand lay-up techniques. The working parameters are mass fraction ratio of PLSF/sisal fiber and volume fiber fraction with the matrix. Tensile strength and impact energy resistance tests were experimentally conducted according to the ASTM standard dimensions. The results revealed that the addition of sisal fiber to PLSF enhanced the tensile strength by 12.850 %, 26.540 %, and 30.630 % respectively compared to pure Palmyra palm leaf stalk fiber reinforced composite (PPFRC). Whereas, the addition of PLSF to sisal fiber improved the impact of energy by 20.980 %, 13.610 %, and 11.880 % compared to pure sisal fiber reinforced composite (PSFRC). The tensile strength with 20 % fiber volume fraction is improved by 53.996 % and 12.188 % compared to 10 % and 15 % of fiber respectively. The impact strength was also enhanced by 24.931 % and 10.030 % compared to 10 % and 15 % of volume fiber fraction respectively. The tensile strength and impact energy of the treated fiber composite increased by 62.243 % and 22.478 % respectively compared to the untreated hybrid Palmyra palm leaf stalk and sisal hybrid fiber reinforced composite (UHPSFRC). Generally, the HPSFRC-2 (Palmyra palm leaf stalk/sisal fiber) (P/S ratio 50/50 % ratio with 20/80 % ratio of fiber/matric percentage reinforced polymer hybrid composite) has good tensile strength and impact energy. Therefore, the mechanical property of the (Palm/Sisal) hybrid composite can be used for the manufacturing of the automotive interior parts like door panel, dash board, seat back, and automotive roof.

Natural fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites recently got great attention in biomedical applications due to their inherent characteristics such as biocompatibility, lightweight, and biodegradability. However, natural fiber composites suffer from poor mechanical properties and weak interfacial adhesion. It is well documented that the addition of nanofiller has improved the mechanical properties of different synthetic fibers such as glass and carbon composites. The main objective of this paper is to study nanofillers' effect on the mechanical properties of unidirectional false banana fibers reinforced polymer composites. The filler materials, crystalline nanocellulose fibrils, and crystalline nanosilica particles were extracted from sugarcane bagasse and its byproducts. The composite samples were fabricated by adding the nanofillers in unidirectional natural fibers arranged in four fiber orientations (0°, 0o/90o ±45o, and quasi-isotropic), and their tensile, flexural, compression strength, thermal stability, and void content were measured following ASTM standards. The results revealed that adding nanofillers increased the tensile, flexural, and compressive strengths by 16 % (98.83 Mpa), 11 % (161.60 Mpa), and 23 % (114.62 Mpa), respectively. Similarly, at 0° orientation, the addition of nanoparticles enhances the tensile, bending, and compressive modulus by 30 % (15.43 Gpa), 12 % (13.52 Gpa), and 60 % (42.6 Gpa), respectively. On the other hand, the void content was reduced with the addition of nanofillers. The results also revealed that composites with crystalline nanosilica particle fillers had superior thermal stability compared to crystalline nanocellulose fibril fillers. The overall results of this research give the confidence that nano particle-filled natural fiber composites can be used for bio-based engineering applications, such as prosthetic sockets.

Fiber density can be used to estimate composite weight and to evaluate fiber content for property predictions in fiber-reinforced composites. Yet, natural fibers don’t have fixed density value given on datasheet and their density measurement is affected by various factors. This study compares various standard natural fiber’s density mearusing methods and identifies determinant factors to, then, estimate the density of Enset fibers by using the optimal combination. The advantages and disadvantages of five standard methods were compared considering the characteristics of natural fibers’ and methods’ effectiveness where Helium gas Pycnometry is selected afterward. Standard calibration sphere and synthetic fiber with known density is measured for validation. The study analyzed the impact of variables on result’s precision and accuracy. Then, Density of Enset fiber have been measured with varied factors including uniformity and duration purging, volume cell type and amount of fiber in a cell, and fiber size. The result showed that fluctuation is minimized, and accuracy and precision is enhanced for the larger volume cell, larger mass of fiber in a cell, smaller size fiber and longer uniform purging. Finally, measured density of Enset using the best combination of factors is 1.38 ± 0.01 g/cm3.

ABSTRACTA natural fiber-reinforced composite from a locally available false banana plant is developed for a prosthesis socket application. Four batches of composite samples are fabricated by arranging the longitudinal uniformly distributed unidirectional false banana fibers in four orientations (0°, 90°, ±45°, 0°/90o). The composites’ mechanical and physical properties, such as tensile strength, compression strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and the effect of chemical treatment on water absorption, are investigated. The results are compared with E-glass fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite. The false banana fiber-polymer composites with a 0° fiber orientation have a tensile strength of 86.81 MPa, less than 9% lower than E-glass-fiber composites (95.44 MPa), and an impact resistance of 6.25 J, 10% higher compared to the E-glass fiber polymer composites (5.70 J). In addition, the treated false banana fiber-polymer composite absorbed 70% less water than the untreated false banana fiber-polymer composite. It is observed that the fiber treatment has increased the polymer–fiber interaction and the interface strength of the false banana fiber-polymer composites.

ABSTRACTThe development of natural fibers in engineering applications requires an accurate measurement of their dimensional characteristics and mechanical properties. Fiber cross-sectional area (CSA) obtained from lateral dimensional measurements should consider the specific cross-sectional shape (CSS) of the fibers and their wide lengthwise variations. In this study, the dimensional measurements of water-retted and unretted sisal fibers were conducted by laser scanning microscopy (LSM) and calculation-based methods. Single fiber tensile tests were performed using the digital image correlation (DIC) method. Results show that the diameters of water-retted and unretted fibers measured by LSM were 233 ± 45 µm and 236 ± 42 µm, respectively. The diameters of water-retted and unretted fibers obtained by calculation were 192 ± 17 µm and 178 ± 20 µm, respectively. The tensile strengths of water-retted and unretted fibers were 679 ± 118 MPa and 718 ± 106 MPa, respectively. The strain at failure and elastic modulus of water-retted and unretted fibers were 2.0 ± 0.6% and 34 ± 8 GPa, as well as 1.5 ± 0.2% and 48 ± 6 GPa, respectively. Water retting seems to predominantly influence the strain at failure and elastic modulus of sisal fibers, as confirmed by the ANOVA analysis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a major medical and veterinary concern in the world. It is one of the significant diseases in livestock farming communities managed under extensive grazing system like Ethiopia. Domestic intermediate hosts are an important reservoir for the disease spread. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the occurrence and economic losses associated with CE in cattle slaughtered at Mekaneyesuse Municipality abattoir, South Gondor zone of Amhara Region, North West Ethiopia. Ante-mortem inspection, postmortem examinations of organs, hydatid cyst characterization and financial loss estimations were conducted. The study was conducted on 384 cattle. The involvement of different organs was as follows: lungs (46.09%), liver (45.22%), heart (6.09%), and kidneys (2.6%). Out of the total of 115 cysts observed, small cysts constituted 57.39%, medium-sized were 34.78%, and large cysts accounted for 7.83%. Of these 115 cysts, 53.9% were fertile which included both viable (29%) and non-viable (71%) cysts. Furthermore, 46.1% cysts were non fertile, 62.3% were sterile and 37.7% were calcified. Based on the origin of animal, the prevalence of hydatid cysts was recorded to be 31.25%, 24%, 22.05% and 14.25% in Tachgayent, Semada, Andabet and Estie district, respectively. Higher cyst occurrence was observed in animals with poor body condition (51.56%) followed by medium (13.7%) and good body condition scores (8.25%). The total annual economic loss due to the direct condemnation of organs and indirect losses were estimated to be 851,252.68 ETB ($16,061.06). This study revealed that CE is economically important disease at Mekaneyesuse, South Gondar Zone, Amhara Region, Northwest Ethiopia. A more comprehensive investigation is required on prevalence and genotyping of Echinococcus granulosus s.l. cysts is important also to identify and estimate the relative contribution of each species or genotype to the disease in this area. Moreover, efforts to enhance public awareness in the area should also be pursued.

Additive mixed friction stir welding can be an innovative and novel method for enhancing the friction stir welding process. Thus, this research aimed to investigate nano Al2O3 effects on the mechanical and microstructure of FSWed joints using Al alloys AA2024-T351/AA7075-T651. The experiments were performed based on response surface approach based CCD twenty run with varying three factors: tool rotational speed (A: 800–1,200 rpm), welding speed (B: 20–60 mm/min), tool plunge depth (C: 0.2–0.4 mm) and fixed volume percentages of Al2O3 nano-particles (8%). Mechanical performances such as tensile, yield, and hardness tests have been performed and microstructural properties have been analyzed through SEM and microscopy. The statistical analysis shows that the tensile strength can be significantly affected by rotational speed (A), welding speed (B), tool plunge depth (C), interaction (AB, BC, AC), and quadratic term A2, B2 in the FSW process; yield strength was influenced considerably by main, interaction, and quadratic terms; main factors and quadratic terms A2, B2 and C2 significantly influenced hardness values. The fracture test revealed that the joints with Al2O3-reinforced AA2024-T351/AA7075-T651 alloys were more ductile and less brittle. The optimal conditions for FSW, tool rotational at 1,146 rpm, weld speed at 60 mm/min, and 0.4 mm plunge depth were responsible for higher tensile strength of 169 MPa, yield strength of 145 MPa, and micro-hardness values of 89 HRB due to the uniform nano-particle dispersions and better material mixing.

Wood-plastic composites are relatively novel composite materials that consist of a blend of wood flour waste with high-density polyethylene and polypropylene plastic waste, designed for use in ceiling applications. Various samples were produced using different ratios from the total weight, including 20:80, 30:70, and 40:60, with sieve sizes of 0.425 mm, 1.18 mm, and 2 mm. The composites were created by melting plastics and sawdust at a temperature of 180 ^0 c utilizing the hot-press moldings technique employing diverse formulations. The properties of sample composites were analyzed experimentally based on ASTM standards to investigate water absorption levels as well as flexural strength, impact resistance hardness along with surface morphology via the design of experiments. This research study indicates that nine composite formulations consisting of HDPE and PP plastics combined with wood flour can produce favorable physio-mechanical properties. Among these various combination specimens tested in this study FS3/FC30N exhibited excellent physio-mechanical properties; including desirable values such as water absorption level at 5.5103%, flexural strength at 61.12 Mpa, impact resistance measuring 33.45 J cm ^−2 , and hardness rating up to 80 RHB. Thus it is highly recommended for use in chipboard ceiling panel applications due to its potential benefits.

Objective The study aimed to assess diet quality and associated factors among preparatory school students in Awi Zone, Ethiopia.Design A school-based cross-sectional study design was used in this study.Setting The study was carried out in Awi Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia.Participants A total of 834 preparatory school students participated in the study.Outcome measures Diet quality was the outcome variable, and it was computed using the dietary diversity score, food variety score and consumption of animal-source foods. Students with high dietary diversity scores, appropriate animal-source food consumption and adequate food variety scores were labelled as having good-quality diets. Data were collected using a pretested structured self-administered questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regressions were employed to analyse the data. Variables with p≤0.2 in the bivariate logistic regression analysis were included in the multivariable logistic regression model. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to determine the strength of the association. Statistical significance was determined at p value less than 0.05.Results Only 24.7% (95% CI: 21.7%, 27.7%) of preparatory school students had good-quality diets. Being female (adjusted OR (AOR)=2.88, 95% CI: 2.0, 4.1), residing in an urban setting (AOR=1.90, 95% CI: 1.1, 3.2), having an educated mother (AOR=1.78, 95% CI: 1.1, 2.7), having pocket money (AOR=1.83, 95% CI: 1.2, 2.6) and nutrition information (AOR=1.90, 95% CI: 1.2, 3.1), and family monthly income >8000 Ethiopian birrs (AOR=3.90, 95% CI: 2.2, 7.1) were factors significantly associated with having good-quality diet.Conclusion The majority of the preparatory school students had poor-quality diets. These findings highlight the necessity of nutrition education that considers the sociodemographic characteristics of the students and their families. Implementing income-generating interventions for low-income households was also recommended by the findings.

One of the drawbacks of natural fibers and their composites is their inherent hydrophilic nature. The effect of moisture on the mechanical properties of composites is irrefutable. This study deals with the hygroscopic characteristics of enset–PLA composites and their effect on the mechanical properties of the composites. To do this, injection-molded composite specimens with different fiber volume fractions, plasticizer ratios, fiber lengths, and fiber ages were considered. The specimens were exposed to distilled water, and the moisture absorption was monitored on a daily basis. Subsequently, the specimens were subjected to mechanical loading to determine the effect of moisture on their strength, stiffness, and strain at break strength. Lastly, the individual and joint effects of the considered factors were scrutinized using an optimal experimental design. The results of the study show that the maximum and minimum moisture uptakes were recorded for 25% and 15% fiber ratios, respectively. Due to the effect of moisture, the tensile and bending strength decreased by 11% and 5%, respectively, for the 15% fiber volume fraction and decreased by 16% and 13%, respectively, for the 25% fiber volume fraction. Increasing the amount of plasticizer increases the moisture resistance. The results indicate that Enset–PLA composites have competitive properties and stability when exposed to moisture.

Biocomposites are promising candidates for some engineering applications owing to the growing environmental and economic challenges to replace petrochemical-based polymers with biodegradable polymers. Herein, sisal fiber reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composite specimens were fabricated using an injection molding machine with and without plasticizer. The weight percentage (wt%) of the sisal fiber varied between 5% and 20%. The effect of the sisal fiber wt% on water absorption resistance and mechanical properties was investigated experimentally using water ageing, mechanical, and morphological studies. The results revealed that tensile and flexural specimens after water ageing exhibited lower tensile and flexural strengths with higher water absorption behavior at 20 wt% sisal fiber than 5 wt% sisal fiber, while the impact strength increased after water ageing. In addition, the sisal fiber/PLA composites exhibited higher water absorption behavior and lower strength and modulus at 20 wt% sisal fiber after water ageing. Moreover, the water absorption decreased with the incorporation of the plasticizer.

Burst strength is a significant property that determines all other properties of structures to perform under induced internal pressure. In this study, the burst strength of a spider web-formed fabric structure is experimentally investigated. The spider web form orientation is prepared using Embroidery machine. A spider web develops a self-stressing nature, which offers its excellent inelasticity and provides a mechanism for competent and economical means to harmonize the local and global induced stresses in their structure. The obtained results are compared with published works on different effects of fiber architectures. The burst test result on spider web form indicated a spider web form's potential candidacy to utilize it as a future fiber orientation technique to form an enhanced composite reinforcement. However, fiber orientation influences the fiber-reinforced composite's mechanical properties. Fiber orientation via spider web form has not yet been used as a reinforcing engineering composite product. Hence, conducting rigors experimental work on spider web form reinforced composite structures can be taken as a significant step to fill the research gap.

Availability of some form of energy is essential for human survival and social development. However, the way energy has been generated within the last century has brought forward the quest for generation of energy without polluting the environment, which is nowadays considered to be the biggest global challenge. The materials used for wind turbine blades can be classified under this challenge of polluting the environment. One of the materials expected to reduce this problem is natural fiber reinforced composite (FRC). Thus, the focus of this paper is to evaluate the potential of different natural FRC materials for small wind turbine blade application. Eleven different natural fibers reinforced composite in epoxy resin are studied. The modified Halphin-Tsai semi-empirical model has been used to compute the physical properties of the composites, since it has a good agreement with experimental results. Stress, deformation, and weight of wind turbine blade under different loadings are analyzed aimed to search for a fiber type that may extend the life span of the blade. Finally, flap wise, edge wise, longitudinal and torsional natural frequencies are computed numerically by using finite element method in Qblade software (QFEM) under different mode types and the effects are analysed. Upon comparing the results with a common composite material for wind turbine blade (E-glass/epoxy), it has been observed that the selected natural fiber composites have equivalent and better mechanical performance. The environmental friendliness of natural fibers, i.e. biodegradability, comes as a plus to their advantage as materials of wind turbine blades.

The challenge of enhancing cutting tool life has been dealt with by many research studies. However, this challenge seems endless with growing technological advancement which brings about incremental improvement in tool life. The objective of this review paper is focused at assessing filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition techniques applied on cutting tools and their effect on tool efficiency. The paper particularly picks filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition (FCVAD) among other well-identified methods of coating like the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc Deposition is the state of art in the coating technology finding wide application in the electronics industry and medical industry in addition to the machining industry, which is the concern of this review paper. This review is made in order to summarize and present the various techniques of FCVAD coatings and their applications, as investigated by various researches in the area.

The intent of this research is to develop new material from flax and false banana fiber hybrid reinforced polymer composite using polyester resin as a matrix to replace synthetic fiber-reinforced polymer composites for automotive interior bodies. The composite samples were fabricated based on the weight percentage of fibers/matrix and the orientation of the fibers that were combined with Taguchi’s experimental design using the hand layup fabrication process. And also, single flax and single false banana fiber-reinforced polymer composite was fabricated with the same composition and orientation alone. The composite was tested for tensile and flexural strength properties, and it had been discussed and specimens were prepared according to ASTM standards. As a result, false banana showed better flexural strength than false banana fiber-reinforced composite for tensile strength, whereas the hybrid composites of 25% of flax, 15% of false banana, and unidirectional orientation have shown the maximum tensile and flexural strength with a value of 113.4 MPa and 167.88 MPa, respectively.

The wind turbine blade is an important component for harnessing wind energy. It plays a vital role in wind turbine operation. In this work, a study was conducted to investigate the dynamic behavior of an optimal rotary wind turbine blade with a bond graph approach simulated with MATLAB/Simulink. The model is considered as a twisted Rayleigh beam which is made of several sections of the type SG6043 airfoil. This type of airfoil is suitable for low wind conditions, and each section is subjected to aerodynamic loads that are computed using the blade element momentum theory. The bond graph model was developed based on the law of conservation of mass and energy in the systems, and then the model was converted to the MATLAB/Simulink toolbox; results were validated with SG6043 airfoil data and real wind data collected from selected specific sites of Abomsa, Metehara, and Ziway areas in Ethiopia.

This study has endeavored to develop an Al2O3-filled natural fiber reinforced polymer composite which is intended to substitute the most widely used synthetic E-glass fiber material. To attain the desired objective of the work, 0, 5, 10, and 15 wt% Al2O3-filled chopped flax/unsaturated polyester resin composite have been developed by the conventional hand-lay-up method followed by a compression molding process. Consequently, characterization and mechanical property tests are conducted based on the ASTM standard. The results revealed that both tensile and impact strength properties of the base chopped flax/unsaturated polyester resin composite are all affected due to the inclusion and variation of the content of Al2O3 in 15 and 25 wt% fiber loading cases. It has been noticed that a 39.06% increase in the ultimate tensile strength of the composite in 25/UPR-5 composition has been gained. The effect of Al2O3 on the impact strength of the base composite has also been analyzed and a 45% increase has been observed in 15/UPR-10 composition. The findings also witnessed that the newly developed composite can be applied to make automotive parts such as mud guard and engine undercover.

Spider silk is an astonishingly tough biomaterial that consists almost entirely of large proteins. Studying the secrets behind the high strength nature of spider webs is very challenging due to their miniature size. In spite of their complex nature, researchers have always been inspired to mimic Nature for developing new products or enhancing the performance of existing technologies. Accordingly, the spider web can be taken as a model for optimal fiber orientation for composite materials to be used in critical structural applications. In this study an attempt is made to analyze the geometrical characteristics of the web construction building units such as spirals and radials. As a measurement tool, we have used a developed MATLAB algorithm code for measuring the node to node of rings and radials angle of orientation. Spider web image samples were collected randomly from an ecological niche with black background sample collection tools. The study shows that the radial angle of orientation is 12.7 degrees with 5 mm distance for the spirals’ mesh size. The extracted geometrical numeric values from the spider web show moderately skewed statistical data. The study sheds light on spider web utilization to develop an optimized fiber orientation reinforced composite structure for constructing, for instance, shell structures, pressure vessels and fuselage cones for the aviation industry.

The nutritional value of browse foliage from the Thorny Kalahari Dune Bush veld of South Africa is not characterized. Most of this browse species is rich in tannin, but still palatable, and is consumed by ruminants during the dry season, as well as having a role to play in mitigating enteric methane emission from ruminants. In this study, the rumen methane mitigation potential of 19 browse species foliage collected from the Thorny Kalahari Dune Bush veld, was analyzed in terms of chemical composition, in vitro fermentation, digestibility and methane production. In vitro gas and methane production and organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) were determined by using rumen fluid collected, strained and anaerobically prepared. A semi-automated system was used to measure gas production (GP) from each browse species by incubating 400 mg samples in a shaking incubator at 39 °C with or without inclusion of 400 mg of polyethylene glycol (PEG). Data for all the parameters collected were statistically analyzed using the SAS (9.0) general linear model (GLM) procedure, and differences between foliage species were determined using Duncan’s multiple-range test. Acacia luederitziiand Monechma incanumshowed the best potential for decreasing methane production by up to 90 % after 48 h of incubation. The secondary components (mainly tannins) of the browse species appeared to have a significant effect on volatile fatty acids (VFA), methane and gas production as judged by the comparison of samples incubated with or without PEG inclusion. The substantial amount of crude protein (CP) content coupled with their anti-methanogenic effect during fermentation would make these browses a potential mitigation option for small scale farmers and pastoralists in sub-Sahara Africa. However, it is also very important that systematic and strategic supplementation in a mixed diet should be looked at as the way forward in terms of best utilization.

In recent decades supplementation of animal feeds with exogenous fibrolytic enzymes has substantially improved digestibility and animal performance. However, information related to associated methane production is limited and inconsistent. This study evaluated the effect of cellulase and xylanase enzymes on in vitro methane production of Eragrostis curvula hay, maize (Zea mays) stover and a total mixed ration (TMR) at seven levels of the two enzymes. Feed samples were incubated for 2, 12, 24 and 48 h in an in vitro batch culture with buffer and rumen fluid, and fibrolytic enzymes. Gas production was measured using a pressure transducer connected to a data tracker, while methane gas was analysed using a gas chromatograph which was calibrated with standard CH4 and CO2. Increases in the level of enzyme application resulted in increases in gas volume, total volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, dry matter (DM) disappearance and associated increases in methane production. The linear increase in percentage and volume of methane production in tandem with increases in level of enzyme application might be due to increased fermentation, and organic matter degradability that resulted in a shift in VFA production towards acetate. Considering the efficiency of DM and neutral detergent fiber degradation and production of associated VFA with levels of enzymes, the use of 1 mg g−1 DM of enzyme can be a good option for the feeds tested. However, they cannot decrease methane production. It will be very important to consider other hydrogen sinks that can capture directly extra H+ produced by the addition of enzyme so that their supplementation could be very efficient and environmentally sound.

Introduction: Optimal complementary feeding practice is a child feeding practice that fulfills the minimum dietary diversity, the minimum meal frequency, continuing breastfeeding with complementary feeding, and initiation of complementary feeding from 6 to 8 months., Method: A community-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 732 randomly selected mothers having children 6 to 23 months of age from March 10 to April 21 /2021.Data were collected using a pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire. Data entry was performed by using Epi data version 3.1 and was exported to Stata version 14.1. Descriptive statistics were done. Multivariable Logistic regression was used to predict the role of independent variables on optimal complementary feeding. Findings with a p-value <0.05 at a 95% confidence interval (CI) were considered statistically significant in the final model., Result: The overall proportion of mothers with optimal complementary feeding practice was 18.1% (95% C I 15.3% - 21.0). Only 90 (25.1%, 95% CI = 20.6-29.7) of mothers were found to have optimal complementary feeding practice in NGO supported kebeles but only 37 (10.8%, 95% CI = 7.5-14.1) practiced optimal complementary feeding is not NGO-supported kebeles. Mothers from Kebeles with no NGO support were 46% (AOR = 0.54, 95% CI 0.31, 0.96) less likely to practice optimal complementary feeding. On the other hand, mothers of children aged20-23 months were four times (AOR = 4.47, 95% CI 2.02-9.91) more likely to practice optimal complementary feeding than mothers having children 6-8 months of age., Practice Implications: Different interventions have been implemented by governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve this condition in Dessie Zuria District. But, there is limited data on the extent to which intervention by governmental and non-governmental organizations reduces this improving condition. The aim of this study was to assess the Optimal Complementary Feeding Practice and Associated Factors among Mothers Having Children Aged 6-23 Months, Ethiopia 2021., Conclusion: Optimal complementary feeding practices among mothers in NGO-supported kebeles were higher than not supported kebeles. Background: We already know that incorporating information and Communication technology (ICT) into every aspect of human activity result in significant change and makes tasks easier to complete. It can help in areas of healthcare systems and medical education. Therefore, this study aimed to assess utilization ICT and its associated factors among Arba Minch University College Medicine and Health Science students., Methods: A cross sectional study design was conducted in June through August 2021 among under graduate students in college of medicine and health science at Arba Minch University, Ethiopia. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on the students' socio-demographic factors as well as the utilization ICT. The data entry form was prepared with Epi-data 3.1 versions software and STATA version 14 software was used to analyze the data., Results: A total of 355 participants enrolled in the study, with a response rate of 98.34%. The percentage of students who used ICT was 55.77% [95% CI, 0.50, 0.60]. Regarding of field of study, health informatics students (84%) used the most ICT, while midwifery students (52%) used the least. Urban resident [AOR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.08, 3.16], ICT knowledge [AOR = 3.8, 95% CI = 2.25, 6.40], having formal training of ICT [AOR = 1.9, 95% CI = 1.06,3.48], having IT in current course study [AOR = 2.2, 95% CI = 1.23, 3.84], and had good IT skill [AOR = 2.4, 95% CI = 1.34, 4.23] revealed a significant and positive correlation with the use of ICT., Conclusion: In the current study previous residence, ICT knowledge, having formal training, having IT in current courses, and IT skill were significantly associated with student ICT utilization. Therefore, the university should continue to invest in professional development in order to improve teaching and student performance, as well as provide the college with student-centered ICT computer labs to encourage students to use technology., (© 2022. Institutionalised forms of adult learning and education (ALE) such as community learning centres (CLCs) and related models are found in most parts of the world. These are spaces offering opportunities for literacy and skills training, health and citizenship, general, liberal and vocational education, in line with fuller recognition of the meaning of lifelong learning, and in the context of local communities. Often these institutions form the basis for even more informal and participatory learning, like study circles and community groups. They may share facilities like libraries and museums, clubs and sports centres, which are not within the remit of the Ministry of Education. This article reviews relevant literature and identifies recent studies and experiences with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific and Africa regions, but also considers insights related to interventions at the global level. Findings point to low levels of participation of adults in general, and more specifically so for vulnerable and excluded groups which can hardly cross respective barriers. The authors' discussion is guided by the question What conditions are conducive to having more and better ALE for lifelong learning - and which roles can CLCs and other community-based ALE institutions play? This discussion is timely - the authors argue that CLCs need to be given more attention in international commitments such as those made in the context of the International Conferences of Adult Education (CONFINTEA) and the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Background: Ethiopia accommodates the second largest number of human rabies deaths in Africa. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize and pool estimates of dog-mediated rabies status in Ethiopia., Methods: Published researches between 2010 and 2020 were comprehensively searched and the required information was extracted. The prevalence was estimated using the random-effects meta-analysis because higher heterogeneity between studies was expected., Results: The pooled estimate of rabies was 32% (95% CI: 19-46%), with individual study prevalence estimates ranged from 1 to 78%. Studies were approximately weighted equally with individual weight ranging from 5.19-5.28%. Subgroup analysis indicated that the random pooled prevalence of rabies was 28% (95% CI: 0-81%) in animals and 33% (95% CI: 20-47%) in humans. Furthermore, a subgroup analysis across regions indicated that the pooled prevalence was 78% in Addis Ababa, 46% in Oromia, 40% in Tigray and 5% in Amhara regional states. No single study was reported from the country's eastern and southern parts to be included in this meta-analysis., Conclusion: The estimated pooled rabies prevalence was found high and showed varying among study regions. Khat ( Catha edulis Forsk) is a plant consumed by many people in Eastern Africa, including Ethiopia, and Southern Arabia to be stimulated. There are several human and animal studies on khat that provide information about its toxic effects. However, the potential toxic effects of khat on embryos and fetuses have not been elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the embryotoxic and fetotoxic effects of khat exposure during the earliest period of gestation in rats. Pregnant Wistar albino rats were treated with khat extract at 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg doses from day 6 through day 12 of gestation. The treatment was delivered by gavage. Embryos and fetuses were recovered on gestational day 12 or day 20, respectively, and were quantitatively and qualitatively assessed for developmental anomalies. Placentae from the treatment and control groups were investigated for histopathological effects. Results of the present study showed that khat exposure during pregnancy had dose-dependent toxic effects in rat embryos and fetuses. Prenatal growth retardation such as reduced fetal weight and crown-rump length was observed in near-term fetuses, especially, in animals treated with the highest dose of khat ( p < 0.05). Growth retardation and developmental anomalies were also observed in day 12 embryos of khat-treated rats. Maternal weight gain of the khat-treated group was also significantly lower than the control group. Cytolysis, decidual hypoplasia, and atrophy were observed in the placenta of the khat-treated rats. Grain legumes play an important role as source of food and feed in smallholder mixed systems. They also contribute to soil fertility improvement through biological nitrogen fixation. Although rhizobium inoculation and phosphorus fertilizer are known to improve grain yield of legumes, information is limited on the effect of this practice on the yield and fodder quality of the haulm. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of rhizobium inoculation (I) and phosphorus fertilizer (P) on yield and nutritional quality of grains and haulms of grain legumes (faba bean, chickpea, common bean and soybean) on farm across diverse agroecological locations in the Ethiopian highlands. The crops were subjected to four treatments [+I, +P, -I + P and a negative control (-P-I)] at multiple locations on farm during the main cropping season in 2016. Yield data was recorded during grain harvesting, and subsequently representative samples of grains and haulms were collected and analyzed for quality variables. Effects of the treatments were significant (P < 0.05) with 30% increase on grain yield for all studied crops and 28% increase on haulm dry matter yield for faba bean, common bean and soybean. Crude protein (CP) and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) values of faba bean, common bean and soybean haulms were higher (P < 0.05); and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were lower (P < 0.05) for the treatments than the control. The haulm CP content and IVOMD of chickpea also responded positively (P < 0.05) to the treatments. The current results demonstrated the possibility of improving both yield and quality of grains and haulms of grain legumes with the application of efficient rhizobium inocula and P fertilization. This practice offers an opportunity for smallholders in the crop-livestock system to improve the food-feed traits of grain legumes with minimal input and environmental footprint.

Pancreatic cancer is detected late in the disease process and has an extremely poor prognosis. A blood-based biomarker that can enable early detection of disease, monitor response to treatment, and potentially allow for personalized treatment would be of great benefit. This review analyzes the literature regarding two potential biomarkers, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cell-free DNA (cfDNA), with regard to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. The origin of CTCs and the methods of detection are discussed and a decade of research examining CTCs in pancreatic cancer is summarized, including both levels of CTCs and analyzing their molecular characteristics and how they may affect survival in both advanced and early disease and allow for treatment monitoring. The origin of cfDNA is discussed, and the literature over the past 15 years is summarized. This includes analyzing cfDNA for genetic mutations and methylation abnormalities, which have the potential to be used for the detection and prognosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Background: Opportunistic diseases cause morbidity and mortality among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected persons. There is dearth of evidence on the magnitude and predictors of opportunistic diseases among PLHIV in Ethiopia. This study was conducted to determine the magnitude and predictors of opportunistic diseases among adults enrolled in the national HIV/AIDS care and treatment services and generate information for program planning and medicine quantification in the country., Methods: A health facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Probability proportional to size and random sampling methods were employed to select health facilities and medical records of adult HIV-infected patients respectively. A total of 7826 medical records were reviewed from 60 health facilities nationwide. Socio-demographic and clinical data including diagnosis of opportunistic diseases were collected from the medical records. Period prevalence of opportunistic diseases over one year period was determined. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to measure associations between independent variables and the dependent variable, occurrence of opportunistic diseases., Results: Of the total of 7826 study participants, 3748 (47.9%) were from hospitals and 4078 were from health centers. The majority (61.8%) were female. The median age was 32 years with interquartile range (IQR) of 27-40. The median duration of stay in HIV care was 56 (IQR = 28-80) months; 7429 (94.9%) were on antiretroviral treatment. A total of 1665 cases of opportunistic diseases were recorded with an overall prevalence estimated at 21.3% (95% confidence interval (CI): 20.36, 22.18%). Skin diseases (4.1%), diarrhea (4.1%), bacterial pneumonia (3.6%), recurrent upper respiratory tract infections (3.1%) and tuberculosis (2.7%) were the leading opportunistic diseases. Isoniazid preventive therapy coverage among eligible patients was 24.8%. Persons with a CD4 count < 200 cells/mm 3 [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.80, 95% CI: 1.45, 2.23]; and who were bed ridden or ambulatory functional status [AOR (95% CI) = 3.19 (2.32, 4.39)] were independent predictors of diagnosis of opportunistic diseases., Conclusion: Opportunistic diseases were found to be pervasive among HIV infected adults in Ethiopia. Proactive identification and management, and prevention of opportunistic diseases should be strengthened especially among females, ambulatory or bed-ridden, and patients with low CD4 cell count.

Background: Unsafe abortion remains a significant contributor of maternal morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia and other developing countries. Involvement of community based health workers, health extension workers (HEWs) in Ethiopia, is a vital step in increasing access and utilization of medical abortion and related services. In order to engage HEWs, it is important to understand the attitude of women and service providers., Objective: To explore the acceptability of involvement of HEWs in medical abortion by women who seek services, by abortion service providers, and assess willingness and confidence of HEWs., Methods: An exploratory in-depth interview was conducted at three purposively selected health facilities in Ethiopia; namely Marie Stopes International (MSI) Adama clinic, MSI Asella clinic and Adama Government Health Centre from July-August, 2013. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysis was done using Atlas ti software. Themes were abstracted from coded text segments. The findings are presented using quotations, Atlas ti networks and queries., Results: Thirty eight (26 eligibility, 12 follow up) women participated in the study and 9 HEWs and 7 service providers were interviewed. Almost all of the interviewed women, service providers and HEWs accepted HEWs involvement in medical abortion services. The HEWs expressed readiness and confidence. Concerns related to the involvement of HEWs included confidentiality, privacy, over dependence on abortion rather than preventing unwanted pregnancy, quality and poor referral system., Conclusions: Expansion of medical abortion services by involving HEWs can contribute to the reduction of abortion related morbidity and mortality. Concerns of the study population should be addressed by training HEWs for medical abortion, creating better awareness and advocacy among women and communities, addressing quality and referral issues with proper planning, implementing and monitoring of activities.
