5. Upending the New Deal Regulatory Regime: Democratic Party Position Change on Financial Regulation.

Abstract

Why did congressional Democrats upend the financial regulatory regime they had maintained since the New Deal? I argue that the congressional reforms of the mid-1970s paved the way for the Democratic Party's turn against financial regulation. Prior to congressional reform, Democrats in Congress were especially parochial, and Southern populists dominated the House and Senate banking committees. These parochial and populist orientations complemented the radically decentralized banking system by New Deal financial regulations. The elimination of the seniority rule and other reforms reduced parochialism and strengthened Democratic leadership, enabling the party to enact deregulatory reforms that provided (short-term, at least) benefits to the diffuse interests of American savers and consumers at the expense of entrenched local industry groups. In the long run, however, these deregulatory reforms significantly accelerated the concentration of economic power held by the nation's largest firms and wealthiest individuals. 11. Benchmarking the key determinants for successful business growth within manufacturing

Abstract

Manufacturing companies based in high labour-cost economies must have a well defined strategy to develop and maintain core competencies in process capability, continuous improvement and manufacturing best practice to ensure sustainability of the business unit. This research was undertaken to determine the key enablers of sustained business growth and use this knowledge to contribute to the body of knowledge around use of business improvement techniques within a manufacturing improvement strategy. Auditing and performance measurement techniques have been used in this research to assess the growth and sustainability characteristics in two cases, who have successfully applied very different approaches to achieve business growth. By reviewing existing assessment processes, and the audit output from these two case studies, this research demonstrates the strengths and shortcomings of the available practices, in particular the Quickscan tool selected for this research. Methodological improvements are then proposed, to focus on aligning business improvement activities with the identified gaps between current performance and customer requirements. The new approach provides a capability to assess a complex supply chain system against the determinants of competitive advantage, hence achieve sustained company growth. This study directly contributes to the body of knowledge around supply chain auditing and benchmarking, by focussing on novel aspects of customer demand and feedback to improve the accuracy of the audit recommendations. This contribution is novel both in terms of the ten critical success factors, and also the resulting methodological improvement. It overcomes weaknesses in existing business maturity models which seek to standardise performance of a value chain rather than provide competitive advantage through effectiveness of the complex supply chain.

Abstract

A series of exact analytical solutions is developed for a capsule with two parachutes to verify CAPDYN and FAST results for terminal conditions. The case described herein is for the capsule and two parachutes acting as a fixed system in terminal descent. In this simplest case, the density is modeled as a constant defined by the initial release altitude. The analytical solution predicts the system terminal dynamic pressure, velocity, and altitude for comparison with CAPDYN and FAST simulation results.

17. Modal Analysis of a Two-Parachute System

Abstract

The Orion capsule is designed to land under a nominal configuration of three main parachutes; however, the system is required to be fault tolerant and land successfully if one of the main parachutes fails to open. The Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) Team performed a series of drop tests in order to characterize the performance of the system with two main parachutes. During the series of drop tests, several distinct dynamical modes were observed. The most consequential of these is the pendulum mode. Three other modes are benign: flyout (scissors), maypole, and breathing. The actual multi-body system is nonlinear, flexible, and possesses significant cross-coupling. Rather than perform analysis of this highly complex system directly, we conduct analysis of each dynamical mode observed during flight, based on first principles. This approach is analogous to traditional aircraft flight dynamics analysis in which the full nonlinear behavior of the airframe is decomposed into longitudinal dynamics (phugoid and short-period modes) and lateral dynamics (spiral, roll-subsidence, and dutch-roll modes). This analysis is intended to supplement multi-body nonlinear simulations in order to provide further insight into the system.

18. Linear Analysis of a Two-Parachute System Undergoing Pendulum Motion

Abstract

Motion resembling that of a pendulum undergoing large-amplitude oscillation was ob- served during a series of flight tests of an unoccupied Orion Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) drop-test vehicle. Large excursions away from vertical by the capsule could cause it to strike the ground or ocean at a large angle with respect to vertical, with an undesirable attitude with respect to heading, or with a large horizontal or vertical speed. These conditions are to be avoided because they would endanger the occupants of the capsule in an actual mission. Pendulum motion is intimately related to a parachute’s aerodynamic normal force coefficient, which is a nonlinear function of angle of attack. An analytical investigation of the dynamics of pendulum motion is undertaken with the aid of a simplified model of the physical system and the assumption that the normal force coefficient is a linear function of angle of attack in the neighborhood of a value corresponding to stable equilibrium. The analysis leads to a simple relationship for the location of a pivot point, which provides insights that are consistent with previous studies.

Abstract

Background: Louisiana is historically one of the lowest-performing states in terms of health outcomes in the United States. Hurricane Katrina led to a decrease in available health care resources, with a larger impact on resources for those living below the poverty line. Subsequently, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been shown to have had disproportionately large impacts on minority communities, uninsured populations, and rural communities—all of which are found in Louisiana. Methods: This review focuses on the unique challenges of health care in Louisiana, the influence of COVID-19 on physician burnout, and methods of reducing work exhaustion for those in the health care field. Results: A national survey showed that physician satisfaction decreased from June 29, 2021, through September 26, 2021, compared to before the pandemic. A critical component in the provision of the essential services of public health is the ability to build and sustain a clinically skilled and diverse physician workforce. Maintaining well-being and retaining the physician workforce are prerequisites to the equitable provision of access to health care services. Conclusion: Maintaining one’s own wellness is critical to occupational sustainability, particularly when unique stressors such as those encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic are present. The future of a vital health care system depends on physicians maintaining healthy habits and seeking help when burnout symptoms are recognized, both at the individual and institutional level. 23. The primary threat: How the surge of ideological challengers is exacerbating partisan polarization.

Abstract

Despite widespread speculation among pundits and politicians, statistical research finds little evidence that primaries are an important source of polarization in roll call voting. This manuscript moves beyond roll call votes by testing the effects of ideological primary challenges on partisanship in bill co-sponsorship in Congress. Moreover, while extant research generally focuses on the one-to-one effects of primary challenges on the incumbents who experience a challenge, I measure and test the effects of the mere threat of a primary challenge from the ideological extreme. I find that the increased threat of an ideological primary challenge accounts for about one-fourth of the rise in partisanship that occurred from the 1980s to the 2010s. These findings suggest the recent wave of ideological primary challenges is an important source of the escalation and intensification of polarization in recent Congresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the event this is not possible, patients must be taken to the operating theatre urgently and anaesthetised both to provide analgesia and also commence extrication of the ischaemic limb in a time-critical injury.
