1. Context-Dependent Social Comparison and Imposter Phenomenon: An Experimental Vignette Approach

Abstract

Recent research into imposter phenomenon, or internal feelings of questioning competence, has shifted away from conceptualizing the feeling as an individual characteristic that requires an individual solution toward instead examining the role of context. We used a 2 (Generational Status: First Generation vs. Continuing Generation) × 3 (Environment: Classroom vs. Peer vs. Administration) × 2 (Social Comparison: Present vs. Absent) experimental vignette design. Overall, we found that, for both first- and continuing-generation students, social comparison messages differentially impacted imposter feelings depending on context, with the most elevated levels in social comparison messages from administrators and peers. Findings contribute to a better understanding of structural conditions that exacerbate or lessen imposter feelings at highly selective post-secondary institutions.

The primary purpose of this guidebook is to support a learning community that promotes the growth, quality, and sustainability of Community Schools across Wisconsin. This document provides an overview of Community School models and supports, including: a list of the current districts implementing Community Schools in Wisconsin; information on how to connect with others who are doing this work across the state; a summary of Community Schools policy examples and opportunities; funding available for Community Schools; and tips on how to get started, or, for those already implementing the Community Schools model, to learn and improve. This guidebook is intended for district and school leaders who are in earlier stages of Community Schools planning as well as those in implementation stages. In addition, advocates for Community Schools and policy can use this guidebook to get a better sense of the landscape of Community Schools in Wisconsin.

Abstract

Daley et al. (2023a) argue that at least 10–15 years apart Digital Elevation Model (DEM) derived DEMs of Difference (DoD) surveys are needed to detect reliable geomorphic change within the gullied landscapes of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. We acknowledge that the reliability of observed geomorphic change increases as more subtle geomorphic processes are detected with longer monitoring periods. As further good quality long-term legacy datasets become available, we encourage utilising these to improve confidence in targeting erosion rehabilitation. However, our approach to consistently apply 2–3 year DoDs to contrasting gully morphologies enabled capture of more intense geomorphic processes acting over shorter timeframes and provided valuable and timely information on (i) contrasting erosional mechanisms and erosion rates between variable gully morphologies, and (ii) rehabilitation efforts undertaken. In this paper, we take the opportunity to concisely address all the concerns raised by Daley et al. (2023a).

Abstract

Abstract Visual perception of X-radiation is a well-documented, but poorly understood phenomenon. Scotopic rod cells and rhodopsin have been implicated in visual responses to X-rays, however, some evidence suggests that X-rays excite the retina via a different mechanism than visible light. While rhodopsin’s role in X-ray perception is unclear, the possibility that it could function as an X-ray receptor has led to speculation that it could act as a transgenically expressed X-ray receptor. If so, it could be used to transduce transcranial X-ray signals and control the activity of genetically targeted populations of neurons in a less invasive version of optogenetics, X-genetics. Here we investigate whether human rhodopsin (hRho) is capable of transducing X-ray signals when expressed outside of the retinal environment. We use a live-cell cAMP GloSensor luminescence assay to measure cAMP decreases in hRho-expressing HEK293 cells in response to visible light and X-ray stimulation. We show that cAMP GloSensor luminescence decreases are not observed in hRho-expressing HEK293 cells in response to X-ray stimulation, despite the presence of robust responses to visible light. Additionally, irradiation had no significant effect on cAMP GloSensor responses to subsequent visible light stimulation. These results suggest that ectopically expressed rhodopsin does not function as an X-ray receptor and is not capable of transducing transcranial X-ray signals into neural activity for X-ray mediated, genetically targeted neuromodulation.

12. Embedding Wellbeing in Career Development Practice: Trialling a New Structure for Guidance Conversations in Scotland and Wales

Abstract

Research has established powerful relationships between career guidance, work, and wellbeing. However, some practitioners have only low or moderate confidence in using guidance to support wellbeing. Catalysed by COVID-19, this practitioner-researcher collaboration explored the question: how can we embed wellbeing more explicitly into guidance practice? Concerns and potential solutions were examined with 36 career development practitioners, service managers, and researchers from Canada, England, Scotland, and Wales. This article presents the results of a subsequent pilot in Scotland and Wales to test the resulting initial guidance interview framework. Quantitative evaluations, supported by four case examples, show customer wellbeing progress during initial guidance interviews and gains in practitioner confidence following training.

Abstract

This policy brief, produced by the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of the Region 10 Comprehensive Center, is one in a series examining selected topics related to Wisconsin's educator workforce. The goal of this brief is to summarize key trends in the use of emergency credentials within Wisconsin's public schools in recent years, which is a topic of interest for at least two reasons. A first reason is that increased reliance by Wisconsin school districts on emergency credentials as a strategy for filling vacant positions would serve as a meaningful indicator that widely-reported shortages of educators are worsening. A second policy implication associated with emergency credentials is a potential equity issue. To the extent that emergency credentials are being used by some districts and schools more than others, particularly for teaching positions and by districts and schools with higher shares of traditionally marginalized students, state and local policymakers should question whether additional supports and resources may be necessary to ensure that all students have access to highly-qualified educators.

Abstract

Abstract Background The phenolic polymer lignin is one of the primary chemical constituents of the plant secondary cell wall. Due to the inherent plasticity of lignin biosynthesis, several phenolic monomers have been shown to be incorporated into the polymer, as long as the monomer can undergo radicalization so it can participate in coupling reactions. In this study, we significantly enhance the level of incorporation of monolignol ferulate conjugates into the lignin polymer to improve the digestibility of lignocellulosic biomass. Results Overexpression of a rice Feruloyl-CoA Monolignol Transferase (FMT), OsFMT1, in hybrid poplar (Populus alba x grandidentata) produced transgenic trees clearly displaying increased cell wall-bound ester-linked ferulate, p-hydroxybenzoate, and p-coumarate, all of which are in the lignin cell wall fraction, as shown by NMR and DFRC. We also demonstrate the use of a novel UV–Vis spectroscopic technique to rapidly screen plants for the presence of both ferulate and p-hydroxybenzoate esters. Lastly we show, via saccharification assays, that the OsFMT1 transgenic p oplars have significantly improved processing efficiency compared to wild-type and Angelica sinensis-FMT-expressing poplars. Conclusions The findings demonstrate that OsFMT1 has a broad substrate specificity and a higher catalytic efficiency compared to the previously published FMT from Angelica sinensis (AsFMT). Importantly, enhanced wood processability makes OsFMT1 a promising gene to optimize the composition of lignocellulosic biomass.

21. 'Rising Number of Homeless Is the Legacy of Tory Failure': Discoursal Changes and Transitivity Patterns in the Representation of Homelessness in 'The Guardian' and 'Daily Mail' from 2000 to 2018

Abstract

Experts in different fields have claimed that the UK has experienced a process of growing economic inequality since the 1970s. Following Fairclough's dialectal-relational approach, this paper presents a detailed, systematic analysis of the representation of homeless people and homelessness in "The Guardian" and "Daily Mail" from 2000 to 2018, in order to explore how these have been discursively represented over time. Therefore, our study addresses two specific research questions: How have homelessness and homeless people been represented in the UK press? Are there any discoursal changes in representation with the passing of time? The analysis, which has employed mostly qualitative but also quantitative (statistical) methods drawing on corpus-assisted discourse analysis, is informed by the theory of TRANSITIVITY within Systemic Functional Linguistics. Results indicate that, within an overall negative representation of homeless people and homelessness in this period, there have been some significant discoursal changes over time. As such, this paper contributes to critical discourse studies and transitivity research on a relevant social problem, that of growing economic inequality in the UK.

22. Distinct Patterns of GABAergic Interneuron Pathology in Autism Are Associated with Intellectual Impairment and Stereotypic Behaviors

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication and repetitive behaviors. How specific anatomical alterations contribute to the clinical profile of autism spectrum disorder remains largely uncharacterized. We have previously shown that parvalbumin-positive Chandelier cells, a specific type of GABAergic interneuron, are reduced in number in the autism spectrum disorder prefrontal cortex. Here, we assessed the relationship between interneuron pathology with autism spectrum disorder symptom severity and comorbidity. We collected clinical records from autism (n = 20) and control (n = 19) brain donors, from whom we previously characterized GABAergic interneuron pathology in three regions of the prefrontal cortex (BA9, 46, and 47). We assessed the relationship between the severity of core symptoms, as indicated by Autism Diagnostic Interview--Revised scores, and Chandelier cell pathology in autism spectrum disorder, and also differences in interneuron pathology associated with autism spectrum disorder comorbidities. Total GABAergic interneuron number was significantly reduced in autism spectrum disorder cases with intellectual disability in the prefrontal cortex (PFC )--by 36.6% relative to autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability and by 38.7% relative to neurotypical controls. The severity of autism spectrum disorder motor stereotypies was correlated with the severity of Chandelier cell loss in BA47, as indicated by reductions in parvalbumin[superscript +] interneurons and GABA transporter 1[superscript +] cartridges. Chandelier cell loss is associated with the core autism spectrum disorder symptom domain of restricted repetitive behaviors and likely plays a role in stereotypic motor mannerisms. Intellectual impairment in autism spectrum disorder reflects a more severe form of a common underlying neuropathology-cortical GABAergic interneuron loss.

23. Optimizing Voltage for Effective X-ray Computed Tomography Scan: A Study on Varied Soil Bulk Densities and Container Sizes

Abstract

Numerous studies have highlighted the role of X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) in understanding root architecture. Nevertheless, setting definitive scanning parameters for diverse soils in varied container sizes remains challenging. This study investigates the influence of X-ray CT system voltage on the penetration capability in diverse soils and container sizes, focusing on two key parameters: (1) gray values, which indicate X-ray attenuation and contribute to image contrast, and (2) signal-to-noise ratio, a measure of image clarity. Five soil samples were collected from various depths within a soil profile to encompass bulk density values ranging from 1.34 to 1.84 g·cm−3 to conduct the experiment. Containers with dimensions of 6 × 6 × 6 cm³, 8 × 8 × 6 cm³, 10 × 10 × 6 cm³, 12 × 12 × 6 cm³, 14 × 14 × 6 cm³, and 16 × 16 × 6 cm³ were used. Voltage levels spanning 75 to 225 kV, in 25-kV increments, were applied to each sample. The observed gray values of the X-ray images were fitted using a logistic model of three parameters. Results showed that increasing voltage leads to enhanced penetration up to a plateau point, irrespective of soil density or container size. This plateau could potentially yield higher quality scans, given that lower voltages result in subdued gray values and reduced image contrast. Notably, it was observed that soil properties, including mineral composition, directly affect image gray values. This study established optimal voltage settings for specific soil types at fixed densities, offering valuable insights for researchers investigating soil–root interactions. Although the current findings are based on five soils, a more extensive sampling encompassing diverse soil textures and densities is necessary for a comprehensive understanding of X-ray penetration behavior across various soil types.

24. Examining the value of mental health awareness training for soccer coaching license candidates

Abstract

Many coaches encounter athletes and/or staff members with mental health concerns. Recognizing and referring individuals to support resources is vital for providing necessary assistance. Awareness and recognition of mental health issues enable coaches to create an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can perform their best. This article examines the experiences of participants in U.S. Soccer's Coaching License Courses to understand the frequency they have experienced supporting athletes or staff with mental health challenges and their exposure, interest, perceived value to training in mental health awareness. This observational, cross-sectional study involved a survey following a free mental health awareness presentation. The results of this study showed: (a) a high prevalence of participants have supported athletes or staff in their environment with challenges related to their mental health (82.19 %); (b) a majority of participants had no previous training in recognition or management of mental health related issues (56.65 %); (c) a majority of participants worked with youth athletes (60.16 %); and (d) nearly all participants felt that there was value in having training in mental health for their role as a coach or administrator (98.71 %). In conclusion, coaches and administrators in soccer desire more mental health awareness training. The prevalence to which they have supported individuals with mental health challenges emphasizes the continued need for training and access to mental health resources. Additionally, incorporating training and awareness into all coaching license levels should be prioritized, making it a requirement to comprehensively support athletes and staff both on and off the field.

Abstract

Background: A philosophical shift in statistics regarding emphasis on "New Statistics" (NS; Cumming, G. (2014). The new statistics: Why and how. Psychological Science, 25(1), 7-29.) over conventional null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) raises the question of appropriate material coverage in undergraduate statistics courses. Objective: We examined current practices in statistics pedagogy at the graduate and undergraduate levels for both NS and NHST. Method: Using an online survey of a nationwide sample of current graduate students (n = 452) and graduate faculty (n = 162), we examined statistics pedagogy and perceptions of best approaches for teaching undergraduate statistics. Results: In undergraduate statistics courses, coverage of NS material involves modest instruction in effect sizes and confidence intervals, while NHST remains dominant. Graduate courses have more balanced coverage. Effect size estimation was regarded as the most important NS knowledge for success in graduate school and the topic most in need of increased undergraduate coverage. Conclusion: Undergraduate statistics courses could increase NS coverage, particularly effect size estimation, to better align with and prepare students for graduate work. Teaching Implications: This research summarizes graduate program expectations and graduate student experiences regarding undergraduate statistics that current instructors can use to shape the content of their classes.

32. Assessing gully erosion and rehabilitation using multi temporal LiDAR DEMs: Case study from the Great Barrier Reef catchments, Australia

Abstract

Millions of dollars are being spent on gully rehabilitation to help reduce excess fine sediment delivery to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). There is an urgent need for (i) prioritisation of active gullies for rehabilitation and (ii) the development of methodologies to inform the effectiveness of remediation. In this study we analyse DEMs of Difference derived from 0.5 m resolution 2–3 year interval multi-temporal LiDAR data collected pre and post rehabilitation at three variable gully morphologies in the Burdekin catchment. Our analysis indicates that the highest annual average fine sediment erosion rates for the untreated control gullies occur at the linear gully (53.38 t ha−1 y−1) followed by linear-alluvial gully (34.24 t ha−1 y−1) and least at the alluvial gully (14.41 t ha−1 y−1). The proportional loss or export of fine sediment from the gullies in their un-treated condition ranges from ∼68 to 90% of what is eroded, and when the gullies are treated the proportion of fine sediment that is retained in the gully proportional to what is eroded increases to ∼60% at all sites. Without pre-treatment baseline erosion rates, and additional post treatment LiDAR captures, it is difficult to quantify the treatment effectiveness. Our results offer insights in the erosion mechanisms within different geomorphic gully morphologies and rehabilitation effects in these erosional landforms. This study provides crucial knowledge of gully dynamics that can be coupled with other lines of evidence for better prioritisation of rehabilitation in the GBR catchments.

Abstract Coral reef biodiversity is maintained by a complex network of nutrient recycling among organisms. Sponges assimilate nutrients produced by other organisms like coral and algae, releasing them as particulate and dissolved matter, but to date, only a single trophic link between sponge-derived dissolved matter and a macroalgae has been identified. We sought to determine if sponge-coral nutrient exchange is reciprocal using a stable isotope ‘pulse-chase’ experiment to trace the uptake of 13C and 15N sponge-derived matter by the coral holobiont for three coral species (Acropora cervicornis, Orbicella faveolata, and Eunicea flexuosa). Coral holobionts incorporated 2.3–26.8x more 15N than 13C from sponge-derived matter and A. cervicornis incorporated more of both C and N than the other corals. Differential isotopic incorporation among coral species aligns with their ecophysiological characteristics (e.g., morphology, Symbiodiniaceae density). Our results elucidate a recycling pathway on coral reefs that has implications for improving coral aquaculture and management approaches.

Background Bereavement care can help individuals adjust to the death of a loved one, reducing immediate distress and long-term morbidity. Bereavement resources that provide psychoeducation, and practical and legal information requirements are key aspects of bereavement care.Aims This research aimed to review the understandability, actionability, readability and cultural appropriateness of resources currently provided to bereaved individuals within an Australian healthcare setting.Methods Resources were evaluated to assess (i) understandability and actionability using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT), (ii) readability using the Sydney Health Literacy Lab editor, (iii) cultural inclusivity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and (iv) accessibility for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.Results Thirty print resources were identified and assessed. The materials included information on grief (n = 12), bereavement resource lists (n = 8), practical guides (n = 7), bereavement pack introductions (n = 2), and a Memorial Day invitation. The mean PEMAT score for understandability was 61.5% (range 46–80%) and actionability was 35% (range 0–80%). The mean readability score was grade 10.7, above the recommended grade 8. Four resources scored 1 out of 7 for relevancy to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, indicating little to no relevancy. Nine resources contained information aimed at culturally and linguistically diverse populations, but inclusivity was minimal.Discussion Our review highlighted current bereavement resources require a high level of literacy and are not inclusive for diverse populations. Attention to health literacy principles and cultural inclusivity is required to ensure the needs of all bereaved are met.

Abstract

Cryogenic opto-electronic interconnects are gaining increasing interest as a means to control and readout cryogenic electronic components. The challenge is to achieve sufficient signal integrity with low heat load processing. In this context, we demonstrate the opto-electronic bias and readout of a commercial four-pixel superconducting nanowire single-photon detector array using a cryogenic photodiode and laser. We show that this approach has a similar system detection efficiency to a conventional bias. Furthermore, multi-pixel detection events are faithfully converted between the optical and electrical domains, which allows reliable extraction of amplitude multiplexed photon statistics. Our device has a latent heat load of 2.6 mW, maintains a signal rise time of 3 ns, and operates in free-running (self-resetting) mode at a repetition rate of 600 kHz. This demonstrates the potential of high-bandwidth, low noise, and low heat load opto-electronic interconnects for scalable cryogenic signal processing and transmission.

Topics discussed include the impact of influential Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) leaders, the establishment of DEI and social justice-focused membership communities, and specific initiatives led by various working groups and committees which have served to strengthen MLA’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion during the last three decades.

Abstract. Introduction:. Movement-evoked pain (MEP) impacts a substantial proportion of US adults living with chronic pain. Evidence suggests that MEP is influenced by numerous biopsychosocial factors and mediated by mechanisms differing from those of spontaneous pain. However, both characteristic and mechanistic knowledge of MEP remain limited, hindering effective diagnosis and treatment. Objectives:. We asked (1) can chronic pain, functional, psychosocial, and behavioral measures be grouped into descriptive domains that characterize MEP? and (2) what relationships exist between biopsychosocial factors across multiple domains of MEP? Methods:. We formed 6 characteristic domains from 46 MEP-related variables in a secondary analysis of data from 178 individuals (aged 45–85 years) with knee pain. Ratings of pain during 3 functional activities (ie, Balance, Walking, Chair Stand) were used as primary MEP variables. Pearson correlations were calculated to show linear relationships between all individual domain variables. Relationships between variables were further investigated through weighted correlation network analysis. Results:. We observed a unique combination of pain characteristics associated with MEP apart from general pain. Notably, minutes doing physical activity were inversely associated with multiple variables within 4 of the 6 domains. Weighted correlation network analysis largely supported our classification of MEP domains. Additional interdomain relationships were observed, with the strongest existing between MEP, Mechanical Pain, and Multiple Pain Characteristics and Symptoms. Additional relationships were observed both within and between other domains of the network. Conclusion:. Our analyses bolster fundamental understanding of MEP by identifying relevant mechanistic domains and elucidating biopsychosocial and interdomain relationships.

Contexte: Au Canada, plus de 2 millions de personnes vivent avec l'osteoporose, une maladie qui accroTt le risque de fracture, ce qui fait augmenter la morbidite et la mortalite, et entraTne une perte de qualite de vie et d'autonomie. La presente actualisation des lignes directrices vise a accompagner les professionnelles et professionnels de la sante au Canada dans la prestation de soins visant a optimiser la sante osseuse et a prevenir les fractures chez les femmes menopausees et les hommes de 50 ans et plus. Methodes: Le present document fournit une actualisation des lignes directrices de pratique clinique de 2010 d'Osteoporose Canada sur le diagnostic et la prise en charge de l'osteoporose au pays. Nous avons utilise l'approche GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) et effectue l'assurance de la qualite conformement aux normes de qualite et de presentation des rapports de la grille AGREE II (Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation). Les medecins de premier recours et les patientes et patients partenaires ont ete representes a tous les niveaux des comites et des groupes ayant participe a l'elaboration des lignes directrices, et ont participe a toutes les etapes du processus pour garantir la pertinence des informations pour les futurs utilisateurs et utilisatrices. Le processus de gestion des interets concurrents a ete entame avant l'elaboration des lignes directrices et s'est poursuivi sur toute sa duree, selon les principes du Reseau international en matiere de lignes directrices. Dans la formulation des recommandations, nous avons tenu compte des avantages et des risques, des valeurs et preferences de la patientele, des ressources, de l'equite, de l'acceptabilite et de la faisabilite; la force de chacune des recommandations a ete determinee en fonction du cadre GRADE. Recommandations: Les 25 recommandations et les 10 enonces de bonne pratique sont repartis en sections: activite physique, alimentation, evaluation du risque de fracture, instauration du traitement, interventions pharmacologiques, duree et sequence du traitement, et monitorage. La prise en charge de l'osteoporose devrait se fonder sur le risque de fracture, etabli au moyen d'une evaluation clinique realisee avec un outil d'evaluation du risque de fracture valide. 45. Selected Knowledge Base on Remote Learning Support for English Learners

Abstract

This document summarizes a review of research, evaluation, resources, and stakeholder knowledge related to the topic of remote support for English Learners. Databases used for conducting this review included Google Scholar, ERIC, and JSTOR. Search terms used include but are not limited to "remote learning support English learners"; "English language learners" AND "remote education". However, searches within these databases returned limited applicable resources. Many of the peer-reviewed articles found within these search parameters returned results mostly applicable to adult learners. It seems as though much of this research for K-12 learners will be forthcoming. Thus, for purposes of this review, resources were included from trusted organizations. These resources were found through Google searches using phrases such as "EL students remote learning support" and "EL student support COVID-19". These resources provide information pertinent to the current COVID-19 situation, information which is seemingly not yet widely available in peer-reviewed journals. Findings have been separated into two tables: one includes links to online resources and one includes peer-reviewed articles. Despite the difference in resource type, findings across resources share common themes to consider.
