Cotton fiber quality is a persistent concern that determines planting benefits and the quality of finished textile products. However, the limitations of measurement instruments have hindered the accurate evaluation of some important fiber characteristics such as fiber maturity, fineness, and neps, which in turn has impeded the genetic improvement and industrial utilization of cotton fiber. Here, 12 single fiber quality traits were measured using Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS) equipment among 383 accessions of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). In addition, eight conventional fiber quality traits were assessed by the High Volume Instrument (HVI) System. Genome-wide association study (GWAS), linkage disequilibrium (LD) block genotyping and functional identification were conducted sequentially to uncover the associated elite loci and candidate genes of fiber quality traits. As a result, the previously reported pleiotropic locus FL_D11 regulating fiber length-related traits was identified in this study. More importantly, three novel pleiotropic loci (FM_A03, FF_A05, and FN_A07) regulating fiber maturity, fineness and neps, respectively, were detected based on AFIS traits. Numerous highly promising candidate genes were screened out by integrating RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analyses, including the reported GhKRP6 for fiber length, the newly identified GhMAP8 for maturity and GhDFR for fineness. The origin and evolutionary analysis of pleiotropic loci indicated that the selection pressure on FL_D11, FM_A03 and FF_A05 increased as the breeding period approached the present and the origins of FM_A03 and FF_A05 were traced back to cotton landraces. These findings reveal the genetic basis underlying fiber quality and provide insight into the genetic improvement and textile utilization of fiber in G. hirsutum.

Introduction: Defoliation by applying defoliants before machine picking is an important agricultural practice that enhances harvesting efficiency and leads to increased raw cotton purity. However, the fundamental characteristics of leaf abscission and the underlying genetic basis in cotton are not clearly understood. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to (1) reveal the phenotypic variations in cotton leaf abscission, (2) discover the whole-genome differentiation sweeps and genetic loci related to defoliation, (3) identify and verify the functions of key candidate genes associated with defoliation, and (4) explore the relationship between haplotype frequency of loci and environmental adaptability. Methods: Four defoliation-related traits of 383 re-sequenced Gossypium hirsutum accessions were investigated in four environments. The genome-wide association study (GWAS), linkage disequilibrium (LD) interval genotyping and functional identification were conducted. Finally, the haplotype variation related to environmental adaptability and defoliation traits was revealed. Results: Our findings revealed the fundamental phenotypic variations of defoliation traits in cotton. We showed that defoliant significantly increased the defoliation rate without incurring yield and fiber quality penalties. The strong correlations between defoliation traits and growth period traits were observed. A genome-wide association study of defoliation traits identified 174 significant SNPs. Two loci (RDR7 on A02 and RDR13 on A13) that significantly associated with the relative defoliation rate were described, and key candidate genes GhLRR and GhCYCD3;1, encoding a leucine-rich repeat (LRR) family protein and D3-type cell cyclin 1 protein respectively, were functional verified by expression pattern analysis and gene silencing. We found that combining of two favorable haplotypes (HapRDR7 and HapRDR13) improved sensitivity to defoliant. The favorable haplotype frequency generally increased in high latitudes in China, enabling adaptation to the local environment. Conclusion: Our findings lay an important foundation for the potentially broad application of leveraging key genetic loci in breeding machine-pickable cotton.

Abstract As a key factor influencing the cloud life cycle and radiative properties, liquid‐ice mass partitioning remains a major source of uncertainties in modeling mixed‐phase clouds. One of the unresolved problems is that liquid‐ice mixing is highly inhomogeneous, but it has not been well understood and quantified for parameterization. In this study, the liquid‐ice mixing homogeneity (χ) is quantified using the information‐theoretic entropy based on airborne measurements. It is demonstrated that χ is positively correlated with the condensed water content (CWC). Cloud regions with low χ are consist of liquid and ice clusters. With the increase in χ, the size and frequency of continuous mixed‐phase clusters increase. For a given CWC, χ is lower at relatively warm temperatures as sedimentation of large ice crystals can enhance the inhomogeneity. The strong positive relationship between CWC and χ indicates CWC should be considered when parameterizing the liquid‐ice mixing in models.

Abstract Mixed‐phase stratiform clouds contain numerous liquid, mixed‐phase, and ice clusters, quantifying the cluster scales is potentially helpful to improve the parameterizations of microphysics and radiation models. However, the scales of hydrometeor clusters at different levels of stratiform clouds are not well understood. In this study, using airborne measurements and a large eddy simulation, we show that turbulence plays an important role in controlling the clusters with length of a few hundred meters, while the scales of larger clusters have stronger vertical variations from cloud base to top. The liquid clusters are the largest near the cloud top, while the lengths of ice clusters decrease from cloud base to top. The lengths of mixed‐phase clusters depend on the glaciation process, a faster glaciation results in smaller mixed‐phase clusters. The results improve our understanding on how the liquid and ice are mixed at different levels in stratiform clouds.

Abstract Background Cotton fiber is a model tissue for studying microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). The Xklp2 (TPX2) proteins that belong to the novel MAPs member mainly participate in the formation and development of microtubule (MT). However, there is a lack of studies concerning the systematic characterization of the TPX2 genes family in cotton. Therefore, the identification and portrayal of G. hirsutum TPX2 genes can provide key targets for molecular manipulation in the breeding of cotton fiber improvement. Result In this study, TPX2 family genes were classified into two distinct subclasses TPXLs and MAP genes WAVE DAMPENED2-LIKE (WDLs) and quite conservative in quantity. GhWDL3 was significantly up-regulated in 15 days post anthesis fibers of ZRI-015 (an upland cotton with longer and stronger fiber). GhWDL3 promotes all stem hairs to become straight when overexpressed in Arabidopsis, which may indirectly regulate cotton fiber cell morphology during fiber development. Virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) results showed that GhWDL3 inhibited fiber cell elongation at fiber development periods through regulating the expression of cell wall related genes. Conclusion These results reveal that GhWDL3 regulated cotton fiber cell elongation and provide crucial information for the further investigation in the regulatory mechanisms/networks of cotton fiber length.

Robust water management is in intense demand in many water scarcity areas, such as arid and semi-arid regions in the world. As part of the regional water management strategy, rain enhancement is vital to replenish groundwater reservoirs, and the key challenge is how to assess its effectiveness. Some recent weather modification experiments attained cloud seeding effect through advanced in situ measurement coupled with accurate numerical simulation. However, there is still a lack of an objective and scientific approach to quantitatively evaluate the rain enhancement effect, especially for many non-randomized operational cloud seeding activities in China. In this study, we proposed a composite evaluation approach by analyzing two operational aircraft cloud seeding cases in stratus clouds in Shaanxi, China. By calculating the aircraft cloud seeding agent plumes, the target areas (as well as the control areas) of cloud seeding were dynamically and roughly determined. Physical properties, such as radar reflectivity and precipitation, were individually quantified in these areas. The cloud seeding effect was then evaluated by calculating the difference in parameter variation between target and control areas. This approach can be applied to qualitative analysis in a single aircraft cloud seeding operation and can also provide quantitative statistical results from multiple cloud seeding cases. We found that the average precipitation enhancement percentage of 18 operational aircraft cloud seeding cases is ~4.84%. Note that the homogeneity hypothesis of the seeding cloud, the error in the calculation of the target area, and the selection of control areas are the major uncertainties likely in the evaluation of the cloud seeding effect by this approach.

Strigolactones (SLs) represent a new group of phytohormones that play a pivotal role in the regulation of plant shoot branching and the development of adventitious roots. In cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, Gh), SLs play a crucial role in the regulation of fiber cell elongation and secondary cell wall thickness. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of SL signaling involved in fiber cell development are largely unknown. In this study, we report two SL-signaling genes, GhMAX2-3 and GhMAX2-6, which positively regulate cotton fiber elongation. Further protein—protein interaction and degradation assays showed that the repressor of the auxin cascade GhIAA17 serves as a substrate for the F-box E3 ligase GhMAX2. The in vivo ubiquitination assay suggested that GhMAX2-3 and GhMAX2-6 ubiquitinate GhIAA17 and coordinately degrade GhIAA17 with GhTIR1. The findings of this investigation offer valuable insights into the roles of GhMAX2-mediated SL signaling in cotton and establish a solid foundation for future endeavors aimed at optimizing cotton plant cultivation.

Abstract Objective This is a retrospective study of adverse events associated with preoperative computed tomography (CT)–guided hookwire or coil localisation. We analysed the experience and process flaws in resecting ground-glass nodules (GGNs) through video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and determined the remedial strategy. Methods Adverse events were evaluated in 40 patients with 45 GGNs who underwent CT-guided hookwire or coil localisation before VATS. For lesions not successfully marked or detected, palpation, resection of the highly suspected area, segmentectomy or lobectomy was performed. Results Among all adverse events, 15 were dislodgement of the marking materials, 5 were breakaway of the marking materials, 7 were > 2 cm distance between the lesions and the tips, 3 was marking material across the two adjacent lobes, 15 were pneumothorax and 2 were certain parts of marking materials stuck into the chest wall. All GGNs were resected successfully. 20 lesions were detected by palpation. 9 GGNs were discovered after the resection of highly suspected areas. Segmentectomies and lobectomies were performed directly on 7 and 9 GGNs, respectively. Conclusions When adverse events occur, a second intraoperative localisation, by resecting the highly suspected area either through non-anatomical resection (wedge resection) or anatomical resection (segmentectomy or lobectomy) using the VATS should be considered the alternatives for GGNs localization.

Abstract Background ORP (Oxysterol-binding protein-related proteins) genes play a role in lipid metabolism, vesicular transferring and signaling, and non-vesicular sterol transport. However, no systematic identification and analysis of ORP genes have been reported in cotton. Result In this study, we identified 14, 14, 7, and 7 ORP genes in G. hirsutum, G. barbadense, G. arboreum, and G. raimondii, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all ORP genes could be classified into four groups. Gene structure and conserved motif analysis suggest that the function of this gene family was conserved. The Ka/Ks analysis showed that this gene family was exposed to purifying selection during evolution. Transcriptome data showed that four ORP genes, especially GhORP_A02, were induced by abiotic stress treatment. The cis-acting elements in the ORP promoters were responsive to phytohormones and various abiotic stresses. The silenced plants of GhORP_A02 were more sensitive to drought stress when compared to control. Conclusion The major finding of this study shed light on the potential role of ORP genes in abiotic stress and provided a fundamental resource for further analysis in cotton.

The rotator cuff tear has emerged as a significant global health concern. However, existing therapies fail to fully restore the intricate bone-to-tendon gradients, resulting in compromised biomechanical functionalities of the reconstructed enthesis tissues. Herein, a tri-layered core–shell microfibrous scaffold with layer-specific growth factors (GFs) release is developed using coaxial electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing for in situ cell recruitment and differentiation to facilitate gradient enthesis tissue repair. Stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) is loaded in the shell, while basic fibroblast GF, transforming GF-beta, and bone morphogenetic protein-2 are loaded in the core of the EHD-printed microfibrous scaffolds in a layer-specific manner. Correspondingly, the tri-layered microfibrous scaffolds have a core–shell fiber size of (25.7 ± 5.1) μ m, with a pore size sequentially increasing from (81.5 ± 4.6) μ m to (173.3 ± 6.9) μ m, and to (388.9 ± 6.9 μ m) for the tenogenic, chondrogenic, and osteogenic instructive layers. A rapid release of embedded GFs is observed within the first 2 d, followed by a faster release of SDF-1 and a slightly slower release of differentiation GFs for approximately four weeks. The coaxial EHD-printed microfibrous scaffolds significantly promote stem cell recruitment and direct their differentiation toward tenocyte, chondrocyte, and osteocyte phenotypes in vitro . When implanted in vivo , the tri-layered core–shell microfibrous scaffolds rapidly restored the biomechanical functions and promoted enthesis tissue regeneration with native-like bone-to-tendon gradients. Our findings suggest that the microfibrous scaffolds with layer-specific GFs release may offer a promising clinical solution for enthesis regeneration.

Abstract Background Asian cotton (Gossypium arboreum L.), as a precious germplasm resource of cotton with insect resistance and stress tolerance, possesses a broad spectrum of phenotypic variation related to pigmentation. Flower color affects insect pollination and the ornamental value of plants. Studying flower color of Asian cotton varieties improves the rate of hybridization and thus enriches the diversity of germplasm resources. Meanwhile, it also impacts the development of the horticultural industry. Unfortunately, there is a clear lack of studies concerning intricate mechanisms of cotton flower-color differentiation. Hereby, we report an integrative approach utilizing transcriptome and metabolome concerning flower color variation in three Gossypium arboreum cultivars. Results A total of 215 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were identified, including 83 differentially accumulated flavonoids (DAFs). Colorless kaempferol was more abundant in white flowers, while gossypetin-fer showed specificity in white flowers. Quercetin and gossypetin were the main contributors to yellow petal formation. Pelargonidin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside and cyanidin-3-O-(6''-Malonylglucoside) showed high accumulation levels in purple petals. Quercetin and gossypetin pigments also promoted purple flower coloration. Moreover, 8178 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by RNA sequencing. The correlation results between total anthocyanins and DEGs were explored, indicating that 10 key structural genes and 29 transcription factors promoted anthocyanin biosynthesis and could be candidates for anthocyanin accumulation. Ultimately, we constructed co-expression networks of key DAFs and DEGs and demonstrated the interactions between specific metabolites and transcripts in different color flowers. Conclusion This study provides new insights into elucidating the regulatory mechanisms of cotton flower color and lays a potential foundation for generate cotton varieties with highly attractive flowers for pollinators.

Abstract Background The lateral root is one of the most important organs that constitute the root architecture system in plants. It can directly affect the contact area between plants and soil and plays an important role in plant structural support and nutrient absorption. Optimizing root architecture systems can greatly increase crop yields. This study was designed to identify the molecular markers and candidate genes associated with lateral root development in cotton and to evaluate correlations with yield and disease traits. Result The number of lateral roots for 14-day old seedlings was recorded for 215 Gossypium arboreum accessions. A correlation analysis showed that the number of lateral roots positively correlates with the sympodial branch node and seed index traits, but negatively correlates with lint percentage. A Genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified 18 significant SNPs with 19 candidate genes associated with the lateral root number. Expression analysis identified three genes (FLA12, WRKY29, and RBOHA) associated with lateral root development. Conclusion GWAS analysis identified key SNPs and candidate genes for lateral root number, and genes of FLA12, WRKY29, and RBOHA may play a pivotal role in lateral root development in Asian cotton.

Abstract Background Seedling stage plant biomass is usually used as an auxiliary trait to study plant growth and development or stress adversities. However, few molecular markers and candidate genes of seedling biomass-related traits were found in cotton. Result Here, we collected 215 Gossypium arboreum accessions, and investigated 11 seedling biomass-related traits including the fresh weight, dry weight, water content, and root shoot ratio. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) utilizing 142,5003 high-quality SNPs identified 83 significant associations and 69 putative candidate genes. Furthermore, the transcriptome profile of the candidate genes emphasized higher expression of Ga03G1298, Ga09G2054, Ga10G1342, Ga11G0096, and Ga11G2490 in four representative cotton accessions. The relative expression levels of those five genes were further verified by qRT-PCR. Conclusions The significant SNPs, candidate genes identified in this study are expected to lay a foundation for studying the molecular mechanism for early biomass development and related traits in Asian cotton.

Abstract Background For people with lower-limb amputations, wearing a prosthetic limb helps restore their motor abilities for daily activities. However, the prosthesis's potential benefits are hindered by limited somatosensory feedback from the affected limb and its prosthesis. Previous studies have examined various sensory substitution systems to alleviate this problem; the prominent approach is to convert foot–ground interaction to tactile stimulations. However, positive outcomes for improving their postural stability are still rare. We hypothesized that the sensory substiution system based on surrogated tactile stimulus is capable of improving the standing stability among people with lower-limb amputations. Methods We designed a wearable device consisting of four pressure sensors and two vibrators and tested it among people with unilateral transtibial amputations (n = 7) and non-disabled participants (n = 8). The real-time measurements of foot pressure were fused into a single representation of foot–ground interaction force, which was encoded by varying vibration intensity of the two vibrators attached to the participants’ forearm. The vibration intensity followed a logarithmic function of the force representation, in keeping with principles of tactile psychophysics. The participants were tested with a classical postural stability task in which visual disturbances perturbed their quiet standing. Results With a brief familiarization of the system, the participants exhibited better postural stability against visual disturbances when switching on sensory substitution than without. The body sway was substantially reduced, as shown in head movements and excursions of the center of pressure. The improvement was present for both groups of participants and was particularly pronounced in more challenging conditions with larger visual disturbances. Conclusions Substituting otherwise missing foot pressure feedback with vibrotactile signals can improve postural stability for people with lower-limb amputations. The design of the mapping between the foot–ground interaction force and the tactile signals is essential for the user to utilize the surrogated tactile signals for postural control, especially for situations that their postural control is challenged.

Abstract Background Cotton is an important cash crop. The fiber length has always been a hot spot, but multi-factor control of fiber quality makes it complex to understand its genetic basis. Previous reports suggested that OsGASR9 promotes germination, width, and thickness by GAs in rice, while the overexpression of AtGASA10 leads to reduced silique length, which is likely to reduce cell wall expansion. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the function of GhGASA10 in cotton fibers development. Results To explore the molecular mechanisms underlying fiber elongation regulation concerning GhGASA10–1, we revealed an evolutionary basis, gene structure, and expression. Our results emphasized the conservative nature of GASA family with its origin in lower fern plants S. moellendorffii. GhGASA10–1 was localized in the cell membrane, which may synthesize and transport secreted proteins to the cell wall. Besides, GhGASA10–1 promoted seedling germination and root extension in transgenic Arabidopsis, indicating that GhGASA10–1 promotes cell elongation. Interestingly, GhGASA10–1 was upregulated by IAA at fiber elongation stages. Conclusion We propose that GhGASA10–1 may promote fiber elongation by regulating the synthesis of cellulose induced by IAA, to lay the foundation for future research on the regulation networks of GASA10–1 in cotton fiber development.

Cotton is an important natural fiber crop; its seeds are the main oil source. Abiotic stresses cause a significant decline in its production. The WUSCHEL-related Homeobox (WOX) genes have been involved in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, the functions of WOX genes are less known in cotton. This study identified 39, 40, 21, and 20 WOX genes in Gossypium hirsutum, Gossypium barbadense, Gossypium arboreum, and Gossypium raimondii, respectively. All the WOX genes in four cotton species could be classified into three clades, which is consistent with previous research. The gene structure and conserved domain of all WOX genes were analyzed. The expressions of WOX genes in germinating hypocotyls and callus were characterized, and it was found that most genes were up-regulated. One candidate gene Gh_ A01G127500 was selected to perform the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) experiment, and it was found that the growth of the silenced plant (pCLCrVA: GhWOX4_A01) was significantly inhibited compared with the wild type. In the silenced plant, there is an increase in antioxidant activities and a decrease in oxidant activities compared with the control plant. In physiological analysis, the relative electrolyte leakage level and the excised leaf water loss of the infected plant were increased. Still, both the relative leaf water content and the chlorophyll content were decreased. This study proved that WOX genes play important roles in drought stress and callus induction, but more work must be performed to address the molecular functions of WOX genes.

Abstract Background Cotton fibers are single-celled extensions of the seed epidermis, a model tissue for studying cytoskeleton. Tubulin genes play a critical role in synthesizing the microtubules (MT) as a core element of the cytoskeleton. However, there is a lack of studies concerning the systematic characterization of the tubulin gene family in cotton. Therefore, the identification and portrayal of G. hirsutum tubulin genes can provide key targets for molecular manipulation in cotton breeding. Result In this study, we investigated all tubulin genes from different plant species and identified 98 tubulin genes in G. hirsutum. Phylogenetic analysis showed that tubulin family genes were classified into three subfamilies. The protein motifs and gene structure of α-, β-tubulin genes are more conserved compared with γ-tubulin genes. Most tubulin genes are located at the proximate ends of the chromosomes. Spatiotemporal expression pattern by transcriptome and qRT-PCR analysis revealed that 12 α-tubulin and 7 β-tubulin genes are specifically expressed during different fiber development stages. However, Gh.A03G027200, Gh.D03G169300, and Gh.A11G258900 had differential expression patterns at distinct stages of fiber development in varieties J02508 and ZRI015. Conclusion In this study, the evolutionary analysis showed that the tubulin genes were divided into three clades. The genetic structures and molecular functions were highly conserved in different plants. Three candidate genes, Gh.A03G027200, Gh.D03G169300, and Gh.A11G258900 may play a key role during fiber development complementing fiber length and strength.

Abstract Background Potocki–Shaffer syndrome (PSS) is a rare contiguous gene deletion syndrome marked by haploinsufficiency of genes in chromosomal region 11p11.2p12. Approximately 50 cases of PSS have been reported; however, a syndrome with a PSS-like clinical phenotype caused by 11p11.12p12 duplication has not yet been reported. Methods 11p11.12p12 duplication syndrome was identified and evaluated using a multidisciplinary protocol. Diagnostic studies included intelligence testing, thorough physical examination, electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, ultrasonography, biochemical tests and karyotype analysis. Next-generation sequencing analysis clarified the location of the chromosomal variations, which was confirmed by chromosome microarray analysis (CMA). Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed to exclude single nucleotide variations (SNVs). A wider literature search was performed to evaluate the correlation between the genes contained in the chromosomal region and clinical phenotypes. Results The proband was a 36-year-old mother with intellectual disability (ID) and craniofacial anomalies (CFA). She and her older son, who had a similar clinical phenotype, both carried the same 11p11.12p12 duplication with a copy number increase of approximately 10.5 Mb (chr11:40231033_50762504, GRCh37/hg19) in chromosome bands 11p11.12p12. In addition, she gave birth to a child with a normal phenotype who did not carry the 11p11.12p12 duplication. By literature research and DECIPHER, we identified some shared and some distinct features between this duplication syndrome and PSS. One or more of ALX4, SLC35C1, PHF21A and MAPK8IP1 may be responsible for 11p11.12p12 duplication syndrome. Conclusions We present the first report of 11p11.12p12 duplication syndrome. It is an interesting case worth reporting. The identification of clinical phenotypes will facilitate genetic counselling. A molecular cytogenetic approach was helpful in identifying the genetic aetiology of the patients and potential candidate genes with triplosensitive effects involved in 11p11.12p12 duplication.

Abstract Background Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) accounts for more than 90% of the annual world cotton output because of its high yield potential. However, yield and fiber quality traits often show negative correlations. We constructed four F2 populations of upland cotton, using two normal lines (4133B and SGK9708) with high yield potential but moderate fiber quality and two introgression lines (Suyuan04–3 and J02–247) with superior fiber quality, and used them to investigate the genetic basis underlying complex traits such as yield and fiber quality in upland cotton. We also phenotyped eight agronomic and economic traits and mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Results Extensive phenotype variations and transgressive segregation were found across the segregation populations. We constructed four genetic maps of 585.97 centiMorgan (cM), 752.45 cM, 752.45 cM, and 1 163.66 cM, one for each of the four F2 populations. Fifty QTLs were identified across the four populations (7 for plant height, 27 for fiber quality and 16 for yield). The same QTLs were identified in different populations, including qBW4 and qBW2, which were linked to a common simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker, NAU1255. A QTL cluster containing eight QTLs for six different traits was characterized on linkage group 9 of the 4133B × Suyuan04–3 population. Conclusions These findings will provide insights into the genetic basis of simultaneous improvement of yield and fiber quality in upland cotton breeding.

Growth-regulating factors-interacting factors (GIFs) are a type of transcription co-activators in plants, playing crucial roles in plants’ growth, development, and stress adaptation. Here, a total of 35 GIF genes were identified and clustered into two groups by phylogenetic analysis in four cotton genus. The gene structure and conserved domain analysis proved the conservative characteristics of GIF genes in cotton. The function of GIF genes was evaluated in two cotton accessions, Ji A-1-7 (33xi) and King, which have larger and smaller lateral root numbers, respectively. The results showed that the expression of GhGIF4 in Ji A-1-7 (33xi) was higher than that in King. The enzyme activity and microstructure assay showed a higher POD activity, lower MDA content, and more giant cells of the lateral root emergence part phenotype in Ji A-1-7 (33xi) than in King. A mild waterlogging assay showed the GIF genes were down-regulated in the waterlogged seedling. Further confirmation of the suppression of GhGIF4 in cotton plants further confirmed that GhGIF4 could reduce the lateral root numbers in cotton. This study could provide a basis for future studies of the role of GIF genes in upland cotton.

Abstract Background Root systems are critical for plant growth and development. The Casparian strip in root systems is involved in stress resistance and maintaining homeostasis. Casparian strip membrane domain proteins (CASPs) are responsible for the formation of Casparian strips. Results To investigate the function of CASPs in cotton, we identified and characterized 48, 54, 91 and 94 CASPs from Gossypium arboreum, Gossypium raimondii, Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum, respectively, at the genome-wide level. However, only 29 common homologous CASP genes were detected in the four Gossypium species. A collinearity analysis revealed that whole genome duplication (WGD) was the primary reason for the expansion of the genes of the CASP family in the four cotton species. However, dispersed duplication could also contribute to the expansion of the GaCASPs gene family in the ancestors of G. arboreum. Phylogenetic analysis was used to cluster a total of 85 CASP genes from G. arboreum and Arabidopsis into six distinct groups, while the genetic structure and motifs of CASPs were conserved in the same group. Most GaCASPs were expressed in diverse tissues, with the exception of that five GaCASPs (Ga08G0113, Ga08G0114, Ga08G0116, Ga08G0117 and Ga08G0118) that were highly expressed in root tissues. Analyses of the tissue and subcellular localization suggested that GaCASP27 genes (Ga08G0117) are membrane protein genes located in the root. In the GaCASP27 silenced plants and the Arabidopsis mutants, the lateral root number significantly increased. Furthermore, GaMYB36, which is related to root development was found to regulate lateral root growth by targeting GaCASP27. Conclusions This study provides a fundamental understanding of the CASP gene family in cotton and demonstrates the regulatory role of GaCASP27 on lateral root growth and development.

This paper considers the problem of mutual information maximization in a two-hop relay network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), where the relay nodes use the power splitting (PS) scheme to harvest the energy for information forwarding. Unlike previous research, this paper focuses on a more practical scenario, where the inputs to the network are assumed to be finite-alphabet signals. Although each node in the network is assumed to have single antenna, we show that the relay network can be regarded as an effective multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Our goal is to perform the joint optimization on the precoder at source and PS ratio at relays to maximize the mutual information. Although the formulated problem is nondeterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard, we theoretically analyze the optimal PS ratio; then, by using the structure of optimization problem, a near optimal precoder design based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR) is proposed; further, to reduce the complexity of algorithm, another precoder design based on search technique, which exploiting the structure of precoder, is developed only with a slight performance degradation. Simulation results verify the efficacy of proposed precoder designs.

In this paper, the problem of mutual information maximization in a two-hop multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is investigated, where the relay node, without constant power supply, harvests the energy for information forwarding. The goal is to maximize the mutual information by using the joint design of source and relay precoders, which is formulated as an optimization problem under the constraints of transmit power and harvested energy. Two scenarios with practical energy harvesting schemes employed at the relay, i.e., power splitting (PS) and time switching (TS) schemes, are considered. Although the formulated optimization problems in the two scenarios are both nondeterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard, by exploiting the structure of the optimization problems and analyzing the characteristics of precoders, we develop near optimal joint source and relay precoding algorithms for them. Additionally, we analyze the feasible regions of PS and TS ratios, respectively, and propose a backtracking line search based method to find near optimal PS and TS ratios. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: 1) Unlike existing works based on the assumption of ideal Gaussian signals, this paper supposes the inputs to the network are finite-alphabet signals, which is a more practical scenario. 2) The high complexity of mutual information with finite-alphabet signals leads to an intractable optimization problem; however, an efficient solving framework based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) theorem is proposed. Finally, simulation results verify the efficacy of the proposed joint precoding designs.

Abstract Background Sulfotransferases (SOTs) (EC 2.8.2.-) play a crucial role in the sulphate conjugation reaction involved in plant growth, vigor, stress resistance and pathogen infection. SOTs in Arabidopsis have been carried out and divided into 8 groups. However, the systematic analysis and functional information of SOT family genes in cotton have rarely been reported. Results According to the results of BLASTP and HMMER, we isolated 46, 46, 76 and 77 SOT genes in the genome G. arboreum, G. raimondii, G. barbadense and G. hirsutum, respectively. A total of 170 in 245 SOTs were further classified into four groups based on the orthologous relationships comparing with Arabidopsis, and tandem replication primarily contributed to the expansion of SOT gene family in G. hirsutum. Expression profiles of the GhSOT showed that most genes exhibited a high level of expression in the stem, leaf, and the initial stage of fiber development. The localization analysis indicated that GhSOT67 expressed in cytoplasm and located in stem and leaf tissue. Additionally, the expression of GhSOT67 were induced and the length of stem and leaf hairs were shortened after gene silencing mediated by Agrobacterium, compared with the blank and negative control plants. Conclusions Our findings indicated that SOT genes might be associated with fiber development in cotton and provided valuable information for further studies of SOT genes in Gossypium.

The study of A-genome Asian cotton as a potential fiber donor in Gossypium species may offer an enhanced understanding of complex genetics and novel players related to fiber quality traits. Assessment of individual fibers providing classified fiber quality information to the textile industry is Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS) in the recent technological era. Keeping the scenario, a diverse collection of 215 Asiatic cotton accessions were evaluated across three agro-ecological zones of China. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) was performed to detect association signals related to 17 AFIS fiber quality traits grouped into four categories viz: NEPs, fiber length, maturity, and fineness. Significant correlations were found within as well as among different categories of various traits related to fiber quality. Fiber fineness has shown a strong correlation to all other categories, whereas these categories are shown interrelationships via fiber-fineness. A total of 7,429 SNPs were found in association with 17 investigated traits, of which 177 were selected as lead SNPs. In the vicinity of these lead SNPs, 56 differentially expressed genes in various tissues/development stages were identified as candidate genes. This compendium connecting trait-SNP-genes may allow further prioritization of genes in GWAS loci to enable mechanistic studies. These identified quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) may prove helpful in fiber quality improvement in Asian cotton through marker-assisted breeding as well as in reviving eroded genetic factors of G. hirsutum via introgression breeding.

Cultivated cottons are the most important economic crop, which produce natural fiber for the textile industry. In recent years, the genetic basis of several essential traits for cultivated cottons has been gradually elucidated by decoding their genomic variations. Although an abundance of resequencing data is available in public, there is still a lack of a comprehensive tool to exhibit the results of genomic variations and genome-wide association study (GWAS). To assist cotton researchers in utilizing these data efficiently and conveniently, we constructed the cotton genomic variation database (CottonGVD; http://120.78.174.209/ or http://db.cngb.org/cottonGVD). This database contains the published genomic information of three cultivated cotton species, the corresponding population variations (SNP and InDel markers), and the visualized results of GWAS for major traits. Various built-in genomic tools help users retrieve, browse, and query the variations conveniently. The database also provides interactive maps (e.g., Manhattan map, scatter plot, heatmap, and linkage disequilibrium block) to exhibit GWAS and expression GWAS results. Cotton researchers could easily focus on phenotype-associated loci visualization, and they are interested in and screen for candidate genes. Moreover, CottonGVD will continue to update by adding more data and functions.

Abstract p21WAF1/CIP1 (p21) plays critical roles in cell‐cycle regulation and DNA repair and is transcriptionally regulated through p53‐dependent or ‐independent pathways. Bioinformatic analysis predicated one stress‐response element (STRE) implicated in single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2395655 of the p21 promoter. Here, we investigated the transcriptional regulatory function of rs2395655 variant genotype and analyzed its associations with the p21 expression and clinical outcomes in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. Luciferase assay results showed significantly increased transcriptional activity of the rs2395655 G allele‐containing p21 promoter compared with rs2395655 A allele‐containing counterpart, especially in ESCC cells with ectopic LEDGF/p75 expression. Furthermore electrophoretic mobility shift assay using the rs2395655 G or A allele‐containing probe and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay with specific anti‐LEDGF/p75 antibody indicated the potential binding activity of LEDGF/p75 with the STRE element implicated in rs2395655 G allele of the p21 promoter. Subsequent specific RNA interference‐mediated depletion or ectopic expression of LEDGF/p75 caused obviously down‐ or up‐regulated expression of p21 mRNA in ESCC cells harboring rs2395655 GG genotype but not cells with rs2395655 AA genotype. Furthermore, rs2395655 GG genotype carriers showed significantly elevated p21 protein expression and conferred survival advantage in both univariate and multivariate analyses in total 218 ESCC patients. Our findings suggest that LEDGF/p75 regulates the p21 expression in ESCC cells through interacting with STRE element implicated in polymorphism rs2395655 and the elevated p21 protein expression and rs2395655 GG genotype may serve as positive prognostic factors for ESCC patients.

Background. Acute lung injury (ALI) always leads to severe inflammation. As inflammation and oxidative stress are the common pathological basis of endotoxin-induced inflammatory injury and ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI), we speculate that remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) can be protective for ALI when used as remote inflammatory preconditioning (RInPC). Method. A total of 21 Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the animal experiments. Eighteen rats were equally and randomly divided into the control (NS injection), LPS (LPS injection), and RInPC groups. The RInPC was performed prior to the LPS injection via tourniquet blockage of blood flow to the right hind limb and adopted three cycles of 5 min tying followed by 5 min untying. Animals were sacrificed 24 hours later. There were 2 rats in the LPS group and 1 in the RInPC group who died before the end of the experiment. Supplementary experiments in the LPS and RInPC groups were conducted to ensure that 6 animals in each group reached the end of the experiment. Results. In the present study, we demonstrated that the RInPC significantly attenuated the LPS-induced ALI in rats. Apoptotic cells were reduced significantly by the RInPC, with the simultaneous improvement of apoptosis-related proteins. Reduction of MPO and MDA and increasing of SOD activity were found significantly improved by the RInPC. Increasing of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 induced by the LPS was inhibited, while IL-10 was significantly increased by RInPC, compared to the LPS group. Conclusion. RInPC could inhibit inflammation and attenuate oxidative stress, thereby reducing intrinsic apoptosis and providing lung protection in the LPS-induced ALI in rats.

Abstract Background Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (PIMT) is a rare disease in China and its incidence is much lower than that of tuberculosis. PIMT accounts for only 0.04–1.2% of all lung tumors. PIMT can occurs in any age and nearly every part of the body. The clinical symptoms and radiological features of PIMT are nonspecific. Diagnosis is only made on the basis of histopathologic or immunohistochemical evaluation of the postoperation resected tissue. The therapeutic approach to PIMT should rely mainly on complete surgical resection. Case presentation We report a case of PIMT with hemoptysis. The girl was misdiagnosed with tuberculosis and treated with anti-tuberculous drugs for a long period of time. A right upper and middle lobectomy was performed and further assessment of the tissue demonstrated a pathologic diagnosis of PIMT. Conclusions Despite a high incidence of tuberculosis, we must consider the possibility of PIMTs in such cases to prevent misdiagnosis and mistreatment.

The spatiotemporal statistical characteristics of warm-season deep convective systems, particularly deep convective systems initiation (DCSI), over China and its vicinity are investigated using Himawari-8 geostationary satellite measurements collected during April-September from 2016 to 2020. Based on a satellite brightness temperature multiple-threshold convection identification and tracking method, a total of 47593 deep convective systems with lifetimes of at least 3 h were identified in the region. There are three outstanding local maxima in the region, located in the southwestern, central and eastern Tibetan Plateau and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, followed by a region of high convective activities in South China. Most convective systems are developed over the Tibetan Plateau, predominantly eastward-moving, while those developed in Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and South China mostly move westward and southwestward. The DSCI occurrences become extremely active after the onset of the summer monsoon and tend to reach a maximum in July and August, with a diurnal peak at 11–13 LST in response to the enhanced solar heating and monsoon flows. Several DCSI hotspots are identified in the regions of inland mountains, tropical islands and coastal mountains during daytime, but in basins, plains and coastal areas during nighttime. DCSI over land and oceans exhibits significantly different sub-seasonal and diurnal variations. Oceanic DCSI has an ambiguous diurnal variation, although its sub-seasonal variation is similar to that over land. It is demonstrated that the high spatiotemporal resolution satellite dataset provides rich information for understanding the convective systems over China and vicinity, particularly the complex terrain and oceans where radar observations are sparse or none, which will help to improve the convective systems and initiation nowcasting.

The variable stiffness exosuit has great potential for human augmentation and medical applications. However, the model of the variable stiffness mechanism in exosuits is far from satisfactory for the accurate prediction and control of friction force. This paper presents a friction prediction model of a variable stiffness lower limb exosuit, verifies its prediction performance, and identifies its applicability. The friction force model was established by the Coulomb friction hypothesis. The equivalent coefficient, which is the core parameter of the model, was determined based on friction and squeezing force data obtained by tests and an ANSYS simulation. Experiments show that the prediction error of the proposed model can reach 15% with a proper structural dimension change constraint. The friction force control test showed that the achieved model can shorten the settling time of the step response by 26% and eliminate the steady-state error. Verifications indicate that the proposed method can provide guidance to the modeling of other friction/stiffness structures, especially friction-based wearable robot structure models and predictions.

Abstract This study used the Weather Research and Forecasting model with chemistry (WRF‐Chem) with a parameterization for the emissions of sea‐salt aerosols to assess the effects of sea‐salt aerosols on a tropical cyclone. A control simulation (Ctl) and a simulation with a sea‐salt emission flux that is one‐tenth of that in Ctl (Low) were conducted. Results show that sea‐salt aerosols enhance the condensation process, promoting vertical motion and precipitation in a tropical cyclone. Peak precipitation value in Ctl is 120% that in Low. Enhanced vertical motion in Ctl results in increase of water vapor transport to the upper atmosphere, which promotes deposition growth of cloud ice crystals. Therefore, cloud ice mixing ratio and stratiform precipitation in Ctl are larger than those in Low. Stratiform precipitation in the rain band is about 0.5 mm/h in Ctl and about 0.4 mm/h in Low.

ABSTRACT: The mysterious ancient Mesoamerican Indian crop chia (Salvia hispanica) is revived and expanding worldwide due to its richness of valuable nutraceuticals such as α-linolenic acid (ALA), antioxidants, food fiber, gels, and proteins. We carried out a pilot experiment on chia planting in non-frost Sichuan Basin, at Hechuan Base (30˚0′ 43″ N, 106˚7′ 41″ E, 216 m), Southwest University, Chongqing, China. The split-plot trial contained two factors, 3 spring-summer sowing times as main plots, and 6 densities as subplots, with 3 replicates. Phenological, botanical, adversity, yield, and seed quality traits were investigated. Plants were very tall, suffered from lodging, and flowered in mid-October. Sichuan Basin can be considered as a north edge for growing chia, with low yield (680 kg/hectare) because of insufficient seed filling and maturation in autumn-winter season (1000-seed weight of 1.14 g). However, its ALA content is 5 percent points higher than the seed-donor commercial bottle (65.06%/63.96% VS 59.35%/59.74% for black/white seeds), accompanied by decrease oleic and stearic acid, while linoleic acid and palmitic acid are equivalent. Considering its short-day habit, it is recommended to try sowing in middle summer (from late June to early August) to avoid too long growing period, excessive vegetative growth, and waste of field and climate resources caused by spring-summer sowing. Furthermore, winter sowing of chia with mulch cover could also be tried, with an expectation of harvesting in summer. Most importantly, only when the photoperiod-insensitive early flowering stocks are created, chia can be recommended as a low-risk crop to the farmers of this region.

Repetitive lifting of heavy loads increases the risk of back pain and even lumbar vertebral injuries to workers. Active exoskeletons can help workers lift loads by providing power assistance, and therefore reduce the moment and force applied on L5/S1 joint of human body when performing lifting tasks. However, most existing active exoskeletons for lifting assistance are unable to automatically detect user's lift movement, which limits the wide application of active exoskeletons in factories. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective lift detection strategy for exoskeleton control. This strategy uses only exoskeleton integrated sensors, without any extra sensors to capture human motion intentions. This makes the lift detection system more practical for applications in manufacturing environments. Seven healthy subjects participated in this research. Three different sessions were carried out, two for training and one for testing the algorithm. In the two training sessions, subjects were asked to wear a hip exoskeleton, controlled in transparent mode, and perform repetitive lifting and a locomotion circuit; lifting was executed with different techniques. The collected data were used to train the lift detection model. In the testing session, the exoskeleton was controlled in order to deliver torque to assist the lifting action, based on the lift detection made by the trained algorithm. The across-subject average accuracy of lift detection during online test was 97.97 ± 1.39% with subject-dependent model. Offline, the algorithm was trained with data acquired from all subjects to verify its performance for subject-independent detection, and an accuracy of 97.48 ± 1.53% was achieved. Omega-3 fatty acid desaturase (ω-3 FAD, D15D) is a key enzyme for α-linolenic acid (ALA) biosynthesis. Both chia (Salvia hispanica) and perilla (Perilla frutescens) contain high levels of ALA in seeds. In this study, the ω-3 FAD gene family was systematically and comparatively cloned from chia and perilla. Perilla FAD3, FAD7, FAD8 and chia FAD7 are encoded by single-copy (but heterozygous) genes, while chia FAD3 is encoded by 2 distinct genes. Only 1 chia FAD8 sequence was isolated. In these genes, there are 1 to 6 transcription start sites, 1 to 8 poly(A) tailing sites, and 7 introns. The 5'UTRs of PfFAD8a/b contain 1 to 2 purine-stretches and 2 pyrimidine-stretches. An alternative splice variant of ShFAD7a/b comprises a 5'UTR intron. Their encoded proteins harbor an FA_desaturase conserved domain together with 4 trans-membrane helices and 3 histidine boxes. Phylogenetic analysis validated their identity of dicot microsomal or plastidial ω-3 FAD proteins, and revealed some important evolutionary features of plant ω-3 FAD genes such as convergent evolution across different phylums, single-copy status in algae, and duplication events in certain taxa. The qRT-PCR assay showed that the ω-3 FAD genes of two species were expressed at different levels in various organs, and they also responded to multiple stress treatments. The functionality of the ShFAD3 and PfFAD3 enzymes was confirmed by yeast expression. The systemic molecular and functional features of the ω-3 FAD gene family from chia and perilla revealed in this study will facilitate their use in future studies on genetic improvement of ALA traits in oilseed crops.

Locomotion intent prediction is essential for the control of powered lower-limb prostheses to realize smooth locomotion transitions. In this research, we develop a multi-sensor fusion based locomotion intent prediction system, which can recognize current locomotion mode and detect locomotion transitions in advance. Seven able-bodied subjects were recruited for this research. Signals from two foot pressure insoles and three inertial measurement units (one on the thigh, one on the shank and the other on the foot) are measured. A two-level recognition strategy is used for the recognition with linear discriminate classifier. Six kinds of locomotion modes and ten kinds of locomotion transitions are tested in this study. Recognition accuracy during steady locomotion periods (i.e., no locomotion transitions) is 99.71% ± 0.05% for seven able-bodied subjects. During locomotion transition periods, all the transitions are correctly detected and most of them can be detected before transiting to new locomotion modes. No significant deterioration in recognition performance is observed in the following five hours after the system is trained, and small number of experiment trials are required to train reliable classifiers.

Fourteen-month precipitation measurements from a second-generation PARSIVEL disdrometer deployed in Beijing, northern China, were analyzed to investigate the microphysical structure of raindrop size distribution and its implications on polarimetric radar applications. Rainfall types are classified and analyzed in the domain of median volume diameter D 0 and the normalized intercept parameter N w . The separation line between convective and stratiform rain is almost equivalent to rain rate at 8.6 mm h−1 and radar reflectivity at 36.8 dBZ. Convective rain in Beijing shows distinct seasonal variations in log 10 N w − D 0 domain. X-band dual-polarization variables are simulated using the T-matrix method to derive radar-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) estimators, and rainfall products at hourly scale are evaluated for four radar QPE estimators using collocated but independent rain gauge observations. This study also combines the advantages of individual estimators based on the thresholds on polarimetric variables. Results show that the blended QPE estimator has better performance than others. The rainfall microphysical analysis presented in this study is expected to facilitate the development of a high-resolution X-band radar network for urban QPE applications.

The number of exoskeletons providing load-lifting assistance has significantly increased over the last decade. In this field, to take full advantage of active exoskeletons and provide appropriate assistance to users, it is essential to develop control systems that are able to reliably recognize and classify the users’ movement when performing various lifting tasks. To this end, the movement-decoding algorithm should work robustly with different users and recognize different lifting techniques. Currently, there are no studies presenting methods to classify different lifting techniques in real time for applications with lumbar exoskeletons. We designed a real-time two-step algorithm for a portable hip exoskeleton that can detect the onset of the lifting movement and classify the technique used to accomplish the lift, using only the exoskeleton-embedded sensors. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 15 healthy male subjects participated in two experimental sessions in which they were asked to perform lifting tasks using four different techniques (namely, squat lifting, stoop lifting, left-asymmetric lifting, and right-asymmetric lifting) while wearing an active hip exoskeleton. Five classes (the four lifting techniques plus the class “no lift„) were defined for the classification model, which is based on a set of rules (first step) and a pattern recognition algorithm (second step). Leave-one-subject-out cross-validation showed a recognition accuracy of 99.34 ± 0.85%, and the onset of the lift movement was detected within the first 121 to 166 ms of movement.

In this paper, we present an approach to sense human body capacitance and apply it to recognize lower limb locomotion modes. The proposed wearable sensing system includes sensing bands, a signal processing circuit and a gait event detection module. Experiments on long-term working stability, adaptability to disturbance and locomotion mode recognition are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Twelve able-bodied subjects are recruited, and eleven normal gait modes are investigated. With an event-dependent linear discriminant analysis classifier and feature selection procedure, four time-domain features are used for pattern recognition and satisfactory recognition accuracies (97:3% ± 0:5%, 97:0% ± 0:4%, 95:6% ± 0:9% and 97:0% ± 0:4% for four phases of one gait cycle respectively) are obtained. The accuracies are comparable with that from electromyography-based systems and inertial-based systems. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed lower limb capacitive sensing approach in recognizing human normal gaits.

In recent years, the development of myoelectric control for robotic lower-limb prostheses makes it possible for amputee users to volitionally control prosthetic joints. However, the human-centered control loop is not closed due to the lack of sufficient feedback of prosthetic joint movement, and it may result in poor control performance. In this research, we propose a vibrotactile stimulation system to provide the feedback of ankle joint position, and validate the necessity of combining it with volitional myoelectric control to achieve improved control performance. The stimulation system is wearable and consists of six vibrators. Three of the vibrators are placed on the anterior side of the thigh and the other three on the posterior side of the thigh. To explore the potential of applying the proposed vibrotactile feedback system for prosthetic ankle control, eight able-bodied subjects and two transtibial amputee subjects (TT1 and TT2) were recruited in this research, and several experiments were designed to investigate subjects' sensitivities to discrete and continuous vibration stimulations applied on the thigh. Then, we proposed a stimulation controller to produce different stimulation patterns according to current ankle angle. Amputee subjects were asked to control a virtual ankle displayed on the computer screen to reach different target ankle angles with a myoelectric controller, and control performances under different feedback conditions were compared. Experimental results indicated that subjects were more sensitive to stimulation position changes (identification accuracies were 96.39pm0.86%, 91.11% and 93.89% for able-bodied subjects, TT1 and TT2, respectively) than stimulation amplitude changes (identification accuracies were 89.89pm2.40%, 87.04% and 85.19% for able-bodied subjects, TT1 and TT2, respectively). Response times of able-bodied subjects, TT1 and TT2 to stimulation pattern changes were 0.47pm0.02s, 0.53s and 0.48s, respectively. Furthermore, for both TT1 and TT2, the absolute error of virtual ankle control reduced by about 50% with the addition of vibrotactile feedback. These results suggest that it is promising to apply the vibrotactile feedback system for the control of robotic transtibial prostheses.

Locomotion mode recognition is one of the key aspects of control of intelligent prostheses. This paper presents a wireless wearable multi-sensor system for locomotion mode recognition. The sensor suit of the system includes three inertial measurement units (IMUs) and eight force sensors. The system was built to measure both kinematic (tilt angles) and dynamic (ground contact forces) signals of human gaits. To evaluate the recognition performance of the system, seven motion modes and sit-to-stand transition were monitored. With a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier, the proposed system can accurately classify the current states. The overall motion mode recognition accuracy was 99.9% during the stance phase and 98.5% during the swing phase. For sit-to-stand transition recognition, the average accuracy was 99.9%. These promising results show the potential of the designed system for the control of intelligent prostheses.

With the increasing use of radar technology across various fields, electromagnetic pollution has become a growing concern, posing significant risks to human health. Consequently, there is a rising interest in developing wearable, flexible fabric-based absorbers that can efficiently absorb electromagnetic waves. However, the low dielectric constant of fabrics makes it challenging to achieve high absorption rates and broad bandwidth at low frequencies. To address this issue, in this study, we introduce a fabric-based broadband metamaterial absorber using felt as the dielectric substrate. The absorber features a centrosymmetric square block array design, incorporating a PU conductive film as the surface resonant material. By fine-tuning the parameters of each component in the absorber's equivalent circuit and optimizing structural parameters, the absorber achieves an extended bandwidth from 3.92 to 15.25 GHz, with a relative absorption bandwidth of 118.21%. Impressively, in the lower frequency C-band, the absorber maintains an efficiency of over 95%. The absorber was fabricated using the "cut-transfer-paste patterning method." Testing results demonstrate that it is insensitive to incident angle and polarization and retains excellent absorption performance even when being bent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
