We report Hubble Space Telescope observations of variability within the reflection nebulosity of HH 30, a compact bipolar nebula which is a nearly edge-on accretion disk system.

WFPC2/HST images of Saturn's far-ultraviolet aurora reveal emissions confined to a narrow band of latitudes near Saturn's north and south poles. The aurorae are most prominent in the morning sector with patterns that appear fixed in local time.

Short exposure Planetary Camera images of T Tauri have been obtained using broadband filters spanning the wavelength range 0.55-0.80 mu. The optically visible star lies very close to an arc of reflection nebulosity.

Careful examination of 28,460 selected Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) long exposures from 1994, 1995 and early 1996 has revealed trails of 96 distinct moving objects.

This oral report describes the first images of Saturn's far- ultraviolet polar aurora taken with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 in October 1994. The images revealed auroral emissions from atomic and molecular hydrogen in both the north and south circumpolar region. Details of this observational data are given and interpreted.

HL Tauri is considered a prototype solar-mass T Tauri star. Planetary camera images of HL Tauri have been obtained through V, R, and I band filters using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 aboard the refurbished Hubble Space Telescope. These images show that HL Tauri is entirely reflection nebulosity at optical wavelengths, with no optical star visible to a limiting magnitude of V=25.5.

Observations of the trailing hemisphere of Io made with the Faint Object Spectrograph of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in March 1992 have resulted in the first detection of atmospheric SO2 absorption bands in the ultraviolet. These observations represent only the third positive means of detection of what is widely believed to be Io's primary atmospheric constituent. Below approximately 2130 A the geometric albedo of the satellite is dominated by SO2 gas absorption band signatures, which have been analyzed using models that include the effects of optical thickness, temperature, and spatial distribution. The disk-intergrated HST data cannot resolve the spatial distribution, but it is possible to define basic properties and set constraints on the atmosphere at the time of the observations. Hemispheric atmospheres with average column density N = 6 - 10 x 10(exp 15)/sq sm and T(gas) = 110 - 500 K fit the data, with preference for temperatures of approximately 200 - 250 K. Better fits are found as the atmosphere is spatially confined, with a limit of approximately 8% hemispheric areal coverage and N approximately equal to 3 x 10(exp 17)/sq cm with colder 110 - 250 K temepratures. A dense (N greater than or equal to 10(exp 16)/sq cm), localized component of SO2 gas, such as that possibly associated with active volcanoes, can generate the observed spectral constrast only when the atmosphere is cold (110 K) and an extended component such as Pele is included. The combination of a dense, localized atmosphere with a tenuous component (N less than 10(exp 16)/sq cm, either patchy or extended) also fits the data. In all cases the best fit models imply a disk-averaged column density larger than exospheric but approximately 10 - 30 times less than the previous upper limit from near-UV observations.

As part of both the Early Release Observations fromthe Hubble Space Telescope and the Key PRoject on the Extragalctic Distance Scale, we have obtained multi-wavelength BVR WFPC2 images for the face-on Virgo cluster spiral galaxy M11 = NGC 4321.

This paper provides an overview of the characteristics of the second Wide Field and Planetary Camera and some authors' perspectives of its first six months of operation on orbit.

An exceptional Jovian aurora was detected in the FUV on December 21, 1990, by means of Vilspa and Goddard Space Flight Center (GFSC) International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observations. This event included intensification by a factor of three between December 20 and 21, leading to the brightest aurora identified in the IUE data analyzed, and, in the north, to a shift of the emission peak towards larger longitudes. The Jovian radio emission simultaneously recorded at decameter wavelengths in Nancay also exhibits significant changes, from a weak and short-duration emission on December 20 to a very intense one, lasting several hours, on December 21. Confirmation of this intense radio event is also found in the observations at the University of Florida on December 21. The emissions are identified as right-handed Io-independent 'A' (or 'non Io-A') components from the northern hemisphere. The radio source region deduced from the Nancay observations lies, for both days, close to the UV peak emission, exhibiting in particular a similar shift of the source region toward larger longitudes from one day to the next. A significant broadening of the radio source was also observed and it is shown that on both days, the extent of the radio source closely followed the longitude range for which the UV brightness exceeds a given threshold. The correlated variations, both in intensity and longitude, strongly suggest that a common cause triggered the variation of the UV and radio emissions during this exceptional event. On one hand, the variation of the UV aurora could possibly be interpreted according to the Prange and Elkhamsi (1991) model of diffuse multicomponent auroral precipitation (electron and ion): it would arise from an increase in the precipitation rate of ions together with an inward shift of their precipitation locus from L approximately equal 10 to L approximately equal 6. On the other hand, the analysis of Ulysses observations in the upstream solar wind suggests that a significant disturbance in the solar wind, involving the generation of an interplanetary shock and the presence of a CME have interacted with the Jovian magnetosphere at about the time of the auroral event. Both arguments suggest that we may have observed for the first time a magnetic storm-type interaction in an outer planet magnetosphere, affecting simultaneously several auroral processes. Conversely, the observed relationship between the level of UV auroral activity and the detection of decameter emission (DAM), if it were a typical feature, might argue in favour of a more direct and permanent association between the auroral processes leading to UV and radio aurorae, possibly related to 'discrete-arc'-like activity and electron precipitation.

The detection of H3(+) in Uranus is reported. Using the CGS4 spectrometer on the UKIRT telescope, we clearly detected 11 emission features of the H3(+) fundamental vibration-rotation band between 3.89 and 4.09 microns. These features are composed primarily of lines from the Q-branch; the strongest of them is the Q(3) blend at 3.985 microns. Analysis of these features indicates a rotational temperature of 740 +/- 25 K, an ortho-H3(+) fraction of 0.51 +/- 0.03, and a disk-averaged H3(+) column abundance of 6.5 x 10 exp 10 (+/- 10 percent) molecules/sq cm. Comparison is made with Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune. A detection of the H2 1-0 S(1) line in Uranus and an upper limit to H3(+) emission from Neptune also are reported. The rate of energy deposition into Uranus appears to be significantly higher than the rate reported during the Voyager 2 flyby in January of 1986.

IUE observations of H2 UV emissions for the 1981-1991 period are presently used to investigate the auroral brightness distribution on the surface of Jupiter. The brightness, which is diagnostic of energy input to the atmosphere as well as of magnetospheric processes, is determined by comparing model-predicted brightnesses against empirical ones. The north and south aurorae appear to be correlated in brightness and in variations of the longitude of peak brightness. There are strong fluctuations in all the parameters of the brightness distribution on much shorter time scales than those of solar maximum-minimum.

Since H3+ was first spectroscopically detected on Jupiter, there has been considerable interest in using this simple molecular ion to probe conditions existing in the planet's auroral regions. Here we present a series of images of Jupiter recorded at wavelengths sensitive to emission by H3+, which reveal the spatial distribution of excited H3+ molecular ions in the jovian ionosphere, as seen from Earth. We believe that they provide high-spatial-resolution images of polar aurorae on Jupiter. They suggest that the intensity of the auroral emission can vary on a timescale of an hour, a shorter period than had previously been noted. We also find that the spatial distribution of H3+ emissions correlates only partially with the loci of auroral activity inferred from ultraviolet and longer-wavelength infrared observations. The H3+ emission may therefore be controlled by auroral processes that are different from those responsible for the ultraviolet and infrared emissions.

The IUE data set accumulated through 10 years of Jovian equatorial observations is used to measure the long-term temporal variation of the H2 dayglow emission. The model that best fits the data indicates a possible correlation between long-term solar activity and the Jovian H2 emission in the region 1500-1700 A between 1978 and 1989, which spans the decline in solar activity for solar cycle 21 and the rise in solar activity accompanying solar cycle 22. The magnitude of the observed variation is closer to that of the solar Ly-alpha flux than the 10.7 cm radio flux. Short-wavelength H2 band emission intensity is inconsistent with the amount of long-wavelength emission but may be reconciled if relatively low-energy excitation or fluorescence of solar radiation is invoked. No persistent longitudinal feature analogous to the H I Ly-alpha can be identified.

IUE spectra of Jupiter are examined in light of recent models put forward to explain the anomalously bright ultraviolet emissions seen from the upper atmospheres of the outer planets. Chi-squared fits of the IUE spectra with model spectra produced by two proposed excitation mechanisms, electron impact and fluorescence of solar radiation, result in consistently higher chi-squared values for the solar fluorescence model. No conclusive evidence is found in the IUE data for the dominance of solar fluorescence over electron excitation in producing the Jovian dayglow emission.

Two of the main components of the atmosphere of Io, neutral oxygen and sulfur, were detected with the IUE. Four observations yield brightnesses that are similar, regardless of whether the upstream or the downstream sides of the torus plasma flow around Io is observed. A simple model requires the emissions to be produced by the interaction of O and S columns in the exospheric range with 2 eV electrons. Cooling of the 5 eV torus electrons is required prior to their interaction with the atmosphere of Io. Inconsistencies in the characteristics of the spectra that cannot be accounted for in this model require further analysis with improved atomic data. The Io plasma torus was monitored with the IUE. The long-term stability of the warm torus is established. The observed brightnesses were analyzed using a model of the torus, and variations of less than 30 percent in the composition are observed, the quantitative results being model dependent.

Ninety two IUE observations of the Jovian equatorial region taken between 2 Dec. 1978 and 1 Feb. 1988 were averaged together by date of observation, resulting in 22 averaged spectra which were fit with a model to determine the amount of H2 Lyman band emission in the region 1552 to 1624A. The data suggest that the H2 emission may vary with time. Especially suggestive is the marked downward trend of the emission between 1983 and 1987, during which time the strength of the emission in the 1552 to 1624A region decreases by a factor of 10. Uncertainty in the existing data and a gap in the data in 1980 and 1981 preclude a positive identification of a correlation between the brightness of the H2 emission and the major solar cycle.

The results of long-term monitoring of the Jovian Lyman-alpha brightness with the IUE are presented. The measurements span the current solar cycle from maximum in late 1979 to the present period of minimum solar activity. The long-term variation seen in the brightness during the declining phase of the cycle matches the decrease in the solar Lyman-alpha flux during this period and is significantly smaller than the variability implied by Pioneer 10 for the first half of the cycle. The hydrogen bulge, a region of enhanced and variable Lyman-alpha emission located near magnetic longitude 100 deg, has been a persistent feature of the Jovian upper atmosphere throughout the eight-year period of the observations, and the average bulge intensity has also followed the solar cycle decrease in Lyman-alpha. Implications for the Jovian upper atmosphere and the electroglow phenomenon on Jupiter during the observational period are discussed.

IUE spectra have shown several O I and S I emissions near Io. The optical thickness of the S I 1814 A multiplet indicates that the S column density is greater than about 2 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm. The presence of an S I 1479 A feature suggests that electron collisions with SO2 could be a major source of the emissions. It is likely that particle excitation in the denser collision-dominated part of the atmosphere is also responsible for a substantial part of the observed emissions.
