13. Correlates of Peer Classroom Connectedness among Undergraduate Women in STEM

- Abstract
Women are underrepresented in physical science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (pSTEM) at the undergraduate level and beyond, and there is mounting evidence that such disparities are driven by cultural and environmental influences. This study explored one underresearched environmental context--perceptions of peer connectedness within the STEM classroom--and its concurrent and longitudinal relations with outcomes of importance for undergraduate women in pSTEM, including academic major self-efficacy, belongingness in their major, belongingness at the university, STEM interests, and course grade. First- and second-year women (N = 258) who were interested in majoring in a pSTEM field self-selected to participate in a longitudinal study across two semesters. Students' perceptions of peer connectedness in their STEM classroom had positive concurrent and longitudinal relations with academic self-efficacy, major belonging, and university belonging (but not interest in STEM or course grade). In longitudinal analyses that controlled for earlier levels of the outcome variables, perceived peer connectedness in the classroom was also associated with greater feelings of belonging in the major the following semester, but not with self-efficacy, university belonging, or STEM interest. These results suggest that, by fostering connections among students in the classroom, instructors may be able to increase women STEM students' broader sense of belonging within their majors.

Health care industry - Abstract
Introduction Breastfeeding has significant health benefits for infants and birthing persons, including reduced risk of chronic disease. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusively breastfeeding infants for 6 months and recently extended its recommendation for continuing to breastfeed with supplementation of solid foods from one to two years. Studies consistently identify lower breastfeeding rates among US infants, with regional and demographic variability. We examined breastfeeding in birthing person-infant pairs among healthy, term pregnancies enrolled in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study between 2010 and 2017 (n = 1176). Methods Birthing persons 18-45 years old were enrolled during prenatal care visits at ~ 24-28 weeks gestation and have been followed since enrollment. Breastfeeding status was obtained from postpartum questionnaires. Birthing person and infant health and sociodemographic information was abstracted from medical records and prenatal and postpartum questionnaires. We evaluated the effects of birthing person age, education, relationship status, pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain (GWG), smoking and parity, and infant sex, ponderal index, gestational age and delivery mode on breastfeeding initiation and duration using modified Poisson and multivariable linear regression. Results Among healthy, term pregnancies, 96% of infants were breastfed at least once. Only 29% and 28% were exclusively breastfed at 6-months or received any breastmilk at 12-months, respectively. Higher birthing person age, education, and parity, being married, excessive GWG, and older gestational age at delivery were associated with better breastfeeding outcomes. Smoking, obesity, and cesarean delivery were negatively associated with breastfeeding outcomes. Conclusions Given the public health importance of breastfeeding for infants and birthing persons, interventions are needed to support birthing persons to extend their breastfeeding duration., Author(s): Kathryn A. Quantitative Biology - Other Quantitative Biology - Abstract
We present an open source model that allows quantitative prediction of the effects of testing on the rate of spread of COVID-19 described by R, the reproduction number, and on the degree of quarantine, isolation and lockdown required to limit it. The paper uses the model to quantify the outcomes of different test types and regimes, and to identify strategies and tests that can reduce the rate of spread and R value by a factor of between 1.67 and 33.3, reducing it to between 60% and 3% of the initial value., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, in English

38. Demanding Space for Equity in the Assessment of Student Learning
- Author
-
Jankowski, Natasha A. and Baker, Gianina R.
- Abstract
According to the authors, to infuse equity truly in assessment requires that students be actively involved in the process of assessing their own learning. Equitable assessment argues that students can demonstrate attainment of learning outcomes in many ways, and in any particular instance of assessment, students can be offered multiple ways to demonstrate learning. Equitable assessment requires interrogation of student learning data coupled with intentional examination of assumptions on how and where students learn. The National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment supported space for exploring the relationship between equity and assessment of student learning with a variety of resources. In this article, they provide a framework for students and culture in assessment designed to ensure the practice and process of assessment itself became more culturally responsive. To do such work, the framework proposed that faculty and staff do the following: (1) take into account the student population served by the institution in the design of assessment approaches; (2) use language that is appropriate for all students when developing learning outcomes, such that the learning outcomes have meaning to students and not just the faculty and staff that wrote them; (3) develop and/or use assessments that are appropriate for different students whether through assignment design or alternative approaches to traditional assessments; and (4) disaggregate and interrogate assessment results and assumptions about changes that faculty and staff believe may lead to improvements in student learning.

39. Using Model Essays in Conjunction with Noticing as a Feedback Instrument in IELTS Writing Preparation
- Author

- Abstract
This study investigated the effects of using IELTS model essays in conjunction with noticing as a feedback instrument on Vietnamese undergraduates' IELTS Task 2 writing performance. To investigate this, a quasi-experimental design was undertaken. The control group used the course textbook and received traditional writing feedback (i.e. direct, indirect, and peer feedback), which they drew on while composing their second drafts. Conversely, the experimental group utilized IELTS model essays in conjunction with noticing as a feedback instrument to compose their second drafts. To compare each group's writing gains, pretest and posttest writing samples were evaluated using the IELTS Task 2 rubric's overall and four subscale band scores. The data were analyzed using inferential statistics (paired-samples t-test, independent-samples t-test). The results indicated that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in all areas. As prior research specific to using IELTS model essays in conjunction with noticing as a feedback instrument with IELTS Writing Task 2 in the Vietnamese postsecondary context is noticeably absent, this paper is offered as a starting point for future investigations and discussions. The paper also discusses the topic and results' relevancy to the larger Asian context and poses suggestions for further study.

- Abstract
Stronger connections are needed between employers and higher education, however, questions abound about how best to work in partnership. Stemming from various conversations with members of the higher education and employer communities, this Occasional Paper provides tips for fostering successful partnerships and collaboration. Three lessons learned from successful employer and higher education partnerships are introduced: the importance of context, tips for sparking conversation between faculty and employers, and which questions to ask one another to find common values and deeper understanding. We hope you consider some of the tips and possible conversation foci presented in this guide as you engage in relationship building and find them useful in your employer partnerships. 41. Documenting Learning: The Comprehensive Learner Record. Occasional Paper No. 46

- Abstract
Traditionally, transcripts present a collection of lists of courses and grades in a format valuable for trading information between and among institutions of higher education. What if transcripts were reimagined to not only provide information on credits earned, but also provide information on learning acquired both inside and outside the classroom? What if the transcript documented learning in a digital portable record, regardless of where the learning took place or was acquired? Beginning from a partnership between the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and NASPA: Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the work to develop Comprehensive Learner Records (CLR) sought to address these questions with the help of a group of pilot institutions. The National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) provided professional development support to the pilot institutions as the pilot participants mapped learning and identified assessments of learning from both within and outside of the classroom for inclusion in a formal record. This occasional paper provides an overview of the Comprehensive Learner Record as well as connection points to assessment.

42. Mapping and Assessing Student Learning in Student Affairs. Occasional Paper No. 45

- Abstract
This Occasional Paper outlines lessons learned about mapping and assessing learning in student affairs and student employment. Over the last three years, the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) assisted institutions developing Comprehensive Learner Records and scaling high-impact practices. In each of these initiatives, mapping of learning, redesigning assessments, and creating assignments was a staple of practice. Further, assessment practitioners were reminded that before staff jump into implementing assessment and writing the perfect learning outcome statement with just the right verb, time is needed to think about what is being built, why, how, and which students are best served by it all. The discussion centered upon: What is the role of student affairs as part of a larger system of interlocking and supporting learning for students throughout an institution that builds towards common or shared learning outcomes? This resource provides inroads to such discussions, and offers resources to inform practice and for use in institutional professional development.

43. An Exploration of How Interest Contributes to the Readability of Writing Center Self-Access Materials
- Author

Baker, John R.
- Abstract
The idea that genre-specific reading benefits apprenticing writers is a concept that the field of teaching writing values as an underlying constant. Following this, writing center directors select rhetorics (anthologies of writing exemplars) for their self-access library shelves from the over 200 rhetorics presently in print. To choose these texts, quantitative readability formulae (e.g., the Lexile Readability Formula) are often employed. However, such formulae only measure two (i.e., semantic, syntactic) of the many features that impact readability. Other important features that require qualitative exploration are not considered (e.g., interest). To address this, this article reports the findings of a sequential, mixed-methods study conducted in a Taiwanese university writing center setting. The study found that interest influences the readability of rhetorics both as (a) a primary (i.e., an isolated feature) and (b) a conjoined feature (i.e., consisting of two or more associated entities where the second impacts the first). The article also makes a recommendation for teachers, writing center staff, and the publishing industry that interest be considered when considering the difficulty of exemplars in rhetorics.

44. Using Joycean Narrative Inquiry to Historically Explore the Language Use of One Community of Practice in South Korea
- Author
-
Baker, John R.
- Abstract
This paper, through the use of Joycean narrative inquiry, offers a qualitative narrative analysis of two types of language input the South Korean community was exposed to when the doors opened to a large number of western teachers in 1993 (i.e., General American and Received Pronunciation). Specifically, this paper provides examples of lexical choice and quotes from two groups of teachers at this time (i.e., American and British). This analysis is accomplished through a reflective narrative drawn from the style found in a story in Joyce's The Dubliners (i.e., The Dead), where groups are personified into characters, and the events of one day are presented as representative of each groups' people and their language use. Using this technique, this paper reports that the representative of each group held fast to his/her individual varieties to preserve identity. This paper also found that each representative used acts of convergence to reduce social distance. Noting that narrative inquiry is an emerging, recognized, and widely used area in the field but that the use of Joycean narrative inquiry is underrepresented, this reflection provides both a historical perspective and a starting point for future examinations of non-native speaker (NNS) communities' present use of English. Specifically, investigations into what influences such historical examples have had on present language use. Regarding the lack of research using this instrument, this paper is also offered as a starting point for the use of Joycean narrative inquiry as a research instrument in TESOL and its related fields.
