PurposeThis article investigates the role of schemas in shaping customer experiences in new servicescapes, across the customer journey. The authors take a customer perspective that reveals how schematic information processing takes place at four pyramidal levels—event, touchpoint, encounter and concrete activities—that in turn lead to customer responses.Design/methodology/approachThe study introduces a novel ethnographic schema elicitation technique (ESET), which enables unraveling schemas at the touchpoint level across the customer journey of a European grocery store that recently launched a new SST innovation. This tailored approach provides fine-grained insights into customer experiences at the moment they occur.FindingsThe conceptual framework unravels schematic information processing, as illustrated with an empirical study. The activation of different schemas and their modification is highlighted in rich qualitative data.Research limitations/implicationsInnovative service offerings require customers to adapt their existing behaviors. Understanding this highly individual process, which requires schema modification, could be furthered by longitudinal in-depth research.Practical implicationsBy understanding schematic information processing, managers and policymakers can develop better strategies for activating sustainability or health-conscious schemas that guide customer behavior in positive directions.Originality/valueBy applying ESET to new self-service technology, the authors provide valuable insights for service managers and retailers. They show the particular need for prudence in changing schemas in ways that avoid negative cognitive, emotional or behavioral responses.

The risk-balancing hypothesis (RBH) suggests that farms will take less business risk as theirfinancial risk increases, but existing literature provides empirical evidence that the RBH mightbe invalid under certain circumstances. We present a unified model that explains the conditionsunder which the RBH holds or is invalidated by recognizing the role of latent heterogeneity amongfarms. We generalize the RBH idea and trace the source of credit risk back to latent heterogeneityamong farms. We then apply recent literature to longitudinal data from a panel of Dutch farmsand classify segments using a finite mixture regression fixed-effects model and find that the RBHmay not apply to all groups in the same way.

espanolEste trabajo profundiza en el estudio de los factores que influyen en la competitividad internacional de las nuevas empresas internacionales y, en consecuencia, en su resultado internacional. Aunando las disciplinas del emprendedurismo y del marketing internacional, se trata de remarcar la importancia del conocimiento relacional a traves de la influencia de la orientacion al mercado de la red en los resultados internacionales logrados por estas empresas en base al efector mediador de las ventajas competitivas. Los resultados obtenidos del contraste de hipotesis, mediante modelos de ecuaciones estructurales y analisis multi-muestra, confirman que la orientacion al mercado de la red resulta determinante en la obtencion de resultados internacionales superiores por parte de las nuevas empresas. Esta influencia se produce de forma indirecta a partir del efecto mediador de las ventajas competitivas en diferenciacion y costes desarrolladas por las mismas. Este estudio extiende la investigacion pasada en torno al emprendedurismo internacional, incluyendo nuevas aportaciones propias de la disciplina del marketing respecto a los antecedentes de la competitividad y los resultados de las nuevas empresas internacionales en los mercados exteriores. Ademas, los resultados obtenidos animan a emprendedores en el contexto internacional a considerar el valor explicito de otros factores distintos al conocimiento experiencial, que la empresa adquiere de forma gradual conforme se incrementa su experiencia en el mercado exterior, para darse cuenta del valor potencial que el conocimiento relacional asociado a la orientacion al mercado de la red tiene como antecedente para la consecucion de ventajas competitivas en el mercado internacional. EnglishThis paper delves into the study of the factors that influence the international competitive position of international new ventures, and consequently, their international performance. By combining international entrepreneurship and marketing disciplines, this work attempts to emphasise the importance of relational knowledge by the influence of network market orientation on the international results obtained by these firms through the mediating effect of competitive advantages. The approach was used to test our hypotheses. The results obtained, using structural equations models and multi-sample analysis, confirm that network market orientation is a determining factor for new ventures to achieve superior international results. This influence is observed indirectly with the mediating effect on the differentiation- and cost-based competitive advantages developed by these firms. This study extends previous international entrepreneurship research, including insights from the marketing discipline on antecedents of international new ventures’ competitiveness and success in foreign markets. In addition, the results obtained encourage entrepreneurs in the international context to consider the explicit value of other factors different from experiential knowledge, which the company acquired gradually with increasing its experience in the foreign market, to realize the potential value of relational knowledge associated to network market orientation as an antecedent for the achievement of competitive advantages in the international market.

espanolEste estudio analiza la relacion entre el tamano del consejo de administracion y el rendimiento economico-financiero de una muestra de empresas europeas que componen el EUROSTOXX50. Revisando trabajos anteriores en la materia y teniendo en cuenta ademas de la teoria de dependencia de recursos y la teoria de la agencia, la regulacion que se ha desarrollado desde la OCDE, la Union Europea, y la relativa al gobierno corporativo de cada pais de la muestra, los autores proponen la existencia de una relacion positiva entre las dos ideas investigadas. Tomando en consideracion el numero de consejeros y varias medidas del rendimiento economico-financiero (ROA, ROE y Q de Tobin), se realiza la estimacion estadistica y ante la ausencia de resultados significativos se infiere la existencia de factores adicionales, como el tamano empresarial, influyentes en la relacion. Indagando en este otro factor se llega a una importante conclusion: el hecho de que existe una fuerte y negativa relacion entre el tamano de la compania y el correspondiente rendimiento financiero. Por tanto, se puede aseverar que la recomendacion generica “un tamano vale para todo” en este estudio no es aplicable, lo que, por otro lado, va en consonancia con las recomendaciones de la Union Europea que desaconsejan modelos genericos para todos los paises integrantes. EnglishThis study analyzes the relationship between board size and economic-financial performance in a sample of European firms that constitute the EUROSTOXX50 Index. Based on previous literature, resource dependency and agency theories, and considering regulation developed by the OECD and European Union on the normative of corporate governance for each country in the sample, the authors propose the hypotheses of both positive linear and quadratic relationships between the researched parameters. Using ROA as a benchmark of financial performance and the number of members of the board as measurement of the board size, two OLS estimations are performed. To confirm the robustness of the results the empirical study is tested with two other similar financial ratios, ROE and Tobin’s Q. Due to the absence of significant results, an additional factor, firm size, is employed in order to check if it affects firm performance. Delving further into the nature of this relationship, it is revealed that there exists a strong and negative relation between firm size and financial performance. Consequently, it can be asseverated that the generic recommendation “one size fits all” cannot be applied in this case; which conforms to the Recommendations of the European Union that dissuade using generic models for all countries.

[ES] Recientemente estudios previos han comenzado a plantear la posible relación entre el fenómeno de la internacionalización y responsabilidad social corporativa de las organizaciones. En este trabajo analizamos en qué medida la internacionalización contribuye a una mejora sustancial del desempeño social de las empresas. Usando una muestra de 102 empresas estadounidenses de los sectores químico, energético y de maquinaria industrial, nuestros resultados muestran que no todas las dimensiones de la internacionalización permiten a las empresas adquirir conocimiento valioso que conduzca a una mejora de su desempeño social. Concretamente, comprobamos que, mientras el porcentaje de ventas en mercados extranjeros y la diversificación internacional cultural favorecen la puesta en marcha de prácticas de responsabilidad social corporativa avanzadas que redundan en un mejor desempeño social (cumpliendo con las demandas sociales de los grupos de interés de los distintos mercados donde operan), la diversificación internacional geográfica no tiene efecto directo en el desempeño social de las empresas. Por tanto, no es tan importante el número de mercados donde la empresa actúa, sino el grado de diferenciación cultural existente entre los mismos lo que hace que la propia empresa mejore su desempeño social. El presente trabajo incluye implicaciones relevantes para el mundo académico, directivos y reguladores públicos. [EN] Recently, previous literature has paid special attention to study the relationship between firm internationalization and corporate social responsibility. In this research we examine the impact of internationalization on corporate social performance. Using a sample of 102 U.S. firms from the chemical, energy and industrial machinery industries, our results show that not all the dimensions of internationalization lead firms to enhance their level of social performance. Specifically, we can see that, whereas percentage of sales in foreign markets and cultural international diversification help firms to improve their level of social performance (complying with the different stakeholders social needs in each country where they operate), geographical international diversification is not related to corporate social performance. Thus, the number of geographical areas is not an important issue, but the degree of cultural international diversification between these areas what really influences firms corporate social performance. We discuss important implications for academia, managers and policy-makers as well. [ES] En el actual contexto de la Sociedad del Conocimiento las instituciones de educación superior deben prestar una atención preferente a las nuevas demandas informativas de sus stakeholders. El objetivo de este trabajo será evidenciar la necesidad de que las universidades incorporen información sobre capital intelectual en su actual sistema de información contable. Para ello, se ha realizado un estudio empírico que permite conocer en qué medida los distintos usuarios de la información contable universitaria están demandando información relativa al capital intelectual para una adecuada toma de decisiones. Para el logro de este objetivo se elaboró un cuestionario que fue enviado a la totalidad de miembros integrantes de los Consejos Sociales de las universidades públicas españolas. Los resultados obtenidos a través de esta investigación muestran cuáles son los elementos intangibles sobre los que las universidades deberían suministrar información de cara a satisfacer las nuevas necesidades informativas de sus usuarios. [EN] In the current context of the so-called “Knowledge-based Economy” higher education institutions should give preferential attention to the new demands of stakeholders information. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the appropriateness of the universities incorporate information on intellectual capital in its current accounting information system. So, an empirical study has been designed to show the extent to which different accounting information users are demanding information on university intellectual capital for adequate decision making. To achieve this goal we designed a questionnaire that was sent to all members of the Social Councils in Spanish public universities. The results obtained from this research show a list of the intangible elements on which universities should provide information in order to satisfy the changing information needs of its users.

[EN] In the last decades, the topic of business ethics has attracted great interest at the academic and professional levels. Nowadays business ethics is being increasingly implemented as a necessary discipline in universities’ study plans on business management. Moreover, its importance is also evident according to the worldwide increase of organizations and/or institutions that have implemented ethics systems. However, some approaches thoroughly do not consider the importance and the need of an ethical behaviour and are still guiding the actions and the way of thinking of many academics and professionals led to consider that the only responsibility of business is limited just to profit maximization. After analyzing and debating the postulates of this line of thought, this paper concludes that the companies bear the responsibility of behaving ethically. This responsibility does not exclusively imply serving and being fair to its shareholders as the only actors to care about. Its fulfilment requires the recognition of other actors in scene, its stakeholders, to constitute a consistent basis on which companies can satisfactorily operate in the market. The implementation of an ethical management system (from now on EMS) can contribute to the generation of an ethical culture and to the improvement of the moral quality of the whole organization. As a consequence, together with the achievement of the desired Top Managers “best place to work”, the corporate reputation related to its stakeholders can be improved redounding in the value creation for the company., [ES] Durante las últimas décadas, la ética empresarial ha atraído un gran interés tanto a nivel académico como profesional. En la actualidad, la ética empresarial está siendo crecientemente implementada como disciplina necesaria en los planes de estudio sobre gestión empresarial de las universidades. Además, se evidencia su importancia con el incremento experimentado a nivel mundial de organizaciones e instituciones que han implementado sistemas de ética. Sin embargo, algunos enfoques de pensamiento que todavía se encuentran guiando las acciones y la forma de pensar de muchos académicos y profesionales no consideran la importancia y la necesidad de un comportamiento ético por entender que la única responsabilidad de la empresa se encuentra limitada a la maximización de beneficios. Después de analizar y debatir los postulados de esta línea de pensamiento, este trabajo concluye que las empresas tienen la responsabilidad de comportarse éticamente. Esta responsabilidad no implica exclusivamente servir y ser justo con los accionistas como los únicos actores sobre los que responsabilizarse sino el reconocer otros actores en escena, los grupos de interés, para construir una base sólida sobre la que las empresas puedan operar satisfactoriamente en el mercado. La implementación de un sistema de gestión ético (en adelante, SGE), puede contribuir a la generación de una cultura ética y a la mejora de la calidad moral de la organización. Como consecuencia, junto al tan anhelado "mejor lugar para trabajar" por parte de la Alta Dirección se puede mejorar la reputación frente a los grupos de interés, lo que redunda en la creación de valor para la empresa.

[EN] This research provides a useful framework for identifying a small firms’ propensity to engage in entrepreneurial orientation. We examine the impact of the Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) as a main resource and capability on small firm’ growth. The growth seems to come out as an important demonstration of the entrepreneurial orientation of small firms (Davidsson, 1989; Green and Brown, 1997; Janney and Gregory, 2006). Thus, this research builds on prior conceptual research that suggests a positive integration between entrepreneurial orientation and resource-based view. In the first instance, the research will focus on reviewing literature in the emerging area of entrepreneurial orientation as it applies to growth oriented small firms and resource-based view of the firm. Secondly, an empirical study was developed based on a stratified sample of small firms of manufacturing industry. Data were submitted to a multivariate statistical analysis and a linear regression model was performed in order to predict the influence of the resources and capabilities on small firms’ growth. In this sense, we consider the construct growth as a dependent variable and the ones relates with resources and capabilities (entrepreneur resources, firm resources, networks and EO) as independent variables. The research results suggest a set of resources and capabilities that promote the growth of the small firms. Also, the EO seems to have a predictive value on growth. Explaining variables related with resources and capabilities and EO were identified as essential in growth oriented small firms. It was still possible to conclude that the entrepreneurial firms which grew seem to have resources and develop more capabilities and take advantage in the search for those competences. This attitude reflects on the EO of the firm. This study has important implication for both researchers and practitioners. It highlights the necessity of firms to develop superior EO of all their members and also to invest on better resources and consequently superior capabilities as a way of reaching higher levels of growth. While previous authors have attempted to analyse certain aspects of this process (linkage between entrepreneurial orientation and growth), this research developed a framework that combines these and others factors (resource-based view) pertinent to growth oriented small firms. The results support the necessity to identify explicative variables of multiple levels to explain the growth of small firms. The adoption of an entrepreneurial orientation as an indispensable variable to the growth oriented small firms seems pertinent. [ES] Esta investigación, proporciona un marco útil para la identificación de la propensión de las pequeñas empresas a tomar una orientación emprendedora. Examinamos el impacto de la orientación emprendedora como principal recurso y capacidad del crecimiento de las pequeñas empresas. El crecimiento parece revelarse como una importante explicación de la orientación emprendedora de las pequeñas empresas (Davidsson, 1989; Green and Brown, 1997; Janney and Gregory, 2006). Así, esta investigación se basa en investigaciones conceptuales previas que sugieren una integración positiva entre la orientación emprendedora y el enfoque de recursos y capacidades. En primer lugar, la investigación se centrará en la revisión de la literatura emergente en la medida en que la orientación emprendedora es aplicada al crecimiento enfocado en las pequeñas empresas y el enfoque de recursos y capacidades de la empresa. En segundo lugar, se ha desarrollado un estudio empírico basado en una muestra estratificada de pequeñas empresas de la industria manufacturera. Los datos fueron sometidos a técnicas estadísticas multivariantes y se desarrolló un modelo de regresión lineal con el objetivo de predecir la influencia de los recursos y capacidades en el crecimiento de las pequeñas empresas. Para ello, consideramos el constructo crecimiento como variable dependiente y las variables relacionadas con los recursos y capacidades (recursos del empresario, recursos de la empresa, network y OE) como variables independientes. Los resultados de la investigación, sugieren un conjunto de recursos y capacidades que fomentan el crecimiento de las pequeñas empresas. Además, la OE parece tener un valor predictivo en el crecimiento. Las variables explicativas relacionadas con los recursos y capacidades y la OE fueron identificadas como esenciales en el crecimiento de las pequeñas empresas. Todavía era posible concluir que las empresas emprendedoras que crecieron, parecen tener recursos, desarrollar más capacidades y tomar una ventaja en la búsqueda de esas competencias. Esta actitud se refleja en la OE de la empresa. Este estudio tiene importantes implicaciones para investigadores y profesionales. Éste pone de relieve la necesidad de las empresas de desarrollar una mayor OE por todos sus miembros junto con la inversión en mejores recursos y consecuentemente mayores capacidades como una forma de alcanzar mayores niveles de crecimiento. Mientras autores anteriores han tratado de analizar ciertos aspectos de este proceso (relación entre orientación empresarial y crecimiento), esta investigación desarrolla un marco que combina estos y otros factores (enfoque de recursos y capacidades) relacionados con el crecimiento de pequeñas empresas. Los resultados muestran la necesidad de identificar variables explicativas de diversos niveles para explicar el crecimiento de las pequeñas empresas. La adopción de una orientación empresarial como variable indispensable para el crecimiento de las pequeñas empresas, parece ser adecuada.

[ES] El presente trabajo analiza la relación entre el control familiar y la credibilidad de los resultados contables. Utilizando un panel de datos de empresas españolas cotizadas no financieras para el período 1997-2003, los resultados alcanzados muestran que la credibilidad de la información contable de la empresa familiar es inferior a la de la no familiar. Asimismo, el incremento de los derechos de voto en manos del último propietario familiar incide negativamente en la credibilidad de sus resultados divulgados. Las únicas empresas en las que la naturaleza familiar incide positivamente en la credibilidad de la información contable son aquellas en las que el presidente del consejo de administración no pertenece a la familia controladora. [EN] This work examines the relationship between the family control and informativeness of accounting earnings in listed non-financial Spanish companies between 1997 and 2003. The results reveal a negative relationship between the family nature of the controlling shareholder and the credibility of accounting information. Moreover, as the level of voting rights in the hands of the family ultimate owner increases, the informativeness of earnings decreases. Only in family firms where the CEO is hired, the family nature affects positively on the informativeness of accounting earnings.

[ES] Las Pymes colombianas, al igual que las de América Latina, afrontan una serie de barreras para la exportación asociadas a la carencia de recursos y capacidades organizacionales y directivas, las cuales hacen que su permanencia en los mercados internacionales sea cuestionable. Al no superar tales barreras y mostrar una posición competitiva más fuerte difícilmente éstas podrán penetrar y sobrevivir en los mercados internacionales y aprovechar las grandes oportunidades que ofrece el mercado mundial. Especialmente, aquéllas que surgen como resultado de los acuerdos de integración y de los sistemas de preferencia suscritos y otorgados a Colombia. En este artículo se describen las características organizacionales, directivas, transaccionales y estratégicas de 63 Pymes industriales exportadoras colombianas, así como su percepción de los factores ambientales a lo largo de su proceso de desarrollo exportador. Los resultados revelan que estas Pymes se encuentran en la etapa inicial de su proceso de desarrollo exportador, por cuanto poseen poca experiencia y recursos comprometidos en sus actividades internacionales. Sin embargo, la experiencia, conocimiento y habilidades de sus directivos permiten suponer que las Pymes analizadas tiene el potencial para incrementar su penetración en el exterior, posibilitándoles hacer frente a la demanda potencial y evitando que éstas adopten una conducta marginal o una abstinencia hacia las exportaciones, tal como lo indican los autores. [EN] The Colombian SMEs, like those of Latin America, confront a series of barriers for the export associated to the deficiency of resources and organizational and directive capacities, which cause that their permanence in the international markets is questionable. When not overcoming such barriers and showing a competitive position these will not be able to penetrate and to survive in the international markets, taking great opportunities that the world-wide market offers. Especially, those that arise as a result of the agreements of integration and the subscribed and granted systems of preference to Colombia. This article describe the organizational, directive, strategic, and transactional characteristics of 63 Colombian SMEs and their perception of the environmental factors throughout their internationalization process. The results reveal that these SMEs are in the initial stage of their internationalization process, because they show little experience and resources in their international activities. Nevertheless, the experience, knowledge and abilities of their managers allow to suppose that the analyzed SMEs have the potential to increase their penetration in foreign markets, making possible to them to attending the potential demand and avoiding to adopt a marginal conduct or an abstinence towards the exports, as indicate the authors.

[ES] En el presente trabajo llevamos a cabo una delimitación del constructo implicación, para lo que nos introducimos en los siguientes aspectos: a) conocer el origen de su estudio, así como los diferentes marcos conceptuales de abordaje; b) eliminar posibles confusiones con otros conceptos (por ejemplo, entre la implicación y la motivación); c) conocer sus determinantes, dimensiones y consecuencias; d) abordar el debate existente en torno a su conceptualización así como la posible unión entre diferentes posturas. [EN] In this paper we contribute to specify the construct «involvement», including the following aspects: a) knowledge of its origin and the several theoretical frames to approach it; b) elimination of potential confusion over other constructs (such as that between involvement and motivation); c) knowledge of the determinants, dimensions and consequences of the construct involvement; d) knowledge of the debate dealing with its conceptualization and the possible joint of different points of view.

Nowadays due to the crisis, some government measures are aimed at reducing healthcare spending, affecting in some level or another the quality offered. Process management is said to be a useful tool for reducing healthcare costs by improving management without any additional economic investment. That is doing more with the same resources and without reducing the quality offered. In this study an empirical case of a Catalan hospital is presented. Overall, the usefulness of process management in the healthcare sector is shown and some tips are provided for those managers that want to implement this management system in their hospitals. This work is also interesting for those managers responsible for the National Healthcare System due to a big question is stated: what would happen if process management was implemented in the whole healthcare system?

In a two-stage delegation game model with Nash bargaining between a manager and an owner, an equivalence result is found between this game and Fershtman and Judd's strategic delegation game (Fershtman and Judd, 1987). Interestingly, although both games are equivalent in terms of profits under certain conditions, managers obtain greater rewards in the bargaining game. This results in a redistribution of profits between owners and managers. A. In recent years, the Quality Management Paradigm has successfully taken root in the European Union’s business environment. Quality management besides being a multivariate issue including matters from management and economics till engineering may be called a global knowledge in permanent bubbling.
