Search

PKS 1413+135 is one of the most peculiar blazars known. Its strange properties led to the hypothesis almost four decades ago that it is gravitationally lensed by a mass concentration associated with an intervening galaxy. It exhibits symmetric achromatic variability, a rare form of variability that has been attributed to gravitational milli-lensing. It has been classified as a BL Lac object, and is one of the rare objects in this class with a visible counterjet. BL Lac objects have jet axes aligned close to the line of sight. It has also been classified as a compact symmetric object, which have jet axes not aligned close to the line of sight. Intensive efforts to understand this blazar have hitherto failed to resolve even the questions of the orientation of the relativistic jet, and the host galaxy. Answering these two questions is important as they challenge our understanding of jets in active galactic nuclei and the classification schemes we use to describe them. We show that the jet axis is aligned close to the line of sight and PKS 1413+135 is almost certainly not located in the apparent host galaxy, but is a background object in the redshift range $0.247 < z < 0.5$. The intervening spiral galaxy at $z = 0.247$ provides a natural host for the putative lens responsible for symmetric achromatic variability and is shown to be a Seyfert 2 galaxy. We present rest-frame optical spectroscopic observations of 24 Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) at redshifts 1.7–4.6 with KECK/NIRES. Our targets are selected, based on their extreme red colors, to be the highest-luminosity sources from the WISE infrared survey. In 20 sources with well-detected emission, we fit the key [O iii], Hβ, Hα, [N ii], and [S ii] diagnostic lines to constrain physical conditions. Of the 17 targets with a clear detection of the [O iii]λ5007 Å emission line, 15 display broad blueshifted and asymmetric line profiles, with widths ranging from 1000 to 8000 km s−1 and blueshifts up to 3000 km s−1. These kinematics provide strong evidence for the presence of massive ionized outflows of up to , with a median of . As many as eight sources show optical emission line ratios consistent with vigorous star formation. Balmer-line star formation rates, uncorrected for reddening, range from 30 to 1300 , with a median of . Estimates of the SFR from Spectral Energy Distribution fitting of mid- and far-infrared photometry suggest significantly higher values. We estimate the central black hole masses to be of order , assuming the present-day relation. The bolometric luminosities and the estimated masses of the central black holes of these galaxies suggest that many of the active galactic nucleus-dominated Hot DOGs are accreting at or above their Eddington limit. The combination of ongoing star formation, massive outflows, and high Eddington ratios suggest Hot DOGs are a transitional phase in galaxy evolution.

The Frontier Fields are a director's discretionary time campaign with HST and the Spitzer Space Telescope to see deeper into the universe than ever before. The Frontier Fields combine the power of HST and Spitzer with the natural gravitational telescopes of massive high-magnification clusters of galaxies to produce the deepest observations of clusters and their lensed galaxies ever obtained. Six clusters - Abell 2744, MACSJ0416.1-2403, MACSJ0717.5+3745, MACSJ1149.5+2223, Abell S1063, and Abell 370 - were selected based on their lensing strength, sky darkness, Galactic extinction, parallel field suitability, accessibility to ground-based facilities, HST, Spitzer and JWST observability, and pre-existing ancillary data. These clusters have been targeted by the HST ACS/WFC and WFC3/IR with coordinated parallels of adjacent blank fields for over 840 HST orbits. The Spitzer Space Telescope has dedicated > 1000 hours of director's discretionary time to obtain IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 micron imaging to ~26.5, 26.0 ABmag 5-sigma point-source depths in the six cluster and six parallel Frontier Fields. The Frontier Field parallel fields are the second-deepest observations thus far by HST with ~29th ABmag 5-sigma point source depths in seven optical - near-infrared bandpasses. Galaxies behind the Frontier Field cluster lenses experience typical magnification factors of a few, with small regions near the critical curves magnified by factors 10-100. Therefore, the Frontier Field cluster HST images achieve intrinsic depths of ~30-33 magnitudes over very small volumes. Early studies of the Frontier Fields have probed galaxies fainter than any seen before during the epoch of reionization 6 < z < 10, mapped out the cluster dark matter to unprecedented resolution, and followed lensed transient events.

The Spitzer Space Telescope has identified a population of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z ~ 2 that may play an important role in the evolution of massive galaxies. We measure the stellar masses (M_*) of two populations of Spitzer-selected ULIRGs that have extremely red R – [24] colors (dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) and compare our results with submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs). One set of 39 DOGs has a local maximum in their mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest frame 1.6 μm associated with stellar emission ("bump DOGs"), while the other set of 51 DOGs have power-law mid-IR SEDs that are typical of obscured active galactic nuclei ("power-law DOGs"). We measure M_* by applying Charlot & Bruzual stellar population synthesis models to broadband photometry in the rest-frame ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared of each of these populations. Assuming a simple stellar population and a Chabrier initial mass function, we find that power-law DOGs and bump DOGs are on average a factor of 2 and 1.5 more massive than SMGs, respectively (median and inter-quartile M_* values for SMGs, bump DOGs, and power-law DOGs are log(M_*/M_☉) = 10.42^(+0.42)_(–0.36), 10.62^(+0.36)_(–0.32), and 10.71^(+0.40)_(–0.34), respectively). More realistic star formation histories drawn from two competing theories for the nature of ULIRGs at z ~ 2 (major merger versus smooth accretion) can increase these mass estimates by up to 0.5 dex. A comparison of our stellar masses with the instantaneous star formation rate (SFR) in these z ~ 2 ULIRGs provides a preliminary indication supporting high SFRs for a given M_*, a situation that arises more naturally in major mergers than in smooth accretion-powered systems.

Detailed analysis of the substructure of Lya nebulae can put important constraints on the physical mechanisms at work and the properties of galaxies forming within them. Using high resolution HST imaging of a Lya nebula at z~2.656, we have taken a census of the compact galaxies in the vicinity, used optical/near-infrared colors to select system members, and put constraints on the morphology of the spatially-extended emission. The system is characterized by (a) a population of compact, low luminosity (~0.1 L*) sources --- 17 primarily young, small (Re~1-2 kpc), disky galaxies including an obscured AGN --- that are all substantially offset (>20 kpc) from the line-emitting nebula; (b) the lack of a central galaxy at or near the peak of the Lya emission; and (c) several nearly coincident, spatially extended emission components --- Lya, HeII, and UV continuum --- that are extremely smooth. These morphological findings are difficult to reconcile with theoretical models that invoke outflows, cold flows, or resonant scattering, suggesting that while all of these physical phenomena may be occurring, they are not sufficient to explain the powering and large extent of Lya nebulae. In addition, although the compact galaxies within the system are irrelevant as power sources, the region is significantly overdense relative to the field galaxy population (by at least a factor of 4). We present mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 16 optically faint infrared luminous galaxies obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. These sources were jointly selected from Spitzer and Chandra imaging surveys in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey Boötes field and were selected from their bright X-ray fluxes to host luminous AGNs. None of the spectra show significant emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; 6.2 μm equivalent widths

We present the redshift distribution of a complete, unbiased sample of 24 micron sources down to fnu(24 micron) = 300 uJy (5-sigma). The sample consists of 591 sources detected in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We have obtained optical spectroscopic redshifts for 421 sources (71%). These have a redshift distribution peaking at z~0.3, with a possible additional peak at z~0.9, and objects detected out to z=4.5. The spectra of the remaining 170 (29%) exhibit no strong emission lines from which to determine a redshift. We develop an algorithm to estimate the redshift distribution of these sources, based on the assumption that they have emission lines but that these lines are not observable due to the limited wavelength coverage of our spectroscopic observations. The redshift distribution derived from all 591 sources exhibits an additional peak of extremely luminous (L(8-1000 micron) > 3 x 10^{12} Lsun) objects at z~2, consisting primarily of sources without observable emission lines. We use optical line diagnostics and IRAC colors to estimate that 55% of the sources within this peak are AGN-dominated. We compare our results to published models of the evolution of infrared luminous galaxies. We present mid-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope of a sample of 11 optically faint, infrared luminous galaxies selected from a Spitzer MIPS 70um imaging survey of the NDWFS Bootes field. These are the first Spitzer IRS spectra presented of distant 70um-selected sources. All the galaxies lie at redshifts 0.3, Comment: 8 Pages, ApJ accepted

We report on an investigation of the SBS 1520+530 gravitational lens system and its environment using archival HST imaging, Keck spectroscopic data, and Keck adaptive-optics imaging. The AO imaging has allowed us to fix the lens galaxy properties with a high degree of precision when performing the lens modeling, and the data indicate that the lens has an elliptical morphology and perhaps a disk. The new spectroscopic data suggest that previous determinations of the lens redshift may be incorrect, and we report an updated, though inconclusive, value z_lens = 0.761. We have also spectroscopically confirmed the existence of several galaxy groups at approximately the redshift of the lens system. We create new models of the lens system that explicitly account for the environment of the lens, and we also include improved constraints on the lensing galaxy from our adaptive-optics imaging. Lens models created with these new data can be well-fit with a steeper than isothermal mass slope (alpha = 2.29, with the density proportional to r^-alpha) if H_0 is fixed at 72 km/s/Mpc; isothermal models require H_0 ~ 50 km/s/Mpc. We discuss color selection of rare objects in a wide-field, multiband survey spanning from the optical to the mid-infrared. Simple color criteria simultaneously identify and distinguish two of the most sought after astrophysical sources: the coolest brown dwarfs and the most distant quasars. We present spectroscopically-confirmed examples of each class identified in the IRAC Shallow Survey of the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. ISS J142950.9+333012 is a T4.5 brown dwarf at a distance of approximately 42 pc, and ISS J142738.5+331242 is a radio-loud quasar at redshift z=6.12. Our selection criteria identify a total of four candidates over 8 square degrees of the Bootes field. We explore the relationships between the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) feature strengths, mid-infrared continuum luminosities, far-infrared spectral slopes, optical spectroscopic classifications, and silicate optical depths within a sample of 107 ULIRGs observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The detected 6.2 micron PAH equivalent widths (EQWs) in the sample span more than two orders of magnitude (0.006-0.8 micron), and ULIRGs with HII-like optical spectra or steep far-infrared spectral slopes (S_{25} / S_{60} < 0.2) typically have 6.2 micron PAH EQWs that are half that of lower-luminosity starbursts. A significant fraction (~40-60%) of HII-like, LINER-like, and cold ULIRGs have very weak PAH EQWs. Many of these ULIRGs also have large (tau_{9.7} > 2.3) silicate optical depths. The far-infrared spectral slope is strongly correlated with PAH EQW, but not with silicate optical depth. In addition, the PAH EQW decreases with increasing rest-frame 24 micron luminosity. We argue that this trend results primarily from dilution of the PAH EQW by continuum emission from dust heated by a compact central source, probably an AGN. High luminosity, high-redshift sources studied with Spitzer appear to have a much larger range in PAH EQW than seen in local ULIRGs, which is consistent with extremely luminous starburst systems being absent at low redshift, but present at early epochs., 15 pages, 9 Figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5-38 micron region of the ten Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) found in the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample. Among the BGS ULIRGs, we find a factor of 50 spread in the rest-frame mid to far-infrared spectral slope. The 9.7 micron silicate optical depths range from less than 0.4 more than 4.2, implying line of sight extinctions of A(V) ~ 8 - 78 mag. There is evidence for water ice and hydrocarbon absorption and C2H2 and HCN absorption features in four and possibly six of the 10 BGS ULIRGs, indicating shielded molecular clouds and a warm, dense ISM. We have detected [NeV] emission in three of the ten BGS ULIRGs, at flux levels of 5-18E-14 erg/cm^2/sec and [NeV] 14.3/[NeII] 12.8 line flux ratios of 0.12-0.85. The remaining BGS ULIRGs have limits on their [NeV]/[NeII] line flux ratios which range from less than 0.15 to less than 0.01. Among the BGS ULIRGs, the AGN fractions implied by either the [NeV]/[NeII] or [OIV]/[NeII] line flux ratios (or their upper limits) are significantly lower than implied by the MIR slope or EQW of the 6.2 micron PAH feature. Fitting the SEDs, we see evidence for hot (T > 300K) dust in five of the BGS ULIRGs, with the fraction of hot dust to total dust luminosity ranging from ~1-23%, before correcting for extinction. When integrated over the IRAC-8, IRS blue peakup, and MIPS-24 filter bandpasses, the IRS spectra imply very blue colors for some ULIRGs at z ~ 1.3. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Spitzer Space Telescope (formerly the Space Infrared Telescope Facility) is the fourth and final facility in the Great Observatories Program, joining Hubble Space Telescope (1990), the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (1991–2000), and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory (1999). Spitzer, with a sensitivity that is almost three orders of magnitude greater than that of any previous ground-based and space-based infrared observatory, is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the creation of the universe, the formation and evolution of primitive galaxies, the origin of stars and planets, and the chemical evolution of the universe. This review presents a brief overview of the scientific objectives and history of infrared astronomy. We discuss Spitzer’s expected role in infrared astronomy for the new millennium. We describe pertinent details of the design, construction, launch, in-orbit checkout, and operations of the observatory and summarize some science highlights from the first two and a half years of Spitzer operations. We have conducted a survey of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope, obtaining spectra from 5.0 to 38.5 μm for 77 sources with 0.02 < z < 0.93. Observations of the pure rotational H_2 lines S(3) 9.67 μm, S(2) 12.28 μm, and S(1) 17.04 μm are used to derive the temperature and mass of the warm molecular gas. We detect H2 in 77% of the sample, and all ULIRGs with F_(60 μm) > 2 Jy. The average warm molecular gas mass is ~2 × 10^8 M_☉. High extinction, inferred from the 9.7 μm silicate absorption depth, is not observed along the line of sight to the molecular gas. The derived H_2 mass does not depend on F_(25 μm)/F_(60 μm), which has been used to infer either starburst or AGN dominance. Similarly, the molecular mass does not scale with the 25 or 60 μm luminosities. In general, the H_2 emission is consistent with an origin in photodissociation regions associated with star formation. We detect the S(0) 28.22 μm emission line in a few ULIRGs. Including this line in the model fits tends to lower the temperature by ~50-100 K, resulting in a significant increase in the gas mass. The presence of a cooler component cannot be ruled out in the remainder of our sample, for which we do not detect the S(0) line. The measured S(7) 5.51 μm line fluxes in six ULIRGs implies ~3 × 10^6 M_☉ of hot (~1400 K) H_2. The warm gas mass is typically less than 1% of the cold gas mass derived from ^(12)CO observations.

We present the reduction of the 24 micron data obtained during the first cosmological survey performed by the Spitzer Space Telescope (First Look Survey, FLS). The survey consists of a shallow observation of 2.5x2 sq deg centered at 17h18m +59d30m (main survey) and a deeper observation of 1x0.5 sq deg centered at 17h17m +59d45m(verification survey). Issues with the reduction of the 24 micron MIPS data are discussed and solutions to attenuate instrumental effects are proposed and applied to the data. Approximately 17000 sources are extracted with a SNR greater than five. The photometry of the point sources is evaluated through PSF fitting using an empirical PSF derived from the data. Aperture corrections and the absolute calibration have been checked using stars in the field. Astrometric and photometric errors depend on the SNR of the source varying between 0.35-1 arcsec and 5-15%, respectively, for sources detected at 20-5 sigma. The flux of the 123 extended sources have been estimated through aperture photometry. The extended sources cover less than 0.3% of the total area of the survey. Based on simulations, the main and verification surveys are 50% complete at 0.3 and 0.15 mJy, respectively. Counterparts have been searched for in optical and radio catalogs. More than 80% of the 24 micron sources have a reliable optical counterpart down to R=25.5. 16% of the sources have a 20 cm counterpart down to 0.1 mJy and ~ 80% of the radio-infrared associations have a reliable optical counterpart. A residual map is obtained by subtracting point sources detected at the 3-sigma level and interpolating the regions occupied by extended sources. In order to examine the relative importance of powerful starbursts and Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in NGC 6240, we have obtained mid-infrared images and low-resolution spectra of the galaxy with subarcsecond spatial resolution using the Keck telescopes. Despite the high spatial resolution (~200 pc) of our data, no signature of the hidden AGNs has been detected in the mid-infrared. The southern nucleus, which we show provides 80%–90% of the total 8–25 µm luminosity of the system, has a mid-infrared spectrum and a mid-/far-infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with starbursts. At the same time, however, it is also possible to attribute up to 60% of the bolometric luminosity to an AGN, consistent with X-ray observations, if the AGN is heavily obscured and emits mostly in the far-infrared. This ambiguity arises because the intrinsic variation of properties among a given galaxy population (e.g., starbursts) introduces at least a factor of a few uncertainty even into the most robust AGN-starburst diagnostics. We conclude that with present observations it is not possible to determine the dominant power source in galaxies when AGN and starburst luminosities are within a factor of a few of each other.

We present the first MIR spectrum of the z=2.2856 ultraluminous, infrared galaxy FSC 10214+4724, obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectrum spans a rest wavelength range of 2.3-11.5 microns, covering a number of key diagnostic emission and absorption features. The most prominent feature in the IRS spectrum is the silicate emission at rest-frame 10 microns. We also detect an unresolved emission line at a rest wavelength of 7.65 microns which we identify with [NeVI], and a slightly resolved feature at 5.6 microns identified as a blend of [Mg VII] and [Mg V]. There are no strong PAH emission features in the FSC 10214+4724 spectrum. We place a limit of 0.1 micron on the equivalent width of 6.2 micron PAH emission but see no evidence of a corresponding 7.7 micron feature. Semi-empirical fits to the spectral energy distribution suggest about 45% of the bolometric luminosity arises from cold 50 K dust, half arises from warm (190 K) dust, and the remainder, 5%, originates from hot (640 K) dust. The hot dust is required to fit the blue end of the steep MIR spectrum. The combination of a red continuum, strong silicate emission, little or no PAH emission, and no silicate absorption, makes FSC 10214+4724 unlike most other ULIRGs or AGN observed thus far with IRS. These apparently contradictory properties may be explained by an AGN which is highly magnified by the lens, masking a (dominant) overlying starburst with unusually weak PAH emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

International audience; We present mid-infrared spectra of the nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240 taken with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectrum of NGC 6240 is dominated by strong fine-structure lines, rotational H2 lines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. The H2 line fluxes suggest molecular gas at a variety of temperatures. A simple two-temperature fit to the S(0) through S(7) lines implies a mass of ~6.7×106 Msolar at T~957 K and ~1.6×109 Msolar at T~164 K, or about 15% of the total molecular gas mass in this system. Notably, we have detected the [Ne V] 14.3 mum emission line, with a flux of 5×10-14 ergs cm-2 s-1, providing the first direct detection of the buried active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the mid-infrared. Modeling of the total spectral energy distribution (SED) from near- to far-infrared wavelengths requires the presence of a hot dust (T~700 K) component, which we also associate with the buried AGN. The small [Ne V]/[Ne II] and [Ne V]/IR flux ratios, the relative fraction of hot dust emission, and the large 6.2 mum PAH equivalent width (EQW), are all consistent with an apparent AGN contribution of only 3%-5% to the bolometric luminosity. However, correcting the measured [Ne V] flux by the extinction implied by the silicate optical depth and our SED fitting suggests an intrinsic fractional AGN contribution to the bolometric luminosity of ~20%-24% in NGC 6240, which lies within the range implied by fits to the hard X-ray spectrum.

Silicates are an important component of interstellar dust and the structure of these grains -- amorphous versus crystalline -- is sensitive to the local physical conditions. We have studied the infrared spectra of a sample of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies. Here, we report the discovery of weak, narrow absorption features at 11, 16, 19, 23, and 28 microns, characteristic of crystalline silicates, superimposed on the broad absorption bands at 10 and 18 microns due to amorphous silicates in a subset of this sample. These features betray the presence of forsterite (Mg_2SiO_4), the magnesium-rich end member of the olivines. Previously, crystalline silicates have only been observed in circumstellar environments. The derived fraction of forsterite to amorphous silicates is typically 0.1 in these ULIRGs. This is much larger than the upper limit for this ratio in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way, 0.01. These results suggest that the timescale for injection of crystalline silicates into the ISM is short in a merger-driven starburst environment (e.g., as compared to the total time to dissipate the gas), pointing towards massive stars as a prominent source of crystalline silicates. We present Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) data and source catalogs from the Spitzer Space Telescope Extragalactic First Look Survey. The data were taken in four broad bands centered at nominal wavelengths of 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns. A set of mosaics and catalogs have been produced which are ~80% complete and ~99% reliable to their chosen flux density limits. The main field survey covers 3.8 deg^2, and has flux density limits of 20muJy, 25muJy, 100muJy and 100muJy at wavelengths of 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns,respectively. The deeper ``verification'' survey covers 0.25 deg^2 with limits of 10muJy, 10muJy, 30muJy and 30muJy, respectively. We also include deep data in the ELAIS-N1 field which covers 0.041deg^2 with limits of 4muJy, 3muJy, 10muJy and 10muJy, respectively, but with only two wavelength coverage at a given sky position. The final bandmerged catalogs contain 103193 objects in the main field, 12224 in the verification field and 5239 in ELAIS-N1. Flux densities of high signal-to-noise objects are accurate to about 10%, and the residual systematic error in the absolute flux density scale is ~2-3%. We have successfully extracted sources at source densities as high as 100000 deg^-2 in our deepest 3.6 and 4.5 micron data. We report the discovery of a very large, spatially extended Ly alpha -emitting nebula at z=2.656 associated with a luminous mid-infrared source. The bright mid-infrared source (F(24um)=0.86 mJy) was first detected in observations made using the Spitzer Space Telescope. Existing broad-band imaging data from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey revealed the mid-infrared source to be associated with a diffuse, spatially extended, optical counterpart in the Bw band. Spectroscopy and further imaging of this target reveals that the optical source is an almost purely line-emitting nebula with little, if any, detectable diffuse continuum emission. The Lya nebula has a luminosity of L[Lya] ~ 1.7e44 erg/s and an extent of at least 20 arcsec (160 kpc). Its central ~8 arcsec shows an ordered, monotonic velocity profile; interpreted as rotation, this region encloses a mass M = 6e12 Msun. Several sources lie within the nebula. The central region of the nebula shows narrow (~365 km/s) emission lines of CIV and HeII. The mid-infrared source is a compact object lying within the nebula, but offset from the center by a projected distance of ~2.5 arcsec (20 kpc), and likely to be an enshrouded AGN. A young star-forming galaxy lies near the northern end of the nebula. We suggest that the nebula is a site of recent multiple galaxy and AGN formation, with the spatial distribution of galaxies within the nebula perhaps tracking the formation history of the system., 37 pages (includes 11 figures). The infrared Spitzer Space Telescope is the last of NASA’s Great Observatories. Highlights of the first results from the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) Extragalactic Team are given. The main focus of this paper is a demonstration of the unprecedented sensitivity of the IRS, which makes observations of distant, dust enshrouded galaxies possible.

Using the SPITZER SPACE TELESCOPE and the VLA, we present the first DIRECT evidence that the well-known far-infrared/radio correlation is valid to cosmologically significant redshift. We also confirm, with improved statistics compared with previous surveys, a similar result for the Mid-IR/radio correlation. We explore the dependence of monochromatic q_{24} and q_{70} on z. The results were obtained by matching Spitzer sources at 24 and 70 microns with VLA 1.4 GHz micro-Jy radio sources obtained for the SPITZER FLS. Spectroscopic redshifts have been obtained for over 500 matched IR/radio sources using observations at WIYN, Keck and archival SDSS data extending out to z > 2. We find that q_{24} shows significantly more dispersion than q_{70}. By comparing the observed fluxes at 70, 24 and 4.5 microns with a library of SED templates, we find that the larger dispersion in q_{24} is predictable in terms of systematic variations in SED shape throughout the population. Although the models are not able to encompass the full range of observed behavior (both the presence of either extremely flat or extremely steep IR SEDs), the fitting parameters were used to `k-correct' the higher-z galaxies which resulted in a reduced scatter in q. For comparison, we also corrected these data using the SED for M82. We report on submillimeter and infrared observations of 28 radio-selected galaxies in the Spitzer First Look Survey Verification field (FLSV). All of the radio-selected galaxies that show evidence for emission at 850um with SCUBA have Spitzer counterparts at 24um, while only half of the radio-selected galaxies without 850um emission have detectable counterparts at 24um. The data show a wide range of infrared colors (S70/S24 < 5--30, S8/S3.6 < 0.3--4), indicative of a mixture of infrared-warm AGN and cooler starburst dominated sources. The galaxies showing 850um emission have Spitzer flux densities and flux density ratios consistent with the range of values expected for high-redshift (z=1--4) ultraluminous infrared galaxies., Accepted for Spitzer ApJS Special Edition, 12 pages including 4 figures and 1 table

The Spitzer Space Telescope, NASA's Great Observatory for infrared astronomy, was launched 2003 August 25 and is returning excellent scientific data from its Earth-trailing solar orbit. Spitzer combines the intrinsic sensitivity achievable with a cryogenic telescope in space with the great imaging and spectroscopic power of modern detector arrays to provide the user community with huge gains in capability for exploration of the cosmos in the infrared. The observatory systems are largely performing as expected and the projected cryogenic lifetime is in excess of 5 years. This paper summarizes the on-orbit scientific, technical and operational performance of Spitzer. The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) is one of three science instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS comprises four separate spectrograph modules covering the wavelength range from 5.3 to 38micron with spectral resolutions, R \~90 and 600, and it was optimized to take full advantage of the very low background in the space environment. The IRS is performing at or better than the pre-launch predictions. An autonomous target acquisition capability enables the IRS to locate the mid-infrared centroid of a source, providing the information so that the spacecraft can accurately offset that centroid to a selected slit. This feature is particularly useful when taking spectra of sources with poorly known coordinates. In this Letter, we present the initial characterization of extragalactic 24um sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) by examining their counterparts at 8um and R-band. The color-color diagram of 24-to-8 vs. 24-to-0.7um is populated with 18,734 sources brighter than the 3sigma flux limit of 110uJy, over an area of 3.7sq.degrees. The 24-to-0.7um colors of these sources span almost 4 orders of magnitudes, while the 24-to-8um colors distribute at least over 2 orders of magnitudes. In addition to identifying ~30% of the total sample with infrared quiescent, mostly low redshift galaxies, we also found that: (1) 23% of the 24um sources (~1200/sq.degrees) have very red 24-to-8 and 24-to-0.7 colors and are probably infrared luminous starbursts with L(IR)>3x10^(11)Lsun at z>1. In particular, 13% of the sample (660/sq.degrees) are 24um detected only, with no detectable emission in either 8um or R-band. These sources are the candidates for being ULIRGs at z>2. (2) 2% of the sample (85/sq.degrees) have colors similar to dust reddened AGNs, like Mrk231 at z~0.6-3. (3) We anticipate that some of these sources with extremely red colors may be new types of sources, since they can not be modelled with any familiar type of spectral energy distribution. We find that 17% of the 24um sources have no detectable optical counterparts brighter than R limit of 25.5mag. Optical spectroscopy of these optical extremely faint 24um sources would be very difficult, and mid-infrared spectroscopy from the Spitzer would be critical for understanding their physical nature (Abridged)., Accepted for publication in ApJ (Spitzer Special Issue)

Selection of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the infrared allows the discovery of AGN whose optical emission is extinguished by dust. In this paper, we use the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey (FLS) to assess what fraction of AGN with mid-infrared luminosities comparable to quasars are missed in optical quasar surveys due to dust obscuration. We begin by using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database to identify 54 quasars within the 4 deg^2 extragalactic FLS. These quasars occupy a distinct region in mid-infrared color space by virtue of their strong, red, continua. This has allowed us to define a mid-infrared color criterion for selecting AGN candidates. About 2000 FLS objects have colors consistent with them being AGN, but most are much fainter in the mid-infrared than the SDSS quasars, which typically have 8 micron flux densities, S(8.0), ~1 mJy. We have investigated the properties of the 43 objects with S(8.0) >= 1 mJy satisfying our AGN color selection. This sample should contain both unobscured quasars, and AGN which are absent from the SDSS survey due to extinction in the optical. After removing 16 known quasars, three probable normal quasars, and eight spurious or confused objects from the initial sample of 43, we are left with 16 objects which are likely to be obscured quasars or luminous Seyfert-2 galaxies. The unprecedented sensitivity of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope allows for the first time the measurement of mid-infrared spectra from 14 to 38 microns of faint high-z galaxies. This unique capability is demonstrated with observations of sources having 16 micron fluxes of 3.6 mJy (CFRS 14.1157) and 0.35 mJy (CFRS 14.9025). A spectral-fitting technique is illustrated which determines the redshift by fitting emission and absorption features characteristic of nearby galaxies to the spectrum of an unknown source. For CFRS 14.1157, the measured redshift is z = 1.00+/-0.20 in agreement with the published result of z = 1.15. The spectrum is dominated by emission from an AGN, similar to the nucleus of NGC 1068, rather than a typical starburst with strong PAH emission like M82. Such spectra will be crucial in characterizing the nature of newly discovered distant galaxies, which are too faint for optical follow-up., Accepted in ApJ Sup. International audience; We present observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 7714 with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra yield a wealth of ionic and molecular features that allow a detailed characterization of its properties. NGC 7714 has an H II region-like spectrum with strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission features. We find no evidence for an obscured active galactic nucleus, and with [NeIII]/[NeII]~0.73, NGC 7714 lies near the upper end of normal-metallicity starburst galaxies. With very little silicate absorption and a temperature of the hottest dust component of 340 K, NGC 7714 is the perfect template for a young, unobscured starburst.

We report the detection of a variable point source, imaged at L'(3.8 microns) with the W. M. Keck II 10-meter telescope's adaptive optics system, that is coincident to within 18 mas of the Galaxy's central supermassive black hole and the unique radio source Sgr A*. While in 2002 this source (SgrA*-IR) was confused with the stellar source S0-2, in 2003 these two sources are separated by 87 mas allowing the new source's properties to be determined directly. On four separate nights, its observed L' magnitude ranges from 12.2 to 13.8, which corresponds to a flux density of 0.7 - 3 mJy, observed, and 4 - 17 mJy, dereddened; no other source in this region shows such large variations in flux density - a factor of 4 over a week and a factor of 2 over 40 min. In addition, it has a K-L' color greater than 2.1, which is at least 1 mag redder than any other source detected at L' in its vicinity. Based on this source's coincidence with the Galaxy's dynamical center, its lack of motion, its variability, and its red color, we conclude that it is associated with the central supermassive black hole. The short timescale for the 3.8 micron flux density variations implies that the emission arises in the accretion flow on physical size scales smaller than 5 AU, or 80 R_s for a 4x10^6 Mo black hole. We suggest that the 3.8 micron emission and the X-ray flares arise from the same underlying physical process, possibly the acceleration of a small populations of electrons to ultrarelativistic energies. In contrast to the X-ray flares which are only detectable 2% of the time, the 3.8 micron emission provides a new, constantly accessible, window into the physical conditions of the plasma in close proximity to the central black hole., published in Astrophysical Journal Letters

Images at 12.5 microns of nuclei of three nearby Seyfert galaxies -- NGC 1275, NGC 4151 and NGC 7469 -- have been obtained with the Keck 10-m Telescope. NGC 7469 is resolved and deconvolution delineates a structure, 23 pages, 7 figures, A.J. in press

The First-Look Survey (FLS) of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) will cover about 5 deg^2 centered on J2000.0 α = 17^h18^m, δ = +59°30' in order to characterize the extragalactic infrared sky 2 orders of magnitude deeper than the IRAS survey. We expect that most of the FLS far-infrared (λ = 160, 70, and 24 μm) sources will be star-forming galaxies obeying the very tight far-infrared/radio correlation and will be continuum radio sources with flux densities S ≳100 μJy at ν = 1.4 GHz. Conversely, radio sources stronger than 100 μJy are usually powered by star-forming galaxies, plus some active galactic nuclei, and most should be detectable by the SIRTF FLS. Thus, a sensitive radio survey can be used to select and identify most of the SIRTF FLS source population before launch. We used the B configuration of the VLA to make an image of the FLS area at ν = 1.4 GHz with σ ≈ 23 μJy beam^(-1) rms fluctuations, θ = 5.”0 resolution, and σ_α ≈ σδ ≾0.”5 rms uncertainties in right ascension and declination. The resulting radio image and catalog of 3565 radio components with peak flux densities S_p ≥ 5 σ = 115 μJy beam^(-1) have been released via the Web to expedite follow-up optical identification and spectroscopy.

We present near-infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of two FR II high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs), 4C 40.36 (z=2.3) and 4C 39.37 (z=3.2), obtained with the Hubble, Keck, and Hale Telescopes. High resolution images were taken with filters both in and out of strong emission lines, and together with the spectroscopic data, the properties of the line and continuum emissions were carefully analyzed. Our analysis of 4C 40.36 and 4C 39.37 shows that strong emission lines (e.g., [O III] 5007 A and H alpha+[N II]) contribute to the broad-band fluxes much more significantly than previously estimated (80% vs. 20-40%), and that when the continuum sources are imaged through line-free filters, they show an extremely compact morphology with a high surface brightness. If we use the R^1/4-law parametrization, their effective radii (r(e)) are only 2-3 kpc while their restframe B-band surface brightnesses at r(e) are I(B) ~ 18 mag/arcsec^2. Compared with z ~ 1 3CR radio galaxies, the former is x3-5 smaller, while the latter is 1-1.5 mag brighter than what is predicted from the I(B)-r(e) correlation. Although exponential profiles produce equally good fits for 4C 40.36 and 4C 39.37, this clearly indicates that with respect to the z~1 3CR radio galaxies, the light distribution of these two HzRGs is much more centrally concentrated. Spectroscopically, 4C 40.36 shows a flat (fnu=const) continuum while 4C 39.37 shows a spectrum as red as that of a local giant elliptical galaxy. Although this difference may be explained in terms of a varying degree of star formation, the similarities of their surface brightness profiles and the submillimeter detection of 4C 39.37 might suggest that the intrinsic spectra is equally blue (young stars or an AGN), and that the difference is the amount of reddening., Comment: 30 pages, 6 tables, 10 figures; Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

Low spectral resolution (delta lambda/lambda ~ 50) mid-infrared observations with high angular resolution (0.3--0.5'') using the Long Wavelength Spectrometer on the Keck I Telescope are reported of the nuclei of five highly luminous infrared bright galaxies. Spectra of eight distinct nuclei, ranging in luminosity from 10^11 L_sun to >10^12 L_sun have been obtained. Four of the nuclei show the characteristic PAH emission features, i.e. 11.3 micron emission as well as the 8.6 micron shoulder of the 7.7 micron band. The other nuclei show either weak PAH emission bands or no evidence for these bands. The high spatial resolution of the observations reveals extended emission in the 11.3 micron PAH band associated with several of the compact nuclear sources. When proper account is taken of the diffuse PAH emission, most of the compact sources show little or no directly associated PAH emission. The diffuse PAH emission is extended over spatial scales of 100--500 pc; its presence shows that there is significant circumnuclear UV/optical emission exciting the aromatic bands, most likely associated with circumnuclear starbursts. After the spectra of the nuclear sources are corrected for the spectrum of the diffuse PAH emission, the peak apparent silicate optical depth at 9.7 microns can be as great as 15, corresponding to > 150 magnitudes of visible light extinction. Imaging spectroscopy using the new Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph is presented for the Pa-alpha line in four ultraluminous infrared galaxies. In most cases, we are able to establish the geometry of the merger, and thus estimate the time in the merger process at which we are viewing the system. The resulting range in estimated ages, some of which are very young encounters (~5x10^7 yr), is not predicted by merger models, which produce high rates of star formation either 1-2x10^8 years after the first encounter or very late (~10^9 yr) in the merger process. Even in the very young mergers, the ultraluminous activity appears to be centrally concentrated on the nucleus of one of the progenitor galaxies---namely the galaxy with a prograde orbital geometry. Very high star formation rates (2-5 M_sun/yr) are also observed in structures believed to be newly formed tidal tails. The presence of a significant population of very young ultraluminous mergers, together with the majority of ultraluminous infrared galaxies existing in the final stages of merger activity, indicates that the ultraluminous galaxy phase is at least bimodal in time. An evolutionary scenario is proposed for ultraluminous infrared galaxies, wherein the far-infrared luminosity may undergo multiple ultraluminous bursts during the course of the encounter. Observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with an achieved resolution approaching the diffraction limit in the mid-infrared from 8 - 25 $��$m using the Keck Telescopes are reported. We find extremely compact structures, with spatial scales of $< 0.3''$ (diameter) in six of the seven ULIRGs observed. These compact sources emit between 30% and 100% of the mid-infrared energy from these galaxies. We have utilized the compact mid-infrared structures as a diagnostic of whether an AGN or a compact (100 -- 300 pc) starburst is the primary power source in these ULIRGs. In Markarian 231, the upper limit on the diameter of the 12.5 $��$m source, 0.13$''$, shows that the size of the infrared source must increase with increasing wavelength, consistent with AGN models. In IRAS 05189-2524 and IRAS 08572+3915 there is strong evidence that the source size increases with increasing wavelength. This suggests heating by a central source rather than an extended luminosity source, consistent with the optical classification as an AGN. The compact mid-infrared sources seen in the other galaxies cannot be used to distinguish the ultimate luminosity source. If these ULIRGs are powered by compact starbursts, the star formation rates seen in the central few hundred parsecs far exceed the global rates seen in nearby starburst galaxies, and approach the surface brightness of individual clusters in nearby starburst galaxies., 33pages, 6 tables, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in AJ

We present ground-based images of the z=1.824 radio galaxy 3C 256 in the standard BVRIJHK filters and an interference filter centered at 8800A, a Hubble Space Telescope image in a filter dominated by Ly-alpha emission (F336W), and spectra covering rest-frame wavelengths from Ly-alpha to [O III] 5007. Together with published polarimetry observations, we use these to decompose the overall spectral energy distribution into nebular continuum emission, scattered quasar light, and stellar emission. The nebular continuum and scattered light together comprise half (one third) of the V-band (K-band) light within a 4-arcsec aperture, and are responsible for the strong alignment between the optical/near-infrared light and the radio emission. The stellar emission is dominated by a population estimated to be 100-200 Myr old (assuming a Salpeter IMF), and formed in a short burst with a peak star formation rate of 1-4x10^3 Msun/yr. The total stellar mass is estimated to be no more than 2x10^{11} Msun, which is far less than other luminous radio galaxies at similar redshifts, and suggests that 3C 256 will undergo further star formation or mergers., 35 pages including 10 figures; to appear in Nov 10 ApJ

Images of Arp 220 from 3.45 to 24.5 $\mu$m with 0.5'' resolution are presented which clearly separate the nucleus into at least two components. The western component is about three times more luminous than the eastern component, but the silicate absorption in the fainter, eastern component is roughly 50% greater than the absorption in the western component. Each component is marginally resolved. The two components seen at 24.5 $\mu$m are identified with the two radio components. The western source most likely coincides with the high extinction disk previously suggested to exist in Arp 220, while the eastern nucleus is identified with a faint highly reddened source seen in HST 2.2 $\mu$m NICMOS images. The two nuclei together account for essentially all of the measured 24.5 $\mu$m flux density. Two models are presented, both of which fit the observations. In one, the majority of the total luminosity is produced in an extended star formation region and in the other most of the luminosity is produced in the compact but extincted regions associated with the two nuclei seen at 24.5 $\mu$m. In both pictures, substantial luminosity at 100 $\mu$m emerges from a component having a diameter of 2--3'' ($\sim$1kpc)., Comment: LaTeX with AAS format, 3 postscript figures, ApJ, accepted

Near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy have been obtained of the gravitationally lensed galaxy at z=4.92 discovered in HST images by Franx et al. (1997). Images at 1.2, 1.6 and 2.2 microns show the same arc morphology as the HST images. The spectrum with resolution \lambda / \Delta\lambda ~ 70 shows no emission lines with equivalent width stronger than 100 A in the rest frame wavelength range 0.34 to 0.40 microns. In particular, [OII]3727 A and [NeIII]3869 A are not seen. The energy distribution is quite blue, as expected for a young stellar population with the observed Ly alpha flux. The spectral energy distribution can be fit satisfactorily for such a young stellar population when absorption by dust is included. The models imply a reddening 0.1 mag < E(B-V) < 0.4 mag. The stellar mass of the lensed galaxy lies in the range of 2 to 16 x 10^9 Msun. This is significantly higher than estimates based on the HST data alone. We present preliminary results for AGNs and starburst galaxies the ISO-IRAS Faint Galaxy Survey (IIFGS). The goal of the survey is to produce a database of infrared-luminous galaxies at redshifts of about 0.1–1 to help explore the AGN-starburst relationship, study the cosmological evolution of luminous infrared galaxies, and identify possible protogalaxy candidates. The candidate list of ∼3700 sources has been extracted from the IRAS Faint Source Survey using criteria selecting for faint, infrared-bright galaxies. The ISO observations will confirm the IRAS detections, yield sensitive 12 & 90 μm fluxes, and provide positions to ∼6" accuracy which will allow unambiguous optical identifications. Confirmed sources are being followed up with ground-based observations to determine optical magnitudes and accurate redshifts. In this preliminary phase we have in hand ∼100 observed fields and are developing techniques to maximize the sensitivity of the observations. Early results for the ISOCAM 12 μm images indicate we can reliably detect sources as faint as ∼0.5 mJy; ∼80% of the fields contain at least one source.

With a redshift of 2.3, the IRAS source FSC 10214+4724 is apparently one of the most luminous objects known in the universe. We present an image of FSC 10214+4724 at 0.8 μm obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 Planetary Camera. The source appears as an unresolved ( < 0”.06) arc 0”.7 long, with significant substructure along its length. The center of curvature of the arc is located near an elliptical galaxy 1”.18 to the north. An unresolved component 100 times fainter than the arc is clearly detected on the opposite side of this galaxy. The most straightforward interpretation is that FSC 10214+4724 is gravitationally lensed by the foreground elliptical galaxy, with the faint component a counterimage of the IRAS source. The brightness of the arc in the HST image is then magnified by ~ 100, and the intrinsic source diameter is -0”.01 (80 pc) at 0.25 μm rest wavelength. The bolometric luminosity is probably amplified by a smaller factor ( ~ 30) as a result of the larger extent expected for the source in the far-infrared. A detailed lensing model is presented that reproduces the observed morphology and relative flux of the arc and counterimage and correctly predicts the position angle of the lensing galaxy. The model also predicts reasonable values for the velocity dispersion, mass, and mass-to-light ratio of the lensing galaxy for a wide range of galaxy redshifts. A redshift for the lensing galaxy of ~ 0.9 is consistent with the measured surface brightness profile from the image, as well as with the galaxy's spectral energy distribution. The background lensed source has an intrinsic luminosity ~ 2 x 10^(13) L_⊙ and remains a highly luminous quasar with an extremely large ratio of infrared to optical/ultraviolet luminosity.

New infrared and optical spectroscopic observations, obtained with the W. M. Keck Telescope, are reported for the highly luminous infrared source FSC 10214+4724. The rest frame optical spectrum shows new emission lines of (Ne III), (Ne V), (O I), (O II), (S II), and He(+), while the rest frame ultraviolet spectrum shows new lines of O IV) + Si IV, N III, N IV), Si II, Ne IV, and possibly N II and (Ne III), as well as clearly showing that Ly-alpha is self-absorbed. The emission-line spectrum is most characteristic of a Seyfert 2 nucleus. The preponderance of spectroscopic evidence strengthens the case for a dust-enshrouded Active galactic nuclei (AGN) powering much or most of the observed luminosity. The various spectral lines lead to a wide range in the inferred reddening and ionization parameter for this system, suggesting that we are viewing several environments through differing extinctions.

We present deep galaxy counts in the K (⋋ 2.2 micrometer) band, obtained at the W. M. Keck 10 m telescope. The data reach limiting magnitudes K approximately 24 mag, about 5 times deeper than the deepest published K-band images to date. The counts are performed in three small (approximately 1 min), widely separated high-latitude fields. Extensive Monte Carlo tests were used to derive the completeness corrections and minimize photometric biases. The counts continue to rise, with no sign of a turnover, down to the limits of our data, with the logarithmic slope of d log N/dm = 0.315 +/- 0.02 between K = 20 and 24 mag. This implies a cumulative surface density of approximately 5 x 10^5 galaxies/sq deg, or approximately 2 x 10^10 over the entire sky, down to K = 24 mag. Our counts are in good agreement with, although slightly lower than, those from the Hawaii Deep Survey by Cowie and collaborators; the discrepancies may be due to the small differences in the aperture corrections. We compare our counts with some of the available theoretical predictions. The data do not require models with a high value of Omega_0, but can be well fitted by models with no (or little) evolution, and cosmologies with a low value of Omega_0. Given the uncertainties in the models, it may be premature to put useful constrains on the value of Omega_0 from the counts alone. Optical-to-IR colors are computed, using CCD data obtaind previously at Palomar. We find a few red galaxies with (r-K) approximately greater than 5 mag, or (i-K) approximately greater than 5 mag; these may be ellipticals at z approximately 1. While the redshift distribution of galaxies in our counts is still unknown, the flux limits reached would allow us to detect unobscured L_* galaxies out to substantial redshifts (z greater than 3?)

Near-infrared observations of the z = 2.286 IRAS source FSC 10214+4724, made with the near-infrared camera on the W. M. Keck Telescope, are reported. Deep broad-band images at 2.15 and 1.27 micrometers, and narrow-band images at 2.165 and 2.125 µm with 0.”6 to 0.”9 seeing show that FSC 10214+4724 consists of at least three distinct components in a compact group of galaxies. The source of the infrared luminosity appears to be in a strongly interacting galaxy that has a luminosity of ~100 times that of a present-day L* galaxy. The interaction suggests and 'age' of this galaxy of ≃ 10^9 yr. The Hα emission is resolved as a source of diameter ≃ 5 kpc, suggesting that a starburst contributes to the observed Hα emission. There is an excess of objects in the FSC 10214+4724 field that could represent galaxies in an associated cluster.
