The Fraser River Delta (FRD) is a large sedimentary system and home to Metro Vancouver, situated within the unceded territories of several First Nations. This review provides an overview of the geological evolution of the FRD, connecting hydrodynamic processes with sedimentary deposits across its diverse environments, from the river to the delta slope. The study emphasizes the implications of sedimentation and delta evolution for natural hazards and coastal/delta management, pinpointing knowledge gaps. Comprising four main zones—river, delta plain, tidal flats, and delta slope—the FRD is subject to several natural hazards, including subsidence, flooding, earthquakes, liquefaction, and tsunamis. The delta plain, bordering the Fraser River's distributary channels, hosts tidal marshes and flats, including both active and abandoned areas. Active tidal flats like Roberts Bank and Sturgeon Bank receive sediment directly from the Fraser River, while abandoned tidal flats, like those at Boundary Bay and Mud Bay, no longer receive sediment. The tidal flats transition into the delta slope, characterized by sand in the south and mud in the north of the Main Channel. The FRD's susceptibility to hazards necessitates protective measures, with approximately 250 km of dykes shielding the delta plain from river floods and storm surges. Subsidence amplifies the impact of rising sea levels. Earthquakes in the region can induce tsunamis, submarine slope failures, and liquefaction of delta sediments, emphasizing the importance of incorporating sedimentation patterns and delta evolution into management strategies for sustainable urban development, habitat restoration, and coastal defence initiatives. The Silurian Sharawra Member (middle to late Llandoverian) in Saudi Arabia exhibits unique surface traces with exceptional preservation: Seven small, wing-shaped traces occur on a sandstone slab showing well-defined hummocky cross-stratification having a few decimeters wavelength being covered by a thin mud layer. These traces are preserved as concave epirelief along with elongated internal striae and surrounded by slightly elevated levees. Preservation of these delicate, 10–20 mm long and ∼10 mm wide traces suggests that they were formed after a storm event when mud had already settled to the sediment surface. The lack of wave-generated sedimentary structures implies deposition between fair-weather and storm-wave base probably preventing further rapid reworking by waves. Based on their geometry, internal pattern, and spatial distribution, these wing-shaped traces are interpreted to have been produced by relatively stationary bottom-feeding fish, morphologically similar to ancestors of Gobiidae, probably in the Actinopterygii class. The majority of fish-made trace fossils record feeding and locomotion behaviour, whereas the wing-shaped traces are interpreted to represent resting structures made by fish that pressed their fins downward on the muddy sediment surface and hence, represent undertracks. These traces are possibly the oldest fish-made structure documented thus far. These wing-shaped traces are described as Pisquiesichnus dashtgardi igen. et isp. nov. in this study. Forward stratigraphic modelling (FSM) is a relatively new approach that is used to test the importance of parameters that control stratigraphic stacking patterns and to reveal uncertainties such as sedimentation rate and accommodation space. Although FSM is commonly employed in the study of ancient systems, it is rarely applied to modern settings. The Fraser River Delta in Canada provides an opportunity to test applications of FSM in recently deposited sediments in an active sedimentary basin. Because it is un-dammed, the river enables comparison of the modern and ancient systems. It is also a well-studied river system, with sufficient data to generate a realistic model for predicting future scenarios. In this study, Dionisos software is used, and the evolution of the delta over the past 10,000 years is successfully simulated in two steps (5000 years each) using both realistic and real-time data. The main controlling parameters are observed to be the sediment supply and water discharge values, and to a lesser extent, sea level variation. Several possible future scenarios are tested, changing the main parameters to understand and to predict future morphological changes and stacking patterns. Increasing the main parameter values resulted in progradation, while reducing resulted in erosion, particularly in the subaqueous section of the delta. Ichnological analysis, particularly assessing bioturbation index, provides critical parameters for characterizing many oil and gas reservoirs. It provides information on reservoir quality, paleodepositional conditions, redox conditions, and more. However, accurately characterizing ichnological characteristics requires long hours of training and practice, and many marine or marginal marine reservoirs require these specialized expertise. This adds more load to geoscientists and may cause distraction, errors, and bias, particularly when continuously logging long sedimentary successions. In order to alleviate this issue, we propose an automated technique to determine the bioturbation index in cores and outcrops by harnessing the capabilities of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) as image classifiers. In order to find a fast and robust solution, we utilize ideas from deep learning. We compiled and labeled a large data set (1303 images) composed of images spanning the full range (BI 0–6) of bioturbation indices. We divided these images into groups based on their bioturbation indices in order to prepare training data for the DCNN. Finally, we analyzed the trained DCNN model on images and obtained high classification accuracies. The main aim of this study is to constrain the range of reservoir properties observed in various depositional environments of the fine-grained sandstones of the early Silurian middle Qusaiba Member, Qalibah Formation, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Facies analysis, micro-X-ray fluorescence (μXRF), lamina-scale permeability measurements, automated helium porosity-permeability measurement, and pore system visualization were integrated to observe variations in these various environments. Seven main facies were recognized and interpreted to be deposited in an offshore "turbiditic-influenced" to lower shoreface paleoenvironments. These facies include current rippled siltstone (F1); Contorted silty sandstone (F2); current rippled fine-grained sandstone (F3); planar-laminated fine-grained sandstone (F4); Bioturbated to current-rippled argillaceous siltstone to silty sandstone (F5); Current rippled silty sandstone (F6); bioturbated sandstone (F7) facies. These facies were clustered into several fabric classes; 1) contorted fabrics associated with load casts flame structure that is characteristic of F2: These typically revealed slightly higher porosity and permeability values than the surrounding media with a spherical and relatively low anisotropy. 2) Planar-laminated fabrics in F4 that overlain by cryptic bioturbation: It comprises of clay mineral-rich laminae with higher porosity and permeability and the quartz-rich laminae with lower porosity and permeability probably due to abundant calcite cement associated with detrital quartz. Higher anisotropy, associated with this fabric, was observed. Cryptic bitourbated interval showed relatively low permeability. 3) In F7, three types of rock fabrics were observed, (1) Vertical sand-filled Piscichnus trace fossil: The burrow fill shows significantly higher porosity and permeability values than the laminated matrix; this fabric reveals an elliptical and highly anisotropic variance map. (2) Horizontal sand-filled Thalassinoides burrow (with iron oxide cement).: The internal core of this fabric was highly porous and permeable compared to the laminated fabric. Thalassinoides fabric had the most elliptical and highest anisotropic variance map in F7. (3) Entirely laminated fabric with bed-parallel gypsum veins: The permeability of the veins was slightly higher than that of the matrix, this resulted in a less anisotropic variance map. μCT scanning was used for F5 and F6; In the F5 facies, more significant porosity associated with quartz-rich lamina than iron oxide (e.g., siderite) and gypsum-rich lamina were observed probably due to higher chlorite alignment in the iron oxide-rich lamina. We found lower porosity and permeability within the vertical mud-filled burrows (Piscichnus) than the laminated fabric; this was also observed in the 3D pore system imaged by μCT scanning. These findings could have significant implications for different fabric types in fluid flow conduits in argillaceous sandstone and siltstone systems. • Effect of small-scale fabrics on permeability was examined in fine-grained sediments. • Lamination and deformation are the main factors controlling μm to mm-scale permeability of turbiditic deposits. • Bioturbation has an impact on permeability of lower shoreface sediments. The integration of geochemistry and sequence stratigraphic models in the study of shale formations is critical to the development of robust stratigraphic correlations and paleoenvironmental interpretations. The Middle and Upper Devonian Horn River Group is a prominent organic-rich shale sequence in northeastern British Columbia, Canada, and it also hosts major natural gas reserves. The availability of high-resolution geochemical data sets on five continuous cores and an independent core-based sequence stratigraphic framework provide new insights into the effects of relative sea-level changes on redox conditions, productivity, detrital flux, and organic matter enrichment patterns and their geographic variation. Sequence stratigraphic analysis documents three third-order transgressive-regressive cycles within the Horn River Group. Organic carbon content is typically enriched in transgressive systems tracts and depleted in regressive systems tracts. Correlations among total organic carbon (TOC) content and multiple geochemical proxies indicate that organic matter accumulation was controlled by redox conditions, bioproductivity, and detrital dilution, all of which were directly affected by relative sea-level fluctuations. Redox proxies are strongly correlated to TOC content, suggesting that redox conditions exerted a major control over organic carbon accumulation. Redox-sensitive traceelemental ratios and Corg-Fe-S relationships suggest that bottom water was less oxygenated during transgressions than regressions and in distal areas than in proximal parts of the basin. Productivity may have been linked to anoxia via mineralization of organic matter during periods of high productivity, resulting in water-column oxygen depletion. However, biogenic silica concentrations demonstrate enhanced productivity during transgressions, perhaps related to enhanced recycling of nutrients under anoxic conditions. Relative detrital sediment flux to the basin, as measured by aluminum and titanium concentrations, varied systematically as a function of relative sea level and paleogeographic position. Specifically, elevated detrital flux accompanied regressions and was greatest in proximal areas of the basin, resulting in dilution of organic matter concentration at these times in these regions of the basin. Our study demonstrates that relative sea-level fluctuations exerted substantial control on patterns of organic carbon enrichment. However, geochemical signatures of sea-level cycles vary with respect to paleogeographic location within the basin and are most obvious at intermediate locations and water depths, where sea-level falls brought chemoclines to the seabed and forced clastic sediments to the basin floor. Facies-scale trends in porosity and permeability are commonly mapped for reservoir models and flow simulation; however, these trends are too broad to capture bed and bed-set heterogeneity, and there is a need to up-scale detailed, bed-scale observations, especially in low-permeability reservoir intervals. Here we utilize sedimentology and ichnology at the bed- and bedset-scale to constrain the range of porosity and permeability that can be expected within facies of the Lower Cretaceous Viking Formation of south-central, Alberta, Canada. Three main facies were recognized, representing deposition from the middle shoreface to the upper offshore. Amalgamated, hummocky cross-stratified sandstone facies (Facies S HCS ) consist of alternations between intensely bioturbated beds and sparsely bioturbated/laminated beds. Trace fossil assemblages in bioturbated beds of Facies S HCS are attributable to the archetypal Skolithos Ichnofacies, and are morphologically characterized by vertical, sand-filled shafts (VSS). Bioturbated beds show poor reservoir properties (max: 10% porosity, mean: 85.1 mD) compared to laminated beds (max 20% porosity, mean: 186 mD). Bioturbated muddy sandstone facies (Facies S B ) represent trace fossil assemblages primarily attributable to the proximal expression of the Cruziana Ichnofacies. Four ichnological assemblages occur in varying proportions, namely sediment-churning assemblages (SC), horizontal sand-filled tube assemblages (HSF), VSS assemblages, and mud-filled, lined, or with spreiten (MLS) assemblages. Ichnological assemblages containing horizontal (max: 30% porosity, mean: 1.28 mD) or vertical sand-filled burrows (max: 10% porosity, mean: 2.2 mD) generally have better reservoir properties than laminated beds (max: 20% porosity, mean: 0.98 mD). Conversely, ichnological assemblages that consist of muddy trace fossils have lower porosity and permeability (max 10% porosity, mean: 0.89 mD). Highly bioturbated, sediment churned fabrics have only slightly higher porosity and permeability overall (max: 15% porosity, mean: 1.29 mD). Bioturbated sandy mudstone facies (Facies M B ) contain ichnofossils representing an archetypal expression of the Cruziana Ichnofacies. Four ichnological assemblages occur throughout Facies M B that are similar to Facies S B ; SC, HSF, VSS, and MLS assemblages. The SC (max: 15% porosity, mean: 21.67 mD), HSF (max: 20% porosity, mean: 3.79 mD), and VSS (max: 25% porosity, mean: 7.35 mD) ichnological assemblages have similar or slightly lower values than the laminated beds (max: 20% porosity, mean: 10.7 mD). However, MLS assemblages have substantially lower reservoir quality (max: 10% porosity, mean: 0.66 mD). Our results indicate that the most likely occurrence of good reservoir characteristics in bioturbated strata exists in sand-filled ichnological assemblages. This is especially true within the muddy upper offshore to lower shoreface, where vertically-oriented trace fossils can interconnect otherwise hydraulically isolated laminated sandstone beds; this improves vertical fluid transmission. The results of this work largely corroborate previous findings about ichnological impacts on reservoir properties. Unlike previous studies, however, we demonstrate that the characteristics of the ichnological assemblage, such as burrow form and the nature of burrow fill, also play an important role in determining reservoir characteristics. It follows that not all bioturbated intervals (attributed to the same facies) should be treated equally. When upscaling bed-scale observations to the reservoir, a range of possible permeability-porosity values can be tested for model sensitivity and to help determine an appropriate representative elementary volume. Shale reservoirs of the Middle and Upper Devonian Horn River Group provide an opportunity to study the influence of rock composition on permeability and pore throat size distribution in high maturity formations. Sedimentological, geochemical and petrophysical analyses reveal relationships between rock composition, pore throat size and matrix permeability. In our sample set, measured matrix permeability ranges between 1.69 and 42.81 nanodarcies and increases with increasing porosity. Total organic carbon (TOC) content positively correlates to permeability and exerts a stronger control on permeability than inorganic composition. A positive correlation between silica content and permeability, and abundant interparticle pores between quartz crystals, suggests that quartz may be another factor enhancing the permeability. Pore throat size distributions are strongly related to TOC content. In organic rich samples, the dominant pore throat size is less than 10 nm, whereas in organic lean samples, pore throat size distribution is dominantly greater than 20 nm. SEM images suggest that in organic rich samples, organic matter pores are the dominant pore type, whereas in quartz rich samples, the dominant type is interparticle pores between quartz grains. In clay rich and carbonate rich samples, the dominant pore type is intraparticle pores, which are fewer and smaller in size. High permeability shales are associated with specific depositional facies. Massive and pyritic mudstones, rich in TOC and quartz, have comparatively high permeability. Organic matter (OM) accumulation in organic matter-rich mudstones, or black shales, is generally recognized to be controlled by combinations of bioproductivity, preservation, and dilution. However, specific triggers of OM deposition in these formations are commonly difficult to identify with geochemical proxies, in part because of feedbacks that cause geochemical proxies for these controls to vary synchronously. This apparent synchronicity is partly a function of sample spacing, commonly at decimeter to meter intervals, which may represent longer periods of time than is required for the development of feedbacks. Higher resolution data sets may be required to fully interpret OM accumulation.This study applies a novel combination of technologies to develop a high-resolution geochemical data set, integrating energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and infrared imagery analyses, to record proxies for redox conditions, bioproductivity, and clastic and carbonate dilution in millimeter-resolution profiles of 133 core slabs from the Middle and Upper Devonian Horn River shale in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, which provides decadal-scale temporal resolution. A comparison to a more coarsely sampled data set from the same core results in substantially different interpretations of variations in bioproductivity, redox, and dilution proxies. Stratigraphic distributions of organic matter accumulation patterns (bioproductivity-control, siliciclastic/carbonate-dilution, and redox conditions-control) show that organic enrichment events were highly varied during deposition of the shale and were closely related to second- and third-order sea-level changes. High-resolution profiles indicate that bioproductivity was the predominant trigger for organic matter accumulation in a second-order highstand, particularly during deposition of third-order transgressive systems tracts. Organic matter accumulation was largely controlled by dilution from either carbonate or clastic sediments in a second-order lowstand. The detrital grain size of siltstone reservoirs occupies a middle ground between sandstones and shales, both of which are better understood in terms of their petrophysical properties. Because siltstones can be important hydrocarbon reservoirs, we examine controls on petrophysical properties in the Lower Triassic Montney Formation in western Canada, which hosts world-class reserves of gas, gas liquids and oil. We focus on the effects of rock fabric (including grain size) and composition on pore system characteristics and permeability, drawing contrasts between the three reservoir types. The Montney Formation is an unconventional reservoir through most of its subcrop, with porosities ranging from ∼3 to 7.5% and permeabilities in the micro to nano Darcy range (6.5*10−6 mD to 5.6*10−2 mD). Shale reservoirs worldwide are characterized by similar porosity and permeability values, with porosity of up to 8% (rarely up to 15%) and permeability in the nano to micro-Darcy range. Quartz, clay, and organic matter abundance influence the petrophysical properties of the Montney siltstone. Quartz content exerts a positive control on both porosity and permeability by strengthening the rock framework and reducing porosity loss due to compaction. Elevated clay content is also associated with higher porosity and permeability, in part because of a depositional association with quartz, and in part because clays locally shelter interconnected primary porosity that promotes permeability. Organic matter content is negatively correlated to porosity and permeability despite the presence of organic matter porosity because relict oil (now solid bitumen) occludes primary pores and because other pore types contribute a greater fraction of the total pore volume. Lithofacies, characterized in four cores, are indistinguishable on the basis of petrophysical properties, due to their similar grain size and composition and the massive overprinting by shallow burial diagenesis. While the pore system evolution of sandstones is mainly controlled by the mechanical compaction of hard grains and cementation, pore system evolution of shales is primarily controlled by compaction of ductile grains and diagenesis of primary organic matter, in addition to cementation. Porosity and permeability values of the Montney siltstones are similar to those of shale formations, but the controls on pore system evolution of this intermediate grain size reservoir are predominantly controlled by processes similar to sandstones: compaction, cementation, and cement dissolution. Minor contribution from secondary porosity in bitumen affects some sections of the reservoir in a way that is similar, but not identical, to shale reservoirs. Finally, we showed that porosity and permeability values, as well aspore dimensions in the Montney siltstone are similar to those reported for shale reservoirs, despite the coarser grain size of the siltstone. Diagenetic models for silt-rich mudstone (siltstone) are less advanced than those for sandstone and clay-rich mudstone. In addition, the influences of diagenetic processes on reservoir quality in siltstone formations are poorly understood. Here we examine the roles of depositional facies, detrital composition, and diagenetic processes in the compositional evolution and reservoir quality of the Lower Triassic Montney Formation, a prominent siltstone-dominated reservoir in western Canada with very large reserves of oil, gas-liquids and natural gas. We applied advanced, high-resolution petrographic methods including SEM (SE, BSE, EDX and SEM-CL), XRD, and QEMSCAN technologies, as well as He-pycnometry on samples from 17 different locations within the basin that represent a range of depths and thermal maturities. Cross-cutting and overgrowth relationships and volumes of authigenic phases demonstrate massive precipitation of quartz, feldspar, dolomite, calcite and anhydrite cements at shallow burial depths, leading to compositional homogeneity among different lithofacies. We propose that the precipitation of large volumes of cement resulted from high fluid flux through the formation at shallow depth, possibly driven by reflux of concentrated seawater in nearshore saltpans. Siltstones preserve relatively high porosity and permeability at shallow burial depths, differing from clay-rich mudstones. In contrast to sandstones, deep burial diagenesis played a relatively minor role in the compositional evolution of the Montney Formation siltstone and is expressed in the form of pressure solution and minor amounts of fibrous illite precipitation. • Diagenesis controls reservoir quality in the Montney Formation. • Siltstones preserve higher porosity and permeability at shallow depth than shales. • Extensive shallow burial diagenesis may be typical of siltstones. • Diagenesis obliterated depositional influences on sediment composition.
