Abstract

The Greenheugh pediment at the base of Aeolis Mons (Mt. Sharp), which may truncate units in the Murray formation and is capped by a thin sandstone unit, appears to represent a major shift in climate history within Gale crater. The pediment appears to be an erosional remnant of potentially a much more extensive feature. Curiosity’s traverse through the southern extent of Glen Torridon (south of Vera Rubin ridge) has brought the rover in contact with several new stratigraphic units that lie beneath the pediment. These strata were visited at two outcrop-forming buttes (Central and Western butte- both remnants of the retreating pediment) south of an orbitally defined boundary marking the transition from the Fractured Clay-bearing Unit (fCU) and the fractured Intermediate Unit (fIU). Here we present preliminary interpretations of the stratigraphy within Central and Western buttes and propose the Western butte cap rocks do not match the pediment capping unit.

Abstract

Mars has a sedimentary history that spans billions of years. Orbital images have allowed for the identification of vast regional sedimentary deposits that can be traced over 100s of kilometers and are 100s of meters thick including localized alluvial, deltaic, and lacustrine deposits. Detections of secondary minerals in these deposits from orbital spectroscopy suggest the aqueous history of early Mars varied as a function of space and time. Orbital observations, however, provide a simplified and incomplete picture of Mars’ sedimentary history because measurements for inferring sediment transport and deposition, such as lithology, grain size, and internal structures, and measurements for inferring sediment source and aqueous alteration, such as outcrop-scale mineralogic and geochemical composition and diagenetic features, cannot be identified from orbit. Rover observations have significantly enhanced our view of ancient and modern sedimentary environments on Mars, resulting in detailed reconstructions of paleo-environments and habitability.

Abstract

The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover landed in Gale crater in August 2012 to characterize modern and ancient surface environments. Curiosity executed a two-phase campaign to study the morphology, activity, physical properties, and chemical and mineralogical composition of the Bagnold Dune Field, an active eolian dune field on the lower slopes of Aeolis Mons (Mount Sharp). Detectable aspects of dune sand mineralogy have been examined from orbit with the visible/short-wave infrared spectrometer CRISMand the thermal-infrared spectrometers THEMIS and TES. CRISM data demonstrate variations in plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine abundances across the dune field. Curiosity analyzed sediments from two locations in the dune field to evaluate the causes of the mineralogical differences observed from orbit. The Gobabeb sample was collected from Namib Dune, a barchanoidal dune on the upwind margin of the dune field, and the Ogunquit Beach sample was collected from the Mount Desert Island sand patch located downwind from Namib. These samples were sieved to <150 μm and delivered to the CheMin X-ray diffraction instrument for quantitative mineralogical analysis. CRISM-derived mineralogy of the Namib Dune and Mount Desert Island and CheMin-derived mineralogy of the Gobabeb and Ogunquit Beach samples can be used in a value-added manner to interpret grain segregation at the bedform to dune-field scale and evaluate contributions from local sediment sources. Models of CRISM data demonstrate that Mount Desert Island is more enriched in olivine and less enriched in plagioclase than Namib dune, suggesting that fine-grained mafic sediments are preferentially mobilized downwind. Curiosity data indicate olivine also forms a coarse lag on the lee sides of barchanoidal dunes. Minor abundances of hematite, quartz, and anhydrite and small differences in the crystal chemistry of plagioclase and pyroxene derived from CheMin data suggest that sediments from the underlying lacustrine rocks also contribute to the Bagnold sands.

Abstract

The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has concluded its exploration of Marathon Valley, a 100-meter-wide valley in the western rim of the 22-kilometer-diameter Endeavour crater. Orbital observations from CRISM (Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars) indicated the presence of Fe smectites in Marathon Valley. Since leaving the valley, Opportunity has been traversing along the inner rim of the crater, and currently towards the outer rim. This presentation describes the Pancam 430 to 1009 nanometer (VNIR - Visible and Near Infared) multispectral reflectance and APXS (Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer) chemical compositions of rock and soil units observed during the latter portions of the Marathon Valley campaign on the Knudson Ridge area and observations of those materi-als along the traverse to the south. Full Pancam spectral coverage of rock targets consists of 13 filter (13f) data collections with 11 spectrally unique channels with data processing. Data were examined using spectral parameters, decorrelation stretch composites, and spectral mixture analysis. Note that color terms used here refer to colors in various false-color renditions, not true colors. The APXS determines major and select trace element compositions of targets.

The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has traversed 10.2 kilometers along segments of the west rim of the 22-kilometer-diameter Noachian Endeavour impact crater as of sol 4608 (01/09/17). The stratigraphy, attitude of units, lithology, and degradation state of bedrock outcrops exposed on the crater rim have been examined in situ and placed in geologic context. Structures within the rim and differences in physical properties of the identified lithologies have played important roles in localizing outcrops bearing evidence of aqueous alteration.

Abstract

The Mars Exploration Rover Spirit ended its mission in Gusev crater on sol 2210 after it had become stuck in a deposit of fined-grained and sulfate rich soil with dust covered solar panels unfavorably pointed toward the sun. Final analysis of remaining data from Spirit's Moessbauer spectrometer (Fe redox and mineralogy) for sols 1529 through 2071 is now complete. We focus here on chemical (APXS) and MB data for targets having high-SiO2 or high-SO3 and process link the targets through mixing and geochemical modelling to an acid-sulfate system centered at Home Plate, which is considered to be a hydrovolcanic complex.

Abstract

Glen Torridon (GT) is a geomorphic feature of Aeolis Mons (informally Mt. Sharp) in Gale crater, Mars, variably covered by local regolith and wind‐blown basaltic sands. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's Compact Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) detected clay minerals in GT, making GT a target of investigation by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity, which confirmed a large abundance of clays. The MSL Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) instrument observed enrichments in bulk subsurface (<50 cm) hydration along the rover traverse compared to lower stratigraphic sections of Mt. Sharp. Here, we investigate the relationship between the CRISM 3 µm hydration index and DAN results, taking into consideration the different spatial scales and effective depths of these two instruments. We show that the elevated hydration observed by CRISM in one area of GT corresponds to elevated DAN‐derived hydration, while the lower CRISM hydration in another area of GT does not correspond to a significantly lower DAN‐derived hydration. We find that CRISM measured lower hydration in areas with good bedrock exposure or sand cover, while DAN bulk hydration is relatively insensitive to these characteristics. DAN active neutron results also show that the stratigraphically higher section of GT has significantly higher neutron absorption, which could be due to Fe‐ and Mn‐rich diagenetic features. Additionally, DAN results show that GT is enriched in hydrogen with respect to other, less clay‐rich units observed throughout the traverse, suggesting that subsurface clay minerals could be a significant reservoir for the hydration measured by DAN in GT. Plain Language Summary: Glen Torridon (GT) is a region of Mt. Sharp in Gale crater, Mars. The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), an orbital instrument, detected abundant clay minerals in GT, which the NASA rover, Curiosity, later confirmed. Both CRISM and the DAN instrument on Curiosity (used to measure subsurface water) detected greater hydration in GT than in other rock layers investigated by the rover. CRISM measures hydration of the uppermost surface layer, while DAN measures the subsurface hydration to a depth of ∼50 cm. CRISM detected greater surface hydration in northern GT than in southern GT, but DAN sees little difference in the hydration of these two areas. Northern GT has a rougher surface (the bedrock is covered by small rocks and pebbles) than southern GT, which is mostly exposed bedrock. Although northern GT appears to be more hydrated to CRISM, it is probably an effect of the loose surface material boosting the signal. Because DAN is not affected by surface roughness, DAN does not see this enhancement. Instead, DAN sees elevated hydration throughout GT, suggesting that subsurface clays may be more hydrated than previously thought. Abstract

The Bagnold linear dune field investigated by Curiosity at Mount Desert Island (MDI) is north of the ∼5.5 km high Aeolis Mons mound in Gale crater. False‐color images (RGB: 2.496, 1.802, and 1.237 μm, respectively) generated from Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) data show the dune field has a reddish‐brown color. The Sands of Forvie (SoF), located ∼2.5 km to the southeast of MDI, is darker and lacks the reddish‐brown color. Single scattering albedo (SSA) spectra retrieved at 12 m/pixel using along‐track oversampled CRISM observation FRT00021C92 show a long wavelength (1.7–2.5 μm) increase in albedo for MDI dunes. For the same wavelength interval, SoF is characterized by a broad ∼2.2 μm absorption feature, consistent with color differences between the two deposits. Checkerboard un‐mixing of the SSA image cube was used to isolate spectral endmembers within the MDI and SoF deposits. Radiative modeling of these CRISM spectral endmembers using Hapke (2012, https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139025683) theory implies finer grain sizes, more pigeonite, plagioclase, and olivine, and less basaltic glass and augite for MDI as compared to the SoF deposit. These results are consistent with Curiosity‐based observations that MDI contains smaller ripples with overall finer grains, whereas SoF has large ripples with coarser grains on the crests. Although these sand deposits are only located ∼2.5 km away from one another, wind and local topographic controls are interpreted to have modulated grain sizes and mineralogy. Plain Language Summary: "The present is the key to the past" is a fundamental tenet of geological sciences. Studying modern‐day, active processes and products provides important insights into interpreting the ancient rock record. Previous studies using orbital imaging data and rover‐based observations show that wind‐blown sand deposits occur in many locations and cover a variety of ages in Martian rock records. Thus, study of modern Martian sand deposits is an important element for understanding the processes that produced ancient deposits in addition to providing information about the modern depositional environments. To that end we have pursued advanced processing of hyperspectral imaging data covering two separate, modern sand deposits that were visited and characterized by the Curiosity rover. We show that the Mount Desert Island (MDI) linear dunes, located in the large Bagnold dune field, have different mineral abundances and smaller grain sizes than the Sands of Forvie (SoF) sand sheet. These differences result, at least in part, from the competing processes of unconstrained dune migration (MDI) and topographically inhibited sand migration (SoF). This is the case even though the two deposits are the same age and only ∼2.5 km away from one another, thereby providing an important lesson for interpreting the ancient rock record. Abstract

The APXS - supported and promoted strongly by Heinrich Waenke - on all four Mars Rovers has returned compositional data from about 1000 rocks and soil targets along the combined traverses of over 60 kilometers. Providing precise and accurate bulk chemistry with typically 16 quantified elements, the APXS is a powerful and versatile tool that when combined with the ability to traverse to key rocks and soils has provided critical information needed to understand the geologic evolution of Mars. APXS data allow comparisons among landing sites, provide ground truth for orbiters and connections back to SNC meteorites. The soils and dust are basaltic in character and represent the average Mars composition similar to Adirondack basalts from Gusev crater but with unambiguous elevated and correlated S, Cl and Zn contents. At all four landing sites the APXS found several rocks with a felsic composition. The similarity is best assessed in a logarithmic ratio plot of rock normalized to the average soil composition (Fig.1). High alkaline, Al, and low Mg, Fe, low S, Cl and Ni, Zn as well as an Fe/Mn ratio of approximately 50 indicate a likely unaltered and igneous origin. Sediments, e.g. the Burns formation, with approximately 25 wt% SO3 at Meridiani Planum have been documented over 10s of kilometers (Fig. 2). This formation is compositionally homogeneous, but showing the removal of MgSO4 and a threefold increase in Cl downhill in 2 craters. The degraded rim of the Noachian crater Endeavour resembles average Mars crust, with local Ca, Mg and Fe sulfate alteration and elevated Mn, some felsic rocks, and high Al, Si and low Fe rocks, possibly indicating clays. Unusual soils at Gusev crater in the area surrounding Home Plate include some very rich in ferric sulfate salts (up to 35 wt% SO3) and some with 90% wt% SiO2, possibly indicating fumerolic activities. Rocks in the Columbia Hills show significant signs of alteration including elevated S, Cl and Br in the abraded interior. At Gale Crater, mudstones with approximately 20% clay, less than 1% SO3 and overall average Mars composition indicate a former habitable environment with low acidity. A remarkable diversity of compositions was found during Curiosity's traverses, which likely stems from material influx from the northern Gale rim. At Pahrump, the base of Mount Sharp, a homogeneous mudstone with lower Mg and Ca was encountered. The composition of this Murray unit can be traced over several kilometers with smooth trends of higher Fe/Mn and lower soluble trace elements Ni and Zn at higher elevation. The likely aeolian Stimson formation with average Mars crustal composition intersects in several places in sharp contact with the Murray formation. Both units show local alteration halos with highly elevated SiO2 of up to 75%, usually correlated with increase in Ti and often P.

In its 12th year of exploration and 1600 sols since arrival at the rim of the 22 km-diameter Noachian Endeavour impact crater, Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity traversed from the summit of the western rim segment "Cape Tribulation" to "Marathon Valley", a shallow trough dissecting the rim and the site of strong orbital detection of smectites. In situ analysis of the exposures within Marathon Valley is establishing some of the geologic and geochemical controls on the aqueous alteration responsible for smectite detection known to occur in crater rims throughout Noachian terrains of Mars.

Abstract

The Athena science payload on the Mars Exploration Rovers (MER Spirit and Opportunity) includes the Microscopic Imager (MI), a fixed focus close-up camera mounted on the instrument arm. The MI acquires images at a scale of 31 micrometers/pixel over a broad spectral range (400 to 700 nm) using only natural illumination of target surfaces. Radio signals from Spirit have not been received since March 2010, so attempts to communicate with that rover ceased in mid-2011. The Opportunity MI optics were contaminated by a global dust storm in 2007. That contamination continues to reduce the contrast of MI images, and is being monitored by occasionally imaging the sky.

Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has been exploring Mars for 12+ years, and is presently investigating the geology of a western rim segment of 22 kilometers diameter, Noachian- aged Endeavour crater. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer has determined the compositions of a pre-impact lithology, the Matijevic fm., and polymict impact breccias ejected from the crater, the Shoemaker fm. Opportunity is now investigating a region named Marathon Valley that cuts southwest-northeast through the central portion of the rim segment and provides a window into the lower stratigraphic record. (Geographic names used here are informal.) At the head of Marathon Valley, referred to here as Upper Marathon Valley, is a shallow, ovoid depression approximately 25×35 millimeters in size, named Spirit of Saint Louis. Layering inside Spirit of Saint Louis appears continuous with the Upper Marathon Valley rocks outside, indicating they are coeval. Spirit of Saint Louis is partly bounded by approximately 10-20 centimeters wide zone containing reddish altered rocks (red zone). Red zones also form prominent curvilinear features in Marathon Valley. Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) spectra provide evidence for a really extensive Fe-Mg smectite in the Marathon Valley region, indicating distinct styles of aqueous alteration. The CRISM detections of smectites are based on metal-OH absorptions at approximately 2.3 and 2.4 micron that are at least two times the background noise level.

The Opportunity Rover is currently in its 11th year of operations, exploring the rim of the approximately 22 km wide Noachian-age Endeavour Crater. Opportunity spent its 5th winter season in Cook Haven, a gentle swale along Murray Ridge. Two small rocks serendipitously overturned by rover wheel motions show evidence for aqueous precipitation of sulfates, and interaction with a strong oxidant (e.g., O2) to form a thin, high valence state Mn oxide coating. After the winter, Opportunity headed south to Cape Tribulation and explored Shoemaker formation impact breccias, finding numerous Ca-sulfate veins cutting across outcrops. A key target for Opportunity's measurements has been the Spirit of Saint Louis crater (SoSL), which is approximately 25 m wide, oval in plan view, shallow, flat-floored, and has a slightly raised rim. SoSL crater is surrounded by an apron of bright, polygonally-shaped outcrops and is superimposed on a gentle swale in Cape Tribulation. Rocks in a thin reddish zone on the rim are enriched in hematite, Si, and Ge, and depleted in Fe, relative to surrounding rocks. Apron rocks include an outcrop also enriched in Si and Ge, and slightly depleted in Fe. In general rocks in the crater and apron have elevated S relative to Shoemaker formation breccias, tracking values observed in the Cook Haven and the Hueytown (fracture running perpendicular to Cape Tribulation) outcrops. SoSL crater lies just to the west of Marathon Valley, a key target for exploration by Opportunity because five separate CRISM observations indicate the presence of Fe/Mg smectites on the upper valley floor. Opportunity data show that low relief, relatively bright polygonal outcrops dominate the valley floor where not covered by scree and soil shed from surrounding walls. Initial reconnaissance shows that the outcrops are breccias with compositions similar to the typical SoSL crater apron and floor rocks, although only the very upper portion of the valley has been explored as of August 2015. Pervasive but modest aqueous alteration of Endeavour's rim is implied by the combination of CRISM and Opportunity data, providing insight into early aqueous processes dominated in this location by relatively low water to rock ratios, and at least in part associated with enhanced fluid flow along fractures.

The Glen Torridon (GT) region within Gale crater, Mars, occurs in contact with the southern side of Vera Rubin ridge (VRR), a well‐defined geomorphic feature that is comparatively resistant to erosion. Prior to detailed ground‐based investigation of GT, its geologic relationship with VRR was unknown. Distinct lithologic subunits within the Jura member (Murray formation), which forms the upper part of VRR, made it possible to be also identified within GT. This indicates that the strata pass across the geomorphic divide between regions. Furthermore, the cross‐bedded lower part of the overlying Knockfarril Hill member (Carolyn Shoemaker formation) also occurs within both VRR and GT. Correlation of both units demonstrates that the strata form a continuous stratigraphic succession regardless of large‐scale geomorphic expression. The lithologic change from mudstone (Jura member) to cross‐bedded sandstone (Knockfarril Hill member) heralds a significant shift in paleoenvironment from lacustrine to fluvial. The upper part of the Knockfarril Hill member consists of interbedded mudstone and sandstone that transitions to the overlying finely laminated mudstone of the Glasgow member, and a return to lacustrine deposition. In GT, the Stimson formation unconformably overlies the Glasgow member, where it demarks the southern boundary of GT. Contacts for each stratigraphic unit were defined and transferred to a high‐resolution image base to make a geologic map and cross sections perpendicular to the NE strike. Stratal dips cannot exceed 2° NW to retain the positions of stratigraphic units in the locations they are exposed throughout GT. Plain Language Summary: The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover explored a region called Glen Torridon (GT) that is located on the northwest side of a large sedimentary central mound (Mount Sharp) within Gale crater. This study analyzed the rocks within GT to (a) identify the sedimentary features, (b) determine if or how the sedimentary layers correlate between the Vera Rubin ridge (VRR) and GT regions, (c) interpret ancient environments, (d) generate a geologic map, and (e) discuss the relationship between topography and the exposure of sedimentary layers. Even though the VRR and GT regions are very different in present‐day geomorphology, sedimentary layers correlate across the two regions indicating that the layers belong to a continuous sedimentary succession. Cross‐bedded sandstones of the Knockfarril Hill member represent a change to fluvial from the underlying lake and lake‐margin deposits of the Jura member, which represents a major shift in depositional environment. Packages of layers have distinct characteristics, which allows their distribution to be represented on a map. A geologic cross section limits the tilt of the layers to less than two degrees. We find that caution must be taken when attempting to derive primary stratigraphy only using datasets acquired from orbital platforms.
