One of the negative effects of ferroelectric applications, particularly for electrocaloric effect (ECE) applications, is temperature hysteresis (ΔTHyst). Temperature hysteresis is the difference between the temperatures corresponding to the maximum dielectric permittivity in heating and cooling modes. The value of ΔTHyst is commensurate with the value of the ECE temperature change. The ECE is a phenomenon in which a material shows a reversible temperature change under an applied electric field. The aim of this work is to study the possibilities of temperature hysteresis reduction by varying the ceramic sintering temperature, changing the stoichiometry of BaxSr1-xTiO3 solid solutions, and changing the rate of the heating-cooling cycle. The new xMnAs/(1 − x)PMN–PT (x = 0.2, 0.3) multicaloric composites, consisting of the modified PMN–PT-based relaxor-type ferroelectric ceramics and ferromagnetic compound of MnAs were fabricated, and their structure, magnetic, dielectric properties, and caloric effects were studied. Both components of the multicaloric composite have phase transition temperatures around 315 K, and large electrocaloric (~0.27 K at 20 kV/cm) and magnetocaloric (~13 K at 5 T) effects around this temperature were observed. As expected, composite samples exhibit a decrease in magnetocaloric effect (<1.4 K at 4 T) in comparison with an initial MnAs magnetic component (6.7 K at 4 T), but some interesting phenomena associated with magnetoelectric interaction between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric components were observed. Thus, a composite with x = 0.2 exhibits a double maximum in isothermal magnetic entropy changes, while a composite with x = 0.3 demonstrates behavior more similar to MnAs. Based on the results of experiments, the model of the multicaloric effect in an MnAs/PMN–PT composite was developed and different scenario observations of multicaloric response were modeled. In the framework of the proposed model, it was shown that boosting of caloric effect could be achieved by (1) compilation of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric components with large caloric effects in selected mass ratio and phase transition temperature; and (2) choosing of magnetic and electric field coapplying protocol. The 0.3MnAs/0.7PMN–PT composite was concluded to be the optimal multicaloric composite and a phase shift ∆φ = −π/4 between applied manetic fields can provide a synergetic caloric effect at a working point of 316 K. We report on the solution of the heat equation, which describes the electrocaloric effect in a ferroelectric layer. The dependence of the heat flux at the layer interface and the thermodynamic efficiency on the shape and frequency of the applied pulse is investigated. According to the calculations, the dependence of the efficiency on the frequency for a rectangular and sinusoidal pulse has a markedly different character. The maximum efficiency at 0.74 is achieved by a sinusoidal impulse at a frequency of 77.6 mHz. The new approach allows for better optimization of the cooling system. To model a heat switch, it is proposed to use a change in the Biot number over time. Theoretical calculations are compared with experimental results for a 0.5-mm-thick barium titanate plate. The maximum heat flux that can be created for a given plate under an electric field of 2 MV/m with an ideal heat switch turned out to be equal 120.72 W/m2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiferroic materials are widely used in microelectronics because they are sensitive to elastic, magnetic, and electric fields and there is an intrinsic coupling between them. In particular, transition metal-doped BaTiO3 is considered as a viable multiferroic because of the simultaneous presence of ferroelectricity and magnetism. In this work, we study the electrical and thermal properties of Mn-doped BaTiO3 ceramics that can be used for multicaloric applications. We found that Mn doping leads to the broadening and shifting of the phase transition accompanied with simultaneous decrease of latent heat and entropy. Mn doping causes a decrease in the bulk resistivity while contact resistance remains intact. Doped ceramics can withstand high electric fields (up to 40 kV/cm) and exhibit linear I-V characteristics followed by the Schottky limited current in contrast to earlier observations. We synthesized star-shaped pentagonal microcrystals of boron carbide with an extremely low carbon content (~5%), from m-carborane under high pressure (7 GPa) and high temperature (1370–1670 K). These crystals have five-fold symmetry and grow in the shape of stars. A 5-fold symmetry in large micron-sized crystals is extremely rare making this a striking observation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
