A freshwater prawn M. sundaicum, is an obligate species to acidic peat swamp. Up to the present, M. Sundaicum has only been reported in the West Kalimantan, the Riau Archipelago, and Jambi Provinces in Indonesia. The aim of this research is to determine the distribution and habitat preferences of peat swamp prawn in Selat Panjang Island, Riau Province, Indonesia. The samples were collected in seven peat swamp rivers by hand net. The study yielded one hundred specimens. The acidic peat swamp is a perfect habitat for M. sundaicum. This study provided the basic information about peat swamp prawn in Selat Panjang Island, especially their distribution and habitat preferences.

The mainland of Sulawesi is well known for its high diversity of freshwater shrimps. However, many small islands surrounding Sulawesi have been neglected and have not been unexplored. Here, we report on the freshwater shrimps of the Banggai Archipelago, eastern Sulawesi, based on field collections between 2017 and 2019 on four islands, Peleng, Labobo, Bangkurung, and Banggai. Eleven species were found: Caridina brevidactyla J. Roux, 1920, Caridina brevicarpalis De Man, 1892, Caridina gracilipes De Man, 1892, Caridina gracilirostris De Man, 1892, Caridina serratirostris De Man, 1892, Caridina typus H. Milne Edwards, 1837, Caridina weberi De Man, 1892, Macrobrachium australe (Guérin-Méneville, 1838), Macrobrachium equidens (Dana, 1852), Macrobrachium lar (Fabricius, 1798), and Macrobrachium latidactylus (Thallwitz, 1891). One species, C. brevidactyla, is a newly recorded from Sulawesi. Knowledge of the diversity of the freshwater shrimp fauna can contribute to the conservation of species and their habitats.

The objectives of this study were to reveal ecological preferences and distribution of all species of Caridina found in Lake Lindu and their catchment area. Specimens from 39 sampling sites were caught using tray net and hand net. There are three species of Caridina found in the lake system, i.e. Caridina linduensis, Caridina kaili and Caridina dali. There is no overlapping distribution among the species. Caridina kaili is a true riverine species and it is never encountered sympatric with C. dali nor C. linduensis. This species is abundant in streams and ditches with moderate flow running water and gravel–cobble substrate. It is mainly spread within streams west to the lake. Both C. dali and C. linduensis can be found in the lake and streams with very slow current to almost stagnant water, muddy sand substrate and associated with roots of water plants and leaf litter. However, C. dali is never occurred together with C. linduensis and they are less abundant compare to C. kaili. Distribution of Caridina spp. in Lake Lindu is probably affected by the temperature of their habitats and the occurrence of introduced fish such as Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and an alien riceland prawn (Macrobrachium lanchesteri). These introduced and alien species can have the potency to become predators or competitors for the Caridina spp. It is also the first record for M. lanchesteri present in Lake Lindu.

Caridina sulawesi Cai and Ng, 2009, an endemic freshwater shrimp, has been described based on the type locality in Maros, South Sulawesi. Surprisingly, this species was reported from two rivers in Central Sulawesi. Here, we provided the data about ecological aspects and the recent distribution of the species on Sulawesi Island. The specimens were collected using a hand net in 2018 and 2019, from a small natural spring in Bobo and two creeks in Napu. Water temperature varied between 17 to 22°C. Our finding shows C. sulawesi inhabited almost all freshwater habitat exclude lake system, with high variation in elevation and water temperatures.

Caridina clandestina, new species, a riverine, endemic freshwater shrimp is described from the upper reaches of Lariang River watershed at Napu Valley in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The species is distinct in showing dimorphic chelae on the first and second pereiopods related to different feeding strategies (scraping vs. filter feeding) but related to neither sex nor age. Morphologically, this new species is similar to C. longidigita Cai & Wowor, 2007 and both morphologically and molecularly closely related to the C. pareparensis species group. However, the unusual dimorphic trophic morphology, the morphology of male sexual appendages, and genetic results (mtDNA) place the new species within the western Sulawesi clade of Caridina and distinguish the new species from all known congeners. Sulawesi is a biodiversity hotspot and is home to many endemic amphibian species. For some of these endemic species, information regarding their rate of emergence, conservation status and ecology are lacking. Therefore, in the present study, we provide descriptions of some amphibian species, including details on habitat and distribution, from the Lake Kalimpa'a region of Lore Lindu National Park, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Observations were made during two field surveys (June 2016 and April 2017) using standard visual and acoustic encounter survey methods. Seven species of frog from five families were found, and six of them were endemic. In general, amphibian habitat selection was influenced by the availability of water. Some species have limited habitat availability, which may make them susceptible to habitat alteration. These represent the species at a higher threat state. These results suggest that the risk of extinction for these species has probably been underestimated previously, and so these species require more developed conservation efforts to protect them. The information presented herein is expected to form the basis for determining different species' conservation status, and developing management practice for amphibians in Sulawesi.
