IntroductionWith the continuous growth of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) aquaculture, appropriate management of nutrient-rich waste streams from both land- and sea-based production has become increasingly important. Following a circular approach, nutrients contained in aquaculture sludge can be utilized for biomass production of the polychaete Hediste diversicolor. While the potential for upcycling nutrients has been established previously, this study aimed to assess nutrient flows in H. diversicolor fed aquaculture sludge as understanding these will be crucial for optimizing future large-scale production of this species.Materials and methodsWe investigated the effect of low and high feed supply of smolt sludge on the nutrient flows of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in H. diversicolor on an individual level. Hereby we assessed ingestion, defecation, excretion, respiration, and uptake for growth.Results and discussionNutrient flows differed between the nutrients C, N, and P in the high feed supply group where C uptake for growth was significantly higher than N and P uptake, and N uptake was significantly higher than P uptake. In contrast, no significant differences were observed in the low feed supply group. In the high feed supply group, most of the ingested C, N, and P by H. diversicolor was allocated to uptake for growth (76% C, 83% N, 85% P) with smaller proportions allocated to defecation (7% C, 7% N, 11% P) and respiration/excretion (18% C, 9% N, 5% P). The results from the low feed supply group suggest insufficient nutrient supply as most ingested C was allocated to respiration (84%), while most N was expended on uptake for growth (45%), and ingested P was either taken up for growth (58%) or spent on defecation (34%). Overall, nutrient uptake reflected the smolt sludge composition rather than nutrient requirements for H. diversicolor, which may be a short-term effect and needs to be investigated further. The flow of nutrients was strongly affected by feed supply, as ingestion, defecation, excretion, and uptake for growth were significantly higher in the high feed supply group than in the low feed supply group.

In this paper, we discuss novel and existing archaeological data from the San Bartolomé de Rebordáns site (Tui, Spain) that suggest the importance of Tude as a place of power in the Late Antique Sueve Gallaecia (411–585 CE) and later, in the Iberian Visigoth kingdom (585–711 CE). Here, we apply a combination of complementary techniques: archaeological survey, absolute radiocarbon dating, osteological and stable isotope analyses of the human remains, and the revision of the available contextual information. We recovered the remains of seven individuals with poor preservation and accelerated degradation from the Late Antique necropolis. These individuals were identified here as possible members of the social elite due to their archaeological context, becoming the first-time human remains relative to this social status within this chronology have been detected in NW Iberian Peninsula. The isotopic data obtained is broadly compared with contemporaneous sites along the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands for a complete interpretation. Additionally, we generate a simple routed and concentration-dependent Bayesian model to predict the source of dietary carbon in consumers, from which we calculate the marine radiocarbon reservoir effect. Despite the low number of individuals analysed, we argue that our results are of great archaeological significance as this represents the first biomolecular approach to the Late Antique (5th–8th centuries CE) social elite individuals from the northwestern and probably the whole Iberian Peninsula.

IntroductionFocusing on circular bioeconomy and finding solutions for managing finite and scarce resources such as phosphorus are issues that need to be addressed across sectors to attain food security. Land-based aquaculture of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) smolt and post-smolt results in a large output of aquaculture sludge. These nutrient-rich side streams from aquaculture production constitute a valuable resource for cultivation of polychaetes Hediste diversicolor. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of H. diversicolor to upcycle carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contained in aquaculture sludge from Norwegian salmon production.Material and methodsWe investigated the effect of two diets, smolt sludge and post-smolt sludge, which were supplied at four different feed levels, on the gain of C, N, and P in H. diversicolor and established uptake rates for the upcycling of these nutrients. Additionally, we examined how different feed composition (type of diet) and supply (feel level) influenced C, N, and P content as well as the elemental ratios of H. diversicolor.Results and discussionPolychaetes fed with both types of sludge were shown to incorporate C, N, and P from their diets into biomass. Incorporation of C, N, and P in polychaete biomass was highest at the highest feed levels, following specific growth rates. Uptake of diet C, N, and P into polychaete biomass was similar for both diets and across feed levels. On average, C and N uptake rates amounted to 2–10% and 2–15%, respectively, while values for P uptake were lower at 0.5–1.5%. C, N, and P content of polychaetes was not affected by different diets or feed levels while the C:N ratio increased with increasing feed supply. Overall, we found that H. diversicolor can successfully take up nutrients contained in aquaculture sludge and thus can be beneficial for upcycling of side streams from Atlantic salmon production.

Advancements in cancer have increased survival rates leading to a paradigm shift such that cancer is considered a chronic disease, necessitating an evaluation of our understanding of cancer survivorship (CS). For this purpose, a comprehensive literature search was performed, using CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PUBMED from 2000–2021. Drawing from the concepts in the literature, salient factors that affect CS across cancer populations were identified and a proposed model was developed. This paper describes the Cancer Survivorship Model (CSM). The CSM represents predisposing factors for survivors and survivorship’s acute, extended, and long-term phases, influencing factors: treatment and maintenance (medical/psychosocial care), well-being, influencing aspects (life-changing experience, uncertainty, prioritizing life, wellness management, and collateral damage), and social relationship factors that impact survivors’ symptom burdens and overall survivorship experience (health outcomes and quality of life). A case study demonstrates the CSM utility. Future application of the model holds promise for improving the quality of survivorship and informing research and clinical practice to promote and optimize survivors’ outcomes throughout the evolving survivorship.

Les progrès réalisés dans la lutte contre le cancer ont augmenté les taux de survie, entraînant un tel changement de paradigme que le cancer est maintenant considéré comme une maladie chronique; il nous faut donc évaluer notre connaissance de la survie au cancer (SC). C’est dans cette optique que les auteurs ont procédé à une recension exhaustive des écrits dans les référentiels CINAHL, MEDLINE et PUBMED de 2000 et 2021. En s’appuyant sur les concepts étudiés dans la littérature, ils ont répertorié les principaux facteurs qui influencent la survie au cancer dans l’ensemble des populations atteintes et ont proposé un modèle. Le présent article décrit ce modèle de survie au cancer (MSC). Le MSC prend en compte les facteurs prédisposant à la survie ainsi que les facteurs d’influence en jeu dans les trois phases de survie (aiguë, prolongée et permanente), à savoir le traitement et le traitement d’entretien (soins médicaux et psychosociaux), le bien-être, et d’autres éléments d’influence (expériences entraînant de profonds changements, incertitude, établissement de priorités, gestion du bien-être et conséquences indirectes) de même que les facteurs liés aux relations sociales qui jouent sur le fardeau des symptômes des survivants ainsi que l’expérience globale de la survie (état de santé et qualité de vie). Une étude de cas a d’ailleurs montré l’utilité du MSC. L’application du modèle est prometteuse pour l’avenir, tant pour améliorer la qualité de la survivance que pour guider la recherche et la pratique clinique en vue de favoriser et d’optimiser la bonne santé des survivants à long terme.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is linked with several neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, either as a comorbid condition or as a risk factor. We aimed to expand the evidence by examining associations with a broad range of brain disorders (psychiatric and neurological disorders, excluding late-onset neurodegenerative disorders), while also accounting for the temporal order of T2DM and these brain disorders. Methods In a population-based cohort-study of 1,883,198 Danish citizens, born 1955–1984 and followed until end of 2016, we estimated associations between T2DM and 16 brain disorders first diagnosed between childhood and mid-adulthood. We calculated odds ratios (OR) and hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) in temporally ordered analyses (brain disorder diagnosis after T2DM and vice versa), adjusted for sex, age, follow-up, birth year, and parental factors. Results A total of 67,660 (3.6%) of the study population were identified as T2DM cases after age 30 and by a mean age of 45 years (SD of 8 years). T2DM was associated with most psychiatric disorders. Strongest associations were seen with other (i.e. non-anorectic) eating disorders (OR [95% CI]: 2.64 [2.36–2.94]) and schizophrenia spectrum disorder (2.73 [2.63–2.84]). Among neurological disorders especially inflammatory brain diseases (1.73 [1.57–1.91]) and epilepsy (1.67 [1.60–1.75]) were associated with T2DM. Most associations remained in both directions in the temporally ordered analyses. For most psychiatric disorders, associations were strongest in females. Conclusions T2DM was associated with several psychiatric and neurological disorders, and most associations were consistently found for both temporal order of disorders. This suggests a shared etiology of T2DM and those brain disorders. This study can form the starting point for studies directed at further elucidating potential causal links between disorders and shared biological mechanisms.

IntroductionSustainable growth of the salmon aquaculture industry is highly dependent on the availability of new feed resources as well as improved management and utilization of waste streams from production. Polychaetes are capable of recapturing and recycling valuable biomolecules contained in aquaculture sludge and at the same time constitute a possible resource for aquafeeds.Material and methodsIn this study, the potential of Hediste diversicolor (OF Müller, 1776) to recover nutrients and energy contained aquaculture sludge was evaluated. Hereby, the effect of two different diets, smolt and post-smolt sludge, and different feed levels on polychaete growth, and biochemical and elemental composition was assessed.Results and discussionSurvival ranged from 80-90%, independent of treatment. Specific growth rates at the highest feed levels were significantly higher than at the lowest feed levels and growth was not affected by the type of diet. Similarly, total lipid and total fatty acid content of polychaetes were positively correlated with feed level while the type of diet had a limited effect. Fatty acid composition of polychaetes reflected feed levels: in both diet groups, polychaetes at lower feed levels showed a higher percentage of saturated fatty acids; monounsaturated fatty acids increased with increased feed supply for smolt sludge-fed group and polychaetes fed post-smolt sludge showed increased polyunsaturated fatty acid content with increasing feed levels. Neither diet nor feed levels affected protein content and amino acid composition of polychaetes. In conclusion, H. diversicolor could be successfully cultivated on both smolt and post-smolt sludge and was rich in proteins and lipids as well as essential amino and fatty acids. The species can be considered a promising candidate for recycling valuable nutrients from different types of side streams salmon aquaculture.

BackgroundAdherence to care plans is a major issue in health care systems. Improved adherence has several potential benefits such as ensuring treatment effectiveness and control of chronic diseases. There is currently a lack of tools to maximize treatment adherence in an integrated manner, that is, covering multiple aspects of patients’ health continuously throughout their medical care. To ensure better adherence, such tools must meet the needs of patients with chronic conditions as well as those of health care professionals. Acknowledging the health issues associated with nonadherence to treatment, an industry-research-clinical partnership aims to adapt a digital platform—facilitating patient-health care professional interactions—to improve therapeutic adherence in patients with chronic illnesses. The platform allows for exchanges between patients and health care professionals to facilitate the timing of medication use or chronic disease management and maximize patient adherence. ObjectiveThis study aims to (1) identify the needs of patients living with a chronic condition and their health professionals concerning their interactions regarding treatment; (2) codevelop an adaptation of an interactive patient-professional platform that meets the needs identified; and (3) then test the platform and document its effects and acceptability in a clinical setting. MethodsThe study will use a creative design thinking process based on the needs expressed by users (patients and health professionals) concerning treatment adherence for chronic diseases (eg, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, depression and anxiety, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). A mixed method evaluation research design will be used to develop and evaluate the platform. Qualitative data will be used to assess user needs and acceptability of the platform, and quantitative data will provide the necessary insights to document its effects. ResultsTechnological development of the platform has been completed. Recruitment for the first part of Phase 1 started in May 2022. The results of this project to codevelop an interprofessional digital platform to increase therapeutic adherence will be relevant to clinicians and managers seeking contemporary solutions that support patient adherence to treatment for chronic diseases. These results will enable optimal use of the platform and identify areas for improvement in interactive patient-health care professional apps. ConclusionsThe adoption of an interactive digital platform to facilitate effective exchanges between patients and health care professionals in primary care settings could improve adherence to treatment. The platform tested in this project takes a first step in this direction by ensuring that the technological product is developed according to the needs of patients as well as the health professionals who are likely to use it. Abstract The lack of translation from basic research into new medicines is a major challenge in CNS drug development. The need to use novel approaches relying on (i) patient clustering based on neurobiology irrespective to symptomatology and (ii) quantitative biomarkers focusing on evolutionarily preserved neurobiological systems allowing back-translation from clinical to nonclinical research has been highlighted. Here we sought to evaluate the mismatch negativity (MMN) response in schizophrenic (SZ) patients, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, and age-matched healthy controls. To evaluate back-translation of the MMN response, we developed EEG-based procedures allowing the measurement of MMN-like responses in a rat model of schizophrenia and a mouse model of AD. Our results indicate a significant MMN attenuation in SZ but not in AD patients. Consistently with the clinical findings, we observed a significant attenuation of deviance detection (~104.7%) in rats subchronically exposed to phencyclidine, while no change was observed in APP/PS1 transgenic mice when compared to wild type. This study provides new insight into the cross-disease evaluation of the MMN response. Our findings suggest further investigations to support the identification of neurobehavioral subtypes that may help patients clustering for precision medicine intervention. Furthermore, we provide evidence that MMN could be used as a quantitative/objective efficacy biomarker during both preclinical and clinical stages of SZ drug development.

Abstract In the context of increasing evidence of plate interface coupling variability in subduction zones, there is a need to extend the short time window given by instrumental data and to gather data over multiple time and spatial scales. We hence investigated the long‐term topography on Barbuda island, located in the northern part of the Lesser Antilles, west of the Caribbean subduction zone. Following pioneering work using a set of marine terraces on the eastern side of the island, we performed the first U‐Th dating on 10 corals in growth position from the lowest terrace, for which the highest relative sea‐level (RSL) indicator is found at 9 ± 1 m above the mean sea level. We find that this terrace corresponds to the Last Interglacial (LIG) (ages between 122.8 ± 0.3 ka and 128.1 ± 0.3 ka) and we estimate a paleo RSL of 7 ± 2 m above the current mean sea level. The present elevation of the LIG shoreline on Barbuda might imply tectonics as an additional mechanism to eustatic sea level, mantle dynamic topography and glacial isostatic adjustment. East‐west morphological asymmetry of Barbuda and difference in LIG shoreline elevation between Barbuda and Antigua suggest a regional tectonic process. As with the proposed westward tilting from the forearc to the volcanic arc of the Guadeloupe archipelago, vertical deformation on Barbuda could be related to plate‐scale subduction processes. Long‐term uplift of Barbuda might be related to the accumulation of residual coseismic deformation not fully recovered by interseismic subsidence and the corresponding seismogenic segment would extend below the Moho.

Background: The past decade has witnessed an increase in informal and bottom up driven ?she-for-she? efforts, often using social media, to promote the advancement of women in medicine. Yet, this area of research is nascent with limited information on the use of social media platforms by female physicians, especially in the international medical arena. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of a social media platform by a diverse group of female physicians in an international setting. Materials and Methods: The study used a mixed methods approach, including quantitative descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis of the content of posts of a women physicians WhatsApp group during a 1-year time period (June 1, 2018?May 31, 2019). Results: The group consisted of 122 members with 4897 posts during the 1-year time period. Nine themes were identified including requests for medical information, logistics, personal recommendations, promotion, celebration, community engagement, education, women's empowerment, and employment inquiries. Engagement was high with 72% of members posting during the last 30 days of analysis and 92% of questions posted receiving a response, often within minutes. There were no instances of unprofessional social media behavior. Conclusions: The social media platform was effective in enabling female physicians to expand networks, exchange ideas, share scientific information, celebrate accomplishments, and provide support to colleagues. Creating a social media forum for women physicians may be an effective tool to foster a network of support and community.

BackgroundSocial media has emerged as an effective means of information sharing and community building among health professionals. The utility of these platforms is likely heightened during times of health system crises and global uncertainty. Studies have demonstrated that physicians’ social media platforms serve to bridge the gap of information between on-the-ground experiences of health care workers and emerging knowledge. ObjectiveThe primary aim of this study was to characterize the use of a physician WhatsApp (WhatsApp LLC) group chat during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. MethodsThrough the lens of the social network theory, we performed a qualitative content analysis of the posts of a women physician WhatsApp group located in the United Arab Emirates between February 1, 2020, and May 31, 2020, that is, during the initial surge of COVID-19 cases. ResultsThere were 6101 posts during the study period, which reflected a 2.6-fold increase in platform use when compared with platform use in the year prior. A total of 8 themes and 9 subthemes were described. The top 3 uses of the platform were requests for information (posts: 2818/6101, 46.2%), member support and promotion (posts: 988/6101, 16.2%), and information sharing (posts: 896/6101, 14.7%). A substantial proportion of posts were related to COVID-19 (2653/6101, 43.5%), with the most popular theme being requests for logistical (nonmedical) information. Among posts containing COVID-19–related medical information, it was notable that two-thirds (571/868, 65.8%) of these posts were from public mass media or unverified sources. ConclusionsHealth crises can potentiate the use of social media platforms among physicians. This reflects physicians’ tendency to turn to these platforms for information sharing and community building purposes. However, important questions remain regarding the accuracy and credibility of the information shared. Our findings suggest that the training of physicians in social media practices and information dissemination may be needed.
