The paper presents the results of a systematic microfluidic study of the application of nanosuspensions for enhanced oil recovery. For the first time, approximately a dozen nanosuspensions prepared by the dilution of silica sols as displacement fluids were considered. The concentration of nanoparticles in the suspensions varied from 0.125 to 2 wt%, and their size ranged from 10 to 35 nm. Furthermore, the silica sols under consideration differed in their compositions of functional groups and pH. The effects of concentration, nanoparticle size, fluid flow rate, and the viscosity of the displaced oil were investigated using microfluidic technology. The microfluidic experiments demonstrated that the application of nanosuspensions for water flooding has significant potential. The efficiency of oil displacement by nanosuspensions was found to increase significantly (up to 30%) with the increasing concentration and decreasing average size of nanoparticles. The application of nanosuspensions for the enhancement of oil recovery is most appropriate for reservoirs with highly viscous oil.

Microfluidic chips with porous structures are used to study the flow of oil-containing emulsion in the rock. Such chips can be made from polydimethylsiloxane by casting into a master mold. At the initial stages of research, fast and cheap prototyping of a large number of different master molds is often required. It is proposed to use milling to make a channeled surface on a polymethyl methacrylate plate, from which a negative image should be taken, which is the master mold for casting positive polydimethylsiloxane chips in it. Several epoxy compositions have been tested to make this master mold. The main requirement in the search for the material was the exact replication of the geometry and sufficiently low adhesion to polymethyl methacrylate and polydimethylsiloxane for removing the product with minimal damage to the mold. It was possible to make master molds from all the materials used, but with defects and various degrees of damage. One of the epoxy compositions was found suitable for making a master mold with many elements simulating the grains of a porous medium (height to width ratio 2:3). The developed method makes it possible to use polydimethylsiloxane for prototyping chips simulating the porous structure of an oil rock.

The article presents the results of experimental study on the effect of additives of silicon oxide nanoparticles, as well as single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the colloidal stability and thermal degradation process of hydrocarbon-based drilling fluids. Such a comprehensive study of hydrocarbon-based drilling fluids was carried out for the first time. The effect of the concentration and size of silicon oxide nanoparticles, as well as the type and concentration of nanotubes on the colloidal stability of drilling fluids during thermal aging tests at different temperatures, was investigated. The nanoparticle size varied from 18 to 70 nm, and the concentration ranged from 0.25 to 2 wt.%. Single-walled and multi-walled nanotubes were studied, whose concentration varied from 0.01 to 0.5 wt.%. The thermal aging temperature varied from 30 to 150 °C. According to the results of the investigation, it was shown that the temperature stability of hydrocarbon-based drilling fluids can be significantly improved by adding the above substances. At the same time, it was shown that the use of single-walled nanotubes for thermal stabilization of drilling fluids was several times more effective than the use of multi-walled nanotubes, and tens of times more effective than the use of spherical silicon oxide nanoparticles.

Wetting hysteresis is the most important characteristic of microfluidic chips for modeling multiphase flows in rocks, including for oil production problems. Plasma modification of surface wetting characteristics is well studied, but there is a problem of stabilizing the resulting surface for use in a liquid hydrocarbon media. In this work, a simple and accessible technology for modifying the surface of PDMS and glass using a dielectric barrier discharge in a chamber based on the d’Arsonval apparatus has been developed. The surface wetting hysteresis for PDMS and glass was studied as a function of the plasma treatment time. It is shown that with the help of plasma treatment it is possible to change the wetting angles of the walls of microfluidic chips in a very wide range, thereby simulating the conditions of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic rocks. At the same time, PDMS has the widest possible range of changes in the wetting angle; the advancing contact angle decreases from 120° to 10°; receding contact angle—from 70° to 0° during plasma treatment. It has been shown that plasma treatment of a microfluidic chip, together with a 30 min primary extraction with oil and salt water, leads to a significant change in the wetting characteristics of its surface. This in total leads to an increase in the oil displacement efficiency from the chip by about 10%. In general, the results of the study showed that plasma surface treatment for the hydrophilization of microfluidic chips is a simple and affordable technology for controlling the wetting characteristics of microfluidic chips. PDMS in this case is a promising material.

Global estimates for our remaining capacity to exploit developed oil fields indicate that the currently recoverable oil (light oil) will last for approximately 50 years. This necessitates the development of viscous and superviscous oil fields, which will further compensate for the loss of easily produced oil. In situ combustion is the most promising production method, which allows for increased oil recovery from a reservoir. This being the case, this study provides an overview of global trends regarding the research and implementation of the method under consideration, in order to promote understanding of its applicability and effectiveness. The background to the development of the method is discussed in detail, illustrating the growing interest of researchers in its study. Cases of both successful as well as inefficient implementations of this method in real oil fields are considered. The main focus of the article is to investigate the influence of the parent rock and catalysts on the combustion process, as this is a new and actively developing area in the study of enhanced oil recovery using in situ combustion. Geological surveys, in addition to experimental and numerical studies, are considered to be the main methods that are used to investigate processes during in situ combustion. The analysis that we carried out led us to understand that the processes which occur during the combustion of heavy oil are practically unpredictable and, therefore, poorly understood. The specificity of the oil composition under consideration depends on the field, which can lead to a change in the required temperature regimes for its production. This indicates that there exists multiple specific applications for the method under consideration, each requiring additional full studies into both the fractional composition of oil and its reservoirs. The article also considers various technologies for implementing the in situ combustion method, such as ND-ISC, THAITM, COSH, CAGD, and SAGD. However, the literature review has shown that none of the technologies presented is widely used, due to the lack of an evidence base for their successful application in the field. Moreover, it should be noted that this method has no limits associated with the oil occurrence depth. This technology can be implemented in thin reservoirs, as well as in flooded, clayey, sandy, and carbonate reservoirs. The review we have presented can be considered as a guide for further research into the development of global solutions for using the proposed method.

This paper presents a study of the influence of various factors on heat transfer in microchannels associated with the use of the velocity slip (including thermal creep) and temperature jump boundary conditions on the walls. These factors can affect heat transfer both individually and together, but their effect on heat transfer in the microchannel has still not been practically studied. An attempt to eliminate this lack was made in this paper. It was shown that as the slip length increases the value of the heat flux density increases by about 40% and the average heat transfer coefficient increases by about 50% compare to no-slip conditions. Wherein, the pressure drop significantly decreased, that is, two positive effects took place simultaneously. The presence of thermal creep also reduced the pressure drop in the channel and increased the average heat transfer coefficient, but this effect was significantly less than the effect of the slip length. On the other hand, the taking into account of a temperature jump on the wall led to a certain increase in the pressure drop, but the heat transfer coefficient increased.

Currently, thermal power plants operating on hydrocarbon fuels (gas, fuel oil, peat, shale, etc.) are one of the main sources of electricity. An effective and promising method for suppressing harmful emissions (NOx, carbon oxides, soot) from the combustion of fossil fuels is the injection of steam into the combustion chamber. The influence of various mathematical submodels was studied on the accuracy of the numerical simulation of the process of n-heptane combustion in a laboratory burner with steam additive to the reaction zone as a promising chemical engineering method for the disposal of substandard liquid fuels and combustible waste with the production of thermal energy. The problem was solved in a three-dimensional stationary formulation. Systematic verification of these submodels, and a comparison of the results of the calculation with the experimental data obtained were carried out. The comparison with the experimental data was carried out for gas components and temperature distribution at the burner outlet; high agreement of the results was achieved. Optimal submodels of the methodology for calculating the process of fuel combustion in a jet of steam were determined. The best agreement with the experiment data was obtained using the EDC model in combination with a mechanism consisting of 60 components and 305 elementary reactions. More correct simulation results were obtained using the RSM turbulence model and the DO radiation model.

Multiphase flows in porous media are widespread in nature and various technologies. One of the most common examples of this kind of task is the task of recovering oil from the rock. This article describes a mathematical model of the flow of a two-phase (immiscible) liquid based on a new approach of network hydrodynamics for a highly branched microchannel medium (simulating a porous space in the rock). The coupling of the flow and pressure fields in the network is performed using a well-proven SIMPLE algorithm in CFD problems; this approach allows us to use effective approaches to modeling 3D tasks. Phase transfer over the network is carried out by an explicit method with an adaptive time step. The article presents the results of verification of the model, with analytical calculations and in comparison with the results of experimental studies. As an experiment, the displacement of oil from a microchip (Dolomite: 3200284) simulating a porous medium was simulated. The good qualitative and quantitative compliance with the results calculated and the results of the experiment show the correct functioning of the model.

This article presents a new approach to determining the viscosity of Newtonian fluid. The approach is based on the analysis of the secondary Dean flow in a curved channel. The study of the flow patterns of water and aqueous solutions of glycerin in a microfluidic chip with a U-microchannel was carried out. The advantages of a microfluidic viscometer based on a secondary Dean flow are its simplicity, quickness, and high accuracy in determining the viscosity coefficient of a liquid. A viscosity image in a short movie represents fluid properties. It is revealed that the viscosity coefficient can be determined by the dependence of the recirculation angle of the secondary Dean flow. The article provides a correlation between the Dean number and the flow recirculation angle. The results of the field experiment, presented in the article, correlate with the data obtained using computational fluid dynamics and allow for selecting parameters to create microfluidic viscometers with a U-shaped microchannel.

The essential advantages of microfluidic studies are the excellent visualization of the processes of oil displacement from the porous medium model, simple cleaning, and the possibility of the repeated use of the microfluidic chip. The present article deals with the process of oil displacement by suspension flooding using a microfluidic chip, simulating a porous medium, and the suspensions of silicon dioxide nanoparticles (22 nm). The mass concentration of nanoparticles in suspensions ranged from 0.1 to 2 wt%. Five mass concentrations (0.125 wt%, 0.25 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 1 wt% and 2 wt%) were considered. The article presents the experimental photographs of the oil displacement process by water and SiO2 suspension. It is shown that, with the increasing concentration of nanoparticles, the oil recovery factor increases. A significant effect is observed at 0.5 wt% concentration of nanoparticles. It is shown that the increase in oil recovery during flooding by SiO2 suspension with the maximum concentration was 16%.

In this paper, we present the results of a systematic numerical study of the flow and mixing modes of fluids in micromixers of various configurations, in particular, an analysis of passive micromixers, the most widely used in practice, as well as the main methods to intensify mixing. The advantages of microstructure reactors can significantly reduce reaction times and increase productivity compared to traditional bulk reactors. Four different geometries of micromixers, including the straight T-shaped microchannel, were considered. The effect of the geometrical patterns of micromixers, as well as of the Reynolds number on flow regimes and mixing efficiency were analyzed. The Reynolds number varied from 1 to 300. Unlike other studies, the efficiency of the considered mixers was for the first time compared with the cost of pressure loss during pumping. As a result, the efficiency of the most optimal micromixer in terms of hydraulic mixing and the optimal operation ranges were determined. It was shown that the maximum normalized mixing efficiency in the entire range of Re numbers was noted for mixer, in which a vortex-based intensification of mixing occurs due to the flow swirling in cylindrical chambers. This mixer allows mixing the fluids 600 times more efficiently than a straight T-mixer, while all other conditions being equal.
