1. Risk of Periodontitis in Adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Cohort Study of 81,055 Participants

Abstract

Objectives: Previous studies have demonstrated poor oral hygiene in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the association between ADHD and periodontitis is still unclear. Methods: In all, 16,211 adolescents with ADHD and 162,110 age- and sex-matched controls participated in the study between 2001 and 2011. To identify the occurrence of periodontitis, the participants were followed up till the end of 2011. Confounding factors, including smoking, diabetes, and depressive disorder, were assessed and adjusted in the Cox regression models. Results: Adolescents with ADHD (HR: 2.29) were more likely to develop periodontitis later in life than controls. We additionally observed the beneficial effect of atomoxetine (HR: 0.42) on the periodontitis risk among adolescents with ADHD. However, this finding should be interpreted cautiously given the small sample (n = 290) of children taking atomoxetine in the present study. Conclusions: ADHD is an independent risk factor for subsequent periodontitis development. Oral health should be closely monitored in adolescents with ADHD. Future investigation of the shared pathomechanisms between periodontitis and ADHD is warranted.

2. A Mobile Contextualized Educational Game Framework with ChatGPT Interactive Scaffolding for Employee Ethics Training

Abstract

Technologies like ChatGPT and other AI tools have impacted learning by giving students more chances to ask questions and explore knowledge. The inclusion of Non-Player Characters (NPCs) as scaffolding in game-based situated learning activities can have a positive impact on learning. The application of ChatGPT to role-playing has potential; therefore, this study designed a "ChatGPT-based NPCs scaffolding Workflow Framework" and used it as the basis for designing and evaluating an educational game for employee ethics training with empirical evidence. This study had 61 participants, divided into a document scaffolding group (n = 32) and a ChatGPT-based NPC group (n = 29) and examined the learning achievement, flow, motivation, and anxiety in the two groups. The results showed that the designs of both groups benefited learning achievement, and both groups could maintain a certain level of high motivation and engagement. Through qualitatively analyzing the content of students' discussions with NPCs, it was found that there is potential for NPC-assisted learning through ChatGPT. Overall, this study explored the efficacy and limitations of using ChatGPT-based NPCs as scaffolding in game-based learning and found that it is extensible. We also present a framework for the design of ChatGPT-based NPCs scaffolding mechanism.

3. Predicting Students' Genuine Learning Interest in Socio-Scientific Issues within an Engaged Learning Context

Abstract

This study investigated the predictive effect of 11th grade Taiwanese students' (N = 878) self-assessed critical thinking, group participation self-efficacy, and active learning on their genuine learning interest (GLI) in socio-scientific issues (SSI). Results showed that active learning had a direct effect on GLI, while critical thinking and group participation self-efficacy had indirect effects on GLI as mediated by active learning. Critical thinking showed a significant direct effect on active learning, and a significant indirect effect on active learning that was mediated by group participation self-efficacy.

4. Investigating seafood substitution problems and consequences in Taiwan using molecular barcoding and deep microbiome profiling

Abstract

Abstract Seafood is commonly seen in cuisines of the Asia–Pacific regions. The rates and consequences of seafood substitution frauds in Taiwan were elusive. To address this, we conducted a consumer-centered study, collecting seafood dishes and cooking materials from restaurants and markets easily accessible to the residents in Taiwan. Seafood substitutions were evaluated using DNA barcodes in the mitochondrial MT-CO1 gene. Among the 127 samples collected, 24 samples were mislabeled (18.9%, 95% Confidence interval [CI] = [12.5–26.8%]). The mislabel rates vary in different fish and product types (snapper [84.6%, 54.6–98.1%], cod [25%, 5.5–57.2%], swordfish [16.7%, 2.1–48.4%], cobia [16.7%, 0.4–64.1%], surimi products [100.0%]). A deep microbiome profiling was performed in 8 correctly-labeled conventional sushi and 2 tilapia sashimi mislabeled as snapper, with sequencing depths greater than 100,000 reads for every sample. The relative abundance of Pseudomonas genus is significantly higher in tilapia sashimi than in conventional sushi (P = 0.044). In conclusion, the gross seafood mislabel rate in Taiwan is 18.9% (12.5–26.8%). Snapper, cod and surimi products are particularly vulnerable to fraudulent substitutions. The high abundance of Pseudomonas in tilapia sashimi mislabeled as snapper unveils a potential health issue pertaining to the consumption of raw mislabeled seafood.

Abstract

Abstract Background Inadequate hospital cleaning may contribute to cross-transmission of pathogens. It is important to implement effective cleaning for the safe hospital environment. We conducted a three-phase study using human factors engineering (HFE) approach to enhance environmental cleanliness. Methods This study was conducted using a prospective interventional trial, and 28 (33.3%) of 84 wards in a medical center were sampled. The three-phases included pre-intervention analysis (Phase 1), implementing interventions by HFE principles (Phase 2), and programmatic analysis (Phase 3). The evaluations of terminal cleaning and disinfection were performed using the fluorescent marker, the adenosine triphosphate bioluminescence assay, and the aerobic colony count method simultaneously in all phases. Effective terminal cleaning and disinfection was qualified with the aggregate outcome of the same 10 high-touch surfaces per room. A score for each high-touch surface was recorded, with 0 denoting a fail and 10 denoting a pass by the benchmark of the evaluation method, and the total terminal cleaning and disinfection score (TCD score) was a score out of 100. Results In each phase, 840 high-touch surfaces were collected from 84 rooms after terminal cleaning and disinfection. After the interventions, the TCD score by the three evaluation methods all showed significant improved. The carriage incidence of multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) decreased significantly from 4.1 per 1000 patient-days to 3.6 per 1000 patient-days (P = .03). Conclusion The HFE approach can improve the thoroughness and the effectiveness of terminal cleaning and disinfection, and resulted in a reduction of patient carriage of MDRO at hospitals. Larger studies are necessary to establish whether such efforts of cleanliness can reduce the incidence of healthcare-associated infection.

6. Stakeholder Perspectives of Experiential Education in Tertiary Institutions and Learning from COVID-19

Abstract

Background: Many universities in Canada offer experiential education (EE) opportunities for students that are both field-based and on-campus. Despite a commitment to EE, there is a paucity of information about various stakeholder perspectives of EE and the equity implications of the different approaches to EE. Furthermore, it is unclear how EE programs at universities changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. Purpose: This study aims to explore stakeholder perspectives of EE experiences and understand the shifts to EE, perhaps towards more equitable and accessible EE opportunities, prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology/Approach: We used an exploratory case study approach involving a survey with university students, interviews with university instructors and community organizations, and a document review, to understand stakeholder perspectives and shifts to EE due to COVID-19. Findings/Conclusions: Findings suggest that there are consistent benefits of EE, and barriers to EE, across student, instructor, and organization perspectives, where learning from changes prompted by the pandemic could be beneficial to increase equity in EE. Implications: We recommend that instructors and institutions continue to work in partnership with students and community organizations to build virtual, on-campus, and local field-based EE (FBEE) opportunities that aim to increase equitable access and impact.

Abstract

The purpose of civic education is to prepare students to become 'good citizens' aligned with the policies and political purposes of the regime to which they belong. This exploratory study employed a mixed methods design to construct a typology of 'good citizens' to understand university students' perceptions of citizenship in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China. It found that the university students' perceptions of 'good citizens' is constructed from two components: internal political efficacy and the connection between 'good citizens' and the regime. Students in these societies share a similar understanding of the first component but have significant divergences in the second component. These findings demonstrate a correlation between regime type and the perceptions of 'good citizens' and our typology could provide a conceptual framework to guide researchers in organising and conducting further comparative studies.

21. Understanding Partnerships in Teacher and Student Feedback Literacy: Shared Responsibility

Abstract

Feedback literacy has been phenomenally studied across research and practices in the past decade. However, the partnership in teacher and student feedback literacy (TFL and SFL) has been scarcely studied. As a response, this study explored the statistical relationship between TFL and SFL and the perceptions of feedback-literate students and teachers, using two parallel questionnaires' data from 200 students and 20 teachers at a southwestern Chinese university. Analyses revealed mismatched understandings of the TFL and SFL (at micro and macro level) and a medium positive correlation between TFL and SFL (at meso and macro level). Such empirical evidence validates that student-teacher partnerships should be well foregrounded to improve their feedback literacy. Meanwhile, new empirical insights -- 'awareness of the student-teacher partnership' and 'perception of the relationship between feedback and learning effects' -- should be added to existing SFL frameworks.

22. Influences of Internet Access on Civic Knowledge Measurement in Taiwan

Abstract

Internet-related issues have influenced how civic knowledge is educated and measured. The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is a well-known large-scale assessment concerning how civic knowledge is educated and measured globally. Regardless of the emerging roles of internet access and usage, the influences of internet access on civic knowledge have yet to be investigated in ICCS research. Hence, this study aims to study whether the multiple-choice items in the civic knowledge test of ICCS 2016 are affected by internet access, what causes the effect, and to what degree Internet access influences the measurement. Results indicated that the ICCS civic knowledge test included six differential item functioning (DIF) items on internet access, of which five favored families with internet access, and one favored families without internet access. In addition, the primary source of DIF items was highly related to socioeconomic status. Overall, the students in families where the internet was available possessed higher civic knowledge than the students who were not. In conclusion, this study provides evidence of item inequivalence and identifies suspicious sources. These results can be used as a basis to investigate related research on digital learning, online teaching, and social media engagement in civic literacy.

31. Efficacy of Different Presentation Modes for L2 Video Comprehension: Full versus Partial Display of Verbal and Nonverbal Input

Abstract

Video materials require learners to manage concurrent verbal and pictorial processing. To facilitate second language (L2) learners' video comprehension, the amount of presented information should thus be compatible with human beings' finite cognitive capacity. In light of this, the current study explored whether a reduction in multimodal comprehension scaffolding would lead to better L2 comprehension gain when viewing captioned videos and, if so, which type of reduction (verbal vs. nonverbal) is more beneficial. A total of 62 L2 learners of English were randomly assigned to one of the following viewing conditions: (1) full captions + animation, (2) full captions + static key frames, (3) partial captions + animation, and (4) partial captions + static key frames. They then completed a comprehension test and cognitive load questionnaire. The results showed that while viewing the video with reduced nonverbal visual information (static key frames), the participants had well-rounded performance in all aspects of comprehension. However, their local comprehension (extraction of details) was particularly enhanced after viewing a key-framed video with full captions. Notably, this gain in local comprehension was not as manifest after viewing animated video content with full captions. The qualitative data also revealed that although animation may provide a perceptually stimulating viewing experience, its transient feature most likely taxed the participants' attention, thus impacting their comprehension outcomes. These findings underscore the benefit of a reduction in nonverbal input and the interplay between verbal and nonverbal input. The findings are discussed in relation to the use of verbal and nonverbal input for different pedagogical purposes.

32. Helping Low-Achieving Students to Comprehend the Area of Basic Geometric Shapes Using an Enclosing-Rectangle Scaffold via Computer-Assisted Instruction

Abstract

This study combined the principles of multimedia message design with an enclosing-rectangle scaffold to facilitate instruction on deriving the area of basic geometric shapes. A pretest/posttest/delayed-posttest design was used to compare the effectiveness of the enclosing-rectangle scaffold with that of conventional dissection/rearrangement methods among low-achieving seventh-grade students. These fifty-six low-achieving students were averagely assigned to one of two teaching methods. In immediate and delayed testing, an enclosing-rectangle scaffold proved significantly more effective than the conventional approach (posttest: F (1,53) = 16.148, p = <0.001, [eta][superscript 2] = 0.234; delayed posttest: F (1,53) = 13.502, p = <0.001, [eta] [superscript 2] = 0.203). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of stepwise visualisation within a coherent context in facilitating the selection, organisation, and integration of mathematical concepts. Given the ongoing challenges that students face in comprehending the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid, there is a need for further research in this area to identify effective instructional approaches and strategies.
