Abstract

International audience; Researchers have considered individual and organizational factors of ethical decision making. However, they have little interest in situational factors (McClaren, Journal of Business Ethics 112(1):101–125, 2013) which is surprising given the many situations sales persons face. We address this issue using two pilot qualitative studies successively and a 2 by 2 within-subject experiment with sales scenarios. Qualitative and quantitative data are obtained from front-line employees of the main French retail banks that serve low-income customers. We show that the recognition of an ethical issue differs depending on the role behavior salespersons are engaged in and the nature of the conflict of interest they face. Moreover, the combined effect of these two situational characteristics is mediated by moral intensity. This study not only adds evidence on situational factors affecting ethical decision but also extends empirical research on sales ethics by revealing sales situations that are not considered in the empirical literature. The research implications of the findings are discussed along with the study’s limitations and suggestions for future research.

Abstract

International audience; This article illustrates the use of researcher introspection prior to undertaking a sensitive research project. We first describe the research design. The contributions of introspection in relation to the concept of ethnicity are then clarified: (1) the feeling of belonging to an ethnic group (or ethnicity) is experienced only through social interaction; and (2) ethnicity is an ongoing process that is organized around self-protection tactics. Ethnicity emerges as an individual and syncretic process. The identity positions outlined in the various acculturation or post-assimilation models do not take this personal dimension into account, and limit individuals to cultural categories defined in relation to the majority culture. Accordingly we study ethnicity through practices and places of consumption characteristic of minority culture in order to understand consumers' inner dialogue and the interactions experienced and to take into account the reciprocity of cultural exchange.

Abstract

International audience; In France, Fair Trade arrived on the scene in the late twentieth century, and since then has passed through several experimental phases before becoming an enduring ''realistic'' economic alternative. To understand the transformation, this article defines Fair Trade as a social construct issues and tensions of which change depending on the point of entry. By conducting a secondary analysis of several data sets from varied sources, including documentary material, interviews, and observations , the authors trace the history of Fair Trade in France, define its introduction as a system, describe its institutionalization, and contribute to a greater understanding of how its ideals have changed and become more professional over time. The analyses reveal that the term ''Fair Trade'' has become ambiguous, spanning divergent and conflicting ideas and projects, including opening and closing conventional market systems and alter-globalization and anti-globalization.
