Early childhood is characterized by robust developmental changes in cognitive control. However, our understanding of intra-individual change in neural indices of cognitive control during this period remains limited. Here, we examined developmental changes in event-related potential (ERP) indices of cognitive control from preschool through first grade, in a large and diverse sample of children (N = 257). We recorded ERPs during a visual Go/No-Go task. N2 and P3b mean amplitudes were extracted from the observed waveforms (Go and No-Go) and the difference wave (No-Go minus Go, or ∆). Latent growth curve modeling revealed that while N2 Go and No-Go amplitudes showed no linear change, P3b Go and No-Go amplitudes displayed linear decreases in magnitude (became less positive) over time. ∆N2 amplitude demonstrated a linear increase in magnitude (became more negative) over time whereas ∆P3b amplitude was more positive in kindergarten compared to preschool. Younger age in preschool predicted greater rates of change in ∆N2 amplitude, and higher maternal education predicted larger initial P3b Go and No-Go amplitudes in preschool. Our findings suggest that observed waveforms and difference waves are not interchangeable for indexing neurodevelopment, and the developmental trajectories of different ERP indices of cognitive control are component-specific in early childhood.

The classic V (violet, purple) gene of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) functions in a complex genetic network that controls seed coat and flower color and flavonoid content. V was cloned to understand its role in the network and the evolution of its orthologs in the Viridiplantae. V mapped genetically to a narrow interval on chromosome Pv06. A candidate gene was selected based on flavonoid analysis and confirmed by recombinational mapping. Protein and domain modeling determined V encodes flavonoid 3′5′ hydroxylase (F3′5′H), a P450 enzyme required for the expression of dihydromyricetin-derived flavonoids in the flavonoid pathway. Eight recessive haplotypes, defined by mutations of key functional domains required for P450 activities, evolved independently in the two bean gene pools from a common ancestral gene. V homologs were identified in Viridiplantae orders by functional domain searches. A phylogenetic analysis determined F3′5′H first appeared in the Streptophyta and is present in only 41% of Angiosperm reference genomes. The evolutionarily related flavonoid pathway gene flavonoid 3′ hydroxylase (F3′H) is found nearly universally in all Angiosperms. F3′H may be conserved because of its role in abiotic stress, while F3′5′H evolved as a major target gene for the evolution of flower and seed coat color in plants.

Background: Journey mapping is a relatively new, promising method for use in the evaluation sector. In this method, individuals who have gone through a program or system provide feedback on the process in a chronological way, highlighting successes and challenges they have encountered through the process. This article provides an overview of the method and three case studies describing how journey mapping has been used to evaluate youth programs and social service systems. Purpose: To aid evaluators in understanding journey mapping and the ways in which it can be applied to various evaluation projects with the intention to help them determine whether or not the method is appropriate in their practice. Setting: Journey mapping can be applied in evaluations examining how individuals and groups interact with programs, organizations, and systems. Data collection and analysis: The journey mapping method, including data collection through focus groups and interviews and thematic analysis of notes and transcripts. Findings: Journey mapping is a method that can illuminate successes and challenges individuals and families face when interacting with a program, organization, or system. Specific recommendations for study design, data collection, analysis, and reporting are offered for evaluators’ consideration.

Abstract Introduction Increased availability of Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarker tests provides older adults with opportunities to seek out and learn results. We evaluated the feasibility of virtually returning AD biomarker results. Methods Trained study clinicians disclosed amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) results and provided dementia risk‐reduction counseling via televideo to cognitively unimpaired participants already enrolled in AD research (n = 99; mean age ± SD: 72.0 ± 4.8; 67% women; 95% White; 28% amyloid elevated). Results Our study demonstrated acceptable levels of retention (93%), compliance (98%), adherence (98%), clinician competence (97%), education comprehension (quiz scores 14/15), and virtual visit functionality (rating 9.4/10). Depression, anxiety, and suicidality remained low and did not differ by amyloid result. Discussion Virtual return of amyloid PET results to cognitively unimpaired research participants is feasible and does not result in increased psychological symptoms. Technological barriers for some participants highlight the need for flexibility. These findings support the use of televideo in AD biomarker disclosure, although our study sample and design have important limitations for generalizability.
