As climate change intensifies, heat stress mitigation for pigs becomes more important. Trials involving induced heat waves are useful to test several measures (e.g. reduced stocking density) at a faster rate, but only when accurately evaluated and validated. In the present study, we investigated the suitability of an artificial heating protocol at different pig weights (experiment 1). The impact of different stocking densities on fattening pigs during an artificial heat wave (experiment 2) was also investigated. Experiment 1: Forty 20-week-old pigs weighing 96.5 ± 7.3 kg (W 100) and forty 17-week-old pigs weighing 72.7 ± 9.9 kg (W 70) were housed in two compartments. An artificial heat wave (heat load) was induced for 3 days. During 3-day periods before, during and after the heat load, physiological parameters (respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (T rectal), skin temperature (T skin) and behavior) were measured and average daily feed intake was observed. Ambient temperature, relative humidity and temperature-humidity index (THI) were monitored. Experiment 2: A total of 150 fattening pigs were randomly divided into three treatment groups: SD 1.3 (1.3 m2/pig), SD 1.0 (1.0 m2/pig) and SD 0.8 (0.8 m2/pig). All pens had a total pen surface of 4.88 m2, corresponding with 4, 5 and 6 fattening pigs in the SD 1.3 , SD 1.0 and SD 0.8 groups, respectively. The heat load was induced for 7 days on week 21. Respiration rate and T rectal were observed as in experiment 1. Average daily gain and average daily feed intake were also noted. During the heat load, THI reached ≥ 75 (78.4 (experiment 1) and 78.6 (experiment 2)), even when relative humidity decreased to ± 45%. Every physiological parameter showed significant increases during the heat load. The prolonged heating protocol in experiment 2 also provoked significant decreases in average daily feed intake (15%) and average daily gain (19%) for all groups. Weight within the studied range of 70–100 kg did not have a significant impact on any of the parameters. However, T skin was affected by both weight and heat load (P < 0.05), where T skin from W 100 was always lower in comparison to W 70. In addition, we found that 0.8 m2/pig doubled the increase of T rectal during the heat load, namely SD 0.8 (0.22 °C) compared to SD 1.0 (0.12 °C) (P = 0.033) and SD 1.3 (0.13 °C) (P = 0.053). This suggests that pigs housed at higher densities are less able to regulate their internal heat production. However, RR and performances were not significantly affected by heat load in this experimental set-up. The impact of pork production on global livestock's greenhouse gas emissions is substantial. Understanding the factors influencing these emissions is crucial in achieving a more sustainable pig husbandry. In two independent experiments, the impact of slaughter weight on the carbon footprint (CFP) of pig feed intake (CFP FI) was evaluated for growing-finishing pigs of different sexes (entire males (EM), barrows (BA), immunocastrates (IC) and gilts (GI)). In experiment 1 118 animals were raised individually in experimental conditions. In experiment 2 384 animals were housed in group (four pigs per pen), in controlled commercial farm circumstances. All animals were fed ad libitum in a three-phase feeding regime and slaughtered at different BW, ranging from 110 to 148 kg (experiment 1) and from 99 to 138 kg (experiment 2). When only the fattening period was considered, the CFP FI was expressed per kg carcass growth. When the production of piglets was also taken into account, the CFP FI was calculated per kg carcass weight. For all sexes, the heavier the pig, the higher the CFP FI per kg carcass growth (P < 0.05, experiment 1; P < 0.001, experiment 2) and per kg carcass weight (P < 0.05, experiment 1; P < 0.01, experiment 2). In addition, BA had a significantly higher CFP FI per kg carcass growth and per kg carcass weight compared to EM and IC and to EM, IC and GI in respectively experiments 1 and 2 (P < 0.001). When performing a desk study with a soy-free (i.e. reduced CFP) feed in the third phase of experiment 2, slaughter weight no longer affected the CFP FI per kg carcass growth (P = 0.133) and per kg carcass weight (P = 0.856). For many years, pig production has focused on maximizing performance by selecting for maximal muscle growth and feeding diets that allow the animals to express their genetic potential. However, it is unclear whether this selection for muscle deposition has affected the capacity of pigs to cope with by-product-based diets, which rely on fat as the primary energy source instead of starches and sugars. Therefore, an experiment was set up to investigate if different types of boars affect how their progeny cope with alternative ingredients in the diet, with a possible need for adapted breeding schemes. Two types of boars within the Piétrain sire line were used based on either a high or low estimated breeding value for daily feed intake (HFI : high feed intake, low feed intake). When their progeny reached 14 weeks of age, two dietary strategies were compared: a control (CON) vs a by-product-based diet high in fat and fiber (HFF). The CON diet was mainly based on cereals (corn, wheat, barley) and soybean meal. The HFF diet was formulated to contain the same net energy, CP and digestible amino acid levels without any cereals or soybean meal. In total 192 animals were included in the experiment (48 animals/type of boar/diet) and performance, digestibility, carcass and meat quality were compared. None of the parameters showed a significant interaction (P < 0.05) between the type of boar and diet, suggesting that shifting to diets that are less prone to feed-food competition is equally feasible in different types of pigs. Type of boar did affect performance, carcass quality and intramuscular fat content. HFI pigs showed higher daily feed intake (DFI) and daily gain (P < 0.001), with no significant difference in feed conversion ratio (P = 0.205), lower carcass quality (P < 0.001) and higher intramuscular fat content (P = 0.030). For both boar types, pigs fed the CON diet performed better, with a higher daily gain (P = 0.028), DFI (P = 0.011) and dressing yield (P = 0.009) and better digestibility (P < 0.001), but without differences in feed conversion ratio or meat quality. In conclusion, there was no indication that pigs differing in feed intake capacity cope differently with a high-fat, high-fiber diet based on by-products. The seemingly straightforward question of optimal pig delivery weight is more complex than meets the eye. Despite abundant research insights, the industry continues to request additional applied scientific decision support on the delivery weight problem. The current objective is to investigate whether and how the complex decision of delivery weight can be reshaped (reframed) into a more tangible and comprehensible system of factors that matter for making the right decision. We used a participatory decision problem analysis, which resulted in modelling blueprints that incorporate factors prioritised by stakeholders for determining optimal delivery weights. How to efficiently organise such a 'problem reframing process' is case-specific: it depends on the objective, the initial problem understanding by the stakeholders, and their learning potential. Efficient co-learning is a prerequisite for successful participatory problem analysis. Our study reveals that the first step in such a process of 'problem reframing' should therefore be to answer the question of how to effectively organise co-learning among stakeholders and researchers, instead of starting with a correct and detailed representation of the problem. Useful guidelines for participatory problem reframing processes are (1) providing sufficient participatory learning steps, (2) having few and clearly defined objectives per learning step, (3) providing adapted learning tools per step, (4) establishing a common language and (5) deliberately choosing stakeholders based on prior knowledge of the problem or its context, potential motivation or incentives to be part of the participatory process step and potential role in up-scaling the co-learning process to a larger group of beneficiaries. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of GnRH vaccination in boars (BO), barrows (BA), and gilts (GI) slaughtered at an average BW of 133 kg. Forty BO, 40 BA, and 40 GI were housed individually, fed ad libitum, and divided into 2 groups of 20 pigs per sex, a control group (CON) and a GnRH vaccinated group (IC). The IC group received 2 injections of GnRH vaccine (Improvac) at 70 and 105 kg. In BA, GnRH vaccination had minor effects on performance. Observed effects in BO and GI are therefore probably not caused by the GnRH vaccination itself but by the subsequent withdrawal of gonadal hormones. In BO, the increased feed intake after GnRH vaccination (P < 0.001), accompanied by a fall in estradiol and testosterone levels, led to faster growth (P = 0.014), increased back fat thickness (P = 0.021), and a tendency for a decreased meat percentage (P = 0.052). GnRH vaccination of BO decreased the boar taint-related sensory attribute scores similar to the levels of BA and GI (P < 0.001). In GI, the increased feed intake after GnRH vaccination (P < 0.001), accompanied by low progesterone levels, led to faster growth (P < 0.001), increased back fat thickness (P = 0.018), decreased meat percentage (P = 0.032), and a decreased shear force (P = 0.002) without significant differences in the sensory profile. The Asp298Asn polymorphism of the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) in pigs is known to affect economically important traits such as growth rate and backfat thickness. We have assessed the possible use of this polymorphism as a molecular marker to perform genetic selection toward lower boar taint levels without compromising growth performance and carcass and meat quality in commercial boars and gilts. Homozygous boars and gilts of the AA genotype and GG genotype were compared in an intervention study with a 2 × 2 design to assess main effects and possible interactions between sex and MC4R genotype. The concentrations of the 3 boar taint compounds androstenone (P = 0.044), skatole (P = 0.049), and indole (P = 0.006) were significantly higher in fat of AA boars compared to GG boars. However, no effect on the sensory analysis of the fat samples could be observed. Between 20 and 115 kg BW, AA pigs showed higher ADFI than GG pigs (P < 0.001). An interaction between genotype and sex was observed for ADG (P = 0.044): AA boars had a significantly higher ADG than GG boars but there was no significant difference between the gilts. Daily lean meat gain tended to be higher in boars compared to gilts (P = 0.051), independent of genotype. Similarly, boars showed higher G:F compared to gilts (P < 0.001), without effect of genotype. Genotype and sex affected several carcass quality parameters but there was no interaction. Pigs of the AA genotype displayed a lower dressing percentage (P = 0.005), lower ham width (P = 0.024), lower muscle thickness (P = 0.011), and higher fat thickness (P < 0.001), resulting in a lower lean meat percentage (P < 0.001) in comparison with GG pigs. Gilts had a significantly higher dressing percentage (P < 0.001), higher muscle thickness (P < 0.001), higher ham width (P < 0.001), and lower ham angle (P < 0.001) compared to boars. Other than the boar taint compounds, meat quality was not affected by genotype. Pork of gilts was darker (P = 0.014) and less exudative during cooking (P < 0.001) and contained more intramuscular fat (P = 0.013). These results indicate that genetic selection against boar taint is possible using this marker. This will also result in lower feed intake and ADG and, consequently, better carcass quality. Abstract: This study evaluates 1) carcass quality, meat quality and palatability for barrows, immunocastrates and boars and 2) the effect of chicory supplemented feed during 10days before slaughter on boar meat quality. At comparable carcass weights, estimated carcass lean meat percentage was higher in immunocastrates and boars than in barrows. Muscle thickness was higher for immunocastrates and barrows compared to boars, while fat thickness was lowest for immunocastrates and boars. Barrows, immunocastrates and boars differed in water holding capacity and boar taint. Home consumer panels were conducted to evaluate palatability. The consumers did detect differences in tenderness and juiciness, but not for boar taint. The chicory feed supplemented in boar feed decreased skatole concentration in backfat, without largely influencing meat quality or palatability. Abstract: No automated detection system for boar taint detection is currently available, thus boar taint at the slaughterline can currently only be assessed using the singeing method (olfactory scoring). This study compares several heating methods (microwave, soldering iron and pyropen) and evaluates the effect of habituation, cleaning the soldering iron, singeing the fat twice in the same place, and variations in the technical procedures. All methods seem to be suitable for detecting boar taint but the choice of heating method for sensory scoring of boar taint depends on habituation of the trained assessor and specific conditions applied. The pyropen seems to be most suitable because it does not contact the fat and is easy to handle (wireless). Finally, the intensity score may also be influenced by: contamination from not cleaning the soldering iron, singeing the fat twice in the same place, and the effect of habituation. Abstract: Three potential early-age predictors of which boars are likely to develop boar taint (testes volume, skin lesions and dirtiness) were measured on 102 boars every fortnight from 10weeks of age until slaughter. These predictors were correlated with the level of boar taint according to the hot iron method and the concentrations of skatole and androstenone as determined by chemical analysis. The chance of no/low boar taint according to the hot iron method decreased with higher testes volume (weeks 22 and 24) and increased with skin lesion score (weeks 12, 16 and 18). For the concentrations of androstenone and skatole, the strongest correlation was found with testes volume in week 12. Skin lesions in week 16 were negatively correlated with skatole levels. Dirtiness was negatively correlated with skatole concentrations (week 18) but positively correlated with androstenone concentrations (weeks 20 and 22). Abstract: It has been suggested that skatole, one of the main compounds responsible for boar taint, can be lowered by keeping pigs clean, as skatole can be absorbed through skin and/or lungs (). With this experiment, we further investigated this hypothesis by comparing extremely clean with extremely dirty animals with regard to the occurrence of boar taint. One group of boars was washed daily and pens were mucked on and littered down daily (CLEAN), a second group of boars was rubbed with faeces daily (DIRTY) and a third group of boars was kept in control conditions (CONTROL). The treatment was performed during the last four weeks before slaughter. According to the standardised consumer panel evaluations, boars subjected to extra soiling had a higher concentration of boar taint than boars that were kept extra clean. In contrast, expert panels judged general meat flavour to be inferior in CLEAN than CONTROL pigs. The home consumer panel, the hot iron method, and laboratory analyses, i.e., the presence of indole, skatole and androstenone in fat and serum, all showed no significant differences. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) are considered to have important physiological functions. However, to prove this, SCFA must be determined, which is rather difficult as a lot of factors interfere with their production. This review focuses on the factors that influence the prediction of short-chain fatty acid formation in the large intestine of monogastric mammals. To mimic the in vivo situation, when predicting the amount of short-chain fatty acids produced from a certain substrate based on in vitro models, one has to estimate the amount of this substrate entering the large intestine, the retention time in the different parts of the large intestine, and the substrate fermentability. Instead of in vitro models, direct and indirect techniques may be used to measure short-chain fatty acid production in vivo. Direct techniques include the measurement of input and output or measuring differences in SCFA between portal and venous blood whereas indirect techniques measure the end products of fermentation. In this case, other factors have to be taken into account, including technical limitations and ethical considerations. Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the possibility of reducing boar taint in boars (Piétrain×Hybrid) by addition of different feed ingredients (raw potato starch (RPS) 10%, raw potato starch 10%+wheat bran 5% (RPS+WB), lupins 10%, inulin 5%, clinoptilolite 1%) to a standard diet over a period of 4–6 weeks before slaughter. Control boars (CBOAR) as well as barrows were fed the standard diet. Efficacy of the different feed ingredients was evaluated by different boar taint detection methods: hot iron method, consumer panel, expert panel and laboratory analysis. According to all detection methods, clear differences were noticeable between boars and barrows. No differences in boar taint incidence were found between the boars on the different dietary treatments as assessed by consumers, experts, hot iron method or the concentration of skatole in fat. A significant effect on indole level was found, but no further differentiation could be made. The concentration of backfat androstenone was significantly higher for the inulin and control boar group compared to the lupin group. In conclusion, none of the feeding strategies tested in this study reduced boar taint in boars at the given percentages. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study was performed to investigate meat quality traits of loin and ham of commercial pigs as affected by genetic differences in carcass and growth traits of the parent lines. Three hybrid sow lines were crossbred with two types of Belgian Piétrain with different breeding goals (BP growth and BP carcass emphasizing daily growth and carcass conformation, respectively). Pig live performance and carcass quality of 270 offspring were measured, and meat quality of the loin and (cooked) ham was evaluated on 216 animals. Despite the differences in pig live performance and carcass quality for sow line, little effect on meat quality was observed. Only a lower (p < 0.05) intramuscular fat content of ham and a tendency (p < 0.1) toward lower cooking yield was observed in offspring of the sow line with the highest versus the lowest carcass lean content. Loin traits were only weakly associated with fresh and cooked ham quality traits. • The effect of growth and carcass traits in crossbred pigs on ham and loin quality was studied. • Differences in pig live performance according to sire type or sow line were of economic importance. • Meat quality did not differ between sire type or sow line. • Loin quality was only weakly associated with cooked ham meat quality. Boar taint is an off-odour occurring while heating meat or fat from boars. A method detecting the three compounds (androstenone, skatole and indole) simultaneously in blood would offer substantial advantages since it would allow monitoring the impact of rearing strategies. Therefore, a UHPLC-HR-Orbitrap-MS analysis method is optimized and validated for the quantification of these compounds in plasma or serum. Sample pre-treatment involved an extraction with diethylether followed by a centrifugal filtration (30 kDa). Limits of detection and quantification varied between 0.5 and 1 μg L −1 and 2 and 3 μg L −1 for the three compounds, respectively. Besides, an excellent repeatability (RSD < 7.6%), within-laboratory reproducibility (RSD < 10.5%), recovery (87–97%) and linearity ( R 2 > 0.99) were recorded. Correlations between serum/plasma and fat levels of the boar taint compounds were positive for skatole ( r serum = 0.39 and r plasma = 0.84) and androstenone ( r serum = 0.73–0.78 and r plasma = 0.32–0.80). Since surgical castration of male piglets without anaesthesia is under heavy societal pressure, finding a sustainable solution to reduce boar taint has become urgent. One way to circumvent this animal welfare violation is raising entire male pigs whilst selecting against the tainted phenotype through marker-assisted selection. Since slaughtering at a lower weight is often suggested to reduce boar taint, selection using a marker for that trait could be a promising strategy. Therefore, in this study a melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) mutation, frequently described in different pig breeds as marker for fat content, weight gain and feed intake, was examined in relation to boar taint in pig breeds used in Belgian pig farms. Although results suggest an association between this mutation and a boar taint odour score assigned by experts, no association was found between the mutation and the concentration of the individual chemical boar taint components androstenone, skatole and indole. Abstract: Skatole and androstenone are the main boar taint compounds. Whereas nearly everybody is sensitive to skatole, the sensitivity to androstenone is genetically determined and differs between countries. In this study the methodology for testing androstenone sensitivity was refined and applied to 1569 consumers that were approached at six shopping malls in Flanders. Participants were asked to smell the contents of four bottles (three were filled with water and one with androstenone solved in water) and to identify and describe the odour of the strongest smelling bottle. This test was performed twice. 45.3% of the respondents were classified as sensitive to androstenone (i.e. the percentage of participants that identified the correct bottle in both tests minus a guess correction). Sensitivity differed between sexes (men: 38.3%–women: 51.1%, P<0.001), according to age (older people were less sensitive, P<0.001), and between the test locations (P<0.001), but not between smokers versus non-smokers. Performance (from 10 weeks until slaughter), carcass and meat quality, and effectiveness of immunocastration was compared in crossbred offspring of stress positive (BP+) and negative (BP-) Belgian Piétrain and Canadian Duroc (CD) given the second vaccination of Improvac® at different times (4, 6, 8 weeks before slaughter). CD offspring had a significantly higher daily gain (DG) and feed intake (DFI), and lower predicted lean meat percentage (LMP) and dressing yield compared to BP+ and BP-, while feed conversion ratio (FCR) did not differ. CD offspring had significantly lower drip loss and higher pH i, intramuscular fat content than BP+ and BP- (except for pH i). No significant effect of vaccination time on DG nor FCR was observed. Predicted LMP tended to increase as time-post injection decreased, while meat quality was minor affected. This study was designed to compare performance, carcass and meat quality of crossbred of a hybrid sow x three sire lines, i.e. stress positive Belgian Piétrain (BP), stress negative French Piétrain (FP) and Canadian Duroc (CD). BP offspring had a significantly higher carcass yield (p <.001) and lean meat content (p <.001) in comparison with FP, which was higher than CD. BP offspring had significantly lower pH (p <.05), water-holding capacity (WHC) (p <.001) and intramuscular fat (IMF) (p <.001) content in the loin compared to FP and CD, but these meat quality parameters, with the exception of pH, were superior for CD as compared to FP. In accordance with loin quality, pH i , pH u , WHC and IMF of BP were significantly lower (p <.05) compared to CD in the fresh and cooked ham. Most often, FP offspring could not be differentiated from the other offspring, with the exception of cooking loss of the cooked ham. Background: The administration of a gonadotropin releasing factor (GnRF) analog to pigs has proven to induce antibodies against endogenous GnRF. In gilts (young female pigs), the subsequent blocking of GnRF activity by specific antibodies results in a temporary suppression of ovarian activity and sexual maturation. One pre-clinical and two clinical studies were conducted to assess the ability of the GnRF analog to produce immunologically suppression of the ovarian function, preventing gilts from reaching puberty before harvest, at 27 weeks of age., Results: In the three studies, a significant reduction of size and weight of reproductive organs and gilts in oestrus was demonstrated in vaccinated gilts compared with intact gilts. A significant increase in anti-GnRF antibody levels in sera was observed after the 2nd dose, which lasted until the end of the study in each of the protocols used. Progesterone levels were significantly reduced from 6 to 8 weeks after 2nd vaccination in clinical studies 2 and 1 respectively, and from 6 weeks after 2nd vaccination in the pre-clinical study. Estradiol levels were below the limit of detection for clinical study 2 and significantly reduced in vaccinated gilts at the end of the pre-clinical study and the clinical study 1., Conclusions: Vaccination of gilts with a GnRF analog with two different protocols (1st dose from 10 to 14 weeks of age, and a 2nd dose 8 or 4 weeks later) was effective in reducing the development of puberty for at least 9 weeks post 2nd dose. Heat stress in pigs negatively affects welfare, health, and performance. Osmoprotectants and antioxidants may alleviate oxidative damage during hot periods. We investigated whether an additive-enriched feed can reduce negative effects in pigs during summer conditions. Sixty growing-finishing pigs were allocated into two groups: the control (CF) and summer feed (SF) group. The CF group contained 0.4 mg/kg inorganic selenium and 100 ppm vitamin E, while the SF group contained 0.3 mg/kg inorganic selenium, 0.1 mg/kg selenomethionine, 200 ppm vitamins E and C, and 0.2% betaine. Feed was offered ad libitum. Respiration rate, rectal and skin temperature, behaviour, and weight gain were assessed weekly. Daily measurements of these parameters were performed during a 3-day heat wave (temperature humidity index (THI) ≥ 75) and during an artificial heating period. Individual average daily water intake (ADWI) and feed intake were measured using RFID systems. The ADWI of the SF group did not change during heat load while it increased for the CF group. Independent of dietary treatment, increases in ∆THI or the THI were accompanied by significant increases in both respiration rate and skin temperature. In conclusion, the SF may induce a reduced need to increase ADWI during hot periods. In addition, mainly skin temperatures and especially respiration rates revealed the sensitivity of pigs to heat stress.

Introduction: The effect of dietary fiber on pig production has been extensively evaluated. Inspired by observations of the diet of wild, young piglets, this study aimed to examine the possibility of feeding grass hay to suckling piglets besides concentrated creep feed., Methods: The sow-nursed piglets in this study were divided into two groups based on balanced sow parities. The control group (CON, n = 7 sows) only received a regular, concentrated creep feed, while the treatment piglets (GH, n = 8 sows) were also provided with chopped grass hay from 2 days of age until weaning (28 days). At weaning, one piglet with a median weight was selected from each litter for post-mortem evaluation. Subsequently, six pigs around median weight per sow were grouped into nursery pens and monitored for their feed intake and body weight gain until 9 weeks of age., Results and Discussion: Piglets in GH consumed, on average, 57 g of grass hay per piglet during the entire lactation period. The emptied weight of the small and large intestine was significantly greater in GH (280 vs. 228 g, 88.8 vs. 79.3 g, respectively, p < 0.05), and the length of the large intestine was stimulated by the grass hay (164 vs. 150 cm, p < 0.05). Morphologically, the villus height in the jejunum was higher in GH ( p < 0.05). In the large intestine, the crypt depth of the mid-colon was lower in GH. Moreover, the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations in the cecum were increased in GH compared to CON (1,179 vs. 948 µmol/g dry matter, p < 0.05), whereas in the colon, SCFA concentrations were lower in CON (341 vs. 278 µmol/g dry matter, p < 0.05). There was no major impact of grass hay inclusion on the colonic microbiota composition. Only a trend was observed for a lower inverse of the classical Simpson (InvSimpon) index and a higher abundance of Lactobacillus genera in GH. After weaning, no significant differences in feed intake and body weight gain were observed. Lighting influences the circadian rhythm and physiology of animals. Yet, the influence of light on nursery pigs is not fully understood and results remain controversial. The present study investigated the effects of a prolonged photoperiod on the performance, health, and behaviour of nursery pigs. This study was conducted in one farm and included 288 hybrid nursery pigs. Long (LONG) and short (SHORT) photoperiod animals were exposed to either 16 or 8 h of light per day, respectively. Performance, health, welfare, and behavioural parameters were monitored during a nursery period of five weeks. Short photoperiod piglets tended to have higher weights at the end of the nursery (LONG: 21.59 vs. SHORT: 22.19 kg; p = 0.064) and higher average daily gain (LONG: 385 vs. SHORT: 403 g/day; p = 0.063) compared to the long photoperiod piglets. The LONG piglets had significantly higher fecal consistency scores (0-100) than the SHORT piglets on days 7 (LONG: 21 vs. SHORT: 10; p = 0.039), 11 (LONG: 40 vs. SHORT: 14; p = 0.002), 21 (LONG: 21 vs. SHORT: 8; p = 0.008), and 25 (LONG: 26 vs. SHORT: 11; p = 0.015). The LONG piglets tended to have a slightly higher incidence of aggressive behaviour (LONG: 2.49% vs. SHORT: 2.36%; p = 0.071). No significant differences were found for the remaining parameters ( p > 0.1). Under the present conditions, lengthening the photoperiod during the nursery period did not significantly improve the performance, health, and welfare of the pigs.

Consumer studies on acceptability of pork from immunocastrates (IC) and entire males (EM) are of primary importance, if these alternatives are to replace surgical castration (SC) of piglets. Data on the sensory traits and consumers acceptance of IC and EM meat products are still limited. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to (1) describe the sensory profile by quantitative descriptive analysis and (2) test the perception and consumer liking of salami (dry-fermented sausage) and pancetta (dry-cured belly) from EM, IC and SC animals. The consumer tests included the scaling method and check-all-that-apply. Profiling showed that EM products were scored lower in the overall sensory quality compared to IC or SC. EM products differed mainly from IC and SC in the intensity of the manure, sweat odor and flavor, persistent impression and texture (hardness, gumminess and easy to fragment). Salami samples did not differ in liking. In pancetta, the differences were significant for odor liking and visual quality (expected liking). Consumers did not perceive EM products as inferior in terms of liking, while sensory profiling indicated differences for boar taint presence and texture. Using meat originating from IC did not result in any differences in consumers acceptance as compared to products from SC.
