Solid‐state dewetting is the heat‐induced agglomeration of thin metal films into defined nanoparticles (NPs). Dewetted Pt nanoparticles are investigated on F‐doped SnO2 (FTO) substrates as model binder‐free electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Dewetting of Pt films into particles exposes the FTO substrate and the metal/support (Pt‐FTO) contact line. Despite the decrease in Pt electrochemical surface area (ECSA) upon dewetting, dewetted NPs show a >3‐fold increase in ECSA‐normalized HER activity compared to as‐deposited nanocrystalline Pt films. Electrodes designed with dewetted Pt NPs of different sizes show that the HER activity does not only correlate with the ECSA but also increases with increasing the Pt‐FTO contact line length. The smaller the NPs, the larger the Pt‐FTO contact line, and the higher the activity. This effect is ascribed to electronic metal‐support interaction (EMSI), due to electron transfer from FTO to Pt. It is proposed that EMSI effects alter the electronic structure of Pt sites near the Pt‐FTO contact line, facilitating the H2 evolution kinetics. When NPs are a few nm‐sized, a large mass fraction of Pt is affected by EMSI, resulting in a further increase of HER activity compared to NPs ≥10 nm despite the lower ECSA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays decorated with Ni, Cu, and NiCu alloy thin films were investigated for the first time for the photocatalytic degradation of paracetamol in water solution under UV irradiation. Metallic co-catalysts were deposited on TiO2 nanotubes using magnetron sputtering. The influence of the metal layer composition and thickness on the photocatalytic activity was systematically studied. Photocatalytic experiments showed that only Cu-rich co-catalysts provide enhanced paracetamol degradation rates, whereas Ni-modified photocatalysts exhibit no improvement compared with unmodified TiO2. The best-performing material was obtained by sputtering a 20 nm thick film of 1:1 atomic ratio NiCu alloy: this material exhibits a reaction rate more than doubled compared with pristine TiO2, enabling the complete degradation of 10 mg L−1 of paracetamol in 8 h. The superior performance of NiCu-modified systems over pure Cu-based ones is ascribed to a Ni and Cu synergistic effect. Kinetic tests using selective holes and radical scavengers unveiled, unlike prior findings in the literature, that paracetamol undergoes direct oxidation at the photocatalyst surface via valence band holes. Finally, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) tests and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HR-MS) analysis were conducted to assess the degree of mineralization and identify intermediates. The electrochemical synthesis of α ${\alpha }$ ‐amino acids at room temperature and pressure is a sustainable alternative to conventional methods like microbial fermentation and Strecker synthesis. A custom‐built zero‐gap flow electrolyzer was used to study the electrosynthesis of alanine via the electrocatalytic reductive amination (ERA) of the corresponding biomass‐derivable α ${\alpha }$ ‐keto acid precursor – pyruvic acid (PA), and hydroxylamine (NH2OH) at very low pH. Non‐toxic, abundant, and easy to prepare TiO2/Ti electrocatalysts were utilized as the cathode. Three TiO2/Ti felt electrodes with different oxide thicknesses were prepared and their characterization results were correlated with their respective electrochemical performance in terms of Faradaic efficiency η ${\eta }$ , and partial current density j‾ ${\left|\overline{j}\right|}$. Cyclic voltammetry indicated a different electrocatalytic reduction process on hydrothermally treated electrodes, compared to thermally oxidized ones. Hydrothermally treated electrodes were also found to have the thickest porous anatase layer and achieved 50–75 % alanine conversion efficiencies. Optimization showed that the cell potential, reactant flow rate and the PA: NH2OH ratio were crucial parameters in determining the conversion efficiency. η ${\eta }$ and j‾ ${\left|\overline{j}\right|}$ were found to significantly decrease when an excess of is used and, an optimal alanine η ${\eta }$ of 75 % was achieved at 2.0 V applied cell potential and 10 mL/h reactant flow rate. In this work, NiCu co‐catalysts on TiO2 are studied for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. NiCu co‐catalyst films are deposited at room temperature by argon plasma sputtering on high aspect‐ratio anodic TiO2 nanotubes. To tune the Ni : Cu atomic ratio, alloys of various compositions were used as sputtering targets. Such co‐catalyst films are found to be amorphous with small nanocrystalline domains. A series of parameters is investigated, i. e., i) Ni : Cu relative ratio in the sputtered films, ii) NiCu film thickness, and iii) thickness of the TiO2 nanotube layers. The highest photocatalytic activity is obtained with 8 μm long TiO2 nanotubes, sputter‐coated with a 10 nm‐thick NiCu films with a 1 : 1 Ni : Cu atomic ratio. This photocatalyst reaches a stable hydrogen evolution rate of 186 μL h−1 cm−2, 4.6 and 3 times higher than that of Ni‐ and Cu‐TiO2, respectively, demonstrating a synergistic co‐catalytic effect of Ni and Cu in the alloy co‐catalyst film. We examine comparatively the performance of sputtered TiO2 rutile and anatase thin films as an electron transport layer (ETL) in MAPbI3‐based perovskite solar cells. Both anatase and rutile TiO2 ETLs are deposited (on fluorine‐doped tin oxide [FTO] substrates) by magnetron sputtering in the form of nanocrystalline thin films. We systematically investigate the role of crystallographic phase composition of TiO2 ETLs on the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells. The champion power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 18.4% and 17.7% under reverse scan mode are obtained for perovskite solar cells based on TiO2 anatase and TiO2 rutile ETL, respectively. The results show that the magnetron sputtering deposited ETLs differ from each other only in their phase composition while the overall performance of the devices is not greatly affected by the crystallographic phase of the TiO2 ETLs. Our results point to an important fact that for a proper and reliable comparison between the performance of TiO2 anatase and rutile ETLs, it is crucial to investigate films of similar morphology and structure that are synthesize under similar conditions. Herein we systematically investigate the influence of hydrogenation time and temperature on defects formation, structural changes, and co-catalyst free photocatalytic activity for epitaxially grown anatase thin films on strontium titanate single crystals. The photocatalytic activity trend of the anatase epi layers is similar to that of anatase powders and brookite single crystals in reported recent literature, that is, the H2 evolution rate exhibits a typical maximum upon hydrogenation under moderate annealing temperatures (500 °C). By combining surface sensitive X-ray diffraction methods and analytical high-resolution electron microscopy techniques we reveal quantitatively the oxygen loss from the epi-layer ascribed to the hydrogenation (H2 reduction) treatment. We observe specific physicochemical changes associated with the introduction of oxygen vacancies: (i) the formation of a nanoscale strained crystal surface, (ii) the agglomeration of point defects in the bulk of the anatase epi layer, and (iii) a transition towards a Ti2O3 like symmetry at the film surface, i.e. an evident oxygen deficiency at the epi layer surface in particular prominent for the most active sample as a function of the hydrogenation parameters. These extensive experimental findings allow us to propose an empirical model, which links detrimental and beneficial effects of Ti3+ centers and oxygen vacancies in the bulk and at the surface and their abundance to an optimum point defect configuration for water splitting via "grey" anatase. Herein we introduce for the first time a reduced "grey" brookite TiO2 photocatalyst, produced by thermal hydrogenation of brookite nanoparticles, that shows a remarkable noble metal free photocatalytic H2 evolution. Its activity is substantially higher than that of other TiO2 polymorphs, i.e. anatase or rutile, comparably sized and activated by hydrogenation under optimized conditions. Along with brookite powders, an oriented brookite single crystal was investigated as a defined surface to confirm the effects of the hydrogenation treatment. By a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron and X-ray characterization techniques applied to the powders and single crystal, we find that hydrogenation forms in brookite a defective crystalline surface layer rich in Ti3+ states. Amorphization effects, i.e. forming the so called "amorphous shell" as reported in previous work for black anatase TiO2, were not detected. Overall, we provide experimental evidence that hydrogenation forms in brookite a surface strained zone with point defects that are mediators for electron transfer to H2O, leading to a significantly enhanced noble metal free photocatalytic H2 evolution in comparison to anatase. Herein, the growth of substoichiometric tungsten oxide (WO3–x) nanowires (NWs) via thermal oxidation of W films (a few 10 to a few 100 nm thick) deposited by Ar‐plasma sputtering on fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates is reported. A thermal treatment at relatively low temperature (525–550 °C) in Ar at atmospheric pressure leads to the conversion of the W films into W suboxide (WO3–x) NW arrays. Such NWs have a length of ≈500 nm and their diameter ranges from 10 to 40 nm depending on the duration of the annealing process. These growth conditions for the formation of WO3–x NWs are significantly milder and more straightforward than those reported in previous literature. This avoids high temperatures (e.g., above 600 °C), vacuum conditions, or the addition of catalysts. A thermal‐oxidative approach of these sputtered films is suitable to directly form WO3–x NWs on various surfaces, including conductive substrates to fabricate photoelectrodes or large‐scale supports, e.g., for smart windows. In this work, we describe a simple anodization process of titanium in a hot phosphoric acid/ethylene glycol electrolyte that forms a hierarchically structured photocatalytically active TiO2 layer that consists directly of anatase nanocrystallites. Such anodic layers show, without any annealing, a high photocatalytic degradation activity for AO7 (an azo‐dye used as model pollutant) that is higher than the activity of comparable fully crystallized TiO2 nanotube layers. Furthermore, the hierarchically structured layers have a remarkable mechanical bending stability. These features make these novel anodic layers highly promising for applications in flexible substrate based photocatalytic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The engineering of the electron transport layer (ETL)/light absorber interface is explored in perovskite solar cells. Single‐crystalline TiO2 nanorod (NR) arrays are used as ETL and methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) as light absorber. A dual ETL surface modification is investigated, namely by a TiCl4 treatment combined with a subsequent PC61BM monolayer deposition, and the effects on the device photovoltaic performance were evaluated with respect to single modifications. Under optimized conditions, for the combined treatment synergistic effects are observed that lead to remarkable enhancements in cell efficiency, from 14.2% to 19.5%, and to suppression of hysteresis. The devices show JSC, VOC, and fill factor as high as 23.2 mA cm−2, 1.1 V, and 77%, respectively. These results are ascribed to a more efficient charge transfer across the ETL/perovskite interface, which originates from the passivation of defects and trap states at the ETL surface. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest cell performance ever reported for TiO2 NR‐based solar cells fabricated with conventional MAPI light absorber. Perspective wise, this ETL surface functionalization approach combined with more recently developed and better performing light absorbers, such as mixed cation/anion hybrid perovskite materials, is expected to provide further performance enhancements. Pt nanoparticles are typically decorated as co‐catalyst on semiconductors to enhance the photocatalytic performance. Due to the low abundance and high cost of Pt, reaching a high activity with minimized co‐catalyst loadings is a key challenge in the field. We explore a dewetting‐dealloying strategy to fabricate on TiO2 nanotubes nanoporous Pt nanoparticles, aiming at improving the co‐catalyst mass activity for H2 generation. For this, we sputter first Pt‐Ni bi‐layers of controllable thickness (nm range) on highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays, and then induce dewetting‐alloying of the Pt‐Ni bi‐layers by a suitable annealing step in a reducing atmosphere: the thermal treatment causes the Pt and Ni films to agglomerate and at the same time mix with each other, forming on the TiO2 nanotube surface metal islands of a mixed PtNi composition. In a subsequent step we perform chemical dealloying of Ni that is selectively etched out from the bimetallic dewetted islands, leaving behind nanoporous Pt decorations. Under optimized conditions, the nanoporous Pt‐decorated TiO2 structures show a>6 times higher photocatalytic H2 generation activity compared to structures modified with a comparable loading of dewetted, non‐porous Pt. We ascribe this beneficial effect to the nanoporous nature of the dealloyed Pt co‐catalyst, which provides an increased surface‐to‐volume ratio and thus a more efficient electron transfer and a higher density of active sites at the co‐catalyst surface for H2 evolution. Gold-decorated TiO2 nanotubes were used for the photocatalytic abatement of Hg(ii) in aqueous solutions. The presence of dewetted Au nanoparticles induces a strong enhancement of photocatalytic reduction and scavenging performances, with respect to naked TiO2. In the presence of chlorides, a massive formation of Hg2Cl2 nanowires, produced from Au nanoparticles, was observed using highly Au loaded photocatalysts to treat a 10 ppm Hg(ii) solution. EDS and XPS confirmed the nature of the photo-produced nanowires. In the absence of chlorides and/or at lower Hg(ii) starting concentrations, the scavenging of mercury proceeds through the formation of Hg–Au amalgams. Solar light driven Hg(ii) abatements up to 90% were observed after 24 h. ICP-MS analysis revealed that the removed Hg(ii) is accumulated on the photocatalyst surface. Regeneration of Hg-loaded exhaust photocatalysts was easily performed by anodic stripping of Hg(0) and Hg(i) to Hg(ii). Abstract: Separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers are key elements in designing photocatalysts. TiO2 in numerous geometries has been for many years the most studied photocatalyst. To overcome kinetic limitations and achieve swift charge transfer, TiO2 has been widely investigated with cocatalysts that are commonly randomly placed nanoparticles on a TiO2 surface. The poor control over cocatalyst placement in powder technology approaches can drastically hamper the photocatalytic efficiencies. Here in contrast it is shown that the site‐selective placement of suitable charge‐separation and charge‐transfer cocatalysts on a defined TiO2 nanotube morphology can provide an enhancement of the photocatalytic reactivity. A TiO2–WO3–Au electron‐transfer cascade photocatalyst is designed with nanoscale precision for H2 production on TiO2 nanotube arrays. Key aspects in the construction are the placement of the WO3/Au element at the nanotube top by site‐selective deposition and self‐ordered thermal dewetting of Au. In the ideal configuration, WO3 acts as a buffer layer for TiO2 conduction band electrons, allowing for their efficient transfer to the Au nanoparticles and then to a suitable environment for H2 generation, while TiO2 holes due to intrinsic upward band bending in the nanotube walls and short diffusion length undergo a facilitated transfer to the electrolyte where oxidation of hole‐scavenger molecules takes place. These photocatalytic structures can achieve H2 generation rates significantly higher than any individual cocatalyst–TiO2 combination, including a classic noble metal–TiO2 configuration.
