Abstract

تُعتبر النظرية النسبية العامة أداة أساسية في دراسة الظواهر الفلكية مثل الثقوب السوداء و توسُّع الكون، وذلك من الناحية النظرية المستندة إلى العلاقات الرياضية بالأساس. تُعتبر النسبية العامة في جوهرها هي أحد أجمل وأكثر المفاهيم ثورية في العلم الحديث، فحقل الثقالة هو هندسة فضاء مُنحني رباعي الأبعاد نسميه الزمكان، هندسة المُنحنيات هي الأساس الرياضي للنسبية العامة ومعادلة حقل الثقالة المُعمَّمة نسبوياً هي المعادلة الرئيسية لهذه النظرية ويمكننا استخدام هذه المعادلة لدراسة حقول الثقالة المختلفة مثل حقل الجاذبية المُحيط بثقب أسود. لذلك قمنا على نحو مُختصر بدراسة هذه المعادلة انطلاقاً من علاقات الميكانيك التقليدي، مُستندين بالضرورة على الأساس الرياضي في هندسة المُنحنيات، والمعادلة الجيوديزية لحركة جسيم يقع في حقل ثقالة وصولاً إلى أهم نتائج النظرية النسبية العامة كالثقوب السوداء وأمواج الجاذبية.

2. Improving the surgical consenting process for patients with acute hip fractures: a pilot quality improvement project

Abstract

Abstract Background Consenting patients for trauma procedures following hip fracture is a key stage in the treatment pathway from admission to the operating theatre. Errors in this process can result in delayed procedures which may negatively impact patient recovery. The aim of this project was to identify and reduce errors in our consenting process for patients with capacity. Methods Consent forms for all adult patients with capacity admitted for surgical repair of traumatic hip fracture were reviewed over a 4-week period. The baseline measurement (n = 24), identified errors in three key process measures: clarity of documentation, failure to record procedure-specific risks and not offering a copy of the consent form to the patient. Pre-printed stickers and targeted teaching were then introduced as quality improvement measures. Their impact was evaluated over subsequent 4-week review of the same patient demographic, with further refinement of these interventions being carried out and re-evaluated for a final cycle. Results Cycle 1 (n = 26) following targeted teaching demonstrated a reduction in abbreviations from 38 to 20%, while doubling the documentation of discussion of procedure-specific risks from 31 to 72%. More patients were offered a copy of their consent form, rising from 12 to 48%. Cycle 2 (n = 24) saw the introduction of pre-printed “risk of procedure” stickers. Although clarity measures continued to improve, quality of pre-procedure risk documentation remained static while the number of forms being offered to patients fell to 8%. Conclusions Our project would suggest that while pre-printed stickers can be useful memory aids, specific teaching on consenting produces the greatest benefit. The usage of such tools should therefore be limited, as adjuncts only to specific training.

تُعد دراسة ميكانيك جمل(منظومات) الجسيمات في نظرية النسبية الخاصة من أكثر المسائل تعقيداً. لكن وعلى الرغم من ذلك فإن هذه الدراسة تضعنا أمام وضع حجر الأساس لبناء مجموعة من القوانين الهامة. حيث تم تعيين حركة جمل جسيمات ككل من خلال طاقتها واندفاعها وكتلتها السكونية، كما تبيَّن أن تعيين الطاقة الكلية للجملة ذات الأفعال المتبادلة يتطلب الأخذ بالحسبان طاقات هذه الأفعال المتبادلة بين الجسيمات. وخلافاً لجمل الأفعال المتبادلة من جراء التصادمات، تم تعيين صيغ تقريبية للأفعال المتبادلة بين الجسيمات المشحونة من خلال دراسة تصادم الجسيمات النسبوية- مفعول كومبتون. تم أخيراً دراسة حالة حركة جمل الجسيمات المشحونة ضعيفة الفعل المتبادل، ومناقشة حركة الجسيمات المترابطة مع بعضها من خلال الأفعال الكهرطيسية المتبادلة باستخدام مفهوم الفعل المتبادل بين جسيمات الجملة.

4. Development and Automation of a Bacterial Biosensor to the Targeting of the Pollutants Toxic Effects by Portable Raman Spectrometer

Abstract

Water quality monitoring requires a rapid and sensitive method that can detect multiple hazardous pollutants at trace levels. This study aims to develop a new generation of biosensors using a low-cost fiber-optic Raman device. An automatic measurement system was thus conceived, built and successfully tested with toxic substances of three different types: antibiotics, heavy metals and herbicides. Raman spectroscopy provides a multiparametric view of metabolic responses of biological organisms to these toxic agents through their spectral fingerprints. Spectral analysis identified the most susceptible macromolecules in an E. coli model strain, providing a way to determine specific toxic effects in microorganisms. The automation of Raman analysis reduces the number of spectra required per sample and the measurement time: for four samples, time was cut from 3 h to 35 min by using a multi-well sample holder without intervention from an operator. The correct classifications were, respectively, 99%, 82% and 93% for the different concentrations of norfloxacin, while the results were 85%, 93% and 81% for copper and 92%, 90% and 96% for 3,5-dichlorophenol at the three tested concentrations. The work initiated here advances the technology needed to use Raman spectroscopy coupled with bioassays so that together, they can advance field toxicological testing.

5. A Preliminary Numerical Study to Compare the Physical Method and Machine Learning Methods Applied to GPR Data for Underground Utility Network Characterization

Abstract

In the field of geophysics and civil engineering applications, ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology has become one of the emerging non-destructive testing (NDT) methods thanks to its ability to perform tests without damaging structures. However, NDT applications, such as concrete rebar assessments, utility network surveys or the precise localization of embedded cylindrical pipes still remain challenging. The inversion of geometric parameters, such as depth and radius of embedded cylindrical pipes, as well as the dielectric parameters of its surrounding material, is of great importance for preventive measures and quality control. Furthermore, the precise localization is mandatory for critical underground utility networks, such as gas, power and water lines. In this context, innovative signal processing techniques associated with GPR are capable of performing physical and geometric characterization tasks. This paper evaluates the performance of a supervised machine learning and ray-based methods on GPR data. Support vector machines (SVM) classification, support vector machine regression (SVR) and ray-based methods are all used to correlate information about the radius and depth of embedded pipes with the velocity of stratified media in various numerical configurations. The approach is based on the hyperbola trace emerging in a set of B-scans, given that the shape of the hyperbola varies greatly with pipe depth and radius as well as with velocity of the medium. According to the ray-based method, an inversion of the wave velocity and pipe radius is performed by applying an appropriate nonlinear least mean squares inversion technique. Feature selection within machine learning models is also implemented on the information chosen from observed hyperbola travel times. Simulated data are obtained by means of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with the 2D numerical tool GprMax. The study is carried out on mono-static, ground-coupled GPR datasets. The preliminary study showed that the proposed machine learning methods outperforms the ray-based method for estimating radius, depth and velocity. SVR, for instance, calculates depth and radius values with mean absolute relative errors of 0.39% and 6.3%, respectively, with regard to the ground truth. A parametric comparison of the aforementioned methodologies is also included in the performance analysis in terms of relative error.

6. Motion and radiation of System Consisting of Two Charges

Abstract

In this paper, we discussed the motion of charged particles in the external fields and the radiation of a system of two action reciprocal charges. Where we find that the motion of each charged particle, or precisely the motion of the moving charged particles in orbits has conical forms, and their foci are located in the center of inertia, and this is compatible with Kepler's problem in determining the motion of the planets. As we have shown, the results obtained are that a system consisting of two identical particles, or of different particles, with the same ratio , can not radiate in a dipole approximation, and that the moving charge in a closed orbit continuously radiates energy. The differential cross section of particles scattering was calculated according to the Coulomb law, and the radiation value resulting from the incident of a beam of charged particles was finally calculated on a static charge (the braking radiation), where the radiation energy was found to be inversely proportional to the particle velocity as well as the cube with the radius of the radiation correction, and it is associated with the angle of scattering and the azimuth angle.

7. Using Hamilton-Jacoby equation to study the relativistic theory of the electron and some of its applications

Abstract

In this article, we used the generalized Hamilton-Jacoby equation to study the relative motion of the electron in the arbitrary electromagnetic field, depending on the action function(the principle of the least action), taking into account the relationship between the Hamilton and Lagrange functions( ), starting with the equations of energy and motion for electron in the theory of special relativity, where the Lagrangian were chosen so that the principle of variation is equal to zero, thus the Lagrange equation was verified. The first and second sets of Hamilton's equations were obtained and then Hamilton's conservation law, ie electron energy. Study of some applications of the Hamilton-Jacoby equation on the free motion of the particle, circular motion and the adiabatic transformations was discussed. Kepler problem of the hydrogen atom was then discussed in relativistic theory. The equation of the motion path of the electron was calculated and the energy of the vibration and the frequency of the vibration were calculated.

We use Dedukti as a logical framework for interoperability. We use automated tools to translate different developments made in HOL and in Coq to Dedukti, and we combine them to prove new results. We illustrate our approach with a concrete example where we instantiate a sorting algorithm written in Coq with the natural numbers of HOL.

Dedukti is a logical framework based on the lambda-Pi-calculus modulo rewriting, which extends the lambda-Pi-calculus with rewrite rules. In this paper, we show how to translate the proofs of a family of HOL proof assistants to Dedukti. The translation preserves binding, typing, and reduction. We implemented this translation in an automated tool and used it to successfully translate the OpenTheory standard library.

Abstract

The algebraic lambda calculus and the linear algebraic lambda calculus are two extensions of the classical lambda calculus with linear combinations of terms. They arise independently in distinct contexts: the former is a fragment of the differential lambda calculus, the latter is a candidate lambda calculus for quantum computation. They differ in the handling of application arguments and algebraic rules. The two languages can simulate each other using an algebraic extension of the well-known call-by-value and call-by-name CPS translations. These simulations are sound, in that they preserve reductions. In this paper, we prove that the simulations are actually complete, strengthening the connection between the two languages.

Abstract

We examine the relationship between the algebraic lambda-calculus, a fragment of the differential lambda-calculus and the linear-algebraic lambda-calculus, a candidate lambda-calculus for quantum computation. Both calculi are algebraic: each one is equipped with an additive and a scalar-multiplicative structure, and their set of terms is closed under linear combinations. However, the two languages were built using different approaches: the former is a call-by-name language whereas the latter is call-by-value; the former considers algebraic equalities whereas the latter approaches them through rewrite rules. In this paper, we analyse how these different approaches relate to one another. To this end, we propose four canonical languages based on each of the possible choices: call-by-name versus call-by-value, algebraic equality versus algebraic rewriting. We show that the various languages simulate one another. Due to subtle interaction between beta-reduction and algebraic rewriting, to make the languages consistent some additional hypotheses such as confluence or normalisation might be required. We carefully devise the required properties for each proof, making them general enough to be valid for any sub-language satisfying the corresponding properties.

Abstract

Brachial plexus injuries usually result in significant upper limb disabilities and shoulder joint instability. Primary nerve reconstruction procedures are more effective if performed within six months from the injury. Secondary procedures, including muscle transfers, are usually indicated for delayed presentation (>6 months) or when the outcomes of primary procedures are unsatisfactory. A comprehensive systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, PubMed, and Cochrane databases was conducted in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Data, including demographic information, time to surgery, the extent of brachial plexus injury, surgical techniques, follow-up duration, and functional outcomes were collected and tabulated. Meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4 software ([Computer program]. Version 5.3. Copenhagen: The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, 2014). Seven studies were eligible to be included in this review, with a total of 218 patients. The average patient age was 28.39 ± 3 years, with a mean time to surgery of 29.87 ± 18 months. Forty-six (46) patients (21.10%) were treated as delayed presentation and 172 patients (78.89%) had muscle transfer performed as a secondary procedure. The mean time at follow-up was 18.86 ± 13.5 months. Upper trapezius muscle transfer was the most common transferred muscle (100%) either in isolation (n=159, 72.93%) or in combination with lower trapezius transfer (n=59, 27.06%). The mean preoperative and postoperative shoulder abduction were 12.22 ± 10.09 degrees and 58.36 ± 32.33 degrees, respectively (p < 0.05). Abstract

Microalgal bioprocesses are increasing in multiple industrial sectors for production at large scales. Nevertheless, classical sensors are still used but are not adapted for production monitoring, leading to monoparametric, invasive and time-consuming solutions. Future approaches should eliminate those weaknesses and take advantage of optical methods to optimize the monitoring. This work is focussed on the concrete application of Raman spectroscopy to characterize the physiological kinetics of a microalgal process. The monitoring of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii growth in photobioreactors led us to build its specific Raman spectral database. The complex Raman signatures acquired showed 35 reproducible bands for each day of growth, corresponding to the spectral fingerprints of the cell metabolites, such as chlorophyll a , beta-carotene, nucleic acids and lipids. In total, 2688 spectra were compiled in a database representing the cellular chemical fingerprints in three physiological stages and showed progressive variations between the days of acquisition. New data acquisitions allowed us to build a trial for blind validation and to characterize the bioprocesses with 89.2% accuracy. To complete the study, transcriptomic experiments following the transcript expression of two different metabolic pathways of the microalgae confirmed the cell physiology attributions made by the Raman spectroscopy. This work enables us to query the bioprocess status directly from the cells by attributing a spectrum to the current cell physiology.

Abstract

An egg product is a complex matrix, mainly composed of water, proteins and lipids. It also contains carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and many other compounds in varying concentrations. This chemical complexity makes it difficult to analyze, and most of the protocols are mainly concerned with the albumen and vitellus fractions, aside from the whole egg product. The hygienic quality and freshness of eggs can be assessed according to physico-chemical or microbiological criteria, imposed by the regulations in force. The state provides procedures and recommendations for the production and marketing of such products. Criteria and procedures vary from region to region, for example European legislation forbids the breaking of eggs by centrifugation for eggs intended for the food industry whereas American legislation allows the possibility of breaking eggs by centrifugation if they are clean, disinfected and intact and if they ultimately undergo heat treatment (baking etc.). In addition to the procedures and recommendations concerning the production process, the hygienic quality of egg products is ensured by controlling the physico-chemical and microbiological quality of the raw materials used and the finished products. European legislation thus provides maximum levels for certain compounds such as lactic acid or succinic acid at different points in the production chain.

The previous chapter focused on illustrating the potential of the latest analytical equipment to discover markers or groups of markers that are characteristic of LE spoilage. Depending on the resolving power of this chemotyping equipment, these markers would be either in the form of single molecules (in the case of high or low resolution spectrometers such as NMR or MS often coupled with chromatography), or in the form of groups of these same molecules, all of which are then identified unambiguously (NMR-HR and MS-HR, often coupled with chromatography), or in the form of a chemical signature reflecting the contribution of large chemical groups present in the sample (FTIR, NIRS, Raman).

Abstract

Bioreporters are widespread in the ecotoxicological field, and they are used in concert with a range of physico-chemical methods for environmental characterization. These biological methods allow the assessment of other parameters that are not otherwise accessible. Among the broad diversity of available bioreporters, bacterial approaches are particularly interesting for their simple implementation, low cost and timeliness of their response (because of their metabolic kinetics and their growth rate). In this chapter, we are interested in the primary proposed strategies from one initial assumption: the use of one bioreporter to test one parameter. This strategy rapidly reached its limits (for lack of specificity or representativity), thus opening the way for other biological approaches that were more reliable but also more complex (implemented technology and data treatment).

Abstract

International audience; Defining a theory, such as arithmetic, geometry, or set theory, in predicate logic just requires to chose function and predicate symbols and axioms, that express the meaning of these symbols. Using, this way, a single logical framework, to define all these theories, has many advantages. First, it requires less efforts, as the logical connectives, ∧, ∨, ∀... and their associated deduction rules are defined once and for all, in the framework and need not be redefined for each theory. Similarly, the notions of proof, model... are defined once and for all. And general theorems, such as the soundness and the completeness theorems, can be proved once and for all. Another advantage of using such a logical framework is that this induces a partial order between theories. For instance, Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with the axiom of choice (ZFC) is an extension of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory (ZF), as it contains the same axioms, plus the axiom of choice. It is thus obvious that any theorem of ZF is provable in ZFC, and for each theorem of ZFC, we can ask the question of its provability in ZF. Several theorems of ZFC, that are provable in ZF have been identified, and these theorems can be used in extensions of ZF that are inconsistent with the axiom of choice. Finally, using such a common framework permits to combine, in a proof, lemmas proved in different theories: if T is a theory expressed in a language L and T a theory expressed in a language L , if A is expressed in L ∩ L , A ⇒ B is provable in T , and A is provable in T , then B is provable in T ∪ T. Despite these advantages, several logical systems have been defined, not as theories in predicate logic, but as independent systems: Simple type theory, also known as Higher-order logic, is defined as an independent system—although it is also possible to express it as a theory in predicate logic. Similarly, Intuitionistic type theory, the Calculus of constructions, the Calculus of inductive constructions... are defined as independent systems. As a consequence, it is difficult to reuse a formal proof developed in an automated or interactive theorem prover based on one of these formalisms in another, without redeveloping it. It is also difficult to combine lemmas proved in different systems: the realm of formal proofs is today a tower of Babel, just like the realm of theories was, before the design of predicate logic. The reason why these formalisms have not been defined as theories in predicate logic is that predicate logic, as a logical framework, has several limitations, that make it difficult to express modern logical systems.

International audience; The scratch test was used to determine the coating-substrate adhesion of d.c. magnetron-sputtered films on substrates. Several systems are discussed, including Cu, Al, AlN/XC70 steel; Cu, Au/Al2O3; and Cu/Ni. Furthermore, the following effects of deposition conditions on adhesion are also discussed: the effect of heating the sample during or after deposition; the effect of applying a bias voltage on the substrate during deposition; the effect of ion bombardment etching of the substrate surface; the effect of ageing treatment after deposition; the effect of chemical etching treatment before deposition. The scratch track was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and some energy-dispersive X-ray spectra were recorded to reveal whether the coating was completely removed from its substrate or not. The adhesion failure probability was estimated for each load (Q) by optically inspecting the channels. A correlation between the thermal contact resistance and the adhesion, as determined by the scratch test, is found. To understand the origin of the mean critical load and interface evolution, observations were made using SEM, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the structural change of the film and formation of a complex interface appear to be the main reasons for interface evolution. In most cases, the widening of the interfacial region offers a better film anchorage to its substrate, which requires a notably high stylus load to produce an adhesion failure.

International audience; In the field of toxicological bioassays, the latest progress in Raman spectroscopy opens new research perspectives on a fast method of observing metabolic responses against toxic agents. This technique offers a multiparametric approach, providing an overview of the physiological changes that are caused by pollutants. However, physiological spectral fingerprints require complex chemometric methods for proper analysis. In this study, particular attention has been given to the elaboration of an "aberrant spectra" detection strategy to highlight the effects of arsenic on the bacteria Escherichia coli. This strategy significantly improved spectra classification, consistent with a dose response effect of the four tested concentrations of the metal. Indeed, the correct classification score of the spectra increased from 88 to more than 99%. The exposure time effect has also been investigated. The fine analysis of Raman spectroscopy fingerprints enabled the design of different "spectral signatures", highlighting early and late effects of arsenic on bacteria. The observed variations are in agreement with the expected toxicity and encourage the use of Raman spectroscopy for toxic element detection.

Abstract

Polyether-based polyurethanes (PBP) are extremely problematic polymers due to their long persistence in the environment. Moreover, the assessment of PBP biodegradation remains biased due to the inability of conventional methods to determine how their diverse subunits are degraded. To improve our knowledge of PBP biodegradation, we used Raman spectroscopy to identify patterns of PBP biodegradation. Specifically, PBP biodegradation was assessed using a microbial inoculum isolated from an industrial soil in which polyurethanes have been buried for 40 years. During a 28-day biodegradation assay, the PBP biodegradation level reached 27.5% (w/w), in addition to undergoing profound alteration of the PBP composition as identified by chemical analyses. After microbial degradation, Raman analyses revealed the disappearance of the polymer's amorphous region, which contains a high polyol content, whereas the isocyanate-rich crystalline regions were preserved. The use of Raman spectroscopy appears to be a particularly useful tool to enhance our assessment of polymer biodegradation.

Nevertheless, this technique requires a standardized procedure to be applied in the industrial context. Our study shows that the variability between spectral fingerprints is related to the physiological state of the microbial species and the growth phase of the bacteria plays a crucial role in its identification by Raman spectroscopy. To improve the discrimination between closely related bacterial species, a procedure based on the selection of bacterial spectra in the exponential growth phase was proposed. Different ways to introduce Raman spectroscopy in the ISO 6579:2002 standards are also proposed from the entire process to a shorter protocol. In the latter case, the identification of bacterial colonies after the selective enrichment step was proposed with the advantages of this path in terms of simplicity and rapidity (analysis time is reduced up to 50 h from the 100 h required by the standard). The protocol validated using six food categories from industrial partners have presented a good correlation by confirmation with other laboratory classical methods. In the future, this procedure could be introduced to the control system of the food production chain with a reliable database for various microorganisms encountered in this field.

Abstract

The algebraic lambda calculus and the linear algebraic lambda calculus are two extensions of the classical lambda calculus with linear combinations of terms. They arise independently in distinct contexts: the former is a fragment of the differential lambda calculus, the latter is a candidate lambda calculus for quantum computation. They differ in the handling of application arguments and algebraic rules. The two languages can simulate each other using an algebraic extension of the well-known call-by-value and call-by-name CPS translations. These simulations are sound, in that they preserve reductions. Abstract

International audience; This paper considers the difficulties linked to the static scheduling strategy of AspectJ and shows how to overcome them by turning to a more dynamic strategy, making it possible to order, cancel, and deploy aspects at runtime. We show that this more dynamic strategy can be obtained by a minor update of the semantics of AspectJ introducing the notion of current aspect group, that is, the aspects scheduled for the current join point. We show how to reflect this change at the language level and present a prototype of the resulting AspectJ variant, Dynamic AspectJ. This prototype reuses AspectJ to perform a first step of static weaving, which we complement by a second step of dynamic weaving, implemented through a thin interpretation layer. This can be seen as an interesting example of reconciling interpreters and compilers, the dynamic and the static world.

Abstract

Abstract Background In Palestine, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality after lung cancer. No studies have examined the relationship between CRC awareness and attitudes. This study aimed to investigate the interplay between CRC awareness and attitudes among the Palestinian population. Methods A nationwide cross-sectional survey was carried out between July 2019 and March 2020. Convenience sampling was used to collect data from hospitals, primary healthcare facilities, and public areas in 11 governorates. Modified, translated-into-Arabic versions of the validated Bowel Cancer Awareness Measure and Cancer Awareness Measure-Mythical Causes Scale were utilized to assess the awareness of CRC signs/symptoms, risk factors, and causation myths. The cumulative awareness score for each domain was computed and stratified into tertiles. The top tertile denoted ‘high’ awareness, while the remaining two tertiles denoted ‘low’ awareness. Results The final analysis included 4,623 participants; of whom, 3115 (67.4%) reported positive attitudes toward CRC. In total, 1,849 participants (40.0%) had high awareness of CRC signs/symptoms. There was no association between displaying a high awareness of CRC signs/symptoms and having positive attitudes toward CRC. A total of 1,840 participants (38.9%) showed high awareness of CRC risk factors. Participants with high CRC risk factor awareness were more likely to display positive attitudes toward CRC (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.07–1.39). Only 219 participants (4.7%) had high awareness of CRC causation myths. Participants with high awareness of CRC causation myths were more likely to exhibit positive attitudes toward CRC (OR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.71–3.58). Conclusion A high awareness level of CRC risk factors and causation myths was associated with a greater likelihood of demonstrating positive attitudes toward CRC in terms of perceived susceptibility, importance of early detection, and consequences of developing the disease. Future educational interventions should focus on raising public awareness about CRC, with a particular emphasis on risk factors and causation myths, to maximize the potential for shaping favorable attitudes toward the disease.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic is a serious threat to everyone’s health. Numerous studies have demonstrated that vaccines are very effective in preventing COVID-19-related severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Children’s vaccination exerts its protecting effect by preventing the spread of the virus. The purpose of this study was to analyze the rate of COVID-19 immunization among Lebanese children aged 1 to 11 years and assess parental factors that affect immunization rates. Methods An online cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2023. The online survey was distributed across all social media channels, including the Ministry of Public Health website. Results A total of 390 parents filled the survey (mean age = 37.48 ± 8.39 years; 50.5% mothers; 70% with a university level of education). Mothers compared to fathers, having a history of bad reaction to a vaccine vs. not, and higher vaccine hesitancy were significantly associated with less willingness to administer the vaccine to the child. Trusting pharmaceutical companies was significantly associated with more willingness to administer the vaccine to the child. Conclusion The results of this study show that the factors associated with parents’ decisions to vaccinate their children may vary. Our findings conclude that vaccine acceptance is being highly associated with parental concerns, trust, and information regarding the vaccine safety and efficacy.

PURPOSETo explore public awareness of myths around colorectal cancer (CRC) causation in Palestine and to examine factors associated with good awareness.MATERIALS AND METHODSConvenience sampling was used to recruit adult Palestinians from governmental hospitals, primary health care centers, and public spaces. Recognizing 13 myths around CRC causation was assessed using a translated-into-Arabic version of the Cancer Awareness Measure-Mythical Causes Scale. Awareness level was determined based on the number of CRC mythical causes recognized: poor (0-4), fair (5-9), and good (10-13). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the association between sociodemographic characteristics and displaying good awareness. It adjusted for age group, sex, education, occupation, monthly income, residence, marital status, having chronic diseases, being a vegetarian, knowing someone with cancer, and site of data collection.RESULTSOf 5,254 participants approached, 4,877 agreed to participate (response rate, 92.3%). A total of 4,623 questionnaires were included in the final analysis: 2,700 from the West Bank and Jerusalem (WBJ) and 1,923 from the Gaza Strip. Only 219 participants (4.7%) demonstrated good awareness of myths around CRC causation. WBJ participants were twice more likely than those from the Gaza Strip to display good recognition (5.9% v 3.1%). Male sex, living in the WBJ, and visiting hospitals were all associated with an increase in the likelihood of displaying good awareness. Conversely, knowing someone with cancer was associated with a decrease in the likelihood of displaying good awareness. Having a physical trauma was the most recognized CRC causation myth (n = 2,752, 59.5%), whereas eating food containing additives was the least (n = 456, 9.8%).CONCLUSIONOnly 4.7% displayed good ability to recognize myths around CRC causation. Future educational interventions are needed to help the public distinguish the evidence-based versus mythical causes of CRC.

Abstract This study explored the anticipated time to seek medical advice for possible colorectal cancer (CRC) signs/symptoms and its association with CRC symptom awareness. In addition, it examined perceived barriers that may delay seeking medical advice. Palestinian adults were recruited from hospitals, primary healthcare centers, and public spaces in 11 governorates. A modified, translated-into-Arabic version of the validated Bowel Cancer Awareness Measure was used. The questionnaire comprised three sections: sociodemographics, assessment of CRC symptom awareness and time to seek medical advice, and barriers to early presentation. A total of 4623 participants were included. The proportion that reported seeking immediate medical advice for possible CRC signs/symptoms with blood or mass ranged from 47.1% for ‘blood in stools’ to 59.5% for ‘bleeding from back passage’. Less than half of the participants reported immediate seeking of medical advice for non-specific symptoms (ranging from 5.4% for ‘loss of appetite’ to 42.0% for ‘anemia’) and other gastrointestinal symptoms (ranging from 7.7% for ‘feeling persistently full’ to 35.7% for ‘change in bowel habits’). Good CRC symptom awareness was associated with higher likelihood of seeking medical advice within a week from recognizing a CRC symptom. About 13.0% reported a delay to visit their doctor after recognizing a CRC symptom. The most reported barriers were practical with ‘would try some herbs first’ (50.9%) as the leading barrier. CRC symptoms with blood or mass prompted earlier help seeking. Participants with good CRC awareness were more likely to seek medical advice within a week.

Abstract

Introduction Psychological aspects are common in patients with heart failure (HF). Psychological aspects have negative consequences in patients with HF. Objective This study was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of psychological aspects in Jordanian patients with HF. Methods This study is a qualitative study conducted with the participation of 24 patients with HF. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Results The main theme of the findings can be expressed as “Consequences of psychological aspects of HF.” The following four sub-themes emerged from the data: social isolation, disturbance of feelings, being non-compliant, and growing burden on the health care system. Conclusion The findings revealed the need for informing healthcare providers about the negative consequences of psychological aspects and develop clinical guidelines to evaluate psychological aspects to support these patients.

The total score (ranging from 0 to 12) was calculated and categorized into three categories based on the number of symptoms recognized: poor (0 to 4), fair (5 to 8), and good awareness (9 to 12). Results Of 5254 approached, 4877 participants completed the questionnaire (response rate = 92.3%). A total of 4623 questionnaires were included in the analysis; 1923 were from the Gaza Strip and 2700 from the West Bank and Jerusalem (WBJ). Participants from the Gaza Strip were younger, gained lower monthly income, and had less chronic diseases than participants in the WBJ. The most frequently identified CRC sign/symptom was ‘lump in the abdomen’ while the least was ‘pain in the back passage’. Only 1849 participants (40.0%, 95% CI: 39.0%-41.0%) had a good awareness level of CRC signs/symptoms. Abstract

Microalgae provide valuable bio-components with economic and environmental benefits. The monitoring of microalgal production is mostly performed using different sensors and analytical methods that, although very powerful, are limited to qualified users. This study proposes an automated Raman spectroscopy-based sensor for the online monitoring of microalgal production. For this purpose, an in situ system with a sampling station was made of a light-tight optical chamber connected to a Raman probe. Microalgal cultures were routed to this chamber by pipes connected to pumps and valves controlled and programmed by a computer. The developed approach was evaluated on Parachlorella kessleri under different culture conditions at a laboratory and an industrial algal platform. As a result, more than 4000 Raman spectra were generated and analysed by statistical methods. These spectra reflected the physiological state of the cells and demonstrate the ability of the developed sensor to monitor the physiology of microalgal cells and their intracellular molecules of interest in a complex production environment.
