As a popular tenant underpinning paediatric health service provision, the ability of health professionals to achieve Family-Centred Care (FCC) is often questioned. A major factor has been the judgmental attitudes and behaviour of health professionals. According to expectancy-value theory, individuals' behavioural decisions are based on their attitudes and beliefs. In this sense, this study assessed the hypothesis: when necessity beliefs (beliefs and attitudes) rise, the actual implementation of FCC components (behavioural decisions) will improve. Using a correlation design, the study measured staff perceived self-reported implementation of FCC in their practice and their necessity beliefs of its core components using a modified questionnaire. Outcomes of 65 questionnaires revealed an overall mean of self reported implementation of 2.37/5.0 (SD = 0.57) and an overall mean of necessity beliefs of 3.06/5.0 (SD = 1.04). A significant moderate correlation (Spearman's rho (64) = -0.4, p < 0.001) indicated that professionals better practiced FCC components they favourably perceived necessary. It is recommended that policymakers should focus on changing attitudes of professionals towards FCC elements. The outcomes suggest that education that positively influences the attitudes and beliefs of health professionals may facilitate the involvement of families, and subsequently, better health outcomes for children.

ABSTRACT Background Aim Methods Results Conclusion Asthma is a major health issue with an extensive burden to family and health systems. Different measures were used previously to assess disease burden, including prevalence, school performance, parental perceptions, and cost among others.The purpose of this study was to assess the burden of asthma among schoolchildren using parental and child reports and metered‐dose inhaler (MDI) demonstration.A descriptive exploratory design based on parent and child self‐reports was employed. Parents of children with asthma completed a questionnaire about asthma management and burden including symptoms and health services use. A sample of children with asthma completed a questionnaire measuring their perception of asthma management at school. An assessment of children's proper use of MDI inhalers was also conducted.The burden of asthma was high in the current sample with the majority of children experiencing symptoms, asthma exacerbations, emergency department (ED) visits, and admission because of their asthma. The majority of participating children also performed incorrect inhaler technique, which reflects uncontrolled asthma and poor management. Parental perception of their child's health compared well with their burden of asthma.The outcomes of this study and previous reports show an alarmingly high burden of asthma. Clinical instructors (CIs) assist student nurses within the context of their pediatric clinical education to assimilate into their new roles and develop their own clinical expertise. This involves acquisition of knowledge and skills including the adoption of Child and Family Centered Care (CFCC) principles. This study explored CIs experiences of CFCC in clinical settings by investigating their views and perceptions of its implementation within the clinical education process. A mixed-method approach was used. A focus group was employed to collect data from 7 participants recruited from one faculty of nursing. A questionnaire was also completed by 5 participants to enrich the data collection process. Descriptive statistics used to describe their perceived importance of CFCC, and conventional content analysis was used to organize data and identify themes. While quantitative responses revealed discrepant findings, qualitative data resulted in three themes 1) Clinical instructors (CIs) know CFCC, acknowledge its importance, and take action for that 2) Facilitators and challenges of adopting CFCC in clinical education, and 3) CIs approaches to implement CFCC. While CI's were able to facilitate the implementation of CFCC despite the barriers, their whole experience circulated around external factors including the clinical environment and its role in facilitating or hindering the educational process including CFCC implementation. Program administrators should address clinical instructors concerns regarding barriers to CFCC implementation in clinical practice including the evaluation process. They should also ensure appropriate training is provided for healthcare professionals to enable them to effectively engage in CFCC. • This study addressed the CFCC research-practice gap and the role of instructors in linking theory to practice • Clinical instructors acknowledge the importance of CFCC and blame external barriers for its improper adoption • Clinical instructors use different approaches to facilitate the implementation and improve students' experiences of CFCC. While considered relatively benign by some, child marriage is considered a profoundly problematic gender inequity issue. There are intensifying efforts to end child marriage and improve female wellbeing including campaigns that challenge the cultural boundaries of restrictive traditions. While many studies investigated child marriage and its drivers, behind the scene perceptions cannot be ignored. Given the sensitivity of the issue and to explore the public perspectives of child marriage, this study employed a qualitative content analysis by analyzing 105 comments attached to three posted Facebook reports on child marriage. These posts discussed the issue of child marriage and provided detailed reports of the significance of the issue and its effect on children and the society. A textual analysis of the comments regarding attitudes toward child marriage was conducted focusing on the latent content to elicit thematic aspects from the posted content. Four themes have emerged: conspiracy; false study/report; child marriage is acceptable; and ignorance. Outcomes recognize child marriage as an acceptable practice where such reports considered part of a greater conspiracy. Saturated with conspiracy ideation, females also had negative attitudes and supported child marriage. Given the influence of social media in the construction of public opinion, this study suggests the need to consider these views in constructing strategies to end child marriage. Childhood asthma is a highly prevalent chronic illness with a large burden. Schools play an essential role in helping children with asthma manage their illness. This study assessed primary school teachers’ knowledge and confidence in managing children with asthma in Jordan. A descriptive correlational design was used. A total of 131 teachers from 10 primary schools participated in the study and completed the asthma knowledge questionnaire and the confidence scale. Findings demonstrated low teacher knowledge scores (10.47/32) yet moderate levels of confidence in asthma management (59.3/100). No correlation and no significant difference in knowledge and confidence were found between teachers based on their demographics. Findings from this study are consistent with prior research regarding poor knowledge and limited confidence in asthma management among school teachers. The overrated confidence might be explained by the Dunning–Kruger effect. Findings are discussed about supportive efforts to improve teachers’ knowledge and skills of asthma management in schools. Students enter nursing degree programs through a variety of pathways. This article reports on a study that investigated the success and experience of these students. The aim was to determine any linkages between the pathway of entry in a preregistration nursing course and the academic achievements of these students. To achieve this aim, a descriptive correlational design was used to gather information from students enrolled in four different streams of a Bachelor of Nursing program over a 12-month period that were then compared with their academic records. Results suggest that students from different entry pathways can succeed at university provided they are supported and encouraged.

Objective: To develop an instrument to study family-centred care (FCC) in traditional open bay Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). Methods: The development process involved constructing instrument's items, establishing content validity by an expert panel and testing the instrument for validity and reliability with a convenience sample of 25 parents and 29 nurses from 6 Jordanian NICUs. The tool covered FCC concepts of respect and dignity, information sharing, participation, and collaboration. Results: Both forms have satisfactory content, discriminant and construct validity. Cronbach's alpha was 0.91 for the parents' form and 0.93 for the nurses' form. While there was variation in parents' and nurses' perspectives on some aspects of FCC, the overall perspective of parents in the current study did not reflect a good application of FCC. Conclusion: This study led to the development of a validated instrument for face and content validity, construct (discriminant and convergent) validity and reliability.

Aim: To explore the International Network for Child and Family Centred Care (INCFCC) members' experiences and views on the long‐term impact of COVID‐19 on the nursing workforce. Background: On the 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID‐19 a global pandemic. While some countries adopted a herd immunity approach, others imposed stricter measures to reduce the transmission of the virus. Hospitals in some countries faced an avalanche of extremely sick admissions, whereas others experienced an early surge in cases or were able to control the spread. Design: Discursive paper. Methods: A web‐based survey was e‐mailed to 63 INCFCC members from 28 March to 30 April 2022, as an invitation to share their experience concerning the long‐term impact of COVID‐19 on their role as a nurse educator, clinician or researcher. Results: Sixteen members responded, and the responses were grouped under the themes stress and anxiety, safe staffing and pay, doing things differently, impact on research, impact on teaching and learning, impact on clinical practice, nursing made visible and lessons for the future. Conclusion: The INCFCC members provided their views and highlighted the impact on their role in nursing education, administration, research and/or practice. This discussion of international perspectives on the similarities and differences imposed by COVID‐19 found that the impact was wide‐ranging and prolonged. The overarching theme revealed the resilience of the participating members in the face of COVID‐19. Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study highlights the importance of all areas of nursing, be it in academia or in clinical practice, to work together to learn from the present and to plan for the future. Future work should focus on supporting organizational and personal resiliency and effective interventions to support the nursing workforce both during a disaster and in the recovery phase. International studies have revealed variable levels of knowledge and attitudes among teachers regarding attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study investigated Jordanian teachers' ADHD knowledge and their attitudes towards children with this condition. A standardised self-report questionnaire was completed by a convenience sample of 130 teachers recruited from 13 primary schools in Zarqa city, Jordan. Findings revealed a gap in teachers' knowledge that extended across all aspects of ADHD causes and management. Teachers' attitude towards children with ADHD was also lower than expected, where many misconceptions about the causes and management of ADHD have emerged. The lack of pre-service teachers' training on ADHD, the dearth of studies on the condition, and the almost absent formal and informal support of children with ADHD have contributed to these results. The findings stress the need for implementing special programmes targeting school teachers and reforming pre-service teachers' training to meet the needs of children with ADHD.

Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to assess the perceived caregiver burden among parents of chronically ill children in Jordan. Background: Although there are few studies on the accurate prevalence of chronic diseases among Jordanian children, there are a few on the burden of caregiving, which is important because most children with chronic illness rely on their caregivers to perform their daily tasks. In Jordan, little is known about the caregiver burden associated with caring for children with chronic diseases. Design: A cross‐sectional design was reported in line with the STROBE guidelines. Methods: The Katz Index of Independence was used to determine the children's level of dependence, and the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers was used to measure the caregivers' level of burden. Results: Nearly, 49.3% of caregivers had a very severe burden, 31.2% of children had a severe functional impairment, 19.6% had a moderate impairment, and 49.3% had full functionality. Based on their children's dependency, caregivers' subjective burden varied greatly (p <.001). Fully functional children had a far lower disease burden than severely and moderately disabled children (p <.001). The caregiver burden score differed significantly across chronic disease categories (p <.001). Unemployed caregivers had a far higher subjective burden than working caregivers (p =.009), and single (divorced/widowed) caregivers had higher burdens than married caregivers. Conclusions: Various factors can increase caregiver burden. Therefore, healthcare providers must plan holistic and family‐centred interventions to reduce the caregiving burden. The COVID-19 pandemic created new challenges for children including access to education and limiting social and emotional connections to extended family, friends, and the community. Globally, opportunities for sharing children's self-reported experiences during lockdown were limited. The primary aim of this project was to create an art-eBook that reflects children's experiences of life during the COVID-19 pandemic that could be shared with other children around the world. Secondly, we wanted to reflect on the consultation undertaken within the International Network of Child and Family Centered Care (INCFCC) using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle framework. Children from around the world were invited to submit a piece of artwork that reflected their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic via a Qualtrics-survey in May 2020. The children's artwork and written pieces were transcribed verbatim into an eBook and the artwork was further placed into groups based on similarity of meaning. Fifty-five children from 17 countries submitted an artwork piece. Four groups were evident within the children's artwork including infection control measures, positive experiences and emotions (connection to family, fun activities), negative experiences and emotions (social impact, emotional impact), and uniting children globally. The eBook illustrates how children of all ages can provide meaningful insightful commentary and valuable information on their experiences during an unprecedented pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is the position of the International Network for Child and Family Centered Care (INCFCC) that COVID19 restrictions pose tremendous challenges for the health care team in their efforts to provide child and family centered care (CFCC). COVID-19 restrictions impact on the family's right to be presernt with their ill child and to contribute to the caring process. A limited number of articles have discussed challenges about the successful delivery of CFCC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on current literature, the INCFCC stresses the need for continuous facilitation implementation of child and family centred care as, it is essential for children's physical and psychological wellbeing. Background and Purpose: Researchers studied the needs of family members using different tools particularly the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (CCFNI). The purpose of current study was to validate the Arabic version of the CCFNI. Methods: A jury of experts helped establish content validity of best translated version. Live testing of the revised instrument with a sample of nurses and family members helped ensure its validity and internal consistency reliability. Results: The Content Validity Index indicated an acceptable relevancy and clarity of the translated version. After introducing diacritic to wordings, clarity and readability were ensured by a pilot test with a sample of 22 critical care nurses and 21 family members. Live testing the instrument asserted its discriminant validity where family members (n = 227) ranked total needs higher than nurses (n = 217) (t = 124.2 (df = 442), p <.001). Conclusion: After using of diacritics, the new modified Arabic version can be used confidently as a valid and reliable measure of family needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored peoples perspectives of COVID-19 through the narrative of their comments on social media. The study employed a qualitative content analysis of a convenience sample of comments attached to more than 10 COVID-19 posts in two official Facebook pages of both Jordanian and Australian main media in May, 2020. The reactions to each post ranged between 60 and 701 reactions at the time of analysis. Most responses were pessimistic and negative supporting a theory of conspiracy. An important outcome though was the presence of a counter conspiracy voices making some kind of equilibrium. While major recommendations included improving public awareness and attitudes, an important action to ensure equilibrium between negative and positive voices is identifying strategies to improve access to credible and relevant health information. Nurses around the world have described family-centred care (FCC) in various ways. With limited evidence regarding its implementation and with dissent among professionals regarding outcomes that are amorphously defined across age groups, systems and global settings, a group of children's nursing experts from around the world collaborated to seek clarification of the terms, deconstruct the elements in the model and describe empirically a consensus of values toward operationally defining FCC. A modified Delphi method was used drawing on expert opinions of participants from eight countries to develop a contemporary and internationally agreed list of 27 statements (descriptors of FCC) that could form the foundation for a measure for future empirical psychometric study of FCC across settings and countries. Results indicated that even among FCC experts, understandings of FCC differ and that this may account for some of the confusion and conceptual disagreement. Objective: to investigate the prevalence of asthma and the severity of asthma symptoms in Jordanian school children. Methods: a random sample of 2819 students aged 6-18 years was drawn from 10 schools in Zarqa city, Jordan. Parents of children from the selected classes participated by completing the ISAAC questionnaire in relation to their child. Results: the prevalence of wheezing in the past year was 14.8% with 5.9% of parents indicated that their child have asthma or have had asthma. The severity of asthma symptoms was manifested in the high number of attacks, besides the sleep disturbance because of wheezing experienced by most children. Exercise induced asthma was reported by 60.6% of children and 5.9% of parents indicated that their child was diagnosed with asthma. Conclusion: the results suggest a high prevalence of asthma with severe symptoms in Zarqa. A negative impact could result if this trend continues without proper interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to examine non-asthmatic children's acceptance of and attitudes towards their asthmatic peers in Jordan. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2015 and January 2016 among 1,812 non-asthmatic children aged 9-13 years old at 10 schools in Zarqa, Jordan. Arabic versions of the Peers Attitude Towards Children with Asthma scale and the Asthma Knowledge Test for Children were used to assess attitudes towards children with asthma and asthma-related knowledge, respectively. Results: A total of 1,586 children participated in the study (response rate: 87.5%). Of these, 158 (10%) and 399 (25.2%) children reported a family history of asthma or knew at least one person with asthma, respectively. Although 50.3% stated that they would sit next to such children in the classroom, only 34.9% reported that they would be friends with an asthmatic child. However, 73.1% of the non-asthmatic children believed that asthmatic children were not pretending to be ill and 61.4% believed that such children were not ill due to their own carelessness. Female non-asthmatic children (P <0.001), those with a family history of asthma (P = 0.004) and those who knew other individuals with asthma (P <0.001) had significantly more positive attitudes towards and acceptance of their asthmatic peers. In addition, age was significantly related to attitude scores (P <0.001). However, there was no correlation between asthma-related knowledge and the children's attitudes towards peers with asthma (P = 0.611). Conclusion: Previous interactions with asthmatic family members or peers were found to significantly influence non-asthmatic children's attitudes towards their asthmatic peers. Background: Many international studies in the field of neonatal nursing have identified parental stress, coping difficulties, support issues, and various other experiences that are related to the birth of a preterm infant. However, no studies have assessed the interrelated issues of parental stress, social support, satisfaction, and nursing support in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Jordan. Purpose: This study describes the lived experiences, needs in relation to care, and support systems of parents whose neonates were admitted to the NICU. Methods: A qualitative design using a phenomenological approach was used to explore the experiences of Jordanian parents who gave birth to neonates in the NICU setting. Participants were recruited from the NICUs of government, teaching, and private hospitals. Data were collected using semistructured interviews that were conducted with parents in a suitable place. Ten participants were interviewed: eight mothers and two fathers. After interviews were transcribed, the methodology suggested by van Manen (1990) was used to analyze the data. Results: The shock, worry, and anxiety experienced by parents; the influences of NICU admission on the experiences of parents and families; the information and assistance required and received by parents from healthcare professionals; and the emotions and satisfaction of parents were the main themes that emerged from the study to reflect the lived experience of parents of neonates in the NICU. Conclusions/implications for practice: The parents in this study were satisfied with the healthcare process in the NICUs, even when this care did not fulfill their expectations or needs for their infants. Nurses in the NICUs must develop interventions and strategies that minimize the stress experienced by parents and that support the emotional capacity of parents to deal with this stressful situation. This study explored perspectives of adult Arabs who followed health blogs and offered comments or opinions on four health research findings published by a major broadcaster in the Middle East. Thematic analysis of 67 active Arabic comments/posts revealed both positive and negative attitudes toward these research studies. Themes such as “Islam encourages science” and “Conspiracy theory” have emerged. Negative attitudes based on a culture of conspiracy can be an explanation to the poor compliance seen in the Arab world. Future recommendations are provided where it is suggested that posted comments constitute a sufficient baseline for understanding the public’s opinion and should increase researchers’ confidence in relying on them as a valuable source of data.
