Vaccination provides the best protection against the increasing infections of SARS-CoV-2. The magnitude and type of anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine side effects (SEs) depend on parameters that are not fully understood. In this cross-sectional study, the associations between different anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine SEs and age, sex, the presence of chronic diseases, medication intake, history of allergies, and infections with SARS-CoV-2 were investigated. Our survey used the Google platform and had 866 participants, contacted through e-mails, social media and chain referral sampling (margin of error ≈ 4.38%, 99% confidence). More than 99% of the participants received the BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1-S vaccines. Being female, having chronic diseases, taking medicines routinely and the presence of a SARS-CoV-2 infection (p < 0.05) were associated with strong SEs after the BNT162b2 vaccine second dose. Having a history of allergies and a female sex (p < 0.01) were associated with strong SEs after the ChAdOx1-S vaccine second dose. Furthermore, the results reveal, for the first time, the associations between having a history of allergies, chronic diseases, medication usage, and SEs of a strong magnitude for the BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1-S vaccines. Additionally, this study supports the association of the female sex and infection with SARS-CoV-2 with an increased potential of developing stronger SEs with certain anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. A field experiment was concluded in the 2022 spring season.in field of Al-Khader district, 30 km south of Al-Muthanna Governorate, to evaluate the impact of the productivity of sunflower to fractionation (30 kg Ha-1 ) of humic acids at three levels (one batch, two batches, three batches) and spraying with an extract Azolla at four concentrations (0, 20%, 40% and 60%), A randomized complete block design was used for the experiment with three replications and by split-plot method by placing humic acid fractionation levels in a main plots, spraying Azolla concentrations in the secondary plots. The study found that level of fragmentation was superior in two batches in 1000 seeds weight, the individual yield of the plant and the total seed yield with averages of (84.85 gm and 98.31 gm plant-1 and 5.24 tons ha1 ) for the traits in sequence, while the level of fragmentation was superior by three batches in the diameter of the disc and the number of seeds Filled with two averages of (22.75 cm and 961.25 seeds disc-1 ) for the two traits, respectively, spraying Azolla extract at a concentration of 40% was significantly better and generated the greatest mean of disc diameter, number of filled seeds, 1000 seeds weight, individual plant yield and total seed yield, which amounted to 22.60 cm and 1027.86 seed disc-1, 85.81 gm, 102.75 gm plant-1 and 5.47 tons ha-1 ) for the traits respectively. The interaction between the two research variables was significant because the two together (40% Azolla extract with splitting in three batches) achieved the highest two averages The weight of 1,000 seeds and the total number of seeds reached (1089.30 seeds disc1 and 90.27 g) for the two traits, respectively. Vaccines are crucial in fighting infectious diseases and have been successful in eradicating smallpox and reducing the burden of other infections. However, the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns depends on societal acceptance, and vaccine hesitancy can undermine their impact. Midkine (MK) and pleiotrophin (PTN) belong to the same family of cytokines. They have similar sequences and functions. Both have important roles in cellular proliferation, tumors, and diseases. They regulate and are expressed by some immune cells. We have recently demonstrated MK production by some human innate antigen-presenting cells (iAPCs), i.e., monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MDDCs) and macrophages stimulated through Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4, and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) stimulated through TLR 7. While PTN production was only documented in tissue macrophages. TLRs 3, 7, 8, and 9 are nucleic acid sensing (NAS) TLRs that detect nucleic acids from cell damage and infection and induce iAPC responses. We investigated whether NAS TLRs can induce MK and PTN production by human iAPCs, namely monocytes, macrophages, MDDCs, myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs), and pDCs. Our results demonstrated for the first time that PTN is produced by all iAPCs upon TLR triggering (p < 0.01). IAPCs produced more PTN than MK (p < 0.01). NAS TLRs and iAPCs had differential abilities to induce the production of MK, which was induced in monocytes and pDCs by all NAS TLRs (p < 0.05) and in MDDCs by TLRs 7/8 (p < 0.05). TLR4 induced a stronger MK production than NAS TLRs (p ≤ 0.05). Monocytes produced higher levels of PTN after differentiation to macrophages and MDDCs (p < 0.05). The production of MK and PTN differs among iAPCs, with a higher production of PTN and a selective induction of MK production by NAS TLR. This highlights the potentially important role of iAPCs in angiogenesis, tumors, infections, and autoimmunity through the differential production of MK and PTN upon TLR triggering. Objectives: Identification of the high risk alleles, genotypes and haplotypes of the human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in different populations is beneficial for understanding their roles in type 1 diabetes (T1D) pathogenesis and intervention practices. This study aimed to identify T1D-associated HLA gene alleles in the Omani population. Methods: The present case-control study included 73 diabetic seropositive children (mean age 9.08 ± 3.27 years) attending the paediatric clinic at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Muscat, Oman, and 110 healthy controls. HLA--A, -B, -C, -DRB1 and -DQB1 genes were genotyped using a sequence-specific primer polymerase chain reaction (SSP-PCR). Results: Two HLA class I alleles (B*08, B*58) and three class II alleles (DQB1*02, DRB1*03 and DRB1*04) were associated with T1D susceptibility, while one class I (B*51) and three class II (DQB1*05, DQB1*06 and DRB1*16) alleles were associated with T1D protection. HLA-DRB1*03 and DQB1*02 alleles showed the strongest risk association among all alleles. Six DRB1 residues (E9, S11, S13, Y30, V70 and K71) were significantly associated with T1D susceptibility. Heterozygous genotypes, HLA-DRB1*03/*04 and DQB1*02/*03 were significantly associated with T1D susceptibility (P <0.0001, odds ratio [OR] = 63.21 and P = 0.02, OR = 3.63, respectively). Furthermore, a significant combined action of DRB1*03-DQB1*02 haplotype in T1D risk (P = 0.000176, OR = 15) and DRB1*16-DQB1*05 haplotype in protection (P = 0.0312, OR = 0.48) was detected. The cytokine midkine (MK) is a growth factor that is involved in different physiological processes including tissue repair, inflammation, the development of different types of cancer and the proliferation of endothelial cells. The production of MK by primary human macrophages and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MDDCs) was never described. We investigated whether MK is produced by primary human monocytes, macrophages and MDDCs and the capacity of macrophages and MDDCs to modulate the proliferation of endothelial cells through MK production. The TLR stimulation of human monocytes, macrophages and MDDCs induced an average of ≈200-fold increase in MK mRNA and the production of an average of 78.2, 62, 179 pg/ml MK by monocytes, macrophages and MDDCs respectively (p < 0.05). MK production was supported by its detection in CD11c+ cells, CLEC4C+ cells and CD68+ cells in biopsies of human tonsils showing reactive lymphoid follicular hyperplasia. JSH-23, which selectively inhibits NF-κB activity, decreased the TLR-induced production of MK in PMBCs, macrophages and MDDCs compared to the control (p < 0.05). The inhibition of MK production by macrophages and MDDCs using anti-MK siRNA decreased the capacity of their supernatants to stimulate the proliferation of endothelial cells (p = 0.01 and 0.04 respectively). This is the first study demonstrating that the cytokine MK is produced by primary human macrophages and MDDCs upon TLR triggering, and that these cells can stimulate endothelial cell proliferation through MK production. Our results also suggest that NF-κB plays a potential role in the production of MK in macrophages and MDDCs upon TLR stimulation. The production of MK by macrophages and MDDCs and the fact that these cells can enhance the proliferation of endothelial cells by producing MK are novel immunological phenomena that have potentially important therapeutic implications. A field experiment was carried out during the spring season of 2022 at a farm in the Al- Khader district 30 km south of Samawah. The experiment was conducted to study the role of fractionation (30 kg H-1) of humic acids for three batches (First batch, Second batch and Third batch) and spraying with Azolla extract using four concentrations ( 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%), on the vegetative growth indicators of sunflower. The treatments were arranged as a split-plot design with two plots, the fractionation (30 kg H-1) (Al-Mughayer, 2019) of humic acids in the main plot and Azolla spray concentrations in the second plot, using three replications .The results showed a superiority in the second batch for the percentage of nitrogen in the leaves with an average of (1.27%) and did not show significant differences in the plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area and stem diameter. Foliage and stem diameter were (34.06 leaves -1, 9514 cm2 one plant and 28.14 mm) for the characteristics, respectively, while the spraying concentration of 60% was superior in the percentage of nitrogen in the leaves with an average of (1.25%). The interaction between the study factors was high significantly, as was (40% Azolla extract at the second batch) the highest average of nitrogen content in the leaves, which was up to (1.30%). Background: Interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) is produced by and impacts different cell types in human. IL‐6 is associated with different diseases and viral infections, including COVID‐19. To our knowledge, no normal values were reported for IL‐6 in the blood of healthy individuals. We have reviewed and performed a meta‐analysis on a total of 140 studies, including 12,421 values for IL‐6 in the blood of healthy adult donors. Among these studies, 83 did not report a mean value and the standard deviation. Therefore, for the statistical analysis, we used the values reported in 57 studies, which included 3166 values for IL‐6. Results: The reported values for IL‐6 in the blood of healthy donors varied between 0 and 43.5 pg/ml. The pooled estimate of IL‐6 was 5.186 pg/ml (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.631, 5.740). As the age increased by 1 year, IL‐6 values increased by 0.05 pg/ml (95% CI: 0.02, 0.09; p <.01). Though the heterogenicity, as determined by I2 statistics, was high in our study, the differences in IL‐6 values are still at the level of a few pg/ml, which might be related to the differences in the conditions that influence IL‐6 production in the healthy population. Conclusions: This is the first meta‐analysis reporting the levels of IL‐6 in the blood of healthy donors based on a large number of studies and donors. Therefore the 95% CI values determined in our study could well serve as a reference range for quick decision‐making in clinical interventions, particularly those aiming to inhibit IL‐6, especially urgent interventions, for example, COVID‐19. The process of wound healing is highly complex, and any changes of the key healing factors or components can produce undesirable outcomes. Current clinical practices such as off-loading, debridement, irrigation, suturing, negative therapy of pressure, grafting and the supplementation of growth factors and so on, have limits in addressing the problems of comprehensive wound care. Due to the dynamic nature of the healing process, the best prevention strategies possible are effective wound management in the early stages and preventing the development of wounds to chronic conditions. The immune system has been shown to play a vital role in the physiological process of wound healing and tissue repair. Many agents that affect the immune system positively, both synthetic and natural, were shown to have implications for wound healing process. In particular, bioactive materials have shown promising consequences in this area, as a result of advances in inter-disciplinary approaches that can potentially be used as a smart wound care. Natural polysaccharides, with their clearly elucidated structures, identified cellular activities and desirable physical properties have the potential to work as therapeutic tools for tissue regeneration and wound healing. In this review article we discuss briefly the essential role of the immune system and emergence of natural wound healing polysaccharide applications. First, we introduce natural polysaccharides and their biological activities from natural sources. Then, we discuss some natural polysaccharides with growth factor-binding affinities and inspired polymer tools, focusing on how wound-healing and tissue reparation can possibly benefit from these promising polysaccharides. Purpose: The state of knowledge about the effect of sleep deprivation on the immune system is scarce and conflicting. It would therefore be useful to investigate the consequences of sleep deprivation on the immune system. We have studied the effect of sleep deprivation on the changes in neutrophil functions, and the ex vivo proliferative pattern of CD4+ T lymphocytes in relationship with blood cytokine and chemokine levels due to the crucial role of these cells in mounting potent immune responses. Methods: Healthy volunteers were followed for 3 weeks. They had normal sleep in weeks 1 and 3 and they were sleep-deprived on week 2, sleeping < 6 h per 24 h, a pattern similar to sleep behaviors of many chronically sleep-deprived individuals. We assessed the levels of Th1/Th2 and inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, CD4+ T cells, and the NADPH oxidase activation and phagocytic functions in neutrophils. Results: Our results suggest that sleep deprivation leads to a decreased neutrophil capacity to phagocytose bacteria and activate NADPH oxidase (p < 0.05). Sleep deprivation was associated with a potential increase in CXCL9 levels and decrease in CXCL10/CXCL9 and CCL5/CXCL9 ratios (p < 0.05). Furthermore, our results suggest that the decrease in CD4+ T cell due to sleep deprivation was not associated with changes in their proliferation as observed by Ki67 levels, but rather, it correlated with changes in CXCL10/CXCL9 ratio (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Sleep deprivation may lead to a decreased phagocytosis and NADPH oxidase activity in neutrophils and a decrease in the levels of CD4+ T cells which is related to changes in the Th1-related chemokine balance. Traditional medicine is still widely practiced in many countries due to its complexity and long term benefit. Among various medicinal plants found in Dhofar region of Oman, frankincense has a unique position due to its medicinal and economical importance. The gum-resin and essential oil produced by different species, most of these are related to family Burseraceae under the Boswellia genus. The family members of Boswellia are characterized by resin bearing ducts. Among the twenty-nine species of genus Boswellia, (Burseraceae), Boswellia sacra Flueck is known since decades for the extraction of aromatic gums and resins that are burned as incense. Boswellia resin holds about 60-80% alcohol-soluble resin, 15-20% water soluble gum and 5-7 % essential oil, along with polysaccharide fraction and polymeric substances are also present in limited extent. The physicians and nutritionists show interest in frankincense due to the therapeutic potential of its gum resin and essential oil. Essential oil and gum resin of various species of frankincense has been used to make remedies to treat different diseases. Various reports have described the antimicrobial, immuno-modulatory, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, anticancer, anti-asthmatic, antidiarrheal, hypo-lipidemic, anti-diabetic, hepato-protective, and even antiviral effect of different Boswellia species. In this review, we have highlighted the works done so far on the use of Boswellia gum resin and health benefits along with some pilot clinical studies done on the Boswellia gum resin related products. INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of studies comparing the physiological effects of nasal CPAP or non-synchronized noninvasive ventilation (ns-NIV) during the postextubation phase in preterm infants. Heart rate variability (HRV) can identify system instability before clinical or laboratory signs of deterioration. Thus, we sought to investigate any differences in HRV between those modes. METHODS: 15 preterm infants with birthweight ≤1,250 g and undergoing their first extubation attempt were studied immediately after disconnection from mechanical ventilation. Electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings were obtained while on nasal CPAP and ns-NIV in a random order (30-60 min on each). Time and frequency domain analyses were used to calculate HRV from 5-min segments of ECG. RESULTS: 12 of 15 infants were analyzed (3 were excluded for low ECG quality): 7 successes and 5 failures. HRV parameters were higher during ns-NIV when compared to nasal CPAP, but differences were not statistically different. However, absolute and relative differences in HRV values (all time domain parameters) were significantly higher in infants who failed extubation during ns-NIV. CONCLUSIONS: Nasal CPAP or ns-NIV provided immediately postextubation did not affect HRV. Interestingly, in an exploratory analysis, changes in HRV did occur during ns-NIV in the subgroup of infants who failed extubation. Hence, changes in HRV as early as 2 h after extubation should be further explored in larger studies as a potential predictor of postextubation respiratory failure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The failure to establish potent anti-HBV T cell responses suggests the absence of an effective innate immune activation. Kupffer cells and liver-infiltrating monocytes/macrophages have an essential role in establishing anti-HBV responses. These cells express the costimulatory molecules CD80 and CD86. CD80 expression on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) induces Th1 cell differentiation, whereas CD86 expression drives the differentiation towards a Th2 profile. The relative expression of CD80, CD86 and PD-L1 on APCs, regulates T cell activation. Few studies investigated CD80 and CD86 expression on KCs and infiltrating monocytes/macrophages in HBV-infected liver and knowledge about the expression of PD-L1 on these cells is controversial. The expression of these molecules together in CD68+ cells has not been explored in HBV-infected livers. Methods: Double staining immunohistochemistry was applied to liver biopsies of HBV-infected and control donors to explore CD80, CD86 and PD-L1 expression in the lobular and portal areas. Results: Chronic HBV infection was associated with increased CD68+CD86+ cell count and percentage in the lobular areas, and no changes in the count and percentage of CD68+CD80+ and CD68+PD-L1+ cells, compared to the control group. While CD68+CD80+ cell count in portal areas correlated with the fibrosis score, CD68+CD80+ cell percentage in lobular areas correlated with the inflammation grade. Conclusion: The upregulation of CD86 but not CD80 and PD-L1 on CD68+ cells in HBV-infected livers, suggests that these cells do not support the induction of potent Th1. Aim: The lack of potent innate immune responses during HCV infection might lead to a delay in initiating adaptive immune responses. Kupffer cells (KCs) and liver-infiltrating monocytes/macrophages (CD68+ cells) are essential to establish effective anti-HCV responses. They express co-stimulatory molecules, CD80 and CD86. CD86 upregulation induces activator responses that are then potentially regulated by CD80. The relative levels of expression of CD80, CD86 and the inhibitory molecule, PD-L1, on CD68+ cells modulate T cell activation. A few studies have explored CD80 and PD-L1 expression on KCs and infiltrating monocytes/macrophages in HCV-infected livers, and none investigated CD86 expression in these cells. These studies have identified these cells based on morphology only. We investigated the stimulatory/inhibitory profile of CD68+ cells in HCV-infected livers based on the balance of CD80, CD86 and PD-L1 expression. Methods: CD80, CD86 and PD-L1 expression by CD68+ cells in the lobular and portal areas of the liver of chronic HCV-infected (n = 16) and control (n = 14) individuals was investigated using double staining immunohistochemistry. Results: The count of CD68+ KCs in the lobular areas of the HCV-infected livers was lower than that in the control (p = 0.041). The frequencies of CD68+CD80+ cells and CD68+PD-L1+ cells in both lobular and total areas of the liver were higher in HCV-infected patients compared with those in the control group (p = 0.001, 0.031 and 0.007 respectively). Moreover, in the lobular areas of the HCV-infected livers, the frequency of CD68+CD80+ cells was higher than that of CD68+CD86+ and CD68+PD-L1+ cells. In addition, the frequencies of CD68+CD80+ and CD68+CD86+ cells were higher in the lobular areas than the portal areas. Conclusions: Our results show that CD68+ cells have an inhibitory profile in the HCV-infected livers. This might help explain the delayed T cell response and viral persistence during HCV infection. We have investigated whether ‘at risk’ subjects who did not respond serologically during a pre-study vaccination with a commercial egg grown influenza sub-unit vaccine would respond to a subsequent vaccination with either a single dose of MDCK cell grown influenza vaccine or a standard egg grown influenza vaccine containing the same virus strains. We studied 48 non-responder subjects with a mean age 67.5, range: 34–82 years. In this non-responder group the increased immune response that was detected after boosting with an MDCK cell derived vaccine response was variable and relatively modest, except for the A/Texas strain in the vaccine. The proportion of subjects, with an HI titre of ≥40 (protective antibody titre) increased from 50 to 83% (A/Texas strain), from 13 to 25% (B/Harbin strain) and from 38 to 46% (A/Wuhan strain). In comparison a booster vaccination with egg-derived influenza vaccine resulted in an increase immune response with an HI antibody titre ≥40 for two of the three strains, namely from 17 to 58% for the B/Harbin strain and from 8 to 33% for the A/Wuhan strain. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the anti-Staphylococcal activity of honey in combination with bovine milk. MATERIALS & METHODS One sample of Omani honey (OH26) was investigated for its activity against Staphylococcus aureus (NCTC 6571), using an agar well diffusion technique. The honey sample gave excellent anti-Staphylococcal activity. Four different samples of bovine milk (Al Marai, Al Rawabi, A'Sfwa and Sohar) were investigated for their anti-Staphylococcal activity. Two of the milk samples were investigated for their Staphylococcus aureus killing rates, each on its own and in combination with the Omani honey using tube dilution technique. RESULTS Two samples of milk demonstrated moderate anti-Staphylococcal inhibitory activity (zone of inhibition 20mm). OH26 demonstrated excellent anti-Staphylococcal activity (zone of inhibition of 42 mm). OH26 in combination with milk demonstrated enhanced killing activity. At 2 hours, honey demonstrated 50% killing, while the combination of honey with either Al-Marai or Al Rawabi milk demonstrated 66% and 69% killing, respectively. At 6 hours, honey killed 71% while the combination with either milk samples killed >90%. The combination of honey and milk showed better killing rates, enhancing the killing activity by approximately 20%. Honey alone requires more than 20 hours for killing all bacteria, whereas when milk is combined with honey the time for 100% killing is reduced to less than 16 hours. CONCLUSIONS Omani honey possesses in-vitro anti-Staphylococcus aureus activity. Not all milk samples possessed anti-Staphylococcal activity. Objectives: Antiphospholipid antibodies fluctuate during a healthy normal pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate the levels of both immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies for cardiolipin and β2-glycoprotein (β2GP) among healthy pregnant women., Methods: This study was conducted between May 2010 and December 2012. A total of 75 healthy Omani pregnant women with no history of autoimmune disease were investigated during their pregnancy and 90 days after delivery at the Armed Forces Hospital in Muscat, Oman. A control group of 75 healthy Omani non-pregnant women were also investigated as a comparison. Levels of IgM and IgG antibodies for both anti-cardiolipin antibodies (ACAs) and β2GP were measured using a standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay., Results: The ACA IgM levels were significantly higher in the control group compared to the pregnant women (P <0.001). No significant differences were observed in the ACA IgM levels between the control group and the pregnant women after delivery. In contrast, ACA IgG levels were significantly higher during pregnancy and after delivery compared with those of the healthy control group (P = 0.007 and 0.002, respectively). The levels of β2GP IgG were significantly higher during pregnancy than after delivery and in the control group (P = 0.001 and <0.001, respectively)., Conclusion: In this study, ACA IgG levels increased during healthy pregnancies and after normal deliveries whereas β2GP IgG levels increased transiently during the pregnancies. Both phenomena were found to be significantly associated with a transient decline in the levels of IgM specific for these antigens. Therefore, the levels of these antibodies may be regulated during a healthy pregnancy.

Polymorphisms in the regulatory region of the CCR5 gene affect protein expression and modulate the progress of HIV-1 disease. Because of this prominent role, variations in this gene have been under differential pressure and their frequencies vary among human populations. The CCR2V64I mutation is tightly linked to certain polymorphisms in the CCR5 gene. The current Omani population is genetically diverse, a reflection of their history as traders who ruled extensive regions around the Indian Ocean. In this study, we examined the CCR2-CCR5 haplotypes in Omanis and compared the patterns of genetic diversity with those of other populations. Blood samples were collected from 115 Omani adults and genomic DNA was screened to identify the polymorphic sites in the CCR5 gene and the CCR2V64I mutation. Four minor alleles were common: CCR5-2554T and CCR5-2086G showed frequencies of 49% and 46%, respectively, whereas CCR5-2459A and CCR5-2135C both had a frequency of 36%. These alleles showed moderate levels of heterozygosity, indicating that they were under balancing selection. However, the well-known allele CCR5Δ32 was relatively rare. Eleven haplotypes were identified, four of which were common: HHC (46%), HHE (20%), HHA (14%) and HHF*2 (12%).

Objectives: Most of the morbidity and mortality in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) result from opportunistic infections (OIs). Although the spectrum of OIs in HIV infected patients from developing countries has been reported, there is a paucity of data on the natural history, pattern of disease, and survival of hospitalised patients with HIV/AIDS, particularly in Arab countries. The aim of this study was to study retrospectively the spectrum and frequency of various OIs in a cohort of hospitalised HIV-infected Omani patients., Methods: Included in the study were 77 HIV-infected Omani patients admitted to a tertiary care teaching hospital in Muscat, Oman, between January 1999 and December 2008. They were diagnosed on their first admission and hence were not on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) at presentation. The frequency of various clinical and laboratory findings and individual OIs were analysed., Results: In total, 45 patients (58%) had one or more AIDS-defining OIs. Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) was commonest (25%), followed by cryptococcal meningitis (22%), cytomegalovirus (CMV), retinitis (17%), disseminated tuberculosis (15%), and cerebral toxoplasmosis (12.5%). Only one patient with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare (MAI) was identified and one patient had disseminated visceral leishmaniasis. The majority of patients (77%) had CD4+ counts <200 cells/μL. Ten patients (22%) died during hospital stays, with five deaths (50%) being caused by disseminated CMV infection., Conclusion: A wide spectrum of OIs is seen in hospitalised HIV-infected patients in Oman. P. jiroveci pneumonia and cryptococcal meningitis were the commonest OIs, while disseminated CMV was the commonest cause of death. We hope these results will advance the knowledge of specialists treating HIV in Oman and the Gulf region.

Objective: To investigate retrospectively the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 and 2 among pregnant women during a 10-year period., Methods: The total number of pregnant women attending the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH), Muscat, Oman between January 1995 and December 2005 was 11553 women. Their age range was 16-45 years (average of 28.67.6 years). The women were tested for HIV-1 and 2 using the standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Positive samples were further tested by Western Blot. The data were statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 10.0., Results: By ELISA testing, 21 women were positive for HIV-1 (prevalence rate: 0.2%) and 3 women were weakly positive for HIV-1 (24 women; 0.2% prevalence rate). However, 15 women were confirmed HIV-1 positive using the Western Blot method (prevalence rate: 0.13%) with an average of 1.5 positive women per year. None of the women were found positive for HIV-2., Conclusion: This relatively high prevalence of HIV-1 among pregnant women attending SQUH, highlights the need for screening all pregnant women attending different hospitals and antenatal clinics in Oman. This is essential for preventing the transmission of HIV-1 and 2 to the infants and to the community, and for the appropriate medical treatment and counseling of affected women.
