This study was aimed to investigate effect of some growth traits for two varieties of maize (Zea mays L.) to spraying vitamin B9 (folic acid), vitamin E (tocopherol), and arginine acid. A field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences - University of Baghdad, during the fall seasons of 2021 and 2022. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) within split plot arrangement with three replicates was used. The experiment included two factors, the first factor within the main plots represented two varieties of maize (Baghdad 3 and Sarah), while the second factor in the sub-plot represented spraying with vitamin E and B9 at concentrations of 1and 2 g L -1 and arginine acid at concentrations of 100 and 200 mg L -1, in addition to the control treatment (without spraying). The results showed that Sarah variety out performed in most studied traits for both seasons (75% silking, number of days from sowing to physiological maturity, dry weight, plant growth rate . physiological maturity, and leaves chlorophyll content.The growth characteristics were affected by spraying vitamin E, as the concentration exceeded 2 g L-1 in most traits, as the highest means were gave for 75% of silking (61.33 and 63.67 day), dry weight (387 and 425.3 g plant-1 ),and plant growth rate at physiological maturity (3.66 and 3.95 g plant-1 day-1 ) Leaf chlorophyll content (42.98 and 42.84 mg g-1 fresh weight) for both seasons. A general method has been developed to solve the Schrödinger equation for an arbitrary derivative of the δ -function potential in 1-d using cutoff regularization. The work treats both the relativistic and nonrelativistic cases. A distinction in the treatment has been made between the case when the derivative n is an even number from the one when n is an odd number. A general gap equation for each case has been derived. The case of δ (2) -function potential has been used as an example. The results from the relativistic case show that the δ (2) -function system behaves exactly like the δ -function and the δ ′ -function potentials, which means it also shares the same features with quantum field theories, like being asymptotically free, in the massless limit, it undergoes dimensional transmutation and it possesses an infrared conformal fixed point. The objectives of this study were to evaluate five forage crops (alfalfa (Medicago sativa), barley (Hordeum vulgare), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and wheat (Triticum aestivum)) for green fodder production and water use efficiency under hydroponic conditions. The experiment has been conducted under temperature-controlled conditions (24 ± 1°C) and natural window illumination at growth room of Soilless Culture Laboratory, Arabian Gulf University, Manama, Bahrain. The results showed that green forage can be produced in 8 days from planting to harvest using hydroponic technique. Highest values for green fresh yields were recorded for the crops cowpea, barley, and alfalfa which gave 217, 200, and 194 tons/ha, respectively. However, only cowpea and barley crops gave the highest green dry yield, but not alfalfa. Barely crop used water more efficiently than the other four tested crops when produced about 654 kg fresh matter/m3 water in comparison to 633, 585, 552, and 521 kg fresh matter/m³ water for cowpea, sorghum, wheat, and alfalfa, respectively. No significant differences between barley and cowpea for water use efficiency were noted. It can be concluded from this study that barley crop can be considered the best choice for production of hydroponic green fodder with less water consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background:Total gastrointestinal transit times (GITT) and segmental colonic transit times (CTT) are commonly used to describe bowel function in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI).Study design:Reproducibility study.Objectives:To describe inter- and intrasubjective as well as interobserver variations in GITT and segmental CTT in patients with SCI. Furthermore, to study associations between GITT or segmental CTT and colorectal symptoms.Setting:Spinal Cord Unit, Viborg Hospital, Denmark.Methods:Thirty SCI patients took 10 radio-opaque markers on 6 consecutive days and an abdominal X-ray was taken on day 7. The same procedure was repeated after 3 months. GITT and CTT were computed from the number of markers in the entire colorectum and in the left and the right colon. Intra- and interobserver variations were described as dispersion (numerical difference/mean).Results:Intersubjective variation was large for GITT (range: 0.6–6.3 days), right CTT (range: 0.1–5.5 days) and left CTT (range: 0–4.9 days). Intrasubjective variation was acceptable for GITT (dispersion: 0.28) but less good for right (dispersion: 0.63) and left CTT (dispersion: 0.68). Interobserver variation was very small. Purpose: Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) represents the persistent absence of sperm in ejaculate without obstruction, stemming from diverse disease processes. This survey explores global practices in NOA diagnosis, comparing them with guidelines and offering expert recommendations., Materials and Methods: A 56-item questionnaire survey on NOA diagnosis and management was conducted globally from July to September 2022. This paper focuses on part 1, evaluating NOA diagnosis. Data from 367 participants across 49 countries were analyzed descriptively, with a Delphi process used for expert recommendations., Results: Of 336 eligible responses, most participants were experienced attending physicians (70.93%). To diagnose azoospermia definitively, 81.7% requested two semen samples. Commonly ordered hormone tests included serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (97.0%), total testosterone (92.9%), and luteinizing hormone (86.9%). Genetic testing was requested by 66.6%, with karyotype analysis (86.2%) and Y chromosome microdeletions (88.3%) prevalent. Diagnostic testicular biopsy, distinguishing obstructive azoospermia (OA) from NOA, was not performed by 45.1%, while 34.6% did it selectively. Differentiation relied on physical examination (76.1%), serum hormone profiles (69.6%), and semen tests (68.1%). Expectations of finding sperm surgically were higher in men with normal FSH, larger testes, and a history of sperm in ejaculate., Conclusions: This expert survey, encompassing 367 participants from 49 countries, unveils congruence with recommended guidelines in NOA diagnosis. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected healthcare systems worldwide, with mandatory quarantine and isolation measures being implemented to curb the spread of the virus. These measures have potentially led to delayed or complicated presentations of non-COVID-19 cases, including pediatric surgical cases. This study aims to evaluate pediatric surgical admission patterns, analyze the incidence of surgical diagnoses, and assess the severity of presentation during the COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 period. This retrospective observational study was conducted at a university hospital in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia to assess the effect of the pandemic on pediatric surgery admissions patterns and severity of presentation during the COVID-19 period (March 2, 2020, to March 1, 2022) and pre-COVID-19 period (March 1, 2018, to March 1, 2020). Of the 903 pediatric surgical admissions, 366 (40.5%) presented during the COVID-19 period. The admission rate per month decreased by 6.9 during COVID-19 compared to pre-COVID-19 (mean [SD]: 21.5 [9.3] vs. 14.6 [8.2], p = 0.01). The most common admission diagnoses were appendicitis (17.5%) and inguinal hernia (15.8%). There was a 15% increase in the percentage of emergency admissions (54.4% vs. 47.3%, p = 0.037) during COVID-19 compared to pre-COVID-19. Of note, the percentage of patients admitted with acute appendicitis increased by 35.9% (20.8% vs. 15.3%, p = 0.03). Furthermore, the emergency admissions for patients with inguinal hernia doubled (26.6% vs. 12.7%, p = 0.035). No significant difference in ICU admissions, hospital length of stay, and routine discharge were observed. In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic correlated with a significant decrease in overall admissions and an increase in emergency admissions, including those for appendicitis and inguinal hernia. The increase in complicated conditions was not significant. There was no significant difference in ICU admissions and hospital length of stay. A novel resonance-assisted self-doping mechanism has been demonstrated in ladder-type oligoaniline-derived organic conductors. The new class of compounds has a unique structure incorporating acidic phenolic hydroxyl groups into the ladder-type cyclohexadiene-1,4-diimine core, enabling efficient resonance-assisted proton transfer and electronic doping without the need for external dopants. Mechanistic and computational studies confirm the open-shell, zwitterionic nature of the self-doped state and the significant role played by the dielectric environment. This new self-doping mechanism allows for higher stability and durability in the material's electronic performance. The photocatalytic generation of H 2 using covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is gaining more interest. While numerous reports have focused on the production of H 2 from deionized water using COFs, the inability to produce H 2 from industrial wastewater or seawater is a common limitation in many reported catalysts. Additionally, many of these reports lack a clear path to scale up the catalyst synthesis. In this study, we explore the prospect of hybridizing a COF with gC 3 N 4 to create a robust photocatalyst for efficient H 2 generation. This hybrid exhibits outstanding performance not only in deionized water, but also in wastewater, and simulated seawater. Furthermore, we explore the feasibility of the bulk-scale synthesis and successfully produce a 20 g hybrid catalyst in a single batch, and the synthesis method is scalable to achieve the commercial target. Remarkably, a maximum HER rate of 94 873 μmol g -1 h -1 and 109 125 μmol g -1 h -1 was obtained for the hybrid catalyst from industrial wastewater and simulated seawater, respectively. The performance of bulk-scale batches closely matches that of the small-scale ones. Purpose: This study aimed to examine current global practices in regenerative therapy (RT) for erectile dysfunction (ED) and to establish expert recommendations for its use, addressing the current lack of solid evidence and standardized guidelines., Materials and Methods: A 39-question survey was developed by senior Global Andrology Forum (GAF) experts to comprehensively cover clinical aspects of RT. This was distributed globally via a secure online Google Form to ED specialists through the GAF website, international professional societies, and social media, the responses were analyzed and presented for frequencies as percentages. Consensus on expert recommendations for RT use was achieved using the Delphi method., Results: Out of 479 respondents from 62 countries, a third reported using RT for ED. The most popular treatment was low-intensity shock wave therapy (54.6%), followed by platelet-rich plasma (24.5%) and their combination (14.7%), with stem cell therapy being the least used (3.7%). The primary indication for RT was the refractory or adverse effects of PDE5 inhibitors, with the best effectiveness reported in middle-aged and mild-to-moderate ED patients. Respondents were confident about its overall safety, with a significant number expressing interest in RT's future use, despite pending guidelines support., Conclusions: This inaugural global survey reveals a growing use of RT in ED treatment, showcasing its diverse clinical applications and potential for future widespread adoption. Purpose: Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is a common, but complex problem, with multiple therapeutic options and a lack of clear guidelines. Hence, there is considerable controversy and marked variation in the management of NOA. This survey evaluates contemporary global practices related to medical and surgical management for patients with NOA., Materials and Methods: A 56-question online survey covering various aspects of the evaluation and management of NOA was sent to specialists around the globe. This paper analyzes the results of the second half of the survey dealing with the management of NOA. Results have been compared to current guidelines, and expert recommendations have been provided using a Delphi process., Results: Participants from 49 countries submitted 336 valid responses. Hormonal therapy for 3 to 6 months was suggested before surgical sperm retrieval (SSR) by 29.6% and 23.6% of participants for normogonadotropic hypogonadism and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism respectively. The SSR rate was reported as 50.0% by 26.0% to 50.0% of participants. Interestingly, 46.0% reported successful SSR in <10% of men with Klinefelter syndrome and 41.3% routinely recommended preimplantation genetic testing. Varicocele repair prior to SSR is recommended by 57.7%. Half of the respondents (57.4%) reported using ultrasound to identify the most vascularized areas in the testis for SSR. One-third proceed directly to microdissection testicular sperm extraction (mTESE) in every case of NOA while others use a staged approach. After a failed conventional TESE, 23.8% wait for 3 months, while 33.1% wait for 6 months before proceeding to mTESE. The cut-off of follicle-stimulating hormone for positive SSR was reported to be 12-19 IU/mL by 22.5% of participants and 20-40 IU/mL by 27.8%, while 31.8% reported no upper limit., Conclusions: This is the largest survey to date on the real-world medical and surgical management of NOA by reproductive experts. Purpose: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to study the impact of varicocele repair in the largest cohort of infertile males with clinical varicocele by including all available studies, with no language restrictions, comparing intra-person conventional semen parameters before and after the repair of varicoceles., Materials and Methods: The meta-analysis was performed according to PRISMA-P and MOOSE guidelines. A systematic search was performed in Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases. Eligible studies were selected according to the PICOS model (Population: infertile male patients with clinical varicocele; Intervention: varicocele repair; Comparison: intra-person before-after varicocele repair; Outcome: conventional semen parameters; Study type: randomized controlled trials [RCTs], observational and case-control studies)., Results: Out of 1,632 screened abstracts, 351 articles (23 RCTs, 292 observational, and 36 case-control studies) were included in the quantitative analysis. Purpose: Sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) is a functional sperm abnormality that can impact reproductive potential, for which four assays have been described in the recently published sixth edition of the WHO laboratory manual for the examination and processing of human semen. The purpose of this study was to examine the global practices related to the use of SDF assays and investigate the barriers and limitations that clinicians face in incorporating these tests into their practice., Materials and Methods: Clinicians managing male infertility were invited to complete an online survey on practices related to SDF diagnostic and treatment approaches. Their responses related to the technical aspects of SDF testing, current professional society guidelines, and the literature were used to generate expert recommendations via the Delphi method. Finally, challenges related to SDF that the clinicians encounter in their daily practice were captured., Results: The survey was completed by 436 reproductive clinicians. Overall, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine triphosphate Nick-End Labeling (TUNEL) is the most commonly used assay chosen by 28.6%, followed by the sperm chromatin structure assay (24.1%), and the sperm chromatin dispersion (19.1%). The choice of the assay was largely influenced by availability (70% of respondents). A threshold of 30% was the most selected cut-off value for elevated SDF by 33.7% of clinicians. Of respondents, 53.6% recommend SDF testing after 3 to 5 days of abstinence. Although 75.3% believe SDF testing can provide an explanation for many unknown causes of infertility, the main limiting factors selected by respondents are a lack of professional society guideline recommendations (62.7%) and an absence of globally accepted references for SDF interpretation (50.3%)., Conclusions: This study represents the largest global survey on the technical aspects of SDF testing as well as the barriers encountered by clinicians. Artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine has gained a lot of momentum in the last decades and has been applied to various fields of medicine. Advances in computer science, medical informatics, robotics, and the need for personalized medicine have facilitated the role of AI in modern healthcare. Similarly, as in other fields, AI applications, such as machine learning, artificial neural networks, and deep learning, have shown great potential in andrology and reproductive medicine. AI-based tools are poised to become valuable assets with abilities to support and aid in diagnosing and treating male infertility, and in improving the accuracy of patient care. These automated, AI-based predictions may offer consistency and efficiency in terms of time and cost in infertility research and clinical management. In andrology and reproductive medicine, AI has been used for objective sperm, oocyte, and embryo selection, prediction of surgical outcomes, cost-effective assessment, development of robotic surgery, and clinical decision-making systems. Menstruating individuals without access to adequate hygiene products often improvise with alternatives that pose health risks and limit their participation in society. We describe here a menstrual hygiene product based on low-cost materials, which are integrated onto fabrics to imbue unidirectional permeability. A body-facing "Janus" fabric top layer comprising ZnO tetrapods spray-coated onto polyester mosquito netting imparts hierarchical texturation, augmenting the micron-scale texturation derived from the weave of the underlying fabric. The asymmetric coating establishes a gradient in wettability, which underpins flash spreading and unidirectional permeability. The hygiene product accommodates a variety of absorptive media, which are sandwiched between the Janus layer and a second outward-facing coated densely woven fabric. An assembled prototype demonstrates outstanding ability to wick saline solutions and a menstrual fluid simulant while outperforming a variety of commercially alternatives. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has become widely utilized in different specialities including facelift surgery. The aim of this review was to robustly evaluate the quality of available evidence on the efficacy and safety of TXA use in facelift surgery. We searched the MEDLINE (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD), Embase (Elsevier, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), CINAHL (EBSCO Information Services, Ipswich, MA), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; Wiley, Hoboken, NJ), Google Scholar (Alphabet Inc. Mountain View, CA), Science Citation Index (Clarivate, London, UK), and Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (LILACS; São Paulo, Brazil) databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies. Primary outcomes were blood loss, postoperative hematoma, ecchymosis, and swelling, in addition to technical considerations and complications. We assessed review quality with the AMSTAR 2 tool, study quality with Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations approach (GRADE) tool, and the risk of bias with Cochrane's RoB 2.0 tool for RCTs and ROBINS-I for nonrandomized studies. Of the 368 articles, a total of 3 studies including 150 patients met the inclusion criteria. The RCT reported a significant reduction in postoperative serosanguineous collections in the TXA group (P < .01), and in surgeon-rated postoperative ecchymosis and bruising. The prospective cohort study reported reduced drainage output in first 24 hours in the TXA group (P < .01). The retrospective cohort study reported lower intraoperative blood loss, mean postoperative day 1 drain output, percentage of drain removal on postoperative day 1, and number of days to drain removal in the TXA group (all P < .01). The quality of studies was moderate, and this review was the highest rated compared to previous reviews, as per the AMSTAR 2 tool. Based on limited literature, TXA improves clinical outcomes regardless of the route of administration. Topical TXA is an emerging route, expediting drain removal and reducing blood loss. We investigate the charge-generation processes limiting the performance of low-offset organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells by studying a series of newly synthesized PBDB-T-derivative donor polymers whose ionisation energy (IE) is tuned via functional group (difluorination or cyanation) and backbone (thiophene or selenophene bridge) modifications. When blended with the acceptor Y6, the series present heterojunction donor-acceptor IE offsets ( ΔE IE ) ranging from 0.22 to 0.59 eV. As expected, small ΔE IE decrease nonradiative voltage losses but severely suppresses photocurrent generation. We explore the origin of this reduced charge-generation efficiency at low ΔE IE through a combination of opto-electronic and spectroscopic measurements and molecular and device-level modeling. We find that, in addition to the expected decrease in local exciton dissociation efficiency, reducing ΔE IE also strongly reduces the charge transfer (CT) state dissociation efficiency, demonstrating that poor CT-state dissociation can limit the performance of low-offset heterojunction solar cells., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. Purpose: Sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) testing was recently added to the sixth edition of the World Health Organization laboratory manual for the examination and processing of human semen. Many conditions and risk factors have been associated with elevated SDF; therefore, it is important to identify the population of infertile men who might benefit from this test. The purpose of this study was to investigate global practices related to indications for SDF testing, compare the relevant professional society guideline recommendations, and provide expert recommendations., Materials and Methods: Clinicians managing male infertility were invited to take part in a global online survey on SDF clinical practices. This was conducted following the CHERRIES checklist criteria. The responses were compared to professional society guideline recommendations related to SDF and the appropriate available evidence. Expert recommendations on indications for SDF testing were then formulated, and the Delphi method was used to reach consensus., Results: The survey was completed by 436 experts from 55 countries. Almost 75% of respondents test for SDF in all or some men with unexplained or idiopathic infertility, 39% order it routinely in the work-up of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), and 62.2% investigate SDF in smokers. While 47% of reproductive urologists test SDF to support the decision for varicocele repair surgery when conventional semen parameters are normal, significantly fewer general urologists (23%; p=0.008) do the same. Nearly 70% would assess SDF before assisted reproductive technologies (ART), either always or for certain conditions. Recurrent ART failure is a common indication for SDF testing. Very few society recommendations were found regarding SDF testing., Conclusions: This article presents the largest global survey on the indications for SDF testing in infertile men, and demonstrates diverse practices. The synthesis and characterization of asymmetric alkoxy- are reported, fluoro-benzothiadiazole (BT) acceptor core derivatized with a series of six different heterocycles (selenophene, thiophene, furan, 5-thiazole, 2-thiazole and 2-oxazole). The effect of the flanked-heterocycles containing different chalcogen atoms of the six homopolymers (HPX) is studied using optical, thermal, electrochemical, and computational analysis. Computational calculations indicate a strong relationship between the most stable conformation for each homopolymer and their bearing heterocycle, thus homopolymers HPSe', HPTp', HPFu', and HPTzC5, adopted the syn-syn and syn-anti conformations due to their noncovalent interactions with shorter distances, while HPTzC2' and HPOx' demonstrate preference for the anti-anti conformation. Optical property studies of the homopolymers reveal a strong red-shift in solution and film upon exchanging the chalcogen atom from Oxygen < Sulfur < Selenium in HPFu, HPTp, and HPSe, respectively. In addition, deeper highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels are observed when the donor-acceptor moieties (HPSe, HPTp, and HPFu) are substituted for the acceptor-acceptor systems such as HPTzC5, HPTzC2, and HPOx. Improved packing and morphology are exhibited for the donor-acceptor homopolymers. Thus, having a flanked heterocycle containing different chalcogen-atoms in polymeric systems is one way of tuning the physicochemical properties of conjugated materials for optoelectronic applications., (© 2022 The Authors. Background and Aims: Androgenic-anabolic steroid (AAS) abuse is a global health concern, studies revealing an increasing trend of abuse and deleterious effects on reproductive health. Unfortunately, there is no consensus about management pathways due to the lack of specific guidelines., Methods: A prospective study, multicentre, online survey, composed of 30 questions, was conducted to investigate the current trend of AAS abuse and the management followed by practitioners from different specialities dealing with this condition., Results: A total of 151 respondents were included. The majority were general urologists (68.21%), andrologists (22.51%), and endocrinologists (9.28%). An increasing trend of AAS abuse was noticed by 90.73% of participants mostly in young age populations. Most of AAS abusers were presented with infertility (64.24%) and erectile dysfunction (59.60%), and their investigations showed abnormal semen analysis (77.48%), abnormal hormones (follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, testosterone, and estradiol) (94.70%), and reduction in testicular size (50.33%). Most of respondents expected: the need of long duration for spontaneous recovery (6-12 months), relapse of AAS abuse in one-third of patients, less knowledge about the adverse effects (39.74%), and risk of drug dependence (54.30%). Immediate treatment was the most offered plan of management (44.37%) followed by a waiting spontaneous recovery (32.45%), while the remaining would refer the patients to an either endocrinologist or andrologist. The treating physicians did not follow specific guidelines and most of participants (44.44%) reverted to their personal experience in the management., Conclusions: Our study revealed an increasing trend of AAS abuse, deleterious effects of AAS use on reproductive health, and lack of consensuses among the treating physicians regarding the management of related adverse effects. The synthesis and applications of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) derived poly(olefins) have emerged as an exciting area of great interest in the field of biomaterials science. The major focus of this mini-review is to present recent advances in the synthesis of functional materials using ROMP-derived poly(olefins) utilized for drug release, sensing, and cellular uptake in the past seven years (2015-2022). This review reveals that materials synthesized by ROMP-derived well-defined functional poly(olefins) stand to be highly promising systems for medical as well as biological studies. The energy required to heat, cool, and illuminate buildings continues to increase with growing urbanization, engendering a substantial global carbon footprint for the built environment. Passive modulation of the solar heat gain of buildings through the design of spectrally selective thermochromic fenestration elements holds promise for substantially alleviating energy consumed for climate control and lighting. The binary vanadium(IV) oxide VO 2 manifests a robust metal-insulator transition that brings about a pronounced modulation of its near-infrared transmittance in response to thermal activation. As such, VO 2 nanocrystals are potentially useful as the active elements of transparent thermochromic films and coatings. Practical applications in retrofitting existing buildings requires the design of workflows to embed thermochromic fillers within industrially viable resins. Here, we describe the dispersion of VO 2 nanocrystals within a polyvinyl butyral laminate commonly used in the laminated glass industry as a result of its high optical clarity, toughness, ductility, and strong adhesion to glass. To form high-optical-clarity nanocomposite films, VO 2 nanocrystals are encased in a silica shell and functionalized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, enabling excellent dispersion of the nanocrystals in PVB through the formation of siloxane linkages and miscibility of the methacrylate group with the random copolymer. Encapsulation, functionalization, and dispersion of the core-shell VO 2 @SiO 2 nanocrystals mitigates both Mie scattering and light scattering from refractive index discontinuities. The nanocomposite laminates exhibit a 22.3% modulation of NIR transmittance with the functionalizing moiety engendering a 77% increase of visible light transmittance as compared to unfunctionalized core-shell particles. One of the main assumptions in the design of new conjugated polymer materials for their use in organic electronics is that higher coplanarity leads to greater conjugation along the polymer backbone. Conventionally, a more planar monomer structure induces a larger backbone coplanarity, thus leading to a greater overlap of the carbon π-orbitals and therefore a higher degree of π-electron delocalisation. However, here we present a case that counters the validity of this assumption. Different diselenophene-based polymers were studied where one polymer possesses two selenophene rings fused together to create a more rigid, planar structure. The effects of this greater polymer coplanarity were examined using Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Raman spectra showed a large difference between the vibrational modes of the fused and unfused polymers, indicating very different electronic structures. Resonance Raman spectroscopy confirmed the rigidity of the fused selenophene polymer and also revealed, by studying the excitation profiles of the different bands, the presence of two shorter, uncoupled conjugation pathways. Supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we have demonstrated that the reason for this lack of conjugation is a distortion of the selenophene rings due to the induced planarity, forming a new truncated conjugation pathway through the selenophene β-position and bypassing the beneficial α-position. This effect was studied using DFT in an ample range of derivatives, where substitution of the selenium atom with other heteroatoms still maintained the same unconventional conjugation-planarity relationship, confirming the generality of this phenomenon. Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) abuse is a global health-related concern, as most of the related studies showed increasing trends and deleterious effects, mostly on sexual and fertility health. Unfortunately, there are no consensuses about the management pathways due to the lack of specific guidelines. We aimed to confirm the deleterious effects of AAS abuse, monitor the spontaneous recovery, and demonstrate the effects of treatment regimens on recovery. We enrolled 520 patients with a confirmed history of AAS intake within 1 year of presentation and evaluated their symptoms, hormones levels, and semen every 3 months until 12 months. All patients were monitored for spontaneous recovery in the first 3 months; if they showed no recovery, they were randomized to undergo either continued observation or commence medications. The most common presentation (84%) was a combination of sexual symptoms while some patients (18%) were infertile. Most patients (90%) reported low levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and total testosterone. After the 3-month observation, most patients (89%) started treatment, but some (11%) continued observation only. Treated patients showed faster improvement regarding the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) values, hormone levels, testicular size and semen parameters compared to non-treated patients (p < 0.005). Among the 94 patients who presented with infertility (18%), 61 had oligospermia and 33 had azoospermia. All received treatment, but only 14 (15%) achieved successful pregnancy at 12 months while all azoospermic's patients continued to have infertility at the end of the follow-up period. Ladder-type thiazole-fused S , N -heteroacenes with an extended π-conjugation consisting of six (SN6-Tz) and nine (SN9-Tz) fused aromatic rings have been synthesized and fully characterized. To date, the synthesis of well-defined fused building blocks and polymers of π-conjugated organic compounds based on the thiazole moiety is a considerable synthetic challenge, due to the difficulty in their synthesis. Acceptor-donor building blocks M1 and M2 were successfully polymerized into ladder homopolymers P1-P2 and further copolymerized with a diketopyrrolopyrrole unit to afford step-ladder copolymer P3. The optical, electronic, and thermal properties, in addition to their charge transport behavior in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), were investigated. The results showed an interesting effect on the molecular arrangement of the thiazole-based ladder-type heteroacene in the crystal structure revealing skewed π-π-stacking, and expected to possess better p-type semiconducting performance. The polymers all possess good molecular weights and excellent thermal properties. Conjugated polymers are an important class of chromophores for optoelectronic devices. Understanding and controlling their excited state properties, in particular, radiative and non-radiative recombination processes are among the greatest challenges that must be overcome. We report the synthesis and characterization of a molecularly encapsulated naphthalene diimide-based polymer, one of the most successfully used motifs, and explore its structural and optical properties. The molecular encapsulation enables a detailed understanding of the effect of interpolymer interactions. We reveal that the non-encapsulated analogue P(NDI-2OD-T) undergoes aggregation enhanced emission; an effect that is suppressed upon encapsulation due to an increasing π-interchain stacking distance. This suggests that decreasing π-stacking distances may be an attractive method to enhance the radiative properties of conjugated polymers in contrast to the current paradigm where it is viewed as a source of optical quenching., (© 2021 The Authors. Novel methods to synthesize electron-deficient π-conjugated polymers utilizing transition-metal-free coupling reactions for the use of nonfunctionalized monomers are attractive due to their improved atom economy and environmental prospective. Herein we describe the use of i PrMgCl·LiCl complex to afford thiazole-based conjugated polymers in the absence of any transition metal catalyst, that enables access to well-defined polymers with good molecular weights. The mechanistically distinct polymerizations proceeded via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S N Ar) reaction supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work demonstrates the first example of fully conjugated thiazole-based aromatic homopolymers without the need of any transition metal catalyst.

It is urgently desired yet challenging to synthesize porous graphitic carbon (PGC) in a bottom-up manner while circumventing the need for high-temperature pyrolysis. Here we present an effective and scalable strategy to synthesize PGC through acid-mediated aldol triple condensation followed by low-temperature graphitization. The deliberate structural design enables its graphitization in situ in solution and at low pyrolysis temperature. The resulting material features ultramicroporosity characterized by a sharp pore size distribution. In addition, the pristine homogeneous composition of the reaction mixture allows for solution-processability of the material for further characterization and applications. Thin films of this PGC exhibit several orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity compared to analogous control materials that are carbonized at the same temperatures. The integration of low-temperature graphitization and solution-processability not only allows for an energy-efficient method for the production and fabrication of PGC, but also paves the way for its wider employment in applications such as electrocatalysis, sensing, and energy storage., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

An extensive polycyclic π-system with 23 fused rings is synthesized via a highly efficient borylation reaction, in which four B-N covalent bonds and four B←N coordinate bonds are formed in one pot. B←N coordinate bonds not only lock the backbone into a near-coplanar conformation but also decrease the LUMO energy level to around -3.82 eV, demonstrating the dual utility of this strategy for the synthesis of extensive rigid polycyclic molecules and the development of n -type conjugated materials for organic electronics and organic photovoltaics.

There a few reports of rhodamine-based fluorescent sensors for selective detection of only Al 3+ , due to the challenge of identifying a suitable ligand for binding Al 3+ ion. The use of fluorophore moieties appended to a polymer backbone for sensing applications is far from mature. Here, we report a new fluorescent probe/monomer 4 and its ROMP derived polymer P for specific detection of Al 3+ ions. Both monomer 4 and its polymer P exhibit high selectivity toward only Al 3+ with no interference from other metal ions, having a limit detection of 0.5 and 2.1 µM, respectively. The reversible recognition of monomer 4 and P for Al 3+ was also proved in presence of Na 2 EDTA by both UV-Vis and fluorometric titration. The experimental data indicates the behavior of 4 and P toward Al 3+ is pH independent in medium conditions. In addition, the switch-on luminescence response of 4 at acidic pH (0 < 5.0), allowed us to specifically stain lysosomes (pH ~ 4.5-5.0) in live cells.

A facile synthetic method is developed to afford cyclodextrin-derived polymer networks that exhibit high selectivity in capturing certain organic compounds in water. The sustainable and scalable synthesis, together with the highly robust adsorption performance enables efficient removal and/or separation of organic molecules from aqueous solution in a continuous flow system.
