The management of waste and its environmental impact remains an issue. Thus, various strategies are being explored to mitigate this problem. For this research case, the ash of plantain peel and coal was harnessed to enhance soil for usage in designing road pavements. The form of the soil, as regards its plasticity and grain assortment, positions it as a sandy lean clay material. Geotechnical parameters of the natural soil were established before being treated with coal ash (CA) and plantain peel ash (PPA), and subjected to tests for the Atterberg limits, California bearing ratio (CBR) and compaction, as well as investigations pertaining to its crystallinity and morphology. These assessments showed that strength parameters of soil increased on adding CA and PPA. However, the inclusion of these admixtures should be conducted until optimal strength is achieved as seen in 9% CA + 6% PPA. The use of soil stabilised with CA and PPA is suitable for general fillings and embankments. These findings revealed that integrating CA and PPA together would have the potential of stabilising soil as pavement layer material while also eliminating the pollution that emerges from the improper disposal of coal and plantain peels from the environment. Plastic waste (PW) constitutes a nuisance to our environment despite several efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle it. This study experimentally explores the possibility of storing plastic waste within a cement-stabilised soil that can be used as a road pavement layer material without adversely affecting the geotechnical characteristics of the stabilised soil. The soil is an A-2-6 soil, according to classification by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Compaction characteristics, the California bearing ratio (CBR) and the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soil with 10% cement were determined for the 0, 2, 5, 10 and 15% addition of PW. The cementing of soil particles, which played a vital role in enhancing its strength on the addition of cement, may have been activated by the pozzolanic reaction between cement and soil particles. However, the addition of PW to this cement-stabilised mix led to a decrease in strength parameters at all variations. The soil with 10% cement and 2% PW yielded higher strength when compared to other mix ratios with PW and is suitable for use as a layer material in road pavement construction. As a sustainable strategy for PW management in developing nations, the usage of PW in cement-stabilised soil layer is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Semen parameters, especially sperm count and motility have been said to be diminishing over time with implications for fertility and infertility treatment. Objective: The objective of this study was to study semen parameters 10 years apart and describe any observed change. Design: A retrospective study carried out at Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, Nigeria. Semen parameters of 100 consecutive men who sought fertility treatment on account of infertility in 2003 and semen parameters of 100 consecutive men who also sought fertility treatment at the center in 2013 on account of infertility were analyzed and compared. A paired t-test was performed to ascertain whether sperm counts have diminished over the last decade. The World Health Organization semen values were used as standard. Main Outcome Measures: They are sperm count, motility, and mean progressive motility. Results: The mean sperm count in the 2003 group was 34.6 × 106/ml (range: 0.1-105.0 106/ml) compared with 21.8 × 106/ml (range: 0.1-80.0 × 106/ml) in the 2013 group. The mean motility was 47.9% in the 2003 group and 45.3% in the 2013 group. The mean progressive motility in the 2003 group was predominantly graded as good (50% good, 44% fair, 2% poor, 4% no motility) while in the 2013 group, the predominant grade of mean progressive motility was fair (15% good, 81% fair, 4% poor). Normal morphology was more commonly seen in the 2013 group compared to the 2003 group. Mean semen volume was 2.7 and 2.6 ml in 2003 and 2013 groups, respectively. The mean difference in sperm count (mean = 12.8, standard deviation = 31.6, n = 100) was significantly >0 providing evidence that sperm counts have diminished in the last decade. Conclusion: There was a statistically significant 37% drop in mean sperm count and mean progressive motility worsened in the last decade. Background: Endometriosis is a debilitating disease in women of child-bearing age. Objective: To describe the pattern of presentation, stage of endometriosis and biophysical profile of patients with endometriosis. Method: A retrospective study of 61 consecutive infertile patients between June 2003 and November 2014. Results: The means (±SD) of age (years) and of body mass index (BMI) (kg/m²) of the patients were 34.1 (4.3) and 25.8 (5.0), respectively. A relatively high percentage (43, 70.5%) of the women were in the age range of 31-40 years; had normal BMI (27, 44.3%); were nulliparous (53, 86.9%) and were of primary infertility (40, 65.6%). The mean (±SD) age at menarche, of cycle length, of the duration of flow and of years trying to conceive were 12.9 (1.7) years, 29.1 (2.7) days, 4.7 (1.1) days and 5.2 (3.8) years, respectively. A high proportion of them (37, 60.7%) presented with severe endometriosis. The main symptoms at presentation was dysmenorrhea (47, 73.8%). Of the 32 (52.5%) with associated utero-tubal factor, 20 (62.5%) were in severe stage of endometriosis. Among women with endometriosis, those with primary infertility were over three times more likely to present with menorrhagia than those with secondary infertility (χ2 = 4.70; p value = 0.03; OR = 3.33; 95% CI = 1.10, 10.12). Only 3 (4.9%) had diagnosis of endometriosis in first-degree relative. Dysmenorrhea was a strong predictor of severe endometriosis.
