Developing battery storage systems for clean energy applications is fundamental for addressing carbon emissions problems. Consequently, battery remaining useful life prognostics must be established to gauge battery reliability to mitigate battery failure and risks. Nonetheless, the remaining useful life prediction is challenging because the factors that lead to capacity degradation are not entirely understood but are known to complex internal battery mechanism and external environmental factor. Therefore, the aim of this review is to provide a critical discussion and analysis of remaining useful life prediction of lithium-ion battery storage system. In line with that, various methods and techniques have been investigated comprehensively highlighting outcomes, advantages, disadvantages, and research limitations. Besides, the review explores numerous crucial implementation factors concerning experiments, battery data, features, training, and computation capability. Furthermore, several key issues and challenges are outlined to identify the existing research gaps. Finally, this review delivers effective suggestions, opportunities and improvements which would be favourable to the researchers to develop an appropriate and robust remaining useful life prediction method for sustainable operation and management of future battery storage system.

Abstract A datacentre stores information and manages data access in fast and reliable manner. Failure of datacentre operation is not an option and can be catastrophic. Internet of things (IoT) devices in datacentre can automate management tasks and reduce human intervention and error. IoT devices can be used to manage many datacentre routine tasks such as monitoring physical infrastructure, updating software and configuration, monitoring network traffic, and automating alerting reports to respective authorities. The physical and cyber security of the datacentre can be handled by IoT technology by intrusion detection methods. By 2025, more than 25 billion things will be connected to the internet network, therefore massive data will be generated by different heterogeneous sources, and powerful processing engines such as complex event processing (CEP) are needed to handle such a fast and continuous stream of big data. The integration of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) can enhance CEP by introducing new features such as automated rule extraction and self-healing mechanism. This study aims to provide an overview of CEP, as well as its features and potential for integration with IoT applications and ML/DL techniques. We provide a review of recent research works to highlight the capability and applicability of CEP technology to monitor physical facilities and cyber security in detail. This review also highlights several issues and challenges, and provides suggestions for future research. The highlighted insights and recommendations in this paper could raise efforts toward the development of future datacentres based on CEP technology.

In this paper, we propose a unified deep learning model for monitoring elderly in execution of daily life activities such as eating, sleeping or taking medication. The proposed approach consists of three stages which are activity recognition, anomaly detection and next activity prediction. Such a system can provide useful information for the elderly, caregivers and medical teams to identify activities and generate preventive and corrective measures. In literature, these stages are discussed separately, however, in our approach, we make use of each stage to progress into the next stage. At first, activity recognition based on different extracted features is performed using a deep neural network (DNN), then an overcomplete-deep autoencoder (OCD-AE) is employed to separate the normal from anomalous activities. Finally, a cleaned sequence of consecutive activities is constructed and used by a long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm to predict the next activity. Since the last two stages depend on the activity recognition stage, we propose to increase its accuracy by exploiting different extracted features. The performance of the proposed unified approach has been evaluated on real smart home datasets to demonstrate its ability to recognize activities, detect anomalies and predict the next activity.

Several important advancements in the integration of energy storage into microgrids have fueled a lot of research and development over the last ten years to achieve the global decarbonization goal by 2050. The effective integration of the energy storage system in the microgrid is essential to ensure a safe, reliable, and resilient operation. Nevertheless, the utilization of energy storage in microgrids brings several issues, including poor power quality and intermittence characteristics. To address these concerns, appropriate energy storage controllers and optimization schemes are required to manage and optimize the power efficiently and securely. Although various research works have been performed and published over the years, the analytical assessment of energy storage controllers and optimization schemes integration into microgrids has not been carried out yet. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive analytical evaluation of energy storage controllers and optimization schemes in Microgrid by recognizing and evaluating the highly influential 110 manuscripts using the Scopus database within the year 2010-2021. The analytical analysis emphasizes the current research trends, keyword evaluation, research classification, country analysis, authorship, and research collaboration. The paper also discusses and compares 24 controllers and 21 optimization schemes in the highly cited 110 manuscripts. Besides, critical discussion and assessment are conducted over 15 emerging subject areas. The constructive analysis identifies the existing limitations and research gaps in the selected 110 papers. By analyzing the existing issues, this manuscript provides several guidelines and suggestions for future improvement. This survey will help to deepen the development concepts to achieve improved power quality, economic prosperity, energy savings, and increased efficiency towards sustainable operation and management in the microgrid.

Abstract The oil yield, measured in oil extraction rate per hectare in the palm oil industry, is directly affected by the ripening levels of the oil palm fresh fruit bunches at the point of harvesting. A rapid, non-invasive and reliable method in assessing the maturity level of oil palm harvests will enable harvesting at an optimum time to increase oil yield. This study shows the potential of using Raman spectroscopy to assess the ripeness level of oil palm fruitlets. By characterizing the carotene components as useful ripeness features, an automated ripeness classification model has been created using machine learning. A total of 46 oil palm fruit spectra consisting of 3 ripeness categories; under ripe, ripe, and over ripe, were analyzed in this work. The extracted features were tested with 19 classification techniques to classify the oil palm fruits into the three ripeness categories. The Raman peak averaging at 1515 cm−1 is shown to be a significant molecular fingerprint for carotene levels, which can serve as a ripeness indicator in oil palm fruits. Further signal analysis on the Raman peak reveals 4 significant sub bands found to be lycopene (ν1a), β-carotene (ν1b), lutein (ν1c) and neoxanthin (ν1d) which originate from the C=C stretching vibration of carotenoid molecules found in the peel of the oil palm fruit. The fine KNN classifier is found to provide the highest overall accuracy of 100%. The classifier employs 6 features: peak intensities of bands ν1a to ν1d and peak positions of bands ν1c and ν1d as predictors. In conclusion, the Raman spectroscopy method has the potential to provide an accurate and effective way in determining the ripeness of oil palm fresh fruits.

Globally, wind energy is growing rapidly and has received huge consideration to fulfill global energy requirements. An accurate wind power forecasting is crucial to achieve a stable and reliable operation of the power grid. However, the unpredictability and stochastic characteristics of wind power affect the grid planning and operation adversely. To address these concerns, a substantial amount of research has been carried out to introduce an efficient wind power forecasting approach. Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches have demonstrated high precision, better generalization performance and improved learning capability, thus can be ideal to handle unstable, inflexible and intermittent wind power. Recently, AI-based hybrid approaches have become popular due to their high precision, strong adaptability and improved performance. Thus, the goal of this review paper is to present the recent progress of AI-enabled hybrid approaches for wind power forecasting emphasizing classification, structure, strength, weakness and performance analysis. Moreover, this review explores the various influential factors toward the implementations of AI-based hybrid wind power forecasting including data preprocessing, feature selection, hyperparameters adjustment, training algorithm, activation functions and evaluation process. Besides, various key issues, challenges and difficulties are discussed to identify the existing limitations and research gaps. Finally, the review delivers a few selective future proposals that would be valuable to the industrialists and researchers to develop an advanced AI-based hybrid approach for accurate wind power forecasting toward sustainable grid operation.

The use of distributed generation has received wide attention due to low maintenance costs, reduced transmission line losses and network congestion, as well as minimal impact on climate change and global warming. However, the distributed generation integrated to the distribution network introduces various protection problems that cannot be solved by conventional protection systems. These obstacles include the bi-directional power flow and the variation in the fault current level during the topology change. Thus, appropriate fault detection and protection scheme are strongly recommended to increase safety and reliability of the distributed network. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the distributed network fault detection and protection strategies incorporated with distributed generation. This review also investigates the various fault detection approaches concerning types, communication methods, operation mode, constraints and benefits. Additionally, numerous island detection techniques are explored, focusing on generation types, parameters, cost and advantages. Moreover, the review outlines the various protection schemes highlighting categories, operation, constraints, strength and shortcomings. The key issues and challenges are discussed along with selective proposals for future research. All the highlighted viewpoints of this research will hopefully be beneficial to power system engineers and researchers for the advancement of distributed network fault and protection strategies for suitable operation and management of future distributed generation systems.

Though optimization algorithms for fuzzy logic controller (FIC)-based three-phase induction motor (TIM) systems are attractive for improving efficiency, existing methods have limited search capability. Here, the authors report a quantum-inspired lightning search algorithm with enhanced performance.

Experts have used ultrasound imaging to manually determine follicle count and perform measurements, especially in cases of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, due to the laborious and error-prone process of manual diagnosis, researchers have explored and developed medical image processing techniques to help with diagnosing and monitoring PCOS. This study proposes a combination of Otsu’s thresholding with the Chan–Vese method to segment and identify follicles in the ovary with reference to ultrasound images marked by a medical practitioner. Otsu’s thresholding highlights the pixel intensities of the image and creates a binary mask for use with the Chan–Vese method to define the boundary of the follicles. The acquired results were compared between the classical Chan–Vese method and the proposed method. The performances of the methods were evaluated in terms of accuracy, Dice score, Jaccard index and sensitivity. In overall segmentation evaluation, the proposed method showed superior results compared to the classical Chan–Vese method. Among the calculated evaluation metrics, the sensitivity of the proposed method was superior, with an average of 0.74 ± 0.12. Meanwhile, the average sensitivity for the classical Chan–Vese method was 0.54 ± 0.14, which is 20.03% lower than the sensitivity of the proposed method. Moreover, the proposed method showed significantly improved Dice score (p = 0.011), Jaccard index (p = 0.008) and sensitivity (p = 0.0001). This study showed that the combination of Otsu’s thresholding and the Chan–Vese method enhanced the segmentation of ultrasound images.

Keratoconus (KC) is a type of eye disease that involves the thinning of the corneal layer and a change in the semispherical shape of the cornea to a bulging cone shape when viewed laterally. KC is difficult to detect in the early stages of the disease, as the patient does not feel any pain. Hence, the development of a KC detection (KD) method using a digital image processing approach is needed for the early detection of KC so that physicians can provide patients with the subsequent treatment sooner. The objective of this study was to develop a method of KD using a camera from a smart device to capture anterior and lateral segment photographed eye images (A&LSPIs). A total of 280 images comprising 140 KC and 140 normal A&LSPIs were used in this study, and all images were validated by a qualified expert. First, the corneal area of both image views was segmented so the geometric features could be extracted using the automated modified active contour model and the semiautomated spline function for the anterior and lateral images, respectively. Then, the features were selected using infinite latent feature selection (ILFS) by identifying the feature rankings based on the graph weighting that was automatically learned by the probabilistic latent semantic analysis (PLSA). The results showed that the all-combined features, where the proposed and improved features were successfully top ranked, had 96.05% accuracy, 98.41% sensitivity and 93.65% specificity with the RFn=50 classifier, outperforming the 7-NNMaha and SVMRBF classifiers. In conclusion, this study successfully developed a keratoconus detection system based on fusion features using a digital image processing approach for A&LSPIs captured with a smartphone camera.

Ocular imaging has developed rapidly and plays a critical role in clinical care and ocular disease management. Development of image processing technologies pertinent to ocular diseases has paved the way for automated diagnostic systems including detection techniques using deep learning (DL) approaches. The prevalence of an abnormal tissue layer in the conjunctiva, known as pterygium eye disease, is increasing due to lack of awareness. Despite the non-cancerous/benign nature of pterygium, a clinical diagnosis from an ophthalmologist is still required to prevent the pterygium tissues from extending into the pupil, which would result in blurred vision. However, current diagnostic methods are mostly dependent on human expertise. Automated detection can potentially serve as an assistive method to reduce diagnosis time by applying a DL approach. Considering the lack of comprehensive research work on pterygium detection using DL, we propose a new architecture consisting of an improved CNN-based trained network named VggNet16-wbn that is derived from VggNet16, a pre-trained CNN algorithm. This paper presents an overview of the DL as a core approach to the transfer learning (TL) concept, as well as current efforts towards automated ocular detection approaches. A new architecture of a CNN-based trained network was proposed based on a network assessment from six CNN pre-trained networks to detect pterygium. This work consists of two main modules, namely, data acquisition and DCNN classification. The proposed trained network, VggNet16-wbn, shows the best performance with 99.22% accuracy, 98.45% sensitivity, and a perfect score on specificity and area under the curve metrics. This work has high potential for creating a pterygium screening system that can be used as a baseline for fully automated detection using a DL approach.

The development of a supercapacitor management system (SMS) for clean energy applications is crucial to addressing carbon emissions problems. Consequently, state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), and remaining useful life (RUL) for SMS must be developed to evaluate supercapacitor robustness and reliability for mitigating supercapacitor issues related to safety and economic loss. State estimation of SMS results in safe operation and eliminates undesirable event occurrences and malfunctions. However, state estimations of SMS are challenging and tedious, as SMS is subject to various internal and external factors such as internal degradation mechanism and environmental factors. This review presents a comprehensive discussion and analysis of model-based and data-driven-based techniques for SOC, SOH, and RUL estimations of SMS concerning outcomes, advantages, disadvantages, and research gaps. The work also investigates various key implementation factors such as a supercapacitor test bench platform, experiments, a supercapacitor cell, data pre-processing, data size, model operation, functions, hyperparameter adjustments, and computational capability. Several key limitations, challenges, and issues regarding SOC, SOH, and RUL estimations are outlined. Lastly, effective suggestions are outlined for future research improvements towards delivering accurate and effective SOC, SOH, and RUL estimations of SMS. Critical analysis and discussion would be useful for developing accurate SMS technology for state estimation of a supercapacitor with clean energy and high reliability, and will provide significant contributions towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) to achieve global collaboration and sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The increasing integration of renewable sources into distributed networks results in multiple protection challenges that would be insufficient for conventional protection strategies to tackle because of the characteristics and functionality of distributed generation. These challenges include changes in fault current throughout various operating modes, different distribution network topologies, and high-impedance faults. Therefore, the protection and reliability of a photovoltaic distributed network relies heavily on accurate and adequate fault detection. The proposed strategy utilizes the Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and ensemble bagged trees method to tackle these problems in distributed networks. Primarily, VMD is used to extract intrinsic mode functions from zero-, positive-, and negative-sequence components of a three-phase voltage signal. Next, the acquired intrinsic mode functions are supplied into the ensemble bagged trees mechanism for detecting fault events in a distributed network. Under both radial and mesh-soft normally open-point (SNOP) topologies, the outcomes are investigated and compared in the customarily connected and the island modes. Compared to four machine learning mechanisms, including linear discriminant, linear support vector mechanism (SVM), cubic SVM and ensemble boosted tree, the ensemble bagged trees mechanism (EBTM) has superior accuracy. Furthermore, the suggested method relies mainly on local variables and has no communication latency requirements. Therefore, fault detection using the proposed strategy is reasonable. The simulation outcomes show that the proposed strategy provides 100 percent accurate symmetrical and asymmetrical fault diagnosis within 1.25 ms. Moreover, this approach accurately identifies high- and low-impedance faults.

Fossil fuels and other conventional energy sources used to generate electricity are finite. Therefore, alternative energy sources should be pursued to meet present and future energy demands. The photovoltaic (PV) is a promising renewable energy source, especially for the remote areas. The PV is a DC power source that needs to be converted into usable AC power using an inverter. However, its nonlinearity and output fluctuation pose challenges in the design of PV based inverter. In this paper, a PV inverter controller system with the fundamentals of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and its applications and execution are reviewed. The different fuzzy controllers, inverter control algorithms, and switching techniques are studied. The findings indicate that the fuzzy logic controls have been gaining attention in the area of power control engineering, especially in inverter controller design for PV applications and generation. The FLC has a flexible and intelligent design, expedient user interface, easy computation and learning system, and combinations of different control algorithms. The FLC is also verifiable for completeness, redundancy, and consistency. However, finding the boundaries of membership functions and other rules of FLC requires manual tuning, long computation time, and considerable effort. This paper comprehensively reviews the FLC-based inverter control system to minimize PV output fluctuations, which cause inverter issues related to output harmonics, power factor, switching schemes, losses, and system implementation. The inverter system and its control strategy for future PV applications and generation require further research and development. Consequently, this review focuses on many factors and challenges and provides recommendations for designing capable and efficient inverter control systems for converting PV power to usable AC power. All the highlighted insights of this review will hopefully lead to increased efforts toward the development of the advanced inverter control systems for PV applications for AC loads and the utility grid.

The Internet of Things (IoT) empowers the development of heterogeneous systems for various application domains using embedded devices and diverse data transmission protocols. Collaborative integration of these systems in the industrial domain leads to incompatibility and interoperability at different automation levels, requiring unified coordination to exchange information efficiently. The hardware specifications of these devices are resource-constrained, limiting their performance in resource allocation, data management, and remote process supervision. Hence, unlocking network capabilities with other domains such as cloud and web services is required. This study proposed a platform-independent middleware module incorporating the Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture (OPC UA) and Representational State Transfer (REST) paradigms. The object-oriented structure of this middleware allows information contextualization to address interoperability issues and offers aggregated data integration with other domains. RESTful web and cloud platforms were implemented to collect this middleware data, provide remote application support, and enable aggregated resource allocation in a database server. Several performance assessments were conducted on the developed system deployed in Raspberry Pi and Intel NUC PC, which showed acceptable platform resource utilization regarding CPU, bandwidth, and power consumption, with low service, update, and response time requirements. This integrated approach demonstrates an excellent cost-effective prospect for interoperable Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication, enables remote process supervision, and offers aggregated bulk data management with wider domains.

Advances in computing and AI technology have promoted the development of connected health systems, indirectly influencing approaches to cataract treatment. In addition, thanks to the development of methods for cataract detection and grading using different imaging modalities, ophthalmologists can make diagnoses with significant objectivity. This paper aims to review the development and limitations of published methods for cataract detection and grading using different imaging modalities. Over the years, the proposed methods have shown significant improvement and reasonable effort towards automated cataract detection and grading systems that utilise various imaging modalities, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus, and slit-lamp images. However, more robust and fully automated cataract detection and grading systems are still needed. In addition, imaging modalities such as fundus, slit-lamps, and OCT images require medical equipment that is expensive and not portable. Therefore, the use of digital images from a smartphone as the future of cataract screening tools could be a practical and helpful solution for ophthalmologists, especially in rural areas with limited healthcare facilities.

Induction motor drive is widely used in many load applications in approximately 60% of the total industrial load. However, the dynamic configuration of the induction motor, especially a three-phase induction motor (TIM) is a nonlinear system which is not easy to explain theoretically due to sudden changes in load or speed. Therefore, the development of variable speed drive with a robust switching technique and controller design is compulsory for improving the performance efficiency of the TIM. An advanced switching strategy is used for controlling voltage, frequency, and reducing harmonic output signals while an efficient controller is required to regulate currents, speed, torque, and rotor flux. Nevertheless, the development of such controllers and switching methods need the extensive mathematical model and complex online computation. This paper presents a critical review of the different switching techniques, switching pattern of voltage space vectors and switching time to solve the existing problems and enhance the performance of the TIM. Also, the paper describes the different intelligent controller techniques in terms of scalar control and vector control. Consequently, a comprehensive review on conventional controllers such as proportional integral derivative and artificial intelligence controllers such as an artificial neural network, adaptive neural fuzzy inference system, and fuzzy logic control are explained on their structure, algorithm, and mathematical model. Furthermore, the different integrated circuits of the TIM drive controller are reviewed along with benefits and limitations, current issues and challenges, and conclude with recommendations. All the highlighted insights of this review will hopefully lead to increased efforts toward the development of the advanced switching techniques and controllers for the future induction motor drive.

State of charge (SOC) is one of the crucial parameters in a lithium-ion battery. The accurate estimation of SOC guarantees the safe and efficient operation of a specific application. However, SOC estimation with high accuracy is a serious concern to the automobile engineer due to the battery nonlinear characteristics and complex electrochemical reactions. This paper presents an improved nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input (NARX)-based neural network (NARXNN) algorithm for an accurate and robust SOC estimation of lithium-ion battery which is effective and computationally rich for controlling dynamic system and predicting time series. However, the accuracy of recurrent NARXNN depends on the amount of input order, output order, and hidden layer neurons. The unique contribution of the improved recurrent NARXNN-based SOC estimation is developed using lighting search algorithm (LSA) for finding the best value of input delays, feedback delays, and hidden layer neurons. The contributions are summarized as: 1) the computational capability of NARXNN model which does not require battery model and parameters rather only needs current, voltage, and temperature sensors; 2) the effectiveness of LSA which is verified with particle swarm optimization; 3) the adaptability, efficiency, and robustness of the model which are evaluated using FUDS and US06 drive cycles at varying temperatures conditions; and 4) the performance of the proposed model which is compared with back propagation neural network and radial basis function neural network optimized by LSA using different error statistical terms and computational time. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of SOC estimation in proposed method and existing techniques is presented for validation of NARXNN performance. The results prove that the proposed NARXNN model achieves higher accuracy with less computational time than other existing SOC algorithms under different temperature conditions and electric vehicle drive cycles.

A variety of rechargeable batteries are now available in world markets for powering electric vehicles (EVs). The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery is considered the best among all battery types and cells because of its superior characteristics and performance. The positive environmental impacts and recycling potential of lithium batteries have influenced the development of new research for improving Li-ion battery technologies. However, the cost reduction, safe operation, and mitigation of negative ecological impacts are now a common concern for advancement. This paper provides a comprehensive study on the state of the art of Li-ion batteries including the fundamentals, structures, and overall performance evaluations of different types of lithium batteries. A study on a battery management system for Li-ion battery storage in EV applications is demonstrated, which includes a cell condition monitoring, charge, and discharge control, states estimation, protection and equalization, temperature control and heat management, battery fault diagnosis, and assessment aimed at enhancing the overall performance of the system. It is observed that the Li-ion batteries are becoming very popular in vehicle applications due to price reductions and lightweight with high power density. However, the management of the charging and discharging processes, CO2 and greenhouse gases emissions, health effects, and recycling and refurbishing processes have still not been resolved satisfactorily. Consequently, this review focuses on the many factors, challenges, and problems and provides recommendations for sustainable battery manufacturing for future EVs. This review will hopefully lead to increasing efforts toward the development of an advanced Li-ion battery in terms of economics, longevity, specific power, energy density, safety, and performance in vehicle applications.

The state of charge (SOC) is a critical evaluation index of battery residual capacity. The significance of an accurate SOC estimation is great for a lithium-ion battery to ensure its safe operation and to prevent from over-charging or over-discharging. However, to estimate an accurate capacity of SOC of the lithium-ion battery has become a major concern for the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Therefore, numerous researches are being conducted to address the challenges and to enhance the battery performance. The main objective of this paper is to develop an accurate SOC estimation approach for a lithium-ion battery by improving back-propagation neural network (BPNN) capability using backtracking search algorithm (BSA). BSA optimization is utilized to improve the accuracy and robustness of BPNN model by finding the optimal value of hidden layer neurons and learning rate. In this paper, Dynamic Stress Test and Federal Urban Driving Schedule drive profiles are applied for testing the model at three different temperatures. The obtained results of the BPNN based BSA model are compared with the radial basis function neural network, generalized regression neural network and extreme learning machine model using statistical error values of root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean absolute percentage error, and SOC error to check and validate the model performance. The obtained results show that the BPNN based BSA model outperforms other neural network models in estimating SOC with high accuracy under different EV profiles and temperatures.

This paper presents a quantum lightning search algorithm (QLSA) -based optimization technique for controlling speed of the induction motor (IM) drive. The developed QLSA is implemented in fuzzy logic controller to generate suitable input and output fuzzy membership function for IM drive speed controller. The main objective of this paper is to develop QLSA-based fuzzy (QLSAF) speed controller to minimise the mean absolute error in order to improve the performance of the IM drive with changes in speed and mechanical load. The QLSAF-based speed controller is implemented in simulation model in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and the prototype is fabricated and experimentally tested in a fully integrated DSP for controlling the IM drive system. The experimental results of the developed QLSAF speed controller are compared with the simulation results under different performance conditions. Several experimental results show that there are good agreement of the controller parameters, SVPWM signals, and different types of speed responses and stator currents with the simulation results, which are verified and validated the performance of the proposed QLSAF speed controller. Also, the proposed QLSAF speed controller outperforms other studies with settling time in simulation and in experimental implementation, which validates the controller performance as well.

A microgrid (MG) is a local entity that consists of distributed energy resources (DERs) to achieve local power reliability and sustainable energy utilization. The MG concept or renewable energy technologies integrated with energy storage systems (ESS) have gained increasing interest and popularity because it can store energy at off-peak hours and supply energy at peak hours. However, existing ESS technology faces challenges in storing energy due to various issues, such as charging/discharging, safety, reliability, size, cost, life cycle, and overall management. Thus, an advanced ESS is required with regard to capacity, protection, control interface, energy management, and characteristics to enhance the performance of ESS in MG applications. This paper comprehensively reviews the types of ESS technologies, ESS structures along with their configurations, classifications, features, energy conversion, and evaluation process. Moreover, details on the advantages and disadvantages of ESS in MG applications have been analyzed based on the process of energy formations, material selection, power transfer mechanism, capacity, efficiency, and cycle period. Existing reviews critically demonstrate the current technologies for ESS in MG applications. However, the optimum management of ESSs for efficient MG operation remains a challenge in modern power system networks. This review also highlights the key factors, issues, and challenges with possible recommendations for the further development of ESS in future MG applications. All the highlighted insights of this review significantly contribute to the increasing effort toward the development of a cost-effective and efficient ESS model with a prolonged life cycle for sustainable MG implementation.

Remaining useful life (RUL) is a crucial assessment indicator to evaluate battery efficiency, robustness, and accuracy by determining battery failure occurrence in electric vehicle (EV) applications. RUL prediction is necessary for timely maintenance and replacement of the battery in EVs. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) technique to predict the RUL of lithium-ion batteries under various training datasets. A multi-channel input (MCI) profile is implemented and compared with single-channel input (SCI) or single input (SI) with diverse datasets. A NASA battery dataset is utilized and systematic sampling is implemented to extract 10 sample values of voltage, current, and temperature at equal intervals from each charging cycle to reconstitute the input training profile. The experimental results demonstrate that MCI profile-based RUL prediction is highly accurate compared to SCI profile under diverse datasets. It is reported that RMSE for the proposed MCI profile-based ANN technique is 0.0819 compared to 0.5130 with SCI profile for the B0005 battery dataset. Moreover, RMSE is higher when the proposed model is trained with two datasets and one dataset, respectively. Additionally, the importance of capacity regeneration phenomena in batteries B0006 and B0018 to predict battery RUL is investigated. The results demonstrate that RMSE for the testing battery dataset B0005 is 3.7092, 3.9373 when trained with B0006, B0018, respectively, while it is 3.3678 when trained with B0007 due to the effect of capacity regeneration in B0006 and B0018 battery datasets.

In this paper, the performance of an active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverter is evaluated, which is developed utilizing both silicon (Si) and gallium trioxide (Ga2O3) devices. The hybridization of semiconductor devices is performed since the production volume and fabrication of ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors are still in the early-stage, and they are highly expensive. In the proposed ANPC topology, the Si devices are operated at a low switching frequency, while the Ga2O3 switches are operated at a higher switching frequency. The proposed ANPC mitigates the fault current in the switching devices which are prevalent in conventional ANPCs. The proposed ANPC is developed by applying a specified modulation technique and an intelligent switching arrangement, which has further improved its performance by optimizing the loss distribution among the Si/Ga2O3 devices and thus effectively increases the overall efficiency of the inverter. It profoundly reduces the common mode current stress on the switches and thus generates a lower common-mode voltage on the output. It can also operate at a broad range of power factors. The paper extensively analyzed the switching performance of UWBG semiconductor (Ga2O3) devices using double pulse testing (DPT) and proper simulation results. The proposed inverter reduced the fault current to 52 A and achieved a maximum efficiency of 99.1%.

Telemedicine is application of electronic communication to deliver medical care remotely. An important aspect of telemedicine is teleconsultation which involves obtaining the professional opinion of a healthcare provider. One of the ways to improve eleconsultation is to equip the remote specialist via control of a laser pointer, located in the consultation area to provide a means of gesture. As such, accurate detection of laser spot is crucial in such systems as they rely on visual feedback, which enables the specialist in a remote site to control and point the laser in the active location using a standard mouse. The main issue in laser spot detection in a natural environment is the distinguishability of a laser point image from other bright regions and glare due to camera saturation. This problem remains unsolved without extensive computing and use of hardware filters. In this paper a hybrid algorithm is described which is aimed to work with natural indoor environment while limiting computation. This algorithm combines thresholding and blob evaluation methods with a novel image intensity profile comparison method based on linear regression. A comparison of the algorithm has been done with existing approaches. The developed algorithm shows a higher accuracy and faster execution time making it an ideal candidate for real time detection applications.

This paper describes the design and development of a component-based object oriented Expert System's Integrated Development Environment (ExSIDE). It is integrated with (i) a user-friendly manual and automated knowledge acquisition and management tool (ExSIDE_KAMT);(ii) an independent and customizable runtime module (ExSIDE_RTM); (iii) an object-oriented in-process Component Object Model (COM)-based inference engine (ExSIDE_IE); (iv) an object-oriented out-of-process COM-based inference engine (ExSIDE_IESvr); (v) and a PHP based inference engine (ExSIDE_PHP). ExSIDE_RTM can function independently as an Expert System Shell (ESS) and helps user to develop Expert Systems rapidly. ExSIDE_IE and ExSIDE_IES can be integrated with COM-supporting general purpose and scientific application development tools such as variants of C/C++/C#, BASIC (Visual BASIC®, REALbasic®), Java, MATLAB®, LabVIEW®, and Mathematica® to develop more advanced Expert Systems. Finally, ExSIDE_IE and ExSIDE_PHP can be used with Active Server Pages (ASP) and PHP technologies to generate web based Expert Systems. The unique framework of the ExSIDE enables rapid development of Expert Systems' on PC and web for technical and non-technical users. The overall system was developed successfully, and its usability was demonstrated via five unique Expert Systems case studies discussed in this paper.

Water supply system contains hydraulic components to supply water. The pumps are an important part in water distribution system and need to be well maintained for most of the time. The failure of pump operating system will result in the water shortage inside water tank. This phenomenon might occur due to the tripped pump and power. This paper proposed a remote monitoring and notification system applied in the pump house with the used of Complex Event Processing tools. Whereas, the notification system that act as an output adapter uses a Telegram Social Messaging application. The study is about how fast the notification system between using SMS and Telegram as an output adapter in the pump operation.

This research proposes a three-phase six-level multilevel inverter depending on twelve-switch three-phase Bridge and multilevel DC-link. The proposed architecture increases the number of voltage levels with less power components than conventional inverters such as the flying capacitor, cascaded H-bridge, diode-clamped and other recently established multilevel inverter topologies. The multilevel DC-link circuit is constructed by connecting three distinct DC voltage supplies, such as single DC supply, half-bridge and full-bridge cells. The purpose of both full-bridge and half-bridge cells is to provide a variable DC voltage with a common voltage step to the three-phase bridge’s mid-point. A vector modulation technique is also employed to achieve the desired output voltage waveforms. The proposed inverter can operate as a six-level or two-level inverter, depending on the magnitude of the modulation indexes. To guarantee the feasibility of the proposed configuration, the proposed inverter’s prototype is developed, and the experimental results are provided. The proposed inverter showed good performance with high efficiency of 97.59% following the IEEE 1547 standard. The current harmonics of the proposed inverter was also minimized to only 5.8%.

With the development of communication technologies, the use of wireless systems in biomedical implanted devices has become very useful. Bio-implantable devices are electronic devices which are used for treatment and monitoring brain implants, pacemakers, cochlear implants, retinal implants and so on. The inductive coupling link is used to transmit power and data between the primary and secondary sides of the biomedical implanted system, in which efficient power amplifier is very much needed to ensure the best data transmission rates and low power losses. However, the efficiency of the implanted devices depends on the circuit design, controller, load variation, changes of radio frequency coil’s mutual displacement and coupling coefficients. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on various power amplifier classes and their characteristics, efficiency and controller techniques that have been used in bio-implants. The automatic frequency controller used in biomedical implants such as gate drive switching control, closed loop power control, voltage controlled oscillator, capacitor control and microcontroller frequency control have been explained. Most of these techniques keep the resonance frequency stable in transcutaneous power transfer between the external coil and the coil implanted inside the body. Detailed information including carrier frequency, power efficiency, coils displacement, power consumption, supplied voltage and CMOS chip for the controllers techniques are investigated and summarized in the provided tables. From the rigorous review, it is observed that the existing automatic frequency controller technologies are more or less can capable of performing well in the implant devices; however, the systems are still not up to the mark. Accordingly, current challenges and problems of the typical automatic frequency controller techniques for power amplifiers are illustrated, with a brief suggestions and discussion section concerning the progress of implanted device research in the future. This review will hopefully lead to increasing efforts towards the development of low powered, highly efficient, high data rate and reliable automatic frequency controllers for implanted devices.

Person re‐identification across different surveillance cameras with disjoint fields of view has become one of the most interesting and challenging subjects in the area of intelligent video surveillance. Although several methods have been developed and proposed, certain limitations and unresolved issues remain. In all of the existing re‐identification approaches, feature vectors are extracted from segmented still images or video frames. Different similarity or dissimilarity measures have been applied to these vectors. Some methods have used simple constant metrics, whereas others have utilised models to obtain optimised metrics. Some have created models based on local colour or texture information, and others have built models based on the gait of people. In general, the main objective of all these approaches is to achieve a higher‐accuracy rate and lower‐computational costs. This study summarises several developments in recent literature and discusses the various available methods used in person re‐identification. Specifically, their advantages and disadvantages are mentioned and compared.

The use of wireless communication using inductive links to transfer data and power to implantable microsystems to stimulate and monitor nerves and muscles is increasing. This paper deals with the development of the theoretical analysis and optimization of an inductive link based on coupling and on spiral circular coil geometry. The coil dimensions offer 22 mm of mutual distance in air. However, at 6 mm of distance, the coils offer a power transmission efficiency of 80% in the optimum case and 73% in the worst case via low input impedance, whereas, transmission efficiency is 45% and 32%, respectively, via high input impedance. The simulations were performed in air and with two types of simulated human biological tissues such as dry and wet-skin using a depth of 6 mm. The performance results expound that the combined magnitude of the electric field components surrounding the external coil is approximately 98% of that in air, and for an internal coil, it is approximately 50%, respectively. It can be seen that the gain surrounding coils is almost constant and confirms the omnidirectional pattern associated with such loop antennas which reduces the effect of non-alignment between the two coils. The results also show that the specific absorption rate (SAR) and power loss within the tissue are lower than that of the standard level. Thus, the tissue will not be damaged anymore.

The automatic traffic sign detection and recognition (TSDR) system is very important research in the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Investigations on vision-based TSDR have received substantial interest in the research community, which is mainly motivated by three factors, which are detection, tracking and classification. During the last decade, a substantial number of techniques have been reported for TSDR. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on traffic sign detection, tracking and classification. The details of algorithms, methods and their specifications on detection, tracking and classification are investigated and summarized in the tables along with the corresponding key references. A comparative study on each section has been provided to evaluate the TSDR data, performance metrics and their availability. Current issues and challenges of the existing technologies are illustrated with brief suggestions and a discussion on the progress of driver assistance system research in the future. This review will hopefully lead to increasing efforts towards the development of future vision-based TSDR system.

Event recognition is one of the most active research areas in video surveillance fields. Advancement in event recognition systems mainly aims to provide convenience, safety and an efficient lifestyle for humanity. A precise, accurate and robust approach is necessary to enable event recognition systems to respond to sudden changes in various uncontrolled environments, such as the case of an emergency, physical threat and a fire or bomb alert. The performance of sudden event recognition systems depends heavily on the accuracy of low level processing, like detection, recognition, tracking and machine learning algorithms. This survey aims to detect and characterize a sudden event, which is a subset of an abnormal event in several video surveillance applications. This paper discusses the following in detail: (1) the importance of a sudden event over a general anomalous event; (2) frameworks used in sudden event recognition; (3) the requirements and comparative studies of a sudden event recognition system and (4) various decision-making approaches for sudden event recognition. The advantages and drawbacks of using 3D images from multiple cameras for real-time application are also discussed. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research directions in sudden event recognition.

In both military and civilian applications, the inertial navigation system (INS) and the global positioning system (GPS) are two complementary technologies that can be integrated to provide reliable positioning and navigation information for land vehicles. The accuracy enhancement of INS sensors and the integration of INS with GPS are the subjects of widespread research. Wavelet de-noising of INS sensors has had limited success in removing the long-term (low-frequency) inertial sensor errors. The primary objective of this research is to develop a novel inertial sensor accuracy enhancement technique that can remove both short-term and long-term error components from inertial sensor measurements prior to INS mechanization and INS/GPS integration. A high resolution spectral analysis technique called the fast orthogonal search (FOS) algorithm is used to accurately model the low frequency range of the spectrum, which includes the vehicle motion dynamics and inertial sensor errors. FOS models the spectral components with the most energy first and uses an adaptive threshold to stop adding frequency terms when fitting a term does not reduce the mean squared error more than fitting white noise. The proposed method was developed, tested and validated through road test experiments involving both low-end tactical grade and low cost MEMS-based inertial systems. The results demonstrate that in most cases the position accuracy during GPS outages using FOS de-noised data is superior to the position accuracy using wavelet de-noising.

In this paper, a variable threshold voice activity detector (VAD) is developed to control the operation of a two-sensor adaptive noise canceller (ANC). The VAD prohibits the reference input of the ANC from containing some strength of actual speech signal during adaptation periods. The novelty of this approach resides in using the residual output from the noise canceller to control the decisions made by the VAD. Thresholds of full-band energy and zero-crossing features are adjusted according to the residual output of the adaptive filter. Performance evaluation of the proposed approach is quoted in terms of signal to noise ratio improvements as well mean square error (MSE) convergence of the ANC. The new approach showed an improved noise cancellation performance when tested under several types of environmental noise. Furthermore, the computational power of the adaptive process is reduced since the output of the adaptive filter is efficiently calculated only during non-speech periods.

Implanted medical devices are very important electronic devices because of their usefulness in monitoring and diagnosis, safety and comfort for patients. Since 1950s, remarkable efforts have been undertaken for the development of bio-medical implanted and wireless telemetry bio-devices. Issues such as design of suitable modulation methods, use of power and monitoring devices, transfer energy from external to internal parts with high efficiency and high data rates and low power consumption all play an important role in the development of implantable devices. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on various modulation and demodulation techniques such as amplitude shift keying (ASK), frequency shift keying (FSK) and phase shift keying (PSK) of the existing wireless implanted devices. The details of specifications, including carrier frequency, CMOS size, data rate, power consumption and supply, chip area and application of the various modulation schemes of the implanted devices are investigated and summarized in the tables along with the corresponding key references. Current challenges and problems of the typical modulation applications of these technologies are illustrated with a brief suggestions and discussion for the progress of implanted device research in the future. It is observed that the prime requisites for the good quality of the implanted devices and their reliability are the energy transformation, data rate, CMOS size, power consumption and operation frequency. This review will hopefully lead to increasing efforts towards the development of low powered, high efficient, high data rate and reliable implanted devices.

This paper deals with the interface-relevant activity of a vehicle integrated intelligent safety system (ISS) that includes an airbag deployment decision system (ADDS) and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). A program is developed in LabWindows/CVI, using C for prototype implementation. The prototype is primarily concerned with the interconnection between hardware objects such as a load cell, web camera, accelerometer, TPM tire module and receiver module, DAQ card, CPU card and a touch screen. Several safety subsystems, including image processing, weight sensing and crash detection systems, are integrated, and their outputs are combined to yield intelligent decisions regarding airbag deployment. The integrated safety system also monitors tire pressure and temperature. Testing and experimentation with this ISS suggests that the system is unique, robust, intelligent, and appropriate for in-vehicle applications.

Recycling is one of the most efficient methods for environmental friendly waste management. Among municipal wastes, plastics are the most common material that can be easily recycled and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of its major types. PET material is used in consumer goods packaging such as drinking bottles, toiletry containers, food packaging and many more. Usually, a recycling process is tailored to a specific material for optimal purification and decontamination to obtain high grade recyclable material. The quantity and quality of the sorting process are limited by the capacity of human workers that suffer from fatigue and boredom. Several automated sorting systems have been proposed in the literature that include using chemical, proximity and vision sensors. The main advantages of vision based sensors are its environmentally friendly approach, non-intrusive detection and capability of high throughput. However, the existing methods rely heavily on deterministic approaches that make them less accurate as the variations in PET plastic waste appearance are too high. We proposed a probabilistic approach of modeling the PET material by analyzing the reflection region and its surrounding. Three parameters are modeled by Gaussian and exponential distributions: color, size and distance of the reflection region. The final classification is made through a supervised training method of likelihood ratio test. The main novelty of the proposed method is the probabilistic approach in integrating various PET material signatures that are contaminated by stains under constant lighting changes. The system is evaluated by using four performance metrics: precision, recall, accuracy and error. Our system performed the best in all evaluation metrics compared to the benchmark methods. The system can be further improved by fusing all neighborhood information in decision making and by implementing the system in a graphics processing unit for faster processing speed.

Computer vision systems have found wide application in foods processing industry to perform quality evaluation. The systems enable to replace human inspectors for the evaluation of a variety of quality attributes. This paper describes the implementation of the Fast Fourier Transform and Kalman filtering algorithms to detect the glutinous rice flour slurry (GRFS) gelatinization in an enzymatic âdodol. processing. The onset of the GRFS gelatinization is critical in determining the quality of an enzymatic âdodol.. Combinations of these two algorithms were able to detect the gelatinization of the GRFS. The result shows that the gelatinization of the GRFS was at the time range of 11.75 minutes to 14.75 minutes for 24 batches of processing. This paper will highlight the capability of computer vision using our proposed algorithms in monitoring and controlling of an enzymatic âdodol. processing via image processing technology.

A new approach was proposed to improve traditional background subtraction (BGS) techniques by integrating a gradient-based edge detector called a second derivative in gradient direction (SDGD) filter with the BGS output. The four fundamental BGS techniques, namely, frame difference (FD), approximate median (AM), running average (RA), and running Gaussian average (RGA), showed imperfect foreground pixels generated specifically at the boundary. The pixel intensity was lesser than the preset threshold value, and the blob size was smaller. The SDGD filter was introduced to enhance edge detection upon the completion of each basic BGS technique as well as to complement the missing pixels. The results proved that fusing the SDGD filter with each elementary BGS increased segmentation performance and suited postrecording video applications. Evidently, the analysis using F-score and average accuracy percentage proved this, and, as such, it can be concluded that this new hybrid BGS technique improved upon existing techniques.
