Through the examination of calcite twins, this research outlines the tectonic development and paleo stress patterns of the Paleozoic Routshon complex situated in the southeastern segment of the Sanandaj–Sirjan zone, a hinterland region of the Zagros orogeny in southeastern Iran. The study of orogenic phase indicates that the deformation event affecting the southern sector of the Sanandaj-Sirjan zone aligns with the Cimmerian orogenic phase of the Late Triassic period. A variety of structural features at both map and outcrop scales highlight the importance of slip partitioning in the structural evolution of this region, driven by inclined transpression. Observations suggest that the deformation related to contractional components includes steeply to moderately plunging folds, dip-slip domain deformation primarily involving thrusts, and ongoing deformation by strike-slip component motion, which results in thrust-related ductile shear zones. The analysis of calcite c-axis fabrics from mylonite samples obtained from these shear zones indicates a low-temperature monoclinic pattern of non-coaxial deformation. This deformation type underscores the impact of the strike-slip component in the development of progressive simple shear within thrust-related shear zones in this segment of the Sanandaj-Sirjan zone. Dynamic analysis of c-axis fabric data reveals a NE-SW orientation for the principal compressive axes (σ1) in this area. This direction, corroborated by additional data such as fault surface, GPS, and earthquake focal mechanism data, confirms that the orientation of the compressive axes (σ1) has remained consistent from the Late Triassic to the present.

This study investigates the variations in stress, strain, and deformation of the Earth’s crust in Iran arising from tectonic movements and seismic activities. We employed the Kostrov and Molnar methods to quantify these parameters, focusing on the influence of different zoning techniques on the estimations. Analyzing data from 637 earthquakes (moment magnitudes > 5.5) spanning 1909 to 2016, we determined the directions of maximum pressure, tension, and seismic strain through two primary approaches: comprehensive zoning and individual earthquake analysis. Additionally, we assess horizontal shortening and vertical crustal adjustments. Our methodology involves three distinct strategies: individual earthquake analysis, 1° × 1° zoning, and tectonic zoning. The findings demonstrate that the choice of zoning method significantly affects the direction and magnitude of seismic strain estimations. Although both methods identified significant deformations in the Dasht Bayaz and Qaen regions of Eastern Iran, differences between the Kostrov and Molnar methods in estimating seismic strain are observed. The high Zagros region shows signs of crustal thickening, whereas the Zagros foreland exhibits crustal thinning. Intriguingly, Eastern Alborz indicates uplift, and Western Alborz suggests subsidence, offering an alternative view to the conventional tectonic understanding of the Alborz range. These results highlight the critical role of zoning in stress analyses and the disparities between widely used estimation techniques. They underscore the necessity of careful method selection and interpretation in geodynamic studies, particularly in seismically active regions like Iran.

Rhombic structures have been observed in the Qom-Zefreh-Nayin-Dehsheir-Baft region, specifically along the direction of the dextral faults, which have caused significant changes in strike length. This study investigates the geological features and fault interactions in the region through the examination of aerial images, fault-lithology correlations, petrology, crustal thickness, and seismic studies. The analysis of aerial photos and geological correlations revealed the presence of ophiolites and pluto-volcanics associated with faults and rhombic structures. By conducting field geology and combining various geological studies, a pull-apart basin was identified in the area, contributing to the formation of three rhombic structures. This basin played a crucial role in the genesis of the region’s ophiolites and pluto-volcanics. The research suggests that the initial tensional stress leading to the pull-apart basin was caused by the right step of a dextral fault within the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic arc. This fault formation occurred due to the oblique Arabian subduction towards the Iranian plateau. During the Zagros orogeny, the stretched area persisted, leading to the formation of oceanic crust in this location. The subduction angle changes from subduction to super-subduction, resulting in the classification of the region into two types: C and E genes. Different types of magma, including alkaline, subalkaline, shoshonite, calcalkaline, and adakitic, were identified in this region. The study highlights the significance of tholeiitic arcs, abyssal features, crust thickness, and seismicity in understanding oblique diagonal subduction models and tensional pull-apart basins, which are crucial in the transition from subduction to super-subduction. This research offers valuable insights into the geological complexities of the region and opens up opportunities for further exploration of similar models.

This study investigates the consequences of unsustainable groundwater extraction in the Kabodarahang plain, a region significantly impacted by geohazards, such as land subsidence and sinkhole formation due to excessive groundwater use for agricultural and industrial activities. Over 32 years (1990–2022), a dramatic decrease in groundwater levels by approximately ~41 m has been observed, leading to notable geohazards. Employing radar interferometry techniques with Sentinel-1 satellite radar imagery and the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) tool, complemented by field data, this research aims to quantify the rate of subsidence and evaluate the associated risks, particularly in urban and residential zones. Findings from 2017 to 2018 indicate a subsidence rate of 14.5 cm, predominantly in urban areas, thereby elevating the risk of this geohazard. The results underscore the critical need for sustainable groundwater management policies and practices. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of radar interferometry in monitoring subsidence in the Kabodarahang plain and suggests that integrating such techniques with field surveys and satellite data can enhance the detection and management of risks related to unsustainable groundwater usage. This research contributes to the understanding of the impacts of groundwater depletion on geohazards and supports the development of strategies for sustainable groundwater use to mitigate such risks.

Many beneficial proteins have limited natural availability, which often restricts their supply and thereby reduces their potential for therapeutic or industrial usage. The advent of recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology enables the utilization of different microbes as surrogate hosts to facilitate the production of these proteins. This microbial technology continues to evolve and integrate with modern innovations to develop more effective approaches for increasing the production of recombinant biopharmaceuticals. These strategies encompass fermentation technology, metabolic engineering, the deployment of strong promoters, novel vector elements such as inducers and enhancers, protein tags, secretion signals, synthetic biology, high-throughput devices for cloning, and process screening. This appraisal commences with a general overview regarding the manufacture of recombinant proteins by microbes and the production of biopharmaceuticals, their trends towards the development of biopharmaceuticals, and then discusses the approaches adopted for accomplishing this. The design of the upstream process, which also involves host selection, vector design, and promoter design, is a crucial component of production strategies. On the other hand, the downstream process focuses on extraction and purification techniques. Additionally, the review covers the most modern tools and resources, methods for overcoming low expression, the cost of producing biopharmaceuticals in microbes, and readily available recombinant protein products.

Introduction: The East Iran orogen has experienced multiple buckling phases resulting in the formation of strike-slip fault splays. The geometric and kinematic characteristics of these splays are influenced by folding mechanisms. This study focuses on investigating the structural characteristics and tectonic evolution model of the Khousf splay, located in the northern terminus of the Nehbandan right-lateral strike-slip fault system.Methods: Field visits and geometrical properties from map views were used to analyze the structural features of the Khousf splay. The splay was found to consist of a multi-plunging anticline and syncline, referred to as the Khousf anticline and Khousf syncline, respectively. Flexural slip was identified as a significant mechanism for the formation of these structures. Structural evidence, including parasitic folds, active folds, and strike-slip duplexes, suggested that flexural slip occurred on discrete movement horizons among the rock units.Results: Analysis of the parasitic folds in the cores and limbs of the Khousf anticline and syncline revealed M, W, Z, and S shapes, with complex slicken-line patterns observed on faults parallel to the beds at the limbs. The analysis results indicated strain partitioning and inclined left- and right-lateral transpressional zones. Shortening estimates obtained from profiles in the Shekarab inclined transpressional zone were approximately 33%, 65%, and 68% for NE-SW, N-S, and NW-SE profiles, respectively. In the Arc area, which is the core of the anticline, shortening estimates from NE-SW and N-S profiles ranged from 14% to 10%. Structural analysis of the folds in this area revealed broad, close, semi-elliptical, and parabolic shapes, suggesting that secondary folds with NW-SE axis directions have been superimposed on the first-generation folds with E-W axis directions in the Khousf refolded splay.Discussion: The findings of this study highlight the structural characteristics and tectonic evolution model of the Khousf splay in the northern terminus of the Nehbandan right-lateral strike-slip fault system. The results suggest that flexural slip played a crucial role in the formation of the multi-plunging anticline and syncline in the Khousf splay. The presence of parasitic folds and complex slicken-line patterns on faults indicate the complexity of deformation processes. The observed strain partitioning and inclined transpressional zones suggest a complex tectonic history in the study area. The superimposition of secondary folds with different axis directions on first-generation folds adds further complexity to the structural evolution of the Khousf refolded splay. Overall, this study provides new insights into the structural characteristics and tectonic evolution of the Khousf splay in the East Iran orogen.

Rainfall is very important elements in slope failure. Rainfall infiltrating into the slope is the main factor that triggers slope failure. The infiltration of the surface water affects both resisting and disturbing components of the slope which in turn decrease the slope stability factor. Shear strength parameters are very important for design slope and foundation. In this study, Consolidated Drained (CD) triaxial test were conducted on granitic residual soil specimens, both under saturated and unsaturated conditions with different moisture content at 16%, 17% and 18%. While, the Soil Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) were developed using the pressure plate extractor apparatus and gives a result of residual suction, 148 kPa which equivalent to maximum apparent cohesion, 17 kPa. Therefore the shear strength variation with respect to suction was found to be non-linear for the entire test in accordance to the curved surface envelope soil shear strength model (CSESSM).

Geohazards, such as earthquakes, pose significant threats to human life and infrastructure in various regions across the globe. Iran, in particular, is highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its unique structural and tectonic characteristics. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor geohazards in order to mitigate their impacts. Several techniques, including the global positioning system, geodesy, tacheometry, and mapping cameras, have been developed for this purpose. Among these methods, radar interferometry has emerged as a particularly accurate and cost-effective approach. It is capable of operating under all weather conditions, 24 h a day, and can cover large areas with high spatial and temporal resolution. In this research, we employed Sentinel 1A images and radar interferometry to investigate the changes in the Earth’s surface following earthquakes in the marginal strip of the Persian Gulf. Specifically, our focus was on earthquakes in Bandar Khamir, and we analyzed the Earth’s surface changes three days and fifteen days after the events. The findings of our study revealed that the most significant uplift occurred around Bandar Khamir, with an uplift rate of 14 cm. Conversely, the highest subsidence was observed near Bandar Charak, with a subsidence of 12 cm. Furthermore, we observed a rise of 32 cm around the eastern and northern regions of Bandar Khamir 11 days after the initial period, accompanied by a subsidence of 31 cm around Bandar Lange and Bandar Charak. These results underscore the importance of continuous monitoring of earthquakes and their impact on the Earth’s surface, particularly in coastal areas where the effects on the water table and coastal infrastructure can be severe. In conclusion, this study highlights the significance of employing radar interferometry as a powerful tool for monitoring and assessing the impacts of earthquakes.

The Alborz mountain range in northern Iran is part of the active and seismic Alpide belt, where assessing seismic hazards is crucial due to the region’s history of large instrumental earthquakes and destructive seismic background. Moment rate estimation, which quantifies tectonic activity, offers a novel approach to understanding the energy potential of active tectonic regions. In this study, a regional perspective is employed to investigate the maximum horizontal acceleration for Tehran, the major city in Alborz, resulting from the Sorkh-e Hesar and Ghasr-e-Firuzeh faults located approximately 7.5 km southeast of Tehran. These faults have a seismic potential of Mw 6.5 and a gravity of ~0.5723. While previous studies have identified faults in northern Tehran as the greatest seismic risk, our findings suggest otherwise. The calculated geological moment was 5.18218 × 1017 Nm/y, with a seismic moment rate of 1.83375 × 1014 Nm/y, providing valuable insights into fault activity and seismic potential in the study area.

This study proposes an artificial intelligence approach to assess watershed morphometry in the Makran subduction zones of South Iran and Pakistan. The approach integrates machine learning algorithms, including artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector regression (SVR), and multivariate linear regression (MLR), on a single platform. The study area was analyzed by extracting watersheds from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and calculating eight morphometric indices. The morphometric parameters were normalized using fuzzy membership functions to improve accuracy. The performance of the machine learning algorithms is evaluated by mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and correlation coefficient (R2) between the output of the method and the actual dataset. The ANN model demonstrated high accuracy with an R2 value of 0.974, MSE of 4.14 × 10−6, and MAE of 0.0015. The results of the machine learning algorithms were compared to the tectonic characteristics of the area, indicating the potential for utilizing the ANN algorithm in similar investigations. This approach offers a novel way to assess watershed morphometry using ML techniques, which may have advantages over other approaches.

In this study, the active tectonics, paleoseismicity, and seismic hazards of the Doroud Fault are examined through high-resolution satellite image interpretations, field investigations, outcrop and trench excavations, and the dating of geochronology samples. The Doroud Fault (DF), one of the essential segments of the Main Recent Fault in the northern margin of the Zagros mountain range, has a historical and instrumental background of high seismicity. We present the first constraints from tectonic geomorphology and paleoseismology along the Doroud Fault near the capital city of Dorud. Detailed observations from satellite imagery, field investigations, real-time kinematic (RTK) measurements, paleoseismological trenching, the radiocarbon (C14), and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) as ages allowed us to map the fault in detail, describe and characterize its kinematics, and document its recent activity and seismic behavior (cumulative displacements, paleoseismicity, and magnitude, as well as recurrence interval) relevant to the recent seismic activity of the Doroud Fault during the late Holocene as one of the most important seismogenic faults in Zagros. Modern alluvial terraces of gullies and loess accumulations are systematically deflected and/or offset with co-seismic rupture, landslides, and scarps, indicating that the Doroud Fault has been active in the late Quaternary and is characterized by dextral strike–slip movements with a normal component. In addition, our findings provide a comprehensive analysis of the fault displacement, the timing of paleoearthquakes, and the right-lateral slip rate of the Doroud Fault. The late Holocene slip rate of the Doroud Fault using the OSL dating the gully is as follows: the minimum and maximum horizontal slip rates are estimated to be 1.82 and 2.71 mm/yr, and vertical slip rates of 1.03 and 1.53 mm/yr are calculated for the past 4600 ± 900 years in the middle segment of the fault. This study focused on a paleoseismological trench within the archeological sites of Darbe-Astaneh. The central portion of the fault has historically hosted more than nine earthquakes in the last 66 ka years, according to the study’s findings. According to paleoseismology studies, the Doroud Fault has the seismic capability to cause earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7.4 and a total slip rate of about 3.83 ± 0.1 m. The average recurrence interval for the identified paleoearthquakes is approximately 104 ± 7 years.

IntroductionThe decreasing level of physical activity among female undergraduates is worrying as it is associated with the increased risk of non-communicable diseases. Thus, this study aimed to identify the motivations, barriers and preferences towards exercise among female undergraduates in Malaysia.MethodsA non-probability purposive sampling was used for the recruitment process. The inclusion criteria of the participants were registered female undergraduates and aged between 18-30 years old. A semi-structured in-depth interview was used to collect topic-related information from the participants and signed consents were obtained prior to the interview. The interview questions were on respondents' understanding of exercise, motivation and barriers to exercise, and exercise preferences. The recruitment process was conducted until the data was saturated. All interviews were audio recorded and manually transcribed verbatim. NVivo 11 was used to conduct the inductive analysis of the data to develop themes for motivation and barriers to exercise. For exercise preferences, four predetermined themes were used.FindingsA total of 26 respondents participated in this study. Eight themes were found for motivation to exercise, with the most common themes being maintaining or improving appearance, health benefits and togetherness. For barriers of exercising, five themes were found, and the most common ones were disliking exercise and no motivation. For exercise preferences, most respondents preferred a structured exercise program with flexibility in terms of when and where the exercise could be conducted. Light or moderate intensity exercise for 10-30 minutes with a frequency of 1-2 times a week was desired the most among the respondents.ConclusionIn conclusion, personal and environmental factors play important roles in motivating or hampering female undergraduates to exercise, and a structured program was the preferred mode of exercise of these respondents. A new exercise module was designed based on this needs assessment with a 70% acceptance rate among the participants. These findings can help the future development of more exercise modules tailored to female university students.

This research assessed stress regimes and fields in eastern Iran using fault-slip data and the tectonic events associated with these changes. Our stress analysis of the brittle structures in the Shekarab Mountains revealed significant changes in stress regimes from the late Cretaceous to the Quaternary. Reconstructing stress fields using the age and sense of fault movements showed that during the late Cretaceous, the direction of the maximum horizontal stress axes (σ1) under a compressional stress regime was ~N290°. This stress regime led to the uplifting of ophiolites and peridotites in eastern Iran. During the Eocene, the σ1 direction was NE-SW. The late Eocene and Oligocene stress states showed two distinct transpression and transtension stress regimes. This transition from transpression to transtension in the eastern Shekarab Mountains was the consequence of regional variations in stress regimes. The Quaternary stress state indicates that the tectonic regime in the Quaternary is strike-slip and the σ1 direction is ~N046°, which coincides with the current convergence direction of the Arabia–Eurasia plates. Our paleostress analysis revealed that four distinct stress regimes have been recognized in the area, including compressional, transtensional, transpressional, and strike-slip regimes. Our findings indicated that the diversity of the tectonic regimes was responsible for the formation of a variety of geological structures, including folds with different axes, faults with different mechanisms, and the current configuration of the Sistan suture zone.

The opposite-sense fault block rotation across the continental strike-slip faulting plays an important role in accommodating crustal deformation in the north of the East Iran orogen. This research constrains the post-Neogene kinematics of the NW-SE to E-W left-lateral transpressional zones at the northern termination of the N-S striking right-lateral Neh fault system in the East Iran orogen. Using two case studies, we analyzed the NW-SE Birjand splay and the E-W Shekarab transpression zone by analysis of satellite images, structural features, fault geometry and kinematics, GPS (Global Positioning System) velocities, fault- and earthquake-slip stress inversion, and paleomagnetic data. Our results show two distinctive regions of opposite-sense fault block rotations and with different rotation rates. As an asymmetric arc, the Birjand splay displays a transition from the prevailing N-S right lateral shear in the east to NW-SE left lateral transpression in the middle and E-W left lateral shear in the west. In the east, with clockwise fault block rotation, the N-S right lateral faults and the NW-SE oblique left-lateral reverse faults constitute push-ups through the restraining fault bends. In the west, with counterclockwise fault block rotation, the Shekarab transpression zone is associated with the duplex, pop-up, and shear folds. Our suggested kinematic model reveals that the N-S right-lateral shear is consumed on the left-lateral transpressional zones through the vertical axis fault block rotation. This led to an E-W shortening and N-S along-strike lengthening in the East Iran orogen. This research improves our understanding of how opposite fault block rotations accommodate India- and Eurasia-Arabia convergence in the north of the East Iran orogen. The suggested model has implications in the kinematic evolution of intra-plate strike-slip faulting through continental collision tectonics.

In this paper, faults, one of the most important causes of geohazards, were investigated from a kinematic and geometric viewpoint in the northern part of the Sistan suture zone (SSZ), which serves as the boundary between the Afghan and Lut blocks. Furthermore, field evidence was analyzed in order to assess the structural type and deformation mechanism of the research area. In the northern Birjand mountain range, several ~E–W striking faults cut through geological units; geometric and kinematic analyses of these faults indicate that almost all faults have main reverse components, which reveals the existing compressional stress in the study area. The northern Birjand mountain range is characterized by four main reverse faults with ~E–W striking: F1–F4. The F1 and F2 reverse faults have southward dips, while the F3 and F4 reverse faults have northward dips. Moreover, the lengths of the F1, F2, F3, and F4 faults are 31, 17, 8, and 38 km, respectively. These faults, with reverse components that have interactive relationships with each other, form high relief structures. The study area’s main reverse faults, including F1 to F4, are extensions of the Nehbandan fault system, while their kinematics and geometry in the northern Birjand mountain range point to an N–S pop-up structure.

This study provides a multi-disciplinary overview of the seismology and geodetic data with tectonics analysis in order to provide an evaluation of stress trajectories, and probabilistic fault rupture hazard assessment. Based on the different scenarios obtained from the comparison of several overviews and their interpretation, we investigated the kinematics and active tectonics of different structural zones. In this study, the magnitudes and directions of seismic and geodetic strain rates (SSR and GSR) were evaluated using reliable earthquake focal mechanisms and all available GPS data (1999–2015) in the structural subzones of northern Iran, where have experienced more than 14 strong instrumental earthquakes (Mw ≥ 6). In addition, a tectonic stress model was inferred from the Focal Mechanism Stress Inversion (FMSI). The new crustal stress map was proposed by the weighted average analysis of the SSR, GSR, and FMSI. N35.5° E and N104° E were estimated for the Alborz and Talesh mountains, respectively. The numerical analysis of stress regimes confirms the slip partitioning mechanism of oblique shortening on the sub-parallel thrusts and strike-slip faults in the area. Four main stress regime categories were defined, including thrust (49.37%), strike-slip (39.24%), thrust with a strike-slip component (2.53%), normal (1.27%), and unknown faulting (7.59%). Seismic and geodetic moment rates (SMR and GMR) and their comparison were also calculated in order to evaluate the function of these parameters in determining the seismicity arrangement. The ratio of the seismic/geodetic moment rates for the area is ~70.7%. This ratio for the Alborz, western Koppeh-Dagh, north part of Central Iran, South Caspian Basin, and Talesh is ~0.9, 0.3, 11.9, 0.3, and 57.3, respectively, which indicates the most elastic energy has been released in the Talesh and the north part of Central Iran. The comparison of geodetic moment rates in the subzones of the area indicates that geodetic deformation is high in the Central Alborz (networks 8, 9, 17) and western Koppeh-Dagh (networks 5, 13).

Earth fissure structures are a common type of geohazard associated with geotechnical surface ruptures that can occur almost anywhere on the ground surface due to a variety of different mechanisms, and in most cases, these hazardous cracks have resulted in severe damage to infrastructure. Investigation of the structural characteristics of fissures in an active tectonic area (such as Birjand in eastern Iran) can improve our understanding of connections between the fissures and structural geology. The first reported earth fissures in NW Birjand are distributed along the North Birjand fault. Field observations and analysis of the detailed topography cross-sections using the real-time kinematic (RTK) technique have been used to infer the fissure development. Morphometric analysis of faults and fissures shows that the long axis of most fissure structures is distributed perpendicular to the strike of the North Birjand fault. The average volume strain in the study area was calculated to be 14.68 percent based on fissure geometry studies, with the maximum volume strain corresponding to the location of the North Birjand fault’s youngest splay. This splay formed fault-propagation folds with exposed fissure structures. This study shows that the fault-propagation folds in this system are subjected to the activity and evolution of the ground fissure as a result of the expansion of tensile stress.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) monitors surface change and displacement over a large area with millimeter-level precision and meter-level resolution. Anar fault, with a length of ~200 km, is located in central Iran. Recent seismological studies on the fault indicated that it is approaching the end of its seismic cycle. Although a large earthquake is imminent, the mechanism of the fault is not well understood. Therefore, understanding and discovering the mechanism of Anar fault remains a challenge. Here, we present an approach of displacement fault analysis utilizing a combination of InSAR data obtained from the persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) method and 178 Sentinel-1 images (ascending and descending) (2017–2020). We incorporated groundwater samples from 40 wells, radon concentration anomaly mapping, Global Positioning System (GPS), and 3D displacement measurement acquired over four years (2016–2020). We investigated and monitored the deformation of the fault plate’s behavior over the last three years (2017–2020) to explore new evidence and signature of displacement. The results show that the time series analysis in the fault range has an increasing displacement rate in all dimensions. We observed that the line-of-sight (LOS) displacement rate varied from −15 mm to 5 mm per year. Our calculations show that the E–W, N–S, and vertical displacement rates of the fault blocks are 2 mm to −2 mm, 6 mm to −6 mm, and 2 mm to −4 mm per year, respectively. An anomaly map of the radon concentration shows that the complete alignment of the high concentration ranges with the fault strike and the radon concentration increased on average from 23.85 Bq/L to 25.30 Bq/L over these three years. Therefore, we predict rising the radon concentration is due to the increase in activity which resulted in a deformation. Finally, our findings show that the Anar fault is an oblique and right-lateral strike-slip with a normal component mechanism. We validated the proposed method and our results by comparing the GPS field data and PSI measurements. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the PSI measurement is estimated to be 0.142 mm. Based on the supporting evidence and signature, we conclude that the Anar fault activity increased between 2017 and 2020.

Seismic refraction survey is a non destructive method used in site investigation to identify the seismic velocity subsurface strata. Although it is widely known, the reliability of the result is still doubtable for some reason as well as due to an engineer’s ignorant, which insist on using conventional method rather than new advanced method causing the lack of usage in geophysical method for testing. This study aims to produce a correlation between P-wave velocity value and point load strength index value for shale. Both field and laboratory tests were carried out. In order to obtain the P-wave value, seismic refraction method was conducted as a field test at Precint 4, Putrajaya, Malaysia to achieve the Pwave velocity value of the shale bed. Ten samples of shale were collected from the field and laboratory tests were conducted. The tests are divided into three sections, namely non-destructive laboratory test, physical properties test and mechanical properties test. Ultrasonic Velocity Test via PUNDIT test was conducted as non-destructive laboratory test to acknowledge the P-wave velocity value in laboratory. Both field and laboratory P-wave velocity value were then compared and the result delivers are reliable due to it is within the range. For physical properties test, the rock density and porosity were acknowledged. Meanwhile, Point Load Test was conducted as mechanical properties. Correlation for both Pwave velocity value and point load strength value were achieved via producing an empirical relationship as the end result. Prediction of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) value was made via converting the point load strength value to UCS value using a correlation. By acknowledging this empirical relationship, it shows that geophysical methods are able to produce a reliable result. Hence more and widely used of geophysical method will be profound in the future.

Many beneficial proteins have limited natural availability, which often restricts their supply and thereby reduces their potential for therapeutic or industrial usage. The advent of recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology enables the utilization of different microbes as surrogate hosts to facilitate the production of these proteins. This microbial technology continues to evolve and integrate with modern innovations to develop more effective approaches for increasing the production of recombinant biopharmaceuticals. These strategies encompass fermentation technology, metabolic engineering, the deployment of strong promoters, novel vector elements such as inducers and enhancers, protein tags, secretion signals, synthetic biology, high-throughput devices for cloning, and process screening. This appraisal commences with a general overview regarding the manufacture of recombinant proteins by microbes and the production of biopharmaceuticals, their trends towards the development of biopharmaceuticals, and then discusses the approaches adopted for accomplishing this. The design of the upstream process, which also involves host selection, vector design, and promoter design, is a crucial component of production strategies. On the other hand, the downstream process focuses on extraction and purification techniques. Additionally, the review covers the most modern tools and resources, methods for overcoming low expression, the cost of producing biopharmaceuticals in microbes, and readily available recombinant protein products. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the extent of knowledge among emergency residents (ERs) regarding the identification of common local venomous snakes and the management of snakebites and to identify predictive factors influencing the adequacy of this knowledge. METHODOLOGY: This study conducted a self-developed, questionnaire-based, anonymous, and selfadministered cross-sectional survey from March to June 2018 at two major urban hospitals in Malaysia's Klang Valley region: the Emergency Department (ED) of University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and the ED of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR). A structured questionnaire covering demographic information, snakebite recognition, and management was distributed to ERs. We employed a nonprobability, purposive universal sampling method. We randomly selected samples from a list provided by the person in charge. RESULTS: Only 16.3% demonstrated adequate knowledge in this domain. Univariate logistic regression analysis indicated a significant association between age and knowledge adequacy (p<0.05) and a marginal association between knowledge adequacy and gender (p=0.046) or prior snakebite training (p=0.05). Subsequent backward stepwise logistic regression analysis identified age as the sole significant independent predictor, accounting for gender, work experience, position, training received, and management experience (p=0.012; OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.07-1.67). CONCLUSION: the study revealed a deficiency in knowledge regarding snakebite recognition and management among emergency residents. Advanced age is a predictor of knowledge adequacy in snakebite management. Therefore, implementing an improved educational program targeting healthcare professionals across all levels and categories is a viable and practical solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orang Asal are the indigenous people of Malaysia. Orang Asal in Peninsular Malaysia are collectively known as Orang Asli. They are a marginalised population group. Health status among the indigenous is generally poor and shows an increasing trend of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).Thus, IMAM Response & Team Relief (IMARET), a medical-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) organises a mobile clinic which provides monthly free healthcare services to Orang Asli population. Drug Utilisation Evaluation (DUE) is an ongoing, systematic criteria-based programme of medicine evaluation to ensure appropriate medicine use. This study was conducted to determine the DUE on the physician prescribing pattern on NCD. The specific objectives are to identify the prevalence of NCD, to determine the appropriate medications used for NCD and to compare the physician prescribing pattern. This study was conducted as retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study between January 2017 to December 2018. The subjects were screened using convenience sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. It was carried out using prescription data collected in the mobile clinic. Hypertension was the most common prevalent among the Orang Asli (n = 48, 18.5%), followed by gout (n = 7, 2.7%), dyslipidaemia (n = 4, 1.5%), diabetes mellitus (n = 2, 0.8%) and asthma (n = 1, 0.4%). Drug therapy is a very important component in the disease management. The most common prescribed antihypertensive, anti-gout, anti-dyslipidemic, and anti-asthmatic agents were calcium channel blocker, colchicine, statin and short-acting beta-2 agonist (SABA) respectively. However, common prescribed anti-diabetic agents were biguanide and sulfonylurea. Oral nifedipine, perindopril, salbutamol and glibenclamide were not listed in National Essential Medicine List (NEML). In contrast, only oral glibenclamide was not listed in Ministry of Health (MoH) Medicine Formulary. Appropriate prescribing pattern among the physicians help to reduce the morbidity and mortality of NCDs among Orang Asli. Appropriateness of the prescribed medications is influenced by the limited availability of the medications. Rational and standard prescribing pattern by the physicians are needed to ensure effective and safe treatment for the patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The decreasing level of physical activity among female undergraduates is worrying as it is associated with the increased risk of non-communicable diseases. Thus, this study aimed to identify the motivations, barriers and preferences towards exercise among female undergraduates in Malaysia. Methods: A non-probability purposive sampling was used for the recruitment process. The inclusion criteria of the participants were registered female undergraduates and aged between 18–30 years old. A semi-structured in-depth interview was used to collect topic-related information from the participants and signed consents were obtained prior to the interview. The interview questions were on respondents' understanding of exercise, motivation and barriers to exercise, and exercise preferences. The recruitment process was conducted until the data was saturated. All interviews were audio recorded and manually transcribed verbatim. NVivo 11 was used to conduct the inductive analysis of the data to develop themes for motivation and barriers to exercise. For exercise preferences, four predetermined themes were used. Findings: A total of 26 respondents participated in this study. Eight themes were found for motivation to exercise, with the most common themes being maintaining or improving appearance, health benefits and togetherness. For barriers of exercising, five themes were found, and the most common ones were disliking exercise and no motivation. For exercise preferences, most respondents preferred a structured exercise program with flexibility in terms of when and where the exercise could be conducted. Light or moderate intensity exercise for 10–30 minutes with a frequency of 1–2 times a week was desired the most among the respondents. Conclusion: In conclusion, personal and environmental factors play important roles in motivating or hampering female undergraduates to exercise, and a structured program was the preferred mode of exercise of these respondents. A new exercise module was designed based on this needs assessment with a 70% acceptance rate among the participants. N-Methyl-3, 4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDMA), or ecstasy is a recreational drug of abuse. It is a synthetic substance that affects the body's systems, which its mechanism of action and treatment should be more investigated. MDMA provides an immediate enjoyable feeling by stimulating the release of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Unfortunately, abnormal regulation of the brain neurotransmitters, as well as the increased oxidative stress causes damage to the brain neurons after the MDMA exposure. Only a few studies have been done regarding its treatment. Thus, the treatment of MDMA complications should be further explored mainly by targeting its mechanism of action in the neurotransmitter systems. Hence, this study presents a short review regarding the recent findings on the role of neurotransmitters to cause MDMA neurotoxicity. The results will be useful for future research in elucidating the potential treatment based on the targeted mechanisms to treat the neurotoxic effects of MDMA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Since 1978, Rohingya refugees have fled from their native nation, Myanmar to escape ethnic prosecution. They comprise of the Muslim minority ethnic group originating from the Rakhine state in Myanmar. In many host countries, they may have difficulty to access health care services. The Islamic Association of Malaysia (IMAM) Response and Relief Team (IMARET) have taken many initiatives to provide healthcare services to the refugees through their volunteer-led mobile clinics. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the utilisation of drugs among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients visiting this clinic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study among Rohingya refugees with T2DM that visited the IMARET mobile clinics from August until November 2017. Convenient sampling method was used. Data were collected through patient's interview, review of the patient's prescriptions and their HbA1c readings. Results: A total of 29 T2DM patients were included in this study. The majority were female (75.9%) and aged below 65 years old (75.9%). The most commonly prescribed anti-diabetic agent was metformin (72.2%), followed by glibenclamide (22.2%) and gliclazide (5.6%). Metformin as a monotherapy (31%) was the most frequent treatment prescribed. More patients had controlled T2DM (62.1%) compared to those with uncontrolled DM. We found 90.9% of patients who were treated according to the recommended DM guidelines achieved a good blood glucose control (p=0.02). Conclusion: In Rohingya refugees having T2DM who were treated in the IMARET mobile clinic, the percentage having good control DM status is higher in those whose treatment regimen adheres to the clinical practice guidelines.
