"Objective:" Evaluate college students' perception of the effectiveness of different vending machine (VM) interventions for improving snack selection. "Participants:" A total of 194 college students with the age of =18 years. "Method:" A cross-sectional survey among a purposive sampling near VM. "Results:" Most students use VM frequently or occasionally (63.4%). The intervention perceived as most helpful for choosing healthier snacks was labeling (on or near) which snack is healthy (score 3.83/5) followed by lowering the price of healthy options (score 3.33/5), while the least helpful was having posters nearby explaining which snacks are healthier (2.35/5). Participants suggested including snacks high in protein (58.8%) and low in sugar (56.2%). Most would like to see more healthy options in VM (83.5%) and will purchase them if available (67%). "Conclusions:" Lowering the price for healthy snacks and including labels to indicate which are healthy may be the interventions to test for improving snack intake among college students.

Background and Aims Crohn's disease [CD] is characterised by the expansion of mesenteric adipose tissue [MAT], named creeping fat [CF], which seems to be directly related to disease activity. Adipose-stem cells [ASCs] isolated from the CF of patients with CD are extremely pro-inflammatory, which persists during disease remission. We hypothesised that the dysfunctional ASCs in CD accumulate epigenetic modifications triggered by the inflammatory environment, that could serve as molecular markers. Methods Genome-wide DNA methylome and transcriptome profiling were performed in ASCs isolated from MAT biopsies of patients with active and inactive disease and from non-Crohn's disease patients [non-CD]. A validation cohort was used to test the main candidate genes via quantitative polymerase chain reaction in other fat depots and immune cells. Results We found differences in DNA methylation and gene expression between ASCs isolated from patients with CD and from non-CD subjects, but we found no differences related to disease activity. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed that oxidative stress and immune response were significantly enriched in active CD, and integration analysis identified MAB21L2 , a cell fate-determining gene, as the most affected gene in CD. Validation analysis confirmed the elevated gene expression of MAB21L2 in MAT and in adipose tissue macrophages in active CD. We also found a strong association between expression of the calcium channel subunit gene CACNA1H and disease remission, as CACNA1H expression was higher in ASCs and MAT from patients with inactive CD, and correlates negatively with C-reactive protein in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Conclusion We identified a potential gene signature of CD in ASCs obtained from MAT. Integration analysis highlighted two novel genes demonstrating a negative correlation between promoter DNA methylation and transcription: one linked to ASCs in CD [ MAB21L2 ] and the other [ CACNA1H ] related to disease remission. Background: Flares of autoimmune conditions can happen after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and after COVID-19 vaccines. Patients and clinicians confront difficult decisions about vaccine safety when considering efforts to balance the risks of disease exacerbation after vaccines versus the protection that vaccines offer to potential serious life-threatening complications of COVID-19 infection. Objective: To examine symptom flares after COVID-19 infection and vaccines in the case of a form of autoimmune encephalitis that primarily affects children and young adults (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome [PANS] / pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections [PANDAS]). Method: Across-sectional study that used a survey distributed through PANS/PANDASgroups, organizations, and clinics. Results: Surveys were completed by 496 parents and/or caregivers of children with PANS/PANDAS. Among the children reported to have had a COVID-19 infection (n = 178), 43% reported severe flares of PANS/PANDAS symptoms, 23% reported mild flares, and 30% reported no symptom flares. Among those who had received COVID-19 vaccines (n = 181), 65% observed no changes in PANS/PANDAS symptoms after the vaccine, 19% reported mild flares, and 15% reported severe flares. Paired sample t-tests showed that, after COVID-19 infections, children with PANS/PANDAS were significantly more likely to experience a severe symptom flare than a mild flare or no change in symptoms. In contrast, after receiving COVID-19 vaccines, children were significantly more likely to experience no change in PANS/PANDAS symptoms than to endure a mild or severe symptom flare. In addition, children who recovered from PANS/PANDAS were significantly more likely to have no symptom change versus children who were managing the condition, both after COVID-19 infection (92% versus 25%) and vaccine receipt (100% versus 66%). Conclusion: These results support COVID-19 vaccination for most individuals with PANS/PANDAS given that the frequencies of symptom flares and setbacks after COVID-19 infection were significantly higher than after the COVID-19 vaccine. Nonetheless, further studies are needed to fully assess the risk-benefit balance and to provide a more individualized approach to disease prevention in people with immune vulnerabilities. Most of the studies in identifying the factors contributing to high academic performance of students focus on both traditional and blended learning environments. This study explores the online engagement behaviours of high-performing online students. Three years of data derived from students' online activities and academic performance across six computing courses was analysed. Our findings reveal a continuity of high-performance among students who excel in online introductory programming courses, extending their success to subsequent online computing courses. Furthermore, we establish a positive association between programming experience and improved performance. High-performing students exhibit engagement levels that exceed their peers by at least 100% in online formative learning activities, with particular emphasis on forum participation and quiz contribution. This study also looked into the predictive potential of past academic performances in anticipating future achievements. It demonstrated a predictive accuracy of 75% for programming courses and 91% for non-programming ones. When combined with student engagement data, the predictive accuracy for programming courses increases to 81%. This approach requires substantial data until at least week 7 or 8 of a 10-week course, potentially delaying intervention until the latter stage of the course. To address this, exploring models exclusively reliant on engagement data is recommended. Our research offers actionable insights for educators, enabling them to identify critical content design elements that enhance academic performance across diverse student profiles, fostering improved online engagement and narrowing performance gaps. Moreover, this study calls for a re-evaluation of learning analytics tools within educational institutions to better understand and enhance student behaviours and patters, ultimately improving the overall online learning experience. In manufacturing, different costs must be considered when selecting the optimal manufacturing configuration. Costs include manufacturing costs, material costs, labor costs, and overhead costs. Optimal manufacturing configurations are those that minimize production criteria, such as costs, production speed, and flexibility, while still meeting the required production levels and quality standards. To find the optimal manufacturing configuration, manufacturers often use a combination of traditional techniques, e.g., mathematical modeling, simulation, and optimization, to evaluate the tradeoffs between different cost factors and identify configurations that provide the best balance between cost and performance. However, these techniques may require long development and simulation time, and/or may require expert knowledge. This paper presents a method for selecting the optimal manufacturing configuration, focusing on cost optimization, using a reinforcement learning (RL) approach for sequential decision-making. The proposed method involves developing a RL environment, requiring lower development and simulation times than traditional techniques, that captures the incurred costs, recurring costs, production rates, and setup times of manufacturing configurations. The problem is then solved using the Proximal Policy Optimization algorithm to identify the configuration that minimizes costs while still meeting the required production levels and quality standards. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through a machining process planning case study with multiple cost factors and production constraints. In particular, the machining process plan was developed for an industry-relevant product prototype. The results show that the proposed method can find solutions that are robust to stochastic noise, providing valuable insights for manufacturers looking to optimize manufacturing operations. The development of bioinsecticides as an alternative to synthetic insecticides can benefit the economy of exporting and importing countries, family farming, production of high-quality commodities, food security, quality of life, and the natural environment. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of microencapsulated extracts of Azadirachta indica A. Juss on Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith and their persistence in the plant under semi-field conditions. The fresh seeds of A. indica , collected in Brazil, were separated for the preparation of the microencapsulated dry extract (MDE) according to criteria registered in the patent. Lethal concentrations for S. frugiperda were determined using a dose response curve. The treatments were compared: MDE, control and positive control based on azadirachtin, evaluating mortality and growth inhibition. There was a significant difference in mortality between the treatments tested. The lethal concentrations LC 50 and LC 95 , expressed in azadirachtin for the bioinsecticide, were 194.98 and 630.95 ppm, respectively. The growth inhibition of S. frugiperda was above 98 % in the treatments, except for the control. The MDE presented lethal times LT 50 and LT 90 lower than the other treatments (lethal time LT 50 = 2.79 d; lethal time LT 90 = 3.97 d). The MDE of A. indica seeds was effective in controlling S. frugiperda up to the fifth instar and is considered as slightly persistent to persistent depending on environmental conditions and irrigation, based on IOBC/WPRS parameters. The MDE has the potential to be a phytosanitary product approved for use in organic agriculture and with greater effectiveness in controlling S. frugiperda compared to similar pesticides. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been used in several fields of dentistry to improve tissue healing. However, PRF from glass tubes results in a limited number of small membranes, increasing clinical difficulty and work time. The aim of this study was to evaluate cell and platelet amounts and biomechanical strength of PRF-giant membranes produced from plastic tubes without additives. The investigators designed an ex vivo study, to compare 3 different centrifugation protocols for obtaining PRF: 700 × g /12 minutes (leukocyte and PRF [L-PRF]), 350 × g /14 minutes (GM350), and 60-700 × g more than 15 minutes total (progressive PRF [PRO-PRF]). We collected blood samples from 5 volunteers aged 25-54 years, over 3 different time periods (triplicate and paired study). From each venipuncture, 4 mL of blood was collected in vacutainers with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and approximately 104 mL in 12 plastic tubes without additives, which were separated into 3 groups, as per the centrifugation protocols (n = 5): L-PRF, GM350, and PRO-PRF. The PRF from the tubes of the same protocol was aspirated and 9 mL were placed in polylactic acid (PLA) forms and 3 mL were placed in a glass receptacle. The membranes from PLA forms were tested for tensile strength and the membranes from glass receptacles were evaluated by histomorphometry, while platelets and leukocytes were counted for those in tubes with EDTA. Statistical analyses were performed using Shapiro-Wilk normality test and then a one-way repeated measures analysis followed by Tukey multiple comparisons test (α < 0.05). In tensile analyses, PRO-PRF (0.85 ± 0.23 N) showed a significantly higher maximum breaking strength than L-PRF (0.61 ± 0.26 N, P =.01) and GM350 (0.58 ± 0.23 N, P <.01). The histomorphometry revealed no significant statistical difference in cell counts between the groups (P =.52). Furthermore, there was no significant difference between the leukocyte (P =.25) and platelet counts (P =.59) in whole blood between the groups. The progressive protocol (PRO-PRF) enabled the production of PRF giant membranes with greater tensile strength and adequate cell distribution.
