We adopt a Bayesian X-ray spectral approach to investigate the accretion properties of unobscured (⁠|$20\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 22$|⁠) and obscured (⁠|$22\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 24$|⁠) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to shed light on the orientation versus evolution scenarios for the origin of the obscuring material. For a sample of 3882 X-ray-selected AGN from the Chandra COSMOS Legacy, AEGIS, and CDFS extragalactic surveys, we constrain their stellar masses, |$M_\star$|⁠ , intrinsic X-ray luminosities, |$L_{\rm X}$|⁠ , obscuring column densities, |$N_{\rm H}$|⁠ , and specific accretion rates |$\lambda \propto L_{\rm X}/M_\star$|⁠. By combining these observables within a Bayesian non-parametric approach, we infer, for the first time, the specific accretion rate distribution (SARD) of obscured and unobscured AGN to |$z\approx 3$|⁠ , i.e. the probability of a galaxy with mass |$M_\star$| at redshift z hosting an AGN with column density |$N_{\rm H}$| and specific accretion rate |$\lambda$|⁠. Our findings indicate that (1) both obscured and unobscured SARDs share similar shapes, shifting towards higher accretion rates with redshift, (2) unobscured SARDs exhibit a systematic offset towards higher |$\lambda$| compared to obscured SARD for all redshift intervals, (3) the obscured AGN fraction declines sharply at |$\log \lambda _{\rm break} \sim -2$| for |$z \lt 0.5$|⁠ , but shifts to higher |$\lambda$| values with increasing redshift, (4) the incidence of AGN within the theoretically unstable blow-out region of the |$\lambda -N_{\rm H}$| plane increases with redshift. These observations provide compelling evidence for AGN 'downsizing' and radiation-regulated nuclear-scale obscuration with an increasing host galaxy contribution towards higher redshifts. Context. Radio-excess active galactic nuclei (radio-AGNs) are essential to our understanding of both the physics of black hole (BH) accretion and the interaction between BHs and host galaxies. Recent deep and wide radio continuum surveys have made it possible to study radio-AGNs down to lower luminosities and up to higher redshifts than previous studies, and are providing new insights into the abundance and physical origin of radio-AGNs. Aims. Here we focus on the cosmic evolution, physical properties, and AGN-host galaxy connections of radio-AGNs selected from a total sample of ∼400 000 galaxies at 0 < z < 4 in the GOODS-N and COSMOS fields. Methods. Combining the deep radio continuum data with multi-band, de-blended far-infrared, and submillimeter data, we were able to identify 983 radio-AGNs out of the entire galaxy sample through radio excess relative to the far-infrared–radio relation. Results. We studied the cosmic evolution of 1.4 GHz radio luminosity functions (RLFs) for both star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and radio-AGNs, which can be well described by a pure luminosity evolution of L⋆ ∝ (1 + z)−0.34 × z + 3.57 and a pure density evolution of Φ⋆ ∝ (1 + z)−0.77 × z + 2.69, respectively. We derived the turnover luminosity, above which the number density of radio-AGNs surpasses that of SFGs. We show that this crossover luminosity increases with increasing redshifts, from 1022.9 W Hz−1 at z ∼ 0 to 1025.2 W Hz−1 at z ∼ 4. At the full redshift range of 0 < z < 4, we further derive the probability (pradio) of SFGs and quiescent galaxies (QGs) hosting a radio-AGN, as a function of stellar mass (M⋆), radio luminosity (LR), and redshift (z), which yields pradio ∝ (1+z)3.08 M⋆1.06 LR−0.77 p radio ∝ (1 + z) 3.08 M ⋆ 1.06 L R − 0.77 $ p_{\mathrm{radio}} \propto (1+z)^{3.08}\, M_{\star}^{1.06}\, L_{\mathrm{R}}^{-0.77} $ for SFGs, and pradio ∝ (1+z)2.47 M⋆1.41 LR−0.60 p radio ∝ (1 + z) 2.47 M ⋆ 1.41 L R − 0.60 $ p_{\mathrm{radio}} \propto (1+z)^{2.47}\ M_{\star}^{1.41}\, L_{\mathrm{R}}^{-0.60} $ for QGs, respectively. The quantitative relation for the probabilities of galaxies hosting a radio-AGN indicates that radio-AGNs in QGs prefer to reside in more massive galaxies with higher LR than those in SFGs. The origin of radio emission in different populations of radio-quiet quasars is relatively unknown, but recent work has uncovered various drivers of increased radio-detection fraction. In this work, we pull together three known factors: optical colour (g − i), C  iv distance (a proxy for L / L Edd), and whether or not the quasar contains broad absorption lines (BALQSOs) which signify an outflow. We use SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) DR14 spectra along with the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 and find that each of these properties have an independent effect. BALQSOs are marginally more likely to be radio-detected than non-BALQSOs at similar colours and L / L Edd, moderate reddening significantly increases the radio-detection fraction and the radio detection increases with L / L Edd above a threshold for all populations. We test a widely used simple model for radio wind shock emission and calculate energetic efficiencies that would be required to reproduce the observed radio properties. We discuss interpretations of these results concerning radio-quiet quasars more generally. We suggest that radio emission in BALQSOs is connected to a different physical origin than the general quasar population since they show different radio properties independent of colour and C  iv distance. The origin of obscuration in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is still an open debate. In particular, it is unclear what drives the relative contributions to the line-of-sight column densities from galaxy-scale and torus-linked obscuration. The latter source is expected to play a significant role in Unification Models, while the former is thought to be relevant in both Unification and Evolutionary models. In this work, we make use of a combination of cosmological semi-analytic models and semi-empirical prescriptions for the properties of galaxies and AGN, to study AGN obscuration. We consider a detailed object-by-object modelling of AGN evolution, including different AGN light curves (LCs), gas density profiles, and also AGN feedback-induced gas cavities. Irrespective of our assumptions on specific AGN LC or galaxy gas fractions, we find that, on the strict assumption of an exponential profile for the gas component, galaxy-scale obscuration alone can hardly reproduce the fraction of log (N H/cm−2) ≥ 24 sources at least at z ≲ 3. This requires an additional torus component with a thickness that decreases with luminosity to match the data. The torus should be present in all evolutionary stages of a visible AGN to be effective, although galaxy-scale gas obscuration may be sufficient to reproduce the obscured fraction with 22 < log (N H/cm−2) < 24 (Compton-thin, CTN) if we assume extremely compact gas disc components. The claimed drop of CTN fractions with increasing luminosity does not appear to be a consequence of AGN feedback, but rather of gas reservoirs becoming more compact with decreasing stellar mass. In the standard quasar model, the accretion disc obscuration is due to the canonical dusty torus. Here, we argue that a substantial part of the quasar obscuration can come from the interstellar medium (ISM) when the quasars are embedded in compact starbursts. We use an obscuration-unbiased sample of 578 infrared (IR) quasars at z ≈ 1–3 and archival Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array submillimetre host galaxy sizes to investigate the ISM contribution to the quasar obscuration. We calculate star formation rates (SFR) and ISM column densities for the IR quasars and a control sample of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) not hosting quasar activity and show that: (1) the quasar obscured fraction is constant up to |$\rm SFR\approx 300 \: {\rm M}_{\odot } \: yr^{-1}$|⁠ , and then increases towards higher SFR, suggesting that the ISM obscuration plays a significant role in starburst host galaxies, and (2) at |$\rm SFR\gtrsim 300 \: {\rm M}_{\odot } \: yr^{-1}$|⁠ , the SMGs and IR quasars have similarly compact submillimetre sizes (⁠|$R_{\rm e}\approx 0.5{\!-\!}3\,\mathrm{ kpc}$|⁠) and consequently, the ISM can heavily obscure the quasar, even reaching Compton-thick (⁠|$N_{\rm H}\gt 10^{24} \rm \: cm^{-2}$|⁠) levels in extreme cases. Based on our results, we infer that |${\approx} 10{\!-\!}30~{{ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the IR quasars with |$\rm SFR\gtrsim 300 \: {\rm M}_{\odot } \: yr^{-1}$| are obscured solely by the ISM. We perform X-ray spectral analyses to derive the characteristics (e.g., column density, X-ray luminosity) of ≈10,200 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey, which was designed to investigate the growth of supermassive black holes across a wide dynamic range of cosmic environments. Using physical torus models (e.g., Borus02) and a Bayesian approach, we uncover 22 representative Compton-thick (CT; N H > 1.5 × 1024 cm−2) AGN candidates with good signal-to-noise ratios as well as a large sample of 136 heavily obscured AGNs. We also find an increasing CT fraction (f CT) from low (z < 0.75) to high (z > 0.75) redshift. Our CT candidates tend to show hard X-ray spectral shapes and dust extinction in their spectral energy distribution fits, which may shed light on the connection between AGN obscuration and host-galaxy evolution. We analyze the physical properties of eight X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and one candidate protoquasar system (ADF22A1) in the z = 3.09 SSA22 protocluster by fitting their X-ray-to-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using our SED-fitting code, Lightning (https://www.github.com/rafaeleufrasio/lightning). We recover star formation histories (SFHs) for seven of these systems which are well fit by composite stellar population plus AGN models. We find indications that four out of nine of the SSA22 AGN systems we study have host galaxies below the main sequence, with SFR/SFRMS ≤ −0.4. The remaining SSA22 systems, including ADF22A1, are consistent with obscured supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth in star-forming galaxies. We estimate the SMBH accretion rates and masses, and compare the properties and SFHs of the nine protocluster AGN systems with X-ray-detected AGN candidates in the Chandra Deep Fields (CDF), finding that the distributions of SMBH growth rates, star formation rates (SFRs), SMBH masses, and stellar masses for the protocluster AGNs are consistent with field AGNs. We constrain the ratio between the sample-averaged SSA22 SMBH mass and CDF SMBH mass to <1.41. While the AGNs are located near the density peaks of the protocluster, we find no statistically significant trends between the AGN or host-galaxy properties and their location in the protocluster. We interpret the similarity of the protocluster and field AGN populations together with existing results as suggesting that the protocluster and field AGNs coevolve with their hosts in the same ways, while AGN-triggering events are more likely in the protocluster. A complete census of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is a prerequisite for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes across cosmic time. A significant challenge towards this goal is the whereabouts of heavily obscured AGN that remain uncertain. This paper sets new constraints on the demographics of this population by developing a methodology that combines X-ray spectral information with priors derived from multiwavelength observations. We select X-ray AGN in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey and fit their |$2.2\!-\!500\, \mu \mathrm{m}$| spectral energy distributions with galaxy and AGN templates to determine the mid-infrared (⁠|$6\, \mu \mathrm{m}$|⁠) luminosity of the AGN component. Empirical correlations between X-ray and |$6\, \mu \mathrm{m}$| luminosities are then adopted to infer the intrinsic accretion luminosity at X-rays for individual AGN. This is used as prior information in our Bayesian X-ray spectral analysis to estimate physical properties, such as line-of-sight obscuration. Our approach breaks the degeneracies between accretion luminosity and obscuration that affect X-ray spectral analysis, particularly for the most heavily obscured (Compton-Thick) AGN with low photon counts X-ray spectra. The X-ray spectral results are then combined with the selection function of the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey to derive the AGN space density and a Compton-Thick fraction of |$21.0^{+16.1}_{-9.9}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at redshifts z < 0.5. At higher redshift, our analysis suggests upper limits to the Compton-Thick AGN fraction of |$\lesssim 40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. These estimates are at the low end of the range of values determined in the literature and underline the importance of multiwavelength approaches for tackling the challenge of heavily obscured AGN demographics. To understand the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) phenomenon and their impact on the evolution of galaxies, a complete AGN census is required; however, finding heavily obscured AGNs is observationally challenging. Here we use the deep and extensive multiwavelength data in the COSMOS field to select a complete sample of 578 infrared (IR) quasars (⁠|$L_{\rm AGN,IR}\gt 10^{45}\rm \: erg\: s^{-1}$|⁠) at z < 3, with minimal obscuration bias, using detailed UV-to-far-IR spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We complement our SED constraints with X-ray and radio observations to further investigate the properties of the sample. Overall, 322 of the IR quasars are detected by Chandra and have individual X-ray spectral constraints. From a combination of X-ray stacking and |$L_{\rm 2-10\rm \,kev}$| – |$L_{\rm 6\: \mu m}$| analyses, we show that the majority of the X-ray faint and undetected quasars are heavily obscured (many are likely Compton thick), highlighting the effectiveness of the mid-IR band to find obscured AGNs. We find that 355 (≈61 per cent) IR quasars are obscured (⁠|$N_{\rm H}\gt 10^{22}\rm \: cm^{-2}$|⁠) and identify differences in the average properties between the obscured and unobscured quasars: (1) obscured quasars have star formation rates ≈3 times higher than unobscured systems for no significant difference in stellar mass and (2) obscured quasars have stronger radio emission than unobscured systems, with a radio-loudness parameter |$\approx 0.2 \rm \: dex$| higher. These results are inconsistent with a simple orientation model but in general agreement with either extreme host-galaxy obscuration towards the obscured quasars or a scenario where obscured quasars are an early phase in the evolution of quasars. The observed optical colors of quasars are generally interpreted in one of two frameworks: unified models that attribute the color to the random orientation of the accretion disk along the line of sight, and evolutionary models that invoke connections between quasar systems and their environments. We test these schemas by probing the dark matter halo environments of optically selected quasars as a function of g âˆ' i optical color by measuring the two-point correlation functions of ∼0.34 million eBOSS quasars as well as the gravitational deflection of cosmic microwave background photons around ∼0.66 million XDQSO photometric quasar candidates. We do not detect a trend of halo bias with optical color through either analysis, finding that optically selected quasars at 0.8 < z < 2.2 occupy halos of characteristic mass M h ∼ 3 Ă— 1012 h âˆ'1 M ⊙ regardless of their color. This result implies that a quasar’s large-scale halo environment is not strongly connected to its observed optical color. We also confirm the findings of fundamental differences in the radio properties of red and blue quasars by stacking 1.4 GHz FIRST images at their positions, suggesting the observed differences cannot be attributed to orientation. Instead, the differences between red and blue quasars likely arise on nuclear-galactic scales, perhaps owing to reddening by a nuclear dusty wind. Finally, we show that optically selected quasars’ halo environments are also independent of their r âˆ' W2 opticalâ€"infrared colors, while previous work has suggested that mid-infrared-selected obscured quasars occupy more massive halos. This is the first paper in a series aimed at modeling the black hole (BH) mass function, from the stellar to the intermediate to the (super)massive regime. In the present work, we focus on stellar BHs and provide an ab initio computation of their mass function across cosmic times; we mainly consider the standard, and likely dominant, production channel of stellar-mass BHs constituted by isolated single/binary star evolution. Specifically, we exploit the state-of-the-art stellar and binary evolutionary code SEVN , and couple its outputs with redshift-dependent galaxy statistics and empirical scaling relations involving galaxy metallicity, star formation rate and stellar mass. The resulting relic mass function as a function of the BH mass m• features a rather flat shape up to m• ≈ 50 M⊙ and then a log-normal decline for larger masses, while its overall normalization at a given mass increases with decreasing redshift. We highlight the contribution to the local mass function from isolated stars evolving into BHs and from binary stellar systems ending up in single or binary BHs. We also include the distortion on the mass function induced by binary BH mergers, finding that it has a minor effect at the high-mass end. We estimate a local stellar BH relic mass density of ρ• ≈ 5 × 107M⊙ Mpc−3, which exceeds by more than two orders of magnitude that in supermassive BHs; this translates into an energy density parameter Ω• ≈ 4 × 10−4, implying that the total mass in stellar BHs amounts to ≲1% of the local baryonic matter. We show how our mass function for merging BH binaries compares with the recent estimates from gravitational wave observations by LIGO/Virgo, and discuss the possible implications for dynamical formation of BH binaries in dense environments like star clusters. We address the impact of adopting different binary stellar evolution codes (SEVN and COSMIC) on the mass function, and find the main differences to occur at the high-mass end, in connection with the numerical treatment of stellar binary evolution effects. We highlight that our results can provide a firm theoretical basis for a physically motivated light seed distribution at high redshift, to be implemented in semi-analytic and numerical models of BH formation and evolution. Finally, we stress that the present work can constitute a starting point to investigate the origin of heavy seeds and the growth of (super)massive BHs in high-redshift star-forming galaxies, that we will pursue in forthcoming papers. We examine possible environmental sources of the enhanced star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in the z = 3.09 SSA22 protocluster using Hubble WFC3 F160W (∼1.6 μm) observations of the SSA22 field, including new observations centered on eight X-ray selected protocluster AGN. To investigate the role of mergers in the observed AGN and star formation enhancement, we apply both quantitative (Sérsic-fit and Gini–M20) and visual morphological classifications to F160W images of protocluster Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the fields of the X-ray AGN and z ∼ 3 field LBGs in SSA22 and GOODS-N. We find no statistically significant differences between the morphologies and merger fractions of protocluster and field LBGs, though we are limited by small number statistics in the protocluster. We also fit the UV-to-near-IR spectral energy distributions of F160W-detected protocluster and field LBGs to characterize their stellar masses and star formation histories. We find that the mean protocluster LBG is a factor of ∼2 times more massive and more attenuated than the mean z ∼ 3 field LBG. We take our results to suggest that ongoing mergers are not more common among protocluster LBGs than field LBGs, though protocluster LBGs appear to be more massive. We speculate that the larger mass of the protocluster LBGs contributes to the enhancement of SMBH mass and accretion rate in the protocluster, which in turn drives the observed protocluster AGN enhancement. In active galactic nuclei (AGNs), fluorescent Fe Kα (iron) line emission is generally interpreted as originating from obscuring material around a supermassive black hole on the scale of a few parsecs. However, recent Chandra studies indicate the existence of iron line emission extending to kiloparsec scales in the host galaxy. The connection between iron line emission and large-scale material can be spatially resolved directly only in nearby galaxies, but could be inferred in more distant AGNs by a connection between line emission and star-forming gas and dust that is more extended than the parsec-scale torus. Here we present the results from a stacking analysis and X-ray spectral fitting performed on sources in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) 7 Ms observations. From the deep stacked spectra, we select sources with stellar mass at 0.5 < z < 2, obtaining 25 sources with high-infrared (IR) luminosity (star formation rate, SFRFIR ≥ 17 M☉ yr−1) and 32 sources below this threshold. We find that the equivalent width (EW) of the iron line EW(Fe) is a factor of three higher with 3σ significance for high-IR luminosity measured from Herschel observations, indicating a connection between iron line emission and star-forming material on galaxy scales. We show that there is no significant dependence of the EW(Fe) on M* or X-ray luminosity, suggesting that the reflection of AGN X-ray emission over large scales in their host galaxies may be widespread. The masses of supermassive black holes at the centres of local galaxies appear to be tightly correlated with the mass and velocity dispersions of their galactic hosts. However, the local M bh– M star relation inferred from dynamically measured inactive black holes is up to an order-of-magnitude higher than some estimates from active black holes, and recent work suggests that this discrepancy arises from selection bias on the sample of dynamical black hole mass measurements. In this work, we combine X-ray measurements of the mean black hole accretion luminosity as a function of stellar mass and redshift with empirical models of galaxy stellar mass growth, integrating over time to predict the evolving M bh– M star relation. The implied relation is nearly independent of redshift, indicating that stellar and black hole masses grow, on average, at similar rates. Matching the de-biased local M bh– M star relation requires a mean radiative efficiency ε ≳ 0.15, in line with theoretical expectations for accretion on to spinning black holes. However, matching the 'raw' observed relation for inactive black holes requires ε ∼ 0.02, far below theoretical expectations. This result provides independent evidence for selection bias in dynamically estimated black hole masses, a conclusion that is robust to uncertainties in bolometric corrections, obscured active black hole fractions, and kinetic accretion efficiency. For our fiducial assumptions, they favour moderate-to-rapid spins of typical supermassive black holes, to achieve ε ∼ 0.12–0.20. Our approach has similarities to the classic Soltan analysis, but by using galaxy-based data instead of integrated quantities we are able to focus on regimes where observational uncertainties are minimized. Predicting future brain signal is highly sought-after, yet difficult to achieve. To predict the future phase of cortical activity at localized ECoG and MEG recording sites, we exploit its predominant, large-scale, spatiotemporal dynamics. The dynamics are extracted from the brain signal through Fourier analysis and principal components analysis (PCA) only, and cast in a data model that predicts future signal at each site and frequency of interest. The dominant eigenvectors of the PCA that map the large-scale patterns of past cortical phase to future ones take the form of smoothly propagating waves over the entire measurement array. In ECoG data from 3 subjects and MEG data from 20 subjects collected during a self-initiated motor task, mean phase prediction errors were as low as 0.5 radians at local sites, surpassing state-of-the-art methods of within-time-series or event-related models. Prediction accuracy was highest in delta to beta bands, depending on the subject, was more accurate during episodes of high global power, but was not strongly dependent on the time-course of the task. Prediction results did not require past data from the to-be-predicted site. Rather, best accuracy depended on the availability in the model of long wavelength information. The utility of large-scale, low spatial frequency traveling waves in predicting future phase activity at local sites allows estimation of the error introduced by failing to account for irreducible trajectories in the activity dynamics. Author summary: Prediction is an important step in scientific progress, often leading to real-world applications. Prediction of future brain activity could lead to improvements in detecting driver and pilot error or real-time brain testing using transcranial magnetic stimulation. Previous studies have either supposed that the 'noise' level in the cortex is high, setting the prediction bar rather low; or used localized measurements to predict future activity, with modest success. A long-held but controversial hypothesis is that the cortex is best characterized as a multi-scale dynamic structure, in which the flow of activity at one scale, say, the area responsible for motor control, is inextricably tied to activity at smaller and larger scales, for example within a cortical column and the whole cortex. We test this hypothesis by analyzing large-scale traveling waves of cortical activity. Like waves arriving on a beach, the ongoing wave motion allows better prediction of future activity compared to monitoring the local rise and fall; in the best cases the future wave cycle is predicted with as low as 20° average error angle. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to regulate star formation inside their host galaxies through "AGN feedback". We summarise our on-going study of luminous AGN (z ∼ 0.2−3; LAGN,bol 1043 erg s−1), which is designed to search for observational signatures of feedback by combining observed star-formation rate (SFR) measurements from statistical samples with cosmological model predictions. Using the EAGLE hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, in combination with our Herschel + ALMA surveys, we show that – even in the presence of AGN feedback – we do not necessarily expect to see any relationships between average galaxy-wide SFRs and instantaneous AGN luminosities. We caution that the correlation with stellar mass for both SFR and AGN luminosity can contribute to apparent observed positive trends between these two quantities. On the other hand, the EAGLE simulations, which reproduce our observations, predict that a signature of AGN feedback can be seen in the wide specific SFR distributions of all massive galaxies (not just AGN hosts). Overall, whilst we can not rule out that AGN have an immediate small-scale impact on in-situ star-formation, all of our results are consistent with a feedback model where galaxy-wide in-situ star formation is not rapidly suppressed by AGN, but where the feedback likely acts over a longer timescale than a single AGN episode. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are powered by the accretion of material onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH) and are among the most luminous objects in the Universe. However, the huge radiative power of most AGN cannot be seen directly, as the accretion is hidden behind gas and dust that absorb many of the characteristic observational signatures. This obscuration presents an important challenge for uncovering the complete AGN population and understanding the cosmic evolution of SMBHs. In this review, we describe a broad range of multiwavelength techniques that are currently being employed to identify obscured AGN, and we assess the reliability and completeness of each technique. We follow with a discussion of the demographics of obscured AGN activity, explore the nature and physical scales of the obscuring material, and assess the implications of obscured AGN for observational cosmology. We conclude with an outline of the prospects for future progress from both observations and theoretical models, and we highlight some of the key outstanding questions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In spontaneous, stimulus-evoked, and eye-movement evoked EEG, the oscillatory signal shows large scale, dynamically organized patterns of phase. We investigated eye-movement evoked patterns in free-viewing conditions. Participants viewed photographs of natural scenes in anticipation of a memory test. From 200 ms intervals following saccades, we estimated the EEG phase gradient over the entire scalp, and the wave activity, i.e. the goodness of fit of a wave model involving a phase gradient assumed to be smooth over the scalp. In frequencies centered at 6.5 Hz, large-scale phase organization occurred, peaking around 70 ms after fixation onset and taking the form of a traveling wave. According to the wave gradient, most of the times the wave spreads from the posterior-inferior to anterior-superior direction. In these directions, the gradients depended on the size and direction of the saccade. Wave propagation velocity decreased in the course of the fixation, particularly in the interval from 50 to 150 ms after fixation onset. This interval corresponds to the fixation-related lambda activity, which reflects early perceptual processes following fixation onset. We conclude that lambda activity has a prominent traveling wave component. This component consists of a short-term whole-head phase pattern of specific direction and velocity, which may reflect feedforward propagation of visual information at fixation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
