1. Evidence for and against Banning Mobile Phones in Schools: A Scoping Review

Abstract

Public opinions are divided on the relative benefits versus harms of allowing mobile phones in schools. When debating the consequences of mobile phones in schools, politicians often argue that students' use of mobile phones distract from their learning, increase cyberbullying and lead to poor mental health outcomes. We conducted a scoping review of the global literature, followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and pre-registered our protocol with the Open Science Framework (OSF). Our search and screening process identified 22 studies that met our inclusion criteria and shed light on our research questions: "whether mobile phone use in schools impacts academic outcomes, mental health and wellbeing and cyberbullying." We found an absence of randomized controlled trials with evidence resting on a small number of studies with different designs, samples, operational definitions of mobile phone bans (i.e. partial, or complete bans) and outcome measures, making reconciliation of findings challenging. Nonetheless, we provide a synthesis of the latest evidence for decision-makers tasked with deciding for or against mobile phone bans in schools. Directions for future research are provided and practical implications for schools are discussed.

Abstract

We report the first results of DarkSide-50, a direct search for dark matter operating in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) and searching for the rare nuclear recoils possibly induced by weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The dark matter detector is a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber with a (46.4±0.7) kg active mass, operated inside a 30 t organic liquid scintillator neutron veto, which is in turn installed at the center of a 1 kt water Cherenkov veto for the residual flux of cosmic rays. We report here the null results of a dark matter search for a (1422±67) kgd exposure with an atmospheric argon fill. This is the most sensitive dark matter search performed with an argon target, corresponding to a 90% CL upper limit on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section of 6.1×10−44 cm2 for a WIMP mass of 100 Gev/c2. 5. A Model of Transformational Leadership in the Organisational Culture of Preschool Institution

Abstract

The culture of an organisation refers to the common and dominant values and norms, as well as the beliefs and perceptions of its employees. Organisational culture influences employee behaviour and attitudes. The culture of the institution predetermines the tone of the environment, which can affect employee satisfaction. The basic premise of this paper is established in the connection between the characteristics of the leader and the transformational model of leadership in the organisational culture of the preschool institution. This research aims to determine whether the assessments and self-assessments of leaders and preschool teachers differ in the frequency of using the transformational leadership style and to determine the relationship between the transformational leadership style and the leader's personality traits. The research was conducted in a private Croatian preschool institution, which consists of 10 kindergartens. A total of 51 participants in 9 kindergartens participated in the research. The study used a quantitative research approach. The research results show that preschool teachers and leaders do not differ significantly in estimates of the frequency of application of the transformational leadership style and that there is a significant correlation between some characteristics of the leader and the transformational model of preschool leadership.

Further, we examined whether daily variations in cortisol levels could be attributed to the impact of negative thoughts/emotions rather than diving experience. Altogether 15 recreational and 14 military male divers participated in the dive wherein stress responses were measured by anxiety measures (DASS-21 and STAI) and cortisol salivary concentrations. The results of factor analysis and principal component analysis demonstrated acceptable construct validity and internal consistency of both questionanires. Recreational and military divers did not differ significantly in the proportion of negative thoughts and emotions, while recreational divers had significantly higher levels of cortisol release after awakening and immediately before/after diving, indicating their more intense stress responses. A significant interaction between daily variations in cortisol secretion and negative emotions indicated a greater importance of emotions in response to diving stress rather than diving experience. Accordingly, using a multiple regression analysis showed that more pre-diving negative emotions predicted higher levels of pre-diving anxiety and depression as well as more cortisol release. More negative thoughts predicted higher levels of depressive symptoms, while belonging to a group of recreational divers was a significant predictor of higher pre-diving anxiety. This study points to the importance of considering cognitive and emotional experiences, particularly in recreational divers, for the purpose of prevention of negative psychophysiological stress responses prior to diving.

Abstract

The rapid proliferation of germinal center (GC) B cells requires metabolic reprogramming to meet energy demands, yet these metabolic processes are poorly understood. By integrating metabolomic and transcriptomic profiling of GC B cells, we identified that asparagine (Asn) metabolism was highly up-regulated and essential for B cell function. Asparagine synthetase (ASNS) was up-regulated after B cell activation through the integrated stress response sensor GCN2. Conditional deletion of Asns in B cells impaired survival and proliferation in low Asn conditions. Removal of environmental Asn by asparaginase or dietary restriction compromised the GC reaction, impairing affinity maturation and the humoral response to influenza infection. Furthermore, metabolic adaptation to the absence of Asn required ASNS, and oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondrial homeostasis, and synthesis of nucleotides were particularly sensitive to Asn deprivation. These findings demonstrate that Asn metabolism acts as a key regulator of B cell function and GC homeostasis. By metabolic profiling in murine GC B cells, Yazicioglu et al. identify that the amino acid asparagine (Asn) was up-regulated. Asn metabolism was required to regulate GC B cell metabolic homeostasis and GC function, including antibody affinity maturation and humoral immune response. Function f : V → { − 1 , 1 , 2 } is the signed Roman domination function (SRDF) if and only if it satisfies the following conditions: (i) for each vertex v ∈ V of graph G the sum of the values assigned to v and all its neighbors is at least 1 and (ii) each vertex v ∈ V for which f (v) = − 1 , must be adjacent to at least one vertex u such that f (u) = 2. The minimum weight ∑ v ∈ V f (v) of all SRDFs on graph G is defined as signed Roman domination number ( γ sR (G)). Definition of the signed total Roman domination function (STRDF) follows the definition of SRDF with a minor change where condition (i) considers the sum of all values assigned to all neighbors of v to be at least one, for each vertex v. The minimum weight ∑ v ∈ V f (v) of all STRDFs on graph G is called signed total Roman domination number ( γ stR (G)). In this paper, we deal with the calculation of the signed (total) Roman domination numbers on a few classes of planar graphs from the literature. We give proofs for the exact values of the numbers γ sR (A n) and γ sR (R n) as well as the numbers γ stR (S n) and γ stR (T n). Abstract

Background: Noonan syndrome (NS) is a congenital genetic disorder with a prevalence of 1 in 1000 to 2500 live births, and is characterized by distinctive facial features, short stature, chest deformities, and congenital heart disease. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of specific genetic mutations and their impact on cardiovascular and other outcomes in NS. Methods: We conducted a retrospective clinical study of 25 pediatric patients diagnosed with NS at two institutions: The Mother and Child Health Care Institute of Serbia and the Clinic for Children Diseases, University Clinical Center of the Republic of Srpska. Patients underwent whole-exome sequencing (WES) to identify genetic mutations. Clinical data, including cardiovascular manifestations, psychomotor development, and stature, were analyzed in relation to mutation types. Results: The cohort comprised 60% male and 40% female patients, with a median age at diagnosis of 7.2 years. Cardiovascular abnormalities were present in 88% of patients. Mutations in PTPN11 were most commonly associated with pulmonary valve stenosis (PVS), while RAF1 mutations were prevalent in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). No significant association was found between cardiac disease and delayed psychomotor development (p = 0.755), even though the likelihood ratio showed significance in that regard (p = 0.018). Short stature was observed in 48% of patients but was not significantly correlated with genetic type of disease, presence of cardiac disease, or developmental delay. Conclusions: The study confirms the high prevalence of cardiovascular manifestations in NS and highlights genotype–phenotype correlations. While cardiac abnormalities are common, their impact on psychomotor development and stature is less clear. 36. Evidence for and against banning mobile phones in schools: A scoping review.

Abstract

Public opinions are divided on the relative benefits versus harms of allowing mobile phones in schools. When debating the consequences of mobile phones in schools, politicians often argue that students' use of mobile phones distract from their learning, increase cyberbullying and lead to poor mental health outcomes. We conducted a scoping review of the global literature, followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and pre-registered our protocol with the Open Science Framework (OSF). Our search and screening process identified 22 studies that met our inclusion criteria and shed light on our research questions: whether mobile phone use in schools impacts academic outcomes, mental health and wellbeing and cyberbullying. We found an absence of randomized controlled trials with evidence resting on a small number of studies with different designs, samples, operational definitions of mobile phone bans (i.e. partial, or complete bans) and outcome measures, making reconciliation of findings challenging. Nonetheless, we provide a synthesis of the latest evidence for decision-makers tasked with deciding for or against mobile phone bans in schools.
