This article adheres to UN guidelines concerning the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) which aim to improve the lives of the older population. The objective of this study is to show how social dance with artistic-scenic purposes for a socially vulnerable group of older adults (third and fourth age) contributes to active ageing from social and health perspectives. The sample comes from a social group for the over-60s years and forms part of an artistic-community project in which participant observation has been carried out for five years. To obtain more data from the sample group, an "ad hoc" measurement instrument is developed based on a specific literature review on the topic. The results show that dance, group, and stage performance are a vital driver for members. The analysis shows that individual perspectives are higher than group perspectives. The research provides evidence that social dance groups improve motor expressiveness, stimulate the ability to think, memorize and create, among other aspects.

Background: Idiopathic Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (IRBD) is recognized as the prodromal stage of the alpha-Synucleinopathies. Although some studies have addressed the characterization of brain structure in IRBD, little is known about its progression. Objective: The present work aims at further characterizing gray matter progression throughout IRBD relative to normal aging and investigating how these changes are associated with cognitive decline. Methods: Fourteen patients with polysomnography-confirmed IRBD and 18 age-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent neuropsychological, olfactory, motor, and T1-weighted MRI evaluation at baseline and follow-up. We compared the evolution of cortical thickness (CTh), subcortical volumes, smell, motor and cognitive performance in IRBD and HC after a mean of 1.6 years. FreeSurfer was used for CTh and volumetry preprocessing and analyses. The symmetrized percent of change (SPC) of the CTh was correlated with the SPC of motor and neuropsychological performance. Background: Resting-state functional MRI has been proposed as a new biomarker of prodromal neurodegenerative disorders, but it has been poorly investigated in the idiopathic form of rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (IRBD), a clinical harbinger of subsequent synucleinopathy. Particularly, a complex-network approach has not been tested to study brain functional connectivity in IRBD patients. Objectives: The aim of the current work is to characterize resting-state functional connectivity in IRBD patients using a complex-network approach and to determine its possible relation to cognitive impairment. Method: Twenty patients with IRBD and 27 matched healthy controls (HC) underwent resting-state functional MRI with a 3T scanner and a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Abstract One of the most captivating properties of polaritons is their capacity to confine light at the nanoscale. This confinement is even more extreme in two-dimensional (2D) materials. 2D polaritons have been investigated by optical measurements using an external photodetector. However, their effective spectrally resolved electrical detection via far-field excitation remains unexplored. This hinders their exploitation in crucial applications such as sensing, hyperspectral imaging, and optical spectrometry, banking on their potential for integration with silicon technologies. Herein, we present the electrical spectroscopy of polaritonic nanoresonators based on a high-quality 2D-material heterostructure, which serves at the same time as the photodetector and the polaritonic platform. Subsequently, we electrically detect these mid-infrared resonators by near-field coupling to a graphene pn-junction. The nanoresonators simultaneously exhibit extreme lateral confinement and high-quality factors. This work opens a venue for investigating this tunable and complex hybrid system and its use in compact sensing and imaging platforms.

Objective. To determine potential mitochondrial and oxidative alterations in colon biopsies from idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) subjects. Methods. Colonic biopsies from 7 iRBD subjects, 9 subjects with clinically diagnosed PD, and 9 healthy controls were homogenized in 5% w/v mannitol. Citrate synthase (CS) and complex I (CI) were analyzed spectrophotometrically. Oxidative damage was assessed either by lipid peroxidation, through malondialdehyde and hydroxyalkenal content by spectrophotometry, or through antioxidant enzyme levels of superoxide dismutase-2 (SOD2), glutathione peroxidase-1 (Gpx1), and catalase (CAT) by western blot. The presence of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions was assessed by long PCR and electrophoresis. Results. Nonsignificant trends to CI decrease in both iRBD (45.69±18.15; 23% decrease) and PD patients (37.57±12.41; 37% decrease) were found compared to controls (59.51±12.52, p: NS). Lipid peroxidation was maintained among groups (iRBD: 27.46±3.04, PD: 37.2±3.92, and controls: 31.71±3.94; p: NS). Antioxidant enzymes SOD2 (iRBD: 2.30±0.92, PD: 1.48±0.39, and controls: 1.09±0.318) and Gpx1 (iRBD 0.29±0.12, PD: 0.56±0.33, and controls: 0.38±0.16) did not show significant differences between groups. CAT was only detected in 2 controls and 1 iRBD subject. One iRBD patient presented a single mtDNA deletion.

Introduction: The purpose of our study is to describe 4 cases of sexsomnia, a form of parasomnia characterised by sexual behaviour during sleep. Methods: Clinical history and video-polysomnography recordings from patients diagnosed with sexsomnia in the Multidisciplinary Sleep Unit at Hospital Clínic in Barcelona. Results: Three men and one woman between 28 and 43 years of age reported sexual behaviours during sleep with progression times ranging from 9 months to 7 years. Episodes consisted of masturbation without seeking the participation of a sleeping partner (2 cases) and attempts at sexual intercourse with inappropriate and uncharacteristic vocalisations and behaviours (3 cases). The frequency of the episodes ranged from 4 isolated episodes to 2-3 per week. Patients were amnestic of these events and surprised by their partners’ accounts of their behaviour. Medical histories revealed that 1 patient was a somnambulist, 2 had confusional arousals, and 1 experienced somniloquy. Video-polysomnography did not disclose sexual behaviours during sleep but revealed sleep apnoea in 2 cases and periodic leg movements in sleep in another. The only patient treated with clonazepam reported decreased frequency of both confusional arousals and sexsomnia episodes. Conclusions: Sexsomnia occurs in young adults and is characterised by masturbation and inappropriate attempts at achieving sexual intercourse followed by total amnesia of the events. It can be associated with other parasomnias such as sleepwalking and confusional arousals. Other sleep disorders, including sleep apnoea and periodic leg movement disorder, may trigger episodes of sexsomnia. Resumen: Introducción: El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es describir 4 casos de sexsomnia, una parasomnia caracterizada por conductas sexuales durante el sueño. Método: Historia clínica y registro videopolisomnográfico de pacientes identificados en la unidad multidisciplinaria del sueño del Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Resultados: Tres varones y una mujer entre 28 y 43 años de edad referían conductas sexuales durante el sueño de entre 9 meses y 7 años de evolución. Consistían en la masturbación sin buscar la participación de la pareja, que dormía en la misma cama (2 casos), e intentar el coito con vigorosidad conductual y verbal inapropiada e inhabitual (3 casos). La frecuencia era variable entre 4 únicos episodios y 2-3 semanales. Los pacientes presentaban amnesia completa de los eventos y sorpresa cuando se les explicaba lo que habían hecho. Había antecedentes de sonambulismo (un caso), despertares confusos (2 casos) y somniloquia (un caso). Los registros polisomnográficos con vídeo no detectaron conductas sexuales pero registraron apneas (2 casos) y movimientos periódicos de las piernas (un caso). En el único paciente en que se probó clonacepam la frecuencia de la sexsomnia y los despertares confusos disminuyó. Conclusión: La sexsomnia aparece en el adulto joven, consiste en intentar consumar de forma inapropiada el coito o masturbarse durante el sueño, con amnesia posterior de lo ocurrido. Puede coexistir con otras parasomnias, como sonambulismo y despertares confusos. Otros trastornos del sueño, como las apneas y los movimientos periódicos de las piernas, podrían desencadenar los episodios de sexsomnia. Resumen: El presente artículo se plantea como una propedéutica al estudio del cómic ensayo o ensayo gráfico, desde su nacimiento con autoconsciencia hasta la actualidad. Con la voluntad de trazar una genealogía de obras significativas, el artículo incide en aquellos aspectos formales relacionados con estrategias de montaje que resultan relevantes en la forma-ensayo a partir de desarrollos de investigación en el campo del cine. Además, y de manera central, se propone una metodología, basada sobre todo en la iconología de Aby Warburg para el estudio del ensayo como fórmula didáctica y de transmisión de la tradición en el contexto de las formas de no ficción en el cómic. Abstract: This paper serves as an introduction to the study of the graphic essay or comic essay, tracing its evolution from its self-aware inception to the present day. With the intention of establishing a genealogy of significant works, the article emphasizes formal aspects related to montage strategies that are relevant to the essay form, drawing from research developments in the field of cinema. This article draws on the stimulus–organism–response (SOR) model to understand the role of negative emotions in the anti-brand behaviors of online users who consume snow sports brands. To this end, both the online social influence and the mediating effect of symbolic incongruence (stimulus) on the generation of negative emotions (anger, stress, frustration, fear, boredom and sadness) (organism), and how these influence the formation of negative customer brand engagement (nCBE) (response), are analyzed. The study also analyses the moderating effects of “level of expertise”, this makes it possible to capture differences in behaviors based on the profile of the users in each of the proposed relationships. Questionnaire responses of 400 ski and snowboard users over 18 years of age were analyzed using a quantitative methodology. The results obtained have important theoretical and practical implications, since they confirm that online social influences have both a direct and indirect (mediating) effect on negative emotions, which positively affects the nCBE of online users of snow sports brands. Significant differences in behavior based on experience level (moderation effect) were also found. The study proposes useful practical recommendations applicable in online environments that the extreme sports industry could use to neutralize/avoid highly detrimental consequences.

Abstract We investigated the biomarker profile of neurodegeneration, Alzheimer’s and Lewy body pathology in the CSF of 148 polysomnography-confirmed patients with isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (IRBD), a condition that precedes Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We assessed misfolded α-synuclein (AS) by RT-QuIC assay, amyloid-beta peptides (Aβ42 and Aβ40), phosphorylated tau (p-tau), and total tau (t-tau) by CLEIA and neurofilament light chain (NfL) by ELISA. We detected AS in 75.3% of patients, pathologically decreased Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio in 22.5%, increased p-tau in 15.5%, increased t-tau in 14.9%, and elevated NfL in 14.7%. After a mean follow-up of 2.48 ± 2.75 years, 47 (38.1%) patients developed PD (n = 24) or DLB (n = 23). Abstract Objective: The aim of this study is to compare stigmatizing attitudes, reported and intended behavior, and knowledge of mental illness between university students and the general population. Methods: An online cross-sectional observational study was conducted. The survey included sociodemographic data and validated stigma questionnaires (the Attribution Questionnaire [AQ-27], the Reported and Intended Behaviour Scale [RIBS], and the Mental Health Knowledge Schedule [MAKS]). Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, and multiple regression modeling were employed to analyze the data. Results: A total of 506 participants completed the survey, including 226 (44.7%) university students (61.1% women), and 280 (55.3%) individuals from the general population (69.3% women). For both groups, women and individuals who had lived with someone with mental health problems exhibited more positive attitudes (p < 0.05). University students reported greater knowledge of mental illness (p < 0.05) than the general population. After controlling for covariates, university students only scored higher than the general population in the blame factor of the AQ-27 (p < 0.05). Additionally, older participants from both groups exhibited higher levels of stigmatizing attitudes compared to those of a younger age. Conclusion: These findings suggest that university students exhibit similar levels of stigmatizing attitudes to the general population. Among both groups, female sex, older age, previous contact with individuals with mental illness, and greater knowledge of mental health are all associated with less stigma toward people with mental illness. Tailored interventions grounded in contact with mental illness have the potential to help reduce stigmatizing attitudes within both groups.

Objective: To present five patients with zolpidem-induced sleep-related behavioural disorders. Methods: Evaluation using a questionnaire designed to study sleep behaviours and past medical history in all patients. Results: The patients performed complex actions while sleep-walking (telephoning, house-cleaning, feeding the dog or waxing their legs). Inappropriate feeding behaviour with excessive food intake during the night were reported by all patients. All had weight gain, which in one patient led to extreme obesity. Two patients suffered injuries (knife cuts and burns) related to attempting to prepare food. One patient took a laxative. Conclusion: Withdrawal of zolpidem resolved the behaviours in all cases, highlighting the importance of an adequate diagnosis of this side effect. Resumen: Objetivo: Presentar cinco pacientes con trastornos conductuales durante el sueño, sin conciencia posterior de los mismos, inducidos por zolpidem. Métodos: Evaluación con un cuestionario diseñado para estudiar las características y las conductas realizadas durante el sueño por todos los pacientes. Resultados: Las conductas realizadas por los pacientes fueron muy variadas (telefonear, limpieza y labores del hogar, alimentar al perro o depilarse), aunque en todos los pacientes se recogieron conductas alimentarias inapropiadas. Todos sufrieron una ganancia pon-deral importante, debido a su preferencia por alimentos hipercalóricos durante los episodios, que en una de las pacientes desembocó en una obesidad extrema. Dos de los pacientes sufrieron lesiones (cortes con cuchillo y quemaduras) en relación con el intento de elaboración de platos. Un paciente llegó a ingerir un laxante. Conclusiones: La retirada de zolpidem resolvió de forma inmediata las conductas anormales durante el sueño en todos los casos. Esto subraya la importancia de diagnosticar adecuadamente este efecto secundario. Este artículo explora cómo medios de comunicación españoles abordan la ética de las relaciones sexuales e influyen en la construcción y percepción de la sexualidad de la audiencia más joven -denominada generación Z o zoomers- a través de sus redes sociales. Esta observación coincide con el proceso legislativo de la ‘Ley del solo sí es sí’, un cambio normativo de relevancia social y mediática que pone el consentimiento en el punto de mira de las relaciones tras el incremento de agresiones sexuales en grupo de hombres contra una mujer. A través de una metodología cualitativa, basada en análisis del contenido y el discurso, se exploran 13585 contenidos publicados por 13 medios de comunicación en Instagram y TikTok. Los resultados evidencian que la cobertura mediática se ciñe a polémicas políticas y temporales, sin pretensión de profundizar y contextualizar en los diferentes aspectos que envuelven las relaciones sexuales y el consentimiento. Se concluye que, a pesar del potencial de las nuevas narrativas audiovisuales de ambas redes sociales para la cobertura informativa e interpretativa, en la actualidad los medios no asumen una función educomunicativa en torno a la sexualidad. Sin embargo, los contenidos de carácter divulgativo e inclusivos por lo que respecta al género, basados en una argumentación razonada, son los que despiertan mayor interés entre las audiencias más jóvenes, manifestado en un mayor número de “me gusta” y visualizaciones.

ObjectiveIn 2022, several cases of ocular hypertension (OHT) related to EyeCee One preloaded IOLs were reported. The aim of this study was to determine the presurgical and surgical variables associated with this response.Methods and analysisAn analysis was conducted on patients who underwent isolated cataract surgery between September 2022 and December 2022 at the Hospital Universitario del Henares. The influence of potential factors was studied using the Kruskal–Wallis test and multiple regression analysis.ResultsA total of 353 cataract surgeries were included in the study. No significant differences between the different IOLs were found related to a change in the IOP on the first postoperative day (p = 0.395), but the change in the IOP after 1 month was higher in the EyeCee One group (p = 0.016). Approximately 6.1% of the patients who received EyeCee One had an IOP increase greater than 10 mmHg, compared to only 0.8% of the patients who received other IOLs. The odds ratio (OR) of experiencing an IOP increase greater than 10 mmHg in the EyeCee One group at the 1-month visit was 7.99 (1.52–41.99). The multiple regression analysis showed that receiving the EyeCee One lens was associated with a 2-mmHg increase in IOP. A previous history of glaucoma or OHT was not associated with greater IOP. Two patients in the EyeCee One group developed severe visual loss.ConclusionPatients who received the EyeCee One IOL experienced significant increases in IOP at the 1-month visit. A small number of patients might suffer visual loss secondary to the rise in IOP.

Abstract Background Different mosquito control strategies have been implemented to mitigate or prevent mosquito-related public health situations. Modern mosquito control largely relies on multiple approaches, including targeted, specific treatments. Given this, it is becoming increasingly important to supplement these activities with rapid and mobile diagnostic capacities for mosquito-borne diseases. We aimed to create and test the applicability of a rapid diagnostic system for West Nile virus that can be used under field conditions. Methods In this pilot study, various types of adult mosquito traps were applied within the regular mosquito monitoring activity framework for mosquito control. Then, the captured specimens were used for the detection of West Nile virus RNA under field conditions with a portable qRT-PCR approach within 3–4 h. Then, positive samples were subjected to confirmatory RT-PCR or NGS sequencing in the laboratory to obtain genome information of the virus. We implemented phylogenetic analysis to characterize circulating strains. Results A total of 356 mosquito individuals representing 7 species were processed in 54 pools, each containing up to 20 individuals. These pools were tested for the presence of West Nile virus, and two pools tested positive, containing specimens from the Culex pipiens and Anopheles atroparvus mosquito species. As a result of subsequent sequencing, we present the complete genome of West Nile virus and Bagaza virus. Conclusions The rapid identification of infected mosquitoes is the most important component of quick response adulticide or larvicide treatments to prevent human cases. The conceptual framework of real-time surveillance can be optimized for other pathogens and situations not only in relation to West Nile virus. We present an early warning system for mosquito-borne diseases and demonstrate its application to aid rapid-response mosquito control actions. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) has a high prevalence in the Spanish pediatric population and is a precursor of carious lesions in teeth in which it is present. Although this pathology is included in the curricula of the Degree in Dentistry and the Training Cycle in Oral Hygiene in our country, the contents currently taught seem to be insufficient in relation to the level of knowledge that we have today about this condition. Methods A digital questionnaire of 18 questions was sent to a sample of 448 students attending the 4th and 5th year of the Degree in Dentistry and 2nd year of the Training Cycle in Oral Hygiene from different universities and vocational training centers in the Valencian Community. Descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis of the data was subsequently performed. Results Of the 290 questionnaires that were obtained, 53.8% were from students attending the 2nd year of a training course in oral hygiene and 46.2% were from students pursuing a degree in dentistry. Most of the respondents had heard about MIH (75.2%), mainly through master classes. However, most students had difficulties distinguishing MIH lesions from other lesions (58.3%). The degree of knowledge about MIH was greater among dental students in all the aspects evaluated: prevalence, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Of all the students, 83.8% were interested in increasing their training on MIH, especially in the areas of diagnosis and treatment. Conclusion The results of the present study justify the need to expand the content on MIH, both theoretical and practical, in the educational curricula of the Degree in Dentistry and Integrated Vocational Training Centers in Spain.

Today's learning ecologies stand out due to their variety, dynamism and mutability, demanding an observation that matches them. This paper focuses on emerging youth informal learning cultures, with the main objective of recognizing and characterizing a new figure in online social media: the studygrammer. Using questionnaires (N=256), discussion groups organized using Philips 66 (N=56) and Atlas.ti (thematic analysis), as well as participant observation, we analyzed: practices of academic use of social networks by Communication students outside the institutional environment, the opinion about the #Studygram community, and the analysis of profiles. The main results are centered on a proposed definition of the studygrammer: namely the student who works as a mentor and peer leader in Instagram's academic field. This profile not only shares notes (which stand out for their neatness and detailed aesthetics), but also conveys advice, support and experiences. In fact, studygrammers keep influencer genetics by prioritizing aesthetics and monetization in their publications. The conclusion is that the academic purpose adds exclusive characteristics to the community, where the visual code functions as a lingua franca between fields of study. In fact, studygrammers have followers from various academic backgrounds who seek "know-how" (management and planning of their own learning) as well as a fundamentally rational adherence.

BackgroundDespite efforts to prevent dating violence among adolescents, it remains a major problem with multiple negative consequences. Sexist beliefs, empathy, and assertiveness influence teen dating violence (TDV) with potential gender differences.Objectives(1) Determine gender disparities in TDV perpetration and victimization, including relational, verbal-emotional, and physical aspects, as well as roles; (2) Analyze gender variations in sexism, empathy, assertiveness, and their relationship with TDV; (3) Establish a predictive model of sexism in TDV with empathy and assertiveness as mediators for both genders.Participants and settingA sample of 862 secondary school students (50.2% females, 49.8% males; mean age: 14.1 years) from diverse regions in Spain participated.MethodsTDV was measured using the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory (CADRI) in a cross-sectional study. Sexism, empathy, and assertiveness were assessed using the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI), Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), and Assertiveness Inventory for Students Questionnaire (AISQ), respectively.ResultsFemales exhibited higher TDV perpetration, specifically verbal-emotional TDV. Males showed more relational TDV and hostile sexism, while no benevolent sexism differences were observed. Mediation models demonstrated sexism, assertiveness, and empathy as individual predictors of TDV, with varying mediation effects. Personal distress partially mediates the link between sexism and TDV perpetration or victimization in males, while practical personal ability mediates between sexism and TDV perpetration in females.ConclusionSexism predicts both perpetration and victimization in TDV, linked to empathy and assertiveness. Notably, specific dimensions of empathy and assertiveness mediate the connection between sexism and TDV, displaying gender-specific patterns. Preventive measures should consider personal distress in male perpetrators/victims and practical personal ability in female perpetrators.

This dataset gathers the initial formation and the evolution of water content and distribution, as well as water evacuation, within a lung-inspired PEM (proton exchange membrane) fuel cell with a 50 cm2 active area for various operating conditions such as cell pressure, relative humidity of the reactant (anode and cathode), temperature, and cell current density. Neutron imaging was used since it has been shown to be an effective technique for quantitative analysis of water distribution, obtaining the thickness of the water with the Lambert-Beer law, thus obtaining the numerical data that composes the tables and graphs in this dataset. A series of videos compiling the individual images obtained through neutron imaging, showing the water distribution evolution are presented. Numerical and graphical compilation of the amount of water in a cell through time in different regions of the cell and for a total of 10 experiments are provided. This dataset provides a deeper knowledge on the complex phenomena that liquid water is subjected to in fuel cells along time, as well as a basis for an experimental validation for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.

A dataset from experimental tests of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with an active area of approximately 50 cm2, parallel-serpentine channels and cross-flow field distribution between anode and cathode is presented. Tests were performed for four different gas inlet and outlet configurations. In particular, tests were performed for the original configuration, hydrogen inlet and outlet reversed, air inlet and outlet reversed, and hoses reversed for both gases. The operating conditions for all gas configurations were: pressure of 0.5 bar, temperature of 65 °C, anode and cathode relative humidity of 60 %, and anode and cathode stoichiometry of 1.3 and 2.5 respectively. The tests performed were the polarization curve (PC) for each gas configuration and the dynamic load cycles (FC-DLC) also for each hose position. A current density mapping (CDM) sensor, capable of measuring both the current density distribution and the temperature distribution inside the cell, was inserted into the fuel cell system during all tests. The use of the sensor during the experiments makes it possible to know how these distributions behave and to observe whether or not there is homogeneity in its measurements, thus verifying that the design of the flow channels is adequate and fulfilling its function. The results can be used to investigate and compare other bipolar plates and channel designs, or to compare with results from other test benches and environmental conditions.

An overview of the Armenian media system is presented from the perspective of media professionals. Interference with the media system by the political system is analysed and the health of the Armenian media system is explored in the context of its transition from a Soviet republic towards a liberal model. The international situation contextualises analysis (resurgence of Russia–West enmity and globalisation) as does Armenia’s troubled relationship with its neighbours: with Turkey due to the 1915 genocide and with Azerbaijan because of the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh. Relevant domestic affairs, such as the successful citizens’ mobilisation and the 2018 Velvet Revolution are also considered. The methodology used is based on in-depth interviews carried out in Yerevan (09/23) with 13 key informants; their answers are explored with content analysis using Hallin and Mancini’s dimensions. The study will serve to discuss how the media are used as tools of power and how the media system reproduces the political system (polarisation and individual ownership). We find that media is owned and/or controlled by political parties, and that the government controls public media but also part of the private sector through broadcasting licences and economic pressure. News media are not self-sustainable, thus, media economic dependence compromises its editorial independence, and very few media are independent. There is plurality, but highly polarised; there is no systematic censorship, but defamation fines reinforce journalists’ self-censorship; internet freedom is high but generates misinformation. Even so, there is professionalism, therefore there may yet be hope for the media if peace and the economy stabilise.

Epistasis among driver mutations is pervasive and explains relevant features of cancer, such as differential therapy response and convergence towards well-characterized molecular subtypes. Furthermore, a growing body of evidence suggests that tumor development could be hampered by the accumulation of slightly deleterious passenger mutations. In this work, we combined empirical epistasis networks, computer simulations, and mathematical models to explore how synergistic interactions among driver mutations affect cancer progression under the burden of slightly deleterious passengers. We found that epistasis plays a crucial role in tumor development by promoting the transformation of precancerous clones into rapidly growing tumors through a process that is analogous to evolutionary rescue. The triggering of epistasis-driven rescue is strongly dependent on the intensity of epistasis and could be a key rate-limiting step in many tumors, contributing to their unpredictability. As a result, central genes in cancer epistasis networks appear as key intervention targets for cancer therapy.

Introduction. Until now, there has been limited evidence, primarily from US cohorts, focusing on frailty as a patient-oriented outcome after liver transplantation (LT). Our study aimed to explore the relationship between pre- and post-LT frailty in a multicenter European cohort of outpatients with cirrhosis undergoing LT. Methods. We conducted a prospective analysis of data from 180 LT recipients recruited between 2018 and 2020 from 5 Spanish centers. Participants underwent objective and subjective frailty assessments using the Liver Frailty Index (LFI) and the Subjective Clinician Assessment (SCA) pretransplant and at 3- and/or 6-mo posttransplant. Results. The median pretransplant LFI was 3.9, showing minimal change at 3 mo (3.8; P = 0.331) and improvement at 6-mo post-LT (3.6; P = 0.001).
