Ice algae play a fundamental role in shaping polar marine ecosystems and biogeochemistry. This role can be investigated by field observations, however the influence of ice algae at the regional and global scales remains unclear due to limited spatial and temporal coverage of observations, and because ice algae are typically not included in current Earth System Models. To address this knowledge gap, we introduce a new model intercomparison project (MIP), referred to here as the Ice Algae Model Intercomparison Project phase 2 (IAMIP2). IAMIP2 is built upon the experience from its previous phase, and expands its scope to global coverage (both Arctic and Antarctic) and centennial timescales (spanning the mid-twentieth century to the end of the twenty-first century). Participating models are three-dimensional regional and global coupled sea ice–ocean models that incorporate sea-ice ecosystem components. These models are driven by the same initial conditions and atmospheric forcing datasets by incorporating and expanding the protocols of the Ocean Model Intercomparison Project, an endorsed MIP of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6). Doing so provides more robust estimates of model bias and uncertainty, and consequently advances the science of polar marine ecosystems and biogeochemistry. A diagnostic protocol is designed to enhance the reusability of the model data products of IAMIP2. Lastly, the limitations and strengths of IAMIP2 are discussed in the context of prospective research outcomes.

The international Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater 2010 (TEOS-10) defined the enthalpy and entropy of seawater, thus enabling the global ocean heat content to be calculated as the volume integral of the product of in situ density, ρ, and potential enthalpy, h0 (with reference sea pressure of 0 dbar). In terms of Conservative Temperature, Θ, ocean heat content is the volume integral of ρcp0Θ, where cp0 is a constant “isobaric heat capacity”. However, many ocean models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) as well as all models that contributed to earlier phases, such as CMIP5, CMIP3, CMIP2, and CMIP1, used EOS-80 (Equation of State – 1980) rather than the updated TEOS-10, so the question arises of how the salinity and temperature variables in these models should be physically interpreted, with a particular focus on comparison to TEOS-10-compliant observations. In this article we address how heat content, surface heat fluxes, and the meridional heat transport are best calculated using output from these models and how these quantities should be compared with those calculated from corresponding observations. We conclude that even though a model uses the EOS-80, which expects potential temperature as its input temperature, the most appropriate interpretation of the model's temperature variable is actually Conservative Temperature. This perhaps unexpected interpretation is needed to ensure that the air–sea heat flux that leaves and arrives in atmosphere and sea ice models is the same as that which arrives in and leaves the ocean model. We also show that the salinity variable carried by present TEOS-10-based models is Preformed Salinity, while the salinity variable of EOS-80-based models is also proportional to Preformed Salinity. These interpretations of the salinity and temperature variables in ocean models are an update on the comprehensive Griffies et al. (2016) paper that discusses the interpretation of many aspects of coupled Earth system models.

In recent years, significant trends toward earlier breakup and later freeze-up of sea ice in Hudson Bay have led to a considerable increase in shipping activity through the Port of Churchill, which is located in western Hudson Bay and is the only deep-water ocean port in the province of Manitoba. Therefore, understanding sea-level variability at the port is an urgent issue crucial for safe navigation and coastal infrastructure. Using tidal gauge data from the port along with an atmospheric reanalysis and Churchill River discharge, we assess environmental factors impacting synoptic to seasonal variability of sea level at Churchill. An atmospheric vorticity index used to describe the wind forcing was found to correlate with sea level at Churchill. Statistical analyses show that, in contrast to earlier studies, local discharge from the Churchill River can only explain up to 5 % of the sea-level variability. The cyclonic wind forcing contributes from 22 % during the ice-covered winter–spring season to 30 % during the ice-free summer–fall season due to cyclone-induced storm surges generated along the coast. Multiple regression analysis revealed that wind forcing and local river discharge combined can explain up to 32 % of the sea-level variability at Churchill. Our analysis further revealed that the seasonal cycle of sea level at Churchill appears to be impacted by the seasonal cycle in atmospheric circulation rather than by the seasonal cycle in local discharge from the Churchill River, particularly post-construction of the Churchill River diversion in 1977. Sea level at Churchill shows positive anomalies for September–November compared to June–August. This seasonal difference was also revealed for the entire Hudson Bay coast using satellite-derived sea-level altimetry. This anomaly was associated with enhanced cyclonic atmospheric circulation during fall, reaching a maximum in November, which forced storm surges along the coast. Complete sea-ice cover during winter impedes momentum transfer from wind stress to the water column, reducing the impact of wind forcing on sea-level variability. Expanding our observations to the bay-wide scale, we confirmed the process of wind-driven sea-level variability with (i) tidal-gauge data from eastern Hudson Bay and (ii) satellite altimetry measurements. Ultimately, we find that cyclonic winds generate sea-level rise along the western and eastern coasts of Hudson Bay at the synoptic and seasonal timescales, suggesting an amplification of the bay-wide cyclonic geostrophic circulation in fall (October–November), when cyclonic vorticity is enhanced, and Hudson Bay is ice-free.

The St. Lawrence Estuary connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The accepted view, based on summer conditions, is that the estuary's surface layer receives its nutrient supply from vertical mixing processes. This mixing is caused by the estuarine circulation and tides interacting with the topography at the head of the Laurentian Channel. During winter when ice forms, historical process-based studies have been limited in scope. Winter monitoring has been typically confined to vertical profiles of salinity and temperature as well as near-surface water samples collected from a helicopter for nutrient analysis. In 2018, however, the Canadian Coast Guard approved a science team to sample in tandem with its ice-breaking and ship escorting operations. This opportunistic sampling provided the first winter turbulence observations, which covered the largest spatial extent ever measured during any season within the St. Lawrence Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The nitrate enrichment from tidal mixing resulted in an upward nitrate flux of about 30 nmol m−2 s−1, comparable to summer values obtained at the same tidal phase. Further downstream, deep nutrient-rich water from the gulf was mixed into the subsurface nutrient-poor layer at a rate more than an order of magnitude smaller than at the head. These fluxes were compared to the nutrient load of the upstream St. Lawrence River. Contrary to previous assumptions, fluvial nitrate inputs are the most significant source of nitrate in the estuary. Nitrate loads from vertical mixing processes would only exceed those from fluvial sources at the end of summer when fluvial inputs reach their annual minimum.

Assimilation of weather radar measurements including radar reflectivity and radial wind data has been operational at the Deutscher Wetterdienst, with a diagonal observation error (OE) covariance matrix. For an implementation of a full OE covariance matrix, the statistics of the OE have to be a priori estimated, for which the Desroziers method has been often used. However, the resulted statistics consists of contributions from different error sources and are difficult to interpret. In this work, we use an approach that is based on samples for truncation error in radar observation space to approximate the representation error due to unresolved scales and processes (RE) and compare its statistics with the OE statistics estimated by the Desroziers method. It is found that the statistics of the RE help the understanding of several important features in the variances and correlation length scales of the OE for both reflectivity and radial wind data and the other error sources from the microphysical scheme, radar observation operator and the superobbing technique may also contribute, for instance, to differences among different elevations and observation types. The statistics presented here can serve as a guideline for selecting which observations to assimilate and for assignment of the OE covariance matrix that can be diagonal or full and correlated.

A recently developed energy flux diagnosis scheme, which incorporates a smooth connection between the tropical and subtropical zones, is used in the present study to investigate vertically propagating waves in the tropical Indian Ocean (IO) based on the result of a linear, continuously stratified ocean model driven by climatological wind forcing. This extended diagnosis reveals deep-reaching eastward energy fluxes at the equator which develop four times per year and are associated with equatorial Kelvin waves (KWs) generated by semiannual winds. The authors find that the downward transfer of wave energy is particularly deep in the southern Bay of Bengal (SBoB). This downward flux is attributed to off-equatorial Rossby waves and appears four times per year, maximizing its amplitude during November–December. Southwesterly winds in the Arabian Sea intensify eastward energy flux of KWs at mid-depth, which maximizes in amplitude in August. This is contrastive to KW energy flux at the surface which peaks in May. These mid-depth equatorial KW packets subsequently arrive at the eastern boundary of the IO and are diffracted poleward to produce downward energy flux in November and December detected in the SBoB.

A long simulation over the period 1901–2010 with an eddy-permitting ocean circulation model is used to study the variability of the upper layer circulation in the North Ionian Gyre (NIG) in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMed). The model is driven by the atmospheric forcing from the twentieth century reanalysis data set ERA-20C, ensuring a consistent performance of the model over the entire simulation period. The main modes of variability known in the EMed, in particular the decadal reversals of the NIG upper layer circulation observed since the late 1980s are well reproduced. We find that the simulated NIG upper layer circulation prior to the observational period is characterized by long-lasting cyclonic phases with weak variability during years 1910–1940 and 1960–1985, while in the in-between period (1940–1960) quasi-decadal NIG circulation reversals occur with similar characteristics to those observed in the recent decades. Our simulation indicates that the NIG upper layer circulation is rather prone to the cyclonic mode with occasional kicks to the anticyclonic mode. The coherent variability of the NIG upper layer circulation mode and of the Adriatic Deep Water (AdDW) outflow implies that atmospheric forcing triggering strong AdDW formation is required to kick the NIG into an anticyclonic circulation 1–2 years later. A sensitivity experiment mimicking a cold winter event over the Adriatic Sea supports this hypothesis. Our simulation shows that it is the multi-decadal variability of the salinity in the Adriatic Sea that leads to periods where low salinity prevents strong AdDW formation events. This explains the absence of quasi-decadal NIG reversals during 1910–1940 and 1960–1985.

This special issue marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Liverpool Tidal Institute (LTI), one of a number of important scientific developments in 1919. The preface gives a brief history of how the LTI came about and the roles of its first two Directors, Joseph Proudman and Arthur Doodson. It also gives a short overview of the research on tides at the LTI through the years. Summaries are given of the 26 papers in the special issue. It will be seen that the topics of many of them could be thought of as providing a continuation of the research first undertaken at the LTI. Altogether, they provide an interesting snapshot of work on tides now being made by groups around the world.

Increased demand by dive tourists for high-quality underwater wreck sites requires managers to balance heritage conservation and tourism at these vulnerable sites to ensure quality diving experiences while protecting underwater cultural heritage. Integral to effective management is a comprehensive understanding of wreck diver characteristics, motivations, and attitudes. This paper reports the outcomes of an international survey of 724 wreck divers including demographics, dive experience, motivations to wreck dive and attitudes to underwater cultural heritage protection. Wreck divers are motivated to see historic shipwrecks, artefacts, and marine life. Most are generally supportive of management controls to protect underwater cultural heritage. Conceptual models of wreck divers’ motivations and attitudes were developed to illustrate nuanced complexities in motivations and attitudes, which can inform management strategies to support operational decisions and destination marketing.

Fish earstones, or otoliths, are inner ear structures that can be studied to determine a fish’s age and are a source of taxonomically informative data. In the present work, sagitta otoliths of the Yellowtail snapper (Lutjanus argentiventris) and the Red grouper (Hyporthodus acanthistius) were collected in the Colombian Pacific, and their key morphological features were studied. Otoliths of the Yellow tail snapper were distinctly concave by their distal surface, revealing features shared with species of its genus (Lutjanus). Red grouper otoliths were elliptic and compressed laterally by their proximal surface, bearing similarities to those of other Serranid species. Morphometric relationships between otolith size weight and whole fish size and weight were also studied. In Red groupers significant statistical morphometric relationships between otolith and body features were found via power regression models; successfully relating otolith length with total fish length, otolith weight with total fish length, otolith length with total fish weight, and otolith weight with total fish weight. No significant morphometric relationships were found for the Yellow snapper data. In both fish species, otolith transversal sections proved best to identify its internal features and to distinguish otolith growth rings, as a method for determining the specimen’s age.

In the past decade (2010–2019), the annual maximum typhoon storm surge (AMTSS) accounted for 46.6% of the total direct economic loss caused by marine disasters in Chinese mainland, but its prediction in advance is challenging. By analyzing records of 23 tide-gauge stations, we found that the AMTSSs in Shanghai, Zhejiang and Fujian show significant positive correlations with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). For the 1987–2016 period, the maximum correlation is achieved at Pingtan station, where correlation coefficient between the AMTSS and Niño-3.4 is 0.55. The AMTSS occurring in El Niño years are stronger than those in non-El Niño years by 9–35 cm in these areas. Further analysis suggests that a developing El Niño can greatly modulate the behaviors of Northwest Pacific typhoons. Strong typhoons tend to make landfall in southeast China with stronger intensities and northward shifted landfall positions. This study indicates that the modulation effect by ENSO may provide potential predictability for the AMTSS, which is useful for the early alert and reduction of storm surge damages.

Basal melting of Antarctic ice shelves accounts for more than half of the mass loss from the Antarctic ice sheet. Many studies have focused on active basal melting at ice shelves in the Amundsen–Bellingshausen seas and the Totten ice shelf, East Antarctica. In these regions, the intrusion of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the continental shelf is a key component for the localized intensive basal melting. Both regions have a common oceanographic feature: southward deflection of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current brings CDW toward the continental shelves. The physical setting of the Shirase Glacier tongue (SGT) in Lützow-Holm Bay corresponds to a similar configuration on the southeastern side of the Weddell Gyre in the Atlantic sector. Here, we conduct a 2–3 km resolution simulation of an ocean–sea ice–ice shelf model using a recently compiled bottom-topography dataset in the bay. The model can reproduce the observed CDW intrusion along the deep trough. The modeled SGT basal melting reaches a peak in summer and a minimum in autumn and winter, consistent with the wind-driven seasonality of the CDW thickness in the bay. The model results suggest the existence of an eastward-flowing undercurrent on the upper continental slope in summer, and the undercurrent contributes to the seasonal-to-interannual variability in the warm water intrusion into the bay. Furthermore, numerical experiments with and without fast-ice cover in the bay demonstrate that fast ice plays a role as an effective thermal insulator and reduces local sea ice formation, resulting in much warmer water intrusion into the SGT cavity.

Introduction. This manuscript discusses the verification of wind fields from the NCEP-CFSR reanalysis data and the COASTOX model for calculating the fields of coastal currents, which is part of the hydrodynamic model of currents and wind waves in the Kola Bay. Materials and methods. The comparison of the calculation results with the measurement data was carried out based on both a graphical comparison of the time curves of the analyzed parameters, and in the form of statistical processing results, with the construction of regression relationships between the measured and calculated wind and current characteristics. Results. The correctness of the results obtained in the calculations using numerical models has been evaluated. To verify the wind fields from the NCEP-CFSR reanalysis, they were compared with the wind measurement data obtained from the HMS Murmansk, Polyarnoe, and Teriberka. High values of the correlation coefficient were obtained, which confirm the validity of using the NCEP-CFSR reanalysis data as the input data of the hydrodynamic model. For comparison with observations, the COASTOX model simulated currents in the Kola Bay under the influence of tidal forces and atmospheric forcing for a period of 195 days, from August 1, 2015 to February 11, 2016. The results obtained demonstrate that the current model correctly reproduces the reversal character currents in the middle knee of the Kola Bay and predicts changes in sea level quite accurately. Conclusions. The study shows that the hydrodynamic model of the Kola Bay solves the problem of a reliable forecast of the wave and current regime in the design of port facilities.

We examine the role of zonal Ekman transport along the coast of Senegal on 30 August 2015 when the tropical disturbance associated with Tropical Cyclone Fred was located to the west of Senegal, causing considerable coastal damage in the southern Senegal–Gambia domain (south of Dakar, Senegal). Ten-meter winds from three Weather Research and Forecast model simulations were used to estimate zonal Ekman transport, when the maximum values were found on 30 August. These simulations are in agreement with limited coastal observations showing increasing southerly wind speeds during 30 August but overestimated relative to the three coastal stations. The strong meridional winds translate into increased zonal Ekman transport to the coast of Senegal on 30 August and are likely responsible for some coastal flooding. Ekman transport along the coast contributes significantly to the water-level variations during swell events. The use of a coupled ocean model will improve the estimates of Ekman transport along the Guinea-Senegalese coast. The observed damage suggests that artificial and natural barriers (mangroves) should be strengthened to protect coastal communities in Senegal.

International audience; he goal of this work presented in a two-companion paper is to pave the way for reliably assessing the risks of damage to buildings on the shore, induced by the detonation of large-charge historical ordnance (i.e., countermining) in variable shallow water environments. Here, we focus on the impact of the marine environment, more specifically the unconsolidated sedimentary layer, on detonation-induced seismo-acoustic wave propagation.We rely on a multidisciplinary cross-study including real data obtained within the framework of a countermining campaign, and numerical simulations of the seismo-acoustic propagation using a spectral-element method.We first develop a strategy relying on physical insights into the different kind of waves that can propagate in a coastal environment, to provide clues for a computational cost reduction. The geological surveys and the hydroacoustic measurements provide input sedimentary basins favor a local wave-amplitude amplification and a frequency shift toward the low-frequency domain. However, the seismo-acoustic waves are globally attenuated during their propagation because of intrinsic attenuation and geometrical spreading, which generally prevents any large damage to nearby buildings on the shore.

For efficiency surveying fishery resource, the authors developed the scanner which measure the target shape at once time. The scanner based on the structured light method irradiated the laser patter coded on De Bruijn for high resolution the measurement under water. Variability of surface water masses of the Laptev and the East Siberian seas in August–September 2018 is studied using in situ and satellite data. In situ data were collected during the ARKTIKA-2018 expedition and then complemented with satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST), salinity (SSS), sea surface height, wind speed, and sea ice concentration. The estimation of SSS fields is challenging in high-latitude regions, and the precision of soil moisture and ocean salinity (SMOS) SSS retrieval is improved by applying a threshold on SSS weekly error. For the first time in this region, the validity of DMI (Danish Meteorological Institute) SST and SMOS SSS products is thoroughly studied using ARKTIKA-2018 expedition continuous thermosalinograph measurements and conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) casts. They are found to be adequate to describe large surface gradients in this region. Surface gradients and mixing of the river and the sea water in the ice-free and ice-covered areas are described with a special attention to the marginal ice zone at a synoptic scale. We suggest that the freshwater is pushed northward, close to the marginal ice zone (MIZ) and under the sea ice, which is confirmed by the oxygen isotope analysis. The SST-SSS diagram based on satellite estimates shows the possibility of investigating the surface water mass transformation at a synoptic scale and reveals the presence of river water on the shelf of the East Siberian Sea. The Ekman transport is calculated to better understand the pathway of surface water displacement on the shelf and beyond.

This article describes the development and ocean forecast evaluation of an atmosphere–ocean coupled prediction system for the Maritime Continent (MC) domain, which includes the eastern Indian and western Pacific oceans. The coupled system comprises regional configurations of the atmospheric model MetUM and ocean model NEMO at a uniform horizontal resolution of 4.5 km × 4.5 km, coupled using the OASIS3-MCT libraries. The coupled model is run as a pre-operational forecast system from 1 to 31 October 2019. Hindcast simulations performed for the period 1 January 2014 to 30 September 2019, using the stand-alone ocean configuration, provided the initial condition to the coupled ocean model. This paper details the evaluations of ocean-only model hindcast and 6 d coupled ocean forecast simulations. Direct comparison of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface height (SSH) with analysis, as well as in situ observations, is performed for the ocean-only hindcast evaluation. For the evaluation of coupled ocean model, comparisons of ocean forecast for different forecast lead times with SST analysis and in situ observations of SSH, temperature, and salinity have been performed. Overall, the model forecast deviation of SST, SSH, and subsurface temperature and salinity fields relative to observation is within acceptable error limits of operational forecast models. Typical runtimes of the daily forecast simulations are found to be suitable for the operational forecast applications.

The Beaufort Gyre (BG), the largest Arctic Ocean freshwater reservoir, has drastically increased its liquid freshwater content by 40% in the past two decades. If released within a short period, the excess freshwater could potentially impact the large-scale ocean circulation by freshening the upper subpolar North Atlantic. Here, we track BG-sourced freshwater using passive tracers in a global ocean sea-ice model and show that this freshwater exited the Arctic mostly through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, rather than Fram Strait, during an historical release event in 1983–1995. The Labrador Sea is the most affected region in the subpolar North Atlantic, with a freshening of 0.2 psu on the western shelves and 0.4 psu in the Labrador Current. Given that the present BG freshwater content anomaly is twice the historical analog studied here, the impact of a future rapid release on Labrador Sea salinity could be significant, easily exceeding similar fluxes from Greenland meltwater., The Beaufort Gyre in the western Arctic Ocean has accumulated a large amount of freshwater. Here, the authors show that a historical release in the 1980s resulted in a strong freshening of the western Labrador Sea, suggesting that a future release of the current freshwater volume could even be more impactful.

Small water parcels with low salinity and high dissolved oxygen (DO) are observed in the main thermocline south of the Kuroshio Extension (KE). The Seaglider data, which was collected for four months beginning in late winter 2014 with fine spatial and temporal resolutions, identified small water parcels characterized by low salinity and high DO in the subsurface layer (26.0–27.0 σθ) with a few ten kilometers and a few ten meters in the horizontal and vertical scales, respectively. Water mass analyses revealed larger negative salinity anomalies ( 15 µmol kg− 1) than those of the surrounding water. The characteristics are similar to those of water mass with low salinity and high DO in the subpolar Northwestern Pacific Ocean. Additionally, higher DO anomaly water parcels appear in the upper layer (θ) while low salinity parcels appear in the lower layer (> 26.7 σθ). Oxygen consumption rates from the apparent oxygen utility suggest that the small water parcels consume less oxygen than the surrounding water, implying that they migrate in a shorter time across the KE after subduction and their characteristics may reflect the sea surface temperature, salinity, and DO in the subduction region. Similar small water parcels represented by high-resolution numerical simulations indicate that they pass through the KE in one month. The simulations support the oxygen consumption rate from the Seaglider observations. The existence of a faster process for water mass migration by meso- and submesoscale subduction processes across the KE affects the amount, subduction, and exchange process of water mass. Our study indicates a small water mass contributes to the exchange process across the KE rapidly, which had not been identified in previous studies. Consequently, detailed observations using multiple Seagliders should capture detailed spatial and temporal variability of the water mass exchange process.

This paper details and tests numerical improvements to the ADvanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) model, a widely used finite-element method shallow-water equation solver, to more accurately and efficiently model global storm tides with seamless local mesh refinement in storm landfall locations. The sensitivity to global unstructured mesh design was investigated using automatically generated triangular meshes with a global minimum element size (MinEle) that ranged from 1.5 to 6 km. We demonstrate that refining resolution based on topographic seabed gradients and employing a MinEle less than 3 km are important for the global accuracy of the simulated astronomical tide. Our recommended global mesh design (MinEle = 1.5 km) based on these results was locally refined down to two separate MinEle values (500 and 150 m) at the coastal landfall locations of two intense storms (Hurricane Katrina and Super Typhoon Haiyan) to demonstrate the model's capability for coastal storm tide simulations and to test the sensitivity to local mesh refinement. Simulated maximum storm tide elevations closely follow the lower envelope of observed high-water marks (HWMs) measured near the coast. In general, peak storm tide elevations along the open coast are decreased, and the timing of the peak occurs later with local coastal mesh refinement. However, this mesh refinement only has a significant positive impact on HWM errors in straits and inlets narrower than the MinEle and in bays and lakes separated from the ocean by these passages. Lastly, we demonstrate that the computational performance of the new numerical treatment is 1 to 2 orders of magnitude faster than studies using previous ADCIRC versions because gravity-wave-based stability constraints are removed, allowing for larger computational time steps.

While the Kuroshio is known to be a nutrient stream, as these nutrients are in dark subsurface layers, they are not immediately available for photosynthesis unless they are supplied to the sunlit surface layers. Recent microstructure observations have revealed that strong diapycnal mixing caused by the Kuroshio flowing over topographic features and double diffusion in the subsurface layers of the Kuroshio. However, it is still unclear how much nutrient flux can be provided by these microscale mixing processes. In this study, using an autonomous microstructure float and nutrient samplings, nutrient flux caused by the Kuroshio over the Izu Ridge, and that caused by double diffusion in the Kuroshio Extension are quantified. The nitrate diffusive flux is estimated to be $$>1 \,\hbox {mmol} \,\hbox {N}\,\hbox {m}^{-2}\hbox {day}^{-1}$$ > 1 mmol N m - 2 day - 1 over a distance, 20–30 km near the Izu Ridge and $$>0.1 \,\hbox {mmol} \,\hbox {N}\, \hbox {m}^{-2}\hbox {day}^{-1}$$ > 0.1 mmol N m - 2 day - 1 , which persists further downstream direction over 100 km along the Kuroshio, increasing the subsurface chlorophyll-a concentration in the region 200 km downstream. The double-diffusion-induced nitrate flux is estimated to be 1-$$10 \,\hbox {mmol} \,\hbox {N} \,\hbox {m}^{-2}\hbox {day}^{-1}$$ 10 mmol N m - 2 day - 1 in the pycnostad 26–$$26.5\,\hbox {kgm}^{-3}$$ 26.5 kgm - 3 of the Kuroshio Extension, suggesting that whether this double-diffusion-induced nutrient flux in the subsurface layers can ultimately contribute to surface primary production depends on additional eddy up- and northward fluxes.

Underwater sound in the oceans has been significantly rising in the past decades due to an increase in human activities, adversely affecting the marine environment. In order to assess and limit the impact of underwater noise, the European Commission’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) included the long-term monitoring of low-frequency underwater sound as a relevant indicator to achieve a good environmental status. There is a wide range of commercial hydrophones and observing platforms able to perform such measurements. However, heterogeneity and lack of standardization in both hydrophones and observing platforms makes the integration and data management tasks time-consuming and error-prone. Moreover, their power and communications constraints need to be addressed to make them suitable for long-term ocean sound monitoring. Measured underwater sound levels are challenging to compare because different measurement methodologies are used, leading to a risk of misunderstandings and data misinterpretation. Furthermore, the exact methodology applied is not always public or accessible, significantly reducing ocean sound data re-usability. Within this work, a universal architecture for ocean sound measurement is presented, addressing hydrophone integration, real-time in situ processing and data management challenges. Emphasis is placed on generic and re-usable components, so it can be seamlessly replicated and deployed in new scenarios regardless of the underlying hardware and software constraints (hydrophone model, observing platform, operating system, etc.). Within the proposed architecture, a generic implementation of an underwater sound algorithm based on underwater noise measurement best practices is provided. Standardized and coherent metadata with emphasis on strong semantics is discussed, providing the building blocks for FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) ocean sound data management. High-resolution sea ice modeling is becoming widely available for both operational forecasts and climate studies. In traditional Eulerian grid-based models, small-scale sea ice kinematics represent the most prominent feature of high-resolution simulations, and with rheology models such as viscous–plastic (VP) and Maxwell elasto-brittle (MEB), sea ice models are able to reproduce multi-fractal sea ice deformation and linear kinematic features that are seen in high-resolution observational datasets. In this study, we carry out modeling of sea ice with multiple grid resolutions by using the Community Earth System Model (CESM) and a grid hierarchy (22, 7.3, and 2.4 km grid stepping in the Arctic). By using atmospherically forced experiments, we simulate consistent sea ice climatology across the three resolutions. Furthermore, the model reproduces reasonable sea ice kinematics, including multi-fractal spatial scaling of sea ice deformation that partially depends on atmospheric circulation patterns and forcings. By using high-resolution runs as references, we evaluate the model's effective resolution with respect to the statistics of sea ice kinematics. Specifically, we find the spatial scale at which the probability density function (PDF) of the scaled sea ice deformation rate of low-resolution runs matches that of high-resolution runs. This critical scale is treated as the effective resolution of the coarse-resolution grid, which is estimated to be about 6 to 7 times the grid's native resolution. We show that in our model, the convergence of the elastic–viscous–plastic (EVP) rheology scheme plays an important role in reproducing reasonable kinematics statistics and, more strikingly, simulates systematically thinner sea ice than the standard, non-convergent experiments in landfast ice regions of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Given the wide adoption of EVP and subcycling settings in current models, it highlights the importance of EVP convergence, especially for climate studies and projections. The new grids and the model integration in CESM are openly provided for public use.

Dynamic underwater acoustic network is a research hotspot. Due to the complexity and time-varying of underwater acoustic channel, the performance of single-mode underwater acoustic communication system is often limited by the worst channel situation. Orthogonal signal division multiplexing (OSDM) is a new signal modulation technology, which can be regarded as a bridge between single carrier modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. In order to improve the channel adaptive ability of underwater acoustic communication system and obtain a unified architecture of different carrier modulation, an adaptive multi-mode underwater acoustic communication system based on OSDM and direct sequence spread spectrum modulation (AMMUAC/OS) is proposed in this paper. Combined with spread spectrum modulation, the system can realize single carrier time domain spread spectrum (SC-TDSS), single carrier system with cyclic prefix (SC-CP), OSDM, multicarrier frequency domain spread spectrum (MC-FDSS), and OFDM communication system by adjusting the vector length M of OSDM. The addition of a variety of digital mapping methods enables the system to achieve multi-mode communication with a unified architecture. Based on the relationship between the OSDM vector length M and the underwater acoustic channel delay, a joint adaptive decision criterion based on the maximum channel delay and the channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is proposed. Firstly, the OSDM vector length M is determined according to the maximum channel delay, and then the system communication mode is selected according to the channel SNR. Orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) channel estimation algorithm is used to obtain channel information and minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel equalization algorithm is used for channel compensation. An adaptive multi-mode data frame structure is designed for the interaction between the sender and the receiver. The simulation results show that the proposed AMMUAC/OS can adapt to underwater acoustic channels with different channel delay and SNR.

A fusion algorithm is proposed for the restoration and enhancement of underwater images. Color balance, contrast optimization and histogram stretching are carried out. To alleviate the effect of color shift in an underwater image, the scalar values of R, G, B channels are renewed so that the distributions of the three channels in histogram are similar. Instead of refining the transmittance in dark channel prior based restoration, an optimized contrast algorithm is employed by which the optimal transmittance is determined. To further improve the brightness and contrast of underwater images, a histogram stretching algorithm based on the red channel is given. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed fusion algorithm, experimental underwater images are treated. Results show that the quality of underwater images is improved significantly, both in term of subjective visual effect and objective evaluation. The proposed underwater image processing strategy is also compared with some popular techniques. Comparison results indicate the advantage of the proposed strategy over others.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are strong natural hazards that are important for local and global air–sea interactions. This manuscript briefly reviews the knowledge about the upper ocean responses to TCs, including the current, surface wave, temperature, salinity and biological responses. TCs usually cause upper ocean near-inertial currents, increase strong surface waves, cool the surface ocean, warm subsurface ocean, increase sea surface salinity and decrease subsurface salinity, causing plankton blooms. The upper ocean response to TCs is controlled by TC-induced mixing, advection and surface flux, which usually bias to the right (left) side of the TC track in the Northern (Southern) Hemisphere. The upper ocean response usually recovers in several days to several weeks. The characteristics of the upper ocean response mainly depend on the TC parameters (e.g. TC intensity, translation speed and size) and environmental parameters (e.g. ocean stratification and eddies). In recent decades, our knowledge of the upper ocean response to TCs has improved because of the development of observation methods and numerical models. More processes of the upper ocean response to TCs can be studied by researchers in the future.

In this paper, we propose non-orthogonal multiple access based cooperative relaying strategy (NOMA-CRS) for underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs). We analyse the performance of NOMA-CRS for both shallow and deep water scenarios, under imperfect channel state information (I-CSI) as well as imperfect successive interference cancellation (I-SIC). We derive mathematical expressions for ergodic rate, outage probability as well as the energy efficiency of NOMA-CRS in UASNs by considering the underwater specific characteristics, such as distance-dependent usable bandwidth, acoustic spreading, propagation loss, and fading effects. We compare the performance of NOMA-CRS with the widely used decode-and-forward based CRS in the UASNs. From the results, it is evident that NOMA-CRS can achieve significant improvement in ergodic sum rate and energy efficiency. But the outage performance is slightly degraded for the proposed scheme. Our results show that I-CSI and I-SIC have a significant impact on the performance of the NOMA-CRS. We also investigate the impact of relay position, wind speed as well as shipping activities on the performance of NOMA-CRS under the realistic underwater scenario. Results show that high-speed winds and high shipping activities severely degrade the performance of ergodic sum rate of the NOMA-CRS. Implementation of NOMA-CRS requires CSI at the transmitter. However, acquiring perfect CSI at the transmitter is a challenging task in time-varying multi-path underwater acoustic channels. As a solution, we also propose space-time block coded NOMA-CRS (STBC-NOMA-CRS) for UASNs, which can be implemented without CSI at the transmitter. Extensive simulation studies are conducted to corroborate the analytical findings.

The existing off-board active decoys face such common technical problems as short action time, limited jamming power, and difficult control over deployment situation and effective directive jamming beam direction. For this reason, this paper introduces a new mode and process of anti-missile combat, which places the radar active decoy on an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) to collaborate with the surface warship during the off-board active anti-missile combat. Following the principles of radar terminal guidance centroid jamming, a real-time calculation method for the effective area of off-board active jamming is developed, and the jamming position maneuver strategy under the collaboration of the USV and the surface warship is proposed to implement the off-board active anti-missile combat. The proposed strategy satisfies the needs of long-time, high-power, stable, and effective off-board jamming against incoming anti-ship missiles. This paper further verifies the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in the simulated and live firing confrontations.

The Robeson Channel is a narrow sea water passage between Greenland and Ellesmere Island in the Arctic. It is a pathway of sea ice from the central Arctic and out to Baffin Bay. In this study, we used a set of daily synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from the Sentinel-1A/1B satellites, acquired between September 2016 and April 2017, to study the kinematics of individual ice floes as they approach and then drift through the Robeson Channel. The tracking of 39 selected ice floes was visually performed in the image sequence, and their speed was calculated and linked to the reanalysis 10 m wind from ERA5. The results show that the drift of ice floes is very slow in the compact ice regime upstream of the Robeson Channel, unless the ice floe is surrounded by water or thin ice. In this case, the wind has more influence on the drift. On the other hand, the ice floe drift is found to be about 4–5 times faster in the open-drift regime within the Robeson Channel and is clearly influenced by wind. A linear trend is found between the change in wind and the change in ice drift speed components, along the length of the channel. Case studies are presented to reveal the role of wind in ice floe drift. This paper also addresses the development of the ice arch at the entry of the Robeson Channel, which started development on 24 January and matured on 1 February 2017. Details of the development, obtained using the sequential SAR images, are presented. It is found that the arch's shape continued to adjust by rupturing ice pieces at the locations of cracks under the influence of the southward wind (and hence the contour kept displacing northward). The findings of this study highlight the advantage of using the high-resolution daily SAR coverage in monitoring aspects of sea ice cover in narrow water passages where the ice cover is highly dynamic. The information will be particularly interesting for the possible applications of SAR constellation systems.

The seasonal and interannual variations of the barrier layer thickness (BLT) in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) is investigated in this study using the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation version 3 (SODA v3) ocean reanalysis dataset. Analysis of this study suggests energetic but divergent seasonal variabilities of BLT in the western TIO (5∘ N–12∘ S, 55–75∘ E) and the eastern TIO (5∘ N–12∘ S, 85–100∘ E). For instance, the thicker barrier layer (BL) is observed in the western TIO during boreal winter as a result of decreasing sea surface salinity (SSS) and deeper thermocline, which are associated with the intrusion of freshwater flux and the weakened upwelling, respectively. On the contrary, the variation of BLT in the eastern TIO mainly corresponds to the variation in thermocline depth in all seasons. The interannual variability of BLT with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is explored. During the mature phase of positive IOD events, a thinner BL in the eastern TIO is attributed to the shallower thermocline, while a thicker BL appears in the western TIO due to deeper thermocline and fresher surface water. During negative IOD events, the thicker BL only occurs in the eastern TIO, corresponding to the deeper thermocline. During ENSO events, prominent BLT patterns are observed in the western TIO corresponding to two different physical processes during the developing and decaying phase of El Niño events. During the developing phase of El Niño events, the thicker BL in the western TIO is associated with deepening thermocline induced by the westward Rossby wave. During the decaying phase of El Niño events, the thermocline is weakly deepening, while the BLT reaches its maxima induced by the decreasing SSS.

A 1/60° numerical simulation is carried out within the Labrador Sea to investigate eddies produced along the western coast of Greenland. These eddies, known as Irminger Rings, carry relatively buoyant water from the West Greenland Current system into the interior Labrador Sea. These eddies can survive for up to 2 years; we detect and track 232 eddies produced within our 14 year simulation to investigate how they evolve during their lifetime. Irminger Rings start with a significant layer of freshwater (median 4.4 m) that quickly erodes during the convective winter. The freshwater layer, as opposed to the warm Irminger Water layer, constitutes the majority of the stratification within each eddy. Eddies generally travel southwestwards after formation, and eddies whose trajectory is close to the continental slope tend to have a reduced lifespan and quicker speed than those which drift into the interior deep basin. We find that eddies which spawn further north are more likely to end up influenced by the boundary currents, while those which form to the south are more likely to live longer and enter the deep interior basin. While the formation rate of eddies is generally uniform across our 2005–2018 simulation, Irminger Rings are far more likely to decay during the convective wintertime. We find that most eddies quickly decay within a few months, although some survive long enough to endure two convective winters. All Irminger Rings increase the local stratification in the Labrador Sea, limiting convection. However, the eddies which endure some part of two winters experience a significant buoyancy loss over a long time span such that they may produce Labrador Sea Water within their core during their second winter. This constitutes a small but non-negligible volume of Labrador Sea Water (0.02 to 0.09 Sv) and updates our understanding of Irminger Ring’s role on stratifying the Labrador Sea.

One of the proposed mechanisms to explain the multidecadal variability observed in sea surface temperature of the North Atlantic Ocean consists of a large-scale low-frequency internal mode spontaneously developing because of the large-scale baroclinic instability of the time-mean circulation. Even though this mode has been extensively studied in terms of the buoyancy variance budget, its energetic properties remain poorly known. Here we perform the full mechanical energy budget including available potential energy (APE) and kinetic energy (KE) of this internal mode and decompose the budget into three frequency bands: mean, low frequency (LF) associated with the large-scale mode, and high frequency (HF) associated with mesoscale eddy turbulence. This decomposition allows us to diagnose the energy fluxes between the different reservoirs and to understand the sources and sinks. Because of the large scale of the mode, most of its energy is contained in the APE. In our configuration, the only source of LF APE is the transfer from mean APE to LF APE that is attributed to the large-scale baroclinic instability. In return the sinks of LF APE are the parameterized diffusion, the flux toward HF APE, and, to a much lesser extent, the flux toward LF KE. The presence of an additional wind stress component weakens multidecadal oscillations and modifies the energy fluxes between the different energy reservoirs. The KE transfer appears to only have a minor influence on the multidecadal mode relative to the other energy sources involving APE, in all experiments. These results highlight the utility of the full APE–KE budget.

Climate change is especially strong in the region of the Arctic Ocean, and will have an important impact on its thermo-haline structure. We analyze the results of a hindcast simulation of a new 3D ocean model of the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans for the period 1970–2019. We compared the time period 1970–1999 with the time period 2010–2019. The comparison showed that there is a decrease of stratification between the two periods over most of the shallow Arctic shelf seas and in the core of the Transpolar Ice Drift. Fresh water inputs to the ocean surface decline, and inputs of momentum to the ocean increase, which can explain the decrease in stratification. The comparison also showed that the mixed layer becomes deeper during winter, in response to the weakened stratification owing to increased vertical mixing. The comparison of summer mixed layer depths between the two time periods follows a deepening pattern that is less evident. Regional exceptions include the Nansen Basin and the part of the Canadian Basin bordering the Canadian Archipelago, where the mixed layer shoals. Trends of freshwater fluxes imply that the changes of haline stratification in these regions are also influenced by other processes, for example, horizontal advection of fresh water, increased mixing and changes in the underlaying water masses. Runoff increase toward the Arctic Ocean can locally decrease but also increase salinity, and has an impact on stratification which can be explained by coastal dynamics. The results emphasize the non-linear nature of Arctic Ocean dynamics.

The physical processes driving the genesis of surface- and subsurface-intensified cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies originating from the coastal current system of the Mauritanian upwelling region are investigated using a high-resolution (∼1.5 km) configuration of GFDL’s Modular Ocean Model. Estimating an energy budget for the boundary current reveals a baroclinically unstable state during its intensification phase in boreal summer and which is driving eddy generation within the near-coastal region. The mean poleward coastal flow’s interaction with the sloping topography induces enhanced anticyclonic vorticity, with potential vorticity close to zero generated in the bottom boundary layer. Flow separation at sharp topographic bends intensifies the anticyclonic vorticity, and submesoscale structures of low PV coalesce to form anticyclonic vortices. A combination of offshore Ekman transport and horizontal advection determined the amount of South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) in an anticyclonic eddy. A vortex with a relatively dense and low PV core will form an anticyclonic mode water eddy, which will subduct along isopycnals while propagating offshore and hence be shielded from surface buoyancy forcing. Less contribution of dense SACW promotes the generation of surface anticyclonic eddies as the core is composed of a lighter water mass, which causes the eddy to stay closer to the surface and hence be exposed to surface buoyancy forcing. Simulated cyclonic eddies are formed between the rotational flow of an offshore anticyclonic vortex and a poleward flowing boundary current, with eddy potential energy being the dominant source of eddy kinetic energy. All three types of eddies play a key role in the exchange between the Mauritanian coastal currents system and the adjacent eastern boundary shadow zone region.

International audience; Irreversible mixing of tracers and momentum in the ocean occurs via diffusion and friction at the scale of molecules. That such molecular processes profoundly influence basin-scale ocean currents is counter-intuitive. Many successful theories of ocean circulation indeed ignore diffusive and frictional processes. Yet oceanographers have long recognized that turbulence can amplify irreversible mixing and its influence on large-scale flows. In recent years, substantial progress has been made in the mapping of mixing energized by three-dimensional and geostrophic turbulence. This progress not only helps to quantify connections between mixing and observed circulation systems, but also to better characterize these circulation systems. This chapter surveys the rapidly evolving understanding of the impacts of mixing on the strength and structure of major ocean gyres, overturning circulations and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Accumulating evidence suggests that global ocean circulation is shaped by energetic mixing near ocean boundaries, while either weak or largely adiabatic away from boundaries.

The article presents a study investigating the level of variation in sea state parameters encountered by sailing ships crossing the oceans. The sea state parameters have been obtained from a reanalysis, in this case the ERA5. The study is based on the use of different interpolation schemes to compute parameters in geographical positions off the fixed grid. It is shown that the variation in sea state parameters can be significant. Consequently, in case of sailing ships, covering relatively long distances in a short time (30-60 minutes), it is recommended to rely on bilinear interpolation rather than nearest neighbour. The variation in the sea state parameters is, in fact, at a level which means that the normal assumption of a stationary seaway in periods up to 3 hours likely is violated for ships sailing the typical service speed (15 – 20+ knots).

We used a well-validated three-dimensional ocean model to investigate the process of energetic response of near-inertial oscillations (NIOs) to a tropical cyclone (TC) and strong background jet in the South China Sea (SCS). We found that the NIO and near-inertial kinetic energy (KEni) varied distinctly during different stages of the TC forcing, and the horizontal and vertical transport of KEni was largely modulated by the velocity and vorticity of the jet. The KEni reached its peak value within ∼1/2 the inertial period after the initial TC forcing stage in the upper layer, decayed quickly by 1∕2 in the next 2 d, and further decreased at a slower rate during the relaxation stage of the TC forcing. Analyses of the KEni balance indicate that the weakened KEni in the upper layer during the forcing stage was mainly attributed to the downward KEni transport due to pressure work through the vertical displacement of isopycnal surfaces, while upward KEni advection from depths also contributed to the weakening in the TC-induced upwelling region. In contrast, during the relaxation stage as the TC moved away, the effect of vertical advection on KEni reduction was negligible and the KEni was chiefly removed by the outward propagation of inertial-gravity waves, horizontal advection, and viscous dissipation. Both the outward wave propagation and horizontal advection by the jet provided the KEni source in the far field. During both stages, the negative geostrophic vorticity south of the jet facilitated the vertical propagation of inertial-gravity waves.

In recent centuries, human activities have greatly modified the geomorphology of coastal regions. However, studies of historical and possible future changes in coastal flood extremes typically ignore the influence of geomorphic change. Here, we quantify the influence of 20th-century man-made changes to Jamaica Bay, New York City, on present-day storm tides. We develop and validate a hydrodynamic model for the 1870s based on detailed maps of bathymetry, seabed characteristics, topography, and tide observations for use alongside a present-day model. Predominantly through dredging, landfill, and inlet stabilization, the average water depth of the bay increased from 1.7 to 4.5 m, tidal surface area decreased from 92 to 72 km2, and the inlet minimum cross-sectional area expanded from 4800 to 8900 m2. Total (freshwater plus salt) marsh habitat area has declined from 61 to 15 km2 and intertidal unvegetated habitat area from 17 to 4.6 km2. A probabilistic flood hazard assessment with simulations of 144 storm events reveals that the landscape changes caused an increase of 0.28 m (12 %) in the 100-year storm tide, even larger than the influence of global sea level rise of about 0.23 m since the 1870s. Specific anthropogenic changes to estuary depth and area as well as inlet depth and width are shown through targeted modeling and dynamics-based considerations to be the most important drivers of increasing storm tides.

A new monthly global sea level reconstruction for 1900–2015 was analyzed and compared with various observations to examine regional variability and trends in the ocean dynamics of the western North Atlantic Ocean and the US East Coast. Proxies of the Gulf Stream (GS) strength in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (GS-MAB) and in the South Atlantic Bight (GS-SAB) were derived from sea level differences across the GS. While decadal oscillations dominate the 116-year record, the analysis showed an unprecedented long period of weakening in the GS flow since the late 1990s. The only other period of long weakening in the record was during the 1960s–1970s, and red noise experiments showed that is very unlikely that those just occurred by chance. Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) was used to separate oscillations at different timescales, showing that the low-frequency variability of the GS is connected to the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO) and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The recent weakening of the reconstructed GS-MAB was mostly influenced by weakening of the upper mid-ocean transport component of AMOC as observed by the RAPID measurements for 2005–2015. Comparison between the reconstructed sea level near the coast and tide gauge data for 1927–2015 showed that the reconstruction underestimated observed coastal sea level variability for timescales less than ∼5 years, but lower-frequency variability of coastal sea level was captured very well in both amplitude and phase by the reconstruction. Comparison between the GS-SAB proxy and the observed Florida Current transport for 1982–2015 also showed significant correlations for oscillations with periods longer than ∼5 years. The study demonstrated that despite the coarse horizontal resolution of the global reconstruction (1∘ × 1∘), long-term variations in regional dynamics can be captured quite well, thus making the data useful for studies of long-term variability in other regions as well.

Laser scanning or photogrammetry are useful individual techniques for digital documentation of cultural heritage sites. However, these techniques are of limited usage if cultural heritage such as the Great Wall is in harsh geographical conditions. The Great Wall is usually built on the ridge with cliffs on both sides, so it is very difficult to construct scaffolding. Therefore, the three-dimensional (3D) data obtained from the traditional 3D laser scanning is not complete. As UAV cannot enter the enemy tower, the 3D structure data inside the enemy tower with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry is missing. In order to explore effective methods to completely collect the 3D data of cultural heritage under harsh geographical environment, this study focuses on establishing a 3D model and the associated digital documentation for the No.15 enemy tower of the New Guangwu Great Wall using a combination of terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry. This paper proposes an integrated data collection method and reduces the layout of image control points using RTK-UAV technology, which improved work efficiency and reduced work risks as well. In this paper, the internal structure data of the Great Wall enemy tower was collected by laser scanning, the external structure data was collected by UAV photogrammetry, and data fusion was based on ICP algorithm. Finally, we obtained the complete and high quality 3D digital documentation of the Great Wall enemy tower, the data can be displayed digitally and help heritage experts complete the Great Wall's restoration. This study demonstrates the potential of integrating terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry in 3D digital documentation of cultural heritage sites.

Coherent oceanic mesoscale eddies with unique dynamical structures have great impacts on ocean transports and global climate. Eddy kinetic energy (EKE), derived from time-dependent circulation, is commonly used to study mesoscale eddies. However, there are three deficiencies of EKE when focusing on the analysis of coherent mesoscale eddies. Here, we propose a comprehensive concept—Lagrangian EKE (LEKE) as an additional metric which is a combination of gridded EKE calculated in Eulerian framework and tracked coherent mesoscale eddies in Lagrangian framework. Evidences suggest that LEKE can make up these deficiencies as an effective supplement. In this study, regional application over Northwestern Pacific Ocean is taken as an example. It clearly demonstrates that LEKE reveals more accurate and detailed characteristics of both cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies than EKE when coherent mesoscale eddies are the specific focus, such as the variation rates of kinetic energy during the eddy propagation, spatial–temporal differences of kinetic energy between cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies. Overall, using LEKE to analyze coherent mesoscale eddies gives the rise to understand the spatial–temporal contrasts between eddies with different polarities, and provides a new perspective to recognize the crucial role played by coherent mesoscale eddies in the ocean.

The Maxwell elasto-brittle (MEB) rheology is implemented in the Eulerian finite-difference (FD) modeling framework commonly used in classical viscous-plastic (VP) models. The role of the damage parameterization, the cornerstone of the MEB rheology, in the formation and collapse of ice arches and ice bridges in a narrow channel is investigated. Ice bridge simulations are compared with observations to derive constraints on the mechanical properties of landfast sea ice. Results show that the overall dynamical behavior documented in previous MEB models is reproduced in the FD implementation, such as the localization of the damage in space and time and the propagation of ice fractures in space at very short timescales. In the simulations, an ice arch is easily formed downstream of the channel, sustaining an ice bridge upstream. The ice bridge collapses under a critical surface forcing that depends on the material cohesion. Typical ice arch conditions observed in the Arctic are best simulated using a material cohesion in the range of 5–10 kN m−2. Upstream of the channel, fracture lines along which convergence (ridging) takes place are oriented at an angle that depends on the angle of internal friction. Their orientation, however, deviates from the Mohr–Coulomb theory. The damage parameterization is found to cause instabilities at large compressive stresses, which prevents the production of longer-term simulations required for the formation of stable ice arches upstream of the channel between these lines of fracture. Based on these results, we propose that the stress correction scheme used in the damage parameterization be modified to remove numerical instabilities.

The present study examines the influence of Boreal Summer Intra-Seasonal Oscillation (BSISO) on Tropical Indian Ocean surface waves using the latest version of ECMWF reanalysis (ERA5) during summer monsoon months June through August (JJA). BSISO is a distinct mode of ISO during JJA having a northward and eastward movement from the equatorial Indian Ocean to the western Pacific Ocean. Composite analysis of anomalies of significant wave heights (SWH), wind sea, swell, and mean wave period for 8 phases of BSISO has been carried out to understand its influence. SWH anomalies in response to BSISO’s are phase-dependent. Negative SWH anomalies are noticed with strong northward and weak eastward propagation during the phases 1–3 in response to the easterly wind anomalies over the north Indian Ocean (NIO). During phases 5–7, high positive SWH anomalies (~ 0.5 m) in response to the westerly wind anomalies with northward and weak eastward propagation over NIO. Phases 4 and 8 behave like transition phases. In addition, enhanced (suppressed) SWH anomalies (~ 0.5 m) are seen during the active (break) spells of BSISO over NIO. Over the southern tip of India, negative (positive) SWH anomalies prevail during the active (break) conditions. This study clearly suggests that the wave forecast advisories during intra-seasonal time scales would be more useful for offshore and coastal activities during the summer monsoon.

Over the last 3 decades, a large portion of coral cover has been lost around the globe. This significant decline necessitates a rapid assessment of coral reef health to enable more effective management. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for coral cover estimation and demonstrate its viability. A large-scale 3-D structure model, with resolutions in the x, y and z planes of 0.01 m, was successfully generated by means of a towed optical camera array system (Speedy Sea Scanner). The survey efficiency attained was 12,146 m2/h. In addition, we propose a segmentation method utilizing U-Net architecture and estimate coral coverage using a large-scale 2-D image. The U-Net-based segmentation method has shown higher accuracy than pixelwise CNN modeling. Moreover, the computational cost of a U-Net-based method is much lower than that of a pixelwise CNN-based one. We believe that an array of these survey tools can contribute to the rapid assessment of coral reefs.

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.The sandbar of Horokayanto Lagoon, a sandbar-fronted lagoon on the coast of eastern Hokkaido, Japan, was partly breached, and the bottom was partly exposed during severe weather in June 2016. After the breach, the mean lagoon level fell to about 1.2 m above Tokyo Peil, equivalent to the height of the mean higher-high tide level. Field surveys were conducted on 2, 23, and 30 June 2016 to examine topographical changes in the Horokayanto area. Four diatom-assemblage groups were identified from samples collected during this fieldwork: marsh, emerged lagoon bottom, lagoon bottom, and seashore groups. The assemblages showed good consistency with the salinity and sediment properties at each location. The high-tide-level indicator Pseudopodosira kosugii was recognized in the emerged lagoon-bottom assemblage, together with freshwater–brackish and brackish–marine species. Living P. kosugii colonies had previously been recognized only in the lower reaches of the Obitsu River, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, although the species is widespread in Holocene sediments in Japan and other countries. Reworked Neogene diatoms were also detected in the assemblages. These diatoms were presumably derived from nearby Neogene basement rocks, such as the Taiki Formation, which were eroded by current inflow into the lagoon during the severe weather. During the period of emergence, seawater might have been transported into Horokayanto Lagoon by high waves generated by an atmospheric low-pressure system. Water pressure or moisture changes caused by the emergence, changes in light quantum density and ultraviolet rays, or changes in water quality, such as in salinity and pH, or a mixture of these factors, may have influenced the increase in abundance of P. kosugii.

An analysis of the viability of the Witness King Tides project (hereafter called WKT) using data from the GESLA-2 database of quasi-global tide-gauge records is described. The results indicate regions of the world where a key criterion for a WKT project (that it be executed on a day of unusually high sea level) would likely be met (e.g. the west coast of the USA) and others where it would not (e.g. the east coast of North America). Recommendations are made both for assessments that should be made prior to a WKT project and also for an alternative to WKT projects.

We investigate a case of ocean waves through a pack ice cover captured by Sentinel-1A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on 12 October 2015 in the Beaufort Sea. The study domain is 400 km by 300 km, adjacent to a marginal ice zone (MIZ). The wave spectra in this domain were reported in a previous study (Stopa et al., 2018b). In that study, the authors divided the domain into two regions delineated by the first appearance of leads (FAL) and reported a clear change of wave attenuation of the total energy between the two regions. In the present study, we use the same dataset to study the spectral attenuation in the domain. According to the quality of SAR-retrieved wave spectrum, we focus on a range of wave numbers corresponding to 9–15 s waves from the open-water dispersion relation. We first determine the apparent attenuation rates of each wave number by pairing the wave spectra from different locations. These attenuation rates slightly increase with increasing wave number before the FAL and become lower and more uniform against wave number in thicker ice after the FAL. The spectral attenuation due to the ice effect is then extracted from the measured apparent attenuation and used to calibrate two viscoelastic wave-in-ice models. For the Wang and Shen (2010b) model, the calibrated equivalent shear modulus and viscosity of the pack ice are roughly 1 order of magnitude greater than that in grease and pancake ice reported in Cheng et al. (2017). These parameters obtained for the extended Fox and Squire model are much greater, as found in Mosig et al. (2015) using data from the Antarctic MIZ. This study shows a promising way of using remote-sensing data with large spatial coverage to conduct model calibration for various types of ice cover.Highlights. Three key points: The spatial distribution of wave number and spectral attenuation in pack ice are analyzed from SAR-retrieved surface wave spectra. The spectral attenuation rate of 9–15 s waves varies around 10−5 m2 s−1, with lower values in thicker semicontinuous ice fields with leads. The calibrated viscoelastic parameters are greater than those found in pancake ice.

Internal waves are density oscillations propagating along the ocean’s inner stratification, which are now acknowledged as a key constituent of the ocean’s dynamics. They usually result from barotropic tides, which flow over bottom topography, causing density oscillations to propagate along the pycnocline with a tidal frequency (i.e. internal tides). These large-scale waves propagate away from their forcing bathymetry and frequently disintegrate into nonlinear short-scale (higher-frequency) internal wave packets. Typically, short-scale internal wave observations in the ocean are associated with vertical structures (in the water column) of the lowest fundamental mode. Higher vertical modes have recently been documented as well, but these are commonly short-lived (up to a few hours). However, unprecedented satellite images showing long-lived short-scale mode-2 internal waves have now been documented in the Andaman Sea, and we report here the companion results of a non-hydrostatic and fully nonlinear numerical model. The simulations reproduce the waves’ main characteristics as observed in satellite imagery, and the results suggest a resonant coupling with a larger-scale mode-4 internal tide as an explanation for their long-lived character.
