Abstract Background Depression may be associated with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The goal of this study was to explore the association of severe of depression with the risk of type 2 diabetes in adults in Guizhou, China. Methods A 10‐year prospective cohort study of 7158 nondiabetes adults aged 18 years or older was conducted in Guizhou, southwest China from 2010 to 2020. The Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) was used to measure the prevalence of depression. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of depression and incident type 2 diabetes. A quantile regression (QR) analytical approach were applied to evaluate the associations of PHQ‐9 score with plasma glucose values. Results A total of 739 type 2 diabetes cases were identified during a median follow‐up of 6.59 years. The HR (95% CI) per 1‐SD increase for baseline PHQ‐9 score was 1.051 (1.021, 1.082) after multivariable adjustment. Abstract Background Existing evidence concerning the relationship between daytime napping and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is inconsistent, and whether the effects of napping differ by body fat percentage (BFP) and C‐reactive protein (CRP) is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between daytime napping frequency and T2D risk and whether such an association was modified by BFP and CRP. Methods We included 435 342 participants free of diabetes from the UK Biobank. Participants were categorized as nonnappers, occasional nappers, and frequent nappers based on napping frequency, and BFP/CRP was divided into quartiles. Cox proportional hazards models were used. Results During a median follow‐up of 9.2 years, 17 592 T2D cases occurred. Higher frequency of daytime napping was significantly associated with an increased risk of T2D. Background: Social cognitive impairments, specifically in facial emotion processing and mental state attribution, are common in post-traumatic stress disorder. However few studies so far have examined whether social cognitive ability impacts on PTSD recovery. Objective: To examine whether baseline social cognitive abilities are associated with treatment outcomes following trauma-focused therapy for PTSD. Method: This is a cohort study that will relate treatment outcomes post-discharge to baseline measures of social cognition (five tasks: Emotion Odd-One-Out Task (Oddity), Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task (RMET), Social Shapes Test (SST), Spontaneous Theory of Mind Protocol (STOMP), and Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ-8)) in people starting a course of psychological therapy for PTSD (target N = 60). The primary outcome will be pre- to post-treatment change in PTSD symptom severity (assessed using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5). Secondary outcomes include functional impairment (assessed using the Work and Social Adjustment Scale), drop-out rate, and analyses differentiating participants with DSM-5 PTSD and ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD. Regression models will be used to examine associations between baseline social cognitive performance and outcome measures while adjusting for potential confounders. Two pilot studies informed the development of our study protocol. The first involved qualitative analysis of interviews with nine participants with lived experience of mental health problems to inform our research questions and study protocol. The second involved trialling social cognitive tasks on 20 non-clinical participants to refine our test battery. Discussion: This study will address a gap in the literature about whether abilities in social cognition in people living with PTSD are associated with treatment-related recovery. Impairments in social cognition are recognised in people with PTSD. Few studies have examined whether social cognitive ability is associated with recovery from PTSD. Background: The relationship between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) trajectories and myocardial infarction (MI) has so far been unclear in people with diabetes or prediabetes. We aimed to identify common eGFR trajectories in people with diabetes or prediabetes and to examine their association with MI risk. Methods: The data of this analysis were derived from the Kailuan study, which was a prospective community‐based cohort study. The eGFR trajectories of 24 723 participants from the year 2006 to 2012 were generated by latent mixture modeling. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) and their 95% CI for the subsequent risk of MI of different eGFR trajectories. Results: We identified five distinct eGFR trajectories during 2006 to 2012 and named them according to their eGFR range and pattern over time: low‐stable (9.4%), moderate‐stable (31.4%), moderate‐increasing (29.5%), high‐decreasing (13.9%), and high‐stable (15.8%). During a mean follow‐up of 4.61 years, there were a total of 235 incident MI. Although the high‐decreasing group had similar eGFR levels to the moderate‐stable group during the last exposure period, the risk was much higher (adjusted HR, 3.57; 95% CI, 1.63‐7.85 vs adjusted HR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.36‐6.08). Notably, the moderate‐increasing group had reached the normal range, but still had a significantly increased risk (adjusted HR, 2.63; 95% CI, 1.24‐5.55). Conclusions: eGFR trajectories were associated with MI risk in people with diabetes or prediabetes. These observations suggest that long‐term trajectories of eGFR may be important for risk prediction of MI and should be highlighted in primary prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This meta‐analysis was performed to quantitatively evaluate the dose‐response association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched up to 12 December 2018 for articles that assessed the OSA‐T2DM association. Random effects models were used to analyze the quantitative association between OSA and risk of T2DM. Restricted cubic splines were used to model the dose‐response association between apnea‐hypopnea index (AHI), used to assess the severity of OSA according to events/h, and risk of T2DM. Results: We included 16 cohort studies in our meta‐analysis. During a median follow‐up of 10.5 years (range: 3.0‐22.0), 19 355 T2DM cases were reported among 338 912 study participants. The pooled relative risk of T2DM was 1.40 (95% CI, 1.32‐1.48) for OSA in the binary meta‐analysis and 1.08 (1.01‐1.14) for each 5‐event/h increase in AHI value. We found a positive linear association between OSA and T2DM risk. Conclusions: Our dose‐response meta‐analysis revealed a linear association between OSA and T2DM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Evidence for the association between environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate this association in female never smokers. Methods: We analyzed 28 177 female participants of the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) in the Suzhou area, who were never smokers and had no diabetes. ETS exposure was defined as being exposed to other people's tobacco smoke either at home, workplace, or in public places at least 1 d/wk. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess the association between ETS exposure and incident T2DM according to the frequency and duration of ETS exposure. Results: A total of 774 incident cases of T2DM were identified during a median 7.3‐year follow‐up. Compared with no ETS exposure, hazard ratios (95% CIs) for all ETS exposure, daily, and ≥14 h/wk ETS exposure were 1.17 (1.00‐1.37), 1.23 (1.04‐1.46), and 1.25 (1.03‐1.53), respectively. Moreover, a positive dose‐response relationship was observed between ETS exposure level and T2DM (all P <.05 for trend). Conclusions: This prospective study suggests that ETS exposure increases the risk of T2DM incidence with dose‐response relationship in female never smokers. Abstract: Background: Micronutrients play a key role in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but methodological difficulties arise from their collinearity and interdependencies with foods. The aim of the present study was to identify micronutrient dietary patterns in the E3N‐EPIC (Etude Epidémiologique auprès de femmes de l'Education Nationale) cohort and to investigate their association with risk of T2DM. Methods: Principal component analysis was used to identify micronutrient patterns among 71 270 women from the E3N‐EPIC cohort. Associations between micronutrient patterns and risk of T2DM were quantified by hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from Cox proportional hazards regression models, adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Six micronutrient patterns were identified explaining 78% of the total variance in micronutrient intake. A positive association was found between T2DM and a pattern highly correlated with intake of vitamins B2 and B5 (HR 1.34; 95% CI 1.16–1.56). Similarly, a positive association was found with a pattern characterized by high intakes of vitamin B12 and retinol, and a low intake of vitamin C (HR 1.30; 95% CI 1.15–1.48). An inverse association was observed between T2DM and another two patterns: one correlated with magnesium and vitamin B3 (HR 0.75; 95% CI 0.66–0.86), and the other correlated with manganese intake (HR 0.82; 95% CI 0.72–0.94). Conclusions: The findings of the present study identify micronutrients that have an effect on the risk of T2DM, and enable better understanding of the complexity of the diet when investigating the association between micronutrients and T2DM. Abstract: Background: Inexpensive and easily measured indices are needed for the early prediction of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in rural areas of China. The aim of this study was to compare triglyceride glucose (TyG), visceral adiposity (VAI), and lipid accumulation product (LAP) with traditional individual measures and their ratios for predicting T2DM. Methods: Data for 11 113 people with baseline normal fasting glucose in a rural Chinese cohort were followed for a median of 6.0 years. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate covariate‐adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) and receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to compare the ability of traditional measures and TyG, VAI, and LAP at baseline to predict T2DM at follow‐up. Results: Among individual measures, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and waist circumference (WC) were strongly associated with T2DM. Of all lipid ratios, an elevated triglycerides (TG) to high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C) ratio was associated the most with T2DM. Compared with the first quartiles of TyG, VAI, and LAP, their fourth quartiles were associated with T2DM for men (aHR 3.54 [95% CI 2.08–6.03], 2.89 [1.72–4.87], and 5.02 [2.85–8.85], respectively) and women (6.15 [3.48–10.85], 4.40 [2.61–7.42], and 6.49 [3.48–12.12], respectively). For predicting T2DM risk, TyG, VAI, and LAP were mostly superior to the TG:  HDL‐C ratio, but did not differ from FPG and WC. Conclusions: Prediction of T2DM was not improved by TyG, VAI, and LAP versus FPG or WC alone. Therefore, TyG, VAI, and LAP may not be inexpensive tools for predicting T2DM in rural Chinese people. Background Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 ( LRP5) plays an important role in glucose and cholesterol metabolism. The present cohort study evaluated associations of LRP5 variants with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus ( T2DM) in a rural adult Chinese population. Methods In all, 7751 subjects aged ≥18 years without T2DM underwent genotyping at baseline; 6326 subjects (81.62%) were followed-up, and 5511 with a clear disease outcome were eligible for analysis. The same questionnaire was administered and the same anthropometric and blood biochemical examinations were performed at baseline and follow-up. Association analysis was performed for five single nucleotide polymorphisms and haplotypes of LRP5. Results Cox proportional hazards testing of three different genetic models found no significant association between T2DM and LRP5 after adjusting for potential risk factors ( P > 0.05). However, the incidence of T2DM in subjects with LRP5 mutational genotypes was higher in the overweight/obese than normal weight population. Under the dominant model, the risk of T2DM was increased with an interaction between rs11228303 and the waist-to-height ratio adjusted for baseline age, sex, and family history of T2DM (synergy index [ SI] = 4.172; 95% confidence interval [ CI] 1.014-17.166)], and body mass index ( SI = 3.237; 95% CI 1.102-9.509). Furthermore, the A allele of rs3758644 was related to decreased fasting plasma insulin and homeostatic model assessment of β-cell function levels, whereas the T allele of rs12363572 was related to increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in new-onset diabetes patients ( P < 0.05). Conclusions The risk of T2DM may be associated with interactions between the LRP5 gene and overweight and obesity. Polymorphisms of LRP5 are related to β-cell function and lipid metabolism. Background The aim of the present study was to estimate the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the number of diabetes events attributable to abdominal obesity in China. Methods A cohort study was conducted in a sample of 24 996 Chinese adults aged 35-74 years, with 19.9% of subjects lost to follow-up. Waist circumference ( WC) was measured at baseline in 1998 and 2000-01, and abdominal obesity was defined as WC ≥ 90 cm in men and ≥80 cm in women. Information on incident diabetes was collected during follow-up in 2007-08. We estimated the number of T2D events attributed to abdominal obesity using confounder-adjusted population-attributable risk, incidence of diabetes, and the population size of China in 2010. Results After a mean follow-up of 8.0 years, the age-standardized incidence of T2D was 9.6 and 9.2 per 1000 person-years in men and women, respectively. Abdominal obesity accounted for 28.1% (95% confidence interval [ CI] 14.8%, 40.5%) of incident diabetes among men and 41.2% (95% CI 28.3%, 52.6%) among women using the diagnostic criteria of abdominal obesity recommended by the International Diabetes Federation. We estimated that, in 2010, 2.4 (95% CI 1.5, 3.2) million diabetes events were attributable to abdominal obesity: 1.0 (95% CI 0.5, 1.4) million in men and 1.4 (95% CI 1.0, 1.8) million in women. Conclusions Abdominal obesity is a major risk factor for T2D. Strengthening programs and initiatives for preventing and controlling obesity focusing on lifestyle changes should be a priority in the national strategy to reduce diabetes burden in China. Background Population-based data for diabetic hand syndrome (DHS) are limited. The aim of the present epidemiological study was to estimate the overall and cause-specific prevalence and rate ratio (RR) of DHS in patients with diabetes. Methods The present study was a cross-sectional study based on a random sample of 57 093 diabetics and matched controls, both identified from Taiwan National Health Insurance claims in 2010. The DHS analyzed in the present study included carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), stenosing flexor tenosynovitis (SFT), limited joint mobility (LJM), and Dupuytren's disease (DD). Results The prevalence of overall DHS was estimated at 2472 per 105 for the diabetics, compared with 1641 per 105 for the controls, representing a prevalence RR of 1.51 (95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.39-1.64). Stratified analyses further revealed that the significantly increased prevalence of overall DHS was more evident in females than males (1.59 vs 1.36) and was only noted in diabetics aged ≥35 years. Cause-specific analysis suggested that patients with diabetes had the highest prevalence of CTS (1244 per 105), followed by SFT (1209 per 105), LJM (39 per 105), and DD (6 per 105). In addition, diabetes was only significantly associated with CTS (RR 1.34; 95 % CI 1.20-1.51) and SFT (1.74; 95 % CI 1.54-1.97).
