Latency and reactivation in neurons are critical aspects of VZV pathogenesis that have historically been difficult to investigate. Viral genomes are retained in many human ganglia after the primary infection, varicella; and about one-third of the naturally infected VZV seropositive population reactivates latent virus, which most often clinically manifests as herpes zoster (HZ or Shingles). HZ is frequently complicated by acute and chronic debilitating pain for which there remains a need for more effective treatment options. Understanding of the latent state is likely to be essential in the design of strategies to reduce reactivation. Experimentally addressing VZV latency has been difficult because of the strict human species specificity of VZV and the fact that until recently, experimental reactivation had not been achieved. We do not yet know the neuron subtypes that harbor latent genomes, whether all can potentially reactivate, what the drivers of VZV reactivation are, and how immunity interplays with the latent state to control reactivation. However, recent advances have enabled a picture of VZV latency to start to emerge. The first is the ability to detect the latent viral genome and its expression in human ganglionic tissues with extraordinary sensitivity. The second, the subject of this chapter, is the development of in vitro human neuron systems permitting the modeling of latent states that can be experimentally reactivated. This review will summarize recent advances of in vitro models of neuronal VZV latency and reactivation, the limitations of the current systems, and discuss outstanding questions and future directions regarding these processes using these and yet to be developed models. Results obtained from the in vitro models to date will also be discussed in light of the recent data gleaned from studies of VZV latency and gene expression learned from human cadaver ganglia, especially the discovery of VZV latency transcripts that seem to parallel the long-studied latency-associated transcripts of other neurotropic alphaherpesviruses., (© 2021. The present study aimed to examine microRNA (miR)-940 expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and cells, analyze its association with the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients, and explore the potential underlying mechanisms. miR-940 expression in ESCC cell lines and a normal esophageal cell line was detected using reverse transcription-quantitative (RT-q)PCR. Furthermore, 210 resected ESCC tissue and para-carcinoma tissue specimens were collected, and miR-940 expression in those tissues was detected by RT-qPCR. In addition, the association of miR-940 with the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients was analyzed. In an in vitro experiment, miR-940 mimics were transduced into ESCC cells by the liposome method. An MTT assay was used to detect the effect of miR-940 on the viability of ESCC cells. The influence of miR-940 on the cell cycle and apoptotic rate of ESCC cells was detected by flow cytometry. The present results indicated that the expression levels of miR-940 in human ESCC tissues and cell lines were markedly downregulated, and that low expression of miR-940 in ESCC tissues was significantly associated with a poor degree of differentiation, positive lymph node metastasis and advanced clinical stage. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis suggested that low miR-940 expression was associated with poor prognosis. Cox regression analysis revealed that lymph node metastasis, clinical stage and miR-940 expression were independent risk factors affecting the prognosis of patients. Overexpression of miR-940 in ESCC cells markedly reduced the cell viability, blocked the cell cycle at G0/G1 phase and promoted cell apoptosis. These results suggest that miR-940 is downregulated in ESCC, which is linked to the occurrence and progression of ESCC. Conversely, overexpression of miR-940 reduced the cell viability and promoted apoptosis of ESCC cells. Therefore, miR-940 may be a promising novel prognostic marker and anti-cancer target in ESCC. Behavioral studies have shown spatial working memory impairment with aging in several animal species, including humans. Persistent activity of layer 3 pyramidal dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) neurons during delay periods of working memory tasks is important for encoding memory of the stimulus. In vitro studies have shown that these neurons undergo significant age-related structural and functional changes, but the extent to which these changes affect neural mechanisms underlying spatial working memory is not understood fully. Here, we confirm previous studies showing impairment on the Delayed Recognition Span Task in the spatial condition (DRSTsp), and increased in vitro action potential firing rates (hyperexcitability), across the adult life span of the rhesus monkey. We use a bump attractor model to predict how empirically observed changes in the aging dlPFC affect performance on the Delayed Response Task (DRT), and introduce a model of memory retention in the DRSTsp. Persistent activity—and, in turn, cognitive performance—in both models was affected much more by hyperexcitability of pyramidal neurons than by a loss of synapses. Our DRT simulations predict that additional changes to the network, such as increased firing of inhibitory interneurons, are needed to account for lower firing rates during the DRT with aging reported in vivo. Synaptic facilitation was an essential feature of the DRSTsp model, but it did not compensate fully for the effects of the other age-related changes on DRT performance. Modeling pyramidal neuron hyperexcitability and synapse loss simultaneously led to a partial recovery of function in both tasks, with the simulated level of DRSTsp impairment similar to that observed in aging monkeys. γ‐Herpesviruses establish latent infections of lymphocytes and drive their proliferation, causing cancers and motivating a search for vaccines. Effective vaccination against murid herpesvirus‐4 (MuHV‐4)‐driven lymphoproliferation by latency‐impaired mutant viruses suggests that lytic access to the latency reservoir is a viable target for control. However, the vaccines retained the immunogenic MuHV‐4 M2 latency gene. Here, a strong reduction in challenge virus load was maintained when the challenge virus lacked the main latency‐associated CD8+ T‐cell epitope of M2, or when the vaccine virus lacked M2 entirely. This protection was maintained also when the vaccine virus lacked both episome maintenance and the genomic region encompassing M1, M2, M3, M4 and ORF4. Therefore, protection did not require immunity to known MuHV‐4 latency genes. As the remaining vaccine virus genes have clear homologs in human γ‐herpesviruses, this approach of deleting viral latency genes could also be applied to them, to generate safe and effective vaccines against human disease. The viscosity increase of the organic phase when liquid–liquid extraction processes are intensified causes difficulties for hydrometallurgical processes on industrial scale. In this work, we have analyzed this problem for the example of N,N-dialkylamides in the presence of uranyl nitrate experimentally. Furthermore, we present a minimal model at nanoscale that allows rationalizing the experimental phenomena by connecting the molecular, mesoscopic and macroscopic scale and that allows predicting qualitative trends in viscosity. This model opens broad possibilities in optimizing constraints and is a further step towards knowledge-based formulation of extracting microemulsions formed by microstructures with low connectivity, even at high load with heavy metals. How has the concept of metacognition been used within basic and applied psychological research? We begin our answer by presenting a broad definition of metacognition, a historical overview of its development and its presence in research databases. To assess which function and facets are most frequently addressed within each of the sub-disciplines, we present results from separate literature searches. We then review how metacognition has been defined and empirically explored within selected sub-disciplines in terms of typical research questions, conceptual definitions, how the concept has been measured, and examples of interesting findings and implications. We identify similarities, inconsistencies, and disagreements across fields and point out areas for future research. Our overall conclusion is that it is useful to consider metacognition as a broad umbrella concept across different domains and across basic and applied research. Nonetheless, we recommend that researchers be more specific and explicit about their approach and assumptions whenever using metacognition in their research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is the most prevalent internal modification of eukaryotic mRNA modulating gene expression. m6A modification is a dynamic reversible process regulated by three protein groups: methyltransferases (writers), demethylases (erasers), and m6A-binding proteins (readers). m6A modification is involved in all phases of RNA metabolism, including RNA folding, stability, splicing, nuclear exporting, translational modulation and degradation. Main body: In recent years, numerous studies have reported that abnormal m6A modification causes aberrant expression of important viral genes. Herein, we review the role of m6A in viral lifecycle and its contribution to the pathogenesis of human diseases. Particularly, we focus on the viruses associated with human diseases such as HIV-1, IAV, HBV, HCV, EBV and many others. Conclusions: A better understanding of m6A-virus relationship would provide new insights into the viral replication process and pathogenesis of human diseases caused by viruses. While a large body of research has focused on the effect of aging on false memory, there are to date only a few studies that addressed this question in the field of a particular kind of memory error, boundary extension (BE), which refers to the tendency to overestimate the expanse of a previously perceived scene. This research was conducted in an exploratory perspective and pursued the objective of investigating the cognitive mechanisms involved in this phenomenon, in both young and older adults. The performances in working memory and executive functioning tasks were correlated with those of a classic BE task. While young and older adults seem to extrapolate spatial layout in equivalent proportions, BE might be due to different mechanisms at different ages: while the essential determinant of BE would be executive functioning in young adults, some of our data suggest that it would be intellectual efficiency in the elderly. Metacognition is central to children's cognitive development. However, there is conflicting evidence about children's ability to accurately monitor their performance and subsequently control their behavior. This is of particular interest for mathematics topics on which children exhibit persistent misconceptions—that is, when children's knowledge of a topic is inaccurate, yet resistant to change. This study investigated elementary school children's metacognitive regulation on mathematical equivalence problems (N = 52, ages 6.7–9.8 years), including their ability to accurately monitor their certainty and their ability to control their behavior by making strategic help-seeking decisions. Results revealed that children were exceedingly confident—even when their answers were incorrect—resulting in relatively low accurate monitoring scores. However, their help-seeking decisions were largely strategic—reflecting children's tendency to not ask for help when feeling confident—resulting in relatively high control scores. Additionally, individual differences in accurate monitoring and in strategic control were positively correlated with children's comprehensive knowledge of mathematical equivalence, and the correlation with accurate monitoring held up after controlling for baseline accuracy, certainty, and help-seeking. Collectively, these results suggest that children may face unique, but critically important, metacognitive challenges when solving mathematical equivalence problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The latent state of the human herpesvirus varicella zoster virus (VZV) has remained enigmatic and controversial. While it is well substantiated that VZV persistence is established in neurons after the primary infection (varicella or chickenpox), we know little of the types of neurons harboring latent virus genomes, if all can potentially reactivate, what exactly drives the reactivation process, and the role of immunity in the control of latency. Viral gene expression during latency has been particularly difficult to resolve, although very recent advances indicate that it is more restrictive than was once thought. We do not yet understand how genes expressed in latency function in the maintenance and reactivation processes. Model systems of latency are needed to pursue these questions. This has been especially challenging for VZV because the development of in vivo models of VZV infection has proven difficult. Given that up to one third of the population will clinically reactivate VZV to develop herpes zoster (shingles) and suffer from its common long term problematic sequelae, there is still a need for both in vivo and in vitro model systems. This review will summarize the evolution of models of VZV persistence and address insights that have arisen from the establishment of new in vitro human neuron culture systems that not only harbor a latent state, but permit experimental reactivation and renewed virus production. In this paper, superhydrophobic and antibacterial fabric is fabricated via the sequential deposition of polydopamine (PDA), quaternized nanosilica particles and hexadecyltrimethoxy silane (HDTMS). The epoxypropyl dodecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (EPDDAC)-modified silica particles simultaneously contributed to the antibacterial activity and generated a rough surface on the textiles. According to the results, the obtained fabric showed excellent superhydrophobicity, good washability, and high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This paper describes the unique challenges that students with learning disabilities (LD) experience in science studies and addresses the question of the extent to which science teachers are willing and prepared to teach in inclusive classrooms. We employed the theory of planned behavior (TPB), according to which behavioral intentions are a function of individuals' attitudes toward the behavior, their subjective norms, and their perceived control—i.e., their perception of the simplicity and benefits of performing the behavior. The study comprised 215 junior high school science teachers, who answered a TPB-based quantitative questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to support and enrich the findings and conclusions. We found that teachers held positive attitudes and were willing to adapt their teaching methods (perceived control), which correlated and contributed to their behavioral intention. In terms of subjective norms, however, they felt a lack of support and ongoing guidance in providing the appropriate pedagogy to meet the needs of students with LD. We therefore recommend that educational policy makers and school management devote attention and resources to providing professional training and appropriate instructional materials and to establishing frameworks for meaningful cooperation between the science teachers and special education staff. This could ensure the efficient cooperation and coordination of all the involved parties and send a positive message of support to the science teachers who are the actual implementers of change. Objectives: The aim of our study was to identify and predict patients at risk of impeded mandibular third molar eruption and potential relation between the third molar roots and the mandibular canal, based on molar angulations in an early development stage.Setting and Sample Population: A total of 1011 adolescent orthodontic patients were included in this longitudinal study.Materials and Methods: We analysed pre-eruptive rotational changes and root development of mandibular third molars on 2022 panoramic radiographs (two time-points). Five variables were evaluated: third molar eruption level, development stage, risk of relation between the third molar and the mandibular canal, the molar angulations and orthodontic treatment. The relation between early third molar angulation and mean annual angulation change was assessed using a linear mixed model. Logistic regression was applied to investigate a potential correlation of the radiographic variables with the eruption potential and risk of developing a relation between the third molar and the mandibular canal.Results: Mandibular third molar follicles with an initial angulation exceeding 27.0° relative to the second molar tend to progressively increase their angulation during further development. A significant correlation was found between the hemimandibular molar angulations and the probability of eruption (P < 0.0001). The second to first molar angulation was predictive for potential development of a relation with the mandibular canal (P = 0.005).Conclusion: From the present data, it appears that severely angulated mandibular third molars (>27.0°) have a minimal chance of future eruption and a maximal risk of developing a relation with the mandibular canal. The present study aimed to investigate the expression of microRNA-495 (miR-495) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues and cells, as well as its function on the proliferation of lung cancer cells. The expression of miR-495 in 122 pairs of NSCLC tissues and matched paracarcinoma tissues, as well as in human lung cancer cell lines (A549, H460, H1650, H520 and SK-MES-1) and the normal human pulmonary bronchial epithelial cell line 16HBE was determined using reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). As predicted by bioinformatics analysis, high mobility group A2 (HMGA2) may be a potential target gene of miR-495. In addition, the regulatory function of miR-495 on its target gene HMGA2 was evaluated using a dual-luciferase reporter assay, RT-qPCR and western blotting. Furthermore, the effect of miR-495 on the proliferation of A549 lung cancer cells was investigated using a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. The results demonstrated that the expression of miR-495 in NSCLC tissues and cells was significantly downregulated compared with the control. In addition, downregulated expression of miR-495 was associated with tumor differentiation, lymph node metastasis and tumor, node and metastasis staging. Additionally, a dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that miR-495 could directly associated with the 3′-untranslated region of HMGA2. Upregulated expression of miR-495 significantly downregulated the mRNA and protein expression levels of HMGA2 in A549 cells. Furthermore, the results of CCK-8 assay revealed that upregulated expression of miR-495 significantly suppressed the proliferation of A549 cells; HMGA2 overexpression reversed this inhibition. In summary, the findings of the present study demonstrated that miR-495 was downregulated in NSCLC tissues and cells. N 6 -methyladenosine (m 6 A) is the most prevalent posttranscriptional modification in eukaryotic mRNAs. Dynamic and reversible m 6 A modification regulates gene expression to control cellular processes and diverse biological functions. Growing evidence indicated that m 6 A modification is involved in the homeostasis of host and microbes (mostly viruses and bacteria). Disturbance of m 6 A modification affects the life cycles of viruses and bacteria, however, these microbes could in turn change host m 6 A modification leading to human disease including autoimmune diseases and cancer. Thus, we raise the concept that m 6 A could be a "messenger" molecule to participate in the interactions between host and microbes. In this review, we summarize the regulatory mechanisms of m 6 A modification on viruses and commensal microbiota, highlight the roles of m 6 A methylation in the interaction of host and microbes, and finally discuss drugs development targeting m 6 A modification. Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. For children with persistent asthma, asthma control is largely related to controller medication adherence. With increasing calls for children to be involved in their own asthma management, there is a gap in our knowledge about the executive functioning of children with asthma. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between executive function, asthma, and medication adherence among school-age children with asthma. Methods: Thirty-one children ages 7 to 11 years (M = 8.9 ± 1.51) and one of their parents were enrolled in this study. Parents reported on asthma control while children reported on asthma control, medication beliefs, medication adherence, and completed an executive function battery that assessed inhibition, updating, shifting and planning. Results: Compared to the reference sample, children in this study had significantly lower composite scores in inhibition, t (31) = −3.84, p =. 001, and shifting, t (30) = −3.73, p =. 001. Controlling for age and asthma control, hierarchical regression analyses revealed that shifting accounted for 16% of the variance in child-reported medication adherence. Conclusions: This study revealed lowered executive functioning scores among school-age children with persistent asthma. Introduction. Posturograph tests are used to assess the vestibular reflex, which can be helpful for specialists who analyze body balance disorders. Despite many studies on the stability of body posture in pediatric patients, there is still a lack of reliable analysis. Aim. Performing a review of the literature to verify the relationship between balance and body posture as well as stomatognathic system as a part of motor system and the craniofacial complex using a posturograph. Material and Methods. A review of the literature has been carried out for the posturographic examination as a diagnostic tool. The following work is for reference only. A review of the Google Schoolar database and PubMed was made. Keywords used in the search are: (children) and (posturography, posture control, balance, temporomandibular joint). The authors took into account reports published in Polish and English. For the purposes of this review, strict criteria for the inclusion and exclusion of research work have been created. Results. The authors analyzed 335 research papers, of which 5 articles were qualified after the analysis. Studies show that there is a relationship between posturographic examination and postural disorders in children. However, the results are not conclusive and further research is necessary before these results can be considered as fully generalized. Summary. It is necessary to standardize the research using a posturograph. There is a need for further research due to the lack of standardized measurements showing norms for individual age groups. A constraint on understanding the pathogenesis of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is the limited number of tools to localize infected cells. The amount of detectable virus, visualized in the past either by immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization (ISH), has been modest in fixed or frozen tissues. This complicates our understanding of the widespread lymphoid proliferation, epithelial necrosis/apoptosis, and arteritis-phlebitis that characterize MCF. In this work, we developed a probe-based in situ hybridization assay targeting 2 ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) genes, as well as their respective transcripts, in formalin-fixed tissues. Using this approach, OvHV-2 nucleic acids were detected in lymphocytes in MCF-affected animals following both natural infection (American bison and domestic cattle) and experimental infection (American bison, rabbits, and pigs). The probe did not cross-react with 4 closely related gammaherpesviruses that also cause MCF: alcelaphine herpesvirus 1, alcelaphine herpesvirus 2, caprine herpesvirus 2, and ibex–MCF virus (MCFV). No signal was detected in control tissues negative for OvHV-2. ISH will be of value in analyzing the natural progression of OvHV-2 infection in time-course studies following experimental infection and in addressing the pathogenesis of MCF. Alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 (AlHV‐1) is a gammaherpesvirus carried asymptomatically by wildebeests (Connochaetes sp.) in sub‐Saharan Africa. Although asymptomatic in wildebeest, AlHV‐1 infection in a number of other ruminant species causes a severe and fatal lymphoproliferative disease named wildebeest‐derived malignant catarrhal fever (WD‐MCF). Several endangered species of captive ruminants are highly susceptible to developing WD‐MCF if infected by AlHV‐1, which is a critical concern in zoos, game reserves and wildlife parks where wildebeests are also kept in captivity. Here, we investigated the seroprevalence of AlHV‐1 in 52 captive wildebeests randomly sampled from five different zoos in France. We found 46% (24/52) seropositive animals and detected AlHV‐1 DNA in one of them, demonstrating that AlHV‐1 infection is present in captive wildebeests in France. In an interesting manner, the repartition of seropositive wildebeests was not homogenous between zoos with 100% (20/20) of seronegative animals in three parks. These results further highlight the importance of considering WD‐MCF as a threat for clinically susceptible species and encourage for testing AlHV‐1 infection in captive wildebeests as a management control strategy. Objective: To obtain the opinion of British Orthodontic Society (BOS) members in relation to possible patterns of prescription of orthodontic extractions over the past 5-10 years and to relate any changes identified to treatment objectives, facial and smile aesthetics, and treatment strategies and adjuncts. Design: Cross-sectional questionnaire. Setting: On-line survey of BOS members. Methods: A 14-item on-line questionnaire was sent to orthodontic practitioners for completion. The questionnaire covered demographics, possible changes in frequency of prescribed extractions with specific information concerning the effect of patient age, and the influence of other factors including alternative approaches to space creation, evolving treatment mechanics, smile and facial aesthetics, and retention protocols. Results: Two hundred and eight responses were obtained with 95.6% (n = 199) reporting reduced extraction prescription over the last 5-10 years. Overall, 29.9% and 35.5% felt that their threshold for extractions had increased by more than 2 mm in adolescents and adults, respectively. Facial (n = 145; 69.7%) and smile (n = 127; 61.1%) aesthetics, and increased use of inter-proximal reduction (n =  102; 49%) were the factors most frequently reported as having either a moderate or major influence on this trend. Based on ordinal logistical regression analyses, no significant relationship was found between threshold for extractions and work setting (P =  0.675; O.R. 0.51; 95% CI: 0.39, 1.85) or level of orthodontic experience (P =  0.15; O.R. 1.02; 95% CI: 0.15, 1.05), although a higher threshold for extractions was more likely among users of conventional than self-ligating brackets (P =  0.001; O.R. 4.74; 95% CI: 1.95, 11.5). Conclusions: A reduced tendency to prescribe orthodontic extractions over the past 5-10 years among British Orthodontic Society members was identified. This study investigates the relationship between metacognition and achievement goals which may influence mathematical modeling competency in students of mathematics education programs. The current study employs 538 students of mathematics education program; 483 (89.8%) of whom are male and 55 (10.2%) are aged from 18 years old to 22 years old. The study follows a correlational research design to investigate and measure the degree of relationship amongst mathematical modeling competencies, achievement goals and metacognition. Results indicate that achievement goals and metacognition positively influence mathematical modeling competency. Moreover, four metacognition dimensions including awareness, planning, cognitive strategy and self-checking are positive partial mediators because they increase the association between achievement goals and mathematical modeling competency. Various functionalised silica materials have been investigated as uranium extractants from sulfuric acid solutions. Silica was grafted with zero, one or two amido and phosphonate groups either directly or by peptide coupling. The role of the residual functions (silanol, amine and amide) was evaluated. Our results show that the uranium extraction efficiency of materials bearing residual silanol or amide groups may be affected by the presence of molybdenum. Comparing the performance of materials with different numbers of phosphonic acids on the phosphonate group revealed that only those with a monoacid function extract uranium efficiently. Among these materials, those with a diamido phosphonate ligand demonstrated the highest selectivity for uranium versus iron. Adjusting the length and steric hindrance of the alkyl chains of the amido and the phosphonate group, the best extraction capacity and selectivity versus iron were achieved with a butyl group on the phosphonate and an ethyl group on the ternary amide of the diamido phosphonate ligand. Finally, the [ligand]/[U] ratio was found not to vary with the alkyl chain at the end of the amido group or with the bridge length between the carbamoyl monophosphonate extracting group and the amidopropyl anchor to the silica, suggesting that the extraction mechanism remains unchanged. Aim: This study sought to identify the impact of a maths intervention aimed at enhancing performance, self-concept and self-regulation, while reducing negative emotional responses. Method: A quantitative, between-group repeated-measure experimental design was used to investigate differences between the groups over time. One-hundred-and-forty-four Year 4 pupils (mean age 8.09 years) from eight schools were matched and randomly allocated to intervention or waiting-list control groups. Trained Teaching Assistants delivered the intervention in small groups for four weeks. Performance, self-regulation, self-concept and anxiety in maths were measured pre- and post-intervention. Findings: Mixed ANOVA found a significant difference in maths performance and in the strategising and focusing sub-behaviours of self-regulation. No significant differences in maths anxiety and self-concept were established, although exploratory investigation identified a significant impact on males' maths self-concept. Limitations: The placebo effect, variable delivery, alongside appropriate maths anxiety and self-regulation measures in this age group, potentially influenced the results. Conclusions: The intervention indicates promising results with respect to maths performance; however further refinements of the affective elements are proposed. Mathematical skills are essential for young people to attain academic results needed for further study and employment. Recent changes to the English National Curriculum have put an increased emphasis on pupils explaining the reasoning behind answers in maths. This is a skill that can be developed by improving metacognitive skills. The authors report on an in-class programme for small group work, based on prior studies that utilised metacognition to support maths. An evaluation was conducted including a focus group interview and observation, modelling and feedback sessions over approximately 10 weeks. Results from interview analysis showed a positive impact both on staff practice and pupils’ independent problem solving. Adaptations based on research findings were made to the programme and handbook. This programme represents a flexible, inclusive and low resource option for schools to address new challenges posed by the National Curriculum in times of budget cuts and increased time pressure. Recent research indicates that parental behaviours may influence the development of executive functions (EFs) during early childhood, which are proposed to serve as domain-general building blocks for later classroom behaviour and academic achievement. However, questions remain about the strength of the association between parenting and child EFs, more specifically which parental behaviours are most strongly associated with child EFs, and whether there is a critical period in early childhood during which parental behaviour is more influential. A meta-analysis was therefore conducted to determine the strength of the relation between various parental behaviours and EFs in children aged 0 to 8 years. We identified 42 studies published between 2000 and 2016, with an average of 12.77 months elapsing in the measurement of parent and child variables. Parental behaviours were categorised as positive (e.g. warmth, responsiveness, sensitivity), negative (e.g. control, intrusiveness, detachment) and cognitive (e.g. autonomy support, scaffolding, cognitive stimulation). Results revealed significant associations (ps < .001) between composite EF and positive (r = .25), negative (r = −.22) and cognitive (r = .20) parental behaviours. Associations between cognitive parental behaviours and EFs were significantly moderated by child age, with younger children showing a stronger effect size, whereas positive and negative parental behaviours showed a stable association with EFs across ages. We conclude that modest, naturally occurring associations exist between parental behaviours and future EFs and that early childhood may be a critical period during which cognitive parental behaviour is especially influential. Semaphorins form a family of secreted and membrane-bound molecules that were identified originally as axonal guidance factors during neuronal development. Given their wide distribution in many including mature tissues, semaphorin 4D (sema4D) and its main functional receptor plexin B1 (plxnB1) are expected to fulfill additional functions that remain to be uncovered. A main characteristic of the plexin receptor family is its ability to reorganize the cytoskeleton. PlxnB1 specifically may directly interact with Rho family GTPases to regulate F-actin driven pathways in cells in culture. Diurnal clearance phagocytosis by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of photoreceptor outer segment fragments (POS) is critical for photoreceptor function and longevity. In this process, rearrangement of RPE cytoskeletal F-actin via activation of the Rho family GTPase Rac1 is essential for POS internalization. Here, we show a novel role in POS phagocytosis by RPE cells in culture and in vivo for plexin B1 and its ligand sema4D. Exogenous sema4D abolishes POS internalization (but not binding) by differentiated RPE cells in culture by decreasing the GTP load of Rac1. In the rat eye, sema4D localizes to retinal photoreceptors, while PlxnB1 is expressed by neighboring RPE cells. At the peak of diurnal retinal phagocytosis after light onset, plxnB1 phosphorylation and sema4D levels are reduced in wild-type rat retina in situ but not in mutant RCS rat retina in which the RPE lacks phagocytic activity. Finally, increased POS phagosome content after light onset is observed in the RPE in situ of mice with either plxnB1 or sema4D gene deletion. Altogether, our results demonstrate a novel physiological function for sema4D/plxnB1 signaling in RPE phagocytosis serving as attenuating brake prior to light onset whose release enables the diurnal phagocytic burst. The purpose of this study was to enhance our understanding of the relationship between collaborative talk and metacognitive talk during group mathematical problem-solving. Research suggests that collaborative talk may mediate the use of metacognitive talk, which in turn is associated with improved learning outcomes. However, our understanding of the role of group work on the individual use of metacognition during problem-solving has been limited because research has focused on either the individual or the group as a collective. Here, primary students (aged nine to 10) were video-recorded in a naturalistic classroom setting during group mathematical problem-solving sessions. Student talk was coded for metacognitive, cognitive and social content, and also for collaborative content. Compared with cognitive talk, we found that metacognitive talk was more likely to meet the criteria to be considered collaborative, with a higher probability of being both preceded by and followed by collaborative talk. This work describes the liquid-liquid extraction of uranium (U) from 3 mole L-1 nitric acid media by N, N-di(2-ethyl hexyl) hexanamide (DOHA) in dodecane and subsequent determination of uranium using arsenazo III as a chromogenic reagent. Different factors (nitric acid, DOHA, metal ion concentration, salting out effect, temperature and shaking time) affecting the extraction /stripping process, were investigated. The investigation showed that the extraction is independent of the conc. of metal ions in the range of 5 to 300 μg mL-1 and inversely dependent upon the temperature. The desired species so extracted were found to have a stoichiometric composition as UO2(NO3)2.DOHA and UO2(NO3)2.2DOHA at lower and higher concentration of extractant respectively. Uranium could be stripped back from organic phase by using 0.1 mole L-1 ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) and the extraction was found to be quantitative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The effectiveness of intraoral appliances (IOA), maxillary expansion (ME), and maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) in the treatment of children and adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has not yet been adequately assessed. Methods: An umbrella review was performed based on established guidelines for evidence-based medicine. Data synthesis was performed only from randomized controlled trials with Paule-Mandel random-effects meta-analyses / meta-regressions using mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and was followed by the qualitative evaluation of the meta-evidence. Results: 29 systematic reviews were included, 7 of which provided quantitative data. IOA were effective in improving apnea hypopnea index (AHI) compared to both, placebo appliances (12 trials; 525 patients; MD = -11.70; 95% CI: [-15.38;-8.01]; p<0.001) and no treatment (1 trial; 24 patients; MD = -14.30; [-21.59; -7.01]; p<0.001). Only the former comparison was supported by robust meta-evidence. Effectiveness of IOA as measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, on the other hand, was not supported by robust meta-evidence. No randomized or prospective controlled trials were found on the effectiveness of ME (conventional or surgically assisted) and MMA. Conclusion: Intraoral appliances are effective in reducing AHI and their use is substantiated by robust evidence. There is no evidence from high-quality research to support treatment with ME (conventional or surgically assisted) or MMA in patients with OSA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There is a wealth of studies of somatic and mental illness among prisoners, but little on older prisoners and their cognitive aging.Aims: Our study examines the cognitive performance of older male prisoners and its effect on their perceived health and quality of life.Methods: A total of 138 men aged 50 or over were recruited in seven French prisons and 138 men of similar ages from the general population. Two assessments of executive cognitive functions - the mini-mental state examination and the frontal assessment battery - were administered to each participant, together with self rating schedules of health (Nottingham Health Profile), subjective state of mental health and quality of life (the brief World Health Organisation Quality of Life Questionnaire).Results: There were very significant differences between the two groups in terms of cognitive performance, perceived health and quality of life. There was, however, no significant association between cognitive impairment and perceived health or quality of life.Conclusions: We found evidence that about a fifth of male prisoners in France had executive function test scores suggestive of at least moderately severe dementia and many others some evidence of cognitive impairments. Prisoners suffering from cognitive impairment do not necessarily seek help, perhaps not even considering that their health or quality of life to be affected. Communication deficits may also prevent their participation in prison activities which could prevent, slow or halt cognitive decline. The radiolytic degradation of three N,N-dialkyl amide ligands relevant to nuclear fuel reprocessing was studied. The degradation of these ligands: N,N di-2-ethyhexylbutyramide (DEHBA), N,N di-2-ethyhexylisobutyramide (DEHiBA) and N,N di-2-ethyhexyl-3-dimethylbutanamide (DEHDMBA) was examined to evaluate the effect of the structure on the formation of degradation products as well as to compare alpha induced degradation to gamma induced degradation. In situ alpha radiolysis by introduction of plutonium(iv) as the alpha source in the solution and ex situ gamma radiolysis with 60Co as the gamma source were compared. Upon identification of the main degradation products, a degradation scheme was proposed. The effects of radiation on the stability of Pu-monoamide complexes were discussed. Theoretical calculations were also performed to determine bond dissociation energy and estimate the relative strength of the bond in the molecule. The results show that neither the type of radiation (alpha vs. gamma) nor the structure modification (introduction of branching on the alkyl chain off the carbonyl carbon) of the molecule significantly impact the formation of degradation products under the conditions studied. Moreover, it was observed that the overall stability of the monoamide remains good and that Pu complexation is not greatly affected by either alpha or gamma irradiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The effectiveness of screening in colorectal cancer prevention depends on sustained participation rates. The objective of this study was to explore factors related to the longitudinal adherence of screening behavior in the context of a biennial population-based cancer screening program.Methods: Eight focus groups were conducted with individuals who were invited two or three consecutive times to a population-based colorectal cancer screening program using a fecal occult blood test and who agreed to participate in the program at least once (n = 45). The criteria used to select the study members included adherence to fecal occult blood test maintenance, factors regarding their initial participation in the colorectal cancer screening, sex, and contextual educational level.Results: The participants expressed a high level of satisfaction with the program; however, they showed a low level of understanding with respect to cancer screening. Consulting a general practitioner was cited by all participants as an important factor that mediated their final decision or influenced their behavior as a whole with regard to the program. Fear played a different role in the screening behavior for regular and irregular adherent participants. In the adherent participants, fear facilitated their continued participation in the screening program, whereas for the irregular participants, fear led them to avoid or refuse further screening. Having a close person diagnosed with colorectal cancer was a facilitator for the regular adherent participants. The irregular adherent participants showed some relaxation with respect to screening after a negative result and considered that further screening was no longer necessary.Conclusion: Considering the importance of primary healthcare professionals in the decision regarding sustained participation, it is important to better engage them with cancer screening programs, as well as improve the communication channels to provide accurate and balanced information for both health professionals and individuals. Cognitive and motor coordination skills of children with and without motor coordination impairments were examined with a one-year follow-up investigation. Initially, children were between 4 and 6 years old. Age-appropriate tests of executive functions (updating, switching, inhibition, interference control), motor coordination (the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2) and fitness (the Körperkoordinations-Test für Kinder) were administered in two consecutive years. Several background variables (age, socioeconomic status, medical support, clinical interventions, leisure activities) and potential moderators (nonverbal intelligence, reaction time, visual perception) were controlled. The matched sample consisted of 48 control children and 48 children with motor coordination impairments. The children’s executive functions dramatically improved during the one-year period. With regard to motor coordination performance, half of the impaired children caught up to the control children’s level (“remission group”), while the remaining half showed no improvement (“persisting group”). Compared to the persisting group, the children in the remission group showed markedly better interference control at both measurement points. The correlation between executive functions and motor coordination is significant in the persisting group, but not in the remission group. The results of the study are discussed in the light of the role of executive functions, especially inhibition processes, for the automatization of motor coordination tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The complex structure of a plutonium uranium refining by extraction (PUREX) process organic phase was characterized by combining results from experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. For the first time, the molecular interactions between tri- n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and the extracted solutes, as well as TBP aggregation after the extraction of water and/or uranyl nitrate, were described and analyzed concomitantly. Coupling molecular dynamics simulations with small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) experiments can lead to simulated organic solutions that are representative of the experimental ones, even for high extractant and solute concentrations. Furthermore, this coupling is well adapted for the interpretation of SWAXS experiments without preliminary hypothesis on the size or shape of aggregates. The results link together previous literature studies obtained for each level of depiction separately (complexation or aggregation). Without uranium, or at low metal concentration, almost no aggregation was observed. At high uranium concentration, organic phases contain small [UO2(NO3)2(TBP)2] n polymetallic aggregates (with n=2 to 4), in which the 1:2 U/TBP stoichiometry is preserved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The maxillary canine comes after the third molar as the most frequently included tooth. The prevalence of maxillary canine impact is 0.8%-2.8%. Buccally included canines represent a minority of cases, approximately 15%-32% of the cases depending on the authors. The placement in the arch is often more complex due to periodontal considerations, the frequent proximity of the lateral incisor root and the very precise control of the direction of the tension to be delivered by the device. In this clinical case, the combination of two innovative techniques-submerged temporary anchorage device and customized lingual device-made it possible to decrease both the complexity of the treatment for the practitioner and the constraints for the patient. The efficacy of metacognition as theory-based instructional principle or technique in general, and particularly in mathematics, is explored. Starting with an overview of different definitions, conceptualizations, assessment and training models originating from cognitive information processing theory, the role of metacognition in teaching and learning is critically discussed. An illustrative training program in kindergarten demonstrates that explicit and embedded metacognitive training can have an effect on mathematics learning even in very young children. Theoretical and methodological issues for future research, and recommendations for mathematics educators, are analyzed within the framework of the Opportunity-Propensity and Universal instructional design framework, demonstrating the relevance of metacognition in the domain of mathematics teaching, impacting children's learning of mathematics and their active involvement in their learning process. The human oncogenic virus Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is linked to Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a tumor of endothelial cells characterized by angiogenesis and invasiveness. KSHV genome encodes 25 mature microRNAs (miRNAs), but their roles in KSHV-induced tumor dissemination and angiogenesis are not fully understood. In this study, we constructed the sensor reporters of KSHV miRNAs and used a luciferase reporter assay to demonstrate the function of the mimics of KSHV miRNAs. Then, we examined the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and pro-angiogenic cytokines that are related to cell migration and angiogenesis in the KSHV 25 miRNAs transfected endothelial cells. We found that all KSHV miRNAs increased the expression of the transcripts of MMP1, MMP13, VEGFA, and VEGFR2 in different degrees, as well as the secretion of VEGFA protein in the supernatant of endothelial cells. Our results reveal that KSHV miRNAs contribute to regulating MMPs and expression of pro-angiogenic factors, thus, suggesting that these miRNAs might play a crucial role in KSHV-induced cell motility and angiogenesis. The study aimed at introducing current available techniques for enamel microcracks (EMCs) detection, and presenting a method for direct quantitative analysis of an individual EMC. Measurements of the detailed EMCs characteristics (location, length, and width) were taken from the reconstructed images of the buccal tooth surface (teeth extracted from two age groups of patients) employing a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and our derived formulas before and after ceramic brackets removal. Measured parameters of EMCs for younger age group were 2.41 µm (width), 3.68 mm (length) before and 2.73 µm, 3.90 mm after debonding; for older --4.03 µm, 4.35 mm before and 4.80 µm, 4.37 mm after brackets removal. Following debonding EMCs increased for both groups, however the changes in width and length were statistically insignificant. Regardless of the age group, proposed method enabled precise detection of the same EMC before and after debonding, and quantitative examination of its characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

N,N-Dialkylamides are extensively studied as alternative organic ligands to achieve the extraction and separation of uranium(vi) and plutonium(iv). We report here the coordination structures of the plutonium(iv) ion with N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)-n-butanamide as a function of nitric acid concentration in the aqueous phase. The coordination structure of Pu(iv) evolves gradually with increasing nitric acid concentration from an inner-sphere with two coordinated amide ligands toward an outer-sphere hexanitrate complex with only nitrate ions in the first coordination sphere and protonated amide ligands in the outer shell. Purpose: The goal was to evaluate the effects of Angle class II malocclusion treatment using the Forsus fatigue resistant device (FRD, 3M, St. Paul, MN, USA) on the position and angulation of mandibular third molars and retromolar space., Patients and Methods: In all, 58 class II patients (mean age 13.6 ± 1.8 years) treated with the FRD (FRD group) were compared with 51 class I patients (mean age 13.5 ± 1.6 years) who underwent orthodontic treatment (control group). A total of 109 mandibular third molars in the FRD group and 91 in the control group were evaluated. Changes in the retromolar space, angulation of the second (ɣ) and third molars (β), and the angle between these teeth (α) were assessed with panoramic radiographs taken at the beginning and the end of the treatment. Data were statistically analyzed., Results: At the end of the treatment, there were significant increases in ɣ and β in the FRD group and ɣ in the control group (p < 0.05). The decrease in α in the FRD group and increase in the control group were not significant (p > 0.05); however, this change led to a small significant change between the groups (p < 0.05). The retromolar space significantly increased in the FRD group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). No significant correlation was found between retromolar space and third molar uprighting in any of the groups (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Class II correction with FRD led to mesialization of the lower arch which provided an increase in the retromolar space. To enable the reduction of the environmental impact of nuclear energy generation, in this paper, we link the molecular and macroscopic behaviour of a functionalized material (TR@SBA15) used to extract uranium from sulfuric media. Two organic 3-[ N, N-di(2-ethylhexyl)carbamoyl]-3-[ethoxy(hydroxy)phosphoryl]propanoic acid (TR) molecules grafted onto the solid are involved in the extraction process and form a 2:1 TR-U complex. FTIR and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopic analyses show that the TR-U bond is realized through a phosphonate group in a monodentate fashion below pH 3, in agreement with the macroscopic observations. The first coordination sphere of the uranyl ion is completed by two monodentate sulfate ions and one water molecule. Above pH 3, the TR contribution decreases, and other inner-sphere complexes appear, which is consistent with the increased extraction observed on the macroscopic scale. Molybdenum, a competitor element, reduces the uranium extraction capacity but not its speciation, whereas polyoxomolybdates form inside the pores from the molybdenum in solution.
