While the literature on self-initiated expatriation (SIE) is well-established in management, no systematic investigation has yet been conducted to explore the specificities of early career expatriation. This review article aims to identify and analyse publications that uniquely focus on self-initiated expatriates, who decide to start their career abroad, either with little or no prior work experience. After identifying relevant publications in this specific research field, the authors discuss the personal career motivations and behaviours of early career self-initiated expatriates and the relevance of this phenomenon for the global workforce. The contributions of this article are twofold. First, they integrate the relevant research findings from recent decades on early career self-initiated expatriates. Second, they provide information about managing early career SIEs and propose a future research agenda to address the knowledge gap identified in this review and apply the findings to practice. Research on expatriate consumer behavior suggests that expatriates can be attracted to host country gastronomy, but sometimes they also suppress themselves from engaging with it. To shed light on these inconsistencies, this study draws on cross-cultural adjustment literature and social identity theory to explore under what circumstances expatriates increase their tendency to visit restaurants offering host country cuisine. To test the proposed model, a survey was conducted among 289 expatriates living in the six countries of the Greater Middle East. The data were analyzed by means of confirmatory factor analysis and hierarchical regression. The findings show that general adjustment is a positive predictor of more frequent visits to local restaurants. However, the findings also indicate that this relationship is conditioned by an expatriate's identity projects which are associated with cultural integration, cosmopolitanism, and international experience. Overall, novel extensions to the literature that investigates an expatriate's engagement with a host country's food and gastronomy is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to explore how professional–cultural knowledge is reciprocally shared between experienced expatriates and novice local nurses. To address this, the situated learning in practice lens is combined with social exchange lens. Design/methodology/approach: An interpretive case study methodology enabled an exploratory approach into the knowledge-sharing practices between experienced expatriates and novice local nurses in Saudi Arabia. Findings: Insights gained in the fieldwork suggest that professional–cultural knowledge sharing (KS) often occurred through three primary practices, namely, developing a professional–cultural meaning, forming clinical competency development opportunities and intervening in unfamiliar professional–cultural situations. In addition, two micro-level conditions shaped the reciprocity of professional–cultural KS practices between expatriate and local nurses, which were individual differences and situational conditions. Originality/value: This study advances and improves the understanding of two intertwined but rarely studied aspects of knowledge-sharing practices. Since the late nineteenth century, millions of Chinese laborers have left their hometowns in search of better lives overseas; many died before returning home. those close to the deceased expatriates strived to repatriate their remains, believing that it would bring peace to their souls. Most repatriated remains were first transported to Tung Wah Hospital until their townsfolks or relatives claimed them. In 2020, Tung Wah published 300 letters it received between 1929 and 1936. With these new materials, this article reveals details in the daily operations of the hospital's coffin home and the motivations of overseas Chinese nationals to repatriate remains. Although some remains were lost or unclaimed for various reasons, Tung Wah Hospital generally fulfilled its mission as a benevolent association and facilitated the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of deceased compatriots. Hungary has a unique role in international migration. The research introduces the facts and figures about foreign-born population in Hungary, focusing on migrants arriving to Hungary from the Carpathian Basin and their geographical networks, revealing the source areas of migration. The analysis interprets those involved in international migration in broad terms; as such, it is not focused solely on the movements of foreign citizens, but rather examines the effects of migration together with the naturalized Hungarians born abroad. The purpose of this exploratory study is to understand the nature and multidimensional challenges of cross-cultural adjustment as experienced by female Malaysian self-initiated expatriates (SIE) working as registered nurses (RNs) in Saudi Arabia. In-depth interviews with twenty-two Malaysian SIE RNs provided rich data on their adjustment experiences. The resulting data were subjected to a qualitative content analysis using Black, Mendenhall, and Oddou's (Black et al., 1991) cross-cultural adjustment (CCA) model. The results show that the nurses faced several challenges. Five themes emerged: learning to speak Arabic, adapting to a confrontational communication style, facing new work practices, dealing with homesickness and loneliness, and adjusting to new gender norms at work and in public. This study contributes to our understanding of expatriate adjustment by providing new interpretations of the cultural challenges faced by female SIEs and the nature of their adjustment process. The results also support the literature on expatriation by highlighting the challenges of cultural adjustment and giving specific information on the conditions and constraints facing female RNs in Saudi Arabia, a subject that has received little critical attention so far. Purpose: Drawing upon the cross-cultural adjustment (CCA) model and self-determination theory, this study investigated the influence of CCA (work, interactional, and general adjustment) and motivation (autonomous and controlled) on the innovative work behavior of self-initiated expatriates (SIEs). Design/methodology/approach: Multi-source data were collected from 213 SIEs and their supervisors working in the United Arab Emirates to provide an understanding of the role of SIEs' CCA and motivation and their innovative work behavior. Findings: Findings indicated that work, interactional, and general adjustment are positively related to innovative work behavior. Autonomous motivation positively predicts innovative work behavior, while controlled motivation does not. Additionally, autonomous motivation moderated the effects of work adjustment and interactional adjustment on SIEs' innovative work behavior, whereas controlled motivation moderates the effect of general adjustment on SIEs' innovative work behavior. Originality/value: SIEs are regarded as talents that have the skills and valuable knowledge gained from their international experience and can be utilized in organizations to perform innovative work behaviors. However, SIEs face adjustment challenges that may hinder their ability to be innovative. Despite their potential as innovation drivers in organizations, there are few studies on the factors that affect SIEs' innovative behavior. Purpose: Drawing upon the social exchange and psychological capital literature and applying a multilevel perspective, this paper examines how personal and organizational factors contribute to expatriates' adjustment and performance of international assignments in a terrorism-induced risky environment. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected using a non-probability sampling approach (e.g. purposive and subsequent snowball sampling). The authors tested the hypotheses using survey data of 138 expatriates with current international assignments in Pakistan. Findings: Expatriates' perceived organizational and risk-taking propensity influences their performance through improved adjustment. Moderating effects suggest that an individual's satisfaction with the received organizational rewards strengthens the risk-taking propensity to adjustment relationship; resilience strengthens the adjustment to performance relationship. Originality/value: This study extends existing expatriation literature by focusing on a specific type of risk factor pertinent to international assignments, i.e. terrorism. Integrating individual and organizational factors that influence adjustment and subsequent performance provides a clear picture rather if such factors are operationalized separately in the terrorism-induced risky environment context. Objectives: To explore relationship among perceived stress regarding loneliness, interpersonal trust and institutional trust of expatriates during the early COVID-19 period (from 30th March to 30th May 2020). Methods: Data from 21,439 expatriates were extracted from COVIDiSTRESS global survey. The outcome variable was perceived stress. The explanatory variables were age, perceived loneliness, trust (interpersonal and institutional). Pairwise correlation, and structural equation modelling were used to determine relationship among outcome and explanatory variables. Results: The majority of the expatriates were female (73.85%), married (60.20%), had college degree (47.76%), and employed (48.72%). Over 63% of the total expatriates reported that the COVID-19 pandemic changed their lives. The average age of the respondents was 40.4 years (± 13.7), and the average score of perceived stress, loneliness, interpersonal and institutional trust were 25.5, 7.4, 14.2 and 40.4, respectively. We found a moderate correlation of perceived stress with age, perceived loneliness, interpersonal trust and institutional trust (p < 0.001). They were also found moderately related to each other. Structural equation modelling evaluated that a lack of trust can cause loneliness among expatriates, which later lead to perceived stress. Interpersonal trust was more likely to be associated with stress than institutional trust, whereas perceived loneliness mediated between both trusts and perceived stress. Conclusion: Perceived stress can be reduced through trusting others and alleviating the loneliness. Making strong linkage among migrants as well as between migrants and local community is important to ensure proper mental wellbeing of expatriates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little research examines host country national (HCN)-expatriate interaction from the HCN's perspective. Our study contributes to theory and practice by introducing the concept of 'HCN-expatriate interaction quality', one that has received little attention in the literature. Drawing on the Intergroup Contact Theory, we examine the mediating role of HCN-expatriate interaction quality between the HCN's on-the-job interaction with and support to the expatriate, as well as two moderating effects: off-the-job interaction with the expatriate and perceived expatriate receptivity towards support. Further, we examine how different types of the HCN's prior international experiences enhance interaction quality with and support to the expatriate. Minna's maiden name, Badrian, suggests a possible connection to the author's known Badrian ancestors from two families living in Silesia, Prussia. Migration is a topic of extreme importance today and an intrinsic part of the culture of many societies, particularly those with international/colonial ties. While there are migratory paths that cross the entire world, the present study focuses on the journey from Portugal to Colombia. We seek to study the pull forces in Colombia that motivate the migration of Portuguese citizens, starting by analyzing the migratory course between the two countries in order to gauge the motivations and challenges for this path. A qualitative method of data analysis was used, using interviews with Portuguese migrants in Colombia and other secondary materials. The results suggest that the main motivations for the exit of Portuguese from their country relate to the lack of opportunities and low quality of life, mainly at the financial level. However, one might conclude that the great pull factors in Colombia are precisely the growing volume of opportunities for professional development and entrepreneurs, the economic benefits, and Colombia's environment and culture. Literature in policing has mostly overlooked the antecedents of prejudice, especially those who choose a police career. Such a choice is important given the results of prejudice that might cause police misconduct toward regular migrants, irregular migrants, and refugees. This study aims to examine the factors that explain prejudice among police cadets toward other ethnic groups. This study's data come from a survey of 725 police cadets in three police vocational schools in Turkey. We employed structural equation modeling to examine the antecedents of prejudice toward foreigners within the framework of intergroup threat theory. More specifically, in this study, we included factors such as anomie, authoritarianism, and nationalism and participants' symbolic and realistic threat perceptions in shaping prejudice toward foreigners. Due to the decreasing population growth rate, some cities have struggled to increase their populations, and attracting foreigners as residents may be considered an alternative solution to this problem. The present study aims to investigate the relationships among the city image as a tourism city, place identity, quality of life domains, overall life satisfaction, and intention to recommend short- or long-term overseas migration to a city while controlling for respondent characteristics. Using a data set obtained from a foreign resident survey conducted by the metropolitan government of Seoul, South Korea, this study finds that despite differences in the influences of the explanatory variables, the intention to recommend overseas migration is most strongly related to place identity, followed by city image. Of the quality of life domains, the influence of the social environment is the strongest and positive, while residential environment and educational environment are negatively related. Introduction: There are various difficulties in treating foreign patients; however, the existing educational programs are still insufficient for addressing this issue. The purpose of this study is to investigate what difficulties are encountered in the treatment of foreigners in emergency departments, and to create scenarios for simulation-based education using real-life cases. Methods: A cross-sectional anonymous survey to 457 emergency departments was conducted in 2018. Additionally, we conducted a survey of 46 foreign residents who had visited hospitals for treatment in Japan. The data was analysed quantitatively, and the narrative responses were thematically analysed. Results: Of the 141 hospitals that responded (response rate: 30.9%), 136 (96.5%) answered that they had treated foreign patients. There were 51 and 66 cases with cultural and linguistic difficulties, respectively. In the qualitative analysis, different ideas/beliefs towards treatments or examinations (51.0%) and communication with non-English speaking patients (65.2%) were most common categories in the cases with cultural and linguistic difficulties, respectively. The survey of 46 foreign residents on the surprising aspects of Japanese healthcare showed, 14% mentioned difference in treatment plans between own country and Japan, 12% each mentioned a lack of explanation by medical staff, and a lack of privacy in the examination room. Based on the survey results, we created 2 scenarios of simulation. Conclusions: Scenarios of simulation-based education using real-life cases may be effective materials for cultivating cultural awareness of medical staff. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This Article contributes to that reimagining by cbronicling a compelling alternative worldview witb a venerable historical pedigree-tbat of a quintessentially American right to migrate. During tbe Founding Era, American statesmen described tbe impoverished subjects of Europe's monarchies as protagonists in an unfolding world-historical drama of buman liberation and enlightenment, shaking off the servitude and privations of the Old World and reinventing themselves as jree, equal, and independent republican citizens. Although tbe scope of that vision originally was limited to Ewope, it nevertheless seeded afield of American national identity that eventually would yield a genuinely universal (though ultimately unconsummated) right to migrate to the United States and be incorporated within tbe American political community. Following tbe Civil War, leading congressional architects of Reconstruction sought to expand the right to migrate beyond Europe to an emerging global theater of cosmopolitan culture, commerce, and labor. To tbe liberal internationalists of the postbellum era, migration was not a discrete, constitutionally exceptional subject of federal policymaking; rather. it was integral to the monumental post-Civil War project of renovating and reinvigorating American liberty, equality, and citizenship. Theirs was a worldview in wbicb federal sovereignty and citizenship were paramount, yet tbe border between citizen and alien was botb porous and transitory, and in which immigrants were regarded as "Americans in waiting." Tbat worldview serves as a jorceful rebuttal to tbe Court's presumption tbatpreserving national sovereignty and security requires that immignition law occupy a constitutional world apan. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the transformations in the frameworks of reflection and action that promoted territorial documentation policies, developed in coordination between the National Direction of Migration and the provincial and municipal governments in the southern area of Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. Based on an ethnographic approach to the activities of a local office, the Dirección de Entidades y Colectividades de La Plata, and interviews with its main managers, we focus on the interrelation between documentation policies and the visibility (and production) of the electoral potential of foreigners that crystallized during the implementation of these programs. Unlike the literature that focuses on the analysis of the intentions (explicit or implicit) of the laws and projects, and on the difficulties encountered in achieving the purposes stated in them, the originality of the article is given by its monitoring of positions, relationships, languages, and objects that were produced (to some extent unexpectedly) during their implementation. This strategy reveals that the documentary programs and the officials who carry them out have gradually become part of the networks of the so-called territorial policy, in which the relevance assigned to foreigners has increased. The fundamental shift in this dynamic is the progressive recognition of its electoral potential and the conceptualization of the migration issue as an area of strategic dispute for local and provincial political life. Thus, the main conclusion is that throughout the implementation of these programs, migration policy became politicized; that is, it acquired a "political" status in the consideration of different relevant actors. Acculturation is important in predicting expatriation success, especially for Chinese expatriates. Given the inconsistent findings regarding the effectiveness of cross‐cultural training (CCT) on expatriate acculturation, this study adopts the 'internal fit' perspective, which indicates that managerial practices jointly influence employees. Specifically, we investigate how CCT interacts with other internally aligned managerial components, including repatriation practice and leadership consideration, to affect expatriate acculturation. Two survey studies were conducted to test our hypotheses. We gathered cross‐sectional data from 178 Chinese expatriates from three multinational enterprises in study 1 and time‐lagged data from 230 Chinese expatriates from more than 200 multinational enterprises in study 2. Results demonstrate a positive relationship between CCT and expatriates' acculturation, with repatriation practice strengthening that relationship. Moreover, CCT, repatriation practice and leadership consideration promote expatriates' acculturation in a synergistic manner. Prior to the COVID‐19 Pandemic, the Gulf region was home to ~29 million foreign residents, an estimated 20–40% of whom were residing there in an irregular status. Most of them had skilfully devised strategies to survive in this irregular situation, with friends and relatives acting as essential support networks. The COVID‐19 Pandemic suddenly disrupted this well‐established social order. This article outlines the lived experiences of 26 irregular migrants residing in Kuwait when the Pandemic occurred. Twelve of our interviewees were planning to leave in response to the amnesty declared on 1 April, while 14 were planning to stay or were uncertain. Network support continued to provide an essential element in enabling their survival. Intermediaries such as kafeels (sponsors) were often unavailable or unwilling to provide assistance. The health and welfare of irregular migrants require special policy attention since they now face an enhanced risk of being apprehended and deported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Better understanding of the different phenotypes/subgroups of non-U.S. citizen kidney transplant recipients may help the transplant community to identify strategies that improve outcomes among non-U.S. citizen kidney transplant recipients. This study aimed to cluster non-U.S. citizen kidney transplant recipients using an unsupervised machine learning approach; Methods: We conducted a consensus cluster analysis based on recipient-, donor-, and transplant- related characteristics in non-U.S. citizen kidney transplant recipients in the United States from 2010 to 2019 in the OPTN/UNOS database using recipient, donor, and transplant-related characteristics. Each cluster's key characteristics were identified using the standardized mean difference. Post-transplant outcomes were compared among the clusters; Results: Consensus cluster analysis was performed in 11,300 non-U.S. citizen kidney transplant recipients and identified two distinct clusters best representing clinical characteristics. Cluster 1 patients were notable for young age, preemptive kidney transplant or dialysis duration of less than 1 year, working income, private insurance, non-hypertensive donors, and Hispanic living donors with a low number of HLA mismatch. In contrast, cluster 2 patients were characterized by non-ECD deceased donors with KDPI <85%. Consequently, cluster 1 patients had reduced cold ischemia time, lower proportion of machine-perfused kidneys, and lower incidence of delayed graft function after kidney transplant. Cluster 2 had higher 5-year death-censored graft failure (5.2% vs. 9.8%; p < 0.001), patient death (3.4% vs. 11.4%; p < 0.001), but similar one-year acute rejection (4.7% vs. 4.9%; p = 0.63), compared to cluster 1; Conclusions: Machine learning clustering approach successfully identified two clusters among non-U.S. citizen kidney transplant recipients with distinct phenotypes that were associated with different outcomes, including allograft loss and patient survival. This study examined the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on Japanese expatriates living in China. The survey period was from March 30 to July 31, 2021; responses were received via an online survey. An online survey gathered responses from 236 participants about the impact of COVID-19 on their work and life. While 80% of the participants responded that COVID-19 had impacted their work and life, 60% said that it had a physical or mental impact. Kruskal–Wallis test and Mann–Whitney U test were conducted to compare the effects of COVID-19 on job performance, including personal attributes. The impact of COVID-19 was associated with gender (p =.007), age (p =.010), occupation (p =.005), job title (p =.009), and living arrangements with or without a partner (p =.005). The impact was also correlated with age (p =.030), job position (p =.014), number of times the respondent had lived in Japan (p =.003), and number of years in Japan (p =.015). The most significant effect on mental and physical health was correlated with job position (p =.016). Thus, Japanese expatriates living in China were substantially affected by the COVID-19 epidemic; although, 60% of them said their region was easy to live in. Further, despite the Chinese government's strict isolation orders, they found the thorough testing and use of the coronavirus tracking app reassuring. This suggests the importance of providing not only mental care for expatriates during the COVID-19 epidemic but also prompt decision-making based on an accurate understanding of the local situation. Dubai is a metropolitan city that attracts many foreigners due to its growing economy and tourism. When many non-Muslims observe the Islamic culture and lifestyle, they become interested in learning more about the faith. This research focuses on non-Muslims and new Muslims in Dubai and how information about Islam is disseminated to them. It also examines the challenges they encounter when searching for information. Though the researcher employed a mixed-methods approach, this study highlights the quantitative analysis. A total of 541 survey responses were collected from expatriates residing in Dubai, UAE; their demographic profile was analysed, especially in relation to their media use. The research discovered that respondents had limited access to Islamic information and received minimal clarity on Islamic faith. The results also indicated their preferred choice of medium and sources, hence a media model was created covering radio with digital media to broadcast information for specific residents who were interested to learn about Islamic faith. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate how the gap between a multinational enterprise's (MNE) productivity and that of its competitor determines the utilization of expatriate managers in its foreign subsidiaries. Design/methodology/approach: The authors first develop a formal analytical model where expatriate managers are relatively more reliable and expensive while local managers are prone to job-hopping. The authors then test the predictions of the analytical model using subsidiary-level data of Korean MNEs. Findings: The findings show a positive relationship between the productivity gap and the share of expatriate managers in a foreign subsidiary. The empirical findings also show that the job position (middle versus top managers) is another key determinant of the utilization of expatriate managers. Originality/value: The results of this paper are consistent with the literature that finds that MNEs choose a governance structure that minimizes the hazard of opportunism in their subsidiaries, yet the paper reveals a novel aspect of the determinants of expatriate utilization. In policies and research, migrant children tend to be seen as underprivileged and vulnerable. This discourse ignores the more privileged migrant children, those labelled expatriates or third culture kids. Finland wants to attract skilled professionals from abroad. They are often accompanied by their children. Although the families typically intend to sojourn in the country temporarily, Finnish society tends to see them as ‘permanent immigrants’ who need to be integrated. This is visible in international schools that follow the national curriculum, including extensive Finnish language studies and exposure to Finnish culture. This article is based on an ethnographic study among expatriate children in an international school in a Finnish town. I ask how the integration aims affect the expatriate children’s lives, and how they navigate those aims. Using empirical examples, I elaborate on the contradiction between being a ‘privileged’ temporary expatriate child and being defined as an ‘underprivileged’ permanent immigrant. Drawing upon the ''happy-productive worker'' hypothesis and the Job Demands-Resources model, we examine whether expatriates' well-being mediates the association between expatriates' interaction adjustment and job satisfaction; and whether this indirect effect is moderated by expatriates' perceived accomplishment of the organizational goals for the assignment. Based on responses from 148 assigned expatriates we confirmed the expected indirect influence of expatriates' wellbeing and the moderated mediation of expatriates' accomplishment of organizational goals. This study offers implications for scholars studying subjective well-being in the international work context and organizations aiming to increase their global competitiveness without jeopardizing workers' well-being. Expatriates, or migrant workers, are employees who work outside their home country and reside in a foreign country for the purpose of work. They are often subject to job fraud, employment contract violations, and poor working conditions. These calamities are mainly due to language barriers, limited legal protection, and feeling inferior in their host countries. Many reports have indicated that minimum working and living standards for expatriates are not as adequately enforced as those for domestic employees. These issues may be elevated with the presence of an employment contract framework, which would enable better enforcement and wider visibility for both workers and employers. Thus, we propose a blockchain-powered framework to represent expatriate employment contracts as digital assets managed by smart contracts. It enables employers to create contracts to which employees agree in a decentralized, tamper-proof, transparent, and traceable manner. This framework facilitates auditability, tracking, and enhanced visibility of expatriate employment contracts and job history verification for both workers and employers. We provide a prototype implementation using the Hyperledger Fabric platform and analyze the framework qualitatively from scalability, efficiency, security, and privacy perspectives. This study examines the psychological contracts held by expatriates with low socioeconomic status. We develop and test a moderated mediation model that examines the direct relationship between organisational support and intention to leave via the mediating role of psychological contract fulfilment. We also examine the moderating role of transactional psychological contracts on this indirect relationship in a sample of 108 low-status expatriates in the United Arab Emirates. Our results validate the assumptions made in psychological contract theory on the direct effect of organisational support and contract fulfilment. However, contrary to our expectations, the findings revealed a positive relationship between contract fulfilment and intention to leave. This paper considers the issues facing expatriate instructors teaching English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) graduation seminars (commonly known as the "zemi" in Japan) in Japanese universities and aims to establish better conditions to build Communities of Practice. Since the term "graduation seminar" is widely used globally, and might lead to preconceptions from readers, zemi is the term that will be used in this paper as a common example of Japanese English. This class is one that typically involves aspects of academic mentoring, pastoral care and socialization that differentiate it from regular classes. Lacking any personal experience of the zemi, teachers educated overseas are likely to have different expectations of the system than their domestic colleagues and students, creating a significant challenge in how they design and implement programmes. To investigate these issues, 14 semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with expatriate teachers of EMI zemis. Common themes described by informants included difficulties in creating a cohesive syllabus with limited support, challenges posed by thesis supervision, and mixed feelings towards mentoring and pastoral care. The data also revealed unique opportunities afforded to foreign instructors of these classes, which were unlikely to be available if they had not been entrusted with teaching a zemi. This paper seeks to fill a gap in the literature and provide insights into how foreign instructors experience the zemi. The knowledge gained can be employed to help develop Communities of Practice for such teachers. It is also hoped it will be of significance to those interested in comparative education, faculty asked to teach within educational systems of which they do not have personal experience, and anyone who works with Japanese learners, either in Japan or as international students. The False Olaf claimed to be King Olaf II of Denmark and Norway, who had died at the age of seventeen in 1387. I provide (1) background on the real identity of the False Olaf (insofar as anything can be known); (2) a study of the beginnings of the imposture, including to what extent the impostor was coached; (3) some deductions on what letters the False Olaf had with him; (4) a theory on how he came to be given those letters; (5) the symbolism of the making and burning of the crown and the necklace; and (6) hypotheses on the meaning of the letters to the False Olaf's supporters. Our main purpose in Huitfeldt's expansion of the tale is the unlikely suggestion that the False Olaf and the real Olaf were milk-brothers. Huitfeldt acknowledges that pseudo-Olaf was Prussian, so for his account to hold on its own terms, the impostor's mother has to be either (1) a Danish wet nurse who migrated to Prussia and bore a son, or (2) a Prussian who migrated to Denmark, served as wet nurse, and then came home to give birth to pseudo-Olaf. The article investigates how personal technologies interact with the sociality of young people in a context of long-distance mobility. We focussed on a group of individuals – expatriates and internal migrants – who are highly mobile, multilingual, multicultural, sometimes also multinational, highly educated, and who extensively use personal technologies to support their sociality. The long-distance mobility of these young adults has been discussed so far in socio-economic terms, but scholars have substantially neglected to explore how these young persons manage their sociality and communication as well as the sustainability of their life in the long run. We adopted a qualitative approach and conducted 23 interviews with a convenience sample. The main results highlight three implications, due to the intensive use of personalised technologies: (a) when the spatial distance is great, close relationships are strengthened; (b) the relationships with new friends are evaluated less than those with the friends left behind; (c) the role played by digital media is only positive (not ambivalent as in sedentary contexts) since it is only thanks to these media that the young adults are able to manage their overall sociality. Moreover, these people tend to stay in a mobile status, which risks being detrimental for them. This article used a critical discourse approach to understand how linguistic practices in the South African media construct international immigrants of African origin. We created an 88 000-word corpus of online South African news articles on immigrants from 2008 to 2020, which we then uploaded onto a corpus analysis software, Sketch Engine. Through the software, we were able to generate patterns of language use in the construction of immigrant identity and subject position in the media. While most literature on South Africa has focused on the violence associated with xenophobia, this paper zeroes in on 'the language of xenophobia' to provide a good reflection of the sociological construction of 'self' and 'other' in the country. By examining the discursive practices of the media on foreign nationals, the paper maps out not only the circulation but also the reproduction of power, social relations and other sociologies behind the prejudices that inform xenophobia in all its various forms. In this article, we seek to exercise reflexivity in migration research by looking at the symbolic boundary work that sustains laypeople's understanding and use of specific labels. We do so through a qualitative, cultural sociological investigation of migration attitudes in Czechia. We explore the labels foreigner, migrant, and refugee, commonly used labels in Czech migration discourse. In short, we argue that research participants rely on different grounds for boundary work, informed by available cultural repertoires, when characterizing foreigners, migrants, and refugees. While boundary work related to the label foreigner calls upon criteria of citizenship and perceived cultural closeness, the boundary work concerning the other two labels—migrant and refugee—involves the moral criteria of deservingness. Our study addresses three major shortcomings in migration studies. First, the opinions of laypeople influence public policies and approaches to migration, yet in-depth qualitative studies of migration attitudes are scarce. Second, even though migration attitudes shape the character of the receiving context for people who cross borders, how laypeople engage with labels remains understudied. Finally, we heed the call for a 'reflexive turn' in migration studies, arguing that researchers must remain reflexive, not only about labels they use, but also how such labels are understood and used by research participants. It examines Romanticism that haunt the erotic and professional relations of protagonist William Crimsworth and his fixation on British Romantic poetry to resolve his incapacity for human engagement due to his repressed homosexuality. It analyzes his foreignness as an Englishman in Brussels, Belgium and response to the humiliations of his life through local geographical terms.

For dual-earner expatriate couples (DEECs), it is particularly challenging to achieve career satisfaction after relocating to another country and the associated career transitions. While studies have addressed the strenuous career pathways of individuals in DEECs, the identification and empirical analysis of resources that may contribute to the attainment of career satisfaction remains a desideratum. This research investigates the impact of self-enhancing humor and community embeddedness on individual career satisfaction and the crossover effects of humor on that of the partners in DEECs. Using data from 109 DEECs in Europe and Actor-Partner Interdependent Model (APIM), the results show that embeddedness in one’s community mediated the relationship between humor and career satisfaction. The study also unfolded the crossover effects of humor within couples: Men’s humor promoted their female partner’s community embeddedness, which, in turn, promoted women’s career satisfaction.
