Worldwide advances in computer techniques are not yet recognised in the practice of forensic medicine. A promising application is their use in making a three-dimensional reconstruction of the crime scene. This study analyses this technique in a homicide by firearm. Queries regarding the direction and number of shots, position of the victim inside the car when shot at and presence of the accused at the crime scene were answered by a scientific model. Similar reconstruction of the scene, nailing the accused in a heinous crime, has not previously been reported as a study or a case. The paper anticipates impetus to the growth of literature in criminology and forensic sciences. We investigate theoretically the ballistic motion of small legged insects and legless larvae after a jump. Notwithstanding their completely different morphologies and jumping strategies, some legged and legless animals have convergently evolved to jump with a take-off angle of 60°, which differs significantly from the leap angle of 45° that allows reaching maximum range. We show that in the presence of uniformly distributed random obstacles the probability of a successful jump is directly proportional to the area under the trajectory. In the presence of negligible air drag, the probability is maximized by a take-off angle of 60°. The numerical calculation of the trajectories shows that they are significantly affected by air drag, but the maximum probability of a successful jump still occurs for a take-off angle of 59–60° in a wide range of the dimensionless Reynolds and Froude numbers that control the process. We discuss the implications of our results for the exploration of unknown environments such as planets and disaster scenarios by using jumping robots.

Projectile injuries to the face deserve particular attention to evaluate for involvement of critical structures and functional elements and treat the devastating effects on facial aesthetics. Ballistic trauma to the maxillofacial region often has significant soft tissue and bony defects, creating a greater challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. The main goals of treatment of projectile injuries to the face are decreasing the amount of contaminants and nonviable tissue at the site, ensuring functionality, and restoring aesthetic appearance. There exists a lack of robust research on the subject. Soft tissue injuries from high-velocity projectiles have changed the perspective on treating acute injuries to the face and neck. Injuries encountered during both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom give the author pause to reflect upon a different wounding pattern than that encountered in stateside trauma centers. Given the dissemination of high-velocity weaponry by enemy combatants such as the improvised explosive device, mortar round, and high-velocity rifles, a higher incidence of facial wounds has been reported. In view of the influence of projectile-barrel coupling on tank firing accuracy, a finite element model of projectile-barrel coupling based on vibration theory was established. By defining user subroutines to simulate the change of the physical field of interior ballistics, the load condition under which the propellant gas radial pressure acts on the inner wall of the barrel and varies with the motion of the projectile is realized. On this basis, the dynamic characteristics of projectile-barrel coupling considering the radial effect of propellant gas pressure were studied. The reference targets such as cradle, projectile and muzzle were selected for analysis, and compared with the situation without considering the radial effect of propellant gas pressure. The results show that the motion trend of the projectile in the bore and the response law of muzzle vibration change greatly when considering the radial effect of propellant gas pressure and these changes may seriously affect the law of projectile dispersion. The radial effect of propellant gas pressure can cause stronger dynamic response, which cannot be ignored in the simulation of artillery firing process. This article proposes an interior ballistic interval optimization method with the consideration of parameter uncertainty. Interior ballistic parameters such as charge mass, web thickness, powder aperture and chamber volume are considered as design variables and described by interval number. A one-dimensional two-phase interior ballistic model is constructed, and the MacCormack scheme is used to calculate the interior ballistic parameters. A Chebyshev surrogate model is constructed to replace the one-dimensional two-phase interior ballistic model and applied to the optimization process. For each set of design variables, affine arithmetic is introduced to calculate the interval bounds of the performance index of the interior ballistic, avoiding nested double-loop optimization and improving computational efficiency. The Pareto-optimal solution is searched for by an improved non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular ballistics combines molecular biological, forensic ballistic, and wound ballistic insights and approaches in the description, collection, objective investigation, and contextualization of the complex patterns of biological evidence that are generated by gunshots at biological targets. Setting out in 2010 with two seminal publications proving the principle that DNA from backspatter collected from inside surfaces of firearms can be retreived and successfully be analyzed, molecular ballistics covered a lot of ground until today. In this review, 10 years later, we begin with a comprehensive description and brief history of the field and lay out its intersections with other forensic disciplines like wound ballistics, forensic molecular biology, blood pattern analysis, and crime scene investigation. In an application guide section, we aim to raise consciousness to backspatter traces and the inside surfaces of firearms as sources of forensic evidence. Covering crime scene practical as well as forensic genetic aspects, we introduce operational requirements and lay out possible procedures, including forensic RNA analysis, when searching for, collecting, analyzing, and contextualizing such trace material. We discuss the intricacies and rationales of ballistic model building, employing different tissue, skin, and bone simulants and the advantages of the "triple-contrast" method in molecular ballistics and give advice on how to stage experimental shootings in molecular ballistic research. This paper presents a numerical and an analytical approach for calculation of internal ballistics parameters through determination of thermal and gasdynamic characteristics. The calculated parameters are validated through experimental tests on a real weapon system. The internal ballistic calculations are provided for two types of propellants using an analytical and a numerical model. Calculations and tests are performed for an anti-material rifle 12.7 mm. Weapon and ammunition testing is carried out according to the permanent international commission standard. Theoretical and experimental results for the gunpowder gases pressure and the muzzle velocity are compared. The good agreements between the calculated and the measured pressures and velocities increase the reliability of the estimated gunpowder gas temperatures in the barrel. The film Fracture Phenomena in Glass is a noteworthy case of a film reuse: it was published in the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica (EC) in 1976, bearing the signature E 2355. In this instance, surprisingly, the Institut für den Wissenschaftlichen Film (Institute for Scientific Film [IWF]), which produced, edited, distributed, and archived the EC films, reused ballistic film recordings from World War II. Produced at the Ballistic Institute of the Berlin-Gatow Air War Academy in 1942–1943 under the direction of Hubert Schardin, they were first published in 1944 as C 433 by the National Socialist predecessor institution, the Reich Institute for Film and Images in Science and the Classroom (Reichsanstalt für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht [RWU]). This reuse suggests that at least some of the EC films bear witness to telling discrepancies in political, historical, and epistemological classification within a distinctive worldwide project of postwar visual film research. This essay considers the controversial role of the encyclopedist Gotthard Wolf and the institutional history of the RWU/IWF by looking at examples of the reuse—or nonreuse—of ballistic films and concepts. The simulation of the artillery interior and intermediate ballistics problem is performed to investigate the influence of a gas dynamics device, muzzle brake, on the muzzle hazard phenomena, such as flash and blast waves. The correlation of the chemical reactions with the characteristics of the muzzle flow field is analyzed by the simulation for a further understanding of the secondary combustion phenomenon of the muzzle flow. The novel structure of muzzle flow caused by the muzzle brake is presented by the simultaneous solution of the interior ballistics model and multi-species Navier-Stokes equations in order to analyze the influence of the muzzle brake structure on the chemical reactions. The secondary combustion of the muzzle flow due to the oxygen-supplement chemical reactions is obtained by the chemical reaction kinetic model. The interaction of the blast waves released from the muzzle brake is illustrated in detail and the mechanism of the formation of muzzle flash is analyzed. A new model has been defined that enables the estimation of the lethal radius (radius of efficiency) of HE (High Explosive) artillery projectiles against human targets. The model is made of several modules: CAD (Computer Aided Design) modeling, fragment mass distribution estimation, fragment initial velocity prediction, fragment trajectory calculation, effective fragment density estimation, and high explosive projectile lethal radius estimation. The results were compared with the experimental results obtained based on tests in the arena used in our country, and the agreement of the results was good. This model can be used in any terminal-ballistics scenario for high explosive projectiles since it is general, parametric, fast and relatively easy to implement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is important to know the process of hot spot creation to improve the safety of working with melted TNT. One of the probabilities is the air bubbles in TNT that melted during the firing and internal ballistics, which are the results of casting problems. Thus, in this paper, the accuracy of this probability was studied. Melted TNT is a highly viscous fluid, so in this study by improving the numerical code, the effects of the temperature‐dependent physical properties have been seen in the calculations. The results show that the viscosity work makes the bubble heated and rises, its temperature in comparison with the fluid environment. But the variations are a maximum of 4 °K. Therefore, it seems that the studied factors in this paper can′t be the reason for melted TNT undesirable ignition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In materials, energy can propagate by means of two limiting regimes: diffusive and ballistic. Ballistic energy transport can be fast and efficient and often occurs with a constant speed. Using twodimensional infrared spectroscopy methods, we discovered ballistic energy transport via individual polyethylene chains with a remarkably high speed of 1440 m/s and the mean free path length of 14.6 Å in solution at room temperature. Whereas the transport via the chains occurs ballistically, the mechanism switches to diffusive with the effective transport speed of 130 m/s at the end-groups attached to the chains. A unifying model of the transport in molecules is presented with clear time separation and additivity among the transport along oligomeric fragments, which occurs ballistically, and the transport within the disordered fragments, occurring diffusively. The results open new avenues for making novel elements for molecular electronics, including ultrafast energy transporters, controlled chemical reactors, and sub-wavelength quantum nanoseparators. The use of non-lethal weapons has spread worldwide, being introduced as an alternative to firearms in many countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom. Among non-lethal weapons, conducted electrical weapons have been adopted worldwide, to control unruly suspected criminals or to neutralise violent situations. The stun gun belongs to this category and is the most widely available, with more than 140,000 units in use by police officers in the field in the US, and an additional 100,000 electrical stun guns owned by civilians worldwide. In Italy, the use of conducted electrical weapons by law enforcement has only recently been introduced, with private use and commercialisation still prohibited, mainly due to controversies related to the potential dangers of such devices.Before the official adoption, several experiments had to be carried out, with mechanisms that reproduced the ballistics of the stun gun. Recent instances of the destruction of cultural assets in conflict zones have demonstrated the need to develop methods which will allow for the assessment of damage to heritage stone in the field. In particular, non-destructive methods would be invaluable when working on sites damaged by contemporary ballistics. Permeability (TinyPerm 3) and surface hardness (Equotip) surveys of stone damaged by 7.62 × 39 mm (AK-47) projectiles were undertaken to determine the ability of these methods to identify the spatial distribution of damage patterns such as shear faces and surface fractures. Results demonstrate the ability of surface hardness surveys to distinguish between non-impacted surfaces of the target stone and surfaces which shattered/sheared upon impact. Whilst spatial distribution analysis (“heat mapping”) of Equotip data did not correlate directly with surface fractures, permeability data heat maps were found to be indicative of surface fracture distribution. The data suggests that compaction of the stone matrix at the impact crater results in a lesser reduction of hardness in this area relative to the wider damaged surface. Surveys of impacted stone using the methods outlined here can identify damage patterns that are not visible to the naked eye, thus aiding in damage identification on fragile sites.

Abstract Large pyroclasts—often called ballistic projectiles—cause many casualties and serious damage on people and infrastructures. One useful measure of avoiding such disasters is to numerically simulate the ballistic trajectories and forecast where large pyroclasts deposit. Numerical models are based on the transport dynamics of these particles. Therefore, in order to accurately forecast the spatial distribution of these particles, large pyroclasts from the 2015 Aso Strombolian eruptions were observed with a video camera. In order to extrapolate the mechanism of particle transport, we have analyzed the frame-by-frame images and obtained particle trajectories. Using the trajectory data, we investigated the features of Strombolian activity such as ejection velocity, explosion energy, and particle release depth. As gas flow around airborne particles can be one of the strongest controlling factors of particle transport, the gas flow velocities were estimated by comparing the simulated and observed trajectories. The range of the ejection velocity of the observed eruptions was 5.1–35.5 m/s, while the gas flow velocity, which is larger than the ejection velocity, reached a maximum of 90 m/s, with mean values of 25–52 m/s for each bursting event. The particle release depth, where pyroclasts start to move separately from the chunk of magmatic fragments, was estimated to be 11–13 m using linear extrapolation of the trajectories. Although these parabolic trajectories provide us with an illusion of particles unaffected by the gas flow, the parameter values show that the particles are transported by the gas flow, which is possibly released from inside the conduit.

As a parameter important ballistic, the research about polygonal and grooved barrels' behavior has not been widely carried out. The pressures, velocities, stresses, deformations, and strains generated by the firing of 9 mm × 19 mm ammunition in weapons with polygonal barrels are analyzed numerically and experimentally, compared with those generated in pistols with grooved barrels. The Finite Element Method with equal boundary and loading conditions was used in both types of guns, specifying the actual materials of the projectile and the barrels. Subsequently, experimental tests were carried out on various weapons with 9 mm ammunitions of 115, 122, and 124 gr. The results show that the 9 mm bullet fired in a polygonal barrel undergoes a maximum deformation towards its exterior of 0.178 mm and interior of 0.158 mm, with stress up to 295.85 MPa. Compared with 0.025 mm maximum external deformation and 0.112 mm internal deformation of 9 mm projectiles fired in a grooved barrel, with stress up to 269.79 MPa. The deformation in the polygonal barrel is in a greater area, but the rifling impression left is less deep, making its identification more difficult. Although there are differences in the stresses and strains obtained, similar velocity and pressure parameters are achieved in the two types of barrels. The sabot discard asymmetry caused by spinning affects the exterior ballistic characteristics and shooting accuracy of a gun with the rifled barrel. To gain a deeper understanding of the complex sabot discard performance for the armor-piercing, fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), a numerical investigation is performed to assess the effects of the spin rate on the sabot discard characteristics. We obtain the calculation boundary by the interior ballistics and the firing conditions and carry out a numerical simulation under different spin rates using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a dynamic mesh technique. We analyze four aspects of sabot discard characteristics, namely, sabot separation, rod surface pressure, rod aerodynamic parameters, and discarding quantization parameters. Computational results show that the sabot separation nearly presents perfect symmetry at 0 rad/s, and when the initial rate of the sabot increases, there is more obvious separation asymmetry, and it contributes to the relative position variation among the sabots and the rod. The distinction of rod surface pressure indicates that the choked flow is the strongest flow source, and the spin rate has almost no effect on the pressure of the rod front part. When the monitoring point moves towards the fins, the pressure distribution and intensity change more dramatically. The initial spin rate and separation asymmetry produce a variation in the surface pressure, which further influences the rod aerodynamic characteristics. The discarding quantization parameters exhibit a certain variation rule with its spin rate. 2,000 rad/s has a significant influence on the rod aerodynamic coefficients during the weak coupling phase. When the spin rate is in the range of 0–900 rad/s, the discarding characteristics remain the same. However, when the spin rate exceeds 900 rad/s, the separation time and aerodynamic impulse have a quadratic polynomial relationship with the rate. Current methods used in terminal ballistics to determine the volume of temporary cavities created by projectiles in soft tissue simulants (such as ballistic soap) usually involve silicone-casting to obtain the cavity moulds. However, these methods have important drawbacks including their little sensitivity and precision, besides the fact that they are destructive. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) might not only overcome those limitations but also offer useful tools for digitally reporting the scientific results. This work accomplished the 3D digital reconstruction of the cavities created by different projectiles in ballistic soap blocks. This way, the total volume of the cavities, the projectile penetration depths, and other measurements were determined, rendering better capabilities when compared to the current silicone method. All these features were achieved through the CT analysis and 3D Slicer imaging software. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the method can preserve the evidence by digitally obtaining, signing, and storing the infographic videos displaying the 3D-reconstructed cavities. Introduction: Synthetic skin simulants are used both in wound ballistics and forensic investigations and should display similar mechanical properties to human tissue and therefore need to be validated. It is recognised that skin simulants may have a significantly different performance when different backing combinations are used; therefore, it is essential to specify and control the backing material. Roebuck 1518 synthetic chamois (RBK) backed by 20% ballistic gelatin has been validated as a suitable skin simulant; this study looks at validating the RBK simulant when backed by 10% ballistic gelatin. Methods: Two layers of RBK synthetic chamois backed by calibrated 10% ballistic gelatin were placed onto the long face of the block and secured. Steel spheres with various sectional densities were fired using a custom-made gas gun to determine the V50 of the simulants and compared with the predicted V50. Results: The results demonstrate that for a sectional density between 2.1 and 6.6 g/cm2, the skin simulants backed by 10% gelatin are within the 35% error bounds predicted by James' patent equation. All samples had a close fit to the regression line (R2 = 0.9738), and a Spearman rho test indicates that there is a "strong" negative correlation between sectional density and the V50 (Rs =− 0.957, p = 0.00). Conclusions: This validation study confirms that RBK synthetic simulant backed by 10% gelatin is a suitable skin simulant when testing non-deforming projectiles with sectional densities ranging from 2.1 to 6.6 g/cm2. A predictive trend line also indicates that the skin simulant is suitable for non-deforming projectiles with sectional densities ranging from 0.6 to 20 g/cm2 although this needs to be confirmed. A "plated bullet" has a thin layer of electroplated metal covering the lead core of the projectile. In certain situations, this thin layer of electroplated metal can fracture upon discharge of the firearm. When such fracturing occurs, vaporous lead can escape through the fracture lines of the spinning projectile, resulting in a spiral‐shaped deposition of dark residue surrounding a central bullet defect. The spiral‐shaped pattern is referred to as "comet‐tailing," or the "vortex effect." In this report, three homicide cases with associated comet‐tailing are presented. Experimental and numerical studies on the effect of oblique impacts on the ballistic properties of GFRP were carried out. Ballistic tests of specimens using a steel sphere with a diameter of 6.35 mm were performed for inclination angles from the normal of 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 degrees. Ballistic curves and ballistic limits for each case were obtained, and a function approximating these results was proposed. The size of the delamination area at different angles was also analyzed. The results showed that the most catastrophic failures cases of impact were impacts with angles of 0°–30°. Computational studies of impact loading during oblique impacts were carried out in LS-DYNA using the mesoscale yarn-level model (MSM). Black powder weapons are rarely used in countries where access to firearms is easy. Poland has a fairly restrictive law regarding possession of firearms but under the Weapons and Munitions Act of May 21, 1999, as further amended, the possession of black powder weapons using separate loaded ammunition and manufactured before 1885, or replicas thereof, is legal without a permit. When the amendment was introduced, forensic pathologists anticipated a rush of cases involving such weapons, mainly suicides, but also accidents and homicides, but in our own practice in Lodz over the past 10 years (2010–2019) we have encountered only 7 such cases. Although the number is not particularly high, it does nevertheless account for nearly one‐fifth of all gunshot deaths in the area. The aim of this paper is to present a series of deaths involving the use of black powder handguns. In analyzed cases, the victims were mostly men, they were sober, and their manner of death was suicide. As far as age was concerned, no regularity was found. All black powder handgun shots were characteristic enough in comparison with those from conventional firearms that they could be identified easily—the entrance wounds were larger than usual, there was a lot of gunpowder around them and in the wound canal, the bone fractures were extensive. Analysis of the literature and of our own material indicates that easy availability is not the only factor affecting the choice of a weapon; ease of use and reliability are also important. We investigate ballistic vibrational energy transport through optical phonon band in oligomeric chains in the presence of decoherence. An exact solution is obtained for the excitation density in the space-time representation in the continuous limit and this solution is used to characterize the energy transport time and intensity. Three transport mechanisms are identified such as ballistic, diffusive, and directed diffusive regimes, occurring at different distances and time scales. The crossover between the two diffusive regimes is continuous, while the switch between the ballistic and diffusive mechanisms occurs in a discontinuous manner in accord with the recent experimental results on energy transport in perfluoroalkanes. We have investigated the temperature dependence of ballistic mobility in a 100 nm-long InGaAs/InAlAs metamorphic high-electron-mobility transistor designed for millimeter-wavelength RF applications. To extract the temperature dependence of quasi-ballistic mobility, our experiment involves measurements of the effective mobility in the low-bias linear region of the transistor and of the collision-dominated Hall mobility using a gated Hall bar of the same epitaxial structure. The data measured from the experiment are consistent with that of modeled ballistic mobility based on ballistic transport theory. These results advance the understanding of ballistic transport in various transistors with a nano-scale channel length that is comparable to the carrier's mean free path in the channel. This paper describes an experimental and a numerical study of a recently developed high-efficiency, low-resistance launching method for an underwater launcher. The so-called gas-curtain launch method overcomes the problems of poor safety and low muzzle velocity in traditional fully submerged launchers. By introducing part of the gas inside the chamber to the front of the projectile, the water inside the barrel will be driven out. A low-resistance gas passage is then provided for projectile motion in the bore, thus delivering better interior ballistics performance than that in fully submerged launchers. Experiments are carried out using a 12.7-mm underwater launcher. A pressure sensor is used to record the chamber pressure, and high-speed video recordings allow the projectile motion around the muzzle to be determined. The experimental results show that the muzzle velocity is 172.8 m/s and the maximum chamber pressure reaches 116.0 MPa in a fully submerged launch, compared with a maximum chamber pressure of only 41.8 MPa and a muzzle velocity of 177.5 m/s when the gas-curtain launch method is adopted. The significant drag reduction effect of the gas-curtain launch greatly improves the interior ballistics performance, reducing the maximum chamber pressure by about 64.1% while retaining a similar muzzle velocity. Following the experiments, a numerical model is established and simulations are performed under various ventilation mass rates. Suppression of the critical temperature in homogeneously disordered superconducting films is a consequence of the disorder-induced enhancement of Coulomb repulsion. We demonstrate that for the majority of thin films studied now this effect cannot be completely explained under the assumption of two-dimensional diffusive nature of electron motion. The main contribution to the suppression of Tc arises from the correction to the electron-electron interaction constant coming from small scales of the order of the Fermi wavelength that leads to the critical temperature shift δTc/Tc0 ∼ − 1/kFl, where kF is the Fermi momentum and l is the mean free path. Thus almost for all superconducting films that follow the fermionic scenario of Tc suppression with decreasing the film thickness, this effect is caused by the proximity to the three-dimensional Anderson localization threshold and is controlled by the parameter kFl rather than the sheet resistance of the film. Compared to computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides superior visualization of the soft tissue. Recently, the first 7 Tesla (7 T) MRI scanner was approved for clinical use, which will facilitate access to these ultra-high-field MRI scanners for noninvasive examinations and scientific studies on decedents. 7 T MRI has the potential to provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), a characteristic that can be directly exploited to improve image quality and invest in attempts to increase resolution. Therefore, evaluating the diagnostic potential of 7 T MRI for forensic purposes, such as assessments of fatal gunshot wounds, was deemed essential. In this article, we present radiologic findings obtained for craniocerebral gunshot wounds in three decedents. The decedents were submitted to MRI examinations using a 7 T MRI scanner that has been approved for clinical use and a clinical 3 T MRI scanner for comparison. We focused on detecting tiny injuries beyond the wound tract caused by temporary cavitation, such as microbleeds. Additionally, 7 T T2-weighted MRI highlighted a dark (hypo intense) zone beyond the permanent wound tract, which was attributed to increased amounts of paramagnetic blood components in damaged tissue. Microbleeds were also detected adjacent to the wound tract in the white matter on 7 T MRI. Based on the findings of radiologic assessments, the advantages and disadvantages of postmortem 7 T MRI compared to 3 T MRI are discussed with regard to investigations of craniocerebral gunshot wounds as well as the potential role of 7 T MRI in the future of forensic science. A tribological model is presented that provides a correlation between bullet velocity and friction force in firearms. The model is based on the observation that higher velocities result in lower friction and assumes that the surfaces of the bullet and barrel consist of elastic asperities. The model predicts that as the relative velocity increases, the asperities are less likely to return to their neutral positions. The model was tested using experimental muzzle velocity and gas pressure measurements for caliber 5.56 × 45 bullets and the results were in good agreement with the model predictions. The coefficient of friction obtained with the model is also in line with literature values for very low sliding velocities. The Material Point Method (MPM) has appealing attributes for simulations involving large deformation of materials with history-dependent constitutive laws. It avoids the mesh tangling errors of Lagrangian finite element methods, as well as the advection errors typical of Eulerian or ALE methods. Recent developments in the MPM have led to a better understanding of the error and dissipation that arise in the particle-to-grid and grid-to-particle mapping, but significant error and high-frequency noise can still occur in simulations involving strong shock waves. This error appears to be associated with the kinematics on the background computational grid common to all MPM implementations. An investigation of forward- and reverse-ballistic impact simulations has revealed that sub grid-scale variations in the material state arise as the shock front enters a grid cell, and that this non-equilibrium state can persist unless the background grid has some means to relax the resultant particle-scale noise. Relaxation can occur when (i) the background grid shape functions have non-constant gradient, (ii) the shocked material has a sufficiently high velocity relative to the background grid, or (iii) the velocity field is enriched with additional degrees of freedom for treating weak discontinuities between particles. In this paper, we study the interior ballistic characteristics of rockets or missiles with acceleration less than 10 g during the compressed air ejection process. First, we designed and fabricated a full-size compressed air ejection system, and utilizing different missile mass and initial pressure variables. Then, we established the mathematical model of the interior ballistics of the ejection system using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme to estimate the ejection performance and results of the system. In addition, we independently built a full-scale compressed air ejection system test platform and conducted multi-condition live ejection tests. The results show that the effective travel distance of the missile is greater than 2.5 m and the acceleration is basically less than 10 g. With a certain missile mass, the acceleration peak, velocity peak and displacement of the missile are positively correlated with the initial pressure, and the opposite variable is negatively correlated. The maximum acceleration and velocity values are 10.11 g and 13.5 m/s, respectively, and the minimum values are about 3.5 g and 4 m/s. The variables are the same, the pressure peak at each measuring point in the ejection barrel is bottom > middle > upper, and the amplitude of the pressure drop between middle and bottom gradually decreases. Depending on the appearance time of the pressure point, the maximum pressure attenuation time in the ejection barrel is determined to be 0.838 s, and the minimum is 0.343 s. Comparing the pressure peak points at the bottom, middle and upper with the calculated pressure curve, the attenuation trend of the two is basically the same. Therefore, the research results show that the full-scale compressed air ejection system is effective and practical, and the test results provide data reference for related launches. Gunshots to the human body can cause direct and indirect injuries. Direct injuries are a consequence of the projectile guiding its way through the body, creating a permanent wound channel and thereby damaging the penetrated as well as the adjacent tissue. In addition, the temporary wound cavity is responsible for indirect injuries occurring distant to the actual wound tract. This can potentially affect different types of tissue, like blood vessels, organs, or bones, that are not directly passed through by the projectile. For this case report, we describe a suicidal headshot to the temporal area where the extension of the temporary wound cavity and its subsequent collapse led to massive energy transfer to the surrounding tissue leading to breakage of the upper dental prosthesis and fractures of the lower jaw. A chronological synopsis of the history of the technology used in experimental and testing work relating to artillery pieces is presented. The period covered is from the mid-seventeenth century up to the Cold War era of the mid-twentieth century. Although the focus is on the development of ballistics measurement in Britain, there are important links to related work in continental Europe. The locus for much of what is described is the Royal Artillery proof and experimental range at Shoeburyness and the key individuals and groups of men and women who worked there. There are longitudinal connections between the very earliest technologies of mechanical chronometry, with paper screens and paper-based calculations, and the later technology where timings, screens and calculations had all become electronic. The continuously growing number of micro and nanosatellites launched in recent years has stimulated research institutes and industries to find alternative and less expensive ways to reach Low Earth Orbits. Laser ablation propulsion is one of the most promising launching techniques, even though a dedicated and reliable testing system has not been discussed in literature. We present a simple and dependable apparatus for measurements of laser ablation generated impulse and ejected mass. Impulse measurements are performed by using a ballistic pendulum, specifically designed for µ N s impulses, whose oscillations are accurately detected by means of a reflected probe laser with a long optical path, which leads to a measurement accuracy of around 1%. The apparatus provides fast and reliable measurements that take into account the variability in centre of mass and moment of inertia that occur by changing the target material on the pendulum. Ablated mass measurements exploit the programmable displacements of a dedicated target irradiated with a large number of laser shots to increase the resolution of the measurement. The apparatus is tested with a KrF excimer laser at 248 nm and pulse width of 20 ns onto an aluminum target: a highly reproducible series of measurements of momentum coupling coefficient () with a standard deviation of around 1% is presented, along with a specific impulse () in favourable accordance with the literature. The ballistic capabilities of composite metal foam (CMF) armors were experimentally tested against a 14.5 × 114 mm B32 armor-piercing incendiary (API) and compared to various sizes of armor-piercing (AP) ballistic threats, ranging from a 7.62 to 12.7 mm. Three different arrangements of layered hard armors were designed and manufactured using ceramic faceplates (in one layer, two layers or multiple tiles), a combination of ceramic and steel face sheets, with a single-layered CMF core, and a thin aluminum backing. The performance of various CMF armor designs against the 14.5 mm rounds are compared to each other and to the performance of the rolled homogeneous armor standard to identify the most efficient design for further investigations. The percentage of kinetic energy absorbed by the CMF layer in various armor arrangements and in tests against various threat sizes was calculated and compared. It appears that the larger the threat size, the more efficient the CMF layer will be due to a greater number of hollow metal spheres that are engaged in absorbing the impact energy. Featured Application: The ballistic modular system was developed to serve as a mobile protective barrier against projectile impact and also to mitigate the effect of secondary fragments and explosions. The advantage of the system lies in its very fast assembly at the point of intervention, where no heavy machinery is needed. The whole system can be assembled just by manual manipulation into various shapes. The system is based on reasonable mobility and versatility of the whole solution, which is achieved by combining basic elements according to the needs of the situation. The static response of ballistic panels and also its resistance to blast and ballistic impact is investigated in the framework of this study. By connecting individual ballistic panels together, the protective barrier can be constructed. The protective barrier can be featured as a system with high mobility and versatility that is achieved by linking basic interlocking plate elements together. The resulting protective barrier can be shaped according to many possible scenarios in a wall with various possible opening angles and a small post with the tetragonal base or a larger post with the hexagonal ground plan. The material solution of the protective barrier benefits from the application of ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composites (UHPFRCC), which meets the requirements for enhanced resistance against extreme loads such as blast or impact. Besides, by using UHPFRCC, thin and slender design can be adopted, which is advantageous in many ways. Slender design results in a lower weight, allowing for easy manipulation and replacement. To verify the behavior of the panels, the proposed barrier was subjected to various loadings at different strain rates. The experimental campaign demonstrated that the protective barrier has a reasonable load-bearing capacity and also sufficient resistance against projectile impact and blast effects. In this study, a new method based on regularised orthogonal matching pursuit (ROMP) decomposition is proposed to extract the feature of the ballistic target's rotating micro-motion. Based on the establishment of the ballistic target rotation model, the general model of target's narrowband radar echo is obtained. An over-complete dictionary of atoms is established by combining the intrinsic characteristics of the signal model, and the selection of the matched atoms is carried out according to the regularisation principle. The extraction of the target's rotating micro-motion feature and the reconstruction of the original signal are realised. Simulation results show that the method can extract the micro-motion feature efficiently and accurately.
