Abstract

Radiative decays \phi\to\eta\pi^0\gamma and \phi\to\pi^0\pi^0\gamma are studied assuming that these decays are caused through the intermediate a_0(980)\gamma and f_0(980)\gamma states, respectively. Fitting the experimental data of the \eta\pi^0 and \pi^0\pi^0 invariant mass spectrum in the decays \phi\to\eta\pi^0\gamma and \pi^0\pi^0\gamma, it is shown that the processes \phi\to a_0\gamma and \phi\to f_0\gamma are dominated by the K^+K^- loop interaction rather than the contact \phi a_0(f_0)\gamma one both for the non-derivative and derivative SPP coupling. The experimental data of \Gamma[\phi\to f_0\gamma]/\Gamma[\phi\to a_0\gamma] predicts that g_{f_0K\bar{K}}/g_{a_0K\bar{K}} \sim 2. Considering the effects of the mixing between low mass scalar qq\bar{q}\bar{q} states and high mass scalar q\bar{q} states to these coupling constants g_{f_0K\bar{K}} and g_{a_0K\bar{K}}, one suggests that the mixing is rather large., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

87. A retrospective analysis of the clinical effects of neoadjuvant combination therapy with full-dose gemcitabine and radiation therapy in patients with biliary tract cancer.

Abstract

Purpose This study aims to evaluate survival and the objective response to neoadjuvant combination therapy with gemcitabine and radiation therapy in patients with biliary tract cancer. Methods The chemoradiation therapy regimen consisted of 3 cycles of full-dose gemcitabine (1000 mg/m 2 at days 1, 8, and 15, every 4 weeks) with 50–60 Gy radiation. We compared 27 patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy and 79 patients who were treated without neoadjuvant therapy. Hemi-hepatectomy or pancreatoduodenectomy was planned for all of the patients in the study population. CT-based staging was used to adjust for the pre-treatment characteristics of the patients. Results After confirming the reproducibility of CT-based staging, we analyzed the survival of the patients. The multivariate analysis showed that the absence of arterial invasion on CT, the absence of lymph node swelling, and neoadjuvant therapy were independent prognostic factors. The three-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates in patients treated with and without neoadjuvant therapy were 78% and 58%, respectively ( P = 0.0263). The adjusted overall survival (OS) (determined by the inverse probability of treatment weighting method using the inverse propensity score) was improved by neoadjuvant therapy ( P = 0.00187); the hazard ratio was 0.3505. Abstract

We analyze the experimental data for $\phi\to f_0(980)\gamma$, $\phi\to a_0(980)\gamma$, $f_0(980)\to\gamma\gamma$ and $a_0(980)\to\gamma\gamma$ decay widths in a framework where $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ are assumed to be mainly $qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$ low mass scalar mesons and mixed with $q\bar{q}$ high mass scalar mesons. Applied the vector meson dominance model (VDM), these decays amplitudes are expressed by coupling parameters $B$ describing the S ($qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$ scalar meson)-V(vector meson)- V(vector meson) coupling and $B'$ describing the S' ($q\bar{q}$ scalar meson)-V-V coupling. Adopting the magnitudes for $B$ and $B'$ as $2.8{GeV^{-1}}$ and $12{GeV^{-1}}$, respectively, the mixing angle between $a_0(980)$ and $a_0(1450)$ as 9 degrees, and the mixing parameter $\lambda_{01}$ causing the mixing between I=0 $qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$ state and $q\bar{q}$ state as $0.24{GeV}^2$, we can interpret these experimental data, consistently., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

96. A magnetic resonance imaging-based classification system for indication of trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy in canine pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism.

Abstract

Objectives The objectives of this study were to establish a magnetic resonance imaging-based classification system for canine hyperadrenocorticism according to pituitary gland extension, determine indications for trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy, and clarify the prognosis for each disease grade. Methods A 5-point classification system (Grades 1 to 5) was developed based on tumour extension in dorsal and cranio-caudal directions. Cases were then classified as Type A: no arterial circle of Willis or cavernous sinus involvement and Type B: cases in which these blood vessels were involved. Results Medical records and magnetic resonance imaging data of 37 cases with hyperadrenocorticism were reviewed. Thirty-three cases underwent surgery; 4 Grade 5 cases did not have appropriate indications for surgery, and other therapies were used. Complete resection was achieved for 3, 3, 22 and 1 Grade 1A, 2A, 3A and 3B cases, respectively. Resection was incomplete in 1, 1 and 2 Grade 3A, 3B and 4B cases, respectively. Remission was achieved in 29 cases. Recurrence occurred in 4 cases, all of which were classified as Grade 3. Clinical Significance Dogs with Type A, Grade 1 to 3 hyperadrenocorticism had a good prognosis following trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy. Grade 3B, 4 and 5 cases may not be suitable for this surgery. Abstract

Salivary glands are essential for the maintenance of oral health by providing lubrication and antimicrobial protection to the mucosal and tooth surfaces. Saliva is modified and delivered to the oral cavity by a complex multifunctional ductal system. During development, these ducts form as solid tubes, which undergo cavitation to create lumens. Apoptosis has been suggested to play a role in this cavitation process along with changes in cell polarity. Here, we show that apoptosis occurs from the very earliest stages of mouse salivary gland development, much earlier than previously reported. Apoptotic cells were observed in the center of the first epithelial stalk at early-stage embryonic day 12.5 (E12.5) according to both TUNEL staining and cleaved caspase 3 immunofluorescence. The presumptive lumen space was highlighted by the colocalization of a predictive lumen marker, cytokeratin 7. At E14.5, as lumens start to form throughout the glands, apoptotic expression decreased while cytokeratin 7 remained positive. In vitro inhibition of all caspases in E12.5 and E13.5 salivary glands resulted in wider ducts, as compared with the controls, and a defect in lumen formation. In contrast, no such defect in lumen formation was observed at E14.5. Our data indicate that apoptosis is involved during early stages of gland formation (E12.5 onward) and appears important for shaping the forming ducts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

98. Measurement of energy muons in EAS at energy region larger thean 10(17) eV

Abstract

A measurement of low energy muons in extensive air showers (EAS) (threshold energies are 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.38 GeV) was carried out. The density under the concrete shielding equivalent to 0.25 GeV at core distance less than 500 m and 0.5 GeV less than 150 m suffers contamination of electromagnetic components. Therefore the thickness of concrete shielding for muon detectors for the giant air shower array is determined to be 0.5 GeV equivalence. Effects of photoproduced muons are found to be negligible in the examined ranges of shower sizes and core distances. The fluctuation of the muon density in 90 sq m is at most 25% between 200 m and 600 m from the core around 10 to the 17th power eV.

100. Centrifuge-based dynamic microarray system toward an array of a few amount of sample.

Abstract

In this study, we purpose a centrifuge-based dynamic microarray system (CDM) for trapping micro-sized samples sequentially from only 10 μl of the samples. Our system enables us to make an array of microbeads only with a spin-coater. The air can be introduced to the microchannel to isolate and encapsulate the trapped beads by the specific speed rotation because the microbeads were fixed at the outlet of the trapping spots by the centrifugal force. We optimized rotation speed for trapping with the high trapping yield and successfully controlled sample/solution/air introduction. This device can also release the trapped beads by flowing liquid backward, which allows us to retrieve the microbeads and reuse the device. The presented technology marks an essential step towards a high efficient portable CDM for point-of-care use. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
