Although the neural basis of balance control remains unknown, recent studies suggest that a feedback law on center-of-mass (CoM) kinematics determines the temporal patterning of muscle activity during human postural responses. We hypothesized that the same feedback law would also explain variations in muscle activity to support-surface translation as perturbation characteristics vary. Subject CoM motion was experimentally modulated using 34 different anterior–posterior support-surface translations of varying peak acceleration and velocity but the same total displacement. Electromyographic (EMG) recordings from several muscles of the lower limbs and trunk were compared to predicted EMG patterns from an inverted pendulum model under delayed feedback control. In both recorded and predicted EMG patterns, the initial burst of muscle activity scaled linearly with peak acceleration, whereas the tonic "plateau" region scaled with peak velocity. The relatively invariant duration of the initial burst was modeled by incorporating a transient, time-limited encoding of CoM acceleration inspired by muscle spindle primary afferent dynamic responses. The entire time course of recorded and predicted muscle activity compared favorably across all conditions, suggesting that the initial burst of muscle activity is not generated by feedforward neural mechanisms. Perturbation conditions were presented randomly and subjects maintained relatively constant feedback gains across all conditions. In contrast, an optimal feedback solution based on a trade-off between CoM stabilization and energy expenditure predicted that feedback gains should change with perturbation characteristics. Although feedback models have been used to simulate body motions in human postural control, it is not known whether muscle activation patterns generated by the nervous system during postural responses can also be explained by a feedback control process. We investigated whether a simple feedback law could explain temporal patterns of muscle activation in response to support-surface translations in human subjects. Previously, we used a single-link inverted-pendulum model with a delayed feedback controller to reproduce temporal patterns of muscle activity during postural responses in cats. We scaled this model to human dimensions and determined whether it could reproduce human muscle activity during forward and backward support-surface perturbations. Through optimization, we found three feedback gains (on pendulum acceleration, velocity, and displacement) and a common time delay that allowed the model to best match measured electromyographic (EMG) signals. For each muscle and each subject, the entire time courses of EMG signals during postural responses were well reconstructed in muscles throughout the lower body and resembled the solution derived from an optimal control model. In ankle muscles, >75% of the EMG variability was accounted for by model reconstructions. Surprisingly, >67% of the EMG variability was also accounted for in knee, hip, and pelvis muscles, even though motion at these joints was minimal. Although not explicitly required by our optimization, pendulum kinematics were well matched to subject center-of-mass (CoM) kinematics. Together, these results suggest that a common set of feedback signals related to task-level control of CoM motion is used in the temporal formation of muscle activity during postural control. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Bevacizumab has been shown to be an effective treatment of macular oedema. This study assesses the response of macular oedema to bevacizumab with specific focus on the first 24 h postinjection. METHODS: Subjects with diabetic macular oedema (DMO) or exudative age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) received intravitreal bevacizumab injections. Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) visual acuity and OCT macular thickness measurements were obtained at baseline, 1, 3, 6, 24 and 48 h, 1 week and 1 month postinjection. RESULTS: The average baseline OCT was 452.91 µm (SD 182.96, range 249.00 to 784.00). After injection, there was a statistically significant decrease in OCT thickness within 2 h with a plateau phase out to 24 h, followed by a significant drop between 24 and 48 h, and a return towards baseline between 1 week and 1 month. Average changes in ETDRS visual acuity were not statistically significant, though many patients experienced a positive outcome. CONCLUSION: While there is an immediate pressure-related effect, it appears that the anti-VEGF effects of bevacizumab require approximately 24 h to become active and persist for 2–3 weeks. These results suggest that injections at 2–3-week intervals might provide improved clinical outcomes, compared with the currently typical 4–6-week interval of injections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heterogeneities among tumor cells significantly contribute towards cancer progression and therapeutic inefficiency. Hence, understanding the nature of cancer through liquid biopsies and isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) has gained considerable interest over the years. Microfluidics has emerged as one of the most popular platforms for performing liquid biopsy applications. Various label-free and labeling techniques using microfluidic platforms have been developed, the majority of which focus on CTC isolation from normal blood cells. However, sorting and profiling of various cell phenotypes present amongst those CTCs is equally important for prognostics and development of personalized therapies. In this review, firstly, we discuss the biophysical and biochemical heterogeneities associated with tumor cells and CTCs which contribute to cancer progression. Moreover, we discuss the recently developed microfluidic platforms for sorting and profiling of tumor cells and CTCs. These techniques are broadly classified into biophysical and biochemical phenotyping methods. Biophysical methods are further classified into mechanical and electrical phenotyping. While biochemical techniques have been categorized into surface antigen expressions, metabolism, and chemotaxis-based phenotyping methods. We also shed light on clinical studies performed with these platforms over the years and conclude with an outlook for the future development in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to examine the relationship between managerial ability and innovation efficiency, the mediating effect of digital transformation and the moderating effect of internal control. Design/methodology/approach: This study collected A-share manufacturing listed companies in China from 2008 to 2019 and analyzed the data by means of multiple regression analysis, mediating effect test, moderating effect test and heterogeneity test. Finally, the authors conducted robustness test by remeasuring key variables and adding control variables. Findings: The empirical results show that the higher managerial ability can improve innovation efficiency, internal control has a positive moderating effect and digital transformation plays a partial mediating effect on the relationship between managerial ability and innovation efficiency. Specially, it is found that the mediating effect of digital transformation is not significant in non-state-owned firms. Practical implications: This study suggests that it is necessary to focus on the managerial ability in terms of both cultivation and supervision, to further deepen the digital transformation from the aspects of firms, government and society, especially to support the digital transformation of non-state-owned firms, and to make efforts to improve the corporate governance mechanism and internal control system, so as to better comprehensively realize the improvement of enterprise innovation efficiency. Purpose: This study proposes the novel construct of digital transformation anxiety and investigates its effect, which is mediated by absorptive capacity and dynamic capability, on digital innovation performance. Design/methodology/approach: This study conducted a questionnaire survey among Taiwanese manufacturing and service companies to verify the research framework. A total of 130 valid responses were collected and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and bootstrapping to test direct and mediation effects, respectively. Findings: Digital transformation anxiety negatively affects absorptive capacity and dynamic capability, whereas absorptive capacity and dynamic capability positively affect digital innovation performance. Dynamic capability more strongly mediates the association between digital transformation anxiety and digital innovation performance than absorptive capacity. Additionally, digital transformation anxiety does not negatively affect digital innovation performance. Finally, manufacturing companies had significantly higher levels of digital transformation anxiety than service companies. Research limitations/implications: This study proposes the novel construct of digital transformation anxiety to address a gap in the literature. Digital transformation anxiety leads companies to adopt unnecessarily conservative practices, preventing them from flexibly responding to technological advances. This insight highlights the negative effect of such anxiety on absorptive capacity and dynamic capability, extending the application of path dependency theory to companies. The findings underscore the value of enhancing dynamic capability and reallocating resources to foster digital innovation. The study identified and explored the concept of digital transformation anxiety and extended the perspective of dynamic capability to include digital transformation and digital innovation. Practical implications: The current findings indicate that digital transformation anxiety does not substantially affect digital innovation performance in Taiwanese companies. Consequently, Taiwanese companies should focus on developing their absorptive capacity and dynamic capability to enhance digital innovation. Purpose: Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) increasingly implement digitalization in uncertain business environments. However, a dearth exists in the entrepreneurship literature for understanding the decision-making logic of digitalization as a management issue. Drawing on the effectuation theory, this study aims to explore the relationships between effectuation dimensions and SMEs' digitalization. Design/methodology/approach: Using quantitative data collected from 345 Chinese SMEs through questionnaires, the authors conducted the principal component analysis and hierarchical linear regression analysis. Findings: The results highlight significant positive relationships between the four effectuation elements – experimentation, affordable loss, flexibility and precommitment – and SMEs' digitalization. Moreover, this research considers the environmental conditions as moderators and reveals that environmental dynamism and complexity associated with high uncertainty negatively moderate the effects of effectuation on SMEs' digitalization. Practical implications: SMEs embarking on digitalization should constantly experiment to determine optimal strategies while contemplating their affordable losses. Flexibility should also be maintained to discard unproductive tactics and redirect to other viable options. Additionally, precommitments can reduce the risk that SMEs encounter in digitalization process. While the effectuation principles consolidate the likelihood of a successful digitalization, this research recommends that entrepreneurs should carefully consider their possible application in uncertain environments. Originality/value: This study contributes to the entrepreneurship literature by theoretically clarifying the decision-making mechanism of digitalization and extends the application of effectuation to this context by illuminating the influences of effectuation principles on SMEs' digital transformation. Purpose: Although the interest in firm media sentiment has been increasing, the impact of news media sentiments on consumers' perception of firms' offerings and, subsequently, their sales remain unknown. This study aims to address this research question in this study. Furthermore, the authors consider the role of two boundary conditions, i.e., offerings' similarity and offerings' service ratio, that moderate the main relationship. Design/methodology/approach: Using a comprehensive and novel data set of over 900 firms between 2009 and 2019 from multiple sources, this study addresses the research questions. The authors use a fixed effects panel regression model to estimate the model. Findings: A firm's news media sentiments can influence consumers' perception of the corporate brand, thereby driving sales growth. This study finds that when a firm's offerings are not differentiated from its competitors, news media sentiments become more important and so does when a firm offers more services than a product. Research limitations/implications: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to assess customers' responses as manifested in the sales growth of a firm's offerings, using both primary and secondary data and analysis. Practical implications: The findings provide actionable insights to managers by identifying specific offerings-related attributes – similarity and service ratio – where media sentiments play a critical role in influencing sales growth. Originality/value: While existing studies in marketing have primarily considered user-generated social media sentiments, this study departs from this literature by investigating earned media sentiments through traditional media outlets such as newspapers and business magazines, which have rarely been studied in marketing. Background/Objectives: Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) is an important clinical biomarker for ocular conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and digital eye strain. Additionally, its measurements can be essential in health assessment for visual function, systemic diseases, and brain health. We aimed to assess the repeatability, agreement, and effects of the learning curve of the new portable handheld heterochromatic flicker photometer, Zx Pro, in measuring MPOD in a wide age range of ocular-healthy adults, compared to the MPOD measurements obtained using the clinically available QuantifEye device. Methods: Seventy-six participants performed one practice attempt and two study-related MPOD measurements with the Zx Pro and the QuantifEye. Results: The Pearson correlation between the study-related MPOD measurements for Zx Pro and QuantifEye devices was 90% and 85%, respectively. Bland and Altman plots show excellent agreement between the device's MPOD data, with 95% limits of an agreement being −0.10 to +0.11 du. The mean difference between the practice attempt and the study-related measurements was not statistically significant for Zx Pro but was significant for QuantifEye (Repeated measures ANOVA p = 0.325 and p = 0.015, respectively). Conclusions: The Zx Pro provides excellent repeatable MPOD measurements, has an insignificant learning curve, and is in good agreement with the predicate device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The North Pacific Transition Zone (NPTZ) is known as a global marine hotspot for many endangered and commercially significant highly mobile marine species. In the last few decades, the region has undergone unprecedented physical and biological transformations in response to climate variability and change. Although it is anticipated that many highly mobile species will need to adapt and shift their distributions, current predictions have relied on short-term data sets or modeled simulations. This has left a critical gap in our understanding of long-term (decadal or longer) change and species' responses within the NPTZ. Here, we integrate nearly 3 decades of satellite tracking data from a climate sentinel, the juvenile North Pacific loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), with concurrent observations of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentrations to examine higher trophic level response to climate-induced changes within the eastern bounds of the NPTZ. Between 1997–2024, the NPTZ has warmed by 1.6°C and experienced an approximately 19% decline in mean surface chlorophyll-a concentration, a proxy for reduced productivity, resulting in a 28% (1.65 million km2) increase in total oligotrophic habitat in the eastern NPTZ. Over the same period, the average latitude of loggerhead sea turtle foraging habitat in the NPTZ has shifted northwards by 450–600 km. This represents a distributional shift rate of 116–200km/decade. In most years both the southern and northern range limits for the loggerhead turtle have shifted northward in tandem, indicating a habitat range shift rather than a range expansion. Our findings reveal significant physical and biological change to the NPTZ over the last quarter century and the first empirical evidence illustrating the substantial spatial response of a highly mobile megafaunal species. As the NPTZ continues to become more oligotrophic, these insights can provide vital information for dynamic conservation and management strategies within this critically important ecosystem. Vocal imitation in English-speaking autistic individuals has been shown to be atypical. Speaking a tone language such as Mandarin facilitates vocal imitation skills among non-autistic individuals, yet no studies have examined whether this effect holds for autistic individuals. To address this question, we compared vocal imitation of speech and song between 33 autistic Mandarin speakers and 30 age-matched non-autistic peers. Participants were recorded while imitating 40 speech and song stimuli with varying pitch and duration patterns. Acoustic analyses showed that autistic participants imitated relative pitch (but not absolute pitch) less accurately than non-autistic participants for speech, whereas for song the two groups performed comparably on both absolute and relative pitch matching. Regarding duration matching, autistic participants imitated relative duration (inter-onset interval between consecutive notes/syllables) less accurately than non-autistic individuals for both speech and song, while their lower performance on absolute duration matching of the notes/syllables was presented only in the song condition. These findings indicate that experience with tone languages does not mitigate the challenges autistic individuals face in imitating speech and song, highlighting the importance of considering the domains and features of investigation and individual differences in cognitive abilities and language backgrounds when examining imitation in autism. Atypical vocal imitation has been identified in English-speaking autistic individuals, whereas the characteristics of vocal imitation in tone-language-speaking autistic individuals remain unexplored. By comparing speech and song imitation, the present study reveals a unique pattern of atypical vocal imitation across speech and music domains among Mandarin-speaking autistic individuals. The findings suggest that tone language experience does not compensate for difficulties in vocal imitation in autistic individuals and extends our understanding of vocal imitation in autism across different languages. Arterial stiffening is a hallmark of chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related cardiovascular events and is primarily attributed to the elevated matrix stiffness. Stiffened arteries are accompanied by low-grade inflammation, but the causal effects of matrix stiffness on inflammation remain unknown. For analysis of the relationship between arterial stiffness and vascular inflammation, pulse-wave velocity (PWV) and aortic inflammatory markers were analyzed in an adenine-induced mouse model of CKD in chronological order. Compared with their control littermates, mice with CKD showed elevated arterial stiffness at the early stage of disease progression, which preceded the onset of vascular inflammation. Correspondingly, the increase of matrix stiffness induced vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) to transdifferentiate into an inflammatory phenotype, as indicated by the increased expression and secretion of MCP-1, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-18. RNA-sequencing analysis of stiff matrix-cultured VSMCs and bioinformatics analysis with the ChIP-Atlas database revealed the potential involvement of the transcription factor Runx2. The expression and the nuclear localization of Runx2 were significantly increased in stiff matrix-cultured VSMCs. High-throughput ChIP-sequencing and promoter luciferase assays further revealed that NLRP3 was directly transcriptionally regulated by Runx2. The inhibition of Runx2 or NLRP3 inflammasome abrogated the proinflammatory effect of matrix stiffening on VSMCs. Together, these data revealed that arterial stiffness precedes vascular inflammatory responses in CKD mice and that the Runx2-NLRP3 axis orchestrates matrix stiffness and the VSMC inflammatory phenotype, which may contribute to the pathogenic role in arterial stiffness-related vascular inflammation and CKD-related cardiovascular complications. Antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are an increasing threat to human health. Strategies to restore antibiotic efficacy include targeting multidrug efflux pumps by competitive efflux pump inhibitors. These could be derived from natural substrates of these efflux systems. In this work, we aimed to elucidate the natural substrates of the clinically relevant Mex efflux pumps of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by an untargeted metabolomic approach. We constructed a PA14 mutant, genetically deleted in the major multidrug efflux pumps MexAB-OprM, MexCD-OprJ, MexXY-OprM, and MexEF-OprN and expressed in this mutant each efflux pump individually from an inducible promoter. Comparative analysis of the exo-metabolomes identified 210 features that were more abundant in the supernatant of efflux pump overexpressors compared to the pump-deficient mutant. Most of the identified features were efflux pump specific, while only a few were shared among several Mex pumps. We identified by-products of secondary metabolites as well as signaling molecules. Supernatants of the pump-deficient mutant also showed decreased accumulation of fatty acids, including long chain homoserine lactone quorum sensing molecules. Our data suggests that Mex efflux pumps of P. aeruginosa appear to have dedicated roles in extruding signaling molecules, metabolic by-products, as well as oxidized fatty acids. The unavoidable high-density dislocations in GaN usually hinder the normal operation of GaN-based devices. The current theoretical research studies mainly focus on threading dislocations in the bulk GaN crystal. Here, we alternatively turn our attention to the basal dislocations, which have been directly observed in experiments but have been less studied. The results from the density-functional theory and empirical molecular dynamic calculations indicate that the Al-polar GaN/AlN interface is more conductive to the formation of Shockley partial dislocations, which are the main dislocations formed during the early growth of GaN on AlN and the precursor of the threading edge dislocations. The dislocation density and local geometry in GaN deposited on AlN strongly depend on the temperature. Overall, choosing N-polar AlN as a substrate for GaN growth at 1900 K helps to obtain high-quality GaN with a greater wurtzite structure content and fewer dislocations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vulnerable livelihood groups, such as the Fulanis in Guinea-Bissau, are affected by the consequences of inequality, as they lack access to healthy food, a healthy environment and adequate primary health care. Coordination between sectors can be key to building resilient food and health systems by integrating and scaling up preventive and emergency nutrition services, especially in the context of malnutrition. In 2021, a cashew-based food product was launched in Portugal in partnership with an NGO and a Portuguese food retailer. This study aims to explore the development and marketing of the product with humanitarian objectives, assessing its impact on the different stakeholders of the project. A mixed methodology was applied, combining the evaluation of consumer behavior, assessed through self-reported electronic questionnaires and in-depth interviews with the actors involved in the project. According to the retailer group stakeholders, a great opportunity for the future lies in developing new products with a humanitarian character. The results show that consumers are indeed interested in buying a product associated with a humanitarian cause, and that the product "100% Cashew Nut Butter" has a favorable consumer acceptance in terms of sensory attributes. The long-term nature of the project and the financial return were cited as strengths by all NGO stakeholders involved, but all stakeholders agreed that innovation was needed to sustain donations. Thus, this may be a cyclical process: businesses can create demand through product development, while management and consumers, in turn, drive demand. Purpose: This study aims to explore whether top management team (TMT) faultlines affect corporate digitalization and what the impact mechanism is, thus effectively promoting the digital transformation of enterprises from the perspective of optimizing TMT structure. Design/methodology/approach: This study sampled companies that were listed in China between 2011 and 2020. Using the two-way fixed effect model, it empirically tests the impact of TMT faultlines on the digital transformation of enterprises. Findings: TMT task-related faultline significantly positively impacts enterprise digital transformation, while the bio-demographic faultline has a significant negative effect. The regulatory role played by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) power intensity in the relationship between the bio-demographic faultline and digital transformation is a negative one. The above relationship is strongly influenced by industry technical sophistication, corporate location and listing board. Research limitations/implications: The research has promoted the development of the upper echelons theory in the context of digitalization. Moreover, it enlightens the research of digital transformation's influencing factors and mechanisms. However, no suitable mediating variable was found. Practical implications: This research has significant implications for managers to optimize the internal structure of the TMT according to different enterprises' business strategies in order to establish an efficient management team. We consider how the ongoing recovery of baleen whale populations requires improved understanding when managing the largest commercial fishery in the Southern Ocean, the fishery for Antarctic krill. Baleen whales already represent one of the major consumers of krill, and as such compete with the fishery. However, they are not explicitly included either in the monitoring programme or the krill fisheries management approach of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). Individual baleen whales are at direct mortality risk from ship strike, entanglement, or by-catch. In addition, sub-lethal impacts on individuals, albeit with population-level consequences, via decreased body condition and reproductive rates, may arise from local depletion of prey and prey-field disturbance that increases whale energetic costs. Mitigating these risks requires that baleen whales, including those species not yet recovered, are fully integrated into management procedures. A vital issue will be to facilitate the ongoing recovery of blue, fin and sei whales, populations of which are still heavily depleted relative to their pre-whaling abundance. Part of the answer to this will be how CCAMLR resolves outstanding issues related to its newly emerging revised krill fishery management framework. Management of the krill fishery is data-poor, with much of the scientific support reliant upon data that are now decades old. The decision rules for determining sustainable yields need careful re-evaluation, given they were negotiated at a time when baleen whales were rarely observed, and krill fishery catches were low in relation to the estimated available krill biomass. The Antarctic marine ecosystem is spatially and temporally dynamic, and is changing, yet CCAMLR still assumes a static system. An explicit commitment to collect up-to-date monitoring data about krill and baleen whales is vital to help inform the revised management framework. Precaution argues that catch levels should not increase until adequate data are available for effective management. Purpose: This study investigates the differences in digitalization tendency levels among young adults (18–30) regarding their living environment, gender, and education. Design/methodology/approach: Digital transformation (DT) refers to digital technologies becoming more prevalent in society. This process transforms lifestyles and business models using information and communication technologies. While digital transformation is on everyone's agenda worldwide, it is still in its infancy. The data collected from 1,067 young adults show that all three control variables, living environment (CV1), gender (CV2), and education level (CV3), have a significant impact on digitalization tendency. Samples are selected using stratified sampling. Frequency distributions of quantitative data, descriptive statistics, ANOVA analysis, independent sample t-tests, reliability and validity analysis are interpreted in SPSS. Findings: It is concluded from the study that the young adults living in Istanbul are more inclined to use digital technologies and to see the process from the standpoint of its positive results. It is observed that women have a higher digitalization tendency than men. Finally, the tendency to use digital technologies increases with education level, as does the likelihood of perceiving the outputs of these technologies as positive. Research limitations/implications: The study limited the sample to young adults aged 18–30. Interest in technological solutions for combating online misinformation has rapidly grown over the last decade, yet the majority of proposed tools do not consider behavioral theories in their design, nor have they addressed the ways in which individuals could potentially interact with these tools, while omitting the plausible ways in which variations in the design of the interventions may affect end-users' decision-making and behavioral responses. In this paper, we explore the potential of nudging to inform the design of technological tools that aim to mitigate online misinformation through behavior change. We report on a design workshop where 29 participants were asked to conceive technology-mediated nudges supporting individuals' decision-making in the production, dissemination or consumption of misinformative content. In producing novel solutions, participants used the "Nudge Deck," a design support tool that makes nudge theory, and particularly a framework of 23 interaction design mechanisms for nudging, accessible during time-constrained design meetings. Purpose: Investor sentiment (optimism or pessimism) may influence investors to follow others (herding) while taking their investment decisions. Herding may result in bubbles and crashes in the financial markets. The purpose of the study is to examine the presence of herding and the effects of investor sentiment on herding in China and Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach: The investor sentiment is captured by five variables (trading volume, advance/decline ratio, weighted price-to-earnings ratio, relative strength index and interest rates) and a sentiment index developed through principal component analysis (PCA). The study uses daily prices of 2,184 firms from China and 568 firms from Pakistan for the period 2005 to 2018. Findings: The study finds that herding prevails in China while reverse herding prevails in Pakistan. Interestingly, as investors become optimistic, herding in China and reverse herding in Pakistan decrease. This indicates that herding and reverse herding are greater during pessimistic periods. Further, the increase in herding in one market reduces herding in the other market. Moreover, optimistic sentiment in the Chinese market increases herding in the Pakistani market but the reverse is not true. Practical implications: Considering the greater global financial liberalization, and better opportunities for emotion sharing, this study has important implications for regulators and investors. Market participants need to understand the prevalent irrational behavior before trading in the markets. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the 10-minute submaximal treadmill test (T10 test), a self-paced test, in determining critical speed (CS) and predicting running performance. Specifically, we sought to identify the percentage of T10 velocity (vT10) that runners performed in official distance races, and to compare physiological and performance indicators between sexes. 60 recreational runners (n=34 males and n=26 females) underwent a maximum incremental test, the novel T10 test, and ran 1200-m and 2400-m on the track. Runners self-reported their best performance times. Generalized Linear Model was used to compare running performances between sexes. For both males and females, the %vT10 in 5 km, 10 km, and half-marathon races occurred at 107.5% and 106.5%, 99.9% and 100.8%, and 92.6% and 97.1%, respectively. There was no interaction effect (p=0.520) and no main effect of sex (p=0.443). There was a main effect of distance (p<0.001), indicating that %vT10 in the 5km race differed from that found in the 10 km race (p=0.012), as well as in the half-marathon (p<0.001). There is an urgent need to develop innovative electrochemical energy storage devices that can offer high energy density, long lifespan, excellent rate capability, and improved security. For the electrochemical system, the electrode interphase, namely the cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) play crucial roles in the operating mechanism, kinetics, and overall performance of the battery. However, the in-depth investigation of the unstable and complex electrode interphase is limited by the unavoidable air and moisture contact during the material transfer process and probable high-energy radiation damage in the characterization procedure. Recently, cryogenic techniques and in situ techniques have been developed and applied in the electrode interphase research to settle the radiation damage and air erosion, respectively. However, there has not been a special review that summarizes the relevant methods, so a systematic review is very important to accelerate the development. In this review, we summarize these two state-of-the-art methods, including their working principle, characterization process, advantages, and applications in electrode interphase analysis. And the integrative techniques, which are considered as the future development perspectives, are also discussed. This review can provide important directions for next-generation characterization techniques and strategies to effectively analyze the electrode interphase for advanced batteries. Background Knee joint osteoarthritis (OA) is among the most prevalent degenerative diseases of the joints in the body. Various scoring system exists for grading OA, such as (1) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Osteoarthritis Knee Score (MOAKS), (2) clinical grading by Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), and (3) X-ray grading of the Kellgren–Lawrence grading system (K-L). Objectives To study MRI findings and MOAKS scoring of knee OA and correlation with WOMAC and K-L scoring. Setting and Design Cross-sectional study in hospital population. Materials and Methods A total 40 knee OA cases underwent an MRI of the knee. MOAKS scoring was done and compared with K-L grading and WOMAC scores. Statistical Analysis Collected data were compiled systematically and interpreted using IBM SPSS statistics software 25.0. A p -value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results The mean total WOMAC score was 9. K-L grade 2 was the most prevalent X-ray grade. Bone marrow lesion (BML) and cartilage loss in MOAKS score were greater in the medial femorotibial region. A moderate positive correlation was noted between the WOMAC score and K-L grade; full-thickness articular cartilage loss score at the medial femorotibial joint (MFTJ) and WOMAC score; partial-thickness articular cartilage loss score at lateral femorotibial joint (LFTJ) and WOMAC total pain score. No correlation was found between BML and pain severity score. Conclusion Higher WOMAC scores were associated with higher grades of K-L scoring and score of cartilage loss (partial and full thickness) of the MOAKS scoring system. Sexual violence/abuse (SV/A) is increasingly recognized requiring improved, evidence-based treatments. Delivery of group-based support in survivor services is common but often lacks evaluation. This qualitative study explored how survivors experienced groups and wanted recovery measured. Semistructured interviews with survivors of SV/A from two groups (N = 13, female: 25–64 years: mainly White British, heterosexual) were analyzed using an inductive approach to thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified including "anger," recovery "in the company of" others and "different destinations." Preventive measures are essential to reduce the risk of hazards in the ornamental fish trade, but little is known about biosecurity practices after the fish have crossed borders. Hence, the perception of enterprise attributes and the potential biosecurity gaps, and their effects on aquatic ecosystems and stakeholder involvement were evaluated using the survey. This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap by incorporating questionnaires to collect information on the actual biosecurity activities and hazard responses practiced by ornamental fish retailers and farmers in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The study's key findings on the most dominant non-native species in the market and farming reveal that postborder preventive practices within the ornamental fish supply chain may not effectively minimize the risk of introducing hazards. Also, alarming statistics indicate that 44.17% of unwanted, dead, and sick fishes are disposed of in drainage, ponds, and rivers, further exacerbating environmental concerns. Most frequently, fish diseases are treated with drugs and antibiotics such as malachite green oxalate, trichlorfon, and formalin, as well as oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline, without proper guidelines and consultation with fishery experts. Therefore, it is imperative to allocate resources to enhance pre-and at-border control measures, including risk-based surveillance of ornamental fish imports. Additionally, these findings should inform targeted awareness campaigns and provide directed training on biosecurity practices and environmental education for individuals involved in the postborder stages of the ornamental supply chain. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate variables associated with difficulty disclosing past trauma. Across several prevalence studies, 26% of adults never disclosed childhood abuse until adulthood when they were asked in a research survey or interview question. In this Institutional Review Board approved study, group differences were examined (ability and inability to disclose a traumatic event) as well as predictors for difficulty disclosing past trauma. Method: A non-clinical population (N = 693) was examined to determine prevalence rates and group differences between participants unable to tell someone about a past traumatic event (10%) compared to those who could disclose past traumatic events (90%). Variables included pathological dissociative processing, internalized shame, coping strategies (task, emotion, avoidance), and cumulative trauma exposure. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine predicting variables for disclosure difficulties. Findings: The group that had difficulty disclosing a past traumatic event had more cumulative trauma, pathological dissociative processing, emotion-oriented coping, and shame. In the first logistic regression analyses, interpersonal traumatic events were predictors for the inability to disclose a traumatic event (classified 90% of group membership). In the second logistic regression, shame and cumulative traumatic exposure were predicting factors (classified 90% of group membership). Conclusion: Difficulty speaking about a traumatic event was associated with interpersonal adult and childhood traumatic events, more internalized shame, and cumulative trauma exposure. It is recommended that clinicians working with patients with substantial traumatic exposure address shame, pathological dissociative processing, and emotion-oriented coping strategies if they detect trauma disclosure difficulties. We present a detailed photometric analysis of the newly identified binary system, A T O J 007.0177 + 43.4841 , based on observations from the Kottamia Astronomical Observatory and the Zwicky Transient Facility. The system is classified as an A-type W UMa binary with a low mass ratio of q = 0.182 ± 0.001 . A temperature difference of approximately 450 K between the components is observed, along with evidence of magnetic activity (manifested as the O'Connell effect) in the secondary star. This activity is attributed to a cool spot with a radius of 16 degrees and a temperature 30% lower than the surrounding region. The system's geometry, characterized by an almost zero fill-out ratio, suggests that it is in a transient phase between detached and contact configurations, commonly referred to as shallow contact. This interpretation is further supported by an analysis of the system's dynamical evolution and its thermal stability parameter, S = - 0.02 , indicating marginal stability. Additionally, the evolutionary status of the system is examined in the context of its position along the zero-age main sequence and terminal-age main sequence. Purpose: Building on the theory of resource-based view (RBV), this paper is determined to explore the key drivers that drive platform ecosystem adoption by small businesses and mediation mechanisms that facilitate the translation of these drivers into improved firm financial and nonfinancial performance. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data. A survey questionnaire was taken from 430 small businesses operating their businesses on various digital platform ecosystems in China to investigate the links between parameters by testing hypotheses. Digital startups operating their businesses on popular Chinese platform ecosystems, including Alibaba, Taobao, Jingdong, Maituan and HelloChe, were chosen. Findings: The finding deciphers a nuanced interplay of the adoption drivers, with innovation capability emerging as a mediation mechanism translating these drivers into improved financial and non-financial performance. Research limitations/implications: The acknowledgment of potential drawbacks, such as the focus on specific drivers of platform ecosystem adoption, highlights the need for future research to explore additional factors that may influence adoption decisions. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the causal complexity of ECF investors' peer effect through two different paths of structural social influence. Design/methodology/approach: Using the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) approach, we employ 157 samples from a Chinese ECF source to explore how peer-effect are caused by both informational and normative mechanisms. Findings: The findings suggests that there are multiple configurations could lead to ECF investors' high level peer-effect through both informational and normative mechanisms, and the informational mechanism' role depends on the normative mechanism, while the normative mechanism could lead to peer-effect independently. Nb 3 Sn and V 3 Si thin films are promising candidates for the next generation of superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. However, sputtered films often suffer from stoichiometry and strain issues. This exploratory study investigates the structural and chemical effects of thermal annealing, both i n − s i t u and post-sputtering, on DC-sputtered Nb 3 Sn and V 3 Si films with varying thicknesses, deposited on Nb or Cu substrates. Building upon our initial studies [Howard et al., Proceedings of the SRF'21, East Lansing, MI (JACoW, 2021), p. 82.], we provide fundamental insights into recrystallization, phase changes, and the issues of stoichiometry and strain. Through annealing at 950 ° C, we have successfully enabled the recrystallization of 100 nm thin Nb 3 Sn films on Nb substrates, yielding stoichiometric and strain-free grains. For 2 μ m thick films, elevated annealing temperatures led to the removal of internal strain and a slight increase in grain size. Moreover, annealing enabled a phase transformation from an unstable to a stable structure in V 3 Si films, while we observed significant Sn loss in 2 μ m thick Nb 3 Sn films after high-temperature annealing. Similarly, annealing films atop Cu substrates resulted in notable Sn and Si loss due to the generation of Cu–Sn and Cu–Si phases, followed by evaporation. We present results exploring various methods of aluminum flyer acceleration. One method uses the shock wave generated by underwater electrical explosions of thin foils supplied by a pulse generator with stored energy of ∼4.7 kJ. Utilizing the shock created by an exploding foil, a maximal free flyer velocity of ∼2000 m/s is obtained. This acceleration method is compared to results exploiting only magnetic pushing to accelerate flyers using a common strip-line configuration, resulting in much lower velocities of ∼300 m/s. We also present a modified strip-line configuration, for which a significant increase in the flyer velocity to ∼1200 m/s is measured. Finally, a hybrid strip configuration, incorporating both the effects of magnetic pushing and acceleration by exploding foil and its subsequent shock wave, results in ∼1400 m/s flyer velocity. Purpose: Cryptocurrencies have gained popularity among investors despite their high risk and volatility. Social media wields substantial influence over investors' attitudes, judgments and decisions related to investment. This study aims to investigate the associations between social media usage and cryptocurrency investment behavior. Design/methodology/approach: Utilizing the main dataset of the 2021 National Financial Capability Study and its supplementary Investor Survey, this study analyzed social media usage in general. Additionally, it separately examined 11 different social media platforms as potential sources of information for investments. Logistic regressions were performed to explore the relationship between social media, previous experiences and future considerations in investing in cryptocurrencies. Robustness checks were conducted with additional analyses. Findings: Investors who used social media for investment information were more likely to invest in cryptocurrencies and consider investing in cryptocurrencies in the future. The likelihood increased with the number of social media platforms used. Different social media platforms exhibited distinct associations with cryptocurrency investment experiences and future considerations. Purpose: The purpose and theoretical contributions of this paper are to improve current knowledge on culture's role in firms' digital transformation, as well as to identify and add a cultural "digital maturity" lens to well-known, already actionable frameworks for the digital transformation of firms. Design/methodology/approach: To increase current knowledge on culture's role in firms' digital transformation, as well as to identify and add a cultural "digital maturity" lens to well-known and actionable frameworks for the digital transformation of firms, a multi-step approach was chosen, including both literature reviews as well as a qualitative study of one company case. Findings: Early generations of digital transformation frameworks, mainly from the field of information systems (IS), did not take into consideration firms' culture. More recent research in the fields of management and organization, however, emphasizes the role of culture and key cultural attributes favorable for a digital transformation. By integrating key findings on digital transformation from these research fields, a multi-disciplinary framework could be presented, allowing any organization to plan, organize and monitor a digital transformation from three essential lenses: technical (processes and actions for transforming), social (transformation of norms and behavior) and macro (transformation of the perception of the outside world). Research limitations/implications: Only one case study was included in this study. The developed multi-disciplinary framework needs to be tested in more cases. Practical implications: Practitioners can use the new integrated framework above for evaluating the conditions for, and the progression of a digital transformation, by using the developed framework and by applying the three lenses. The solid solution Ba 1 − x Sr x TiO 3 (BSTO) displays dielectric response that is highly tunable, while also exhibiting low losses in a broad frequency regime, including the microwave band. Therefore, there is a need for a better understanding of the influence of the BSTO microstructure on its relaxor properties and performance in a variety of technological applications. Since the local polarization in BSTO is strongly dependent on composition, so is its response to an applied AC field. In this work, we have adopted a phase field method to study the frequency-dependent dielectric response of this system while accounting for the local fluctuations in the solid-solution composition. By utilizing a thermodynamic potential that includes spatial dependence on the averaged Sr content, we connected relaxor-like features in the dielectric dispersion to local spatial inhomogeneities, such as average size of Sr- or Ba-rich regions, across a wide range of temperatures. These results show that the adopted simple coarse-grained approach to the relaxor problem is sensitive enough to reveal correlations between the frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric response and modulations in the material morphology and microstructure. This paper analyzes the herding behavior that characterizes lenders' lending decisions on a microloan platform and explains how rational herding behavior can resolve the information-asymmetry problem, which is a well-known reason for the failure of online microloan platforms. Using a set of panel data on individual lending decisions acquired from Paipaidai.com (PPDai), an online microloan platform, we examine the influence of the lending decisions of prominent, experienced lenders on novice lenders to identify rational herding behavior. Our empirical analysis demonstrates that rational herding behavior can in fact efficiently reduce lender loss from borrower defaults caused by limited information. Although it is typically assumed that herding behavior is irrational, we find that it can be rational in this context and can thus shed light on why PPDai has succeeded while most other microloan platforms have failed. Accordingly, we make three key contributions: 1) we use heterogeneous herding effects to empirically determine whether lenders' herding behavior on PPDai is rational based on observational learning; 2) we investigate the moderating effect of borrower credit and novice-lender experience on herding, and we leverage this heterogeneity in lender experience to better explain loan results; and 3) because PPDai publicly provides potential lenders with a transparent credit score—in contrast to platforms like Prosper.com, which leverage hidden proprietary credit information from Experian—we further analyze the credit composition of prominent lenders to better understand the crucial determinants of rational herding. In fact, our follow-up survival simulations indicate that without rational herding, the total number of successful PPDai loans would have decreased by around 46 percent during the study period—a finding that further underlines the crucial influence of rational herding and the unique contextual factors of PPDai that have fostered it. Organisations increasingly use digital nudges to influence their workforces' behaviour without coercion or incentives. This can expose employees to arbitrary domination by infringing on their autonomy through manipulation and indoctrination. Nudges might furthermore give rise to the phenomenon of "organised immaturity." Adopting a balanced approach between overly optimistic and dystopian standpoints, I propose a framework for determining the moral permissibility of digital nudging in the workplace. In this regard, I argue that not only should organisations provide pre-discursive justification of nudges but they should also ensure that employees can challenge their implementation whenever necessary through legitimation procedures. Building on Rainer Forst's concept of the right to justification, this article offers a way to combine contract- and deliberation-based theories for addressing questions in business ethics. Recently, RNA velocity has driven a paradigmatic change in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) studies, allowing the reconstruction and prediction of directed trajectories in cell differentiation and state transitions. Most existing methods of dynamic modeling use ordinary differential equations (ODE) for individual genes without applying multivariate approaches. However, this modeling strategy inadequately captures the intrinsically stochastic nature of transcriptional dynamics governed by a cell-specific latent time across multiple genes, potentially leading to erroneous results. Here, we present SDEvelo, a generative approach to inferring RNA velocity by modeling the dynamics of unspliced and spliced RNAs via multivariate stochastic differential equations (SDE). Uniquely, SDEvelo explicitly models inherent uncertainty in transcriptional dynamics while estimating a cell-specific latent time across genes. Using both simulated and four scRNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics datasets, we show that SDEvelo can model the random dynamic patterns of mature-state cells while accurately detecting carcinogenesis. Additionally, the estimated gene-shared latent time can facilitate many downstream analyses for biological discovery. We demonstrate that SDEvelo is computationally scalable and applicable to both scRNA-seq and sequencing-based spatial transcriptomics data. RNA velocity predicts directed cell trajectories but often fails to capture inherent randomness, leading to false positives from random patterns. Objective: This study explored the relationship between blame/sympathy and blamer's/sympathizer's perceived health status. Design: We recruited participants via an online survey platform. Study 1 was a cross-sectional study using data (N = 3304, Mage = 28.22, SDage = 7.92, and 39.3% female) collected from 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions of China on February 3, 2020. Study 2 used the daily diary method collecting data from February 4 to 9, 2020. Sample (N = 2456, Mage = 28.49, SDage = 7.49, and 39.4% were female) was obtained by inviting participants in Study 1 on the same platform. Main outcome measures: Self-reported health status and life satisfaction. Results: In Study 1, blame was negatively associated with perceived health status, while sympathy was positively associated with it. Negative emotions and risk perception are the underlying mechanisms, but neither of them has effects on the relationship between sympathy and perceived health status. Study 2 replicated these results using multilevel analysis. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of people's attitudes on perceived health status. Understanding how sea turtle species move through the environment and respond to environmental features is fundamental for sustainable ecosystem management and effective conservation. This study investigates the habitat suitability of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Adriatic and Northern Ionian Seas (Central-Eastern Mediterranean) by developing and validating a multidisciplinary framework that leverages machine learning to investigate movement patterns collected by satellite tags Argos satellite tags. Satellite tracking data, enriched with sixteen environmental variables from the Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet-bathymetry, were analyzed using Random Forest models, obtaining an accuracy of 80.9% when classifying presence versus pseudo-absence of loggerhead sea turtles. As main findings, sea bottom depth, surface chlorophyll (chl-a), and mixed layer depth (MLD) were identified as the most influential features in the habitat suitability of these specimens. Moreover, statistically significant differences, evaluated using t-test statistics, were found between coastal and pelagic locations, for the different seasons, in mixed layer depth, chl-a, 3D-clorophyll, salinity and phosphate. Although based on a limited sample of tagged animals, this study demonstrates that the distribution patterns of loggerhead sea turtles in Mediterranean coastal and pelagic areas are primarily influenced by sea water features linked to productivity and, consequently, to potential prey abundance. Purpose: Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are key players in economic activities. Yet little research focuses on their management innovation's effect on innovation performance, this paper explores the impact of three sub-dimensions of management innovation (new organizational structure, new processes and new practices) on innovation performance (innovation outcome performance and innovation process performance) of SMEs in the manufacturing industry. It elucidates the mediating role of external knowledge search (search depth and search breadth) and identifies the moderating effect of digital capability. Design/methodology/approach: By collecting primary data through a questionnaire survey, this paper employs Mplus and SPSS to analyze data. Findings: This paper finds that management innovation positively affects innovation performance, with a greater impact on innovation outcome performance. Search breadth partially mediates the relationship between new organizational structure and innovation performance. Digital capability positively moderates the positive relationship between management innovation and external knowledge search. Originality/value: The theoretical contribution of this study is to supplement the research on the consequences of management innovation and to improve the theoretical relationship between management innovation and external knowledge search based on firm behavior theory. Dynamic ocean management (DOM) is a critical approach for protecting highly migratory species amid environmental variability and change. We conducted an adapted systematic review to assess how animal movement and environmental data are used in DOM applications, identifying key data traits, barriers, and research priorities. Animal tag data inform initial assessments of species distributions, development of habitat models, near real‐time model inputs, and iterative model evaluation for dynamic management. In documented examples, effective translation of scientific insights into dynamic management products has resulted from early communication between researchers and stakeholders, integration of environmental and fisheries‐dependent data into advanced habitat modeling approaches, and reformatting of outputs for interdisciplinary needs. However, challenges persist around data gaps, science‐policy translation, and technical capacity limitations. Our findings highlight the importance of intentional, collaborative data collection, translation, and sharing to enable dynamic, climate‐resilient management of migratory species. We demonstrate DOM's adaptability and provide guidance for researchers and practitioners to contribute and use impactful data that informs responsive management decision‐making. Interactions between a host organism and its associated microbiota, including symbiotic bacteria, play a crucial role in host adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Antarctica provides a unique environment for the establishment and maintenance of symbiotic relationships. One of the most extensively studied symbiotic bacteria in invertebrates is Wolbachia pipientis, which is associated with a wide variety of invertebrates. Wolbachia is known for manipulating host reproduction and having obligate or facultative mutualistic relationships with various hosts. However, there is a lack of clear understanding of the prevalence of Wolbachia in terrestrial invertebrates in Antarctica. We present the outcomes of a literature search for information on the occurrence of Wolbachia in each of the major taxonomic groups of terrestrial invertebrates (Acari, Collembola, Diptera, Rotifera, Nematoda, Tardigrada). We also performed profiling of prokaryotes based on three marker genes and Kraken2 in available whole genome sequence data obtained from Antarctic invertebrate samples. We found no reports or molecular evidence of Wolbachia in these invertebrate groups in Antarctica. We discuss possible reasons underlying this apparent absence and suggest opportunities for more targeted future research to confirm bacteria's presence or absence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
