Biopolymers are polymers of natural origin and are environmentally friendly, carbon neutral and less energy-intense additives that can be used for various geotechnical applications. Biopolymers like xanthan gum, carrageenan, chitosan, agar, gellan gum and gelatin have shown potential for improving subgrade strength, erosion resistance, and as canal liners and in slope stabilization. But minimal research has been carried out on cellulose-based biopolymers, particularly microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), for their application in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. In this study, the effect of MCC on select geotechnical properties of kaolin, a weak, highly compressible clay soil, like its liquid and plastic limits, compaction behavior, deformation behavior, unconfined compression strength (UCS) and aging, was investigated. MCC was used in dosages of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2% of the dry weight of the soil, and the dry mixing method was adopted for sample preparation. The results show that the liquid limit increased marginally by 11% but the plasticity index was nearly 74% higher than that of untreated kaolin. MCC rendered the treated soil stiffer, which is reflected in the deformation modulus, which increased with both dosage and age of the treated sample. The UCS of kaolin increased with dosage and curing period. The maximum UCS was observed for a dosage of 2% MCC at a 90-day curing period. AbstractThe significance of zinc and iron in crop production, particularly in rice-wheat cropping systems, has been increasingly recognized. The present study aimed to determine the effect of different soil samples collected from the rice-wheat cropping system of Haryana with different soil texture on rice grain yield and micronutrient content using a greenhouse trial with four levels of Fe (0, 25, 50 mg kg−1 as soil and 0.5% foliar spray of FeSO4 at 45 DAS) and four levels of Zn (0, 5, 10 mg kg−1 as soil and 0.5% foliar spray of ZnSO4 at 35 DAS). This study discovered that rice grain yield showed a positive correlation with soil Zn and Fe concentrations in soil before sowing and a negative correlation with soil Fe and Zn concentrations in soil after crop harvesting. In most of the soils studied, foliar spray alone Fe @ 0.5% foliar (45 DAS) and Zn @ 0.5% foliar (35 DAS) improved Fe and Zn concentrations in rice significantly more than soil application of 25 mg Fe kg−1 and 5 mg Zn kg−1, respectively. The rice grain yield in clay soil was 14-42% higher than in sandy soil with different doses of Zn and Fe application. The order of preponderance of different Fe and Zn fractions were CA-Fe < OM-Fe < EX-Fe < FeMnOX-Fe < Res-Fe and Res-Zn > FeMnOX-Zn > OM-Zn > CA-Zn > Ex-Zn in the soils, respectively. This paper presents an extensive comparative analysis of the experimental results of chemical stabilisation of clayey soil in laboratory conditions by comparing the effects of adding conventional stabilisers (lime, cement binder), stabilisers that can be considered as waste material (fly ash, rock flour), as well as alternative chloride-based materials (ferric chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride) on the geomechanical properties of the soil. With the aim of determining the stabiliser optimal content in the mixture with the soil, in the first part of the research, the effects of stabilisation of clayey soil of medium plasticity using the considered stabilisers with different percentage share on the change in uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and pH value of the soil at different time intervals after the treatment were analysed. In the second part of the research, additional tests were conducted on soil samples with optimal content for each of the considered stabilisers by monitoring changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the soil. These include Atterberg's limits (liquid limit and plasticity limit), modulus of compressibility in the oedometer, California bearing ratio (CBR), and swelling potential at different time intervals after the chemical treatment to determine the durability of stabilisation effects. The results of the conducted research reveal that each of the conventional, waste, and alternative materials considered as chemical stabilisers contributes to the improvement of the geomechanical properties of the clayey soil, primarily in terms of increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the swelling of the treated soil. Due to the high rate of the development of housing, transportation and hydraulic engineering construction in the last hundred years, the study of the phenomenon of creep of clay soils has become a subject of scientific research. In the study, experimental investigations of clay soil were conducted using a simple shear device in kinematic loading mode, aimed at examining the influence of shear rate on the viscosity coefficient of the clay soil and its strength characteristics. The tests were performed at four different shear rates and three different vertical load values. Based on the results of experimental and theoretical studies, the viscosity coefficients of clay soil were obtained, and a new rheological equation was proposed, which simultaneously takes into account the influence of Coulomb friction, structural cohesion, cohesion of water–colloidal bonds and viscous resistance of the soil. It has been shown that the shear rate has a significant impact on the viscosity coefficient of clay soil, and the viscosity coefficient itself is a variable quantity, depending both on the magnitude of the applied load and the duration of its application. The obtained results can be used for further improvement of methods for calculating the settlement of structures over time, as well as for predicting the time until the bearing capacity of foundation soils is exhausted. The electro‐osmosis approach efficiently facilitates the rapid dewatering of soil with high water content and contributes to reducing contaminant levels within the clay soil. However, the changes of chemical field caused by ion transport in the clay soil during electro‐osmosis process will also influence the clay soil consolidation effect. Existing theories predominantly tend to disregard this crucial physical process and its resultant effects, thereby restraining a comprehensive analysis of electro‐osmosis consolidation (EOC) behavior under intricate chemical conditions. This study introduces a concise model of EOC and ion transport considering chemical osmosis. The model considers the nonlinear variation of clay soil parameters such as compressibility, permeability, and effective diffusion coefficients, along with the interaction between EOC and ion transport. Meanwhile, the correctness of the model is verified from different aspects such as theoretical derivation and model comparison. Based on the proposed model, the impacts of the variation in electrical field intensity and chemical concentration on the coupled behaviors between EOC and ion transport are systematically investigated, with and without incorporating nonlinear consolidation characteristics. The results show that diffusion and electro‐migration exhibit a more pronounced effect on ion transport during EOC. Simultaneously, with the increase of ion concentration in clay soil pore solution, the effects of chemical osmosis become increasingly apparent, thereby enhancing clay soil settlement. Although many commercial stabilizers are available for the treatment of poor soils; agricultural, agro-industrial, and environmentally friendly stabilizers are always encouraged. In this study, an attempt has been made to assess the effects of brewery spent grain ash (BSGA) on lime-treated clay for stabilization of an expansive clay to be used as road construction material. Brewery spent grain (BSG) is an agro-industrial solid waste product obtained during the brewing of beer. Through burning in an open cylinder, it is converted to BSGA. The clay was subjected to preliminary tests to classify and identify some required engineering properties of the sample. Initially, samples were thoroughly mixed with lime by weight of clay to determine the optimum amount of lime needed throughout the experiments. Through laboratory execution trials, 10% lime was determined to be the optimal amount. Following, BSGA was added to the treated clay, which was previously treated with 10% lime, at various percentages of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10% BSGA by weight of clay. At 0% BSGA, the unsoaked and soaked California bearing ratio (CBR) rose from 13.56 and 8.24% to their greatest values of 14.99% and 9.3%, respectively, at 6% BSGA. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) values rose from 112.63 kN/m2 at 0% BSGA to 130.31 kN/m2 at 6% BSGA, which is the highest value. Understanding the factors affecting the total amount and distribution of soil organic carbon (OC) across different functional carbon pools is important to better define the future management of soil OC stocks. The interactions between soil management practices, local physicochemical soil properties and climate are essential for determining the OC content of the soil. Nevertheless, how these factors affect the total amount of OC and its distribution across carbon pools, i.e., more labile particulate (POC) and more stable mineral‐associated (MAOC) organic carbon, is only partly known. In this study, we assessed topsoil (0–20 cm) samples from 93 arable farms in the southern half of Finland to determine the total amount of OC, and its distribution in MAOC and POC, along with relevant soil properties (amount of clay and silt, aluminium and iron oxides and pH), climate (precipitation and temperature) and fertilization (mineral versus organic). The fertilization did not affect the total soil carbon content (12–58 g OC kg−1 soil). The share of OC in the MAOC fraction (on average 86% of total OC) was relatively stable across the large range of OC contents and clay contents (2%–68%). We assessed the highest feasible MAOC of the soils with boundary line analyses and their OC saturation state with Hassink's equation (Hassink, 1997). Only soils with the lowest clay content (<10% clay) were assumed to be carbon‐saturated, suggesting that most of the studied soils have a capacity to accrue more MAOC. Simple linear regression showed that clay, aluminium and iron oxides explained 9%, 21% and 22% of the variation in MAOC, respectively. Multiple regression analyses including the amount of clay, clay+silt, aluminium and iron oxides, pH, type of fertilization, precipitation and temperature as explanatory variables explained 33%–53% of the variation in OC and MAOC. In all soils, aluminium oxides were important explanatory variable for MAOC, whereas Fe oxides were significant only in soils with higher clay content (>30%). In soils with a low clay content (<30%), pH had added value in explaining MAOC. Altogether, it seems that various climatic, edaphic and soil management‐related factors are context‐dependently controlling OC and that soil textural information alone is not necessarily an adequate predictor to assess the MAOC saturation state of the soil. The present study examined how the use of soil color can help build and evaluate clay content prediction models from laboratory visible and near infrared spectroscopic data. This study was based on a regional database containing 449 soil samples collected over Karnataka state in India, which has been divided into red soils (240 samples) and black soils (209 samples) based on their Munsell soil color. Partial least squares regression models were calibrated and validated from both the regional datasets and subsets stratified as red and black soils. In addition, a random forest model was used to classify the validation soil samples into black and red classes to evaluate models' performance. First, while the clay content predicted by the regression model built from regional data was evaluated as correct at regional scale (R2val of 0.75), this model was evaluated as more accurate over black (R2val of 0.8) than red (R2val of 0.63) soil samples. Second, the regression models built from subsets stratified per soil color provided different performances than the regression model built from the regional data, both at the regional scale and soil color scale. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that (1) predictions are highly dependent on calibration data, (2) the interpretation of prediction performances relies heavily on validation data, and (3) pedological knowledge, such as soil color, can be effectively employed as an encouraging covariate in both the construction and evaluation of regression models. Bacterial leaf streak caused by Xanthomonas vasicola pv. vasculorum (Xvv) is an emerging disease in several corn-producing regions around the world. In Brazil, there is a lack of information on the survival of this bacterium in soil and crop residues. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the survival of Xvv in soil and also in infected corn crop residues under the humid subtropical climate of southern Brazil. The survival of Xvv in soil was initially investigated in sandy and clayey soils maintained at 20, 25 and 30 °C under controlled conditions. The survival of the bacterium under field conditions was studied in artificially infested clayey soil. The survival of Xvv in corn crop residues was investigated in infected residues maintained on the soil surface or buried in the soil at 20 cm deep. Under controlled conditions, regardless of the type of soil, the bacterium survived longer at 20 °C than at higher temperatures. The bacterium survived for 40 days in clayey soil kept at 20 °C and four days in sandy soil maintained at 30 °C. Under field conditions, the survival of Xvv in the soil was only for 48 h and in infected corn crop residues for up to 15 days in the samples maintained on the soil surface. In samples of infected corn residues buried in the soil, the bacterium was only detected at the time the experiment was set up. In general, the results obtained in this study revealed that Xvv survives for a short period of time in soil and in infected corn crop residues under humid subtropical conditions. Therefore, soil and corn residues may not be highly important sources of primary inoculum for the development of bacterial leaf streak on corn crops under these conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intensified drought exacerbated by climate change aggravates the development of soil desiccation cracking, triggering several weakening mechanisms in surface soils and eventually causing various geohazards and environmental problems. This study investigates the effect and mechanisms of a bio-mediated approach based on microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) for remediation of desiccation cracks in soils with different layer thicknesses. We conducted 5 MICP treatment cycles on clayey soil samples to explore the influence of layer thickness on the water evaporation properties, desiccation cracking behaviors, and calcium carbonate content and distribution of MICP-treated soils. The results show that the MICP treatment can significantly decrease the water evaporation rate, the surface crack ratio, average crack width, and total crack length of all soil samples. The crack reduction ratio reaches over 90% after 5 MICP treatment cycles. The soil layer thickness has an obvious influence on the effectiveness of MICP for the clayey soil treatment. Thicker soil samples exhibit wider desiccation cracks, which, in turn, require more MICP treatment cycles for remediation. The calcium carbonate content and distribution of MICP-treated soils is governed by the original desiccation cracks, the wider cracks in thicker soil samples result in the higher calcium carbonate content of soil nearby the cracks, and the denser cracks in thinner soil samples lead to the more homogenous distribution of calcium carbonate. The remediation of soil desiccation cracks is mainly attributed to the coupling effect of the soil volume change and the accumulation of calcium carbonate crystal during MICP treatment. The findings of this study provide new insights into the mechanisms of the interaction between MICP-treated soil and drought climate and contribute to developing environmentally friendly approaches for soil improvement in regions subjected to droughts. Background and aims: The accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) is a crucial process in mitigating climate change and ensuring soil quality. Subtropical plantations in China have shown high potential for enhancing SOC sequestration due to their high carbon sink capacity. However, the dynamics and compositions of SOC after long term afforestation are still poorly understood. Methods: We examined the dynamics of SOC and its fractions of different soil layers (0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, 10–20 cm, 20–40 cm, 40–80 cm, 80–100 cm) in a mixed broadleaf-conifer plantation (BCP), a Masson pine plantation (MP), and a Slash pine plantation (SP), and an enclosed forest (EF) in subtropical China. Both physical fractions (particulate organic carbon (POC), soil clay organic carbon (SOCclay), soil silt organic carbon (SOCsilt)) and chemical fractions (iron-aluminum-bound organic carbon (Fe/Al-OC), and calcium-bound organic carbon (Ca-OC)) were determined. Additionally, soil physicochemical properties were further analyzed. Results: Our results showed the SOC storage in the EF, BCP, MP, and SP in 2019 increased by 82%, 238%, 126%, and 103% respectively compared to 1984. The proportions of MAOC to SOC were respectively as follows: SP (65.9%) > BCP (64.9%) > EF (61.6%) > MP (53.9%). The mean proportions of SOCclay to MAOC were as follows: BCP (71.1%) > EF (66.9%) > MP (58.5%) > SP (51.0%). The mean proportions of Fe/Al-OC to MAOC were as follows: EF (53.3%) > SP (48.3%) > MP (47.9%) > BCP (39.8%). All these proportion increased with soil depth. RDA and PLS-SEM analysis revealed that soil nitrogen content and electrochemical properties (pH and EC) were the main factors that controlled SOC content and fractions. Conclusions: Subtropical plantations have significant soil carbon sequestration capabilities, but they are currently nearing saturation. Soil nitrogen content may be key factor limiting further enhancement of carbon sequestration. Due to the high proportion of MAOC and relative consistent SOC storage, BCP and SP are recommended as priorities for plantation regeneration in subtropical China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Climate warming can potentially cause more plant-derived organic substrates into the surface soil. The newly produced carbon may accelerate or restrict native soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition by priming effects (PE), so as to increase the uncertainty of the feedback prediction between climate change and soil carbon pool. However, it is controversial about the direction and driving factors of the PE of surface SOC in the warming world. Methods: In this meta-analysis, we investigated 1680 pairwise PE determined by 13C or 14C isotope labeling method in surface soils across cropland, grassland and forest from 39 warming experiments to generalize the direction and influencing factors of the warming effects on PE. Results: The meta-analysis showed that warming decreased PE across different ecosystems. The decrease was much greater in forest (effect size: -6.2) than in cropland (effect size: -2.6) and grassland (effect size: -1.7) and was more severe in simple substrates (effect size: -12.1), i.e., small molecules such as glucose and amino acid than that in complex substrates (effect size: -1.7), including plant tissues, residues and pyrolysis products, etc. The effect size of warming on PE was positively correlated with soil clay and pH, while negatively correlated with SOC content, total nitrogen, soil C/N ratio and warming intensity. Conclusions: These findings emphasize that warming will decrease the primed surface SOC loss, particularly in forest or organic matter-rich soils and larger warming intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study uses fly-ash-based superplasticized geopolymer by adding a naphthalene-centered superplasticizer to the geopolymerized soil. Alkali-binder ratios and alkali-activator ratios are varied simultaneously with a molarity of 10M. The optimum dosages of binder, geopolymer, and superplasticized geopolymer are found from unconfined compression tests. California Bearing Ratio (CBR), pH, consolidation, water-holding capacity, and microstructure tests were performed on optimum dosages. The clayey soil's undrained shear strength and CBR value increased as the geopolymer was superplasticized. The 28-day undrained shear strength of geopolymerized clay was around 300 kPa, attained within three days of the curing period with superplasticized geopolymer. This is because adding a superplasticizer increases the polymerization reaction rate and improves the geopolymer's performance. The maximum undrained shear strength was attained within seven days of the curing period for both cases. The undrained shear strength after a curing period of 7, 14, and 28 days for geopolymer and superplasticized geopolymer was found to be almost the same value, which shows that after seven days, curing has little role in strength improvement. The hydraulic conductivity and coefficient of consolidation of geopolymerized soil increased with the addition of superplasticizer due to the reduction in fine particles and plasticity of the residual soil. Microstructural studies using scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction techniques showed an interaction between soil, geopolymer, and superplasticizer, thus confirming the formation of geopolymer gel and increased polymerization rate with the superplasticizer. This study investigates the evolution of soil pore structure and shear strength deterioration in compacted clayey soil under controlled wetting and drying (wd) cycles, which are expected to become more frequent due to climate change. Thirty soil samples were compacted at optimal moisture content and 90% maximum dry density. These samples were then subjected to 0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 controlled wd cycles from saturation to the wilting point, and volumetric changes were recorded during each cycle. After the wd treatment, the soil samples were scanned using X-ray computed tomography (CT) at 50 μm resolution and then sheared under unconsolidated–undrained and consolidated–undrained conditions in a triaxial test. Significant shrinkage and swelling of soil samples were observed during wd cycles, with average volumetric strain fluctuating between +12% at saturation and −5% at the wilting point. X-ray CT visualisation and analysis revealed higher porosity, more prominent pores, and increased pore length in soil samples with increasing wd cycles. Both undrained and effective soil shear strength markedly decreased with increasing wd cycles. CT-derived macroporosity and pore length were significant predictors of the soil's undrained and effective shear strength when exposed to wd cycles. The findings emphasise the considerable impact of climate change, specifically wd cycles, on clayey soil, highlighting the need for consideration in the design of earth-based infrastructure. The degree of salinity, the freezing point, and the amount of unfrozen water are key factors in predicting the temperature, humidity, and mechanical behavior of saline permafrost soils used in construction as foundations for buildings. The results of the experimental studies are presented and a method for calculation of the amount of unfrozen water in saline soils is proposed. Soil nutrient cycling, the distribution of soil aggregates, and their stability are directly influenced by soil texture. Different sizes of soil aggregates provide microhabitats for microorganisms and therefore influence soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization. The purpose of the present study was to assess the aggregate stability and dynamics of carbon and nitrogen in macroaggregate size fractions (1-8 mm) with different clay content from meadow soils. Surface soil samples (0-15 cm) were collected from 4- to 5-year-old forage crops. Four macroaggregate size classes were isolated by dry sieving and analyzed for their mass proportions: fine macroaggregates (FM) (less than 1 mm), medium-fine macroaggregates (MFM) (1-2 mm), mediumcoarse macroaggregates (MCM) (2-4 mm), and large-coarse macroaggregates (LCM) (4-8 mm). The dry mean weight diameter (MWD), organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), carbon and nitrogen of microbial biomass (C-MB, N-MB) were determined. CO2 emission and net nitrogen mineralized (NM) were measured after 14 weeks of incubation. The amounts of FM were significantly lower than those of intermediate macroaggregates (MCM and MFM) and decreased markedly with increasing clay content within soil macroaggregates. In general, the amounts of macroaggregate size fractions were lowest in soils with high clay content. MWD exhibited a significant correlation with particle size distribution, OC, and MB-C. OC, TN, MB-C, and MB-N contents within macroaggregates increased with decreasing macroaggregate size and increasing clay content of macroaggregate fractions. The CO2 emission and NM content increased with increasing macroaggregate size, indicating higher organic C and N mineralization activity in larger macroaggregates. Mineralization of OC was lowest in macroaggregate fractions with the highest clay content. We conclude that clay content can increase the protection of microbial biomass in meadow soils. Geotechnical designs and analyses of earth structures and foundations exclusively involve the assessment and consideration of unsaturated soil shear strength. The laboratory testing equipment and methods for predicting the unsaturated soil shear strength are complicated and more expensive. The experimental program attempted to involve undrained triaxial and filter paper for evaluating the unsaturated soil shear strength of identically compacted clayey soil. This study undertakes a comparison of shear strength in clayey soil under undrained loads, examining both saturated and unsaturated conditions. A 60 kPa air entry suction value is the key point at which linearity between the unsaturated shear strength parameter Øb and effective friction Ø′ with 15° linear slopes turns to non-linearity. Unsaturated shear strength increased by 22.76% in optimally wet conditions, 52.68% in optimum conditions, and 77.81% in optimally dry conditions as compared to saturated shear strength. This study utilizes an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict clayey soil's unsaturated shear strength, finding that the optimal ANN configuration (2-5-1 topology, Levenberg–Marquard optimization, and logsig transfer function) achieved high reliability with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9289 and mean square error values of 2.22, 7.12, and 3.012 for training, testing, and validation, respectively. This experimental investigation improves our understanding of clayey soil shear strength and emphasizes the importance of saturation and moisture content in geotechnical assessments under undrained loading conditions. Containment of hazardous waste is one of the methods that can be used today for its disposal worldwide, especially in landfills. In order to preserve groundwater, landfills are constructed on a natural or reconstituted clay layer of low permeability, known as a passive safety barrier. This paper presents an experimental laboratory study that aims to upgrade local materials for use as a passive barrier in the bottoms of hazardous waste storage facilities (HWSCs). The basic materials are clays from the Adrar region in southern Algeria. An experimental study based on physical-chemical characterization and mechanical tests was performed on 2 samples of clayey soils (AA, Adrar clay, and AB, Bouda clay). Physico-chemical and mechanical characterization of Adrar clay (AA) mixtures with lime was conducted to minimize swelling and improve the studied soil. Coleostephus myconis (L.) Cass. ex Rchb. subsp. discolor (Guss.) Arrigoni (Asteraceae, Asteroideae, Anthemideae) has been previously reported to occur naturally in western Italy and its Mediterranean islands. In 2013, native populations of Coleostephus myconis subsp. discolor were recorded for the first time in Tunisia. This is also the first report of this taxon to North Africa. In Tunisia, Coleostephus myconis subsp. discolor grows in coastal areas, on open clayey soils, and in communities of thermophilous herbs. The scheme and properties of jet-grouting and the construction history and measured behavior of the wall-soil system are presented. A finite element analysis was conducted to estimate the settlement, lateral displacement, and horizontal earth pressure of the quay wall. The computed results compare well with the field data during and after construction. The effect of area replacement ratio, quantifying the degree of ground improvement, on the response of the quay walls was also investigated. The undrained bearing capacity to eccentric and inclined loading of foundations resting on a two-layered clay soil is examined by 2D and 3D FE analyses. The ratio of the shear strength of two layers, the relative thickness of the uppermost layer in terms of the foundation width and the normalized values of eccentricity and horizontal loads are the key parameters of a comprehensive finite element study. Two cases of inhomogeneity referring to strength ratio higher or lower than unity, are separately examined, as they are associated with different failure mechanisms. The failure mode is examined in several cases, giving additional insight into the mechanics of the problem. Moreover, for a better visual understanding of how the overturning moment and horizontal force affect the ultimate capacity, the results are presented in terms of 3D, BC or sliding interaction diagrams. Soils containing swelling clays, such as montmorillonite, can develop significant pressures due to their water content, or can absorb significant surrounding water, leading to potentially dramatic volume changes. This work presents a generalized Terzaghi's stress principle that when rewritten in terms of measurable quantities, relates overburden pressure to volumetric change. In the limiting case of 100% clay it simplifies to the pressure-volumetric relationship developed by Phillip Low, and in the other extreme (no clay) Terzaghi's stress principle is obtained. The relationship is derived using Hybrid Mixture Theory, a multi-scale mixture theoretical framework, which allows for developing a more generalized mathematical model for multi-physics problems. The equation relating overburden pressure to volume incorporates the clay and water content, bulk liquid pressure, and four empirical constants. Extensive experimental studies have demonstrated the time-dependent mechanical behaviors of frozen soil. Nonetheless, limited studies are focusing on the constitutive modeling of the time-dependent stress–strain behaviors of frozen clay soils at different subzero temperatures. The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the time-dependent behavior of frozen clay soils at a temperature range of 0 °C to − 15 °C. The Drucker–Prager model is adopted along with the Singh–Mitchell creep model to simulate time-dependent uniaxial compression and stress relaxation behaviors of frozen sandy clay soil. The numerical modeling is implemented through the finite element method based on the platform of Abaqus. The constitutive modeling is calibrated by a series of experimental results on laboratory-prepared frozen sandy clay soils, where the strain hardening, the post-peak softening, and stress relaxation behaviors are captured. Our results show that both the rate-dependent model and creep model should be adopted to characterize a comprehensive time-dependent behavior of frozen soils. The rate-dependent stress–strain behaviors heavily rely on the rate- and temperature-dependent hardening functions, where the creep strain provides a very limited contribution. This study proposes a constitutive model to simulate the clayey soil response to the external loads during soil-structure interaction, specifically in the context of pile installation and subsequent set-up. The model considers the alteration of soil structure during prolonged penetration and the gradual regaining of its thixotropic strength. The model is based on the disturbed state concept and critical state theory, with the Modified Cam-Clay model used to define the intact state response. The proposed model, referred to as the Critical State and Disturbed State Concept model, captures the elastoplastic behavior of both normally consolidated and over-consolidated soils. It was validated using triaxial test results and implemented in Abaqus software to simulate pile driving and the set-up phenomenon occurs after the end of pile driving. Hard soils-weak rocks combine characteristics of soil behavior and rock behavior. Perhaps the most distinct among them is brittleness reducing shear strength significantly after failure with very little additional shear displacement combined with intense dilation. Several hard soils-weak rocks were tested under drained direct shear conditions following consolidation to various vertical stress values. All of them exhibited very high reduction of shear strength after rupture, ranging from 32 to 71% taking place in as little as 0.1 mm of additional shear displacement. This loss of strength resulted in very large decrease of cohesion intercept and for all soils significant decrease in the angle of shearing resistance. Dilation was abrupt during rupture and was as high as 1.2 mm for the coarsest of the soils. Dilation was exhibited for all vertical stress values applied, never switching to contraction even for the highest vertical stress applied except one point for one soil. Percentage loss of peak shear strength after failure remained very high even for the highest vertical stress values applied, with points of percentage loss of peak strength with vertical stress falling in a very tight region for all soils. This is in clear difference to both the position of points falling on the same plot for a preconsolidated clayey soil and the higher rate of strength loss decrease with increasing vertical stress compared to the hard soils-weak rocks tested. The test results presented add to the existing understanding of the behavior of hard soils-weak rocks under drained direct shear and constitute examples of behavior of very brittle hard soils-weak rocks. Contaminant soil remediation has potential engineering applications with various stabilization techniques addressing heavy metal contamination. Conventional soil stabilizers, however, have an environmental impact, promoting international research into environmentally friendly alternatives. Using waste byproducts to produce geopolymer binders as new green cementitious materials can provide an environmentally friendly and effective option for soil improvement. Silica-rich wastes have been advanced as a sustainable option for soil stabilization. The effectiveness of alkaline-activated silica-rich wastes in stabilizing cadmium-contaminated soil and its potential engineering utilization remain of profound significance, demanding sustained and rigorous research investigation. Cadmium was immobilized in silty clay soil by rich silica waste products—fly ash, silica fume, and rice husk ash—at various percentages with 4.5 and 6.5-molar alkaline activators. Unconfined compressive strength tests assessed soil behavior, while Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), pH tests, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope analyses explained cadmium immobilization mechanisms. The experimental results revealed that alkali-activated silica-rich wastes enhanced strength and cementitious properties and reduced cadmium leaching in the contaminated silty clay. The Finite Element Method was also employed to analyze the bearing capacity of the stabilized contaminated soil. The numerical results support the experimental results and confirm increased soil strength and reduced compressibility, endorsing the efficacy of the stabilization techniques and environmental benefits. Electrical conductivity models have been widely used to estimate water content and petrophysical properties of soils in hydrogeophysical studies. However, these models are typically only valid for soils with non‐expandable matrices because they were originally developed for clean sandstone reservoir rocks. Soils containing swelling clays are characterized by matrices that expand/contract upon gaining/losing water. In this laboratory study, we demonstrate that soil matrix changes affect saturation estimation using Archie's laws. A sample of a soil containing a swelling clay was fully saturated with a potassium chloride solution, then left to dry evaporatively at room temperature for 8 days. The complex resistivity of the soil, along with its weight and volume shrinkage, were measured daily during the drying period, and the surface conductivity was calculated based on previous empirical findings. Over the course of the study, the simultaneous evaporation yielded a 33% decrease in volume and caused a nonlinear reduction in saturation with decreasing water content. Accounting for surface conductivity and correcting for saturation using the calculated volume reduction resulted in a power‐law relationship with high R2 values between resistivity and saturation along with reasonable saturation exponents. On the contrary, neglecting either surface conductivity or shrinkage caused similar underestimations of saturation exponents. These results indicate that the application of Archie's second law to soils with swelling clays leads to erroneous predictions of resistivity if saturation values are not corrected for changes in the volume of the soil and surface conductivity is neglected. The diversification of species for bioenergy silviculture in Amazonia will help several local and/or regional industrial segments. Thus, the expansion of knowledge on silvicultural practices of Tachigali vulgaris will support future commercial-scale plantations in Amazonia. This study aimed to evaluate possible differences in diameter, height, and wood volume of T. vulgaris trees grown under different nutritional doses, on two soil texture classes. In addition, we sought to determine the appropriate nutritional dose for the studied types of soil texture aiming at the production of energy wood. The study was conducted in two experimental areas of 1.6 ha each, located in the municipality of Almeirim – Pará, Brazil. Independent analyses were performed in both experimental areas at each age. The experiments were set up in a randomized block design with four blocks. A factorial scheme considering four phosphorus and three potassium doses were adopted, totaling 12 treatments. The diameter at 1.30 m (DBH), equivalent diameter, total height of the trees, and the commercial wood volume with bark per hectare (Vwb ha−1) were evaluated. A significant effect of nutrient doses was reported on DBH at the age of 2 years for the soil with a sandy loam texture. The Vwb ha−1 of the trees at 4, 5, and 6 years old was significantly affected by fertilization in clayey soils. Under the conditions of the present study, the nutritional doses of 0 kg ha−1 of triple superphosphate and 172 kg ha−1 of potassium chloride are recommended for the area with Oxisol of sandy loam texture and 195 kg ha−1 of triple superphosphate and 343 kg ha−1 of potassium chloride are recommended for the area with Oxisol of clayey texture. Black wattle is a tree native to Australia and commercially planted in South Africa and Brazil. Replacement of exported nutrients by wood and bark harvesting, associated with the maintenance of harvest residues, increases productivity, thus maintaining production sustainability. Here, we review recent advances in soil nutrient dynamics, harvest residue management (HRM), and soil organic matter in black wattle plantations. Over the 7–11-year cycle of black wattle, N is the most exported macronutrient (458–1509 kg ha− 1), followed by K (200–766 kg ha− 1), Ca (270–717 kg ha− 1), Mg (62–128 kg ha− 1), S (29–57 kg ha− 1) and P (16–40 kg ha− 1). The average increase in bark yield to 20 kg P ha− 1 applications on sandy soils was 2.7–2.9 t ha− 1 and on clay soils from 2.8 to 8.7 t ha− 1. Sandy soils with low K are more responsive to fertilizer, and rates must consider the K content and cation exchange capacity. Ca and Mg addition responses are more likely when in the topsoil they are in low concentrations (< 0.75 and 0.41 cmolc dm− 3, respectively). Micronutrient fertilization reduces the occurrence of gummosis caused by Phytophthora spp, and B deficiency is the most common and can be supplied by fertilization or foliar application (1 g B L− 1). Few studies have evaluated the impact of black wattle HRM on soil organic matter (SOM) and its effects on production. In civil engineering, some soils cause many problems in terms of geotechnical engineering. Especially high plasticity clayey soils cause serious problems in road, airport, pavement and highway construction. Such soils can be stabilized using the chemical stabilization method. Additives such as lime, cement, fly ash and blast furnace slag are generally used in chemical stabilization. In addition, in recent years, there have been many studies on the use of natural and artificial fibers in ground stabilization. In this study, the effects of basalt fiber and mineral additives on the microstructure of clay soil were examined. Microstructures of pure and additively mixed clayey soil specimens were investigated for this purpose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed on compacted soil specimens. In sum, it has been shown that the addition of lime, fly ash, and silica fume is effective in improving the compactivity properties. Pore sizes in SEM images vary depending on additive addition. Soil heavy metal (HM) control has become a pressing global ecological and environmental issue, with a significant focus on the western Dabie Mountain in China, a region that is recognized for its ecological barriers and water sources. We analyzed the concentrations, pollution status, and potential ecological risks of 10 HMs (i.e., Cu, +Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Co, Cd, As, Hg, and Mn) in the topsoil of different ecosystems in this region. The effects of four soil groups (Anthrosol, Fluvisols, Gleysol, and Alisols) and three soil texture types (sandy, clayey, and loamy soils) on the above aspects were also analyzed. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) models were performed to identify and quantify the potential sources and contribution rates of these HMs. Results showed that the level of HM pollution may be negligible, and there was no potential ecological risk. Of all metals, Pb and Cd exhibited the highest levels of pollution. The potential ecological risk associated with soil HMs decreased from croplands to urban and further to forests. Cu and Co were more likely to accumulate in Anthrosols, while Alisols were more likely to accumulate Pb, Cd, and Hg and had a higher overall potential ecological risk. The overall risk in clayey and loamy soils is both higher than in sandy soils. The HM accumulation in topsoil was closely related to the soil organic matter and clay contents. The potential main sources of HMs in this region can be agricultural activities, soil parent material, mining, industrial activities, and vehicle emissions. These findings suggest that special attention should be paid to soil Pb and Cd in western Dabie Mountain. In response to the practical production challenges posed by the unreliable operation of the V-shaped squeezing soil-covering and -pressing device (VCP) for planters under clay soil conditions in Northeast China, incomplete seed furrow closure, and severe soil adhesion on pressing wheels, this study proposes a device with star-toothed concave discs for soil-covering and -pressing (STCP) with the aim of enhancing the soil-covering quality of planters. The main working principles of STCP were expounded, and its main structural and installation parameters were determined and designed. Based on bionics, with the dung beetle's protruding head structure as the research object and UHMWPE as the material, an optimized protuberance-type bionic pressing wheel was designed. A Box–Behnken experiment was conducted by taking the width of the compression wheel, the spring deformation, and the installation angle as experimental factors, as well as the weight of the soil adhered to the surface of the pressing wheel (SW) and the soil compactness (SC) as the evaluation indicators. The optimal structural parameters of the pressing device were determined as follows: the width of the pressing wheel was 60.57 mm, the spring deformation was 55.19 mm, and the installation angle was 10.70°. The field comparison tests of soil covering performance showed that the star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device can effectively solve the problem of seed "hanging" and "drying". The average covered soil weight of the star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device was 241.46 g, and the average covered soil weight of VCP was 223.56 g. Compared with VCP, the average covered soil weight of STCP increased by 8.01%. The variation coefficient of covered soil weight after the operation of the star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device was 3.71%, which was more uniform than VCP. The field comparison tests of soil-covering thickness showed that the uniformity of soil-covering thickness can be significantly improved by adding a star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device to VCP. The comparative tests of soil anti-adhesive showed that the convex hull type pressing wheels optimized by bionics had better soil anti-adhesive performance, and the soil adhesion weight was reduced by 43.68% compared with VCP. Ridge-breaking earth cultivation is a new agronomic technology that simplifies and efficiently cultivates ratoon sugarcane. However, traditional cultivators cannot adapt to the distribution of residual stumps, inter-row specifications, and hardened clay soil. This results in substandard soil fragmentation, poor ridge quality, and reduced operational reliability. To address these issues, this article proposes an integrated earth cultivator structure capable of breaking ridges, loosening soil, and raising ridges simultaneously. It is designed to enhance the breaking of tillage layers and the filling of ridges through the coordinated action of multiple soil-engaging components. The effects of pre-loosening by the ridge-breaking plow, high-energy crushing, and throwing by the spirally arranged dense rotary blade group, and soil gathering by the deflector are comprehensively utilized. Additionally, lateral pushing by the ridging plough is employed. Discrete element and finite element simulation results show that densely toothed blades can improve soil supply capacity and structural reliability. This is achieved by increasing the amount of soil throwback and reducing concentrated stress levels. Soil fragmentation rate (SFR) and ridge height (RH) were further used as indicators. Field experiments were conducted to study the effects of operating parameters on breaking and ridging performance. The optimal parameter solution was determined as a forward speed of 0.85 m·s−1 and rotary speed of 289.7 r·min−1. With this adaptive configuration, SFR and RH were improved by 12.4% and 38.5%, respectively, compared with conventional earth cultivators. Additionally, the RSM value of rotary tillage power (Pr) was reduced by 39.6%. Improvements in crushing hardened fields, constructing ridges, and reducing cutting energy consumption have proven effective. Objective: To estimate the ammonia volatilization rate, using a texture gradient with increasing doses of ammonium in alkaline soils. Design/Methodology/Approach: The experiment took place in the Análisis Químico de Suelos lab of the Soil Department of the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo. The incubations consisted of 25 g of soil from the former Texcoco lake, with 12.5% clay. The soil was air-dried and sieved with a no. 10 mesh. The soil was mixed with three different concentrations (17.5%, 22.5%, and 32.5%) of bentonite, in order to increase clay content. The mixtures were placed in plastic containers with airtight seals. Twelve-point five mL of an ammonium sulfate solution (with 150, 300, 450, 600, and 750 mg of nitrogen kg soil-1 ) was added. The ammonia was recovered in a container with a boric acid solution. Volumetry was used to quantify ammonium. A completely randomized design with two factors (clay content and ammonium dose) was used. Data were analyzed with a regression analysis, analysis of variance, and Tukey Multiple Comparison Test, using the SAS OnDemand for Academics software. Results: The ammonia volatilization has a linear trend, with the concentration of the applied nitrogen. The volatilization rate ranged from 0.02 to 0.03 mg of ammonium per milligram of the nitrogen applied per kg soil-1 . Significant statistical differences were recorded between the effect of the N dose and the clay content on the ammonia volatilization rate. Study Limitations/Implications: Clay content in the soil and ammonia volatilization rate can be used as an indicator to estimate ammonia losses and the ammonia adsorption capacity of the soil. Findings/Conclusions: Ammonia volatilization is independent from clay content and takes place immediately after its application. It has a linear trend regarding the ammonia dose applied. This study investigated the mechanical properties of a low-plasticity clay soil reinforced with polypropylene (PP) fiber in various contents (0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15%, and 0.20%) and lengths (6, 12, and 19 mm). The reinforced specimens were subjected to unconsolidated-undrained (UU) triaxial compression tests under three different confining pressures (50, 100, and 200 kPa). The optimum fiber contents in specimens reinforced with 6-, 12-, and 19-mm PP fiber were determined as 0.15%, 0.15%, and 0.20%, respectively. As a result, the highest values regarding deviator stress at failure (σdev), energy absorption capacity (EAC), and shear strength parameters occurred in specimens containing 0.20% PP (19 mm). As a result of the reinforcement process, the most remarkable improvements in the σdev, cohesion, internal friction angle, and EAC values of the natural soil are 59.95%, 21.80%, 63%, and 34.70%, respectively. Linear and nonlinear relationships between σdev and fiber length, fiber content, and confining pressure were investigated by multiple linear regression and artificial neural network methods. This research evaluates the performance of two low- and high-plasticity clays as the sole precursors to develop alkaline activation at ambient temperature. NaOH solutions with different concentrations of 2 to 10 mol/L along with binary solutions with NaAlO2/NaOH mass ratios of 1 and 0.75 for CL and CH clays, respectively, have been used as alkaline activators. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), indirect tensile strength (ITS), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and Atterberg limits tests have all been conducted to thoroughly assess the geotechnical properties of alkali-activated clays. The experimental results show that CL with the best performance when mixed with 8 M NaOH activator renders higher mechanical strength and stiffness compared to CH showing a peak at 4 M NaOH. This observation is primarily attributed to the higher amorphous content and a weak interlayer force in CL that in turn contributes to more reactive silicate phases and gel products. Moreover, binary solution considerably enhances the mechanical performance of parent clays by modifying the Si/Al ratio in the mixture. Another important observation is the vulnerability of the alkali-activated clays to cracks and expansion due to alkali–silica reactions, leading to a significant drop in their mechanical strength and stiffness. Microstructural analyses also reveal the increase in amorphous content and the formation of flocculated particles covered by aluminosilicate gels, especially in CL-based samples where the layer-like structure of clay changes to sponge-like with globular units. More importantly, uncalcined clay-based samples are observed to be prone to the curing time-dependent cracking associated with expanding phases due to alkali–silica reactions or flocculated particles. These observations could be useful in geotechnical engineering practice for a variety of field applications in terms of both safety and performance because not only natural clays have been used as the sole precursors but also a relatively low alkali concentration has contributed to the optimum improvement of the composite material. Offshore floating systems are held in position with chains that connect the floater to anchors embedded in the seabed. An essential component for calculating the overall mooring capacity is an accurate assessment of the holding resistance from the anchor chains. Existing studies generally simplify the (complex) chain geometry to that of a cylindrical bar, which does not account for the intricate geometry of the connected chain links. This paper reports on three-dimensional finite-element modeling that defined the capacity of a link of anchor chain in clay soil with consideration of the geometry of the chain links, including the influence from adjacent links. Both stud link and studless links were considered, along with the effect of embedment depth, link direction angle, and interface condition. The soil resistance acting on the chain links, represented by uniaxial bearing capacity factors Nn,max , Ns,max , and Nt,max along the normal, lateral, and axial directions of the chain link, respectively, were derived, and the soil failure mechanisms for these conditions are discussed. Equivalent bearing capacity factors Nq and Na were derived by converting the soil resistance to normal and tangential resistances (q and f) acting on an equivalent cylindrical bar. Suction bucket jackets have been used as foundations for offshore wind turbines in intermediate water depths where layered soil stratigraphies are often encountered. Although suction installation in layered soils has been studied, experimental data on the in-service response is scarce. During installation in stratigraphies containing a low permeability layer underlain by a high permeability layer, suction is transferred to the underlying layer when the pressure at the lid invert is sufficient to uplift the low permeability plug. This suction-transfer mechanism also affects the in-service response, albeit the load-sharing mechanism is not well understood. This paper presents data from centrifuge tests of suction buckets subjected to constant amplitude and varying amplitude cyclic vertical loading in two stratigraphies—a sand with an overlying clay layer and in a sand with a sandwiched clay layer. These experiments show that tensile stresses exceeding the vented tensile resistance can be withstood without significant uplift of the bucket in both stratigraphies, even under a zero mean stress. Plug uplift was shown to have an important effect on the amount of stress transferred to the skirts, with the load-sharing mechanism depending on the stratigraphy. Additionally, the load-sharing mechanism and the bucket in-service resistance was shown to depend on the effectiveness of the clay in sealing the soil plug within the bucket, with a more effective seal resulting in higher tensile resistance and therefore better performance. Introduction. The available methods of assessment of bearing capacity by deformations of foundations mainly take into account single static loads of short duration or cyclic loads with unchanged values during the whole period of operation. The effect of cyclic loading of non-stationary regimes on the behavior of soil bases is practically not studied. In this connection, the research was carried out to develop a method for calculating the settlement of the bearing capacity of clay foundations under block cyclic loading.Materials and methods. To achieve the purpose of this paper, experimental studies of clay foundations in triaxial compression and tray test devices, as well as theoretical studies to determine the bearing capacity and settlement of clay foundations under different loading regimes were carried out.Results. On the basis of existing calculations of bearing capacity and settlement of foundations and the study of the behavior of clay soils under cyclic loads, the equations in compact form are obtained, which make it possible to take into account the peculiarities of deformation of clay soils significantly reducing the complexity and accuracy of the calculations. The development of methods for calculating the bearing capacity and settlement of clay foundations under block cyclic loads is at a sufficiently high level.Conclusions. A method for calculating the bearing capacity of clay foundations under block cyclic loading is proposed and an engineering method for calculating the settlement of clay foundations is developed, based on the method of layer-by-layer summation, which takes into account the simultaneous change in the spatial stress-strain state and mechanical characteristics of soils in the process of mode block cyclic loading.

AbstractDamping plays a crucial role in the design of offshore wind turbine (OWT) monopile foundations. The soil damping of the monopile-soil system (MSS) represents the energy dissipation mechanism arising from the interaction between the pile and the soil. It is typically derived by back-calculating from the overall damping measured in the entire OWT structure. However, few studies have independently examined the soil damping in MSS, and the impact of key parameters such as pile diameter, pile embedded depth, cyclic load amplitude, and load eccentricity on the variation of soil damping in MSS remains unclear. This paper introduces an elastoplastic-damage constitutive model for the numerical simulation of the damping ratio variation in seabed soil and MSS. The model is implemented in ABAQUS software and validated against cyclic triaxial tests on stiff clay soil. On this basis, a three-dimensional finite element sensitivity study was conducted to elucidate the effect of these key parameters on the MSS damping ratio. The results of the study reveal that the MSS damping ratio exhibits a nonlinear and asymmetric trend as the loading cycles increase. The MSS damping ratio decreases with increasing pile diameter and embedded depth but increases with increasing lateral cyclic load amplitude and load eccentricity from the mudline.
