Objective: To evaluate the morphological and thermo-mechanical properties of a bioplastc film obtained from orange peel. Design/methodology/approach: Pectin, a polysaccharide obtained from orange peel, has the potential to be used as a raw material in the bioplastics industry. The samples obtained were characterized by the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) technique, mechanical tension and by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results: The elastic modulus was in the range of 7.7 to 29.9 MPa, depending on the plasticizer content. The thermogravimetric analysis showed a thermal decomposition between 134.42 to 153.98 °C depending on the plasticizer content and up to five events were identified. Limitations of the study/implications: During the process, a pectin yield of 75% of orange peel was obtained. Findings/conclusions: In developing countries such as Mexico, waste from agricultural and agro-industrial activities represents an important source of natural carbohydrate polymers that can be used to produce bioplastics, intended to replace petroleum-derived materials. In the case of orange peel, it can become a potential raw material to obtain value-added products in sectors of the food industry. Sargassum is a type of marine algae that has caused environmental problems in Mexico because it arrives in high quantities along the Mexican coast, especially in the Mexican Caribbean. This situation has become an environmental and economic problem, impacting tourism and other activities. As a result, it is reasonable to try to find an application for these algae. Recently, some applications in civil construction, cosmetics, and the food industry, among others, have been reported. The present work evaluates the thermal and structural properties of new polypropylene (PP)–Sargassum-based composites. Also, the effect of adding calcium stearate (CS) to increase the interaction between PP and Sargassum particles was investigated. PP–Sargassum particle composites were prepared by a melt mixing process, and the properties of these composites were evaluated using thermal techniques such as dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The DMA results showed that composites with low concentrations of Sargassum particles perform better than those with higher concentrations. When CS was added to composites, there was a significant improvement in storage modulus compared with composites without CS. This was attributed to the good adhesion of the particles to the matrix because the mobility of macromolecules increased in the presence of CS. The thermal stability of PP–Sargassum particle composites decreases when the amount of particles increases, and the addition of CS does not positively affect the thermal behavior of composites. Agro-industrial wastes such as wheat husk (WH) are renewable sources of organic and inorganic substances, including cellulose, lignin, and aluminosilicates, which can be transformed into advanced materials with high added value. The use of geopolymers is a strategy to take advantage of the inorganic substances by obtaining inorganic polymers, which have been used as additives, e.g., for cement and refractory brick products or ceramic precursors. In this research, the WH native to northern Mexico was used as a source to produce wheat husk ash (WHA) following its calcination at 1050 °C. In addition, geopolymers were synthesized from the WHA by varying the concentrations of the alkaline activator (NaOH) from 16 M to 30 M, namely Geo 16M, Geo 20M, Geo 25M, and Geo 30M. At the same time, a commercial microwave radiation process was employed as the curing source. Furthermore, the geopolymers synthesized with 16 M and 30 M of NaOH were studied for their thermal conductivity as a function of temperature, in particular at 25, 35, 60, and 90 °C. The chemical composition of the WHA, determined by ICP, revealed a SiO2 content close to 81%, which is similar to rice husk. The geopolymers were characterized using various techniques to determine their structure, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity. The findings showed that the synthesized geopolymers with 16M and 30M of NaOH had significant mechanical properties and thermal conductivity, respectively, compared to the other synthesized materials. Finally, the thermal conductivity regarding the temperature revealed that Geo 30M presented significant performance, especially at 60 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comparative study was carried out on the chemical, structural and thermal properties of candelilla wax from four wax-producing communities in Mexico, which was obtained by two extraction processes, the conventional one using sulfuric acid (SA) and an eco-friendly alternative process using citric acid (CA) as the extracting agent. The waxes were analyzed by basic chemistry (acidity, saponification, ester indexes, and others), color, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman micro-spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and hardness and brittleness measurements. The waxes obtained by the environmentally friendly process showed differences in their physicochemical properties when compared to waxes from the conventional process. In addition, they showed some improvements, such as lighter shades and harder waxes, suggesting that the new environmentally friendly process is a viable option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perennial systems, such as switchgrass have been shown to improve soil hydraulic properties on degraded soils relative to annual cropping systems; however, studies of the effects on thermal properties are limited. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to determine the effects of topsoil thickness on soil thermal properties under switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and row crop production systems. The experiment was carried out at the University of Missouri South Farm Research Center (38°54′ N, 92°16′ W). Research plots were re-established in 2009 with selected topsoil thickness categorized into two treatments (shallow [4 cm] and deep [36 cm]) on a Mexico silt loam (Vertic Epiaqualfs). Plots were planted to either switchgrass or a corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) rotation with four replicates. Undisturbed soil cores (7.6 by 7.6 cm) and bulk soil were collected from two depths (10 cm increments) to determine thermal properties. Thermal conductivity (λ), volumetric heat capacity (C v), and thermal diffusivity (D) were measured at 0, −33, −100 and − 300 kPa soil water pressures. In addition, soil organic carbon (SOC), bulk density (D b) and water content (θ) were also determined. The results showed that the switchgrass treatment had 23% higher SOC, 5–8% greater θ, and 11% lower D b than the row crop treatment. In turn, switchgrass plot exhibited a 5–7% reduction in λ, an 8–9% reduction in D, and a 2–3% increase in C v. Shallow topsoil thickness demonstrated increased thermal properties (λ, D and C v) relative to the deep topsoil thickness, likely due to higher clay content in the surface soil horizon and associated higher θ. This study contributes to a better understanding of the impact of topsoil loss and perennial vegetation on the thermal properties of soils in degraded landscapes. • Switchgrass reduced soil thermal conductivity but increased heat capacity. • Switchgrass has the potential to buffer heat transport within the soil profile. • Management that influences bulk density also affects soil thermal conductivity. The results of thermal property measurements on cores from the scientific well Yaxcopoil-1 (1511 m in depth) drilled in the Chicxulub impact structure (Mexico) are described. The thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, volumetric heat capacity, thermal anisotropy coefficient, thermal heterogeneity factor, and, in addition, porosity and density were measured on 451 dry and water-saturated cores from the depth interval of 404-1511 m. The acoustic velocities were determined on a subgroup of representative samples. Significant vertical short- and long-scale variations of physical properties related to the grade of shock-thermal metamorphism and correlations between thermal and other physical properties are established. Rocks of the post-impact and impact complexes differ significantly in heterogeneity demonstrating that the impact complex has larger micro- heterogeneity on sample scale. The pre-impact rocks differ essentially from the impact and post-impact rocks in the thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, density and porosity. The thermal anisotropy of rocks of all structural-lithological complexes is very low ( K = 1.02 ... 1.08), which is similar to the situation in the Puchezh-Katunk and Ries impact structures. Correlations are established between the thermal conductivity and elastic wave velocities measured in laboratory. For limestone-calcarenites, the thermal conductivity (λ) can be calculated from the compressional wave velocity ( V) using the formula λ= 0.346 V + 0.844, and for dolomite-anhydrites this relation has the form λ= 0.998 V + 1.163 [for λ in W (m K) and V in km s]. These correlations are used for downscaling of the sonic velocities to the decimetre scale. The effective medium theory is applied to invert the matrix thermal conductivity and pore/crack geometry from the thermal conductivity measured on the studied samples. Representative experimental data on the thermal properties for all lithological groups encountered by the Yaxcopoil-1 well essentially extend an existing database on the thermal properties of rocks of impact structures and can be used for determination of the heat flow density, interpretation of temperature logging data, theoretical modelling of heat and mass transfer processes and constructing thermal models of the Chicxulub impact structure as well as for the lithological interpretation. The research results confirm the necessity of dense sampling for the thermal property measurements to obtain reliable results in petrophysical and geothermal investigations of impact structure formations. The thermal conductivity of soils is a fundamental parameter for the design of ground-source heat pump systems (GSHPs) and energy geostructures. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the physical, mineralogical, and thermal characteristics of typical coastal soils from Tabasco, Mexico. Twenty-five soil samples from four different strata were studied using the thermal needle probe method, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and standard geotechnical soil classification tests. The results showed a significant correlation between the dry density and porosity with the thermal conductivity of the studied samples, which ranged between 1.17 and 2.32 W m−1 K−1. The performed statistical analyses indicated that coarse-grained soils had larger thermal conductivities and higher variability than fine-grained soils. Additionally, the performance of six models to estimate the thermal conductivity of soils was validated against the experimental data. All models provided accurate estimations for fine-grained soils, but only the effective medium theory (EMT) showed an adequate fit for coarse-grained soils. The results represent one of the first datasets for the thermal properties of Mexican soils. They will contribute to the implementation of GSHPs and energy geostructures in the country and locations with similar subsoil conditions, especially where time and resources are not available for their experimental determination.
