Postcolonial Macau is keen to celebrate its colonial legacy to preserve its cultural distinctiveness. This study explores the reordering of a Portuguese colonial site, the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho, into an architectural heritage in the broader postcolonial context. Employing the Foucauldian concept of 'other spaces', specifically 'utopia' and 'heterotopia', the study argues for the heterotopic nature of heritage. It identifies the discourses and material representations of heritage, their construction and their mirroring of mainstream social ideals. Heritage as heterotopia is a conceptual entity that informs and is realised with material objects. The discourse takes heritage spaces as mediums for performances through symbolic loading on material objects to demonstrate the space's otherness. In addition, colonial nostalgia emerges as a dominant narrative in shaping urban identity. The primary proposition of this research is that heritage is made through othering, and the otherness of heritage is presented through performing. Heritage‐making transforms the site from a 'heterotopia of deviation' to a 'heterotopia of performance', which reveals the societal transition from early modernity that advocates for scientific knowledge to postmodernity that embraces neoliberalism, and then to the arriving era of post‐postmodernity based on performatism. This article examines the atmospheric identity of the Chinese city–state of Macau, which has a distinctive urban charisma owing to its 500-year history as a Portuguese colony and its contemporary development into a global tourist site. By analysing visual ethnographic data, the research understands Macau's urban space with attention to its affective atmospheres. The research explores how visual analysis of urban atmospheres may enhance understanding of a city's atmospheric identity. The article analyses the sublime and uncanny as two complementary affective fields exemplified by two unconventional locales: the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge and the adjacent Chinese Special Economic Zone of Hengqin Island. The article demonstrates that visual analysis of affective atmospheres can be instrumental in describing how people, emotions, objects and environments are reconstituted in a continuous process of urban change and development. "The Macanese Diaspora in British Hong Kong: A Century of Transimperial Drifting" by Catherine Chan explores the history of Hong Kong's Macanese diasporic community during the first century of British colonial rule. The book examines the interracial relationships between European, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Malay individuals in Portuguese colonies like Macau, Goa, and Timor, and how these relationships shaped the Macanese community in Hong Kong. Through family records, newspapers, and colonial archives, Chan highlights the transcolonial and global connections of the Macanese diaspora, as well as the local associational cultures that influenced their identity and community-building efforts. The first Macanese diaspora to Hong Kong in the 1840s saw not only the movement of Macau's Luso-Asians to British territory, but also the unfolding of decades of discussion regarding the repressive rule of the Portuguese colonial administration over Macau. From establishing Portuguese-language newspapers to writing to Hong Kong's English-language newspapers, the Macanese found a relatively liberal space in British Hong Kong to address Macau's social and political issues and criticise the Portuguese colonial administration and Portugal away from the Portuguese empire's strict press censorship. Through exploring the ways Macanese newspaper editors and contributors challenged Portuguese policies and maladministration on British soil, this study aims to first, analyse the experience of Hong Kong within the wider context of British press control in its Asian colonies and second, show how trans-border interaction came to be facilitated between Hong Kong and Macau by the movement and activities of a multiracial diasporic community. In 1648, a Portuguese ship that left Macau sank off the coast of the Philippines. The local authorities in Manila confiscated and sold all of its goods. This led to a dispute with the Jesuits, who claimed a certain amount of musk belonging to the Vice Province of China, the sale of which would support their religious mission. This article offers an analysis of this event, focusing on the dispute between the mentioned parties, but also as an example of the complex global networks of goods exchanges and economic interests in these regions of Southeast Asia in the middle of the seventeenth century. This paper analyses the sociocultural background, and the nature of the cultural legacy of the Portuguese, in the diffusion and promotion of football in Macau. The paper seeks to examine why men's football in Macau's remains poorly developed at domestic, regional and international levels. Many factors could explain this lack of development, ranging from the limited degree of organizational specialization inherited from the Portuguese administration, problems regarding implementing rules and tournament organization, the lack of sports facilities, and the tension between the national governing body and the national team athletes. Nevertheless, there has also been some important progress, such as the recruitment of young footballers and the inclusion of local Portuguese talented players. These developments are discussed in a multidisciplinary approach, based on academic literature and harnessing comprehensive documentary analysis derived from official documents and website information of sports associations. This paper focuses on Macao’s indigenous form of public space - chintei - the historic squares that epitomize the former Portuguese colony and remain a unique feature of the city-state under the rubric of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. With Macao currently experiencing the ambivalence of a cultural enclave versus a global gaming hub, the squares are facing an unprecedented phase of transformation where heritage conservation converges or even collides with redevelopment pressures. Discussions are engaged about the government’s stance on preserving and revitalizing the squares, which can be either regarded as residual space or architectural ensemble and project potentiality of urban heritage especially after the inscription of the Historic Centre of Macao on the World Heritage List. Findings from case studies demonstrate that the squares’ revitalization is a process of trial and error that continuously redefines them, and their diminished socio-spatial vitality has yet to be revived. Formal and informal trade were key elements in the establishment of global connections. Using data collected from Portuguese and Spanish archives, as well as the secondary literature, this article examines the early modern Southeast Asian Iberian communities of Macao and Manila, their weakness and resilience. Far from the centres of political decision-making they relied on their own resources and abilities to manage maritime connections with China, Japan and Spanish America through the voyages of the ‘Macao Ship’ and the ‘Manila Galleon’. In December 1966, the city of Macau erupted in mass protests and rioting targeted at buildings and symbols of Portuguese rule—unrest that was countered by military force that left eight residents dead, hundreds wounded, and dozens in jail. In the aftermath of the violence, protests continued, as community leaders used Cultural Revolution rhetoric and tactics to try to force the Portuguese administration to accede to a series of escalating demands that included a written apology for its “crimes.” As the Macau governor tried to convince Lisbon to allow him to compromise, China’s central government and the Guangdong province government got involved, local residents refused to sell food to Portuguese residents, and thousands of Red Guards over the border in Guangdong province seemed poised to invade. This Macau version of Cultural Revolution ended with a historic scene: the Portuguese governor of Macau sitting at a table under an enormous portrait, signing a written apology to all Chinese residents of Macau, agreeing to close all of Kuomintang (KMT) agencies in Macau, and surrendering custody of seven KMT “spies” to mainland China. Through archival materials, newspaper reports and in-depth interviews, this article argues that the Macau 123 Incident was not simply a spillover of Cultural Revolution radicalism, but combined anti-colonial political grievances, anti-KMT political action, and Cultural Revolution-style political rhetoric and tactics. After the transfer of the Portuguese administration to China, Macau kept its role as a bridge between East and West, inspired in the Portuguese settlement 500 years ago. The pragmatism of the Chinese central government, using the Lusophone specificities of this Special Administrative Region, supported the creation of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, reviving the statute of the Portuguese language and culture in its own territory. This paper describes research conducted on Portuguese language allegiance among the extant Macanese community in the Special Administrative Region of Macau (MSAR), formerly a territory under Portuguese administration until its return to Chinese sovereignty in 1999, and the diaspora which resulted from the migration of members of this unique community. A case study explains the use of Portuguese in the MSAR which continues to officially recognize the function of the language for communication in administration, education, and cultural discourse. The study aims to examine the allegiance of the Macanese in perpetuating this function, while drawing attention to the incidence of language switch namely to Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, as the preferred mediums of discourse. This predicament is compared to the Portuguese language allegiance among the diaspora represented by the ‘Casas de Macau' in each country with a Macanese community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the 1802 attempt by Great Britain to shore up its colonial possessions in South Asia by landing troops in the Portuguese colony of Macao during the Napoleonic Wars. Based on documents from the English East India Company, the article discusses British fears of an attempt by France to invade British colonies via Macao, the failed effort to land British troops there, and the strain this placed on relations between Great Britain and China, and trade relations among the European powers.

Studies in railway imperialism usually focus on examples of nations from the European core who imposed railway projects upon their colonies or peripheral countries, seeking political or economic advantages. Both colonies and peripheral countries are often described as passive agents that were either bullied or swindled into accepting those projects. This paper revisits the concept with an example of a colonial country on the European periphery. Portugal attempted to impose a railway from its colony of Macao to the Chinese city Guangzhou in order to obtain political and economic leverage in the South of China. The diplomatic endeavors of the Portuguese representatives in China, conducted with a belittling and even racist demeanor towards the Chinese, were met with different forms of resistance from their Chinese counterparts that eventually led to the termination of negotiations and the project. This new look at railway imperialism shows both that it was not a practice exclusive to imperial powerhouses and that it could be countered by the countries on which it was imposed.
