The article focuses on a type of paper developed by researchers in Sweden and Japan that resists tearing or breaking when pulled. Called cellulose nanopaper, the new material is made of sub-microscopic particles of cellulose that could pave the way for expanded use of paper as a construction material and in other applications. To improve the brittle characteristic of existing materials, researchers decided to expose the wood pulp to certain chemicals to produce the nanopaper.
