The current research is aimed to study the indicators of post reform growth in insurance and its impact on economic development in India. Insurance penetration, insurance density, and gross domestic savings are the dominant measures to study the growth of insurance. Economic development is studied through Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The annual data of 22 years (year 2001 to 2022) from IRDA annual reports and economic surveys have been used. To analyse the data, ARDL technique has been employed. The findings of the study revealed that there is an existence of co-integration (both long-run and short-run) amongst the dependent (GDP) as well as independent variables (indicators of insurance). The findings of the current study have come up with the view that still in insurance, there is an ample scope to tap by creating more awareness and providing more benefits to the policyholders as the intention to purchase the policies may be enhanced. The Economic Survey of India of 2017-18 and OECD data show that the Indian Income Tax Department (ITD) loses more than two-thirds of the income tax appeals litigated before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), the High Courts, and the Supreme Court in India. However, reasons for the ITD's subpar performance, which may adversely impact revenue collection and the ability of the government to fund public services, are unknown. This study applies grounded theory methodology to case law, interview, and survey data to develop a theoretical model to explain the ITD's low success rate in income tax litigation. The study shows that Indian bureaucratic culture, which is characterised by poor accountability, ineffective performance management, and a trust deficit, contributes to the ITD's low success rate in income tax litigation before the ITAT and the courts. Inadequate accountability and ineffective performance management in turn contribute to the poor quality of income tax assessments and the ITD filing meritless or frivolous appeals. Factors that lead to such sub-standard quality of income tax assessments and ITD filed appeals include revenue targets imposed on income tax officials by the ITD, inadequate supervision of tax officials with regard to their assessment of tax, and tax officials disregarding precedent in the process of making assessments and filing appeals. The inferior quality of income tax assessments and ITD filed appeals consequently results in the low success rate of the ITD in tax litigation. In addition, poor accountability and ineffective performance management perpetuate inadequate representation of the ITD before the appellate fora, adding to the ITD's losses in litigation. Further, trust deficit, which underlies Indian bureaucratic culture, fosters a mindset of tax officials that reflects prejudice against taxpayers and a fear of audit and investigation. Trust deficit also leads to officials abdicating their responsibility to make objective decisions in favour of taxpayers. This trust deficit therefore adds to the poor quality of tax assessments and appeals filed by the ITD, further compounding the ITD's losses in income tax litigation. By explaining reasons for the low success rate of the ITD in income tax litigation as well as the poor quality of income tax assessments made and income tax appeals filed by the ITD, the theory of Indian bureaucratic culture provides insights for reforming Indian tax administration. Further, the use of grounded theory methodology to develop a theory based on multiple sources of empirical evidence is a unique contribution to the field of taxation and to the literature on tax administration, especially, the literature on Indian tax administration. In this paper we investigate the trend and pattern of nutritional status of women and children in North East India and explore the factors that perhaps explain the same. The analysis is based on secondary data available from various rounds of NFHS survey, Economic survey of India and other supporting secondary literature portrait the dichotomy between growth and development through the lenses of nutritional parameter. By 2050, India is expected to surpass China as the world's most populated country, with a population of almost 1.7 billion people. To feed this exponentially increasing population, the country must pursue a policy of vertical productivity growth, as the possibilities for additional horizontal expansion of cultivated land are rapidly diminishing. Furthermore, continual cropping depletes soil nutrient resources, necessitating the replenishment of soils with critical major and minor plant nutrients. The country cannot compromise with nutritional supply in order to end "Silent Hunger" and the immoral perpetuation of high concentrations of increasing number of malnourished children and anaemic moms. While the country is intending to restructure its agricultural production system, including R&D, to meet the needs of rising problems, the 2018-19 economic survey established a strong case for the widespread adoption of 'Zero Budget Natural Farming' (ZBNF) to double farmers' revenue. As a result, crop productivity will remain low, and farmers will not be able to earn enough to double their income and get out of debt with this level of output. Also at the country level, we will not be able to meet the expanding populations food and nutritional demands and hence will fail to meet the sustainable goals of "Zero Hunger and Poverty Elimination" by 2030. Odisha, an eastern Indian state, has reported an increasing number of humanelephant conflicts in recent years. Odisha's economic survey (2014-15) reveals that, up until January 2014, about 42,371.86-hectares of forest land had been destroyed for developmental activities. The loss of natural habitat has increased the frequency of conflict. The household survey conducted in nine villages within the Nilagiri forest range, captured various costs of conflict such as crop damage, human fatalities and injury, property damage, and livestock depredation. Findings suggested that crop-raiding was persistent and severe, which threatened food security and livelihoods. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified factors influencing perceptions of the adequacy of compensation. Results show that respondents were less likely to say that compensation amounts were adequate if they had attended more than five years of schooling; if they had an annual family income greater than INR 13,500; and if the amount of compensation was more than INR 12,500. Purpose This paper aims to explore the awareness of terminology related to intellectual capital (IC) among executives of Indian banks and the sources in which they mostly find IC-related terminology. The paper also explores relative and specific contributions of each selected source of information in creating IC awareness among bank executives in India and determines difference among the executives from the public and private sector.Design/methodology/approach This research paper follows a survey-based approach to capture the perceptions of Indian bank managers working middle and top management across different banks. Regression analysis and ANOVA were applied to data from 166 responses.Findings The study finds that IC awareness among Indian banking executives is reasonably high and is equally spread across the three sub-categories of capital (external capital, human capital and internal capital), though the relative awareness of external capital is on the higher side. However, the sources of awareness of IC terminology differ among executives from the public- and private-sector banks.Research limitations/implications The sample was limited to middle and top managers in the Indian banking industry and suffers from the usual limitations of survey-based research such as the design of the survey instrument and the personal biases of the respondents. Some limitations may also have arisen because of the definitions of IC elements adopted by this study.Originality/value This research adds a new dimension to the IC research by exploring the practical application and awareness of IC that deviates from traditional annual report-based disclosure and valuation studies. No existing literature has examined the survey-based awareness study, particularly on the banking industry. Travel & tourism is the fastest-growing industry in the world. Tourism has become a way of earning the revenue for every country in the world. Assam is a unique cultural place in India known for its romantic air in all the seasons. People from the different part of Asia have migrated to Assam and settled due to its scenic beauty, natural heritage, and rich cultures. The tertiary sectors gross state domestic product (GSDP) share has been growing in Assam over the years from 2004-2005 to 2010-2011. Hotels, trade and restaurants, public administration, and storage are the key drivers of tertiary share growth in Assam. Due to the growing demand in tourism and hospitality sector, the present study aims to assess the requirement of skills and talent in the hospitality sector of Assam. The purpose of the research paper is to identify the type of skilling required in the hospitality sector in Assam. Secondly, it aims to analyse the skill gap in the hospitality sector in Assam. Thirdly, it aims to determine the district-wise human resource requirement for the specified sector in Assam. In order to achieve the objectives, secondary data were collected from Census 2011, Central Statistical Organisation, Economic Survey of Assam 2010-11, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), and ICRA Management Consulting Services Limited (IMaCS) analysis in the areas of hospitality sector. The secondary data were collected at district level in Assam with the focus on the hospitality sector of Assam. The study is intended to provide the status of skills' requirement in the specified growth sector. Furthermore, the study will focus on estimating the district-wise human resource requirement in Assam for a period 2011-2021. While solar home systems hold considerable promise for improving access to electricity in developing countries in tropical regions, scholars and practitioners argue that the lack of awareness, interest, and ability to pay for the technology undermines the growth of the market. We describe and explain patterns of awareness and interest in solar home systems (SHS) in a survey of 760 respondents in rural Uttar Pradesh, India. We conducted the surveys in collaboration with a local solar enterprise, Boond, and chose villages that are prime locations for the installation of solar home systems. We found that high household income and education levels, as well as young age, predict awareness of SHS products. In addition to wealthy and educated households, willingness to pay is higher in households that have electricity. The findings can help policymakers identify and target households with low levels of awareness and solar entrepreneurs identify suitable customers for their products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Economic growth is widely perceived as a major policy instrument in reducing childhood undernutrition in India. We assessed the association between changes in state per capita income and the risk of undernutrition among children in India. Methods and Findings: Data for this analysis came from three cross-sectional waves of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted in 1992–93, 1998–99, and 2005–06 in India. The sample sizes in the three waves were 33,816, 30,383, and 28,876 children, respectively. After excluding observations missing on the child anthropometric measures and the independent variables included in the study, the analytic sample size was 28,066, 26,121, and 23,139, respectively, with a pooled sample size of 77,326 children. The proportion of missing data was 12%–20%. The outcomes were underweight, stunting, and wasting, defined as more than two standard deviations below the World Health Organization–determined median scores by age and gender. We also examined severe underweight, severe stunting, and severe wasting. The main exposure of interest was per capita income at the state level at each survey period measured as per capita net state domestic product measured in 2008 prices. We estimated fixed and random effects logistic models that accounted for the clustering of the data. In models that did not account for survey-period effects, there appeared to be an inverse association between state economic growth and risk of undernutrition among children. However, in models accounting for data structure related to repeated cross-sectional design through survey period effects, state economic growth was not associated with the risk of underweight (OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.98, 1.04), stunting (OR 1.02, 95% CI 0.99, 1.05), and wasting (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.96, 1.02). Adjustment for demographic and socioeconomic covariates did not alter these estimates. Similar patterns were observed for severe undernutrition outcomes. Conclusions: We failed to find consistent evidence that economic growth leads to reduction in childhood undernutrition in India. This article analyses whether and how intra-household remittance volumes vary with the length of a migrant's absence, and whether the drivers and dynamics of remittance decay depend on the migrant's destination. We address these questions by using data from the 64th round of the Indian National Sample Survey, conducted between July 2007 and June 2008. We find that the average intra-household remittance function follows a curvilinear trajectory that is best approximated by a quartic (M-shaped) specification. The volatility of intra-household remittances is distinct across migration destinations, with international remittance flows being more volatile than internal intra-state or inter-state flows. Women's ability to accumulate wealth is often attributed to whether they have property rights; i.e., a legal personality to own and manage property. In this paper we argue that basic property rights are insufficient; whether women are able to accumulate wealth also depends upon the marital and inheritance regimes in particular contexts. Drawing upon surveys which collected individual level ownership data in Ecuador, Ghana and the state of Karnataka in India, we estimate married women's share of couple wealth and relate it to how assets are owned within marriage as well as to different inheritance regimes and practices. In Ecuador, married women own 44 %, in Ghana, 19 %, and in Karnataka, 9 % of couple wealth. Ecuador is characterized by the partial community property regime in marriage while inheritance laws provide for all children, irrespective of sex, to be treated equally, norms that are largely followed in practice. In contrast, Ghana and India are characterized by the separation of property regime which does not recognize wives' contribution to the formation of marital property, and by inheritance practices that are strongly male biased. In industrial buyer supplier relationship it is mandatory that buying organization or buyer should ensure selling organization's or seller's satisfaction within the boundaries of the strategic walls. In an integrated supplier relationship management (SRM) cycle supplier satisfaction plays a vital role for the continual and smooth running of the cycle. The changing trend of purchasing and dramatically changing supply chain relationships forcing the buyers to concentrate and ensure the supplier satisfaction. The role of small scale suppliers is substantial in providing the competitive edge to the manufacturing organizations. So it is advisable to keep the satisfaction level of the SSI suppliers high in order to meet the desired operational flexibility. The satisfaction level of small scale suppliers only can be improved if the buying organization understands the problematic areas of the SSI units and formulate their purchasing policy accordingly. Economic Survey reflects the economic performance of the county, 2005-06 ES indicates that economy has achieved a new height of growth. Apart from the services and manufacturing sector, agriculture sector also has shown a good growth. Services sector growth continued to be broad-based among the three sub-sectors of services i.e. trade hotels transport & communication services, continued to lead by growing at double digit rates for the third successive year. A pick-up in investment, reflecting the high business optimism not only strengthened industrial performance but also reinforced the growth outlook itself. Gross domestic capital formation as a proportion of GDP at current market prices reached a high of 30.1 per cent. Maintaining price stability continued to be one of the main objectives of the monetary policy. For achieving this government should provide an enabling environment for higher investment and growth. The article highlights the results of a survey which focused on the detailed terms and conditions of agricultural labor contracts in villages West Bengal, India in 1979. It emphasizes the heterogeneity of employer-employee relationships in the villages. The modes of wage payment, intra-village and inter-village variations in wage rates and modes of wage change are discussed. The article then analyzes the employer-employee relationships of attachment and dependence.

The purpose of this article is to review several strategic assumptions regarding labor productivity and unemployment in the context of economic development theories, and to test these assumptions against some recently available statistical data. The results described throw in doubt some fundamental conclusions derived from models using the concept of surplus labor and disguised unemployment and indicate the need for a more thorough use of available statistics in the analysis of development problems. The focus of the discussion is Indian agriculture that is frequently cited as a classic case of disguised unemployment. The data are largely drawn from the extensive 17-volume of Farm Management Studies of Indian agriculture, which covered on a sample basis, but in considerable depth, the six main agricultural regions of India. It is important to note that the Farm Management data were not based on a small local survey but involved 2,962 holdings covering the major crops grown in India. A large number of specially trained field inspectors observed farm operations in the sample districts and prepared cost-accounting records for the farms on a regular, almost daily, basis for a three-year period.

The article offers information on the contribution of informal firms to the economic development process of India. Topics discussed include data set of surveys of 506 micro and small manufacturing and nonmanufacturing firms in the Delhi area by Takashi Kurosaki; comparison between registered and nonregistered micro and small firms; differences in the effects of demonetization on registered and nonregistered groups of firms.

The 2 nd Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the United Nations attempt to eliminate the potential hunger and food insecurity issues by 2030, but in the plight of COVID19 pandemic it has become far more critical and persistent issue globally as well as in India. The nation-wide socio-economic surveys of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in India are designed to produce reliable and representative estimates of important food insecurity parameters at state and national level for both rural and urban sectors separately but these surveys cannot be used directly to generate reliable district level estimates. Whereas, efficient and representative disaggregated level estimates for the extent (or incidence) of food insecurity prevalence has direct impact on strategizing effective policy plans and monitoring progress towards eliminating food insecurity. In this backdrop, the paper outlines small area estimation approach to estimate the incidence of food insecurity across the districts of rural Uttar Pradesh in India by linking data from the 2011–12 Household Consumer Expenditure Survey of NSSO, and the 2011 Indian Population Census. A spatial map has been generated showing spatial disparity for the incidence of food insecurity in Uttar Pradesh. These disaggregated level estimates are relevant and purposeful for SDG indicator 2.1.2 – severity of food insecurity.
